LALDEF is pleased to announce that Cecilia Jiménez-Weeast is taking the helm at LALDEF as its permanent Executive Director. Lorraine Goodman, previously LALDEF's Interim Executive Director, will stay on as Associate Director in charge of Development and Communications.

Since February 2021, we have partnered with Catholic Charities, Diocese Trenton, Henry J. Austin Health Center, and Trenton Health Team to offer a free “Virtual Exam Room” and deliver COVID-19 vaccines to low-income immigrants. We are well on our way to surpassing our original goal of vaccinating 1,000 low-income immigrant residents in Mercer County over the next six months. As part of the initiative, three of LALDEF’s full-time, bilingual employees—plus two part-time, temporary employees—are being trained to become certified Community Health Workers at New Jersey’s Department of Health’s Colette-Lamothe Galette Community Health Worker (CLG-CHW) Institute. This follows ACEs traumainformed training that LALDEF staff received in Fall 2020, through the Center for Great Expectations.

Research consistently shows that the Latino/a community experiences significant disparities in both healthcare access and outcomes, including higher mortality rates from COVID-19. Many Hispanic immigrants face limited available information in languages they speak, as well as rejection from services due to lack of documentation, language barriers, and discrimination.

Los estudios muestran consistentemente que la comunidad latina padece de disparidades significativas tanto en el acceso a la atención médica como en los resultados, incluidas tasas de mortalidad más altas por el COVID-19. Since the pandemic began, we have distributed over $200,000 worth of pre-paid debit cards, in partnership with the NJ Pandemic Relief Fund, to front line workers ineligible for Federal support. Beginning with the last round that started at the end of March, clients shared their gratitude for this assistance by posting thank you notes on a board at our office. We are honored to share their gratitude below. To those who make this help possible, thank you so much. I do not have the words to express my gratitude, but I am sure of something: that I will use this, your support, to pay several bills.
