The first 100 days After receiving the highest number of candidate votes ever in this region, I am looking forward to reciprocating the confidence placed in me by being a strong voice for our electorate within the Coalition Government. As National get going with the newly-formed Coalition Government partners Act and New Zealand first, we are looking forward to making great progress with our first 100-day plan. At the election, New Zealand voted for change and put their trust in National, Act and NZ first to help navigate the country towards a prosperous future. So, we have wasted no time in announcing 49 actions to deliver within 100 days to kick-start the process of improving New Zealanders lives. As promised during the election there will be a strong determination to see Government focused on rebuilding the economy, easing the cost of living, restoring law and order and delivering better public services. Infrastructure is a big issue in the Queenstown-Lakes region and it is a focus for this Coalition Government as it starts the work to establish a National Infrastructure Agency. The National Infrastructure Agency will have a focus of coordinating investment into infrastructure. There will be a focus on creating a long-term pipeline of projects that will enable central Government to partner with local government to ensure success in regions like ours. This Government will repeal the Spatial Planning and Natural and Built Environment Act and introduce a fast-track consenting regime to make it easier to build the infrastructure New Zealand needs. Infrastructure is critical for economic growth and higher living standards. We are going to start the work required to enable more houses to be built by implementing our ‘Going for Housing Growth’ policy as well as making the Medium Density Residential Standards optional for councils. Going for Housing Growth will unlock land for housing, reform the Infrastructure and Financing Act to reduce red tape for developers and incentivise local councils to deliver more new housing. A shortage of housing, and in particular, rental housing has been a significant issue for Queenstown and the Coalition Government will be making policy decisions to amend the Overseas Investment Act 2005 to make it easier for build-to-rent housing to be developed. The Coalition Government has announced quick actions to improve New Zealand’s public services, which have fallen off a cliff in the past six years. We will re-introduce targets for the health system and lift educational performance by ensuring primary and intermediate schools are teaching an hour of maths, reading and writing from start of 2024. New Zealand faces a number of challenges, and you can have confidence the Coalition Government has both the team and the strategy to address them. Joseph Mooney, Queenstown’s MP (Southland constituency)

Catch the gondola into town? By Paul Taylor

Gondola manufacturer Doppelmayr is proposing a cable car system carrying up to 3000 passengers per hour to help solve Queenstown’s transport problems. The company, which has installed gondolas at Skyline and the region’s skifields, last week put forward 10 places in New Zealand it believes would benefit from urban aerial cable cars. For Queenstown, the gondola would run from Queenstown Airport to Frankton and into the CBD, departing every 48 seconds. Travel times would be 20 minutes, faster than taking the bus or car, with no chance of getting caught in rush hour congestion. Doppelmayr’s plan would see the gondola go through a tunnel to avoid the jets landing at Queenstown Airport but it still expects the cost to build and operate would be “substantially lower than alternative off road options”.

Page 2

“I think it’s a cool solution for Queenstown and would love to see it happen,” she says. “Our road corridors are so narrow, and so difficult to make bigger, that we will eventually have to find what we call an ‘off-line’ solution [off the roads].” Forbes says cable cars would fit well into our landscape and work for locals and tourists. “But there’s a huge caveat, which is when it comes to ditching the private car, I don’t know how effective it will be. “We now have a rudimentary bus system, which I’m proud of, despite it’s problems, and even though we have a healthy population, who love their bikes, they don’t want to use it for their commute.” Forbes says the next generation, the current teenagers, are much more open to alternative modes of transport, especially electric scooters and bikes, as well as buses. “They can’t drive, so it gives them freedom from their parents. That’s who we need to focus on, and connect up our trail network so they can get around.”

This summer, it’s replacing the Shadow Basin chairlift up The Remarkables skifield. The total cost of the project is $23 million. The company has installed cable car systems in mountain destinations around the world over the past 130 years, including urban solutions.

Resource consents could be another issue, if the proposed gondola travels over people’s houses, past their windows, and funding is always an obstacle.

Otago Regional councillor Alex Forbes investigated the potential to use gondolas as mass transport systems, while on holiday in La Paz, Bolivia, in 2017.

“I suspect it would have to be publicly funded and still think Queenstown needs a visitor tax to fund infrastructure for the numbers we have.

“Funding models are huge, they are difficult,” Forbes says. “People talk about public-private partnerships, but I’ve yet to see one that’s really successful.

“But if we put our minds to it, we can overcome problems, even funding, because the money is there, it’s just a matter of how we access it.” Both Otago Regional Council and Queenstown Lakes District Council have the potential of off-line solutions in their long term plans. Porter Group proposed a gondola from Frankton up to the Remarkables skifield a few years ago, with the potential to carry on into town, and is attempting to find a funding solution. In the meantime, urban transport company Woosh is planning a pilot project of its pod system in Remarkables Park, which allows 4-8 person pods to connect to both tracks and an overhead system.

Doppelmayr gondolas are used around the world

Doppelmayr New Zealand CEO Garreth Hayman, meanwhile, says the business is focusing on Auckland and Wellington initially.

Much of Queenstown’s development in recent years has been along the Southern Corridor, where there’s still several subdivisions being built and planned

Frustration boils over consenting delays By Sue Fea

“Massive” delays and a perceived stalling of the development process, particularly engineering approvals, are being blamed by frustrated Queenstown property development professionals and contractors for driving up land prices and worsening the housing crisis. Some say developer clients have even pulled the pin on planned subdivisions, frustrated at fighting lengthy red tape delays and Queenstown’s getting a reputation as one of the worst places in the country for consenting delays. Council bosses say many delays are due to applicants not providing enough information which can then delay their consent process for some months. They’re disappointed at the criticism when staff are under so much pressure and working extremely hard to process what will be at least another $1billionplus worth of construction this year. (See sidebar for full response) However, resource management consultants, surveyors, engineers, and earthworks contractors say they’re tearing their hair out with the unreasonable delays, especially to gain engineering approval, so that title can be issued on much-needed sections. Established consultants and contractors say the consenting systems are inefficient, costly and time consuming. “I’ve never seen it this bad,” says one long-time planning consultant. Most don’t want to be named in case of retribution and further delays for their clients at council level. “Development companies are at their wit’s end trying to get people to look at their projects. It’s incredibly slow,” he says. They say the delays are stretching for “months and months” in some cases. It’s pushing development prices up and developers are “getting nervous” amid rising interest rates. “It’s putting them off proceeding,” he says. “Some sections are not being released and this is why. It’s having a direct impact on the availability of housing.” The more it costs to hold the land the more that increases the section price. “You’d think if there’s a housing crisis the council would do everything in it’s power to make those sections available and streamline its consenting processes to be more straightforward, quicker and more efficient,” he says. “Apparently, it’s pretty bad around New Zealand but we’re at the worst end of the scale.” Queenstown resource management lawyer Graeme Todd, who represented the council for many years, has practised locally for more than 40 years and says the delays are the worst he’s ever seen. “I don’t know what the problem is, but it seems that there’s generally an inability within the council and some council consultants to make a decision.” He’s recently had a developer client pull out of a planned 17-lot subdivision, after appealing the council’s decision, and despite suggesting reducing the

lots to five, he was told it would take four months for council staff to verify if they agreed that was within scope. “My client wasn’t prepared to wait that long given there was no certainty.” That’s just one example, he says. “We have significant delays on all sorts of issues and matters that have been declined. The council will say people aren’t doing things correctly, but the council could streamline its processes to make it simpler,” he says. Technical reports on applications are constantly being peer reviewed, prompting further delays, and Todd says it’s the clients who pay significantly increased costs for those delays. “There’s no question it’s become significantly more difficult to get anything done in this district and professionals and clients fear consequences if they speak out.” He says the holding costs on land are becoming “prohibitive” because of the delays. “It’s systemic throughout the processing of applications, not just one problem. These applications need to be processed in an efficient and pragmatic manner.” He says he’s raised his concerns with council management to no avail. An established local developer questions how many like him can’t complete subdivisions because of a lack of council infrastructure. He says it’s time for a serious look at service delivery performance and development delays due to council infrastructure not being available. He’d like to see an independent review with timelines and reasons for delays. “Some would say these are signs of an under resourced or unworkable culture - almost a broken system,” he says. “The reason we have a housing crisis is because we don’t have the infrastructure in place – planning or engineering, to allow proposed subdivisions to be completed. It’s been under stress for a long time.” He estimates probably 1000 lower priced sections, such as the areas to the North of Jacks Point, aren’t available, because of an “onerous” consenting process. “It’s been prolonged to the point where it’s badly affected the number of residences being built,” he says. A long-time earthmoving contractor says the delays are costing clients “massive money”. “They can’t get their titles issued in time. It’s the single biggest detraction from investing here.” Developers are telling him the delays to get sign off are just getting worse and worse and it’s probably happening nationally, all due to regulations. “Every report has to be peer reviewed, whether it’s a postage stamp or full-blown geotechnical report, virtually everything,” he says. “We’re talking months and months of pointless delays. There’s no drive to get housing stock to the market, no sense of urgency and cooperation, just piling on the bills,” he says.

Council responds to consenting delay claims As a small council working through “a massive amount of development” the Queenstown Lakes District Council’s staff are under a lot of pressure and working hard to turn process the masses of applications within the required timeframes, general manager planning and development David Wallace says. In defence of strong criticism from those in the industry about what they call “massive delays” in the consent process, Wallace says over 90% of resource consent applications have been processed within the statutory timeframes during the past four months, and currently 92% of building consents. The criticisms are “very disappointing” given how hard his staff are working to keep up. “We’re all after the same thing. We certainly want to try and facilitate more housing,” he says. However, the council has to ensure that solutions put in place now don’t create problems later on. QLDC has the fifth highest consent volume of all New Zealand local authorities and is a relatively small council, he says. “For the past two years we’ve issued building consents, many preceded by resource consents, with a total construction value each year of more than $1billion. That’s predicted to be maintained or increased this year,” Wallace says. “This is an incredible amount of development for this relatively small district, and it is considered we are performing well in the circumstances.”

Wallace says staffing constraints, as experienced by other councils in the region, haven’t helped. “But we are achieving a significant amount and always working hard to improve.” There’s been a big improvement in engineering acceptance timeframes, which took 22 days to process from January, but only 14 days from June. If the council accepts sub-standard engineering designs that can lead to failure of assets potentially leaving ratepayers to foot the bill, he says. If designs are non-compliant these matters have to be raised, and this can take time due to resourcing constraints felt throughout the district. However, he accepts there’s been some delays due to the council’s peer review process, adopted in 2015. “Unfortunately, there’s a national shortage of expertise in this space so it does take time to review the assumptions made and systems designed to ensure they work when we experience significant rainfall events, which are unfortunately becoming more frequent.” The council appreciates it must also be difficult for developers to engage expertise in this field, but experience shows the reviews are required. “Without them we would have accepted systems that would not have been fit for purpose and led to flooding of surrounding areas,” he says. “We are working to streamline this process, but it’s required to ensure people are protected from flooding.”

Council staff face a huge variation of developments, often significant complex, and the work is completed as quickly as possible given the resources available, he says. “There are generally very limited delays in the time it takes for the council to process resource consents when we have the information required to do that,” he says. Applications with the council for some months are generally because they don’t always include all the information required. He says the key to faster processing is for applicants to work to ensure complete and accurate information is provided with applications from the outset to ensure efficient processing at this very busy time. The council’s building consent process did see some delays from June, due to significant changes to building consent requirements in May that resulted in a glut of applications submitted prior. However, inspections currently have only a two-day lag time which is a fast turnaround in a constrained environment.

Daredevil’s world-record motobungy at Nevis By Paul Taylor

Australian motorbike stunt performer Robbie Maddison has claimed the highest moto bungy jump in the world off the AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand Nevis Bungy. Maddison took a 50 cc KTM motorcycle off the platform, free-falling 134 metres for approximately 8.5 seconds at the Queenstown site on Friday morning. He beat his personal world-record achieved in 2011 of the longest motorbike jump at 115 metres – but vertically at 134 metres.

Beating fellow top-three finalists Rumpus Machine and Fan Club, Powder Chutes wins a $7000 cash prize allocated to music equipment, an album release or studio recording time, with an additional $3000 going towards their chosen secondary school music department or community music facility. With the prize funded by AJHBNZ, all three finalists also receive $1000 worth of AJHBNZ experiences. Alien Weaponry band members say it was hard to decide the winner, with each group having their own unique sound. “Massive congratulations to Powder Chutes for taking out the 2023 Thrash More Fear Less competition!!!” the band members say. “While it was such a close call to judge the competition, we felt that Powder Chutes encapsulated “Live More Fear Less” to a T. We were blown away by their wicked technical ability and song writing as well as their energy and passion.

Maddison was the first person ever to do a motorcycle bungy off the Nevis Bungy. “I live for insane experiences,” he says. “I’m buzzing from that experience! “Considering something like this has never been done before, it was epic to be a part of! “You have to be careful with the weight of the bike, especially with such a height, but the team at AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand did all the work behind the scenes to ensure the jump was safe. I had the family here to watch too, which was awesome.” Maddison, in New Zealand to perform at the 2023 Freestyle Kings Tour, is one of the world’s greatest freestyle motocross riders who has built a significant career on achieving several world records, completing daredevil stunts and pushing the boundaries. From surfing his dirt bike on the ocean in Tahiti to the incredible New Year’s Las Vegas motorcycle jump to the top of the Arc de Triomphe, he is one to achieve the seemingly impossible. AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand co-founder Henry van Asch says: “Robbie embodies a life that’s about living more and fearing less, and we’re delighted to support him achieve the world’s highest motor bike bungy at the Nevis Playground in Queenstown.” Meanwhile, Wānaka band Powder Chutes have won the inaugural AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand (AJHBNZ) Thrash More competition, judged by Los Angeles-based te reo Māori metal band Alien Weaponry.

My Life Story

by Sue Fea

KIM WILKINSON

He’s just what the doctor ordered He was the friendly face of pharmacy in Queenstown for 32 years, greeting everyone from insect-ravaged, sunburnt tourists to worried mothers of sick babies and elderly collecting prescriptions, all with a warm, broad smile. Kim Wilkinson was the third-generation pharmacist to own Wilkinsons Pharmacy, which still bears the family name at the bottom of Queenstown Mall. Kim’s grandfather Gordon Wilkinson took over the pharmacy there in 1921 after buying Hotop’s Dispensary from Lewis Hotop. Dad Stan, a longtime Geraldine pharmacist, managed from afar after Gordon’s passing in 1950 until Kim and wife Marie returned from overseas, moving to Queenstown in 1984 when they took over the business. Both South Canterbury raised, they’d spent five years travelling, Kim gaining hospital and retail pharmacy experience, including two stints in a private Saudi Arabian hospital. The 1960s were idyllic times growing up in Geraldine. Kim represented South Canterbury at hockey, and then Otago while at university. Some good teenage parties were had in rural Geraldine woolsheds and things at times got a little out of control during the ‘Unicol Rocket Wars’ while at university in the mid-1970s. He and Marie started dating one summer while both home from university and Kim then scored an internship at Wellington’s well-known Eddie Fletcher Pharmacy in Lambton Quay with Peter Olsen. “He mentored me. He was breaking new ground in retail pharmacy in the 1970s, importing top line fragrances.”

Kim and Marie on Australian holiday – 2019

He and Marie then worked their way around Australia, backpacking through South-East Asia into Nepal and India before landing in London where Kim started at the new Cromwell Private Hospital.

days in the Nubian Desert and came across some nomads who drew us a map to the Red Sea in the sand. “There was no communication, so it was a bit concerning.”

Two locums in the Saudi hospital relieved the Irish pharmacist “desperate to get home for a drink once a year”, Kim says. It catered for the thousands of construction workers building the grand five-terminal King Khalid International Airport. “We were always advised not to go into the centre of Riyadh on Fridays because of the public beheadings.”

Back home via the US and Kim and Marie bought Stan’s share in Wilkinsons Queenstown. “It was pretty special to continue that legacy,” he says.

Six months in a campervan around Europe included several nights camped beneath the Eiffel Tower arches while renovations were underway. A six-week camping safari through Africa turned into three months when fighting broke out in Southern Sudan forcing their truck party to divert through Central African Republic, Zaire and Uganda. “We got lost for three

They’d quickly made a success of the business, expanding twice, taking over next-door shops – the toy and book shop which they relocated to O’Connells and Marie ran as Toyworld, then Chocolate Cottage which they relocated to Camp Street. However, their biggest challenge came in 1999 when the 100-year record floods inundated the pharmacy with metre-high water. They managed to wade in and get 95% of stock to the upstairs storeroom, operating from a temporary space in Athol Street, then trestle tables on concrete for nine months while the rebuild was completed. There have been lighthearted moments like the methadone programme patient who popped in to say they should secure the skylight in the roof as he’d climbed in overnight gaining access to the stairwell, but fortunately not the storeroom. “Sure enough, his boot prints were all up the walls,” laughs Kim. Like many prominent Queenstown businessmen Kim’s done his time in heels, taking out the Winter Festival Drag Queen crown one out of his three years competing as a very convincing ‘Kimberley’. He’s also impressed as a dab hand at delivering babies when second son Henry arrived in record time in the bathroom at a concert held in a local private residence, before the ambulance could find them. Kim was guided by two elderly women on walking sticks who happened to be there – fortunately one was a retired midwife and the other a retired doctor. All was well. Kim’s been at the coalface of the Queenstown Chamber of Commerce affairs for decades, an early co-founder serving two terms totalling 13 years on the board – he and Marie recently honoured as life members. He’s clocked countless volunteer hours on The Mall Retail Association, Frankton Kindy Establishment Committee, as chairperson of the Queenstown Primary School Board of Trustees, Queenstown Golf Club Board, Lakes District Hospital Foundation, and as Wakatipu Presbyterian Church property and finance convenor. While retired from business, he still serves on three of these.

Kim and Marie travelling on safari through Africa in 1984

Throughout the years Kim and Marie employed 250 staff and forged lifelong friendships. “They were all great people, and we still keep in touch with many of them.”

CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

Queen farts, best bread, rabbit carpet…. I make myself notes for this column during the week and sometimes it takes me a while to work out what these cryptic notes mean. After much headscratching, I remembered the farting queen is our own Sally Stone’s latest children’s book THE QUEEN OF FARTS which is out any minute. I’ve already begged her to do a talk and a signing at Dorothy Browns before Christmas so will keep you posted. As for best bread, I was in Wolf Cafe and a handsome man greeted me with a big hug and a “Hi, Miranda”. It was the Australian king of Sonoma sourdough bread (although he and his Greek wife and 4 children live in Athens) and during lockdown, he bought the land next to our house. Lucky us, having him as a neighbour although it might be a while before he lives here - his land is currently occupied by hemlock and rabbits and no house. I didn’t know that factory-produced food like his bread can be brought into NZ totally legally. Now I’m begging all my friends to bring some back. He told me that when his Greek friends ask what he misses about not being in Australia, he says “going to New Zealand”. Our driveway looks a bit motheaten at the moment. We had the rabbit population almost under control this winter, but this spring has been a total bonking bunnyfest for the few that remained, and the tiny little bunbuns that have resulted from this monumental exercise are now big, gawky adolescents looking for thrills. They aren’t the smartest animals, and even though I’m not aiming for them, they are surprisingly good at running straight under my tyres. I’m hoping that by summer we’ll have wall to wall fur carpet the whole way up the drive. I’ll feel very posh. HUGEST cheers for Julia Strelou who put together a brilliant fundraiser for Central Lakes Family Services and Women’s Refuge. Some very brave women stood up and told their terrifying stories of domestic abuse - hard to believe that one in three women experience it, and that’s not just in poor areas - local police will tell you it’s the same all over New Zealand, Queenstown included. Despite the sad topic, it was a lot of fun and there was some fierce bidding on the auction items. I bid on what I thought was an auction prize to have some upholstery done. Luckily for me, Heather Rae told me it was actually an upholstery course. Anyone who knows me would die laughing at the thought of me learning to cover a sofa. I was well outbid on that one, thank goodness. It was especially thrilling that our own Jennifer Belmont won the top gong for the Otago 2023 Inspirational Women Awards. We are incredibly lucky to have her here, making such a big difference to our community. We were invited to dinner at Glenorchy up at Mt Earnslaw. It’s a bit of a drive from here but SO beautiful. We had the perfect still and sunny evening to drive up with the very entertaining Bob and Sue Berry, then a full moon and virtually empty roads all the way home. A delicious meal cooked in Jill’s tiny kitchen in the tiniest cabin with 10 of us snuggled up tight together made for a great night. If you haven’t been to Glenorchy before, it really is well worth the trip - so many beautiful walks and most people can afford a night at Paradise - there are a whole lot of rustic (very!) cabins to stay in. Do NOT forget your camera or your battery charger (there isn’t electricity in many of the cabins and in fact, I doubt there’s even phone reception).

An English version of NUESTRA VOZ is available on lwb.co.nz

Arts+Culture Queenstown artist releases new book by Jess Allen

Local author and illustrator, Laura Shallcrass, has just released her latest children’s book, Here is Hare. It’s the fourth children’s book for Shallcrass and is an introductory search-and-find board book for little ones, featuring an array of animals including a Kunekune. Shallcrass grew up in Wellington and is now based in Queenstown after trying out a few places in Aotearoa and abroad. She spent a few winters in America and Canada, and lived in Hawke’s Bay and Auckland previously. Her family settled here in 2010, which is when she started her career in children’s books – prior to this she was working in graphic design. She enjoyed drawing growing up, but “never felt good enough” to study art, so decided to look at design. “I decided right at the last minute that I was going to go to design school and managed to pull that together and ended up majoring in illustration, which I really love,” Shallcrass says. “After graduating I did a whole lot of other jobs, graphic design stuff and working in shops. When my oldest son was born, I had a bit of time to play around with art a little more and ended up having a few exhibitions locally in Queenstown and a few wider, throughout the country. All through this, I was getting into illustration as a career, but it was really challenging. I kind of ended up in it through exhibiting fine art stuff.” It was around the time of the Christchurch earthquake when Shallcrass noticed a lot of families moving to Queenstown and kids who were upset about “this really awful thing that had just dramatically altered their lives.” She’s quite passionate about mental health, having dealt with her own struggles with anxiety, so wanted to write a book about mental health, using some of the tools she’d learnt about in her life – to pass them down. “It was a pretty huge experience, which was really, really cool. I ended up going on to write two more books in that series, featuring Hare as the main character in all of them. After doing a few more of those books, I think that the trilogy is complete – there’s three books, Hare & Ruru, What Colour is the Sky?, and last year we did Hare & Kunekune’s Moonlight Mission. I kind of feel like Hare is this complete character now, they started off as this sweet little anxious being and now I feel like they’re a complete, fully formed Hare and I feel ready to leave it there with those ones.” Shallcrass has had lots of feedback that people would like to see a book for little kids from her. Many are drawn to her beautiful illustration style, which she prides herself on the time and effort that she puts into presentation, so it was a natural progression to create something for younger ones. She says people are sometimes hesitant to give her books to smaller children for fear of damage. “I’ve had quite a lot of feedback from customers that they’d love a board book – something a wee bit more durable for the most enthusiastic readers and the young age bracket. So that’s where this book came from – it’s all the same characters from the previous three books, but it’s very much a pared back story. It’s really simple, a bit of a peak-a-boo story, looking for all the individual animals – a search-and-find.” In 2020, her first book was released, Hare & Ruru, which went really well, winning some awards and receiving positive feedback. It follows the story of a Hare, who struggles to find quiet even in peaceful places and goes on a journey to find a solution to this. It was aimed at anyone suffering from noises, anxiety or loud feelings. Her first three books have been translated into te reo Māori and German, and are all illustrated children’s books, but the latest edition is aimed at a younger demographic.

Shallcrass’ illustrations have been inspired by the flora and fauna in our region. She describes the ferns and trees in the area, rocks, the Arrow River, lupins and colourscapes as influences. She also loves the semi-rural backdrop of Gibbston Valley with its expansive sky. Here is Hare and Laura Shallcrass’ other works can be found at laurashallcrass.co.nz

COMMUNITY NOTES Queenstown’s Community Advocate Amanda Mulqueen By Elizabeth Zizik, Volunteer South

Amanda Mulqueen, a long-time resident, knows Queenstown inside and out. Born in Mosgiel, Amanda moved to New Caledonia aged seven, immersing herself in a vibrant, multicultural environment. She grew up in a tiny village and is fluent in both French and English. After her final high school years boarding in Dunedin during the 1980s, she relocated to Queenstown, where she has resided ever since. Amanda has built a bustling household with her partner and three boys. Their home has also been a welcoming haven for home-stay students and the family enjoy embracing diverse cultures and nationalities. Her volunteer journey began in 2020. Amanda owned and operated Habebes cafe, and was determined to help her team who were on sponsored work visas navigate the challenges they faced during the pandemic. She started volunteering with the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) and became deeply involved in the organisation. Amanda was elected to the Board and then Chairperson, marking her first foray into community governance. She was recently elected to the CAB National Board as one of two South Island representatives.

Amanda herself has experienced the housing crisis, having lived in her car and overcrowded flats during her time as a hospitality worker. However, she remains optimistic about the future, and credits initiatives such as the Queenstown Lakes Housing Trust and the involvement of the Mana Tāhuna Charitable Trust in addressing housing issues. Amanda is passionate about her work and takes pride in helping others. She finds purpose in her volunteer work, which complements her psychology diploma studies and future aspirations in counselling and legal roles. When asked about her biggest challenge, Amanda mentions the difficulties faced by young people who encounter legal issues, emphasising the need for court support and translation services. She believes that communities need to work together to address systemic issues rather than relying on “ambulance at the bottom of the cliff” approaches. “I encourage others to consider volunteering as a way to find purpose and give back to the community. The value of meaningful work goes far beyond financial gain and everyone’s contribution, whether paid or unpaid, is so important and worthwhile.” Volunteer South engages and supports both tūao volunteers and volunteers involving organisations and community groups in the Southern region of Aotearoa, New Zealand. For more www.volunteersouth.org.nz Amanda Mulqueen

Her knowledge of the Queenstown community has made her an invaluable asset to the town and the CAB team. “I was drawn to the diverse and varied nature of the role, being able to provide immediate help to people in need. “Living and working in central Queenstown, I have witnessed the town’s transformation and understand the issues that migrants and residents face.” “Many seek advice on immigration, tenancy, employment, and legal matters, which can be more challenging for people with limited English proficiency,” Amanda says. Amanda acknowledges that these issues have persisted for years and require long-term solutions. Over the past year, Amanda has fostered collaboration with external agencies and focused on building a network to address these issues and credits CAB for its ability to connect people to a range of resources and organisations.

Caring for the critters – Wildlife Savers to the rescue By Sue Fea

Luella Sharpe and Freya Davies’ obliging parents will collect injured or unwell creatures and they’ve done this many times. “We’ve saved a bellbird, a Harrier Hawk that ate a rabbit with lead poisoning,” Freya says, proudly. Their daring night rescue in ski gloves with Luella’s parents, saw the unwell hawk sleeping in the family bathroom in the cat cage, cosying up to the underfloor heating. After liaising with DOC and Kiwi Birdlife Park, which was going to take the bird in, unfortunately a vet’s check meant it had to be put down. “And we’ve helped a sparrow and lots of sick hedgehogs,” Luella says. One hedgehog just returned for the third year. They’re all marked individually, named, and documented. They’ve even been saviour to a baby hedgehog at school, smuggling it out in a hoodie after the teacher told them not to touch it. The girls have saved and nursed ‘Billy the Bellbird’ back to full health and freedom after he flew into Luella’s mum’s car. Regularly in contact with the Kiwi Birdlife Park for guidance, they nurtured it for two weeks until its tail started to grow back. Since launching two years ago this passionate pair has fundraised, selling baking door to door to purchase a Night Cam surveillance camera for their backyard hedgehog house. This is checked regularly as late as 11pm by nightie-clad conservationists. As many as 30 hedgehogs regularly congregate, feeding on cat food - the perfect safe haven for any that are ailing. The best part for this pair is “seeing animals happy and free after being injured” and “setting them free to fly or run away”.

Calling all creatures great and small. Kelvin Heights’ ‘Wildlife Savers’ are armed and ready to rescue - their carefully designed, home crafted posters now delivered to mailboxes throughout their neighbourhood.

Southern Lakes Sanctuary project director Paul Kavanagh says it’s so encouraging to see such kindness and empathy in kids that age and how much they care for the environment and wildlife. “I love hearing about things like this. These are our budding young conservationists of the future, and we need more like that,” he says.

Santa returns to Minus 5 By Jess Allen

Future Bars’ Minus 5° Ice Bar will host Santa for their 12th annual fundraiser this weekend. The event raises money for Wakatipu Plunket by taking donations for a photo with Santa surrounded by his natural frozen environment. Since the first event, approximately $25,000 has been raised. This year, in addition to the photos, there will be face painting at Steamer Wharf for a gold coin, with these funds also going to Plunket. You will have the choice of taking your own snaps or letting the friendly team take a picture, which you can then download later. Future Bars Kristel Maroszek loves helping to organise the event each year and is looking forward to the weekend. “Plunket have a great lot of volunteers that have pretty much been doing this for the last decade or more and it’s just something to bring out all the families,” she says. “A lot of people in the community have been coming to it every year to get that fun photo in the Ice Bar with Santa and just add it to their collection.”

The bar will be closed while Santa’s there, only open to those getting photos. Donations of $5 per child or $10 per family will be collected on the day with 100% of the proceeds going to Plunket. There’s also a colouring in competition – there will be a table set up outside the bar so children can complete their entries. “We’ve all got kids of our own here so it’s really important that families are looked after. We love being part of this and Plunket have been great to work with. We love seeing kids getting stoked on it, and it’s a really unique way to see Santa, especially here in the warmer climate,” Kristel says. Pop down to Minus 5° on Saturday, 9 December, or Sunday 10, between 10am and 2pm to meet Santa in the icy environment and to support a great cause.
