Let’s take a journey through the 2023-’24 school year to celebrate just a few accomplishments where every student has a chance to shine in their own unique way. The trophies and accolades earned by our students range from athletics to fine arts, and span each division, starting as early as third grade.

December

brought the holiday season and a momentous gift to Lakeview Academy – the first-ever Lanierland Tournament victory for our Lady Lions Varsity Basketball team. With their historic win, the varsity girls’ basketball team brought glory to themselves and elevated our school pride. It was their third appearance in the finals during the last five years, but this victory marked their first tournament championship.

Lakeview’s students – the true champions of ’23-’24 – brought home state championships as well as etched their names in school and Hall County history. Their success stories, a testament to their dedication and hard work, are a beacon of inspiration. Their success this past year filled the hallways with enthusiasm and school spirit.

March

was an exciting month with multiple state titles across athletics and fine arts. The Girls and Boys Varsity Basketball teams clinched the titles of GIAA-3A Basketball State Champions, making school history. They also made history in Hall County as the only boys’ and girls’ teams to win state basketball titles in the same year. To make things even more exciting, they both won in back-to-back games on the same night. First-year head coaches Ken Huffman (girls) and Benjie Wood (boys) were named Girls and Boys State Basketball Coaches of the Year.

Lakeview’s multi-year award-winning fine arts department performed well at the 2023 GIAA State Literary Competition. Emilia Horton, Kathryn McWhorter, and Abby McMahan won the Literary Trio state championship – while Hank Brock and Parker White took home the state title for Literary Duo Interpretation, and Abigail Baker was named the state champion for the Literary Humorous Interpretation.

Lakeview’s Mario KartTM eSports team was undefeated and finished first in regular season play in the PlayVS Eastern Region, The Eastern Region comprises over 100 teams along the eastern part of North America, from Florida to Canada. This sport is gaining popularity, and Lakeview is one of the few schools in the area to have a competing team.

Then Emmie Finley successfully defended her state title being named GIAA-3A State Shot Put Champion for the second year in a row with a personal record of 36! She also finished second place in the Discus for the state and region. Emmie will move on as a collegiate athlete competing on Western Carolina University’s track and field team.

wrapped up the year as our 3rd Grade classes placed 4th worldwide against almost 30,000 classes in the national IXL Spring earning Showdown.

Lakeview is more than a school with success; it’s a family. Our three-year-olds through seniors are linked through a network of dedicated faculty that sets high expectations while consistently pouring out love and support. This blend creates an environment where students of all ages can form lasting connections, fostering an unparalleled sense of belonging.

Dear Lakeview Family,

This annual issue of our school magazine looks back on a year of championships in innovation, athletics, fine arts, and academics. We celebrate these significant accomplishments, and I am so proud of all our Lakeview students who are, in my opinion, champions because of their perseverance to learn, mature, and grow.

We also celebrate our parents, grandparents, friends, faculty and staff who made the 23-24 school year a remarkable one in terms of giving. You gave your time and talents, but you also gave your treasure which meant success for the Imagine capital campaign. We raised $6.8 million, and the construction of a new fine arts teaching facility is underway. This expansive addition to our campus includes the renovation of the lower school gym, including heat and air conditioning, electronic goals, and LED lighting. Wow! Thank you to all our donors who made this possible.

You will also read about the Lion Fund, the annual auction, and GOAL, all programs which add to every area of our school, from new technology, facility improvements, and scholarship opportunities for new students. Read more beginning on page 22.

Lakeview’s first graduating class celebrates their 50th reunion this year. Read comments and memories from these graduates on pages 14-15 I think you’ll see that the values of Lakeview 50 years ago still hold true today.

I’m grateful for all our families, students, and staff who make Lakeview the wonderful school it is. As always, it’s a great day to be a Lion!

Alumni Spotlight

Lakeview’s first graduating class celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The class of five seniors – Charles Lance, Frank Norton, Jr., Kathy Kirkpatrick Oates, Robin Patterson (deceased), and Rusty Tether –say they were seniors for four years as a grade was added each year to grow the school.

Frank and Kathy recently met in person while Rusty joined by phone from his home in New Mexico to talk about their Lakeview years.

Lakeview is known as a school where students are involved in a variety of activities. Was that true when you were students?

FN | “Oh, gosh yes. We were thrust into doing lots of things that would not have been available to us at a larger school.”

RT | “Sports were a big part of the school – tennis, horseback riding. At 6’1” I was the center on the basketball team. At any other school I would have been lucky to be on a team.”

KO | “We all had to participate in most activities, or they would not have happened.”

How would you describe your relationship with your teachers?

FN | “Rosemary Johnston Dodd was our volunteer art teacher and she pushed me out of my comfort zone. We would not have had that type of art instruction at another school.”

FN | “We developed personal relationships with our teachers so that when I went to Georgia Tech I was not shy to form relationships with my college teachers. That was also true when my children attended Lakeview.”

As the first graduating class, do you recall establishing traditions that are still carried on today? For instance, the white dresses worn by the girls at graduation.

KO | “I have no idea where the idea for the white dresses came from, but I wore one. Our graduation ceremony was held in the sunken library on campus in the original building.

KO | “I was the first May queen, but I don’t recall how or why that tradition began either.”

Lakeview’s 1st Graduating Class Celebrates 50 th A NNIVERSARY

1974

Were you aware of your parents being involved at school?

RT | “I never thought about the impact of our parents until this conversation. They brought lunch to school, chaperoned parties – they did everything.”

FN | “The first families each contributed $2,000 to start the school. That was a lot of money at the time. My dad helped find and buy the land for the current campus from Skinny Waldrip.”

KO | “My father helped to develop the equestrian program and hired Col. Graham to run it. Col. Graham was a riding instructor at a summer camp I attended. My father was a believer in lifetime sports, that’s why he was interested in the equestrian program.”

FN | “Our parents had a vision for us to have an education similar to a private school like Westminster or Woodward in Atlanta. While we were a small school, we had a senior trip, a spring party and a fall party, and we had an annual (yearbook) our first year. We had all the basics of a bigger school.”

KO | Equestrian team, picking up rocks on the field during physical education class, and being a physical education teacher aide for younger classes.

RT | “My parents would be thrilled at how advanced Lakeview is today.”

Do you know why the school was named Lakeview?

FN | “We were named for the street. At that time, there was a view of Brenau Lake on the other side of Lakeview Drive. The lake is long gone now.”

The 1974 annual includes a two-page spread of your photos and an essay about the liberation of men and women. It doesn’t say who wrote it.

KO | “I’m fairly sure I wrote it; I was the only girl in the class. Frank and I were the editors of the annual.”

The topic seems unusual for a high school annual.

KO | “It was the culture of the time coming at the end of the Vietnam War. It might seem unusual, but I think bright students will always know what’s going on culturally.”

Favorite memory?

RT | “We went to the first-grade classroom and got in the attic above the room to ring bells for Santa’s sleigh. Where else were you going to do that? And we helped decorate their Christmas tree.”

FN | “Sitting in Rosemary Dodd’s kitchen after school brainstorming ideas for the Lakeview auction. The student council sold eight-track tapes at the auction to raise money.”

What did Lakeview give you?

FN | “I am what I am today because of Lakeview. It gave me tools and the encouragement to do anything I set my mind to.”

KO | “Because we did everything at Lakeview, I felt like I could do anything. I went to Salem College and became president of the student body.”

Are you planning a reunion?

KO | “We’ve been invited to Gainesville High School’s Class of ’74 reunion. We were all friends.”
