LOCALLY OWNEDSINCE FOREVER BULLETIN

Taking a little longer on the Long Term Plan

Earlier this month, Council formally deferred its Long Term Plan (LTP) process.

This decision was not taken lightly. It was necessary following the coalition government’s formal direction at the end of last year to bring planning and delivery of three waters infrastructure back onto councils’ books for Years 3-10 of the LTP. Under the former government, councils were only including three waters for Years 1 and 2.

This is significant. As a Council, we’ve spent countless hours working with staff to figure out how we’re going to do this. And I’ve got to be frank, we’re looking at these figures and preparing for some uncomfortable conversations and very tough decisions around priorities and what this means for rates increases.

Councils across New Zealand are all in the same boat– affordability is going to be a challenge for all of us. To put it into context, three waters makes up close to 60% of the Council’s capital expenditure programme. That’s a huge chunk and will affect our ability to invest in important community facilities and services. The sad part is we need these facilities and services more than ever before to maintain wellbeing, resilience and connection in our growing communities.

Costs are increasing across the board but revenue is not keeping pace. There is a huge body of work underway to investigate alternative funding sources. As Mayor I continue to actively lobby Wellington on the affordability challenges we have been working so hard over many years to address. While a visitor levy might still be on the table, it looks more likely to be collected and allocated at a national level, meaning it may not benefit us in the ways we need. There’s still a lot of uncertainty but what we do know is that we can’t just keep taking extra rates, year on year. Something’s got to give.

While we’ll be consulting on the draft LTP and adopting it later than usual we’ll still be opening applications for community grants in April. We’ll need to tighten our belts but it’s always an important opportunity for Council to provide support to the fantastic community efforts happening across the district. More on that soon.

We’re hopeful that the coalition government will begin to up the pace on discussions for local government revenue streams. In the meantime, we need to play the hand we’ve been dealt and do what we can to reprioritise our investment programme and limit the impact on ratepayers as much as we can. The draft 2024-2034 Long Term Plan will be out for consultation towards the end of June – I really encourage you all to consider what’s proposed and take part in the process.

Save Bob’s Cove fundraising drive

Opponents of the proposed 24-villa, Waimarino Luxury Lodge on 1.8ha of rural residential land overlooking Bob’s Cove have launched a Givealittle fundraising campaign to help fight the proposal in the Environment Court in April.

The resource consent application was declined by independent commissioners and agreement could not be reached during mediation last year between the council, applicant B Property Group and opponents - about 14 resident submitters who’ve formed Bob’s Cove Punatapu Community Trust.

An appeal will now be heard before the Environment Court starting in late April and trustee Carolin Friese says the group now needs to raise at least $60,000 to engage the various experts necessary to fight the development in court.

An initial fundraising push to enable the group to be represented at mediation in September last year raised some $30,000, however, most of that money has been used, she says.

“We’re now raising the remainder for the Environment Court proceedings. It’s cost us about $35,000 so far and our main costs will be in the next few months,” Friese says. With the fundraising target currently sitting at $31,465 the group needs to raise another $60,000 to reach its $94,000 target in order to be adequately represented in the Environment Court. The money will be used to pay legal fees, a landscape architect, resource management planner and ecologist. Donations have been trickling in, but the group really needs the momentum to pick up now with the late April court date fast approaching.

The ‘Save Bob’s Cove’ campaign page says the trust was formed to “protect and preserve the outstanding natural landscape and ecological biodiversity of Bob’s CovePunatapu by working closely with existing conservation

groups, the local council and wider Bob’s Cove community”. It says the charity is made up of ‘long-term local residents with strong community connections. Friese says she and trust members hope that others will get behind the appeal and share their concerns and objectives. “We have major concerns about a development of this nature and scale proceeding in the Bob’s Cove area,” she says. “We are pretty committed to this.”

Resident Tim Buckley says he’s hoping people will show their support by spreading the word and donating some money to help keep the campaign alive.

Any surplus funds raised will be used for much needed pest control in the area. Height poles have been placed on the site by the applicant.

The Environment Court hearing is set down for April 29 until May 2 in the Queenstown District Court.

Dealing to green waste with haste

There appears to be strong community support for the Queenstown Lakes District Council’s proposal to introduce kerbside collection for food scraps and organic garden waste by 2026/27.

However, community groups are keen to ensure the end product – mulch and compost, is returned to the district to benefit public reserves, community and residents’ gardens.

The council has been in early discussions with the Central Otago District Council over future access to a planned, yet-to-be-built composting facility it will operate in Alexandra, trucking the food scraps and green waste there from around the district. The proposal has yet to go to public consultation. The new 80-litre bins, smaller than the existing wheelie bins, would cost each household an extra $83 in rates per year.

Under the proposal, the 140-litre red bin refuse collection in Queenstown Lakes would switch to fortnightly.

The district council currently sends about 38,000 tonnes of waste to landfill annually and the service would reduce that by an estimated 5000t.

Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association’s Nicky Busst is all for it and says this would bring the district up to speed with other districts already offering kerbside green and food waste collection.

“We’re fully embracing council’s green waste collection initiative. It’s a really positive and sustainable move and I hope it comes sooner than planned,” Busst says. “However, we’d really like to see the end product put to use back in our district so that we see that full circular economy returning here. We’d be keen to make submissions to that effect.”

“It’s a no brainer. It needs to happen and soon. I’m just really pleased to see that the council is making changes, introducing new waste solutions, and looking at the redistribution of that waste,” she says.

As a Keep NZ Most Beautiful Small Town Award winner due its impressive sustainability practises, Arrowtown is keen for any new sustainable initiatives, Busst says. “As a business association we already collect the food waste from Arrowtown restaurants and with help from Michael Sly we turn it into Arrow Gold – a mulch for our local beech tree planting days.” Autumn leaves are also collected.

Council staff say early indications are that the majority of the savings - $29, would come through not landfilling the district’s organic waste, and that reduction had already been built into the $83 costs.

Busst says the anticipated rates increase would be near or on a par with the current cost to have your garden waste collected privately.

Lake Hayes Estate and Shotover Country Community Association chairperson Anita Golden says while she loves the concept, she’d also like to see the end product turned into something usable. “If it’s composted in Alexandra it should be put back into our district so that the circle’s complete.” Her concern is the reduction of the red bin collections to fortnightly if the proposal goes ahead. “That’s a long time if we have family and friends visiting.”

Golden says done right it’s a great idea, but a number of residents may not use their green bin and with rising cost concerns may question if it’s worth the $83. She’s looking forward to getting more details.

Council senior waste minimisation planner Sophie Mander says more than 50 percent of this district’s current red bin rubbish is estimated to be a combination of food scraps and garden waste that’s all going to landfill unnecessarily. “That’s why we’d be able to decrease the frequency of the red bin collections if green bins are introduced,” she says. It’s definitely anticipated that under any processing arrangement with the Central Otago District Council that the end product would be made available back in this district, Mander says. “That’s our strong intention and it’s really important for any food scraps or garden waste to go back into the soil to benefit gardens in our own district.”

More residents are now home composting, but the data shows that more than 50% of waste could go in the new green bin which is why the council is looking to truck this to Alexandra, she says.

The biggest volume of organic waste in local red bins is food scraps and as a community we really need to get that out, Mander says. “The majority is uneaten food and kitchen scraps, which is producing biogenic methane emissions and that’s the greenhouse gas that we’re trying to reduce.”

She says it’s really important that if and when the council proceeds with the proposal that the community is fully engaged.

The council hasn’t yet procured any services, so anything is still on the table, however, the CODC option is the most preferred in the business case. Public submissions will be called for in this year’s Long Term Plan consultation, but the council will begin discussions with the Central Otago District Council, she says.

Meanwhile, residents are encouraged to compost.

NEWS IN BRIEF

Strong opposition to Project Manawa

A council hearings panel which heard some 30 of the 178 submitters to details surrounding its proposed Stanley Street Project Manawa civic offices deal last week had its work cut out to find too much support.

The councillor panel of Lyal Cocks (chair), Melissa White and ‘Ferg’ Ferguson are now in deliberation after hearing concerns from the local business, tourism, arts and cultural and residential communities on the two consultation topics surrounding the proposal. More than 70% of those heard were in opposition.

KiwiHarvest seeks volunteers to launch a Food Rescue Rider service

KiwiHarvest reduces the negative impacts of food waste on our environment by redistributing excess food. A new service is planned called, the Frankton Food Rescue Rider using their new cargo style e-bike supplied by Chargeabout Queenstown and funded by the Council’s Waste Minimisation Fund to collect food from cafes and bakeries around Frankton starting from the depot in Five Mile.

KiwiHarvest is looking for regular local volunteers who can give up a couple of hours to complete the food rescue rides every second Monday, Wednesday or Friday. Alternatively, a local business could provide a volunteer as a staff volunteering option. Staff get the satisfaction of contributing to both reducing food waste and will see first-hand the benefit of the food when donating it to the local recipient charities.

Queenstown Airport will pay QLDC an interim dividend of $4 million

Queenstown Airport is off to a strong start to the current financial year. The airport, released its half year report last week, announcing an interim dividend of 5.3 million, of which $4 million will go to Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC). QLDC is the airports major shareholder holding 75.01% of the airport’s shares. Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC) revenue and profit for the first half of the financial year were up 10% compared with the same period the previous year.

More than 1.264 million passengers passed through the airport in the past 6 months to 31 December 2023, an increase of 3.3% on the same period last year and very close to pre-COVID numbers.

Queenstown Airport Chief Executive Glen Sowry also confirmed good progress had been made on other key areas of focus, including longterm planning, the terminal upgrade programme, and projects to improve resilience, customer experience, and operational efficiency.

Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

The NZOpen is here again and the very best thing about it is that we can have yoga on the lawn tennis courts at Millbrook instead of in the cramped little fitness room. It’s SO lovely doing yoga outside and our teacher even made a rainbow appear last year - he really is magic! Do try the magic again this year, Mark. Actually there is another very good thing at the NZ Open - you can have a go at the CLOSEST TO THE PIN competition (pin is a fancy golfing word for hole) -and you could win $5000. All you have to do to win the $$$$ is to make a donation to our excellent Wakatipu Community Foundation and you get two goes. I just read the rules, and you can enter as many times as you want, so hurry along to the 14th hole on the Remarkables Course and try your very hardest.

There were so many weddings and parties and whizzo things happening last weekend. I went to the 50th birthday party of PATAGONIA Queen Lorena - it was spectacular and her loving husband Alex cooked the best seafood paella I’ve ever had. Her mother made sensational empanadas and after having eaten more than is wise, suddenly not one, but three magnificent cakes appeared. Alex is setting the bar VERY high for other husbands and I’m not naive enough to imagine my husband will suddenly produce any cake at all, let alone one of these great glories.

And NZ’s greatest glory, Milford Sound, has a huge body of “experts” deciding on its future. I can’t believe anyone could think that letting cruise ships with their thousands of passengers come into Milford is a good idea. Haven’t they noticed what happened with the Costa Concordia? It took forever to clean up that one, and it’s in a highly populated and already polluted part of the world with all facilities nearby. How would Milford Sound ever cope with one of the inevitable dramas? Can’t they just let it stay pristine? There’s even a rumour about a big theatre for cultural shows for the cruise passengers. Ahem. Any “cultural” show that is just for tourists anywhere in the world is usually unspeakably crummy. When NZ was the guest nation at the Frankfurt Book Fair, the “cultural show” was cringeworthy. The pavilion was so stunning that there were massive queues even to get into it - the theme was “While You Were Sleeping” and the whole room was dark like being under a NZ night sky. All the media praised the space and silence of the pavilion and slammed the show as “ethnokitsch”. Couldn’t agree more.

Cruise ships aside, some big boats are fabulous and we took our daughter in law and our 3 years old granddaughter on the Earnslaw to Walter Peak for lunch. It’s VERY expensive (and a lot of that is to do with the way RealNZ is trying to minimise its impact on the environment) but the food was excellent and we all loved the sheepdogs and shearing and gardens and we’d forgotten just how much fun the whole day is, especially the singalong with Kate on the boat. Now our little one is back in Japan and our house is still littered with wands and crowns and tiny shoes - I miss the chaos!

And for anyone of the fairer sex (sorry, chaps!) don’t forget that it’s time to enrol or reenrol for Impact100. If you want to help this fabulous community, there’s just no better way to do it. 100 women (actually many, many more than that enrol in the Wakatipu) all donate $1000 each and then local groups apply to win the money for their cause. We vote on the ones we like most and we make a HUGE impact for these groups. I know it’s meant to be about philanthropy, but it’s just as much a way to meet new and fabulous friends and learn a lot about our wonderful part of the world.

Southland on the move – Infrastructure and resource management in the fast lane

All of us rely on infrastructure in our everyday lives. Having highquality, modern and resilient infrastructure drives economic growth, boosts productivity, and enhances our way of life. It is the foundation of a successful economy.

Yet New Zealand has a significant deficit, which has become worse thanks to the last government’s economic mismanagement. An Auditor-General report last year into Labour’s spending highlighted how cavalier and reckless Ministers were about committing billions of tax payer dollars to projects without the required due diligence being done.

The National-led Coalition Government will do things differently. We are committed to getting multi-generational infrastructure built up and down this country, and have already begun work on a National Infrastructure Agency as part of our 100-day plan.

The landscape of infrastructure and resource management in our Southland electorate is also shifting gears. On 2 February, the Government announced proposed changes to resource management laws which promise a fast-track consenting one-stop shop regime for major projects that will benefit our region’s economic future and environmental well-being.

The new regime aims to streamline approvals for crucial infrastructure, unlocking opportunities in our region. It will allow for faster construction of roads, bridges, and energy projects, and boosting jobs and regional development.

The regime will consist of a new fast-track process contained in a standalone Act, with its own purpose statement focused on economic development. The full details of this Bill are being worked through by Minsters now, and the aim is to have the Bill introduced into Parliament by 8 March as part of our 100 Day Action Plan. I am also seeking input from the Queenstown Lakes District Council on what they see as priorities for the infrastructure in this area that I can convey to relevant Ministers.

The Government will further restore council ownership and control of water assets to give much needed clarity to the local government sector by repealing and replacing Labour’s controversial Three Waters legislation.

It’s clear the previous government’s approach of removing community control of water assets and prescribing co-governance was hugely unpopular and proposed a one size fits all approach to water services delivery.

The Coalition Government will instead implement a new regime which recognises the importance of local decision-making and flexibility for communities and councils to determine how their water services will be delivered in future. We are committed to addressing the water infrastructure challenges that are jeopardising our nation’s health and prosperity and driving up costs for households across the country.

We will do this while ensuring a strong emphasis on meeting rules for water quality and long-term investment in infrastructure.

Building infrastructure is a key to growing the economy, and that matters because it’s only with a strong economy that New Zealand can reduce the cost-of-living and interest rates, lift incomes, and afford the public services you deserve. Delivering infrastructure will be at the heart of this National-led Government.

Neki Patel first NZ rep on International Sports Chiropractic Federation

Renowned Queenstown sports chiropractor Neki Patel is now one of just nine chiropractors worldwide to sit on the International Federation of Sports Chiropractic (FICS) executive board and heads to a three-day board meeting in Portugal this July.

Patel, who’s been chiropractor to legendary All Blacks, top professional golfers, and Ice Blacks stars during the past 25 years, has been appointed as New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific Islands’ representative on the prestigious governing body.

FICS is charged with leading the direction of sports chiropractic worldwide, how sports chiropractors work internationally and how the profession works with the IOC (International Olympic Committee).

“Things change in the world so it’s good that we can come together as a profession, bringing that wealth of experience from chiropractors who’ve looked after top sportspeople to ensure we can all be world leaders,” Patel says.

For example, various countries have different requirements. FICS is based out of Switzerland and there it’s Swiss law for chiropractors to have been trained as GPs beforehand, he says.

“I’ve worked with some big sporting organisations in rugby and I’m still working with the PGA on the NZ and Australian Open, so I have lots of experience,” Patel says. “I started running concussion tests with the Stampede 15 years ago before they came into vogue, so I’ve had experience with many different sportspeople and love working with different professionals for better outcomes.”

He says he’s hopefully bringing “practicality and common sense and some Kiwi No.8 wire lateral thinking” to the board table.

FICS is all about ensuring equal access to sports chiropractic specialists regardless of whether teams are elite or not and he’s excited to have some of his Queenstown staff working with Cook Islands Football this year. Cole Mackie is travelling with the NZ Ice Hockey U18s when they compete in Istanbul. He’s worked with the Stampede for the last two seasons at national level and local men’s football and will now work with the Cook Islands under 19 Football team in Vanuatu.

Madison Hooper who looks after the local women’s football and ice hockey teams, will work with the Cook Islands U15 an U16 women’s teams in Fiji and Auckland, while former Queenstown Health chiropractor Natalie Blake will look after the New Zealand Ice Blacks in Bulgaria.

Patel himself will be looking after the Cook Island’s U16 boys’ team in Tahiti. Ex-President of FICS and educator Pete Garbutt, based in Canberra, will look after the men’s first team with the first outing in Tonga in March.

“We operate a multi-disciplinary and integrated model at my clinic which connects patients with their best outcomes so I’m also keen to share that at FICS as it works well.” Chaz Monahan, owner of OC gyms, will put together a programme and videos for Cook Island players to help with good technique to help reduce injury and educate. “We have some very smart people in all aspects of health in our area.”

Patel first began assisting with football locally when former NZ international and professional footballer Ricki Herbert established his Football Academy in Queenstown and he’s looked after the local men’s and women’s teams for the last 15 years. “This Cook Islands connection has all come from Jess Ibrom, National Men’s Head Coach and National Academy Director for the Cook Islands Football Association. It’s a work in progress and we’re hoping to share the medical experience gained from the Academy and our collective experience with the Cook Islanders,” Patel says.

He will once again lead the health team at the NZ Open at Millbrook from February 29 until March 3.

He says there has been a shift in focus in health in recent years with people not wanting to take pharmaceuticals, opting instead for massage, nutrition, chiropractic, physiotherapy, and acupuncture.

“Queenstown’s an incredibly active society. We work hard and play hard. We produce sportspeople at high levels here and in Wanaka,” he says. “We’ve dominated ice hockey and have an amazing athletic, healthy society, elderly people skiing, tramping, biking. People want to avoid long-term pharmaceuticals, look after their bodies, and be educated on how to keep those machines working well,” Patel says. “We must keep the machine running well while trying not to let the marbles leave the jar as we age and that’s all about prevention and maintenance of ourselves.”

Jackie Bristow and Barry Saunders - A cool Kiwi music collaboration

Two New Zealand musicians have joined forces to release “Good Miles to Go,” an Americana-roots style of song. Barry Saunders, singer and principle songwriter for Kiwi icons The Warratahs, and Wānaka-based Jackie Bristow have collaborated on their debut single and will hold a release party at picturesque Kinross this Saturday. Bristow spent 17 years in America and has carved out a niche for herself between Wānaka and Nashville, Tennessee, while Saunders has his roots deeply embedded in New Zealand’s music scene. They connected after Jackie was unable to return to America during the Covid-19 lockdowns. She admired Saunders’ work with The Warratahs and a friendship soon developed, and not long after came the music. Their partnership has seen them tour around New Zealand, but the song will be their first collaborative single together. The song was recorded in Greytown, which is where Saunders hails from. They decided to launch the single at Kinross as it was the same place that they played their first show together and they both really just love playing their and in this beautiful region.

“One of the really big silver linings of Covid and me being back in New Zealand was connecting with Barry musically and building a friendship,” Bristow says. “We’ve been working together and playing shows around the country, playing really nice arts festivals and things like that, and actually, our very first gig together was at Kinross. That’s why it’s really nice that we’re playing there to launch the single.” The song was written by Saunders and produced by Bristow and aims to encapsulate the essence of their musical journey. Bristow has described the song as not just a song, but as a milestone in a journey together – one that promises to be as captivating as the landscape that inspired it. The release of the single is just the tip of the iceberg as the pair hope to record an EP later this year. The reception to their teaming up has been great from their respective fans and has also resulted in new fans who have discovered the pair as they play various festivals.

“We’ve received very positive feedback, and we get a very good reaction at the shows. Our mutual fans – Warratahs fans and my fans – love us together. I think there’s a real great mix in our voices together, because I have sort of a sweeter voice and Barry’s got a bit of a raspy voice, so it does lock in really nicely together. Then our material works well together and appeals to a similar audience – American roots singer-songwriter music, I guess you’d call it, with a bit of country in there.”

The show will be a celebration and the release party for the single where the pair will play a mix of each of their songs including some duets before the single is performed. It will simply be two acoustic guitars, one harmonica and two voices filling the halls of the venue.

“Good Miles to Go” will be available from Friday 1 March and can be found at jackiebristow.com. Bristow and Saunders will launch the song at their concert at Kinross this Saturday 2 March from 5pm – 7pm.

Tight 5 -John Reynolds

With a creative reputation spanning three decades, John Reynolds is the artist New Zealand turns to for works with a mischievous punch. He also has profound, and often political, things to say using both words and painted symbols, and has an expressive output that stretches beyond mark-making into sculpture, installation and site-specific outdoor works. John’s deeply curious way of viewing the world is evident in his work rich with literary, religious, art historical and architectural allusions, ranging in scale from the intimate to epic.

When did it all click?

There were a number of pivotal yet haphazard events in childhood which l imagine tipped me precariously, inevitably, onto the path of a life in art. One vivid early memory was my first brush with perspective. As a shy six year old l recall an evening at my grandparent’s kitchen within the sprawling grounds of the then Porirua Mental Hospital. Dr Hart, my grandfather, was resident superintendent of this psychiatric facility. One evening, while sitting self-consciously in my pyjamas at the dining table, my grandfather abruptly called for paper and a pen, and with a rapid sweep of lines demonstrated to me how a simple two dimensional drawing of a ship could be magically given perspective and volume with the mere addition of a few lines. It was a sleight of hand. And electric to me, as l already felt more at home with drawing than with conversation. And certainly l understood drawing as personally meaningful, ultimately as powerful as language, a lesson made slightly more dramatic given the context.

In your practice are there any major concepts you find yourself coming back to?

For me: How to make a painting? This could be extended generously to how to make an artwork? This conundrum haunts all projects and endeavours. A theme which also percolates across projects, is the need to communicate an authentic idea of human frailty.

Do you have a process for collecting and selecting which words make it onto the canvas?

Words and text. Dumb shoutouts and viral phrases, weaponising nonsense, neologisms and happy cliche. Mindless slogans, banalities, cryptic asides, cussing, absurdity, whimsy, and the everyday obscure. I filter the potential terms and phrases, which l fall upon through reading or conversation, in lengthy lists in the Notes app on my device (beautiful term that!). There the phrases float in a mundane purgatory before either rejection, or making the cut and appearing written in metallic silver pen on small coloured canvases in an ever growing series titled, Acronyms, etc. Strangely, the work makes itself now, l just have to occasionally pay attention and collect the texts like sweeping leaves on the driveway.

What’s your dream project?

At any given point, the dream project is the one l’m struggling with. However, my one large unrealised dream project remains my proposal to repaint New Zealand’s naval warships in day-glo or fluorescent pink or green camouflage patterns - an intense ‘visibility’ instead of implausible ‘stealth’. I await the call…

Do you have any specific rituals or habits you engage in before you start your practice? Do you have any specific rituals or habits you engage in before you start your practice?

The boundaries between daily life and studio practice becomes increasingly blurry as time goes by. Nonetheless certain banal rituals usually prefigure studio time. For me the necessary consumption of exactly three strong espressos prior to then entering the studio clutching a large mug of herbal tea… And inevitably, in a form of dumb magic, l tend to slink quietly into the studio as if determined to come in under the radar, and to not panic the resident ghosts of contemplation, dream and speculation.

ART WORKSHOPS

GEOFF WOODHOUSE

Headed for the country

Growing up as a city boy in Pakuranga, Auckland, Geoff Woodhouse doesn’t seem the most likely candidate to study veterinary science. However, a deep passion to help living creatures, inspired by his quite eccentric, animal welfare activist, vegetarian grandmother, won over.

Excelling at school, Geoff became Dux of Edgewater College. He also discovered track running, setting some Auckland records including a junior 1500m time at age 14 that stood for 43 years. He also represented Auckland nationally, netting some placings.

Geoff says it was his maternal grandmother south of Raglan who instilled the care for animals. “She was quite an inspiration, kind of whacky, a vegetarian since 1920 which was unheard of then, and a big animal welfare advocate,” says Geoff. “She ran the New Zealand branch of Beauty Without Cruelty which made face lotions and cleaning products from vegetable oil, and avocado face masks. “She was about four decades early, very resolute in her belief,” he says. “We thought she was slightly off-piste, but it was amazing how her philosophy became so real and inspiring.”

A farm visit at eight also planted that seed – “the smell of hay, feeding out from a Land Rover, blue skies, such a contrast to our life”.

A straight-A student, Geoff delayed preferential entry into Med School to jump straight into the second year of veterinary science at Massey. It was a nerve-wracking ride. “My first lecture on animal behaviour the very stern lecturer said, ‘You’re either competent, or incompetent in which case you won’t proceed to third year’.”

“We were mainly handling farm animals and for me as a city boy it was so scary. I was just happy to successfully hold my chickens upside down and put them into cages.”

Vet students had a reputation for enjoying themselves and at ‘Halfway Day’ in third year the whole university closed to adjourn to a paddock for fun and games. “There might’ve been a race involving alcohol, eating, and running. It wasn’t my finest quarter mile,” he smiles.

Experience on the job with real vets was invaluable. “Those glimpses stay with you for life.”

He quickly learned to become an anaesthetist, surgeon, radiologist, pharmacist, mathematician, communicator and businessman all in one.

“When you start off it’s like an insurmountable wall and you think you’ll never get over it.” Quiet observation became key.

My Life Story

His first bitch spay was a big deal. “That’s a highly underestimated and risky surgery, especially in big, deep-chested dogs. Mine was a very old, German Shepherd and I was 22. Terrifying!”

His first job at Central Vets in Alexandra was great with a lot of “trial by fire.” As a new graduate Geoff got dealt to by an angry cow during pregnancy testing in an unkempt yard of wild cattle. “She broke through the race like matchsticks, chasing me 20 metres to the edge where I did a complete somersault over the fence and just escaped her hot breath,” he grins. Geoff discovered multisport in Central Otago, taking a year off to train for the Xerox Challenge Multisport Challenge from Cape Reinga to Bluff. He competed in the Coast to Coast before locuming in the UK and riding through Europe with friends to the World Mountain Bike Championships. After a Post Graduate Diploma in Anaesthesia and several years in Auckland he and wife Karen returned to the UK for seven years before bringing their three kids home to Central Otago.

In 2004 they opened Remarkable Vets at Arrowtown – a big step.

By 2005 Geoff was starring on a vet reality TV show, Remarkable Vets, after local TV producer Phil Smith came in with his pet and had an idea. That ran weekly for two seasons. “That was certainly outside my comfort zone at the start.”

There’s never a dull day. Geoff was called to Paradise during shooting of the Prince Caspian movie. “I wandered into the forest and was met by the stunning scene of 12 Spanish Conquistadors riding towards me in the mist. I’d walked onto the set. Fortunately, filming had finished.”

Later that day he was hovering dangerously 2m above ground at high speed in a Robinson helicopter trying to dart tranquilise a farmer’s prize stag that had wire around its antlers – “real cowboy stuff - not me at all!!”.

A vet for 37 years, with three clinics and 30 staff, the passion is still alive, wife Karen always his mainstay during years of night call outs.

Out of the worst scenarios come the best experiences, like a middle of the night call to save a calving cow in lousy weather in the UK. “You’re negotiating all the obstacles and challenges, then there’s that unbeatable feeling driving home in the sunrise.”

“Our cause is helping people and animals. It doesn’t get better than that.”

NUESTRA

VOZ
