BULLETIN

Building a lasting legacy

LOCALLY OWNEDSINCE FOREVER

As CEO of the Wakatipu Community Foundation(WCF), I’m thrilled to invite you to join us in a season of reflection and celebration. September marks Wills Month, a time to consider how each of us can leave a lasting impact on the future of our beautiful Wakatipu. Philanthropy isn’t just for the wealthy - every gift, no matter the size, contributes to the legacy we leave behind, ensuring that the causes we care about continue to thrive.

At WCF, our mission is to grow philanthropy. We believe everyone can make a difference, and through thoughtful giving, you can leave a meaningful imprint on the community you love. Whether it’s preserving our stunning landscapes or enriching the lives of our residents, we work alongside you to ensure your contributions support the areas you care about most.

The sense of awe we all feel for this beautiful place often drives our desire to give back. The majestic mountains, gorgeous lakes, and beautiful valleys instil a deep appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounds us. This awe compels us to think beyond ourselves, considering how we can preserve this stunning environment and ensure our community continues to flourish.

If you’re inspired to make a lasting impact, I encourage you to visit one of our partner law firms this September to make or update your will and consider leaving a gift in your will. By doing so, you’re helping to preserve what makes this place so special, ensuring that the Wakatipu we cherish remains vibrant for generations to come.

This shared sense of responsibility will be at the heart of our Spirit of the Wakatipu Gala on 19 October. The event’s theme, ‘Dream Big’, encapsulates our collective aspirations for a brighter, more sustainable future. The Gala will honour individuals and organisations that embody the spirit of generosity, commitment, and vision that defines our region. These awards are a chance to recognise those who have gone above and beyond to nurture both the people and the land that make our community special. We are incredibly grateful to our main sponsor, Gibbston Valley, and our other event and award sponsors to make this evening possible. Nominations for the awards close on 31 August, so if you know someone or an organisation whose philanthropy deserves to be celebrated, I encourage you to submit a nomination today.

As we move into the final stretch of 2024, let’s come together - whether through participating in Wills Month, attending the Gala, or simply recognising the good that surrounds us. Together, we can harness the power of awe that this remarkable place inspires and dream big for our community, ensuring that the Wakatipu remains vibrant and flourishing for generations to come.

For more information on how to get involved and build your legacy, visit www. wakatipucommunityfoundation.org. I look forward to celebrating with you and honouring the extraordinary philanthropy that makes our region truly unique.

Safety call over fatal climbing spot

Wānaka woman Neeve Byrne broke her back, ankle and wrist in a fall at the same Queenstown crags where a climber died last week.

Byrne, now 28, needed an operation to fuse her spine after falling around 30 metres from Leonardo’s Wall, overlooking the Matakauri Park walkway, off Gorge Road.

She’s calling for greater awareness of the dangers of the steep drop offs there, and believes some signs should be put up to remind climbers.

“I’d hiked up to the bottom of Leonardo’s Wall and there’s a really steep drop right behind you, but you can’t really tell because there’s a quite a lot of bush in that area,” she says.

“I hadn’t started climbing yet and I looked up at the rock we were about to climb, took a step back, and there was nothing behind me.”

Byrne fell about five metres through the air and 25 metres “bashing off rocks”.

“And yeah, I broke my back. I had to have a spinal fusion, from T11 to L3 vertebrae fused. I had my ankle reconstructed with metal, and have some pins in my wrist as well.”

Despite the life-changing injuries from the accident, which hospitalised her for two months, she considers herself relatively lucky.

“I’m lucky I survived and that I can walk because it was a massive break,” she says. “If you look at the X-ray, it almost looks as if my spine was snapped in half. I still have nerve damage, I have to be careful about lifting, and I can’t run anymore, but I can still do lots of things, and can go on multi-day hikes, which was my main thing beforehand.”

Police and emergency services, including Hato Hone St John and the Wakatipu Alpine Cliff Rescue, were called again to the popular climbing spot, near downtown Queenstown, around midday on Wednesday, 21 August, last week.

Queenstown Police Senior Sergeant Steve Watt confirmed a male climber died after falling about 50m. His next of kin were being contacted and no further details about his identity were available as the LWB went to press. The matter has been referred to the Coroner.

Byrne says her thoughts are with the man’s family and friends. She hopes, whatever the circumstances, both incidents prompt others to take extra care,

“take a breath and check their surroundings” even when close to town.

“I think this area needs some more signs. There are steep drop offs before you’ve even clipped in to climb. My partner, who was with me that day, is a really experienced climber and he wasn’t aware of the drop off, and really blames himself, even though he shouldn’t. Ultimately, everyone’s safety is their own responsibility, and my story is a reminder that you need to be extra cautious whether at a dangerous spot in the back country, or somewhere like this.”

Queenstown Climbing Club committee member and climbing guidebook author Guillaume Charton says the local climbing fraternity is in shock about the tragedy.

“We will be awaiting the outcome of the Coroner’s inquest to know just what happened,” he says. “We enjoy climbing in this beautiful area and to hear this makes us very sad. We feel deeply for this person’s family and friends.”

He says the terrain in the Queenstown Lakes Central Otago area can be challenging and climbers and people exploring the outdoors always need to take every precaution, especially around cliffs and bluffs.

Japanese hospitality group looking for staff

Never want the ski season to end?

Queenstown hospo workers have the opportunity to follow the snow to Japan this year, with a recruitment drive by Hakuba Hospitality Group (HHG).

HHG is the largest hospitality provider in the Hakuba Valley, renowned for its powdery peaks with more than 10 metres of snowfall each season. It has a portfolio of 10 hotels, 13 restaurants and bars, and 50 chalets and apartments under management.

HHG is seeking talented hospitality professionals for a range of seasonal job openings, spanning from early December to mid-March, for an unforgettable working holiday experience in the Northern Japanese Alps.

Available positions include hotel managers, restaurant and bar managers and supervisors, chefs, kitchen hands, house keepers and more. And you don’t even have to speak Japanese, as more than 90% of the guests are international.

Live and Work in Snowy Japan

Interested applicants can apply by submitting their resume via the link on the landing page.

“We’re recruiting for three-month positions, for people to come work in the centre of Japanese powder snow, living at the base of the mountain, and having the flexibility to ski and ride, while enjoying engaging work,” explains HHG Sales and Marketing Director John Blagys

“We are hoping to have a chance to speak with talented candidates and explain why spending three months with Hakuba Hospitality Group could be the perfect opportunity for them.”

Hakuba Valley, just outside the city of Nagano, was host of the 1998 Winter Olympics and offers a lively après-ski scene and hot springs.

“You have the snow and also the experience of living in a country as unique as Japan, with cultural experiences at your finger tips, such as the 15th Century Matsumoto Castle 40km away, and Tokyo is only three hours away.”

“There are western restaurants and pubs in the village, so you are combining world class snow and the comforts of home, with the wonderful ancient culture and culinary scene of Japan. It’s a trip of a lifetime.”

‘In addition to an exciting roles within the hospitality sector, successful candidates can expect competitive pay, staff meals, discounts at 13 restaurants and bars, subsidized season rentals, free ski/snowboard lessons, the Happo One ski pass for select positions, and welcome and farewell parties.’

Welcome & Farewell Parties

Pride and suspected prejudice

Winter Pride organisers didn’t let the theft of dozens of rainbow flags spoil their party, as the huge LGBTTQ+ festival danced into action over the weekend.

Festival co-director Sam Coulthard says hundreds turned out for the free Pride in the Park event, on Marine Parade on Saturday, taking advantage of a fortunate weather window before the snow and rain hit.

“It was massive. It was amazing,” Coulthard says. “Everyone has just pulled together and the weather held out beautifully. It’s been a very refreshing and positive start after what happened with the flags.”

Around 29 flags were removed from poles downtown ahead of the festival, which is one of the biggest Pride celebrations in the southern hemisphere. Coulthard and codirector Odette Rose suspect homophobia could be behind the incident, as whoever was responsible would have had to go to some effort to cut them all down.

Queenstown Police released a CCTV image on Friday of four people they want to question over the incident. It shows the people walking along the street, one is draped in a rainbow flag and another appears to have a flag in their pocket.

Inspector Paula Enoka, Otago Lakes Central Area Commander, says police are “unaware of the motivation behind this theft” and encourages anyone who recognises the people or has information to get in touch. As of Sunday evening, police said no arrests had been made.

The rainbow flag banners cost around $400 each and replacing them for next year will cost an estimated $12,000. A Givealittle campaign launched on Friday has already raised $4,548.

Coulthard says Winter Pride’s first weekend of events have gone well, and the numbers have been better than expected.

“They’ve come in late but they’ve come in. We had people standing at our opening party, which was a sit-down show, so it was over capacity.”

Which way is up???

Canadian skier Matthew Vankka hit a huge backflip on the summit slopes above Treble Cone Ski Area on Saturday as the Winter Games 2024 got underway. Vankka won the men’s ski competition, as hundreds of international and Kiwi skiers and snowboarders went big in The North Face Frontier 2-star freeride event. There were Kiwis on all four podiums (read more on lwb.co.nz and the Queenstown App). The Games were scheduled to continue Monday with The North Face Frontier 4* event at The Remarkables’ Alta Chutes, where at least 25cm of snow fell over the weekend.

He says, however, Pride will need to find some funding to run the popular Pride in the Park event next year. The festival has lost three major sponsors and did not receive any funding from Queenstown Lakes District Council, so has borne the full cost of the running the expensive free event, as a way to get the community involved.

Various other events have taken place over the weekend (a full schedule is on the festival website at winterpride.co.nz), although Sunday’s on-mountain events at Cardrona Alpine Resort were cancelled due to the weather.

Winter Pride runs until 1 September.

Anyone who recognises the people in the CCTV image can Contact Police on 105 or online at police.govt.nz/use-105 using ‘Update Report’, referencing file number 240822/6540. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Snow Farm’s big day

Former Prime Minister Helen Clark officially opened Snow Farm’s new base building on Sunday, with dozens gathering as the snow fell to celebrate the milestone. General manager Sam Lee says the support for the new $750k hub has been overwhelming. “We have been amazed at the incredible generosity from our community – locally and beyond,” he says. “For the past two years, we have worked diligently to turn this base building concept into a reality and the new base area truly reflects the overall dedication, investment and mammoth efforts that has gone into making this project possible.”

CRIMELINE

Charges over crash

A 29-year-old local man is facing two charges of careless driving causing injury after a serious head-on crash on State Highway 6, at Lake Hayes, at about 7.20am, Tuesday.

Otago Lakes Central area road policing manager Senior Sergeant Steve Watt says a Nissan vehicle heading towards Queenstown, near Bendemeer Lane, crossed the centre line, crashing head on into a ute travelling in the opposite direction.

The 34-year-old passenger in the ute was flown to Dunedin Hospital and remains in intensive care with extensive injuries. The ute’s 34-year-old driver has also had to undergo emergency surgery and remains in Dunedin Hospital. All three were local residents on their way to work.

The driver of the Nissan was initially transported to Lakes District Hospital and later transferred to Southland Hospital for knee surgery and Watt says Police investigations are continuing.

“Part of that accident was attributed to distraction,” Watt says. “The offending driver was reaching to get something off the dashboard which caused him to swerve.” He has been bailed to appear in the Queenstown District Court on Monday, 26 August.

Watt is urging drivers to be extra defensive and cautious, to put phones and other distractions away, and concentrate on driving. “You’re in charge of a big piece of machinery which has the potential to kill you if you get it wrong.”

Uber driver dragged from vehicle and assaulted

A 53-year-old local man was arrested and charged with assault after he allegedly dragged an Uber driver from his vehicle and attempted to kick him at 9.15pm on Sunday, 18 August, all because he’d been asked not to eat food in the car. Watt says this sparked an argument and the offender then allegedly dragged the driver from his seat. “The victim was uninjured but very shaken up by the incident.”

Drunken Aussie broke shop sign

A “highly intoxicated” Aussie tourist was made to pay for wilful damage to a downtown Shotover Street shop sign after he broke it in broad daylight at 6.14pm on Monday, 19 August, in front of the staff who worked there, Watt says. Police located the man in an Uber and he returned to the shop to pay.

Drunk driver flips vehicle on Glenorchy Road

A 27-year-old Queenstown man, who flipped his vehicle after hitting a bank along the Glenorchy Road at 5.30pm on Saturday, 17 August, blew 707mcgs/ litre in a breath test. “It’s just another reminder that alcohol seriously affects your ability to drive, and he was lucky the outcome was not more serious as he put everyone else on the roads at risk,” Watt says. Police are awaiting blood test results, but charges are pending, and the man will appear in the Queenstown District Court.

Meeting will be livestreamed

Perhaps council’s staff advisers had little choice but to retrospectively make true the claim in their LWB response to my editorial that Long Term Plan deliberations are public. Hoisted by their own petard.

But due credit for also now agreeing to live stream, record and time stamp the proceedings for those of us who can’t spend the whole day watching.

Thank you - to both the executive leadership team, and to LWB for providing the public pressure platform required.

Whether the ELT’s also changed their advice on not needing to specifically protect council’s supermajority won’t be known ‘til the 28 August deliberations.

If not, we need just seven councillors to insist that those vital five words‘QLDC’s supermajority shareholding of QAC’ - are included in the LTP’s strategic asset register.

Monthly Column

Some big news out of Wellington last week, which presents a big opportunity for Queenstown and the wider region.

The Government has introduced a new framework for establishing Regional Deals, aiming to address New Zealand’s infrastructure deficit and drive economic growth.

The country faces significant infrastructure challenges, including deteriorating water pipes, failing roads, and a housing shortage. With a growing population, there is an urgent need for long-term infrastructure development in and around Queenstown.

Regional Deals will foster collaboration between central and local governments. Drawing from successful models in the UK and Australia, these deals are designed to enhance coordination, support economic growth, and improve infrastructure and housing supply. They will facilitate joint investment and enable regions to use various funding tools for infrastructure projects.

The rollout of Regional Deals will be gradual, starting with up to five regions invited to submit basic proposals. Councils are expected to keep proposals cost-effective, avoiding extravagant expenditures on presentations. New Zealand’s first Regional Deal is anticipated to be finalised by 2025.

In conjunction with these efforts, the economy is showing signs of recovery.

The Reserve Bank’s recent cut in the Official Cash Rate (OCR) to 5.25% provides relief for families and businesses. After enduring a severe cost-of-living crisis since mid-2021, marked by high mortgage repayments and low confidence, this reduction signals improved control over inflation and an end to extreme price increases.

Lower interest rates on mortgages and credit cards, combined with recent tax relief, will ease living costs further.

The Government is committed to reducing wasteful spending and focusing on essential services and infrastructure. Councils are being urged to adopt a similar approach by prioritising core services such as waste management, water infrastructure, and road maintenance.

Supporting this shift, the Government’s Local Water Done Well policy will help councils manage water debt through new Council Controlled Organisations.

A review of regulations that impose costs on councils is underway, including traffic management, which requires reform. These changes aim to alleviate financial pressures on local governments, enhancing their ability to deliver essential services.

Regional economic indicators are positive, with Southland and Otago recently identified as the fastest-growing regions in the country by ASB. This recovery is expected to boost business investment and growth, signalling a hopeful future for New Zealand’s economy which our region looks set to star in.

For Queenstown, I’m sure most locals will agree the quicker things get moving the better.

COMMUNITY NOTES

Wao Summit 2024: Pioneering Sustainable Construction in Wānaka and Queenstown

Wao Summit returns in October and for the fi rst time is dedicating an entire day in both Queenstown and Wānaka to the building sector.

While New Zealand aims for a construction sector with positive sustainable behaviours such as low-carbon practices, waste reduction techniques, and resilient and climate smart material use, the truth is that the country is behind many other comparable nations. Construction and demolition waste accounts for about 50% of all waste in New Zealand, most homes in our country generate about fi ve times too much carbon, and we have concerns over heating, cooling and dampness in our builds.

The Wao Summit offers a full day programme for building industry professionals that focuses on innovative approaches to sustainable construction and design. Attendees will gain insights into the latest developments and new ways of thinking for better building, network with leaders in the fi eld, and learn how to integrate these practices into their projects.

Education in sustainable building is essential for promoting environmental sustainability, economic effi ciency, regulatory compliance, resource conservation, public engagement, and innovation within New Zealand’s construction sector. Wao is working with a number of governing bodies from around New Zealand including: NZGBC, BRANZ, local councils and others.

Workshops will delve into the building ecosystem’s current state and its challenges with materials, climate, and energy. Masterclass sessions will explore different models being tested by developers, designers and businesses that are shifting the status quo in how we think about building communities. Practical toolbox talks will hear from our local builders in on-site sessions, diving into the management of recycling and waste. The lineup of speakers is impressive, with experts coming from a diverse range of professional backgrounds including policy, design, development, fi nance and many others.

CPD and LBP points will be available as part of attendance. CPD (Continuing Professional Development) and LBP (Licensed Building Practitioner) points are part of the regulatory framework for professionals in the building industry in New Zealand, designed to ensure ongoing education and skill enhancement.

The Wānaka building day will be held in New Zealand’s fi rst communitybased certifi ed passive building at the Luggate Memorial Centre on Thursday, 31 October, and the Queenstown building day on Friday, 1 November, at The Sherwood.

Tickets and the full programme of events can be found at wao.co.nz

Kate Moetaua Foundation enters its fifth year of scholarships

Applications for the 2024 Kate Moetaua Scholarship close this Saturday, 31 August. The scholarship was established in honor of the much loved community leader, wife, mum, and teacher Kate Moetaua, and aims to support students in sports and arts in the Whakatipu.

“The Kate Moetaua Scholarship is more than just fi nancial assistance; it is an affi rmation of the values Kate stood by and imprinted on everyone she held dear,” Anika Moetaua, Chair of the Kate Moetaua Foundation, says. “We are excited to support our talented local students to achieve their dreams for another year.”

Over the fi ve years 27 students have received funds to help them to achieve their dreams, ranging from new equipment, travel and training costs, attending workshops, specialised lessons and costs associated with living away from home to train.

Notably, 2021 recipient Olive Watherston has been recently selected to play in the Rugby Sevens women’s development squad, 2022 recipient Caitlyn Hollyer is currently playing in the NZ senior women’s ice hockey team, while 2023 recipients are also making their mark. Marley King-Smith has been selected to row in the NZ U19 team, Lachlan Boniface is playing in the NZ U18 ice hockey team, and Mackenzi Jackson is now training in Christchurch to continue to represent NZ in karate.

Top arts recipient in 2023, Mikaela Patterson, has used her scholarship funds to attend theatre and dance workshops, learning from tutors from around the world. Mikaela says that alongside the workshops, “the opportunities provided by receiving the scholarship have been instrumental in shaping my artistic skills, broadening my horizons, and enhancing my confi dence and leadership abilities”.

The foundation operates under the banner of the Wakatipu Community Foundation, and grants funds as scholarships that were raised by the community, including a golf day at The Hills in 2019, and the donations of many other generous locals.

Anika says they would love to be able to support more students, and particularly now when cost of living may be impacting a parent’s ability to support their child’s extra curricular activities. Donations to the foundation will be used to support our local talent and increase the amount of funds we give and students we support.

The scholarship is open to Whakatipu students in years 9-13, who face fi nancial barriers to achieving their dreams.

Application forms are on the Kate Moetaua Foundation and Wakatipu Community Foundation website and close 31 August, 2024.

WELCOME TO 24 TIME FOR PRIDE

Twenty years ago, the very first Winter Pride, then known as Gay Ski Week, began in Queenstown. At that time, legalised same-sex marriage in New Zealand was still over a decade away, highlighting just how much has changed since then.

Queenstown’s Pride Festival has witnessed significant social change over the years, including several name changes and ownership transitions. Last September, we took over the leadership, and we are thrilled to have the assistance of previous owner and community advocate, Sally Woods, whose passion and dedication helped shape the festival into what it is today. For 2024, we’re excited to introduce some new elements and a host of more laid-back social events on the calendar.

This year, with more than 50 events spread over 11 days, Winter Pride is bigger and better than ever. We’re thrilled to welcome new talent from around the world to be a part of the festival, bringing fresh energy and excitement to the shows, dining events, and other festivities. We’ve partnered with new venues and producers to create a diverse lineup that includes new shows, events that are free, and activities that are suitable for the whole community.

Winter Pride is one of Queenstown’s keynote festivals, contributing millions to its economic and cultural vibrancy. We’re incredibly proud to be taking Winter Pride into its next phase, and we don’t take that responsibility lightly, but for now - let’s party, Queenstown!

A Scottish Ceilidh Night

Arts+Culture

Time to don your tartan and pop on your dancing shoes this weekend – Cargo Collective are hosting their fi rst Ceilidh. The evening of Scottish entertainment promises to be a unique and enjoyable experience for all – expect singlemalt whiskies, traditional haggis and of course, plenty of dancing!

Tāhuna and Aotearoa have a rich Scottish history. Back in 1853, Nathan Chalmers, a Scottishborn settler, became the fi rst Pākehā to lay eyes on Lake Wakatipu. He was guided by Reko, a Māori chief from Tuturau, in exchange for a three-legged pot. Chalmers became sick on the expedition and a fl ax raft had to be made for him to travel the rivers and return home safely. Although he didn’t visit again, his stories inspired other settlers to head down these ways.

Today, we can still see the Scottish infl uence throughout the countryfrom Dunedin, which is named for the Gaelic Dùn Èideann after Edinburgh (meaning castle on the rock) to street names around NZ, and the various tartan and highland festivities throughout the regions. So, it makes sense to be having a Ceilidh here.

Malcom Blakey is the owner of Cargo Collective and hails from Edinburgh originally. He’s excited to put on the Ceilidh and has been waiting to have the right space to pull it together. Cargo Collective’s new brew hall has only recently opened, so he’s also looking forward to welcoming people to the space and putting on more events each month.

“I just felt that the venue is perfect for that kind of event,” Blakey says. “With my roots from Scotland, we thought we’d use that for one of our fi rst events because a lot of people haven’t seen the space yet – we only opened it up last month and this new event space is perfect for local gatherings and parties like this.”

Brad and Chrissie MacClure make up the band Little Green Men, who will be heading up from Invercargill to play the tunes. They’re used to playing to all different crowds at various events and Brad explains that these nights are always a highlight for those in attendance. They’ll be performing classics including Strip The Willow, Dashing White Sergeant and The Gay Gordons, as well as less formal songs for everyone to dance to.

“We’ve got a caller coming with us,” MacClure says. “He will teach the dances to people. It’s always a tremendous amount of fun – people who haven’t done it before are always blown away by how much fun it is – you don’t realise until you have a go. In this part of the world, there are still quite a few people who’ve never done it before.”

The all-around Scottish night welcomes and encourages everyone to pop along, no matter your background or abilities. Blakey says it’ll be on the more casual side of Ceilidhs – attendees can get involved as little or as much as they’d like. In addition to the dancing, he’s chosen a whisky from each of the fi ve whisky regions in Scotland as well as some Scottish gins, which will be available on the night. There’ll be an address to the haggis, too, where it will be piped into the room and a Robert Burns poem will be recited before the dish is cut open. If haggis isn’t your thing, there will also be other Scottish food available.

“It’s a really unique experience to be a part of and even if you haven’t been to one before or you’re a bit nervous about the dancing part of it, you don’t need to be because we have someone who leads the way for the dancing and shows us how it’s done. If people don’t want to get involved with the dancing, there are still other things to do – try some whisky or haggis, and just relax with your friends and enjoy the environment,” Blakey says.

Cargo Collective’s Whisky Waltz: A Ceilidh Affair will take place on Saturday 31 August. Doors open from 4pm with dancing starting at 6pm. Tickets and more information can be found at thecargocollective.co.nz/twilighttales

My Life Story

EMMA WILSON

Hitting the high note

All good love stories should have a happy ending, and, despite immense trauma and loss, Emma Wilson’s does.

Now one of Queenstown’s most passionate music teachers, for many years Emma’s song was far from a happy one.

Originally from England, she’s battled on though through the loss of a dear fi rst husband to cancer, and a precious brother, both way too young. But bright, colourful Emma still managed to come out the other side singing. In the end, a trip to New Zealand to fi nd herself amidst her grief, delivered Emma the best high note she could ever hope for – second husband Mark Wilson.

Raised in Dronfi eld, near Sheffi eld, England, Emma was “socially awkward” and discovered music brought “a sense of togetherness”.

Brother Martin Wightman, later a popular Queenstown teacher, had all the talent, she reckons. “I had to work at it.” Martin played trumpet, and Emma, who also joined choirs, bands and orchestras, played trombone. Their parents eventually joined in, forming their own British ‘Brady Bunch’ brass band of sorts. “We’d play Christmas carols for the community and perform at the local pub.”

Emma graduated to pantomimes and musicals which became her passion. Academia came easy, and Emma attended Cambridge University for her teacher training. “It was dreadfully posh,” she grins. “Homerton (Teachers) College was like the poor country cousin. They all looked down on us there, particularly as I came from the north.”

She immersed herself in the uni choir, performing glamorous requiems under top King’s College conductor Stephen Cleobury. No Ubers in the 80s. Emma biked home after a night out drinking, providing she passed the “If I can fi nd my bike, I’m sober enough” rule.

During uni holidays, washing up for a neighbourhood hotel, she met fi rst husband Howard, whose parents owned it.

Marrying at 22, Emma taught in a primary school in Lancashire where she “fell out of love” with music after cultural differences prompted a complaint to the principal that music was “the work of the devil”.

In 2000 Howard was diagnosed with a brain tumour, beginning the most challenging 10 years of Emma’s life, nursing and caring for him through serious seizures and suffering. The local brass band and annual Dartington Summer School kept her going.

After he passed, a broken-hearted Emma took a fi ve-month sabbatical in NZ where her brother Martin, about to become a father, now lived.

“I’d planned to write a book about the 10 years with Howard’s brain tumour. I had a little image of me sitting in the middle of a little fi eld with sheep, staring at the mountains and writing.”

That was 2010. The book’s now almost fi nished, but in the ensuing years Emma added one of its most glorious chapters.

She not only fell in love with Queenstown from the moment she landed, but also with one of the town’s musical darlings – blind musician Mark Wilson. “Mark was running the Community Choir when Martin introduced me, so I joined the rehearsals,” Emma says. “Twenty-fi ve people were hanging off Mark’s every word in that room as he played ‘O Holy Night’ to rag time, then Mozart, falling on his knees under the piano as we sang ‘fall on your knees’,” Emma laughs. “I was utterly in awe of this musical genius.”

It was hard to ‘get noticed’ so Emma admits to “shamelessly taking advantage of a blind man”, deliberately parking her car up by his apartment so she had an excuse to walk him home after Christmas Extravaganza rehearsals.

They married in 2012 after Emma completed her UK teaching contract. Unfortunately, Mark too had battled a brain tumour since 2009, however, in this case Emma could celebrate a happier journey.

Teaming up with local music teacher Alison Price, Emma turned her passion to teach kids into founding the Lakes Community School in 2014, catering for up to 100 kids. It all became too hard fi nancially, until Bill Moran, former directory of NZ Treasury, along with Jillian Jardine, launched the Turn Up The Music Charitable Trust. “We now have 150 kids in individual lessons and another 150 in groups, some subsidised if parents can’t afford it.”

In 2017 she bought brother Martin’s Kip McGrath tutoring business. “I absolutely loved running that place,” she says. Tragically, Martin passed away in 2018, plunging Emma into more deep grief and loss.

However, in true Emma style she bounced back as the life of the party. She can now be found playing anything from Crocodile Rock and South American dance music to a Meat Loaf medley and Mission Impossible theme song, with the Queenstown Party Orchestra.

Her passion for kids who are missing out has her currently training as a dyslexia assessor with SPELD NZ. “I think it’s immensely empowering for these kids. They’re not stupid. They just need to learn differently,” she says.

As for the book it’s still being edited, with the highs and lows of the Queenstown chapter now included.
