Happy New Year! As you read this, we’re already into the last week of January - a reminder that time continues to march on; honing the focus to get things done in what will be the final year in this triennium.
At Council, we’re currently working on submitting our pitch for a regional deal and moving forward with the government’s Local Water Done Well reforms.
Regional Deals are framed around the need for a 30-year vision, with negotiated 10-year plans, while delivering on shared objectives between central and local government. There are multiple examples of these deals across Britain and Australia, each tailored to their local context. The priority objectives being pursued by our government are to build economic growth, deliver connected and resilient infrastructure, and improve supply of affordable, quality housing. Objectives we would all agree are critical for our Lakes District community to thrive.
In December, Council submitted a registration of interest for a regional deal in collaboration with Central Otago District Council and Otago Regional Council, with the final proposal due by the end of February. We are developing the proposal around some common themes; transforming the transport system, securing our energy needs for the future, developing innovative approaches to the health system, building an international investment gateway into New Zealand, delivering high-quality education and professional development, increasing the value of tourism, increasing productivity through economic resilience, all while sharing the value created by growth. There’s plenty on the plate, but these goals are interconnected to deliver on the priority objectives.
Local Water Done Well is a significant government reform that will change how drinking, waste, and stormwater are managed and provided for. There will be higher levels of financial scrutiny, economic regulation and a more defined role on public health and environmental standards. Options for the model of delivery will be presented to the community in the near future. One thing I am certain of is that the way we pay for water will change; this is a result of the reform.
All of this is occurring while the Shotover Treatment Plant is generating some media attention. We’ve been issued with an enforcement order and the matter is now before the Court. Both parties are progressing the issue and the focus now is finding a long-lasting solution.
We have less than a year left of this Council triennium. I will be standing again for the mayoralty. It will be a six-year commitment to serve the community, if privileged to do so. I firmly believe our district holds immense potential and the next three years are critical to grasp it. It will take courage and being bold in vision, and that’s what keeps me driven to deliver.

It has been another sensational week for Queenstown Lakes skiers and snowboarders.
It was double gold for Wānaka at the X Games with Luca Harrington winning the men’s ski slopestyle on his debut and Zoi Sadowski-Synnott taking her sixth X Games gold in the snowboard slopestyle, while making history by landing the world’s first triple cork in competition.
Meanwhile, Queenstown’s ski star Alice Robinson claimed the fourth World Cup victory of her career, taking the win at the Kronplatz FIS Giant Slalom World Cup, in Italy.
Harrington then incredibly followed up his gold with silver in the X Games Ski Big Air, while X Games rookie Rocco Jamieson won bronze in the men’s Snowboard Big Air, with Sadowski-Synnott also taking bronze in the women’s comp. And Wānaka-based five-time Winter Paralympian Adam Hall secured his second World Cup podium of the season, finishing second in the FIS Para Alpine Slalom World Cup in Germany.
Harrington could scarcely believe his X Games gold, given the 20-year-old was initially on course training an alternate at Aspen Snowmass.
“I was not sure it was going to happen, then last night after my big air training I got the email saying I was in. I was super excited and had a hard time sleeping, I was buzzing in my bed. Today was incredible I am so grateful I got to sneak onto the start list.”
He delivered a flawless first run, including his right double corked 900 bring back Japan grab and switch right triple corked 1620 with an esco grab on the last two jumps.
Snowboard powerhouse Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, 23, returned from injury to top the podium, with an incredible run, including a huge backside triple corked 1440 on the third and final jump, making history as the first woman (ski or snowboard) to ever land a triple cork in a slopestyle competition.
“Being able to do that run, which is a dream run of mine I never thought was possible, it means the world to me to be back here at X Games,” she says.
Robinson, also 23, last stood on top of a World Cup podium in Lenzerheide in March 2021, and she was absolutely ecstatic to be back on top at one of her favourite race venues.
Snowboarders and skiers best in the world
“I am really quite speechless…it’s been four years since I last won and there were definitely some times in those four years where I wasn’t sure if I was going to win again, to be back winning here is so special. I’m just proud, the second run I just really wanted to be brave and ski on the limit and I am really proud of that.”
But it’s also a bittersweet week for Queenstown Lakes’ snowsports scene, with the news the NZ Winter Games has been canned after 15 years due to escalating costs.
Winter Games chief executive Marty Toomey said it marked the “end of an era” but the legacy will live on.

Is there something in the water…?
Lake Wakatipu’s water is now under the spotlight with a recent report showing a drop in quality from ‘excellent’ to ‘high’, amid concerns untreated sewage could be seeping into the lake.
While Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is under the gun about discharge from its Shotover Waste Water Treatment into the Kawarau River downstream from the lake, the water in the lake itself is potentially being degraded from ‘cross connections’.
That’s when plumbers and contractors unwittingly connect pipes from new developments into the storm water system, rather than the council’s sewage system.
There’s also concern from local business leaders about how problems with water quality in the lake are communicated, with alarming pollution warning signs put up around New Year, turning out to only be precautionary.
Otago Regional councillor Alexa Forbes says she’s had reports about cross connections.
“This is not the only cause of degradation but is one that should not be happening,” she says. “It’s a very expensive and difficult problem to fix once you start to have any degradation in the lake, especially as it’s so deep and can absorb so much trouble before it shows.
“The lake is our greatest asset and needs a lot more care and attention.”
A NIWA report presented to a December 2024 ORC committee meeting showed a slight drop in water quality in both Lakes Wakatipu and Wānaka.
A QLDC spokesperson says cross connections are rare, but do occur occasionally and are rectified as
by Sue Fea
soon as the problem is discovered. Fixing the issue is paid for by the homeowners.
Otago Regional Council regularly tests water quality, including E.coli levels, at popular local swimming spots, posting the results on the LAWA website (Land Air Water Aotearoa – lawa.org.nz), and notifying QLDC.
So there was a good deal of concern among locals and visitors when a ‘Temporary Health Warning’ sign was erected in Frankton just after New Year, stating that ‘this waterbody is polluted’, and not to swim or collect food.
Frankton Road five-star hotelier Mark Rose, of The Rees, says he contacted both councils after upset American guests had noticed the warning not to enter our supposed pristine waters.
“Naturally our guests come here to enjoy our clean, clear waters so it was of grave concern when we hadn’t been notified at all and there was nothing displayed on the LAWA website,” Rose says.
He spent some time trying to establish if there were heightened E. coli levels in the lake in the area, and what had happened.
The QLDC spokesperson says the signs were put up as a precaution while work was carried out by contractors on a private property. Council was made aware of the work, and followed its normal process, also informing ORC.
But despite the signs, “there were no significant E. coli levels in Frankton Bay”, the QLDC spokesperson says.
That’s confirmed by ORC’s scientist, water quality Helen Trotter, who says there have been “no
exceedances recorded at ORC’s monitored sites”. ORC staff did receive some public enquiries about the warning signs along Frankton Track, directing further enquiries back to QLDC.
Rose says he wants to see better communication between the parties involved if contractors are going to be erecting council signage like that.
“We need to be made aware of situations like this on our waterfronts so that we can enable guests to be aware and mitigate any concerns,” Rose says.
“That was disastrous. Our guests swim off our wharf there all the time. We’ve got to fix these issues as this whole sewerage treatment thing at Lower Shotover is a blight on our reputation.”
Waste water plant problems go to Environment Court
Queenstown’s failing disposal field at Shotover Waste Water Treatment Plant is now in the hands of the Environment Court.
Following a year-long investigation, the Otago Regional Council has pushed the button and is seeking an Enforcement Order from the court against Queenstown Lakes District Council.
The disposal field is designed to allow treated water from the waste water plant to soak into the ground prior to entering groundwater and ultimately the Kawarau River.
But it has been plagued by problems, resulting in persistent ponding and spillover.
That means QLDC, which owns and operates the plant, is not complying with consents issued by ORC, which is responsible for freshwater regulation.
ORC has issued two abatement notices in the past year and 10 infringements, but is now seeking stronger enforcement, although it is not seeking prosecution over the problems.
ORC’s Chief Executive Richard Saunders says that recent tests of the discharge show a high level of treatment indicating that there would be no adverse effect on water quality in the river.
“While tests have shown the discharges to be highly treated, we want QLDC to be compliant with its consent. It’s up to the Environment Court to determine a decision on compliance,” he says.
QLDC issued a media statement last week saying: “While Council respects this land contact for the important cultural function it plays, it isn’t relied on as part of the treatment process.”

CRIMELINE
Arresting officer cops it
A Police officer was allegedly placed in a headlock at the Gibbston concert by one of two aggressive Canterbury males, who jumped on his back while he was arresting a female in their group for throwing hot chips at him.
Constable Amanda Shute says Police were alerted to two aggressive males being removed from the concert just before 4pm on Saturday, 18 January, after being refused alcohol service. Two further female family members were also removed a short time later, one allegedly throwing the hot chips at the officer while being escorted.
During the arrest of the female one of the males allegedly jumped on the back of the Police officer and placed him in a headlock, Shute says. One of the other females then became involved causing all involved to fall to the ground.
A 26-year-old man and two females, aged 22 and 24, were arrested and charged with assaulting Police. They appeared in the Queenstown District Court on 20 January and have been remanded on bail until 4 April.
Vicious unprovoked downtown assault
A 39-year-old local man was charged with injuring with intent to injure and resisting Police after an alleged unprovoked assault on a member of the public in Queenstown Mall at 12.20am on Friday, 17 January.
Shute says the man allegedly verbally abused Police and refused to follow Police instruction, physically pulling and pushing away from officers who were placing him under arrest. The victim sustained a split lip which required stitches, and two teeth were loosened.
The man was remanded in custody when he appeared in the Queenstown District Court on Friday, 17 January, and will reappear in court on 10 February.
Vehicles broken into at Frankton Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen anything suspicious after three vehicles were broken into in Riverside Road, Frankton, around 3am to 3.30am on Friday, 17 January. Shute says the back rear windows of the vehicles were smashed in and there were signs that a driver’s door handle had been tampered with. Nothing was taken from the vehicles.
Mountain biker takes big fall
Emergency services have noticed an increase in mountain biking accidents with more people seemingly getting out enjoying local trails and bike parks this summer. Queenstown Volunteer firefighters were called in to assist after a young male mountain biker took a big drop of some distance off the Tiki Trail on Skyline Hill around 2.30pm on Monday, 20 January.
Fire and Emergency Otago Lakes Group assistant commander Nic McQuillan says four firefighters assisted with a Stokes basket (special stretcher) to bring the man down to a waiting St John Ambulance. A St John spokesperson says one ambulance and one helicopter responded and the patient was airlifted to Lakes District Hospital with minor injuries.
Heli-rescues
Emergency services and the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter have been kept busy this past week with some nine other local callouts to the region, including a rescue off the Dart-Rees Track, north of Glenorchy on Saturday, 18 January. A spokesman for Maritime NZ’s Rescue Coordination Centre says they received a personal locator beacon alert from a party of four on the track with a Queenstown helicopter dispatched to assist. One patient with minor injuries and their parent were flown to Lakes District Hospital for further treatment.
A St John spokesperson says a helicopter also transported a patient (no condition available) after an incident near Mount Earnslaw at 2.45pm on Tuesday, 21 January. A patient was also airlifted to Lakes District Hospital after another incident near Mount Earnslaw at 12.51pm the day before (20 January). No condition was available. Rescue helicopters also responded to accidents in Arrowtown, Coronet Peak and Queenstown last week.

An investigation is underway after the death of a woman at a Queenstown Hill property on Saturday, 25 January. Emergency services were called to the Windsor Place property, on Queenstown hill, about 2.30pm. “Police are now working to establish the full circumstances of how she died,” a police spokesperson says. “Her death is currently being treated as unexplained. As part of our enquiries, Police would like to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity of Windsor Place between 8am and 3pm and who might have information that would assist.” There were no other details available as the Lakes Weekly Bulletin went to press. Frankton overnight roadworks
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is reconstructing the Tucker Beach Road intersection near the Shotover River. The SH6 milling and asphalting will be completed out at night over a fortnight through to Thursday, 6 February, 8pm to 6am, to minimise daytime delays and disruptions. Motorists are asked to take care around crews and factor in up to 10 minutes for the Stop/Go operations. Soon after work will start on the Humphrey St intersection, near the Kawarau Falls Bridge, from Sunday, 9 February, to Friday, 21 February also overnight – 8pm to 6am. “Given the residential housing in this area, crews will be doing their best to reduce any vibrations or noise,” Peter Standring, Maintenance Contract Manager for NZTA in Central Otago, says. “The road pavement in this area has now reached the end of its serviceable life and given the increasing traffic volumes on this section of SH6, the new pavement mix will be stronger than the existing material.” At both sites, crews will be working Sunday – Thursday nights with Friday and Saturday nights off. Work is weather dependent so if it rains, it will be pushed out for that night. SH6 Frankton-Ladies Mile Highway will be closed 10pm – 5.30am this week, between Grant Road and the Frankton Roundabout.
$2 million prize pool
The New Zealand Open has confirmed that a $2 million prize pool will be up for grabs when the tournament tees off in Queenstown next month. “This reflects not only our commitment to being a financially attractive tournament across our tour partners, the PGA Tour of Australasia, the Asian Tour, the Japan Golf Tour and the Korean Tour but also our dedication to the longterm future of the event,” Tournament Chairman John Hart says. Players who make the cut will contest a two-round final on a new composite course layout. Tournament Director Michael Glading says this modified layout is aimed to engage on-course spectators who attend the event making more of the course accessible and engaging, and also reduce playing time, “meaning those watching on Sky Sport will be able to see more players in action within the broadcast window”. Sky Sport is major sponsor. The 104th New Zealand Open will tee off at Millbrook Resort in Queenstown next month between 27 February and 2 March 2025.

Queenstown Trails Update
by Mark Williams
Over the past decade, Queenstown has become a global cycling mecca! Bursting with hundreds of kilometres of trails nestled amongst the mountains and lakes of the Whakatipu, Queenstown boasts an incredible offering of gravel cycleways and commuter routes, mountain biking trails and backcountry singletrack – something to suit every level, age and style.
The Queenstown Trail is one of the Ngā Haerenga Great Rides of New Zealand. The 150km network of trails explores the mountains, lakes and rivers, linking the communities of the Whakatipu with plenty of opportunity to sample the incredible cafes, breweries and vineyards of the region.
Conservation Initiatives
Alongside connecting communities and providing a world-class offering for the bike tourism industry, Queenstown Trails is proud to facilitate conservation and preservation of the natural heritage of the Whakatipu. The Queenstown Trails provide access for predator trapping, wilding control, and restoration planting. It’s incredible to enable the work of Southern Lakes Sanctuary, Whakatipu Wildlife Trust and the Whakatipu Reforestation Trust, and to see the benefits of trapping and planting alongside the trails. In conjunction with conservation efforts, the trails offer alternative active transport options reducing vehicle emissions, easing congestion and enhancing health and wellbeing as the region works towards the Destination Queenstown goal of Carbon Zero 2030.
Wharehuanui Trail
The Wharehuanui Trail opened in October 2024, and has been amazingly well received, with rave reviews and high numbers of people out enjoying the new trail between Arrowtown and Arthurs Point. The Wharehuanui Trail also creates a valuable link to the mountain bike trail network on the front face of Coronet Peak and the backcountry trails of the Mahu Whenua, including the Coronet Loop.
Shipping Containers for Sale and Lease plus Storage Options
Shotover Gorge Trail
The latest edition to the Queenstown Trail network is an exciting new trail between Arthurs Point and Tucker Beach, following the Shotover/Kimi-ākau Gorge and linking Arthurs Point to the wider trail network. The Trail includes the new Kimi-ākau suspension bridge at Tucker Beach and also passes through the spectacular Hugo Tunnel at Big Beach. The Shotover Gorge Trail is set to open in March 2025, and will be a spectacular addition to the Queenstown Trails offering.
Connectivity
Alongside the evolution of the Queenstown Trails, the wider Central Otago network is growing and increasing connectivity throughout the region. To the west, plans are underway to provide a trail to Seven Mile and beyond that to link Queenstown to Glenorchy. To the east, the highly anticipated Kawarau Gorge trail is well underway and projected to open at the end of 2025. Further afield new trails linking Cromwell to Wānaka, and completion of the trails between Alexandra and Waihola mean that in the coming years you will be able to ride from Queenstown all the way to Dunedin on off-road trails.
Queenstown Trails is a not-for-profit charitable organisation that relies on the support of donations from anyone who uses and enjoys the trail network. Providing a trail close to home for everyone in Queenstown and creating awesome experiences to support the tourism industry and assist with the connectivity of the region is building a legacy for future generations of residents and visitors to enjoy.
The team are busier than ever constructing new trails as well as working on a host of exciting plans for enhancing and expanding the trails on offer around the Whakatipu. For more information about Queenstown Trails, the trail network and donating, please visit: www.queenstowntrails.org.nz

The busy summer season is here! For Queenstown, that has always meant many new visitors coming to town to enjoy the long days and outdoor activities. Also, it means many workers looking for summer jobs and, with that, looking for accommodation too. Queenstown’s accommodation is stretched thin at the best of times, but it becomes especially pronounced during peak season. With the constant turnover and high demand, it is important to understand your rights as a renter or landlord. This can make renting in our beautiful town as smooth as possible and hopefully avoid any problems down the line!
When renting a room in Queenstown, you are either going to be considered a tenant, flatmate, or a boarder. A tenant rents a property from a landlord that does not live in the same property, and they have a written tenancy agreement signed by both tenant and landlord. As a tenant, you have rights under the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) and both you and the landlord have rights and obligations to the property. A flatmate is not named on the agreement but still shares a house or apartment with others, and contributes to the rent, utilities, and chores. As a flatmate, you do not have rights and obligations to the property under the RTA. A boarder is some living in a property not qualifying as a tenant or flatmate. In Queenstown, this would generally be student accommodation or volunteer home stays. Boarders are also not covered by the RTA.
In all types of rental situations, it is best to have a written and signed agreement, so the renter and their landlord have evidence of what they have agreed to. This is especially helpful in resolving disputes that may arise in a renting situation. Most commonly, disputes could be from the overdue payments, reimbursement of bond money, or breaches of the renting agreement. If a dispute does arise, it is always best to speak with the landlord or tenant first to resolve it informally. If an agreement cannot be reached, both parties can enter mediation or reach an agreement in a Tribunal hearing.
This all may seem daunting, but CAB is available to discuss any questions you have about renting and to help you navigate the housing process in Queenstown. Come see us in the o ice, send us an email, or give us a phone call!
Happy summer and happy renting!

It will all kick off on 29 March with the much-loved free Community Whānau Day. It includes an early bird lake plunge followed by a full day of entertainment and creativity at Wānaka’s Dinosaur Park and lakefront. Highlights include interactive installations, workshops, a range of cultural food stalls, live performances, roaming characters and aerial acts. The evening wraps up with an open mic night at the Crystal Palace presented by Creative Juices.
“We’re thrilled to be presenting a fabulous line up of incredible performances and events for the whole community to enjoy,” artistic director Sophie Kelly says. “This year's programme delves into themes of identity, belonging and self-expression, inviting our audiences to explore diverse perspectives and personal narratives. We honour the richness of cultural diversity with works that celebrate various ethnicities, languages, religions as well as our own rich cultural history. We celebrate the unique heritage of Wānaka and its region, drawing inspiration and stories from local legends, history, traditions and rituals. I encourage you to not just observe but to participate, connect with an open heart and mind, and embrace the opportunity to be transformed.”
One of the most popular parts of the festival is its involvement with local schools. Ensuring that rangatahi also have the opportunity to explore music, theatre, comedy and self-expression through hands-on workshops and performances is an important aspect. There’s a strong focus on engaging the community and in addition to ticketed events there will be a number of free events running during the day and into the night.
Some of the artists involved in the festival this year include award-winning Canadian circus with their latest show ANIMAL, where a gentleman farmer has surrounded himself with sine familiar but slightly outlandish creatures. Circus, song, dance and theatre come together to show off some breathtaking acrobatics and to push the boundaries of what you think of when you hear circus. There’s also the sensational cabaret, An Evening Without Kate Bush, which pays tribute to the music, fans and mythology of one of the most influential voices in pop music.
For those who enjoy chamber music, there’s Chamber Music New Zealand’s Reimagining Mozart, while Upu is an electrifying theatrical celebration of Māori and Pasifika literature curated by award-winning poet Grace IwashitaTaylor, bringing the powerful voices of Oceania to life. Be Like Billy? celebrates the show-band legacy through theatre and cabaret as Rutene Spooner shares his personal relationship with his childhood hero and the greatest Māori showman of our history. There’s magicians, a comedy deep dive into Kiwi cookbooks, a moving love story exploring Alzheimers and the power of music, storytelling and, really, something for just about everyone –the full programme promising to engage and enthral.
In the off years of the festival, Aspiring Conversations is held. It first featured as part of the festival in 2023, when it couldn’t go ahead due to Covid. It was such a hit that it’s returning this year, offering up discussions from a range of identities. Respected writers, musicians, professors, and journalists join the line-up, including acclaimed author and bookseller Ruth Shaw, launching her new memoir, Anne Salmond, Mike McRoberts, Susan Devoy, and the legendary Kiwi comedy duo Jools and Lynda Topp.
“This year’s theme of embracing the extraordinary and trying something new ties perfectly with our gifted name from Kāi Tahu, Te Kaupeka Rau, which reflects seasonal changes and the idea of turning over a new leaf,” executive director Ruth Heath says. “Once again, we have something for everyone to connect and engage with - an opportunity to find joy and surprise in discovering something new alongside friends and whanau,” Kelly says.
The full programme containing over 60 events for Wānaka Festival of Colour is available to check out now at festivalofcolour.co.nz with tickets on sale from this Friday, 31 January, at 8am.

BRUCE DOUGLAS
The roots go deep
A great, great nephew of one of Queenstown’s fi rst two doctors, his mother also one of the Wakatipu’s renowned Dagg farming family, Bruce Douglas was born to work the land.
Destined for a career in agricultural science, his two elder brothers initially farming the family’s Cave Farm at Slopehill with Dad, circumstances changed after Bruce’s dad had his fourth hip replacement. Lincoln College graduate Bruce happily stepped into that role.
Mustering on the likes of Mount Soho for Roger Monk followed until in 1978 he scored the manager’s role at the vast, 16,000ha Cecil Peak station, only 22. “My mate Tony Strain and I went over to do a week’s work and I ended up staying 12 years,” he grins.
Big money came in and bought the station in the mid-80s as the next-door playground and sewerage ponds site for a planned, grandiose Canadian Pacifi c Hotel and championship golf course at neighbouring Walter Peak. Unfortunately, hefty BNZ borrowings right on the cusp of the 1987 share market crash saw the developers go into receivership. “The shepherd and I were working in the yards when a water taxi came over carrying two guys in suits. One was their head accountant who I’d gone through Otago Boys High with. “I said, ‘This doesn’t look good.”
It wasn’t, but Bruce got paid and soon landed a manager’s role up the lake at Mount Creighton Station, barges no longer necessary to load sheep and wool.
“The fi rst 10 to 15 years I did a lot of snow raking (using helicopters) as we had no fences to keep the sheep in.”
Gradually Glenorchy Road was sealed and wife Meryn, who’d managed three kids on Correspondence School on both stations, was able to hand over to the school bus.
Fortunately, Meryn also came from a well-known high-country farming family, the daughter of Routeburn Station’s Wattie Watson. It was just as well she was resilient. A strong rugby player, Bruce’s Wakatipu Seniors team had snatched the greatly prized White Horse Cup off Cromwell the week before their wedding in July. They were defending against Upper Clutha on Bruce and Meryn’s wedding day. “There were only women left at the wedding as 90% of the men had gone down to the Rec Ground to watch the fi nal,” he grins. Groom Bruce abstained but was there on the sideline with his bride and her enthusiastic father who raced the sideline in his suit yelling and cheering. They lost but back to the wedding they all went to celebrate anyway, Bruce making up for it with a honeymoon in New Caledonia. Fortunately, Bruce’s three uncles, Bill, Jack and Ronnie Dagg made it. They’d all miraculously walked away after a light plane crash over Mount Soho in 1968. The pilot had turned back into the hill during bad weather. “Only the pilot got injured. Somebody gave him a broken nose,” Bruce quips. “I remember being at Arrowtown School and hearing there’d been a plane crash.”
My Life Story
Bruce’s great, great uncle Dr James Douglas built the fi rst Queenstown Hospital at Frankton, Douglas Street named after him. “Not many have been here longer than us,” he says. His grandmother Rose Douglas (Rose Douglas Park) was headmistress at Arrowtown School.
Rugby in winter, eventually playing for Vincent, and making hay for Dad in summer, Bruce was using a 22 to shoot rabbits from age nine. “Just when we were old enough to hold the rifl e.”
He wasn’t such a dab hand with fi re safety though. He, his younger brother and neighbour Tony Strain set the tree hut on fi re when they were smoking in it while his parents were at golf. “Mum and Dad came over the cattlestop and saw the glow. We got a good telling off!”
Pony Club treks meant riding through Queenstown’s main street to Mount Creighton’s old shearers’ quarters for camps, instructor Pip Robins out front leading the parade of 15 through town.
Otago Boys for the sixth and seventh form was a culture shock. Bruce then settling into Lincoln social life for four years, playing for the First XV. His almost 50 years farming has had its challenges, including no fences and a dilapidated woolshed initially on the rundown Cecil Peak Station. “We’d spent all day bringing sheep back through the Lochy River valley only to discover the fence ended high on the rocky outcrops, the sheep making their way back again at night.” On another occasion the sheep knocked the walls out of the woolshed at night, several hundred escaping. But Bruce is a dab hand at dog trialling – a top South Island judge and life member serving decades on the Otago Dog Trial Association and Wakatipu Collie Dog Trialling Club. He’s also a life member of the Lake Hayes A & P Association and Lakeside Rugby Club which runs the annual Glenorchy Races, Bruce at the helm for years with other key organisers.
“I just love farming. I enjoy working with stock and I love being my own boss.”
