It’s that time of year again. Time to dust off the decorations, break out the Mariah, and take your life in your hands as you try to navigate Queenstown’s crazy Christmas holiday roads.
From now to pretty much mid-February, the danger dial is turned up to 11. Obviously, there are the tourists. Thousands of them, packed into increasingly massive rental SUVs, like tanks, speeding along at 120kmh some of them, the drivers woefully unfamiliar with New Zealand roads, overtaking coach-loads of other tourists, circling roundabouts while reading the satnav, treating indicators as an optional extra. Then there’s us. The locals. Irritated, impatient, hot, distracted, arrogant. It’s early December and Kmart car park has already gone a bit Mad Max. Sketchy. No one is giving way. We both reverse out of our spots at the same time and whoever gives way is chicken.
And then, with all this, you add alcohol into the mix. If you read Crimeline on p6 this week, you’ll see a local man was stopped by police last Monday with an alleged breath alcohol level of 1981mcgs - almost eight times the legal limit of 250mcg. And this was at 3.30pm, just as school kids were walking home. I won’t speculate too much on this, as he’s due to appear in court, but in my 12 years or so working as a reporter in Queenstown, including covering the courts, that’s the highest level I can remember. He undoubtedly has some problems if that alcohol reading is correct, but that’s no excuse, and he’s not alone. Every week there are around half a dozen Queenstowners who are either ticketed for drink driving or taken to court and banned. It has been a problem for years and it’s not getting any better. When Queenstown District Court holds its first session in January, there will likely be dozens of red-faced locals of all ages lining up to go before the judge.
The police are pretty coy about how many drinks you can have and be under the limit. That’s because it’s based on bodyweight, how much food you’ve eaten, alcohol percentages, and other factors. And it’s also because they don’t want you to drink and drive at all. They scrape people off the roads, so you can understand why. It seems bizarre really, when you think about it, that we need to have a drink at all when we’re driving. I’ve always seen one beer, perhaps two, as the socially acceptable drink-drive limit, but why have any? Is it just about feeling socially awkward?
Even without alcohol as a factor, there are car crashes every week in Queenstown Lakes, and there have been three people killed already locally this year. At the best of times, you need your head on a swivel to keep safe. So perhaps this summer, we can just think, ‘actually, I don’t need a beer, I’m driving so I’ll just have a soft drink’.

Technology Queenstown appoints first boss
Technology Queenstown has appointed Sarah Russell as its inaugural chief executive officer.
Russell brings a wealth of experience and strategic leadership to the organisation tasked with building a robust technology sector for Queenstown Lakes, says Chair Roger Sharp.
After an international career in banking, in 2017 she cofounded Sydney-based AI software company Elula with its products now used by some of Australia’s largest banks to deliver better customer experiences.
Originally from Christchurch, Sarah holds a Master of Commerce degree in Economics from the University of Canterbury.
“I’m thrilled to be leading Technology Queenstown and to foster the growth of a vibrant technology ecosystem in the region,” Russell says.
“The progress TQ has made since its launch on 31 January this year, including the support of its corporate partners to get it off the ground, has been phenomenal.”
More than 200 applicants applied for the role.
Russell and her family will relocate from Sydney to Queenstown in January 2025 in time to begin in the CEO role on 28 January.

The good and the bad
While efforts continue to diversify Queenstown Lakes economy, conditions for those employed in its main sectors appear to be improving.
A survey of tourism and hospo workers, commissioned by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, shows there are better training opportunities, higher job satisfaction and fewer workers looking for alternative career paths.
But there’s still work to do in many areas, particularly pay, according to the survey, led by Dr David Williamson from the Auckland University of Technology.
Just over half of all respondents (across New Zealand) reported earning less than the Living Wage, and this increased to 72% for frontline workers.
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Matt Doocey has welcomed the data release, which was a follow-up to a landmark 2022 study.
“Two of my key priorities include supporting the people who make up the tourism and hospitality workforce and growing the value of international tourism. In order to grow New Zealand’s international tourism we need a stronger workforce,” Doocey says.
“It was particularly great to read most respondents reported good training opportunities at work and the percentage of respondents that indicated they intend to leave the hospitality and tourism sector dramatically reduced.
“I was also pleased to see 91% of respondents are focused on being productive in their jobs and 90% feel they have the skills to do their jobs with confidence.
“However, clearly there is room for improvement with the results showing job satisfaction is low and the levels of bullying and harassment in the workforce have not improved.”
Overall job satisfaction increased from 62.2% in 2022 to 67.5% in 2024.

What a show!
Queenstown’s annual Christmas extravaganza wowed packed out audiences at the Events Centre on Sunday, across two performances.
A cast of 16 actors and 11 dancers, all aged between 9 and 14, took to the stage for A World of Christmas, which explored the Christmas traditions of different cultures and countries.
Directed by Tiffany Bindon, choreographed by Anna Stuart, and with Sofia Taquet as musical director, the story followed Yule Cat, played by Scarlett Hamilton, 14, and the Yule Crew, as they journeyed around the globe.
There were also performances from Queenstown Gymnastics Club, Silk and Circus, the Wakatipu Conservatoire of Classical Ballet, and, of course, the ever-popular The Remarkable Men’s Ballet. And Santa himself even found time out of his busy schedule to drop in.
“It’s a privilege to have so many of our local performers and groups in our sold out 18th annual Christmas Show,” producer, costume co-ordinator and QLDC events manager Jan Maxwell says.
“It’s always a special time of year for families, so from all of us here, Merry Christmas.”
The show, presented by Queenstown Lakes District Council, is a fundraiser for the Salvation Army Queenstown and has raised thousands of dollars through ticket sales and donation buckets, although the final figure won’t be confirmed until the raffle closes later this week.
Sponsors and suppliers included TomTom Productions, MORE FM, Jennian Homes Central Otago and Queenstown and Community Trust South.

CRIMELINE
Drink driver almost EIGHT times the limit
Police apprehended a 46-year-old local driver with an astonishingly high breath alcohol level almost eight times the legal limit.
The man was stopped in Frankton at 3.30pm on Monday, 2 December, and blew an alleged 1981mcgs. That’s thought to be one of the highest levels clocked locally, although Police couldn’t comment on that. The legal limit is 250mcg. Constable Amanda Shute says Police stopped the vehicle on Kawarau Road after a complaint from a member of the public that the driver was allegedly swerving in their lane and had almost run off the road. It was peak school pick-up hour in Frankton when traffic was at its busiest. Senior Sergeant Glenn Wilkinson says that was “a very high reading”. “It’s obviously very concerning that someone that intoxicated was driving on our roads,” he says. The man was automatically suspended from driving for 28 days and will appear in the Queenstown District Court at an unknown date.
A 63-year-old local man was also charged with driving with an excess breath alcohol level, third or subsequent, after allegedly blowing 600mcgs when stopped at a Police checkpoint just before 7pm on Saturday, 30 November.
Crash and go
At 6am the next morning, Sunday, 1 December, a driver allegedly crossed the centreline into the opposite lane on Gorge Road, crashing through a fence, dropping 1.5m into a carpark, then careering a further 10 to 15m and crashing into another fence before finally coming to a stop. Police were called by a witness, but the driver had fled the scene prior to Police arriving. Shute says enquiries are continuing as Police locate the driver.
Assault on bar bouncer
A 29-year-old Christchurch person has been charged with assault after allegedly approaching a bar door security officer and punching them in the face at 3.35am in Camp Street on Saturday, 30 November. Shute says Police were called after the person had been removed from a bar. They spoke to the person at length but shortly after the officers left the scene, the person allegedly approached the security officer and punched them.
And a 38-year-old local male has been charged with disorderly behaviour after a bit of a rampage in Shotover Street at 12.35am on Friday, 29 November. Shute says he allegedly grabbed a broom and snapped it on a power box then approached a male and punched him in the face before the pair had a brief altercation.
Tree fell on house in high winds
Local fire crews were also called to Fernhill on Tuesday night, 3 December, after high winds caused a tree to fall onto a house, causing damage to the house. Fire and Emergency Otago Lakes Group assistant commander Nic McQuillan says thankfully nobody was hurt, but he’s cautioning property owners who have trees that look unstable to get advice, or call an arborist.
“Be aware in these high winds, be proactive,” McQuillan says. He’s also urging outdoors lovers to take responsibility for their actions when lighting fires, check the regulations and fire hazard and register any fires on checkitsalright.co.nz.
“We’ve had a number of out-of-control fires in the last month caused by carelessness when people are burning off,” he says. “People need to take all the right safety measures and ensure their fires are supervised at night.”
He’s concerned that people make sure any fire they’re lighting is ‘legal’ heading into what forecasters are predicting should be a hot summer. Heli rescues
A St John spokesperson says a patient was airlifted to Lakes District Hospital from Skippers in a moderate condition just before midday on Sunday, 1 December, by the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter. No further detail was available. A patient was also airlifted to Dunedin Hospital from Fernhill around 3pm on Tuesday, 3 December, after what is believed to have been a biking accident. A St John spokesperson says one ambulance and two helicopters responded and there was no patient condition available.

Another busy and productive few weeks and it was great to have Housing Minister Chris Bishop in Arrowtown recently to officially open Tewa Banks, a project led by our amazing Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust on land gifted by the QLDC.
Chris Bishop had promised to return to open the development if he was fortunate enough to become Housing Minister when here before the election looking at what the trust was doing with CEO Julie Scott and myself, and he is good to his word.
I chair the Social Services and Community Select Committee and last week we had a number of agencies before us for Scrutiny Week.
With the Ministry for Culture and Heritage I asked about screen rebates and their importance to the screen industry in New Zealand and to our region.
We discussed the importance of developing both our domestic film sector and attracting overseas film shoots to NZ. Both help grow our domestic film industry and workforce, and also help market our country internationally for our visitor economy.
The CEO of the Ministry said it would decimate New Zealand’s screen industry if we didn’t have rebates in place, underscoring how important it is to stay internationally competitive in film.
I was also interested in the value of the Arts and Culture sector to the economy given it adds $16.3 billion, or 4.5 per cent of New Zealand’s GDP.
It underlined just how important initiatives like Queenstown’s own Te Atamira are, both as a community asset and as a space to help drive the economy. I raised in the committee the huge value of having a space where elderly can go to paint, young can go to dance, and the community can go to connect and reflect.
Finally, the green shoots of spring have had me thinking this year about the incredible environment we live in and what more we could do to enhance it.
When my family first moved to this basin, we planted a kowhai seedling on a piece of bare ground that now attracts tui to feed.
The success of our one kowhai tree has made me wonder what more we could achieve if everyone in the basin planted some more bird feeding plants on their land.
We have some amazing initiatives like Project Tohu to recloak Coronet Peak with indigenous plants, one of the largest revegetation projects in New Zealand.
Having spent a lot of the last four years in Wellington, I’ve been inspired by their efforts to bring kaka back to the city - I often see kaka flying across the grounds of parliament.
Why couldn’t we do this here in the Wakatipu, bring back our birds like the kaka, kea, tui, kereru, kakariki, mohua and more?
I would love to see that happen.

Holiday fun at Te Atamira
by Jessica Allen
Te Atamira has curated a fun-filled arts and crafts programme for the kids during the summer school holidays. Kicking off on 19 December with the Christmas programme, it’ll continue in the New Year from 8 January. Art teacher Michelle Somers will host a range of multidisciplinary workshops, set to enhance and enthuse for age groups from 5-7 and 8-12 in either full-day or half-day sessions.
Led by Somers, one of the goals is to provide opportunities for young people, and to explore how Te Atamira can continue to provide new opportunities for those who come back. Somers was a high school art teacher in the UK, and has worked in the arts education field in Australia, too. She made the move to Queenstown and is passionate about the arts and everything that Te Atamira is delivering.
“We’re running a Christmas-specific programme on the 19th, 20th and the 23rd of December, where we’re going to explore a range of drawing and painting, some textiles and crafts, as well as print making,” Somers says. “Things pick up again then on the 8th of January, and it’s going to be our biggest programme of the year. It’s a programme that provides a real range of hands-on learning experiences in the arts.”
They will be running a variety of workshops that give tamariki the opportunity to explore a range of techniques to spark their creative side from clay sculpting to printmaking, puppetry, painting, performance art, and mosaics. There’ll also be the opportunity for the kids to dive deep into the exhibitions on display at Te Atamira.
“In terms of the performance, we’re going to be doing some improv drama classes. We have a creative music workshop transferring art to sound with Turn Up The Music’s Erica Hastie. We’ve got some really exciting dance classes as well where we’ll be providing intros to musical theatre jazz with Nina Hermanns from ProDance NZ. Really excitingly, we’ll be doing an intro to with Latin Soul Dance as well. A really exciting couple of weeks ahead – there’ll be a real buzz about the place.”
For the first time this year they’ll also be introducing a digital art drawing class. Feedback on past years’ holiday programme has always been positive and
parents are appreciative of the efforts that Te Atamira is putting into creating an educational and creative environment. They aim to offer engaging classes that go beyond what will be taught in school.
“It’s definitely moved into a more educational realm, where children are getting the chance to learn about art forms and art styles in a very fun and open environment. I think we’re doing a great job of interweaving educational aspects in a fun and engaging way.”
Some examples of the workshops on offer include Wear Your Words – Badge Making, where children get inspired by the Use Your Words exhibition and make a statement with their creativity – they will explore typography and design to create bold mixed-media badges that express what matters to them. There’s also Clay Safari where children will sculpt a tiny elephant, Collaborative Canvas which explores teamwork to unleash creativity and bring a large-scale masterpiece to life, and Ocean Mosaic, where a colourful sea turtle will be crafted.
The Christmas programme will include painting different holiday-themed goodies including a toy train and a gnome, making a macrame Santa, handmade miniature stockings, textile Pohutukawa and an exploration of printmaking by making Christmas cards.
If you’re not a kid, there’s plenty coming up at Te Atamira for you too. They’re continuing the Saturday Arts Social, which is a multi-arts programme and morning tea designed for the 65+ community. It’s on each Saturday from 10.30, with the next one on the 14th where the Wasabi Choir will do a performance. There’s also a Washi Tape and Drawing Workshop with Veronica Herber – Lyrics and Lines artist – on 25 January, and a crochet workshop with Ani O’Neill on 1 and 2 February.
The workshops kick off on Thursday, 19 December, and are split into age groups of 5-7 and 8-12. You can choose between morning and afternoon workshops or book in for a whole day – it’s $32 for a half day or $64 for the full day. You can head to teatamira.nz to view the full programme, book in and find more information.
Getting more resilience in the garden with hoops and mulch
What a spring this has been. Wet, dry, hot, cold, snow, sleet, hail, and lots of frosts. Hopefully this isn’t a sign of the kind of weather we can expect for summer.
It’s made for a crazy veggie gardening season so far. My stone fruit trees are getting hammered by curly leaf with all these wild weather conditions, and my apples and pears are clinging on to their fruit – so far, so good. Early potatoes have definitely been nuked by the cold snaps; I haven’t rushed to get veggies in the garden, gradually getting them in as a warm spell hits. This is definitely a season for frost cloth and hoops to even out all those highs and lows your veggies are experiencing. More than ever we need to build resilience into our food-producing systems. This article is a little on hoops, frost cloth and mulching.
To even out temperature swings, you can use some homemade hoops (or Redpaths Kerilea 1m x 1m hoops) and some frost cloth – I rattle on about these like a broken record. A decent frost cloth will keep everything underneath four degrees warmer on a cold night. Then when we swing from two to 22 degrees, the frost cloth can work in reverse keeping the hot at bay. The goal is to stop using the frost cloth as weather temps even out.
With that said, I will continue to use the hoops and frost cloth across summer on many brassicas, especially leafy tender greens – think bok choi, mizuna, mibuna, lettuce, rocket, and so on. When the scorching summer eventually arrives, these tender greens love the shade – frost cloths give about 17% shade. We can also reuse windbreak cloth for this job.
Mulching the soil is another great resilience measure. It helps keep valuable moisture in, it breaks down feeding the soil food web (bacteria, fungi, worms, etc). It prevents soil compaction that occurs from rainfall, slows down the leaching of our valuable nutrients so our plants have what they need to grow, and stops weeds invading your vegetables. It just keeps on giving. We can buy mulches in, often used are lucerne, pea straw and barley straws. All fantastic mulches that do come with a health warning for your garden. Herbicide residues and weed seeds. So even though I’m still using Lucerne straw in my garden, I’m trying to pivot away to other possibilities. This is no easy task but worth the effort.
Comfrey grown elsewhere in the garden under fruit trees or in an unused spot of the garden can be harvested regularly during the growing season and placed on the soil surface as a mulch. It needs regular application as it breaks down fairly rapidly. Instead of taking all your flower, hedge, shrub and tree prunings to the local compost centre, they can be put through a mulcher to create longer-lasting mulch for your beds.
Green manures can be used as a living mulch. A common mix is lupins, mustard and oats. Sow the whole bed with the green manure mix generously. The green manures need to be tamed occasionally to not swamp the veggie plants. The trimmings are dropped where you chopped, producing more mulch. I’m a big fan of using broad beans as a living green manure –when chopped back they produce lots of material to use on that bed as a mulch. Other mulches might include looking at the weedier plants in our district and harvesting them to take home.
I’m just starting to experiment with Elderberry bushes/trees. They are very weedy and grow at prolific rates, producing a lot of mulchable material. Remember when harvesting to put the whole plant leaves through the mulcher to give a great mix of nitrogen and carbon in your mulch. If you have space or an unused corner, consider growing mulches for your veggie garden. Compost can also be used as a mulch if you have enough of it.
Larger pieces of compost mulch can be left after sieving your compost for fines that you might pop in a seed raising mix. Otherwise just use your unsieved compost as a mulch.
Chopped up cabbage trees make a great mulch. Unchopped, they are a good carbon source for your compost heap. No-nos in mulching are pine and eucalyptus wood chips. They don’t break down easily – fine to be used in a formal or native garden, make sure you pop some manure or blood and bone down first. Grass clippings are also good as mulch for your carrots. The number one technique for preventing Carrot fly.
Happy composting and gardening.

functions Christmas
It’s December and there are only three weeks to go until Santa arrives.
With the sun shining and a well-earned break approaching, it’s a great time to reflect on what 2024 has brought us.
It’s been a challenging year with staffing shortages, visa hurdles, and ongoing health concerns, but no doubt your team has risen to the occasion.
The work Christmas function is an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge everyone’s hard work and dedication. It’s a chance to come together, relax, and appreciate each team member, and boost morale as we approach the busy summer season and 2025.
If you’ve not booked yours yet, there are still options available to celebrate a successful year, including fine dining at the Sofitel hotel - see below.
My Life Story
by Sue Fea
FRANK WYLIE
Frank’s got the knack
Few people can boast reaching the pinnacle of their career at 73 and coaching local swim champions to national stardom, but quietly spoken, cool, calm Frank Wylie can.
Still ski instructing at Coronet Peak after nearly 40 years in the job, Frank got the surprise of his life in October when he was awarded NZ Ski Instructor of the Year at a gala dinner. It was “a big shock and a huge honour” just to be nominated out of 600 to 700 contenders. “That alone was just huge,” Frank says, still chuffed. “They said it wasn’t awarded for longevity,” he grins.
That honour, and coaching Queenstown Swim Club kids to become national age-group champions, some even making waves at the Australian champs, are right up there in life’s great moments for Frank. A stint with Napier Aquahawks also saw him named NZ Country Club Coach of the year.
Born in Timaru, Frank was a Pleasant Point farm boy who rode ponies and ‘lived for rugby’, athletics and cross-country champion at primary school. Boarding at Timaru Boys’ High, he was regularly caned for serious offences like not having his socks pulled up, but sporting accolades made up for it. Frank played tennis and was greatly inspired in his athletics by House Captain Dick Tayler, who became a 1974 Commonwealth Games gold medallist.
After dabbling in insurance, a stint in the Territorials, including jungle training in Fiji, Frank worked in Australia before heading to Christchurch Teachers’ College in his early 20s. They were great times, playing cricket and rugby, making selection for the Canterbury B rugby side.
Mount Hutt ski trips became the norm and soon he and his mates were off to Winter Park shovelling snow for a season, starting what would become fi ve back-to-back winters between Queenstown and Colorado for Frank. In Winter Park Frank met assistant director Bruce Bowlin, who also worked at Coronet Peak. “He urged me to come to Queenstown to instruct in 1981,” Frank says. “It was a quaint, delightful little place with a really positive vibe. You felt anything was possible and chased your dreams.”
That year Frank met Aussie wife of 40 years Brenda, a nursing student from the Gold Coast, on the Mount Cook ski bus. “We were pen pals for four years until I plucked up courage to ask her to marry me.” They did a cotton harvest in Aussie and instructed at Winter Park before heading back to NZ.
Frank taught at several schools in Poverty Bay until Brenda’s brother-inlaw, national development coach for Australian swimming, invited Frank to manage the Southport Olympic Pool on the Gold Coast. “He coached me with the Master swimmers, and I became quite good.” Son Andrew arrived in 1989, destined for water and snow.
Back in Queenstown Frank and Brenda managed the district council’s Wakatipu High School pool outside school hours from 1998 until 2008 when Alpine Aqualand opened. Frank became the fi rst professional coach
for the local swimming club. “Within two seasons we were winning national medals, and the Queenstown club had not previously had a swimmer qualify for national age groups,” he says, proudly. “It showed that fulltime coaching produced great results and put us on the map. But I had a great group of kids, and great parental support. A coach is only as good as his swimmers.” The kids kept him young. A brotherly prank saw a young towel clad Matty McLean (ex-Breakfast host) frantically searching the school grounds for his clothing with school about to start.
Advice from his fi rst Coronet Peak Ski School director Weems Westfeldt has stayed with Frank, who’d fi nd himself instructing everyone from highpowered doctors and lawyers to famous American astronauts. “He’d say, ‘You’re just ski instructors. Don’t take yourselves too seriously.’” When Aussie Cricket captain Ricky Ponting reckoned he should be skiing the Meadows Chairlift within half an hour Frank was fi rm. “He couldn’t understand why he wasn’t skiing like me after just 20 minutes.”
The 1985 season, while the Wylies were in Gisborne, only lasted seven weeks, sometimes the norm back then. By 1994 the advent of snowmaking had increased the season out to 14 or 15 weeks. “It was very unusual to have any skiing here before July without snowmaking.”
Frank’s fi tted more than his fair share of chains in heavy snow during 30 years at Coronet Peak and there have been some close calls. “Brenda, Andrew and I were in a ski bus well up the Remarkables that was sliding backwards in the mid-90s. Fortunately, it hit a berm left by a grader which stopped us sliding over the edge. It was a frightening experience.”
On a lighter note, two young Coronet Peak instructors spent the night in jail missing the staff Christmas party after being sent to fi nd a Christmas tree. “They chopped it down from the park,” Frank grins.
These days he and Brenda are Arrowtown moteliers but Frank’s not retiring yet: “I just fi led my application to instruct again next year.”

Alker’s Queenstown missionBungy boost for youngsters
Having claimed his second season-long Charles Schwab Cup on the PGA Tour Champions last month, Steven Alker has confirmed he is returning to Queenstown once again in an attempt to claim the New Zealand Open title. The 104th New Zealand Open tees off at Millbrook Resort in Queenstown between 27 February and 2 March 2025.
The objective for Alker is clear – to see his name on the Brodie Breeze trophy alongside some of the country’s greatest golfers including Sir Bob Charles, Greg Turner and Michael Campbell.
Alker won the Leading Amateur at the 1989 New Zealand Open when Greg Turner won his first title and has finished runner-up in the 2001 and 2002 events alongside Michael Campbell.
“Absolutely, the aim is to be holding the trophy come the end of the tournament next year. To win the New Zealand Open is something I have always wanted to achieve and I feel that my game is in a great place in terms of consistency and performance under pressure,” Alker says.
“There are some great names on that trophy and I would love to see my name on there too. I have watched a few other Kiwis get the chance to lift the trophy, I hope that 2025 is my turn.”
Speaking about returning to Millbrook Resort, Alker is looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and having local support behind him once again.
“It’s always great to have a crowd of friends, family and supporters following me during the tournament. Locals come out in force for us Kiwis and it really does make a difference.”
Four emerging Queenstown athletes have been selected for a new action sports development programme aimed at equipping young talent with skills required for a potential elite career.
Promising young Kiwi snowboarders Keani Wilson and Brooke Hansen, both 17, and downhill mountain bikers Quinn Ravenwood, 13, and Indy Deavoll, 16, are the first teenagers to be selected for AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand’s (AJHBNZ) the RISER programme.
The new programme aims to help young athletes competing at the highest level by opening the door to access important resources, such as performance development, social media training and financial support – skills needed to springboard the athletes’ existing talents towards a potential elite career and prepare them for international sponsorship opportunities.
AJHBNZ co-founder and managing director Henry van Asch says: “For me, this programme feels like it’s coming full circle. In my twenties, I represented New Zealand in European Speed Skiing and competed internationally in downhill mountain biking, so I understand the challenges aspiring highperformance athletes encounter.
“We believe it’s important to support young Kiwis on their journey to achieving excellence in their respective disciplines, with the overall goal of helping them to be noticed by global brands. If we can help our RISER athletes to get noticed by big players like Red Bull, for example, then we have done a good job.”
