Where were you during the earthquake on Friday? And where were you during the solar eclipse on Monday? Were you outside starting at the eclipse (with special glasses, of course), or were you indoors cleaning for Pesach – too preoccupied to really pay any attention to it?

Both the earthquake and eclipse lasted for mere minutes (According to CNN, the totality phase of the eclipse was between three and a half to four minutes), but my what media coverage the events received. And they were major events…

Personally, I know of at least one person who traveled over three hours to see the eclipse in its path of totality. And so many were moved (or rather, rattled) by the earthquake.

The eclipse happened because the moon got in the way of the sun’s light. The earthquake happened because of a crack underneath the earth. These are major events which don’t happen frequently—and certainly not for such a lengthy amount of time. (According to CNN the totality phase of the recent eclipse lasted double the time that the totality phased lasted in 2017.) Meaning, part of what made the event so unique was its time frame, yet overall the time frame was not that long… Back to my acquaintance who traveled for hours to be within the eclipse’s path of totality. To the uninitiated, that means that he wanted to be within the direct path of the moon’s travel so that he could see the moon cover the sun full. In New Jersey the eclipse was only seen as a crescent shaped moon covering the sun, but in Western Pennsylvania and upstate New York (among other places) the moment was experienced as complete darkness, or “totality”.

Hence the journey.

I was amazed when I heard that someone had taken such a lengthy trip just to see such a thing (and apparently the animals react differently during those moments of the eclipse, mistaking daytime for night). But then I’m not exactly the type of person who feels a need to head outdoors for such things. I’m

not either the type of person who’s much in tune with aftershocks. Still, my amazement made me wonder what earthquakes and eclipses mean for the world, and I found out as follows:

Regarding an earthquake the Mishnah teaches that one recites the brachah: “Shekocho Ugvuraso Malei Olam—Whose strength and power fill the world,” for “zeva’os” and the gemara teaches that “zeva’os” mean earthquakes.

About eclipses the gemara states: “When the sun is eclipsed it’s a bad omen for the nations…. When the moon is eclipsed it’s a bad omen for the enemies of the Jewish people,” (Sukkah 29a).

So, were the recent happenings good or bad? Moments to make blessings over, or moments that demand introspection?

The Lubavitcher Rebbe taught that an eclipse should be utilized as a time of teshuvah. Something so major, with a discussion in the gemara as to its omen, necessitates deep inner work.

Two major occurrences, in close succession, is clearly indicative of a need for change. Of changes happening already…

As Jews we have the power to effect greater change at all moments. People were willing to travel for three hours (or more!) to see Hashem’s wonders. How telling that is, of the powers of our soul.

We can effect changes in ourselves, and in those around us, all the time. With Torah, tefillah, and teshuvah, we have the power to uplift ourselves and to rise above the nature of the world. To effect miracles.

We’ve just begun Nissan, the month of miracles. May we be zoche to see the biggest miracle of all—that of the Geulah Shleima.

Ever since I started buying ready made floral arrangments at Evergreen, the pre-Shabbos anxiety about whether my wife will like the flowers I pick has disappeared. I know she will like them.

Lately I have been bringing home fresh hot chicken fingers from the shnitzel bar for my 8 year old. There's a special geshmak about the time we spend noshing and shmoozing at the kitchen table.

Timing is Essential!

Parashas Tazria discusses the laws of one who finds tzaraas on his skin, and the procedure of the Kohen who looks at the affliction to declare it pure or impure. A person does not become tamei from tzaraas until the Kohen pronounces him so.

The passuk in Vayikra 13:14 states, “And on the day healthy flesh appears on it, he shall become impure.” Rashi questions why the Torah specifies, “And on the day” when it could have simply said, “When healthy flesh appears on it.” Rashi answers that “on the day” implies that the affliction is only looked at on certain days. A chosson, for example, is exempt from having his skin examined during sheva brochos and during the Shalosh Regalim all Jews are exempt from this examination. Instead, if tzaraas is indeed suspected, the kohen will examine the person in question after his week of sheva brochos, or after the chag.

If tzaraas is so severe, how can the Kohen wait as long as a week to determine if a person is tamei? The Meshech Chochmah reveals that the double language, “The Kohen shall look at the affliction…. The kohen shall look at him…” (Vayikra 13:3), teaches that a Kohen must look at a nega twice. The first time is to determine if the nega is impure, and the second time is to determine if it’s the right time to declare that psak.

From here, we deduce that there is a time and place for everything. During a time of personal celebration, as with a chosson, or national celebration, as with a chag, the Kohen may not declare a person tamei even if he has a nega with signs that would normally make him tamei.

This lesson from the halachos of negaim applies to our lives these days as well. Sometimes, we see those around us doing something wrong. The person in question might be one’s spouse, children, relatives, or a dear friend. It might also be a stranger. And then we are left with a question: Should we jump in to correct them, or not?

The importance of timing here cannot be underestimated.

Moshe Rabbeinu did not rebuke Bnei Yisroel until the end of his life so as not to rebuke the people repeatedly. He learned this strategy from Yaakov Aveinu who saved his words of rebuke to his sons until shortly before his death. As great as Bnei Yisroel were, timing was crucial for the rebuke to be accepted.

We can give others feedback, but we may not cause them pain. When said at the right time, heartfelt and caring words are usually accepted. When said at the wrong time, they can cause pain that is not easily erased.

Rabbi Yissocher Frand relates the story of a man who wanted to become rav in a certain city. The man sent his son to Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzenski for a letter of recommendation. Rav Chaim Ozer did not feel that the man was qualified for the position, and so, instead of giving him a letter, he told the man’s son that he didn’t want to interfere with the decisions of that community. The son was upset and began

to loudly berate and insult Rav Chaim Ozer. Rav Chaim Ozer calmly walked out of the room without responding. When he returned, his talmidim asked him why he hadn’t put the young man in his place. Rav Chaim Ozer explained that the son had been very concerned about his father’s welfare and would not have been able to accept his words. It was not the right time to rebuke him.

Rav Yaakov Bender tells a story he heard, about his father, when he went to visit a wealthy man on behalf of his yeshiva. “The only reason I agreed to meet you is because of your father,” The wealthy man told Rav Bender. “Years ago, when I was in eighth grade, my rebbi forced me to stand in a corner of the room holding an open gemara. He meted out this same punishment to three other boys, and soon another rebbi came to visit. This rebbi noticed the other three boys but missed me, so my rebbi pointed to me and said, ‘Wait, you missed the fourth boy. He’s standing there.’ This additional humiliation was too much for me to bear. I dropped my gemara, ran out of the room, and ran as far as I could from the school. Suddenly, I found myself in a dangerous neighborhood with a group of gangsters up ahead. Frightened, I called my father up to rescue me, but he was out of the city at the time and called the menahel of the yeshiva, your father, to save me. Your father came to the phone booth where I was hiding and brought me to his car. Kindly, he told me, ‘Don’t feel bad. I would have done the same thing had I been in your place.’ His kind words have never left me, and because of them, I want to support your yeshiva.”

When one leaves this world and is asked for a reckoning on his life, one of the questions he will be asked is, “Did you set times for Torah [learning]?” The Sefas Emes explains this question in a novel way based on chapter three of Koheles that tells us that there is a time and place for everything: “A time to give birth, and a time to die… a time to weep and a time to laugh… a time to love and a time to hate …” Different situations require different behaviors. The Heavenly question can be interpreted as, “Did you live according to the “times” set by the Torah?”

This is an empowering thought during the special days leading up to Pesach, as we work to rid our homes of chametz. Essentially, chametz and matzah are the same. Only a small amount of time changes chametz from an entity that is permitted and a possible mitzvah, to an aveirah punishable by koreis. The same ingredients, but different circumstances determine whether they are appropriate or not.

It’s all about the timing. The difference between a mitzvah and a chiyuv koreis is a matter of minutes. Let’s remember that we have the choice to stop, reexamine, and to decide if now is the right time to offer rebuke or if it’s instead time to offer a good word and to change someone’s life for the better.

Reb Aharon Twersky The Chernobyl Rebbe (1784 – 1871)

The Rebbe of Bohush would always recount the following story after performing sereifas chametz:

Once, Reb Aharon of Chernobyl, the third Rebbe of the Chernobyl dynasty, received a letter from a wealthy member of the Halpern family. This person was concerned because a powerful Russian official had threatened to pass harsh laws against the Jews if they didn’t procure a sum of 200,000 rubles by the month of Tishrei.

Mr. Halpern asked Reb Aharon to see to it that the money was raised. The official was highly regarded by the Czar, Mr. Halpern wrote, and it was well within his power to pass harsh anti-Semitic laws. Not that it would take to much persuasion to convince the Czarto pass laws against the Jews…. Mr. Halpern concluded his letter by writing that he would, of course, donate his personal assets to the campaign.

When Reb Aharon finished reading the letter, he turned

to his gabbai and said, “Why is he bothering me with nonsense?”

The gabbai was surprised. Klal

Yisrael was in danger, and Reb Aharon seemed to be brushing the matter off. Reb Aharon, however, didn’t let the gabbai’s confusion bother him.

When Mr. Halpern saw that Reb Aharon hadn’t responded to his letter, he dispatched a special envoy to speak to him in person and to explain the severity of the situation.

But Reb Aharon responded to the envoy dismissively, clearly taking the matter lightly. “What should I tell the person who sent me?” the messenger asked. “Please, Rebbe, be so kind as to put your lack of concern into writing.”

Reb Aharon instructed his gabbai to write a letter to Mr. Halpern telling him to ignore the official’s threats, but the gabbai felt unable to do so. “Klal Yisrael is in danger!” he protested. “How can I write such a thing?”

Hearing this, Reb Aharon told the envoy, “There’s no need for a written response. Tell Mr. Halpern not to pay attention to the matter.”

Some time later, Reb Aharon received another letter. This time it was from his brother, Reb Yitzchak of Skver, who insisted that the Jews of Russia faced a serious threat and that action needed to be taken.

Reb Aharon disregarded this letter as well.

Reb Tzvi Kinstelicher

(1871 – February 9, 1965)

Reb Tzvi Kinstelicher was a Hungarian rav and posek in Transylvania (a region in central and northwestern Romania) before World War II. He was also the av beis din of Hermannstadt (modern day Sibiu). He made aliyah to Eretz Yisroel at the end of 1948, or the beginning of 1949 and moved to Yerushalayim, where he was very close with Reb Yisrael Moshe Dushinsky.

The following incident occurred when Reb Tzvi was still a rav in Romania. One year, in the beginning of the month of Nissan, Reb Tzvi experienced terrible stomach pain. He traveled to the city of Klausenburg to seek treatment from the doctors there, and he was unfortunately informed that he was suffering from a serious illness and required emergency surgery.

Reb Tzvi understood the need for surgery, but he could not bear the thought of spending Pesach in a hospital to recover. He told the doctors that the surgery would have to wait until after Pesach. The doctors weren’t happy, but Reb Tzvi stood firm. Seeing his insistence, the doctors agreed to postpone the surgery but gave Reb Tzvi strict orders to eat nothing except for milk, eggs, and orange juice. He was certainly not to eat bread and definitely not matzah.

Reb Tzvi put his faith in Hashem and hoped for the best. He returned home where the tasks of cleaning, shopping, cooking, planning, and preparing were all underway. Finally, leil Haseder arrived. Reb Tzvi was still suffering from excruciating abdominal pain, but he conducted his Seder as usual, with enthusiasm and simchah.

When it came time to eat the matzah, Reb Tzvi was in a quandary. On the one hand, the doctors had clearly told him not to eat wheat products. On the other hand, eating matzah at the seder is a mitzvah d’oraysah.

How could he have a Pesach without matzah? Reb Tzvi decided that just for the seder he’d disobey the doctors’ orders and eat a kezayis of matzah soaked in milk.

The next night, he did the same thing.

Reb Tzvi waited to see what would happen. Many healthy people don’t stomach

matzah well, and for someone suffering from a serious gastrointestinal disease the stakes were that much higher. But Reb Tzvi had the opposite reaction. Everyone present at his seder remembered how Reb Tzvi described feeling how the matzos removed all his suffering.

Reb Tzvi later recounted, “Through Hashem’s kindness after the second Seder my agonizing pain disappeared completely, as if it had never been, and I didn’t feel any discomfort at all.”

Pesach passed, and it was nearly time for Reb Tzvi to undergo the surgery that he had insisted on pushing off.

On the Shabbos after Pesach, Reb Tzvi

went up to the bimah and shared his medical situation with his congregation. He told the people that he’d been diagnosed with a serious illness, and that he had to undergo a dangerous operation. He begged them to daven for him and offered them tearful words of parting. He feared that it might be the last time that he’d see them.

A few days later, Reb Tzvi returned to the doctor in Klausenburg. The doctor ran tests on him, subjecting him to a pre-op examination. To the doctor’s amazement, the disease had completely vanished!

The doctor was sure that Reb Tzvi had been treated by a different expert, who had cured him. Amazed, he asked Reb Tzvi which doctor he’d gone to who had healed him to the point that there was not a trace of illness left in his body.

Reb Tzvi replied, “I didn’t go to a doctor. On Pesach, however, at the seder, I ate a piece of matzah. The matzah is called the “bread of Emunah,” and it is surely in it’s merit that I have experienced a complete recovery.”

“You experienced a miracle,” the doctor responded. “Medical knowledge is nothing next to G-d’s will.”

Reb Tzvi recorded the events in a letter that he wrote to his friend and mechutan Reb Yisrael Valtz. [The letter was printed in full in Be’er Tzvi (in the “Letters” section, letter 32).]

Reb Tzvi concluded his letter with a request that Reb Yisrael Valtz relay the account to Reb Tzvi’s son, so that he would know the neis that Hashem had done for his father.

Chapter 30

Debbie and I looked at each other. Then, almost in sync, we looked at our watches.

“It’s late,” I said. Talk about stating the obvious. But for once Debbie nodded at me as if I’d said something of profound wisdom. I think the expression “plumb tuckered out” is about the right one to describe us at that moment. We had no more energy for anything. Even Avi.

Just as I was about to put my key in the lock, the front door was flung open and there stood Rikki in pjs, robe and slippers, totally ready for bed, but not looking the least bit tired.

“So,” she said, “did you find him? Did they rescue him? Tell me everything!!”

“He’s safe,” Debbie said, “and he’s fine. That’s all you need to know for now. Can we talk again in the morning, please?”

“No!!! I need to know what happened!! Where is he? If he’s safe and fine, why isn’t he here with you? Why couldn’t you phone me on the way home and fill me in? I’ve been going crazy here waiting to hear!! Tell me now!!!”

“Rikki, sweetie,” Debbie said, and her voice sounded as if her mouth was filled with cotton. “The police were in the car. There was no way we could phone and talk to you privately. I’m sorry. It’s all been very, very stressful.”

Rikki looked at me to see if I was going to make any more sense than her mother. A highly unlikely event even at the best of times. I think she finally saw how plumb tuckered out we were, because she backed off.

“Err. First thing in the morning,” she added lamely.

Debbie and Rikki went up to bed. For all I knew, Debbie could have told Rikki stuff while they were up there together, but I neither knew nor cared. I didn’t hear them talking, but that didn’t mean much. As for me, I couldn’t even make it up the stairs. I collapsed onto the living room couch and was out like a light, fully dressed. I just about managed to say Shema before I passed out.

When I awoke in the morning, before I’d even opened my eyes properly, I noticed that I had a stiff neck, stiff shoulders, and my arms hurt. Do you know that people actually choose to sleep on other people’s couches? Sofa surfing, I think they call it. Not my idea of fun.

“Well?” Rikki said.

I sat up, bleary eyed and aching all over. I looked at my watch. It had just turned 7 a.m.

“Ask your mother,” I managed.

“She’s locked her bedroom door,” Rikki said. Clever woman, I thought, I wish I’d thought to lock the living room door. Not that the living room had a lock.

“I’m listening, Dad,” she added.

I told her what had happened.

All of it. Uncensored. I thought she deserved to know, as she was probably the strongest member of our household just then.

Needless to say, she was not impressed.

“What???” she yelled.

“Shh, I said, “your mother is still sleeping.”

“Read my lips, Dad,” she said. “I. Don’t. Care.”

I drew deeply on whatever sense of indignation I felt at her words and flung it back at her. “Well, you should care! It’s your mother, and she’s asleep! Keep your voice down!”

I totally missed the irony of my own shouting, but Rikki didn’t miss a trick, and she burst into giggles. “Oh, Dad,” she said finally, when she’d sobered up enough. “How could you and Mum just meekly agree to be taken home by those two clowns? Why didn’t you refuse, and march in there yourselves?”

I opened my mouth to say that Pete and Fred weren’t clowns, that they were respectable members of the Metropolitan police, but I suddenly found myself agreeing with her. Why had we just knuckled down and done what we were told? I shut my mouth again and tried looking a little shamefaced, which wasn’t that

“Dad, we’re going back there,” Rikki pronounced.

“Okay,” I said placatingly.

“Now, Dad. This very minute.”

“Well just a minute!” I said, in keeping with the “plumb tuckered out” theme. “Firstly, your mother’s still asleep…”

“Easily remedied,” Rikki said. “In fact,” she looked ceilingward, “I can hear her moving around, which means she’s up. Next?”

“Next, I haven’t davened,” I said. Always a killer explanation.

“Well, daven then,” Rikki said reasonably.

“So should you,” I said, “especially today.”

“Dad I’m in Gateshead seminary,” Rikki said. “Davening is like breathing.”

But she sat down and davened anyway, while I put my tallis and tefillin on. I could have gone to shul, but with that steely look in my daughter’s eyes, I didn’t think I should risk it. Anyway, to be honest, I was too edgy and stressed, and people in the minyan would ask me what was wrong, and I wouldn’t know what to say in reply. It felt safer to stay home.

Debbie came down soon after, saw what was going on in the living room, and joined in. We davened shacharis and prayed for Avraham Eliyahu ben Devorah Masha Tovah.

Once we’d finished davening, Rikki decided that instead of sitting down to breakfast, which would waste precious Avirescue time, she’d throw together a thermos of coffee and some Danishes. All went into a cloth bag that she slung over her shoulder.

“Right. We’re ready to roll,” Rikki announced. “Elephant and Castle Station, here we come!”

To Jews who live in London, Elephant and Castle might as well be the dark side of the Moon. In fact, I had never been there other than the previous night. So now I had to drive into alien territory in South London, and I used Waze.

Well, didn’t everyone?

Sometimes, when I thought about it deeply, I found it strange that in such a powerfully feminist household as ours, my womenfolk still “permitted” me to remain the Alpha male when it came to driving. I was a good driver, I knew that, but being good at things didn’t automatically qualify you for a place at the helm. Maybe they were just humoring me by allowing me this last little bit of male pride I had left. So, it was with a great sense of pride and machismo that I drove the car, with my wife and daughter in the back, not even lecturing me on my driving. They talked quietly together about their son/brother, which meant they trusted me. Not always a given.

Waze took us smoothly to our destination. Parking, as always, was a problem. As we no longer had the “proteksia” of having a police car, we had to park legitimately, which is not my favorite occupation. Still, I thought I’d better not ruin my Alpha Male street creds by having to meekly accept a ticket. I found a small NCP (National Car Park) parking lot not far away and paid up the exorbitant fee for it like a lamb. Or like a subservient Alpha Male. Then, we all piled out, and walked the shortish distance to the station, and thence to the building opposite.

“Okay,” I said with authority. “Let’s do this.”

We had never been inside the building, remember, so even though Rikki looked to us to lead her to the right apartment, we didn’t actually know which one it was going to be. This was slightly worrying for my macho status, and I hoped I could pull off a successful coup by pure luck rather than judgment.

Indeed, luck was on my side. The first-floor apartments looked very closed up, but we heard sounds and voices coming from the second floor, so I ran nimbly up the stairs to meet Avi on the way down. He had a medium-sized suitcase and a rucksack with him.

Avi?!

We both stopped dead in our tracks.

Avi looked very disconcerted to see me, his mother, and his sister.

“What are you doing here?” he asked. “I thought I told you, or that copper anyway, to leave me alone.”

“Hey Avi,” Rikki said.

“Hey, sis,” Avi said.

That seemed to be the full extent of their conversational skills at the moment. Which was a relief, if truth be told, as I couldn’t have improved on it myself.

“We are surely owed some kind of explanation,” Debbie said, coming up a few stairs so she stood level with me, facing her son. “You’re looking well, though, I must say.”

“That’s because I am well, Mum,” Avi said.

“So where are you off to?” I asked casually, as if inquiring after the destination of a chol ha’moed outing. No-one had touched anyone else by this stage; it was all a rather stilted exchange.

“To find a new safe house, Dad, since you discovered this one.”

“Safe house?” Rikki asked. “We thought you’d been kidnapped!’

“Well, you were wrong sis.” Avi tried to maneuver past me down the stairs, but I did my Monolith impression, blocking his way.

“I don’t get it,” I said. “You sent us that video. We saw the CCTV at the bowling alley. It looked like...”

“It looked like me?” came a second voice, and someone descended the stairs until he came into our field of vision.

Xavier Roberts.

“Yeah, a bit,” I admitted uncomfortably. Up close, and a couple of steps above me, he certainly looked like a big guy. And he was wearing a beanie.

“That’s because it was me,” Xavier Roberts said. “Now if you can just move a bit so Avi and I can get past, that would be very helpful.”

The unbelievable thing about what happened next was that we all moved out of their way. All three of us.

Debbie and I more docilely. Rikki looking like she was in a state of shock.

As for Avi and Xavier Roberts, they continued on their way, down the stairs.

What exactly is the UEZ and how can it help YOUR business?

e UEZ, or Urban Enterprise Zone, is an area that has been designated by the state as an economic development (business) zone. e goal of the UEZ is to promote employment opportunities growth by helping businesses ourish. To accomplish this, the UEZ allocates grants and loans, authorizes tax-free purchases, and provides other resources to member businesses.

If you own a business, you may be wondering, “great, how do I join this program?” But here’s the problem many businesses have run into: in order to be a UEZ member, your business has to be located in a UEZ zone. Until now, UEZ zones were limited to commercial areas, e ectively leaving out many businesses adjacent to a commercial area. In addition, there used to be a contiguity clause, meaning all areas of the UEZ had to be connected to one another. at meant that if there was an isolated business with no other businesses right nearby, it was disquali ed from being included in the UEZ.

As a result of policy changes at the State, the rules have been updated to better represent the current. business landscape. As a result, and with the adoption of a new Lakewood UEZ 5 Year Plan, the Lakewood UEZ Zone map is being redrawn to better re ect the realities on the ground. ese changes will be locked in for 5 years.

is presents an opportunity for new businesses to apply and the possibility to allow businesses who have been turned away in the past, to be included in the new map. A cluster of businesses in one location may be enough for the area to be considered for inclusion in the UEZ. County Line Road now has 11 businesses? Great, now that area of County Line may be considered for inclusion in the UEZ map.

Shira, an accountant, would be able to purchase her $2,000 Proseries So ware without shelling out a dime. Wig salons, paint supply stores, spelt sourdough bakers, credit card points sellers, graphic artists, clothing stores, storage warehouses, you name it. Thank you so much for starting this column—I think it’s a really nice idea and wanted to post my own thought of appreciation here:

When my husband needed surgery, I spent a long day in the hospital waiting room. What a surprise I had when my nextdoor neighbor, a mother of a large family, called to tell me she was waiting downstairs in the lobby and had a package for me. We live about half an hour away from the hospital, and my neighbor made the drive all the way over just to bring me a bag of lunch, magazines and my favorite treats! What a lesson that was for me about how to treat others in similar situations! It was such a heartwarming, generous and thoughtful gesture and those gifts definitely made the wait much more pleasant. I am honored to have such a special neighbor and friend!

Dear Editor,

For years I’ve had a story of thanks lurking around in my mind, which I really feel bad (and also good, not to worry) about. You’ll soon see why. The story is that years ago I flew overseas with my, at the time, eight-month-old baby. Do not ask me why, but I decided that instead of schlepping around the airport with a stroller I’d be better off handing in at the baggage check-in while holding my baby in a baby carrier. I might have done this so that my baby would be able to sleep in me, and on me, on the plane.

Bad idea. I borrowed a carrier from a friend — the kind that’s

a sling — and within minutes of me passing through baggage check in, the whole fancy wraparound fell apart. For the life of me, I could not figure out how to rewrap myself in the thing which meant that I now had both my baby and the sling carrier to carry.

I was flying alone, and I had a stopover. And somewhere along the course of my journey (just walking from one end of the airport to the other felt like a journey, what with my baby, baby carrier, and hand luggage), I noticed a distinguished looking couple walking up ahead. The woman saw me and offered to help me with my baby. I, deeply embarrassed by my mistake in not bringing along a stroller, did not ask the woman her name, but I nonetheless accepted her help. Throughout our flight and the accompanying stopover, in the airport, the woman offered to help me out.

I was grateful and kept the woman’s image in my mind for years. And then, one day, I was at a lecture, and this woman was the lecturer. I was not surprised because she’d had that distinguished look about her years earlier.

But, as I wrote at the beginning of this letter, I feel badly because I did not thank this woman. I should have, but I was cowardly and I lost that opportunity — but I’m grateful for this opportunity to write in my story of thanks instead.

Maybe I’ll still gather up my courage and thank her. In the meantime, this is a shoutout for all those seemingly “small” acts of kindness which in fact go a long way and leave an everlasting impression upon the world. Thanks for a great weekly!

HI, my name is Mindy Ganzfried and I'm in fifth grade. I's like to share with you an incredible story. When I was in second grade I finished Tehillim and my family was in Toys 2 Discover so my mother let me buy something because of it. I decided to buy and interesting arts and crafts. It was putty that you make into a shape, you bake it and it becomes an eraser. It was a little expensive but my mother said that we'll buy it anyway because she saw how much I wanted it. When we came home, my mother looked at the receipt and she saw that it was on sale. We were thanking Hashem for what he did for us. I still have it and every time I play with it I remember what Hashem did for Us and the whole story that happened. How wonderful are the ways of Hashem!

Hashem planned that I should put my Chumash notes in my bag. That was the only thing I ended up needing from my loose-leaf and B"H I had exactly that!

My mother was once traveling somewhere with friends. When she got to the airport she noticed her suitcase was missing from the trunk. She remembered that as they were leaving to the airport, her friend drove through the parking lot near her house with the trunk open before it automatically closed and it probably fell out without anyone noticing. My mother was at a loss what to do. She called my father who mentioned that his chavrusah was traveling to the same place for a conference and he would find out where he was staying and see if he could possibly take my mother's suitcase. First my father went to the street where the suitcase was left and BH it was still there! My mother was shocked when my father called to tell her that his chavrusah was staying in the hotel right next door and was happy to take the suitcase. He left on a flight just a few hours after my mother!

BRING IT HOME DID YOU KNOW?

The impact of our words is extremely powerful. It’s important to make sure we only speak positively about each other.

As you wake up on the day of an important school test, you notice a familiar sensation in your stomach, a fluttering feeling called butterflies. This feeling comes up whenever you feel nervous, especially when anticipating an important event. But nervousness is not the only feeling that causes you to experience a physical feeling. Think of the warmth that washes over you when your Bubby or Zaidy offers you a compliment. In such moments, you experience a pleasant sensation, a comforting warmth that comes from within. These physical responses are our body’s way of feeling and expressing the emotions we have. They are signals from Hashem, to help us understand the complex feelings we have, allowing us to go through life with a deeper understanding of ourselves and those around us.

DELVING DEEPER

How can we develop habits that encourage us to speak with kindness?

In this week’s Parsha, we learn about Tzaraas, which is a physical type of sickness. Rather than being caused by germs or cold weather, it came as a consequence of speaking Lashon Hara/speaking negatively about someone. Tzaraas would appear on a person’s skin as a white or pink patch. If these signs appeared, the person had to go to a Kohen to determine if it was indeed Tzaraas. If it was confirmed, the affected person would spend a certain amount of time alone outside the city, until the condition went away. While this consequence may seem very long and difficult compared to a simple apology between friends, the Torah comes to teach an important lesson. It emphasizes the importance of making sure to speak with kindness and the need to think carefully before speaking.

Cabbage Color Chemistry

Cut up cabbage in chunks until you have about 2 cups worth and put it into the medium bowl.

Drain the water into another bowl and divide it into 3 bowls for each of the colors.

In the last bowl, pour 1 Tbsp of vinegar and watch it turn pink!

Boil 4 cups of water and pour directly over the cabbage.

In the first bowl, just leave the cabbage water to remain purple.

Our kind words have an impact just like the anthocyanin in cabbage, which causes the color change based on the acidity or base of the solution.

Cover with aluminum foil and let the water seep in for 10 minutes.

In the second bowl, add 2 tsp of baking soda and watch it turn blue!

Pesach is on its way and, as we all know, that means it’s the time of year when we find all the things that we were sure we lost on the bus, outside somewhere, or at a friend’s house (but which friend??) when really, all this time they were in the recesses of some knapsack that we’re, ahem only now cleaning for the first time this year.

GLASS WASHING SPONGE SHOES

This idea is an invention that never caught on, and one has to wonder why. Glass-washing sponge shoes are slippers that have sponges attached to their bottoms instead of a sole. The idea, when it was first invented, was for people to clean their tiled or linoleum floors by simply walking, or skating, around on them. The shoes had a lot of well-meaning goals which didn’t exactly work out. They were supposed to add fun to a boring job, be a great source of exercise, and guarantee a cleaner house — by being something you could do while simply walking around.

Why didn’t the idea take off? Maybe, because even though glasswashing sponge shoes sounds like a fun idea, they’re not especially good at thorough cleaning. Moving around in them may clean light spills or dust, but for tougher stains or for cleaning larger areas, a good ol’ mop is much more practical. Plus, not everybody is into the idea of wearing their cleaning tool. What if the floor is very slippery? You could go flying and land flat on your back. Doesn’t sound like so much fun anymore, does it?

FEBREZE

Have you ever wished you could just spray something and make bad smells disappear? That’s exactly what Febreze does. Scientists at Procter & Gamble found a special ingredient in the 1990s that could capture and get rid of smells, not just hide them. One of the scientists got really pumped when it removed the fishy smell from his sweater. Febreze can be used to freshen up everything from smelly socks to the family car after a ten-hour road trip to Bubi and Zayde for Pesach.

DYSON VACUUM CLEANERS

Imagine trying to invent something, failing at it more than 5,000 times, but not giving up. That’s one stubborn dude, eh? Meet James Dyson of Norfolk, England who was unhappy with his vacuum because it kept losing suction. Over and over and over (5,127 times, to be exact) he tried different ways to improve the vacuum, until he came up with his famous Dyson vacuum cleaner in 1993. The innovation doesn’t use a bag and never loses its power to suck up dust. People were so shocked by how well it worked; they couldn’t believe it at first! However, it soon became quite popular and remains so even today.

HAIR CATCHING CHAIN (DRAIN WIG)

A Drain Wig might sound a bit yucky, but it can be a super helpful tool. It’s hair catcher chain you drop into your shower drain, that catches any hair there before it clogs up the pipes. When it’s full, you just pull it out (that’s the gross part) and throw it away.

The Drain Wig chain was invented by Jennifer Briggs, a mom who was tired of dealing with clogged drains because of hair. It was officially introduced into the market in 2013.

Jennifer got the idea for this chain after always having to clean out the shower drain from her daughters’ hair. She turned her frustration into an amazing invention that’s now saving drains (and mothers’ frustration) all over the world!

ROBOTIC DUST BALLS

Imagine a small, round robot covered in soft, microfiber material, kind of like a big, fluffy cotton ball. When you turn it on, it starts moving all by itself, scooting and rolling all over the floor in different directions to pick up dust and tiny pieces of dirt. The device was designed to be a cute and fun way to help clean the floors without needing to push a vacuum or use a broom, and it was invented around 2010.

If you’ve never heard of the robotic dust ball before that’s okay. Neither did I before I sat down to write this article, and neither have most people.

Why?

Well, while the idea sounded cool, like having little cleaning pets (and who wouldn’t want that?!) in reality the dust balls weren’t very useful. They often missed spots, got stuck in corners, or just pushed the dust around instead of picking it up. Also, they needed lots of cleaning themselves, which kind of defeated the purpose.

Oh well, onto bigger and better things.

ROAMING ROBO-VACUUMS

There must be a reason people keep trying to improve on the vacuum. Is it because it’s one of the least loved household chores? Well, next to scrubbing the bathtub, maybe it is.

Jump to 2017, and we’ve got little robot vacuums called Sharks scurrying around the house picking up dirt. They’re seriously a fantastic invention — especially for the really lazy, or really busy. Just plunk the vacuum on the floor that needs to be vacuumed or swept and in a few hours your floor will be done.

You read correctly, I wrote ‘hours’.

Yup, the timing factor is the only downside. These robo vacuums aren’t the brightest so sometimes they’ll repeat the same spot over and over or get stuck and take a while to get out of their stuckness. So, if Shabbos is in a half hour, it’s way too late to vacuum with this little guy. But for Pesach, you should have a few weeks…

The latest Shark also has a mop feature, but I’m not sure how helpful it is. Unless you have a very small area that needs to be mopped. And, bear in mind, you have to continually refill it with water and move it from spot to spot.

The Roomba is similar to the Shark and was invented by a team at iRobot in the USA even earlier in 2002. The idea was born when one of the creators saw his wife vacuuming and thought, “We can make a robot do that!” Some people like their Roomba so much, they give it a name and treat it like a pet!

FLOWBEE VACUUM HAIRCUTTING SYSTEM

Some inventions have truly revolutionized our cleaning experiences. Some have not. For example, the Flowbee Vacuum Haircutting System was created in 1988 as a tool that could cut hair while also sucking up the trimmings (the hair that was cut).

Think of a vacuum haircut system where someone holds a Flowbee attachment and moves it around their head to cut their hair. A vacuum cleaner is also connected to this device and it sucks the trimmed hair up.

The setup was designed to make home haircuts easy and mess-free, since the vacuum collects the cut hair right away, preventing it from falling on the floor or clothes. Unfortunately however for its producers, the Flowbee never really made it. People found it hard to use and were nervous about trusting a vacuum attachment with their haircuts!

MAGIC GERM-ZAPPING WANDS (UV SANITIZING WANDS)

Imagine having a magical flashlight that doesn’t just light up the dark but also fights germs, like bacteria, and viruses. Well, imagine no longer, such a thing actually exists!

The UV sanitizing wand, which became popular in the early 2000s, is like a stick with a special light on it that can kill germs on things you touch. The special light on the wand is UV, short for ultraviolet, and it comes from the sun. Ultraviolet light is really good at stopping germs from growing, so waving a stick of the stuff is almost like waving a magic wand to keep your stuff all germ free. Imagine your phone, toys, or door handles — all made safer without your even touching them.

Since this light is so strong, you have to be careful not to shine it in your eyes or on your skin, just like you wouldn’t look directly at the sun or touch something really hot.

Fun fact: UV light is also used to purify water and air in hospitals and laboratories.

SCRUB DADDY SPONGE

The Scrub Daddy is a super cool sponge that looks like a yellow smiley face and was invented by a guy named Aaron Krause. While trying to clean his workshop one day, Aaron came up with Scrub Daddy — a scrub that changes its texture depending on the water temperature that it’s in contact with.

Mr. Krause first showed his sponge on “Shark Tank”, a show where inventors display their creations, in 2012. This was followed by a $200,000 deal and the sale of 42,000 sponges in under seven minutes!

What’s so special about Scrub Daddy is that it hardens in cold water for tough spots, and softens in warm water for lighter cleaning.

These days, it’s one of the most popular cleaning tools ever. Especially because it smiles back at you while you scrub. Pretty cool, eh?

MAGIC ERASER

Ever drawn on the wall and gotten into trouble for it?

Okay, you don’t have to answer thatI If you did, then it was surely years ago when you were a little kid. For those other kids who write on walls or just smudge their dirty fingerprints all over the place, Magic Eraser could be their hero. This eraser is a special sponge, made by Mr. Clean, that can erase marks from almost any surface, just with water. Originally, the material used in the Magic Eraser was meant to insulate buildings and keep t hem warm and quiet, but someone figured out that it could also do a great cleaning job.

Magic Eraser is like a magic wand for stains, making mothers everywhere very excited because it can wipe away your little brother’s “art” from the wall in seconds.

MINI DESK VACUUM

Ever got crumbs in your keyboard while snacking and studying? The mini desk vacuum invented in the 2010s was supposed to be the solution — charged by your computer’s USB port.

Too bad it didn’t work. It took forever to suck up even the tiniest crumbs, and was more like using a feather to push dirt around than a real vacuum.

So, there you have it - the world of creative, wild, yet, for the most part, surprisingly useful cleaning tools that show just how fun cleaning can be. Whether it’s a sponge that smiles back at you, or a vacuum that does the work while you sleep, these inventions prove that with a little bit of creativity, even the most boring chores can be turned into an adventure— or at least, give you a break.

So the next time you’re faced with a mess, remember there might just be a cool gadget out there that will make your cleaning experience a lot more adventurous.

The arctic fox inhabits the entire frozen Arctic region surrounding the North Pole. They are related to the species of wolves, coyotes, jackals, dogs and have very similar characteristics.

Hashem clothed them with a thick, warm coat and a wide, furry tail to keep them warm in this frigid climate, which is of the coldest on the planet. Their body is so well protected that they won’t start shivering until the temperature falls to 70 below 0!

Like many other animals that camouflage themselves and blend into their surroundings inconspicuously, so, too, the arctic fox. Winter - when everything is covered in snow, their coat is white; summer - grey or brown.

They don’t hibernate in the winter and are active throughout the year. In preparation for the winter season they will consume huge amounts of food, layering fat on their body, and thus survive the bitter cold. They can amass 50% of their weight!

In the summer the mother will build a nest in a cave underground or under a tree (picture left), which will have multiple entrances. Usually between 5-8 babies are born at a time, however, rarely, it can be 25!

The father assists in raising the children and will bring mice, or other prey, to eat. Sometimes, a ‘cousin’ will also help out. The babies will venture outside for the first time at 3-4 weeks old and by 9 weeks the mother will stop feeding them. At a few months old they are completely independent.

The arctic fox has a very strong sense of hearing. He can hear the slightest vibrations occurring deep under the snow, and so can perceive even a small mouse running about and catch it.

Usually they eat whichever small animal they can capture. A partial list: baby seals, mice, rabbits, birds, eggs, fish and dead animals.

Many times they will feast on the leftovers of wolves or polar bears. They will stalk and follow the bear for miles (picture top left), wait until it captures a seal and eats the skin and fat, and then consume the leftovers.

In certain areas their main food is birds and their eggs (see picture top right). Some seasons, when the Ring Seals are born and hidden by their mothers in underground caves, the fox will pick up the scent, dig up the cave (picture left), attack the helpless seal, and capture it.

When there is plentiful food they will burrow chunks of meat or eggs deep in the snow. They will recall the precise location and deep in the winter, when food supply is scarce, they will dig it up to eat.

It happens every year.

You spend a week packing up your entire home — spouse and kids included —and then you head on over to your parents, in-laws, or an uber-gracious sibling. You expect said hostess to greet you with smiles, child-friendly entertainment, and a piping hot kugel — while you schlep your luggage into your new, albeit temporary, dwelling.

As your kids scour the house for snacks and toys, you rush to hang up the suits, dresses, and adorable matching kid’s Pesach-wear you recently splurged on, because all you need is your mother-in-law spotting creases on them.

Over Yom Tov, you try your best to be helpful and to keep your rowdy kids under control, at least while your hostess is hovering nearby. You make a show of preparing a few dishes before the meals, clearing away a few dirty ones afterwards, and you run to tuck someone in before you get stuck with a broom.

And then before you know it, the whirlwind of matzah crumbs, wine stains, and charoses-overdoses, come to a crashing halt in the form of the pizza that you expect to be served on Motsei Pesach after you’ve finished getting your little ones into pajamas. But, lo and behold, instead of emerging from your oasis to find your hostess closing the last Pesach cabinet and retrieving her familiar chametzdig tablecloth,

you find her sprawled on the couch, nursing a cup of chamomile tea in one hand and a phone in the other.

“It’s the cleaning lady,” she hisses whispers, covering the mouthpiece as though the lady on the other end of the line might develop a sudden understanding of English. “So, uh, when did you say you were leav- er, have to be home by?”

And you can’t help but note the wistfulness in her eyes, perhaps from having to bid her beloved guests goodbye, but more likely, in anticipation of the peaceful moments that will undoubtedly descend after she finally closes the door behind them.

Well, you think, huffingly. After all that bonding. She wants us out already?

So, my friends, having been at both ends of the noose rope, I hereby present you with the following list of Do’s and Don’t for your Pesach Guests.

Guests, take heed, so your hosts will appreciate your presence even more than you think they already do.

Hosts, you can thank me later!

Now, sit back, relax and learn a thing or two to keep those invitations coming!

Do: Ask your hostess when she wants you to arrive. Some hostesses prefer that you come earlier to avoid the pre-Yom-Tov frenzy, while others prefer to use the quiet time to get things done before you arrive. Try, as much as possible, to keep to her preference so that she doesn’t have to start the holiday any earlier, or later, than necessary!

Don’t: Come a week early, holding your colicky baby out to your hostess offering her a share of your wealth. If you must come early, be prepared to help cook, clean or take your family on eighteen-hour-long day-trips. Including the baby.

Do: Ask your hostess what you can bring that would be helpful. That offer’s aside from your adorable kinderlach, whom you’re obviously bringing anyway. Offer to run to the grocery for some last-minute shopping (with your credit card, not hers), or perhaps to the liquor store. At the very least, bring a treat you know she likes, like chocolates, flowers or, at least a magazine.

Don’t: Come empty handed with nothing but for the bags of cheerios you’re little ones insisted on schlepping along. Under no circumstances should you bring chametz into your hostess’s home. Even if you never want to come back.

Do: Choose and purchase your own wines if you’re a wine-schmekker. Meaning, if you’re going to be choosy about the wines, go ahead and sponsor your own.

Don’t: Sniff all the wines until you reluctantly choose one that meets your approval. And, certainly, the seder is not the place to practice your bartending skills and mix cocktails, leaving you drunk before karpas.

Do: Speaking of karpas, please inquire about the maximum serving from your LOR. If you must take doubles make it doubles of the saltwater instead.

Don’t: Mistake the karpas for a first course and hog the serving bowl. No matter how loud the singing is during maggid, we can definitely hear you when you crunch that celery.

Do: Eat your matzah over the table, preferably over a plate, no matter how far to the left you decide to lean. Only the designated cleaner-upper gets to eat wherever he/she wants. Oh, unless you’re at a nongebrokts family. Then you can be the cleaner-upper.

Don’t: Experiment with different yoga poses to find the most comfortable position to sit in while munching your korach sandwich.

Do: Eat the correct portion of maror, following the guidelines.

Don’t: Eat all the lettuce in the house — it took fifteen hours to wash and check, thank you very much; now is not the time to develop a sudden inspiration for healthier choices. And if you are getting that healthy

itch, you be the one to get Bubby’s grated horseradish for second seder.

Do: Save long, drawn-out discourses for the day-time meals. If you have school-age kids and truckloads of divrei torah remember that there’s a reason for the eight days of Pesach.

Don’t: Have each of your children read every single piece of paper they brought home from school for maggid, and then let them fall asleep during shulchan oreich. That, by the way, is the best time to talk… if you want people to actually listen.

Do: Put down those magazines and peel yourself off the couch when you hear your hostess puttering around in the kitchen before and after the seudos. In addition, you can volunteer to handle one specific during your entire visit. Some practical examples include sweeping, setup, cleanup, serving, taking out the garbage, and finding shidduchim for Cousin Yitty.

Don’t: Stand on ceremony and expect hotel service plus babysitting. Your hostess is entitled to a beautiful yom tov as well (afternoon-nap included), you’ll need to work together to make it happen!

Do: Strip linens from the beds and fold pack ‘n plays before your grand exit, without asking. Asking, “Should I strip the beds?” is equivalent to saying, “Do I really have to do this?”

Don’t: Make the beds instead of stripping the linens. Yeah, it looks pretty, but so does the chocolate-drizzled strawberry sorbet served with a dessert spoon that was just slobbered on by your adorable nephew with the perpetual-runny-nose. Need I say more?

Do: Take your belongings with you when you leave.

Don’t: Assume that your hostess will happily, and easily, find a delivery service for your husband’s (unused) toothbrush, Sarala’s haggadah, or little Yidel’s missing Shabbos shoe.

Do come again; your presence is almost as cherished as you think it is!

Mini Chocolate Coconut Bars

1 1/2 cups Unsweetened Shredded Coconut

1/4 cup Canned Coconut Milk

1 tbsp Maple Syrup

3 tbsps Coconut Oil (divided)

3 1/2 ozs Dark Chocolate

Line a small baking sheet or plate with parchment paper.

Add the shredded coconut, coconut milk, maple syrup, and 2/3 of the coconut oil to a food processor. Blend until a wet, coarse sand-like texture forms.

Form the coconut mixture into small bars approximately two inches long. Place the bars on the prepared baking sheet or plate and freeze for at least 30 minutes or until the logs are chilled and firm.

3. Meanwhile, melt the chocolate and the remaining coconut oil in a small bowl in 30-second increments in the microwave or by using a double boiler over the stove.

4. Using forks, carefully dip the coconut bars into the melted chocolate until completely covered. Allow any excess chocolate to drip off before placing the chocolate-covered coconut bar back on the baking sheet. Use a spoon to drizzle any remaining melted chocolate over the top of each bar, if desired.

5. Place the bars back in the freezer for at least 15 minutes or until the chocolate has set.

Store the bars in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer until ready to enjoy.

Optional: You can add almonds in the center of the coconut logs

Mini Raw Blueberry "Cheese"cakes

1/2 cup Almond Flour

1/2 cup Pitted Medjuel Dates

1 cup Cashews (soaked for at least two hours)

1/2 cup Frozen Blueberries

2 tsp Fresh Lemon Juice

1/4 cup Canned Coconut Milk

1/2 Banana

1. Pulse the almond flour and dates in a food processor until you create a crumbly, somewhat sticky mixture. Divide the mixture into your prepared muffin tray. Press the mixture down firmly to create a crust and set aside in the freezer.

Prepare a muffin tray with muffin liners or use a silicone muffin tray.

Wipe clean the food processor and add the cashews, blueberries, lemon juice, coconut milk, and banana. Blend the mixture until you get a smooth, creamy texture. Remove the muffin tray from the freezer and spread approximately two tablespoons of the cashew mixture on top of the crusts, being sure to evenly distribute the mixture.

Put the muffin tray back in the freezer for at least one hour to set.

When you are ready to enjoy the cheesecakes, remove them from the freezer five to ten minutes before to soften the cheesecake slightly. Enjoy!

1 stick of margarine or 1/2 cup of oil

16 Oz pareve chocolate or chocolate chips

7 eggs separated 1/2 cup of sugar

1 tsp vanilla

DIRECTIONS

Melt chocolate with margarine or oil and set aside

Beat egg whites until stiff, gradually add the sugar

Beat yolks well, add chocolate mixture and vanilla, fold into whites

Bake at 350° for about 20 minutes until cake is set, let cool.

Pour remaining mousse over cake and freeze until ready to serve

Pesach Brownie Bars

CRUST:

2 ½ cups almond flour

1 ¼ c. Bakers

Choice Potato Starch

1 ¼ c. sugar

2 eggs

½ c. oil

1 tsp. Bakers

Choice Vanilla Sugar

Pinch salt

CHOCOLATE FUDGE:

2 ¾ cups sugar

1 Tbsp. Bakers

Choice Vanilla Sugar

5 eggs

1 ¼ c. oil

1 ¼ c. Bakers Choice

Potato Starch

1 ¼ c. ground almonds

1 ¼ c. Bakers Choice

Dutch Cocoa

1 ¼ c. boiling water

½ c. chopped hazelnuts

1 c. Bakers Choice Real

Chocolate Chips

DIRECTIONS:

CRUST: In a bowl, combine the almond flour and potato starch. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well. Press into a lined cookie sheet. Bake on 350 for 15 minutes.

CHOCOLATE FUDGE: Beat together the sugars and eggs, add in the oil and mix well. Combine the potato starch and ground almonds and add into the mixture. Dissolve the cocoa in the hot water and add into the mixture. Pour over crust. Sprinkle with chopped hazelnuts and chocolate chips. Bake for another 40-45 minutes. Let cool and cut into bars.

One Pan Pesach Chicken and Potatoes

Ingredients:

4 chicken bottoms

8 medium potatoes

1 large onion

1/2 cup imitation soy sauce

1/4 cup of honey

4 frozen garlic cubes

Procedure:

Cut potatoes into cubes

Put on bottom of 9x13 pan

Slice onion thinly and put on top of potatoes

Place chicken pieces over onion

In a small bowl mix together

imitation soy sauce, honey and garlic

Pour over chicken

Bake covered @ 350 for 2 hours
