On the surface, Fast-Track might look like a good way to get things moving across New Zealand. But in reality, it is a side door for developer-led expansion that bypasses our opinions and dreams for our place. This FastTrack framework almost guarantees approvals.
Last week, there were nine developments approved for Fast-Track around the Queenstown Lakes and I have to ask, what was the point of submitting on spatial plans, climate action plans, long-term plans, regenerative tourism plans, if it’s all for naught? It is disempowering and disheartening. Planned growth has been swapped for opportunistic development.
Coronet Village along Malaghans Valley is a case in point. It’s essentially a new town in a valley renowned by locals and tourists for its stunning rural scenery and is also a growing area for astrophotography more commonly known as Dark Sky. It is in a rural corridor, there are no services in the area, so connections to power, drinking water, wastewater and stormwater will need to be made and will create extra load on a system barely coping. The roading system in and around Malaghans Valley cannot manage another housing estate of almost 800 homes located there.
With infrastructure struggling to keep up with growth, roads under strain and bridges at or over capacity, and massive rates increases, is this the best way for New Zealand to be using Fast-Track? For scattergun development that ends up costing us all in the long run?
A horrifying aspect of having Coronet Village in Malaghans Valley is that wastewater would be discharged to the ground and as the land is in the upper catchment, it would flow downstream into Lake Hayes. Infesting the headwaters of the Mill Creek catchment with intensive housing is a major step backward for the lake.
To be frank, I think there needs to be a much bigger discussion about what we want Queenstown to be like in the future and where we draw the line with growth. People also need to be accountable for their projects and plans rather than using a “work-around” like Fast-Track. We live in a democracy, right? The time, effort and cost that has been put into Fast-Tracking would have been better spent accelerating fixing the Resource Management Act (RMA) for the long term.
I chair the Malaghans Valley Protection Society (MVPS) and I urge you to join our society and help stop Coronet Village. We’re not anti-development; we are pro-development that makes sense: www.mvps.nz.
There is growing discontent and concern about other opportunistic FastTracks across the district too, so please use your democratic rights and check them out as well.
James Hall, Malaghans Valley Protection Society Chairman

Fast-Track, slow roads?
by Paul Taylor
Fast-Track plans for another 2800 homes along Queenstown’s Southern Corridor are likely to cause a few headaches for transport planners.
Last week, it was announced that RCL Group’s Homestead Bay development, out beyond Jack’s Point, is one of nine Queenstown Lakes projects included in the Government’s Fast-Track Approvals Bill.
Melbourne-based RCL splashed $70 million on 163ha of farmland, formerly part of Remarkables Station, back in 2023 and altogether owns 200ha there. The company has already developed the massive Hanley’s Farm subdivision nearby.
But, while another 2800 homes is likely to make a major impact on Queenstown’s housing crisis, it will also add significant amounts of traffic along the road. And Town Planning Group’s 900-home Gibbston Village project, further along the road, is another of the nine Fast-Track projects. Last month, Queenstown Lakes District Council strategic growth manager Anita Vanstone told councillors the new Kawarau Falls bridge is expected to hit capacity within two years.
Around 1200 vehicles per hour travel across the two-lane State Highway 6 bridge northbound towards Queenstown in the morning rush, then return in the evening. The bridge, which only opened eight years ago, has capacity of 1500 vehicles per lane (in each direction) at peak.
“Under the existing travel behaviour profile, the Kawarau bridge will not be able to accommodate demand generated by the existing zoned development,” Vanstone said.
NZTA Principal Transport Planner Tony Sizemore says they’re aware of the problem.
“We are working collaboratively with QLDC and the developers to develop a plan for infrastructure improvements to increase capacity,” he says.
“We are proposing to develop a Strategic Network Plan looking at the critical connections into and out of Frankton and on to Queenstown Town Centre with a particular focus on how to address the additional growth impacts, and this will include reviewing the Southern Corridor, and reconfirming the requirement for the currently unfunded elements of the existing transport programme.
“We are in a constrained funding environment, so this proposed work is subject to prioritisation of existing NZTA strategic transport planning activities.”
A potential second bridge across the Kawarau has been mooted. There have also been shelved plans for a new road on the southern bank of the Kawarau, towards Kawarau Gorge, possible linking to SH6 at Lake Hayes, but both would cost many tens of millions of dollars. More direct active travel routes are also needed, say locals.
Sizemore says the increased demand from the Southern Corridor “only makes the upgrade to the BP roundabout more urgent”, rather than redundant.
“This project is a critical element of the entire Queenstown transport programme as this intersection is the key node in the network and must operate efficiently for all modes of transport travelling through it.”
RCL Group CEO David Wightman, meanwhile, says the development can enable Southern Corridor’s expansion through the provision of infrastructure works “to build out a community that is commutable and where people can live, work and recreate”.
He says company decided on the Fast-Track process as the more conventional Resource Management Act processes have proved slower than anticipated. “We think we can help demonstrate that quicker planning approvals do not need to come at the cost of the environment, the quality of development or the wider Queenstown area.”
And he hopes RCL’s track record of developing high quality neighbourhoods at scale in Hanley’s Farm “gives people confidence in what to expect at Homestead Bay”.
Queenstown Airport boss Glen Sowry plans to sail the blue waters of the Mediterranean when he leaves the job next June.
Sowry announced last week he’s stepping down at the end of the company’s financial year after almost four years as chief executive.
While he’s not retiring from the world of work quite yet, the former Olympic yachtsman and professional sailor wants more time to follow his passion.
“My partner Tracey and I have had an ambition for a long time to be able to go out and do some cruising and adventuring on our own boat. So, we’re getting a catamaran built in France at the moment and it will be ready in June next year.”
They’ll spend the next few northern hemisphere summers exploring the Mediterranean in the Nautitech 44 Open performance cruising cat, they’ve named Wairua.
“It’s sort of like naming a child, because you bounce around all over the place, but we’ve landed on Wairua, which is a beautiful name because it’s te reo for spirit, but also ‘wai’ is water and ‘rua’ is two. Catamarans have two hulls, and we’ll be two people on the water.”
Sowry steps down
by Paul Taylor
And Sowry, who has already raced around the world three-and-a-half times and covered more than 100,000 nautical miles, plans to eventual sail her back to New Zealand.
“She’s well capable of sailing around the world and once we’ve seen enough of the Med, the plan is to sail back across the Atlantic, through the Panama Canal, and back to New Zealand.”
Until then, Sowry plans to continue living in Queenstown for eight or nine months of the year, working in governance positions that provide more flexibility than the CEO role. He’s been on the board of the New Zealand Olympic Committee for almost two years, and will start as the independent director of another company in the New Year.
“The intention is to remain reasonably active but not a full time executive.” Queenstown Airport Corporation itself has announced a new board chair in
the past few weeks. Simon Flood is replacing Adrienne Young-Cooper. But Sowry says, despite the timing, that has nothing to do with his decision. “No, we get on and work very well together. I’m delighted he’s been appointed chair and am looking forward to working with him until June.”
Sowry isn’t eyeing a place on the airport board though, saying it’s not normal practice for an outgoing CEO to join the board. “It makes it a bit tough on the new team. I think you’ve got to give the new CEO their space to do things their way.”
Sowry joined QAC during Covid in 2021; there were no flights in his first week. In August, the company announced a record $19.6 million dividend for its shareholders Queenstown Lakes District Council and Auckland Airport. QAC made $23.2 million in profit from $64.7m revenue for the financial year, as 2.5 million passengers (arrival and departures) passed through ZQN.
Lakes Weekly boss calls time
by Paul Taylor
Lakes Weekly Bulletin general manager David Gibbs is also sailing off into the sunset, retiring at the end of October.
Gibbs is stepping down after six-and-a-half years with Queenstown Media Group, steering the ship through the troubled waters of Covid. During that time, he’s added the Queenstown App, Queenstown Lakes Business Quarterly and Outlet Podcast to the stable, as well as making the LWB print a full-colour publication.
“Surviving through 2020 until today has been a highlight, both through the pandemic and also now an increasingly tough advertising environment,” he says. “Fortunately, there’s an incredible team with QMG who have supported me, many who have been at the company longer than I have, and will ensure it thrives moving forward.”
Gibbs also plans for some adventure in the coming months. He’s sailing off to Antarctica with his partner James, before heading up through South America. Once back home in Wānaka, he plans to continue volunteer work with Community Link and Abbeyfield House “helping these wonderful organisations raise their community profile”.
QMG director Scott Stevens says Gibbs’ vast media experience and deep understanding of the current media landscape has been invaluable to the organisation.
“Beyond that, he’s shown great leadership and that he really cares about people and the issues that affect everyone in Queenstown Lakes District. He will be greatly missed day to day but hopefully will have some continued involvement going forward.”

CRIMELINE
Lake rescue serves as reminder
Two people were rescued in the early hours of Friday morning after not returning from a kayaking trip in Queenstown. They’d set out on Thursday afternoon on what was planned to be a two nautical mile paddle from Geordie’s Creek to Twenty Five Mile Creek, on Lake Whakatipu.
But at 11pm, Police were notified they were missing and Land SAR, Coastguard Queenstown, two rescue helicopters, and officers were deployed to find them. Otago Lakes Central Acting Area Commander, Senior Sergeant Fiona Roberts, says they were located on the shore near Glenorchy-Queenstown Road, parallel to Pig Island, in the early hours of Friday in a good condition. “While it is fortunate this incident was resolved successfully, this is one of the four Search and Rescue incidents in the past week in the Southern District, with one other involving kayaks and two with dangerous high rivers.”
On Tuesday, 8 October, 23-year-old kayaker Daymon Bill Nuhaj, of Milford Sound, died while kayaking in the Sound.
And back in 2010, two young Frenchmen Raphaël Serge Soubrier, 21, and Yoann Lucien Georges Firdion, 24, died on a kayak trip in Lake Whakatipu.
Roberts says incidents like these to serve as a reminder for people to ensure they’re prepared when going out on a trip in the outdoors, especially in the water. Police urge anyone going near waters, no matter the skill level, to take the basic precautions to keep themselves safe in case something goes wrong. They include always wearing a lifejacket and taking a form of waterproof communication, or a waterproof bag to put a phone in, inside the lifejacket. A registered personal locator beacon can also be a lifeline in a life-threatening situation. Also check weather forecasts and pack extra clothes and food whenever going on an outdoors trip.

Busy week for rescue helicopter
Searching Lake Whakatipu was just one of the jobs that kept the Otago Rescue Helicopter busy in Queenstown last week.
On Monday, at about 1.30pm, the crew airlifted a teenager mountain biker from Wynyard Jump Park, Fernhill. He was in a taken to Lakes District Hospital in a serious condition.
Last Saturday, a 60-year-old woman was airlifted after falling on the Shirt Tail Track near Kingston just after 1pm. She suffered minor injuries. And on Sunday, a man in his 20s was also airlifted to Lakes District Hospital, in a moderate condition, after a motor vehicle accident at Gibbston at 6.22pm.
Bouncer punched in the face
A 19-year-old Auckland man allegedly assaulted a 32-year-old Queenstown security staff member outside Zephyr Bar at 2am on Friday, 4 October, after he’d been escorted out of the bar. Sergeant Tracy Haggart says the offender punched the security guard in the face twice after words were exchanged. The victim suffered pain to his face afterward and the Auckland man was charged with assault and dealt with in the Queenstown District Court on Monday.
Traffic stop uncovers meth utensils and imitation
firearm
A 57-year-old Queenstown man, stopped on a routine traffic stop at 10pm on Friday, 4 October at Lake Hayes, near Ladies Mile, ended up being arrested for possession of utensils for methamphetamine or amphetamine use, unlawfully carrying an imitation firearm and failing to carry out obligations in relation to a computer search. Haggart says officers noticed the drug paraphernalia in the vehicle once it stopped and a search located utensils and an imitation firearm. The man will appear in the Queenstown District Court on 4 November.

Rolling out the fresh black carpet
Expect to see road crews out and about repairing and re-sealing highways around Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago from now onwards, says NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA). “They will be working through some extremely hot conditions in coming months and appreciate people building in extra time to reduce stress when the highways are so busy, often with people unfamiliar with the local road layouts,” Peter Standring, Maintenance Contract Manager with NZTA, says. Police are working closely with the work crews to clamp down on any dangerous behaviour around these work sites. There’ll be no planned works over the Christmas peak period, to keep disruption to a minimum. Read more on lwb.co.nz

24-hour luger to raise money for Gumboot Friday
Arrowtown-local Brent Wallace will attempt to be the first person ride the Skyline Luge for 24 hours. It’s all for a good cause, taking place from 10am on 1 November, raising funds on Gumboot Friday and I Am Hope.
I Am Hope created the Gumboot Friday initiative to raise funds to provide free counselling to those 25 and under in a timely manner. Since the day’s inception in 2019, I Am Hope have provided more than 100,000 therapy sessions. Wallace was passionate about getting involved this year due to his own personal struggles in the past, and recognising how important these services are.
“We all have our wee moments in life, which I had a few issues a few years ago and I ended up seeking out counselling. Just due to a couple of life events which could of cost me my life,” Wallace says. “You sort of think you’re right – you’re dealing with it properly – but you’re not. After counselling I decided I wanted to do something which is going to benefit other people.”
Skyline have been amazing in helping bring all this together, too. Wallace explains that they have been behind the fundraiser from the moment he broached them. While the public will only be able to head up the gondola to support or join in during operating hours, there will be staff there to assist Wallace for the duration. He’ll also have a support crew to help him – he’s aiming to stop around every two hours for ten minutes or so. Preparations thus far have been intense.
“I’m doing three to four days of strength training a week, as well as using my running machine at home. My lower back, I think, will do me a bit of grief, but I’ll probably have a back brace and might end up carrying a big pillow with myself to sit down on every ride.”
Wallace is asking for help to make a real impact – any donation, big or small, will go directly to supporting mental health initiatives. You can also luge alongside him from 10am-7pm on the Friday, or just pop up to cheer him on. Wallace also wants to encourage any businesses that want to get involved to do so – they can donate at the link below, or sponsor him on a per lap basis. If you’d like to donate or find out more information about the big day, you can head to givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/luge24hour You can also follow Wallace’s journey to 24-hour luge on his Facebook and Instagram @luge24hour

Supporting young entrepreneurs

There’s a new market in town and its focus is on supporting the next generation of entrepreneurs. Queenstown Youth Market runs around once a month and is organised by MyFundAction Youth Development Centre (MYDC). The next opportunity to support up-and-coming business owners is at the start of November.
The team at MYDC focus on three key areas; entrepreneurship, leadership and volunteerism. The first market was held in June and feedback has been good at each event. Organisers are continuing to encourage the community to come out and support young people in the region, and for young people to get involved if they’ve been thinking of selling some of their goods.
“We wanted to give young people a platform to experience a market day, to develop their skills, such as communication, working, sales, just building their confidence in that kind of face-to-face sales environment,” Catherine Doye, programme and events coordinator at MYDC, says. “One of our pillars is entrepreneurship, so we also run workshops that help them develop skills related to that.”
Their age bracket spans up to 35, which allows different perspectives to be shared across the age groups. The majority of the stalls sell arts and crafts created by the stallholders, but also include service offerings and secondhand goods. The response from parents of those involved so far has been positive – they’re happy to see the kids get out and do something on the weekends while learning and getting to mingle with the public.
“Most of the feedback that I’ve got is the confidence stallholders are gaining in themselves. That’s why we keep doing it. They’ll be so nervous when they first arrive, but by the end of it they feel really confident. I’ve had stallholders reach out to me to say that, which has been really lovely to hear.”
While the markets were previously held indoors, through the warmer months they’ll be outside. Doye encourages any youth in the area to get involved –there’s no sign up fee, but MYDC do request 15% of sales, which is all put back into the youth development initiatives. They’re also welcoming any musicians who may want to play at the markets, too.
The next market will be on 10 November from 11am at 1/13 Red Oaks Drive (near SITE Trampoline). You can follow them on Instagram @queenstownyouthmarket and for those wanting to get involved, you can fill out the vendor form, scanning the QRcode.
Lakes District Museum & Gallery is digitising its archives
by Jessica Allen
Preservation of collections for museums is crucial. One way this can be achieved is through digitising the archives. The Lakes District Museum & Gallery is undertaking this large task currently with thanks to Impact100 Wakatipu. The archival collection includes photographs, manuscripts, heritage publications, oral history recordings, maps, plans and ephemera.
The process both increases access to the museum’s resources and protects them – if there’s a fire, flood or earthquake, there are digital copies of everything. Once complete, the museum will be able to provide documentation to schools that aren’t able to come in. It also allows everything to be easily searchable for staff and the public.
“We’ve wanted to do this for a long time – it’s expensive, you need quite specialised equipment and a lot of labour hours,” director of the museum, Jane Peasey, says. “We applied for the Impact100 grant last year and we were lucky enough to be given one, so it’s allowing us to crack on with the project.”
The grant was given in October last year and the museum started purchasing equipment soon after. It’s taken a little time to organise the workflow as they’ve been running since 1948 – there’s a lot to go through and they’ve had a number of different organisation systems over the years.
“We had to make sure that the process along the way was accurate. Do it once and do it right. We were lucky enough through Impact100, to meet a woman who lives here now who worked at Auckland museum in the digitisation department. With the impact grant we were able to hire her three days a week and use her expertise.”
Peasey says that the grant covers them for two years, which will help them get the bulk of the collection recorded, but the project will be ongoing. The team are very grateful for the grant and the recognition from the community.
A Queenstown hospitality frontline icon in his heyday, Englishman Roger Goddard learned the trade from the best, doing the hard graft, 16-hours, seven days a week, as a fi rst class, fi ne dining waiter on cruise ships around the world.
OE travels landed him in Queenstown where he’d found his people, eventually opening successful Queenstown Mall restaurant Britannia in 1986 with fellow front-of-house funnyman Doug Champion. At 83, Roger is still providing the banter and entertainment, but these days at Frankton’s Abbeyfi eld Home.
Born during World War II in Brighton, Roger mostly grew up in Portsmouth where the bombing became so bad that he and his brother had to be ‘debombed’ to safety in Yorkshire.
“My earliest memory is getting onto the train crying, holding my little brother’s hand,” Roger says. Families took them in until it was safe to return. Even post wartime was tough. “I remember looking in the shop window at a Mars Bar and you needed a war coupon to buy one, so I pinched one from Mum,” he grins. “Next thing she was coming after me with the cane.”
At 15, Roger set off to join the Merchant Navy spending six weeks at the Navy Training School in London preparing for a 10-year-career as a fi rstclass waiter on upmarket cruise ships like the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. “You soon grew up. It was tough with 16 of us crew sharing a room. You grabbed your food and sat on a box to eat it.”
He eventually worked his way up to work in the restaurants on the sought after RMS Caronia ocean liner serving American millionaires in style. “We’d do a fi ve-month world cruise starting with Norway. I came from the days when waiters wore a white towel over their arm, a white shirt and bow tie,” Roger says. “I’d carve chicken at their table, serve fl ounder in white gloves. We served caviar blini and Crepe Suzette was made pouring brandy and lighting the fl ame at the table.”
Roger recalls one wealthy American, cruising the South American coast requesting four fried eggs covered with strawberry jam every morning. “I worked on 10 big ocean liners for Canadian, South African and South American liners.”
He then worked in Jersey as British Airways ground crew before working in restaurants in South Africa, paying $10 to emigrate to Australia in 1972. From there he and his girlfriend bought a Holden EK station wagon for $400 and worked and toured Australia, camping at beach campsites. Sapphire digging in the bush out of Rockhampton landed Roger a 5-point sapphire and on the Gold Coast he heard about Queenstown. After many bus trips south from Auckland, a landslide blocking the road saw Mount Cook fl ying him to Queenstown for free. “It was July and freezing. There was nothing down the Mall, just one coffee shop. Coronet Peak wasn’t even really going. It was only Mickey Mouse then.”
Fortunately, he’d bought an electric blanket from Australia, huddled in bed
fully dressed in his Queenstown Motor Camp cabin. Population was 3500 and there were three policemen, including Sergeant Maloney.
Roger worked at Ramada, on the Earnslaw, at Skyline and Trans Hotel Disco where he met Doug, working as a barman from 1975. “I couldn’t believe the money I was making working three shifts a day at times – up to $356 a week and rent at the hotel staff accommodation for $70, food supplied.”
They catered for huge conference incentive groups of up to 900 for the likes of Coca Cola. “Helicopters landed on the beach and fl ew people up to the Remarkables. No expense was spared, trestle tables, oysters, cheeses and 1500 T-Bone steaks for the barbecue sent to Walter Peak on the Earnslaw, the staff following in clinker boats.
Downtown bars shut at 10pm so Trans staff worked fl at out until 4am or 5am. Staff raised heaps for charity fi ning any workmates caught around town smoking. Roger later ran the Travelodge bar, renowned for his late 3am last orders bell.
Ever the English entrepreneurs, Roger and Doug set up popular Hot Dog stands in the Mall by day.
They decided the old Bumbles Nightclub would make a great ship-themed restaurant and after a trip back to England where Roger sourced the old wooden decking, Britannia opened in 1986. The pair soon became renowned for their front of house antics and authentic nautical-theme and fl avours.
At businessman Jim Boult’s birthday party in the private dining room, guest tables were supplied with water pistols. “The last time I saw Karen Boult she was fi lling a water pistol in our kitchen,” Roger chuckles.
Roger sold his share after 10 years, running a café on the Gold Coast before driving Queenstown taxis for 16 years.
Old Queenstown friends are his family now. “We worked hard but boy, those were fun, carefree days,” he says.
Roger, left, on a holiday in Nelson with Doug, visiting old mate and former longtime Queenstown restaurateur Tony Robertson

Getting a head start
Growing everything from seed.
One packet of seeds goes a long way. When we start sharing seeds with neighbours and friends they go even further. The greatest thing is we get to take control of where our food comes from. We can share excess or process it into longer lasting goodies. All this starts with a few seeds.
I’m now climbing off my golden stallion and coming back to earth. I will often be seen in the veggie punnet section at the garden centre. These will give me an earlier crop than my seedlings. I’m into doing whatever it takes to grow great veggies.
So now is the time to sow seeds and keep sowing every few weeks. I go all out early pretty much sowing all my seeds in a couple of sessions for the season ahead. Then direct sow in the ground when the time’s right. The right time really equates to less frosts and the soil has warmed up. I get a head start in my tunnel house sowing early leafy greens.
Seeds I’m sowing right now in a tunnel house or under a mini tunnel house are leafy greens and spring onions. The leafy greens come in great mixed variety packets called ‘Mesclun mixes’ check out Kings Seeds they have a great selection of these mixes. Sow them thickly, so when they get to about 10cm you can trim with scissors for a salad. Leave some of the lower leaves so you can get a second or possibly a third crop.
In a few weeks I will sow zucchini, pumpkin and cucumber into pots. If we are having a warm spell I sometimes sow the zucchini and cucumber directly in the soil with a few big handfuls of compost mixed in the soil. The cucumber is definitely a tunnel/greenhouse crop or for planting outside December onwards depending on the type of summer we are having in a warm protected spot.
I like to have indoor (tunnel house) and outdoor zucchinis. The outdoor plants won’t get planted till mid-November along with pumpkin seedlings. Again it’s dependent on how spring is shaping up. Does it feel warmer than usual? One year I had pumpkins planted in mid-October. We were having a really warm spring. By Christmas I had big, glorious pumpkins.
Other years I’ve rolled the same dice and a week later we’re getting an arctic blast, frosts, howling winds and the pumpkins are done for.
I have no sense of the weather this year with so much weather happening this September, hopefully October settles down and warms up and I spin the bottle on some early plantings.
Back to sowing seeds
From mid-October start sowing a few seeds directly outside. Namely carrots. We still need to have some warmer weather. I pull all the mulch off the bed for at least a week. Mulch is great at feeding the soil and keeping weeds at bay. It also keeps the soil cool at this time of year, so let that sun heat up your soil. Nearly all seeds need warm soil to germinate.
Seed sowing top tips
1. Use a quality seed raising mix. You can make your own too. I will often buy a bag and expand it out with my own goodies in a big bin. I add loads of fine compost or vermicast and biochar. Sometimes a handful of slow release seaweed fertilisers.
2. If you’ve been banished out of the house with your seedlings, you might need a little extra heat to get your seedlings to germinate. A heat pad can make all the difference.
3. Mini greenhouse on your seed tray. They really speed up germination and subsequent plant growth.
Want amazing pumpkins and zucchinis this year? Consider using the Bokashi bucket composting system. It really does work. Even the most sceptical of gardeners come up to me with their minds blown by the results they’re getting.
These are subsidised by QLDC so get along to your council office and grab a couple. Then check out my top tips for using the Bokashi bucket system (scan QRcode).
4. Sunlight. Pop those seedlings in a warm sunny spot. Not enough sun will lead to leggy weak seedlings.
5. One seed tray can have multiple types of seedlings in it. You don’t need 20 broccoli plants to plant all at once.
6. Label or you will completely forget what you’ve sown.
7. If sowing directly into the soil, protect the bed with frost cloth or a windbreak till the seedlings are established.
8. Pop frost cloth on your seedlings at night even if there isn’t a frost forecast.
9. Local libraries are becoming seed banks. Check and see if they have some seeds for you or share some of the seeds you saved last season.
10. New to seed saving? Choose one type of vegetable you’re going to save seeds from this year. Lettuce and broad beans are easy to save.
Happy composting and gardening.
