LakeviewMontessoriSchoolopenedin1978,inSt Mark’s churchhall,withapproximately14children Afterasuccessful firstyear,andwordofmouthadvertising,Lakeviewhadover 60childrenintwoclassroomsthenextyear.AsLakeview expanded,itmovedtoSt.Andrew’schurchin1981,andthento thecurrentsitein1984,wheretheyrentedandlater purchasedthepropertyafterayear.JaniceMayhewled Lakeviewforitsfirst30years,throughtimesofgrowthand expansionaswellasrecession."Iamproudtoseemyvision ofaMontessorischoolforchildreninthisareacontinuing today"saysJanice
"IdecidedtostartLakeviewMontessoriSchoolbackin1978, afterbeingexposedtoMontessorieducationduring1975,inmy 2ndyearatSheridanCollege’sEarlyChildhoodEducation Program.IobservedaMontessoriclassroomandwasvery impressedbytheyoungchildrenwhoworkedindependentlyat theirownpace,andwereabletoreadanddoMathworkat4 and5yearsold."Atthatpoint,Janicewasdeterminedtobring Montessorieducationtoasmanychildrenasshepossibly could In1981,sheopenedtheLMSTeacherEducationProgram totrainpeopleinMontessoriphilosophyandmaterials,sothey could,inturn,reachmanychildrenaroundtheworld.She continuestoshareherknowledgeandtrainteachers(MACTE accredited2006)tobeMontessoriansusingLakeview's Montessoridesignedclassrooms."Throughthisprogram,we havetrainedhundredsofMontessoriteachers,whonowteach inMontessorischoolsinCanada,USA,China,andmanyother countries."

Lakeviewhad220children during2005-2008,when Janiceretired.
"Enrollmentdroppedduring therecessionthatfollowed, soitwashearteningforme toseeenrollmentgoingup again,andanother expansionproject (completedin2019).Ilove theadditionoftheInfant andToddlerrooms,the roboticsroom,andthe beautifulnewgym!"
Thesecondbuildingproject around2004addedonmore classroomsupstairsand down.Astheyexpandedthey boughtthebuildingfurther EastthatusedtobeaMac’s Milkstore-theyuseditfor twoJuniorclassrooms, beforetheexpansionwas completed
"Therearesomanypeople whohelpedgrowLakeview… myparents,sons,friends andfamily,whopitchedin todowhateverwas needed…"Lakeviewboard members,volunteersand parentsattheschoolhelped throughthoseyearstoraise fundsforthedevelopment projects.

WhenJaniceretiredattheend ofJune2008,itwasquitean adjustmentforhertonotbeat theschoolwiththestudentsand staff."Istilllovetobeatthe schooltohelpwiththeTeacher Edprogram,orwithProfessional Development,ortojustchat withstaffIworkedwithor trained."
Lakeviewcontinuestobeapart inJanice'sfamilyasher grandsonnowattendsthe Infantroom.Hersons,Jonathon andChristopher,benefitted fromaMontessorieducation fromtheCasaprogramand throughmostofElementary. "Theyhavegrowninto intelligent,kind,independent, knowledgeableandcaringmen, andIamgratefulthatLakeview continuesonformygrandson andnextgenerations."

Prof HarriswasfirstintroducedtoMontessorieducationwhensheenrolledherchildrenat Lakeviewin1989 ShefellinlovewiththephilosophyanddecidedtotaketheLMSTeacher EducationprogramsoshecancontinuetolearnmoreandsharethebeautyofMontessori withotherchildrenthatshetaught.Herloveofthephilosophyis“respect”forthechild,respect one ’speersandrespectfortheenvironmentinwhichwelive.
