Careless Campers Vs Communities. While some legitimately use freedom camping to enjoy New Zealand’s natural environment, there are others who take advantage. It’s time we have an honest conversation about the ‘Careless campers’. Careless campers believe there is no need to pre-book accommodation. New Zealand’s special spots have been tainted by careless campers washing themselves, dishes and clothes in our waterways. Using the bush and rest areas as open-air toilets, and leaving behind rubbish for the community to pick up and dispose of. I wonder how they came to believe that this was an option and who is promoting or, more accurately, pimping out New Zealand to the careless camper. Why are we, as a country and community making a commitment to the careless camper, by providing more free facilities for their exclusive use? Who is gaining financially from the careless camper and who foots the bill to ‘host’ them? Our petition launched last summer to change freedom camping regulations gained more than 15,000 signatures from all over the country. It’s very clear that we are fed up with New Zealand being pimped out and it is affecting visitor experience as much as our sense of home. A group of us have since investigated the Freedom Camping Act 2011, talked to local and national government, and talked to campers and camping organisations.

The petition from last summer wasn’t enough. If there is change, it’s incremental. More action is required. It’s time to turn our values into a strong vision for our country and what we want it to be in the future for both visitors and especially those who live here. The quantity over quality scenario, where we encourage as many people as we can to visit New Zealand, is damaging! We value our country and its residents and gladly welcome travellers who are not taxing on our environment and our way of life. But the cost of welcoming too many travellers, and the unbridled growth and promotion of New Zealand as a destination for camping and self-drive holidays, seems to cost the communities and other visitors their enjoyment of our green spaces and puts pressure on our environment and infrastructure. We are coming up to that season again where we also know that safety on our roads is an issue. I truly believe that we are making progress – but it’s too slow. All New Zealanders must continue to actively encourage and apply pressure on local and central government to solve our ‘Careless Camper’ issues. We have a lot of smart people with solutions. Let’s be heard as a community and refuse to accept being overrun, yet again, by that select group of people who don’t know or care to do better.

Christmas Message

While some are winding down for a welldeserved break, we’re winding up for a busy summer travel season ahead. It certainly feels like Christmas in the terminal with the decorations up and our team sporting elf ears and Santa hats! We also just had our first Christmas Community Day which was loads of fun and supported “Let’s Eat”, a great local charity which converts surplus supermarket food into meals for those in need. Providing a safe, friendly and memorable experience is our aim every day and over the past 12 months we’ve continued to invest in improving the customer experience from “park-to-plane”. New flight information display screens, internal and external signage, landscaping and parking technology have been introduced or upgraded to assist our customers move through and enjoy the airport. Various airfield and terminal improvement projects are also well progressed. These include the new international/domestic departure swing lounge, expanded space for border agency staff and customer processing, and a full resurfacing of the aircraft parking area using sustainable asphalt (recycled beer bottles and used toner cartridges included!). As far as long-term planning goes, we continue to be focused on facilitating sustainable growth in the Southern Lakes region over the next 30 years. Key to that will be our ongoing work on the master plans for both Queenstown and Wanaka airports. Once developed, the master plans will provide for connected and complementary aviation centres to support the growth of the communities and businesses across the region. We’ve learned a lot from our engagement with the communities we serve over the past year and look forward to continuing that engagement as we progress our long-term planning initiatives in the year ahead. I’d like to encourage each of you to work with us to help shape the exciting future of both airports. No doubt many of you will be moving around the country by air and road over the holiday season and we’re hopeful that you all have a safe and stress-free travel experience. MP for Clutha-Southland Christmas has been and gone and I’d like to wish you all a happy season’s greetings. For those in the area for the holidays, welcome, we hope you enjoy our piece of paradise as much as we do. For those still here working away or spending time with family, enjoy! I hope you manage some sort of break and spend it with those most important to you. As I continue to look back on the year that was 2018, I do so knowing we have achieved some wonderful things in Queenstown. I’m continuing to have many discussions and push for a communityowned health model for the Lakes District Hospital, which will serve our needs better than what we have had. On the housing front, I successfully lobbied the Minister to increase the housing cap by $100,000. I’ve also been lobbying the Housing Minister for several months on KiwiBuild to ensure we are getting our fair share of the pie. Watch this space. As we head into 2019, I want to ensure you, I’ll be continuing to advocate for what we need here in Queenstown. In the Immigration space, I’ve been asking the Minister for an Immigration Specialist similar to a mobile manager in the Queenstown area. I had some success in this space earlier this year after I expressed the difficulties people were having with the time taken to process visas, and an emergency phone number and email were provided. Our businesses couldn’t survive without the amazing staff we have here in Queenstown, which is why I raised the issue with the Prime Minister at the beginning of the year. I am also fighting for the critical investment needed in infrastructure to help with the continued increase in tourism in the region. Until next year – happy holidays. Over fifty years ago now, Queenstown came of age as a holiday destination. 1967 was the year Skyline Gondola opened for the first time. In 1988 AJ Hackett and his mates strapped some rubber bands to their feet and opened the worlds first bungy jumping operation. The theme of invention and adventure has continued to the point we now have a full smorgasbord of outdoor activity and sun based fun to chose from. You can boat or trek to far off corners of the Wakitipu or Wanaka regions, race cars in Cromwell and go to music festivals all over the district, who would have thought this would happen way back when Queenstown had 3 pubs that all served the same beer, same food and even played the same music? Nowadays the choices for food and beverage are truly off the hook, a favorite part of the summer in the Wakitipu is the long evenings, perfect for leisurely strolls, bar lounging or cruising by the lakes edge. The is no need to rush a meal or miss out on the fun activities when the sun is up at 5.30 and not setting until 10pm. Welcome to summer in Central Otago. However navigating the choices and finding the local experience is not always straightforward. In the next few pages you will find our tips and tricks to making the most of you time in Queenstown and the surrounding district. Visits to ski fields at Coronet, Remarkables, Cardrona or even Treble Cone shouldn’t be confined to winter. All the mountain areas offer plenty of summer time fun Hike The Slopes

Try a New Outdoor Adventure

Ski Resorts have dozens of possible treks ranging from easy to strenuous. The slopes that are so much fun when covered with snow are great to exlore when the ground is bare and in many of the resorts offer great hiking in the off season. Your hotel or accommodation teams will be able to give you some great options.

In addition to hiking, the mountains beckon when its not time to ski, with activities like horse back riding, climbing, biking, and rides with off road vehicles. Many of the ski fields have these available as activities during the off season. There is often more to do on the fields than during the ski season.

Mountain Bike The Cardrona Bike Park features a variety of lift-accessed downhill mountain bike trails for all levels of rider to enjoy. Over 25km of trails for all levels of rider from beginner through to advanced. With some of the longest vertical descents in the country. McDougall’s Chondola & Whitestar Express lifts run daily from 10am – 4pm & until 8pm on Friday nights. Cardrona Mountain Bike Park is open every day from December 1, 2018 – March 31, 2019 (closed Christmas Day).

Go Fishing

This is Cardrona’s newest gravity-fuelled activity – mountain carting! No prior experience is needed for this fun downhill activity, just a sense of adventure & a thirst for FUN! There are three mountain cart trails to choose from, the longest of which is over 3km & spans all the way out to Captain’s Basin, & back to Whitestar Express.

The fresh melted snow feed into our amazing river system fishing areas. There is spectacular fly fishing across the region. Its such a relaxing sport that anyone can try. Best of all the local sports stores offer everything you need to go fly fishing including advise on the best locations.

The melted snow fill the streams and rivers that flow into the lakes. There are some incredible white water rafting, paddle boarding, swimming and jet boat rides that all come into their own. Check with the tour groups, check out the QueenstownNZ App or online for local operators and deals. When checking them out just make sure they are they have good feedback from others who have been before you.

Way down south and isolated from the big cities and there light pollution the ski fields can offer incredible opportunities to see the stars. Skyline in Queesntown offers Star Gazing and there is also, Cardrona, Tekapo and incredible viewing. Its just a long night as it gets dark late... Your accommodation may be able to provide wine blankets to keep warm as it can be cool at night. Nestled in the heart of the Southern Alps, the Cardrona Valley offers some of the best conditions on Earth for stargazing. Not only does it have a dark sky with minimal light pollution, but it’s far enough south to have a great vantage point to view the famous Southern Sky, and you may even see the Southern Lights!

A few of our favourite rides

Lake Hayes Trail 8 km loop | Grade 3 / Intermediate A gorgeous scenic trail around Lake Hayes – which often provides magnificent reflections of the surrounding mountains. The perfect option if you only have an hour or two to spare.

Queenstown to Kelvin Peninsula 16.8 km one way | Grade 2 / Easy Starting at the entrance to the Queenstown Gardens, follow the Frankton Track as it cruises along the edge of Lake Wakatipu to the historic pedestrian only Kawarau Falls Bridge. From here, drop down onto the Kelvin Peninsula Trail and enjoy stunning views back across the lake to Queenstown. After passing the Yacht Club, keep an eye out for the gorgeous sculptures hidden along this section. The trail continues around the golf course and loops back on itself at Grove Lane where you can decide to pedal back the way you came or at this point, continue on to Jack’s Point for a more challenging but truly stunning ride through golden tussock.

Arrowtown to Gibbston 20 km one way | Grade 2 / Easy One of the most popular trails in the region, this trail runs alongside the willow-lined Arrow River, zig zagging across five bridges, including the spectacular 80m Edgar suspension bridge. You’ll ride down quiet country lanes and enjoy some of the best views from the Wakatipu Basin before crossing under the highway and arriving at the Kawarau Suspension Bridge and onwards into the Valley of Vines – home to Central Otago’s finest Pinot Noir.

Twin Rivers Trail 18 km one way | Grade 3 / Intermediate Hugging two of New Zealand’s most picturesque rivers, this is a stunning trail that captures some truly dramatic scenery. It is the most remote section of trail in the network so ensure you take snacks and water along for the journey. Start at the Kawarau Falls Bridge near Frankton and follow the Twin Rivers Trail signs towards Gibbston. Enjoy sweeping views up to the Remarkables mountain range and down into the aquamarine waters of the Kawarau River. The trail ends at Morven Ferry Road where there are options to continue to Arrowtown or Gibbston and refreshments at the historic Kawarau Suspension Bridge.

I’ve had the pleasure of opening a playground, a walkway, a rainbow crossing, the Winter Festival and Winter Games, some fantastic new hotels, Polyfest, a number of new businesses, many conferences, several sporting events, and even a new cemetery. And, I’ve been delighted to participate in over a dozen citizenship ceremonies. All of these events showcase the colour and uniqueness of our special corner of the world. Art News NZSA Oral History Podcasts Governments threatening freedom of speech, meetings in exotic European cities with exiled authors, battles with institutions who determined livelihoods and spats about the best way to face these challenges. No, it’s not the plot of the latest thriller, it’s the history of New Zealand literature in the 1980s and 90s. From tussles with Muldoon to protecting basic rights to freedom of expression, the New Zealand Society of Authors (PEN NZ Inc) has launched a podcast series sharing the story of New Zealand literature in turbulent times. The podcast is hosted by Karyn Hay – one of the first television presenters to present speaking in a Kiwi accent, at a time when BBCstyle received pronunciation was compulsory. Karyn draws on interviews with more than twenty writers, including Gordon McLauchlan, Lauris Edmond, Kevin Ireland, Tessa Duder, Witi Ihimaera and Joy Cowley. The writers also talk about working to improve pay and conditions, promoting NZ literature and developing a community for local writers.

Simply called ‘Live Session at The Library’, Sofia collaborated with fellow students to create, record and produce the music. “I’m studying music at art school in Wellington and was living in the Halls of Residence with other art and music students, so I made the most out of the opportunity and collaborated with other art students in my flat. “I’ve made some really good friends out of it,” she says. In November, Sofia released a cover of Bon Iver’s ‘Holocene’, recorded live from her student accommodation. The video was viewed more than 1,000 times on Facebook in a week. “It was a practice session for the Library gig, but I loved it so much I thought it’d be good to release it to get the ball rolling for the EP,” she says. Sofia’s pared-back, acoustic guitar and mellow folk/indie sounds have already made their mark regionally. At just 13 years old, Sofia won Best Female Musician at the Smoke-Free Rock Festival and this inspired her to focus more seriously on her music. She’s since won a number of other regional competitions, including Battle of the Musos, and has played at the Queenstown Winter Festival for the past three years. Moving to Wellington to study for a Bachelor of Commercial Music was her “first step moving out”, and has proved to be a great place to meet other musicians and develop and expand her repertoire. “I’ve been taking the opportunity to be influenced by the guys I’ve been around, learning to use more tech and learning how to use synths, drums and how to produce. My Uni flatmates have helped heaps! Next year, I’ll test the waters a wee bit with it.” ‘Live Session at The Library’ will be true to her home-grown style, but with the added benefits of professional sound recording and production and music videos. Due to be released on 4th January on digital platforms Spotify, iTunes, Apple music and YouTube, the liverecorded EP will include three original songs.
