Happy Holidays to everyone! I have enjoyed taking some time to reflect on the year that has been. It has been a busy and memorable year in many ways. We started the year with the announcement of an election date, and I dedicated a great deal of time to travelling across the Southland electorate talking with folks about their concerns and priorities. The Southland electorate is incredible but also vast (literally bigger than Belgium) and so a lot of time was spent on the road travelling to all corners. There have been significant challenges along the way in Queenstown. As businesses began to hum it became apparent that the usual short term rental housing stock was very low and it was impacting people needing to rent and those who were wanting to staff their businesses. The Queenstown Lakes District has continued to be one of the most desirable places to move to in New Zealand, with population growth streaking ahead of all other parts of New Zealand, with the district growing by 8%. Meaning 1 in every 12 people didn’t live in the district a year ago. I invited Hon Chris Bishop to Queenstown to help get a clear understanding of the issue and Chris announced some of the housing policy to help return confidence to those landlords who had stopped or were looking at stopping renting. It will be a priority of the new government to get those policies in place. I hosted a range of National Party MPs, including Prime Minister Luxon and Deputy Leader Nicola Willis in Queenstown this year. They appreciated the opportunity to connect with Queenstown locals on a business and personal level multiple times this year.

I am always advocating for the Queenstown Lakes community within caucus and representing the whole Southland electorate every time I am in Parliament. In the lead up to the election I was able to secure an additional $100 million in funding for roading upgrades in and around Queenstown over the next decade. I am looking forward to seeing this funding roll out and I am confident that this significant investment in Queenstown Lakes roading network will be of significant benefit to all in the Wakatipu Basin. The year was quick to roll around to election day on 14 October. I am exceptionally proud and humbled to have received the largest ever number of candidate votes in this region, and I am looking forward to reciprocating the confidence placed in me by continuing to be a strong advocate for our region within the new government. My offices will be taking a well-earned break over the summer period, returning on 8 January, 2023. You are always able to email Joseph.MooneyMP@parliament.govt.nz to contact our offices.

Cheers to an amazing upcoming 2024! Joseph Mooney, Member of Parliament for Southland

Things that will surprise first-time visitors to Queenstown You think you know Queenstown: it’s basically a small geographic area neatly surrounded by mountains, lakes and interconnected by rivers with a collection of villages sitting in between. Well, not quite. While it is indeed easy to navigate with a car and it is centered on one of the world’s most iconic locations, there’s so much more to Queenstown than meets the eye. If you’re a first-time visitor you will be surprised in numerous ways. Its stunning beauty The beauty never fails to inspire, with its huge number of gorgeous grand vistas and impressive hikes, as well as the serene Queenstown Gardens. There is lakeside wandering available along the Frankton Trail, Lakes Hayes and along the Arrowtown Trail. The north-south divide The Remarkables mountain range is breathtaking and rugged and always impresses especially in the early morning sun. It is well and truly Remarkable by name because of its dominant position. Locals know it simply as The Remarks but even many locals don’t know that the Remarkables Range is one of just two mountain ranges in the world that runs north – south, the other btw is The Rockies in North America. We have four wine regions What the hell? It’s not widely appreciated just how good the region’s wine is. There is not one but four world class wine regions all within an hour of the CBD.

It almost doesn’t seem real. And yet, jump in the car and and head towards Cromwell and you will hit the Lake Hayes wineries, including highly-regarded Amisfield winery and Mora wines. Beyond that is the Gibbston, Cromwell and Bannockburn offerings or a little further afield are Wānaka’s wineries. Just about every one of them has a cellar door and many have a restaurant attached. Phenomenal. If beer or spirits is more your style There are micro-breweries and many breweries. You don’t even have to leave the town’s limits to get your hands on freshly brewed, small-batch beer. Searchlight Breweries, Altitude and Canyon breweries are all within a bike ride of downtown. Arrowtown, Glenorchy, Wānaka all have their own microbreweries with great quality beers on offer. There’s bad food (but not much) It is possible, if you really try, to have a bad meal in Queenstown. By and large, however, the restaurants here offer great food options, from modest eateries, trendy cafes, wine bars, stylish bistros to the pinnacles of fine dining. You could come here just to eat, and you would leave happy. The laneways really are cute Downtown there are the laneways. Cows Lane, Searle Lane and Church Lane. Aren’t they just small walking streets? Kinda dingy? A little on the sketchy side? Yes, to all of those things, and yet these narrow passageways really are worthy of exploration. Bars, restaurants, boutiques, galleries – they’re all hidden down laneways.

Culture is everywhere Into live music and a big nightlife? Queenstown has something on nearly every night. A fan of visual art? You will find galleries and art across the town. If you are in Frankton, do pop into Te Atamira at Remarkables Town Centre. It’s worth a visit. While Queenstown is a small town it well and truly punches above its weight in the culture department. Shopping in Southern Lakes While the Southern Lakes region and Queenstown, in particular, has the reputation as the countrie’s adventure playground with arguably more adrenaline-thumping adventure per square metre than anywhere else, we also punch above our weight when it comes to a surprisingly varied retail landscape. So, when you’re looking for a change of pace how about a shopping and gallery-hopping expedition.

Queenstown is a reasonably small town of around 30,000 residents but there is also an extensive offering of high-quality retail brands intermingled with extraordinarily talented artists, photographers and designers. The CBD is the visitor shopping precinct, while the Remarkables Park | Five Mile are more for locals. Arrowtown is a joy to wander around and Country Lane is a surprising artisan offering just out of town. New on the retail scene is Ayburn Domain Precinct which is set down a winding lane past the old Ayburn Homestead and adjacent to Millbrook Resort and Waterfall Park. Ayburn Domain Precinct is just minutes from Arrowtown and 15 minutes from Queenstown and the latest addition to Queenstown’s cuisine culture. The food and hospitality destination will appeal to visitors and locals alike. It comes with manicured landscaping and restorative planting. The precinct is made up of a collection of original farm buildings that were once stables, a cart

shed, dairy and woolshed and have been reimagined and repurposed. The precinct will include a landmark restaurant, bar, cellar door, delicatessen and parlour. In the CBD you’ll find a suite of new retail stores that have opened in the year. While a little over 12 months since its opening T Galleria by DFS and Eat Space on the ground floor continue to anchor a resurgence in new retail and dining options in the CBD. At the corner of Beach and Ress street is the new RM Williams store that compliments the nearby Rodd and Gunn. Further down Beach Street is a new store for Angel Devine and Patagonia. Meanwhile on Rees Street Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger have also opened Queenstown locations. Around the corner in the Queenstown Mall is a relatively new Flo and Frankie store. When the shopping has exhausted the wallet, pop over to Earl Street and give your eyeballs a treat at StarkWhite Gallery and

Milford Gallery along with two stunning photography studios that must be seen to be believed. Cory Marshall is right next door to StarkWhite while Romer Gallery is a couple of doors down from Milford Gallery. Artbay is around the corner on Marine Parade and is housed in one of the town’s historic buildings. The Artbay team also opened Lightworx Gallery a few years back on Church Street. Take a wander through the Queenstown Gardens and on Park Street you will find The Ivy Box which has been a local favorite since it opened in 2015. It was originally the town’s butcher shop and its new iteration as a gallery aims to encourage local artists and provide a place where they can share their passion for art and zest for life.

Hoopsadaisy (Jodie)

Choice (Paul and Claire)

Juggling Jack Flash (Simon)

Meet some of Queenstown’s buskers By Jess Allen

If you’re strolling along Queenstown’s picturesque waterfront any day of the week, you’ll get to enjoy a sweet show from one of the many street performers dotted around. From opera singers and jugglers to singing dogs, hula hoopists, talented musicians and dancers – there’s much to see and enjoy.

“It’s one of my favourite spots to work in the world – even if it wasn’t my hometown,” says Simon. “Historically, the evenings have been time for the circle shows and musicians take out the day. In summer, it gets busy – we get, sometimes, nine circle shows in town. My character is called Juggling Jack Flash and I have a specific interest in club juggling, which a lot of people refer to as pins. I have a Guinness World Record – juggling blindfolded on a rola bola – so I break my world record, which is what the whole show is built around. It’s mostly comedy – I tell terrible dad jokes, which are the ones that seem to fly on the street the best.

One of the best parts of enjoying the buskers is that you never know what you’re going to get. In addition to a rotating door of performers coming and going with the seasons and to suit their lifestyle, the artists regularly mix up their shows. Each day the buskers meet to agree on where they’ll set up and what time slot they have to ensure a fair deal for all.

“It’s one of the best jobs that you could ever have – people clap and cheer for you before you’ve even done your job – there’s not many industries you could get into where that happens, or where they’ll clap for you at all. It’s great. I get to go out and share my passion with people passing on the street, make their days a little better, share a few jokes with them, and show them some things they’d otherwise never normally see.”

Many of those we’ve spoken to agree that we’ve got some amazing artists performing in Queenstown, offering world-class entertainment and promoting a lovely atmosphere along the beautiful lakefront. We’re a little more chilled out than other parts of the world, and the transient nature here means buskers get a fresh audience every day to showcase their talents to.

Jodie, better known as Hoopsadaisy, is a newer member of Queenstown’s busking scene, starting last Christmas. A few weeks after launching her show, she had the privilege of working with Fraser Hooper, a clown and British director, who helped her to refine some elements of her show. She’s a clown – a quirky character who loves 90’s music, hip hop and hula hoops. Her show features a dash of comedy and some daredevil stunts. Originally a primary-trained teacher, she’s recently taken the plunge and started performing full time, which she describes as exhilarating, and she finds herself humming with excitement after each performance.

Claire and Paul are behind duo, Choice, which formed in Queenstown in 2003. They’re seasoned performers that have played to audiences in Australia, NZ, Ireland, South America and England. Since starting out along the lakefront, they now work fulltime as musicians and have been in and out of Queenstown – they both agree that this is one of the best spots in the world to perform. “We do events and festivals, but the busking is one of the things we enjoy the most,” says Paul. “And we get to play our own original music – we’re able to sell CDs and get our name out there. We get festival gigs, and special gigs out of busking – people see us on the street – and we do markets and things like that,” adds Claire.

“I just started performing and I’ve had such an amazing experience in Queenstown that I’m leaving to go to the UK to attend the Edinburgh Fringe Festival,” says Jodie. It’s been a really amazing platform for me as a performer, and to just follow my dreams. The other street performers have been really encouraging because I’m quite a newbie, in terms of giving me advice and also helping with the rules – I know Simon and some of the other performers that have been busking for a while had spoken to the council about what that looks like and how we organise ourselves.

Paul says “It’s for community, mainly, for me and Claire – we’re never down there on our own. There’s always at least three or four food carts, jewellery sellers, people selling their own drawings or photographs, and we all support each other. It’s kind of like a market, I guess. You all look forward to seeing each other each day – they’re your colleagues. When we go down there’s a real nice buzz about with heaps of people on holidays. We’re making a living doing something we really enjoy.”

“It’s really interesting because it puts you in touch with a lot of the store people that are there in the afternoon. When we go down in the evening, we get chatting with them about the streets and how their day has been – it’s really nice to connect with people in the community, not just other buskers, and people that come in and out of Queenstown as well. Queenstown is the place I now call home and I look forward to coming back with a bigger and better show for the Christmas holidays.”

“You’ve got flights of international tourists coming here directly – tens of thousands of them walking past every day. We’ve got a real hotspot for showing our art, or whatever you do. It’s a real, sort of, catchment area,” says Claire. Simon West is the man behind the moniker of Juggling Jack Flash. He’s a circus performer from NZ who specialises in juggling, acrobatics and magic, and puts on a 45-minute show. He started busking in Queenstown back in 2004 – he was part of the local fire spinning troupe who were involved with events around town such as Winter Festival. After this, he got a job as a bartender with Cirque du Soleil travelling for a year, which inspired him to go to circus school. After becoming a full-time street performer in 2011, he’s now performed all over the world and will be spending summers in Queenstown.

So now that you know a few of the friendly waterfront faces, why not swing by and say hey? You’re guaranteed to find some whimsical fun, have a great time, and help these entertainers continue doing what they love – giving us all a bit of enjoyment.

Top 6 Public BBQ Spots in Queenstown

Swim spots in and around Queenstown Our lakes and waterways may be cold but when that heat gets up a swim at these spots will refresh your summery soul.

Visitors and locals alike share a common love for the public BBQ and we happen to have a few around the basin.

Jack’s Point

We’ve ranked the selection of prime BBQ spots available in Queenstown.

Homestead Bay This rocky beach boasts a rare view with no development. Continue driving straight past the Jac’k Point Clubhouse, until you hit a gravel road. Crystal clear waters and local dwellers dotted along the half moon bay with Cecil Peak right on your doorstep. No jetty, just waltz your way in.

Omer Park

People seem to forget about these close to town BBQ additions. Continue pass Steamer Wharf and you’ll see the beautiful gas BBQ on display in the middle of the lush greenery over looking the Queenstown Gardens. Continue further down the curvy path and you’ll find ANOTHER ONE! That’s x2 public bbqs on Omer Park. Parking may be an issue.

Hanley Farm

Sunshine Bay

Kick flips and patty flips go hand in hand for this new BBQ zone. A plethora of activities to keep the kids occupied - including a fantastic pump track. Bring beers, bikes, stuff for BBQ and monitor the kids, with a cheeky bevvy.

Little Thailand This one is for the dare devils. Continue further past Sunshine Bay and the road will start to climb. You’ll notice cars parked randomly on the side of the road. This is the entrance to the popular 2–3 storey jumping cliff.

Fernhill Reserve

The BBQ spot at altitude. Fernhill is a fairly underrated spot for a public fry up. Epic views of Queenstown, with a play ground next to it and a sloping green pasture to spread out your creations.

Sunshine Bay This secluded little beach usually gets forgotten. The boat ramp just 3 minutes past the Sunshine Bay turn off is a a nice spot for a dip. Deep waters and a jetty to jump off + toilet facilities are an added bonus too.

Frankton Beach domain

Down by the Frankton shoreline hosts a popular public BBQ spot. Frequently dominated by the self contained camper. If unoccupied, best to check if the gas bottle is empty or if occupied, negotiate the cook up of goods then travel a little down the beach to have a the scenic picnic you desired.

Arrowtown Arrow River Fancy a walk in Arrowtown? Grab your ice cream and bring your togs’n’towel too. Walk the track along the Arrow river and you’ll come across many deep sections of the river. The most noticeable spot for a dip has a rope swing. Cascaded in tree shade, water commitment can be from tippy toe to fully immersed.

Kelvin Heights

Kelvin Heights Peninsula is known as the Sunshine Strip, one of the last places to see the sun. At the ski lane towards the end you’ll find a small stoneage BBQ. Be warned, this is a ghetto twig set up. Not recommended as a reliable public BBQ spot but the location (MWAH!) highly recommended as the perfect sunset dinner date.

Kelvin Heights

Lake Hayes Estate

Yacht Club When summer has arrived, Kelvin Heights is the place to go for a dive.

McBride Park proudly wears its public BBQ facilities on its sign. Just pass the Hayes cafe, the park boasts a reasonably large green space with decent range of kid friendly activities. The area is enclosed by houses (so no scenic wow factor) and BBQ facility located awkwardly close to the playground.

There are many swim spots on this Peninsula but the most glorious is the jetty at the Yacht Club. Drive like your heading to the Golf club then take a sharp turn down one of the gravel roads. There’s a rope swing, grass to lounge on, open log cabin and jetty to dive off. Perfection.

You could literally chuck a sausage to them while they’re swinging. Suitable for the suburban community gathering.

The Whakatipu’s Big Day Out

Lake Hayes Show expected to attract close to 5000 Prize sheep will be sweating it out in pens, there’ll be farm machinery galore, quirky races and candy floss faces, the agricultural smells of hot scorched grass and the odd hint of dung wafting in the air. It’s the Whakatipu’s big Kiwi day out – the Lake Hayes Agricultural & Pastural Show at the Lake Hayes Showgrounds on 13 January. In another tough year when financial pressures have been starting to bite the show’s theme will be mental health in the rural sector, local A & P Society president Kate Hamiton says. Rural Support Trust ambassador Matt Chisholm - ex Celebrity Treasure Island TV frontman-turned farmer, will be roaming the grounds connecting with the rural community and addressing the crowds from the stage. “We’re desperately excited to have Matt to open up that communication, what with wool and sheep prices there are a lot of struggling farmers and mental health is being affected,” Hamilton says. “Life pressures are hard. Rural people are cracker people, the backbone of this community. They know the environment, the land, and way the town has changed that land around them,” she says. “We want to communicate with rural people from farms as far as Clyde and

inland, beyond Glenorchy and isolated highcountry stations across the water to tap in and make sure everybody’s ok, let them know we care.” Delicious homemade chutneys and jams and beautiful fresh garden flowers will adorn the pavilion with judging kicking off the evening before. Nadia Lim will give a cooking demonstration and her Royalburn Station team will also be providing delicious food. There’s even a bar this year. Sheep shearing, farmyard, children’s entertainment, equestrian events, and trade hubs will be dotted about the fairgrounds and the Hobby Horse Race is sure to attract a good crowd to the main arena. Prime sheep and other animals will be on display ready for the judges’ critique in the hunt for ‘Champion Overall Stock’ and the best fleeces in the land will vie for trophy honours in the wool tent. Hamilton herself is a National Royal Agricultural Society equestrian judge, who travels the country judging at rural shows and events. “We are very blessed to have such a beautiful, picturesque setting for this show and it’s always so well put together. It’s a prestige thing to come and I’m chuffed to

now be president of such an amazing event.” She says there’s been a lot of work gone into organising the show by many wonderful volunteers as red tape and regulations get tighter. The new working hunter equestrian class will require horses to demonstrate the ability to jump over three fences. In the home industries section, they’ll be searching out the ‘funniest looking vegetable’, and the best ‘arrangement’ based on the song title, ‘Red, Red Wine’ by UB40. There’ll be a tug of war and lolly scrambles for the kids and the local Search and Rescue helicopter will be parked up, while on call. “This year we’re encouraging people to bike to the show along the bike trails, use park and ride, or catch the free park and ride bus from Alec Robins Road to free up parking along the State Highway,” Hamilton says. The local A & P Committee is expecting a record crowd of 4750 this year with the gates, manned by local scouts, cubs and keas, opening at 8am. Entry is $15 for adults, kids free.

Wānaka With just on an hour under the tyres, you’ll reach Wānaka, a once quieter version of Queenstown, encircled by alpine peaks that also reach for the sky. Not so anymore this now a bustling town, it’s even on McDonald’s radar to pen a new outlet there, but locals aren’t too keen. While Wānaka is smaller than Queenstown and generally there is a lot less hussle and bustle with easier parking, on the more popular hikes you might consider getting there early to get a park close by. Like Queenstown, Wānaka has an enormous range of activities that focus around the mountains and the lake. It also has some unique activities with trail riding, jet boating, parasailing and rock climbing particular favorites. On the lake front you’ll have easy access to swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, biking, jet boating rides and a number of lake cruise options to choose from.

There is also an exceptional list of more sedentary activities that will keep the whole family engrossed. 9km out of town at the Wānaka Airport you will find the renowned plane and car museum including the famous old Farmers Santa that was the centerpiece for decades of Auckland’s annual Santa parades. On the way drop into the Wānaka Lavender Farm which is just a few minutes drive out of town, to experience 20 acres of beautiful lavender fields, farm animals & display gardens. Enjoy a walk through the flowers and meet the farm animals. The on-site store features Lakes Honey and the many Wānaka Lavender Farm products all lovingly made on site. Just around the corner is Paddon’s Paddock which is a family run vineyard producing hand-picked wines, and a fabulous shabby chic tasting room and bar. The best bit however is enjoying a platter, a pizza and a

glass sitting in winery enjoying the sun. Fancy a spot of fishing? HOOK in Albert Town is your place to catch your very own salmon from Hook’s spring feed lake. The setting is so relaxing where you can wander around the property or sit out on the bean bags in the sun and relax while someone else does all the work in preparing, cooking and plating your freshly-caught salmon. Also, in Albert Town is a little bit of Paris with French based treats at Pembroke Pâtisserie where quality hand crafted French pastries, breads & cakes are created. Pembroke Pâtisserie was crowned New Zealand’s Best French Bakery at the 2023 French New Zealand Chamber of Commerce Business Awards in March. You can easily spend a whole day or even a week in Wānaka and still have not covered everything there is to do.

Best of the Queenstown Trails Queenstown is quickly becoming a world-renowned biking destination. There is riding to suit every ability and type of rider, from lakeside family-friendly trails to backcountry singletrack epics. If you love riding bikes, then you will love summer in Queenstown.

Queenstown Trails, founded in 2002, is on a mission to keep enhancing the world-class trail network in the Whakatipu Basin, for both locals and visitors. Queenstown Trails is proud to be transforming what it is like to live, work and play in the Whakatipu Basin, facilitating conservation initiatives and playing a vital role in working towards the regions carbon-zero goals.

With hundreds of kilometres of trails throughout the Whakatipu Basin, you’ll be able to find somewhere to ride within easy reach of your home or summer holiday accommodation. The interconnected nature of the Queenstown Trails Network means you can link up several trails, to make your biking adventure as leisurely or a long as your heart desires.

Queenstown Trails relies on the support of trail users and trail lovers to help fund the work we do. If everyone who uses the trails regularly, donates as little as $30/year, the future of the trails will be safe guarded. For more information about Queenstown Trails, the trail network and becoming a Trail Lover, please visit: www.queenstowntrails.org.nz

The expanding network also allows you to stitch together sections of the Queenstown Trail with more technical mountain biking tracks in order to tailor a ride to suit your taste and ability. The addition of backcountry trails expands the repertoire of cycling offerings, allowing the curation of day-long or multiday adventures.

Starting at Coronet Peak Station Road (park in the designated, signposted area) enjoy the gentle ascent up the Dan O’Connell Climb. The views are breath-taking, and it’s well worth a hydration stop to soak in the vistas of the Remarkables and Crown Range out over the Whakatipu basin. The water-race connector continues the climb, the trail looping back and forth through the tussocks, before emerging on Coronet Peak Road adjacent to the Skippers Saddle turn-off. From here are many, varied, and glorious mountain biking trails of Coronet Peak; this is also where the Morning Glory flow track begins. Built in collaboration with the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club, Morning Glory and Hot Rod boast some of the most beautifully built flow trails in the Whakatipu Basin. Morning Glory is super fun and flowy with great berms and rollable jumps. Turn left at the bottom of Morning Glory to link into the top of Hot Rod or take the option to continue on the Coronet Face Water Race to descend Bush Creek into Arrowtown. Hot Rod is an insanely fun intermediate Grade 3 flow trail you’ll ever ride with non-stop berms, and heaps of fun, safe jumps with epic views over Queenstown.

Further Coronet Loop Time: 4-8 hours Level: Grade 3 -4 (Intermediate – Advanced) (Option to by-pass Pack Track and Sack, the Grade 4 section) Distance: 50km The Coronet Loop is a backcountry mountain bike trail requiring moderate levels of skill and fitness. The ride takes the best part of a day and enjoys stunning landscapes, mountain views, creek crossings and is steeped in rich mining history. Be sure to carry plenty of food and water, as well as enough clothing and tools or spares you might need, the Coronet Loop is remote and not easily accessible other than by trail. The trail begins in Arrowtown at Butler’s Green, adjacent to the historic Chinese Settlement. Whilst the trail can be ridden in either direction, we think it rides best in a clockwise direction, so start by heading up Bush Creek, a great climbing track that passes through native Beech forest and towering schist bluffs. The loop trail offers stunning views across the Whakatipu Basin, visits waterfalls, old historic huts and even the remains of the Old Greengates Hotel. The Coronet Loop links sections of old pack track and passes mining ruins as it weaves between the bluffs. There are a set of steep stairs to climb with some narrow sections before the trail returns back to Butler’s Green in Arrowtown. Glenorchy Glenorchy is known as the ‘head of the lake’ and is the gateway to a magical outdoors experience surrounded by mountains and worldrenowned Paradise Valley. The area hosts a number of the countries iconic walking tracks, including the Routeburn, the Rees-Dart and GreenstoneCaples. Plan plenty of time visiting and take your time – Glenorchy has so much more to offer for the discerning outdoors connoisseur. Short walks The Lagoon Walkway is a boardwalk track which crosses wetlands with plenty of opportunity to view bird life. There are also views of Mt Earnslaw/Pikirakatahi and the surrounding ranges. The track is fun for a family and starts at the northern end of Glenorchy and only takes about an hour. It’s a great way to start the day before the morning coffee. Another well-defined track is the easy beech forested stroll into Lake Sylvan which can be done as a loop. The lake is home to brown trout and numerous small native fish. This walk is a hidden gem nestled in surrounding bush with good views of Mt Earnslaw’s Turret Head from the viewing platform. It’s a great morning walk as it only takes around 2 hours to complete and the birdsong is incredible. In summer, take your togs and have a swim in the lake or just enjoy the rich bird life. If you are lucky, you’ll see a mohua/yellowhead. Longer walks Take a half day and enjoy the start of the Routeburn. Drive or arrange to be dropped off to the trail head, which is approximately 15 minutes from Glenorchy and journey into the World Heritage area of the Mt Aspiring National Park and experience the peace and serenity of a forest created thousands of years ago and virtually untouched since the last ice age. Throughout the walk a variety of landscapes opens up: mountainous peaks; sheer rock faces; alpine basins; pristine lakes; cascading waterfalls; turquoise rivers and million dollar views around every corner. This walk is on a well signposted easy track which will take you through ancient beech forest beside an impressive river gorge which is dotted with breathtaking jadegreen pools. The area is a haven of native bird life - the bush robin, tui, bellbird and yellowhead. The Routeburn half day walk is a lovely short experience suitable for all fitness levels, and takes approximately 2 hours walking.

Explore Grab a picnic hamper and drive about 20min north of the village to Diamond Lake to the top end of Mt Alfred. The Middle Earth scenery here – it was a location in the The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies – is second to none. Getting There Easy 45 min Queenstown.

Stay – Kinloch Wilderness Retreat Across the lake from Glenorchy or 26km by road sits the Kinloch Wilderness Retreat. The retreat while 26km from Glenorchy is very handy to several popular walking tracks including the Routeburn Track. The hotel caters for all accommodation budgets with dining options to match. The Retreats history stretches back to the 1860’s and in 2000 John and Toni Glover took ownership and commenced restoring the retreat to reflect its former self. Today Kinlock Wilderness Retreat sleeps 50, catering for all kinds of guests, in a beautiful, peaceful setting at the head of the lake. There are four accommodation offerings ranging from eco cabins with its two passive ‘low energy’ cabins designed with locally sourced green building technology, through to the Heritage Lodge, perfect for those wanting the comfort of a home away from home. Luxury accommodation in the heart of Glenorchy includes The Lake House which is the whole house perfect for large groups or families while the Retreats Wilderness Rooms are ideal for independent travellers and are also pet friendly for those with furry friends. www.kinlochlodge.co.nz

On the water Depending on the weather and the lake conditions paddle across to Pigeon and Pig islands to explore the scenic reserves. Around town Take the Glenorchy Heritage trail, opened to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the settlement of the district. With a small map you can see the refurbished library, visit the museum or just get some inspiration from the local shops and art galleries. 22

Beginning and end of your Glenorchy journey A trip to Glenorchy might be for a number of reasons – to go for a walk, visit Paradise, a spot of fishing, jetboating, hike a mountain or take in outstanding views and Instagramworthy shots of the famous jetty and ‘red shed’. Known as the gateway to some of New Zealand’s most scenic spots, Glenorchy attracts a diverse range of visitors eager to experience its splendour. But regardless of the hikes, views, movie tours, or adventures at the top of the lake, nearly all find themselves coming through the doors of Mrs Woolly’s, the beating heart of this rural township.

Tastebuds start tingling when you walk through the door and spot a food cabinet bursting at the seams with mouthwatering food ranging from homemade pies to tasty freshly picked salads courtesy of an outstanding veggie garden to the rear of the property. Pastries and cakes are baked daily, the coffee’s divine, and a Glenorchy ‘must-do’ is the aptly-named Full Monty, homemade gelato ice cream topped with raspberries and dark chocolate chips, piled high in a crispy waffle cup.

exclusive range of locally-crafted jewellery and ceramics, all treasures found nowhere else in New Zealand. The rear of Mrs Woolly’s has expanded into a full art gallery showcasing the talents of local artists, and there’s a rustic covered seating area for days when the weather’s inclement, or to shelter from the sun. Pop out the back of the store and discover an enchanting Secret Garden with comfortable seating dotted around a paved courtyard that’s brimming with colour and history. Visitors will be delighted to know they can feel good about purchases too. All profits from sales benefit the Glenorchy Community Trust which works to improve the lives and livelihoods of its neighbours by supporting projects focusing on sustainability, education, health, arts and culture.

Describing it as a general store doesn’t really do it justice. It’s an everything store, a wee gem where the more you look, the longer you linger.

There’s a selection of foodstuffs suitable for everyone from trampers and campers to artisan dishes or confections, such as our famous home-made granola or a flavourpacked marmalade made by the kitchen team. Merino wool knit blankets are perfect as a take home memento, along with an

Adventure awaits in Glenorchy

New Zealand’s top architects agreed recently with the Great Glenorchy Alpine Base Camp taking home the Sir Miles Warren Award for Commercial Architecture and an award in the hospitality category at the 2023 New Zealand Architecture Awards last month. Judges said while many global tourist destinations are suffering from being overrun by huge visitor numbers, the “slow tourism of The Great Glenorchy Alpine Base Camp suggests a softer touch”. “The experiences here for tourists are not offering hospitality with a high demand in terms of energy and resource use. The low-impact buildings and site services offer delightfully simple sleeping huts rather than a high-end hotel, something which suggests visitors who book an experience here are much more in tune with the spirit of the place.” The project team of Richard Naish, Mitchell Round, Adam Dwen, Anne Thiermann and Jessica Barter were also praised for delivering appropriate architecture for a property that sits on the doorstep of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Nestled away at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu is a beautiful adventure camp. Inspired by the historic mountaineer’s huts of years past and surrounded by stunning sights, The Great Glenorchy Alpine Base Camp opened their doors in December of 2022 and have many great adventures to offer.

“On one end, it’s one guide per guest and at the other end, it’s one per six. Our median at the moment would be one per four guests. Everything we do is off track – we don’t go on to any of the tracks and we’re a small group operator. If there’s any growing sign of our work in a particular area, then we stop working there and go somewhere else.

The environmentally-conscious company is based in a UNESCO World Heritage area and the site offers a range of experiences and huts of varying sizes. Owners Liz and Doug Rikard-Bell are focused on creating and curating transformative all-inclusive guided wilderness experience packages. Aimed at those wanting to reconnect with the wild and try something different, the camp has been overwhelmed with the response since opening their doors.

“We’re a real soft-footprint or no trace operator in the World Heritage Area. We make sure we have, at one end of the spectrum, guided summit attempts, and at the other end of the spectrum, we’re terribly family friendly and everything in between.”

“We’ve had an incredible response from people who have just found us – we don’t have a single agent and we don’t have sales people,” says Doug. “We don’t have a marketing person, just every now and again one of us might do a little bit on social media, and we’re getting enquiries every day and we’re running experiences often. Already in our short life, we’ve had returns – for all the forward bookings, something like three quarters of them are people coming back again. So for us, it’s encouraging.” The camp currently offers up 11 different adventures that cover a range of interests and landscapes. Some involve helicopters, others involve snow camping, there’s a backcountry experience for women to help improve their confidence in offtrack mountain movement, and skiing/ snowboarding trips. The number of guides per adventure really depends on how challenging the adventure is.

Lakes Weekly Bulletin

For locals and visitors looking for a break within their ski break, the camp’s licensed wood-fire restaurant, Food Over Fire, is a great spot to pop by for a bite. Doug describes it as like having dinner at their place, “You can have whatever you like to eat, just as long as it’s what we’re serving.” Everything is cooked over fire and served in cast iron on a beautifully-set long table. If you’re spending the night, you’ll discover plenty of social areas including a sauna, as well as the quaint cabins to rest your head. Each has been built with the upmost care, containing a wood burner, light dimmers, and Bluetooth speakers. The cabin sizes have been considered, too, with a range of different configurations to suit a number of different group types. “We are also environmentalists. Our contribution to the worldly woes includes our low tech, low energy, slower wild nature engagement offering. Connections and reconnections. Spending time in the ecosystem that is our home. Matchmaking lovers to our wild domain for a regenerative legacy,” says Doug.

24

“Fourteen simple, gable-roofed sleeping huts and adjacent communal spaces are built from mainly locally sourced materials and have a low embodied and operational energy footprint. Inspired clients, together with the architects, interior architects and builders, have not only created a true fit to place, but offer the best pre- and postexperiences for visitors engaging with this powerful landscape.” The Great Glenorchy Alpine Base Camp awaits! If you’d like more information on the adventures on offer or the accommodation options, head to thegreatglenorchyalpinebasecamp.co.nz. The website will soon take bookings for the restaurant, but in the meantime, you can head to the contact us page to book in.
