Somewhere for community organisations to call home Queenstown often gets a bad wrap for taking better care of its visitors than its locals, but for many years, we have had a number of charitable organisations providing vital support to those who live and work here. Organisations such as Plunket, Happiness House, and Kiwi Harvest though, are too often forced to focus their energy (and limited resources) on finding secure, affordable and accessible premises from which to deliver the services so many of us rely on. To address this issue, former Councillor John MacDonald formed the Whakatipu Community Hub Charitable Trust in 2019. The Trust sought to investigate establishing a co-working space where community groups could share resources - material and human, to enhance community access to support. Fast forward four years and the Trust has secured a long term ground lease of a 1.2 hectare site from QLDC and has preliminary concept designs for a five building Hub on a centrally located and neighbouring Queenstown Event Centre and the Five Mile Shopping Centre. There will be plenty of car parking and easy access via public transport and cycleways. Discussions are underway with Iwi, Central Government and education providers to house key services that support the cultural, financial and emotional wellbeing of those that choose to live and work in Queenstown.

The new multi-million dollar Salvation Army center in Frankton opened on Saturday morning with a large turnout from the community in attendance. See story on page 4

So why do we need a Hub? There is no shortage of groups doing good in this community but there is a dire need for secure space for them to operate. These groups - Senior Citizens, the Community Foundation and Citizens Advice Bureau for example, could maximise the potential of their services if provided a fit-for-purpose space, at an affordable rental that their clients can access easily. Even government services struggle to find offices in Queenstown. Our local businesses, large and small, would benefit enormously from centralized government services such as Immigration NZ, Waka Kotahi (NZTA) and the various health sector services that support our staff and their families.

celebrate with us this festive season!

To date, the Trust has funded the work required for the feasibility study, securing a 35 year lease for the land and the preliminary architectural designs that will provide both surety to community groups looking to make the move and attract funding. In order to progress the project, the Trust needs to raise $32M to complete Stage 1 (comprising the first three buildings) and a further $18M to complete Stage 2 (the remaining two buildings). While we are engaging with community funders we will be relying on support from the wider community to make the Hub a reality. This is Queenstown’s opportunity to prove we do care about our locals, our workers and the families that make this resort town a community Hamish Wilton, Chair, Whakatipu Community Hub Charitable Trust

Young people lose everything in colleagues went out on Facebook yesterday November 8) devastating Lower Shotover fire (Wednesday for any donations of men’s By Sue Fea

A couple of young South American hospitality workers in their 20s and their Indian flat mate have lost everything but the clothes on their backs after a devastating fire ripped through their Lower Shotover home on Tuesday afternoon. Frankton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Paul Halsted says the fire was raging and well involved by the time all three Wakatipu volunteer fire brigades arrived, the first of which was on the scene within 12 minutes of the alarm being raised. It was too dangerous to enter the large barn-like garage structure which was believed to have a two-bedroom flat contained within it, but thankfully the occupants were safely outside and unharmed, Halsted says. Between 35 and 40 volunteer firefighters with four fire engines, a large tanker and two support vehicles fought the blaze to get it under control. “It took significant resources, and we used just over 48,000 litres of water,” he says. “The fire was out within two and a half hours, but firefighters were on the scene for about four hours. “The structure was deemed unsafe, so firefighters had to fight from outside the building only.” The South American couple, Maia Holz and Carlos Zanlungo, who both work at Swiss-Belhotel Coronet Peak, were at home at the time and smelt smoke. They, and their flatmate, Sandeep Dahiya are extremely upset having lost everything they own in the fire, including laptops, passports, money, and clothing. Holz and Zanlungo were at home at the time and smelt smoke. “Everybody was staying well and truly away from the fire when we got there which is what they should’ve done,” Halsted says. Swiss-Belhotel International Australia and New Zealand vice president operations and development Patrick Laybutt says it’s just devastating for the young people and the whole thing is very unfortunate. The company and colleagues are supporting them locally and they’ve been offered meals and accommodation in one of the company’s two Queenstown hotels until they find new accommodation, however, it’s thought they have found somewhere to stay for now.

and women’s clothing, food, and household items to help support the young couple. Laybutt says these are to be dropped off at Swiss-Belsuites Pounamu Queenstown in Frankton Road where the couple will collect them from because it’s more accessible to town. “They’re being well looked after for food and accommodation at present, but obviously all of these items will be needed so any donations are gratefully received,” he says. Swiss-Belhotel International Devastated flat mates from left Maia Holz and is setting up a Givealittle Carlos Zanlungo both from South America and page to help them and will be Indian Sandeep Dahiya outside the ruins of their donating money to kickstart the Lower Shotover home fundraiser. Fire and Emergency NZ assistant commander for Queenstown Lakes Nic McQuillan wouldn’t speculate on the possible cause of the fire but he didn’t believe it started in the flat within the barn structure. He didn’t yet know if the building had smoke detectors. The fire safety investigation had been delayed due to the safety of officers entering the structure. However, local fire investigators will go in once it’s safe to establish the cause of the fire, he says. “We urge people to have an escape plan in the event of fire and take care when storing lithium-ion batteries, and always have smoke alarms installed,” McQuillan says. The Salvation Army’s new Frankton community centre

New $10m Salvation Army Centre opens By Sue Fea The Salvation Army’s new $10m community centre at Frankton opened its doors with a grand launch on Saturday, November 11. The much-needed expansion has been almost 20 years in the pipeline and corps officer and community ministries director Lieutenant Andrew Wilson says they’re super excited. It’s taken years of fundraising at national and local level. “It’s been a privilege seeing this rise out of the ground,” he says, after construction began a year ago.

Affordability has been the biggest issue facing clients here and is always an underlying issue, Wilsons says. “That’s largely housing now and the cost of power and food. People are feeling the pinch.” Salvation Army staff first began talking about the need for a new Frankton centre back in 1995 and its national kaumatua Rangi McLean, along with the heads of the Army in New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa and Tonga, all based in Wellington, will be in Queenstown for the celebration.

A great mix of local community social services have been secured as clients with the Queenstown Housing Trust and Central Lakes Family Services moving into the dedicated 300sqm of commercial space upstairs. Te Kura Correspondence School is hoping to take the remaining space as its local base, while Salvation Army services will be spread across the 500sqm ground floor. This includes community ministries offices and a 50sqm multi-function room available for community hire for training or interest groups. There are also 16 on-site carparks. All Salvation Army services, will be available at the new Frankton centre, with Gorge Road retaining the Family Store and other essential services. However, the new site will have a smaller boutique second-hand clothing and homeware store and Wilson says there’s been huge inquiry about that. Unfortunately, space limitations mean any donations of wares still have to be dropped off at the Gorge Road Family Store. Its community ministries programmes will continue to be provided from both Gorge Road and Frankton.

The new multi-million dollar Salvation Army center in Frankton opened on Saturday morning with a large turnout from the community in attendance

Staff will be working out of both centres providing budget and financial mentoring, a food bank, counselling and life skills programmes like SPACE, an early parenting programme, as well as Building Awesome Whanau. “We will move around so as to be easily accessible to our clients,” Wilson says.

More than 400 people were invited and Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu kaumatua Michael Skerrett officiated with Army leaders at a dawn blessing of the new site. Queenstown Lakes District councillor Esther Whitehead represented the council and local MP Jospeh Mooney, who was unable to attend received a guided tour through the new centre prior to the office opening.

The Army’s new 136-seat church auditorium in the complex is already in hot demand with local community and arts and culture groups wanting to hire it, as is the intention. “We’ve always planned to make that available to host small-scale productions, music events, conferences and the likes.” “We recognise that we’ll be catering to two very different communities in town and in Frankton.” His team is working together to be available to all sectors of the community. “Traditionally, families have been based in Frankton, west and south of Queenstown, and many migrants in Fernhill or Queenstown Hill. However, that dynamic is changing a bit as the housing crisis worsens,” he says.

A big celebration honouring all of those who helped make it happen will follow. “We really want to thank all those who’ve helped us realise this dream, like Cook Brothers, sub-contractors, and any funders who helped us get across the financial line,” Wilson says. “A lot of hard work has gone in and often those people are the unsung heroes, so we wanted to honour them with a special showcase.” That will involve performances by Salvation Army and Queenstown cultural groups, including the Sally’s famous brass band and waiata group, Remarks Dance Crew and a music group yet to be revealed.

New Queenstown Community Hub designs unveiled By Sue Fea

Architectural concept designs for the proposed two stage, $50m Whakatipu Community Hub to be based in Five Mile, Frankton were revealed to prospective stakeholders last week (November 2). The Whakatipu Community Hub Charitable Trust received expressions of interest from 17 potential occupiers, who’ve been involved in the design process to ensure the proposed five-building complex is fit for their purposes. There’s been big demand from the local social service sector and the Trust also hopes some government agencies may take up residency space in the first, $32m three-building stage. Once completed the five separate buildings will each have a floor area of 900sqm, subject to the Trust raising the necessary funds. The first three buildings will offer 2700sqm of office space, available at a considerably subsidised rate. Project administrator Sharon Salmons says some of the larger organisations need space for up to 30 staff, so it’s been vital that interested parties are part of the design stages. Last week’s workshop was their first opportunity to see the proposed designs.

Some of those who’ve expressed interest include Plunket, Happiness House, Baskets of Blessing, Kiwi Harvest, CABand Wakatipu Senior Citizens. Wakatipu Community Foundation and the Queenstown Lakes District Council Welcoming Communities team are also interested. “We’re now engaged with Government Property Group to ascertain if there’s an appetite for government departments to take space,” says Trust chair Hamish Wilton. Salmons has done extensive research, visiting similar projects around the country such as The Kollective in Tauranga, The Lofts in Christchurch, picking out the best of their ideas.

The designs include a common community space available to local clubs for meetings or events, spacious outdoor gardens and playgrounds. “We’re keen to provide lots of open-air spaces where people can sit and use the internet, like an outdoor library,” says Salmons. “It’s really important that we future proof this in the design so that it’s suitable for generations to come.” “It will be a big game changer for Queenstown, something that’s been needed in this community for a long time,” she says. “The community hubs I’ve seen, including the one in Wanaka, have attracted more community organisations than expected. There’s been a lot of cross pollination of ideas and resources – agencies working together and connecting. That’s the idea of a hub,” Salmons says. Towards link

It’s hoped showers and E-bike charging stations can be incorporated to encourage active transport and pedestrian accessibility. The next phase is attracting funding, Wilton says. “We’re well engaged with core funders like Central Lakes Trust and Community Trust South. We’re also ascertaining whether any government funding is available.” The Trust is working with several potential occupiers who may be able to make a capital contribution. While Queenstown Lakes District Council doesn’t have funds it can contribute but has provided the 1.2ha site behind Countdown for a 35year peppercorn lease. “We will also be asking the wider community to support this much needed facility that will provide a support system for those who live and work in our area.” “The best-case scenario would see work starting by September next year, building through 2025 and completing stage one in 2026,” Wilton says. “However, this is fully reliant on securing funding to complete the project.”

Loads of people are living in cars many of whom have been fined

Housing Crisis – Hope on the worker housing horizon By Sue Fea

A proposal for individual unit style worker accommodation that could potentially supply 540 Frankton rooms is awaiting resource consent approval and, if successful, building would start late next year. No.1 Hansen Rd Ltd is already well underway with stage one, a 168-car park development on the same site, opposite Queenstown Events Centre. The car park component of the development is designed for out-of-town holiday homeowners to store their vehicles and is handy to Queenstown Airport, with a good portion of the parks believed to have been pre-sold. Project manager Steve Savery says the car parking stage of the development is scheduled for completion during the first quarter of next year. It’s being built in parallel with a 15-lot commercial subdivision on the site, with lots varying from 3000 to 5000sqm. An application is currently before the Queenstown Lakes District Council for eight standalone buildings to provide about 540 rooms for workers, in groups of shared units, university style accommodation. It’s a Mason & Wales-designed concept and once consent is finalised the conglomerate of Australian developers and their New Zealand partners can proceed to the design phase. Building could start within a year once the concept is approved and the developers are looking for an answer by Christmas. There’s strong local backing for the project from Queenstown Airport Corporation, council, and local iwi. Chamber of Commerce CEO Sharon Fifield says the chamber has been advocating for projects like this to happen for worker accommodation for some time. “That would be great if that goes ahead as it’s a good spot, close to public transport which is important,” she says. “It’s encouraging to see these types of developments being tabled and I hope it works out as it’s exactly what the district needs, particularly for seasonal workers.” Meanwhile, Queenstown Housing Initiative founder Hannah Sullivan says she’s meeting with council housing staff on November 14, and will be proposing that council sets aside ‘Safe Camping Hub’ areas for those living in their cars. “Councils currently not distinguishing between freedom campers and people who are desperate to find somewhere to park to sleep for the night. These people are all working,” she says. “How do you prove that you’re trying to find a house when you’re up against 60 other applications at every viewing. It’s very demoralising,” Sullivan says. She, and employers, are concerned that rental housing situation is worsening as the town heads into summer when even more workers are needed. “It’s likely to get worse over summer.” “It’s a crisis,” she says. “People in this situation are always asking me questions and every time we’re told, ‘We can’t do that because of this bylaw or these regulations’,” she says. There are plenty of council car parks that could be used overnight, she says, and will be advocating that council allocate the Queenstown Events Centre car park for this purpose during darkness hours. “That’s not taking away parking from the public and they shouldn’t be ticketing people after dark,” she says. Other options include Frankton Beach, which has access to a BBQ, hot water and toilets, the Kmart car park where the bathrooms could be left open and the car park by Fernhill Roundabout. “A person parked at Frankton at the bottom of a residential cul de sac recently was fined $400. They can’t afford that as their work hours have dropped. There’s not really any support for these people,” Sullivan says. She knows of “loads” of people living in cars who’ve been fined. “My advice has been to try and get the fines waived.” “We’re told a key concern is that people in neighborhood’s won’t like it, but I did a survey recently and 75% to 80% of the 150 responses locally said they wouldn’t mind during darkness hours and that it was a brilliant idea.” Only 10% were unsure. Sullivan says she will be making the survey available online for another week or so, giving locals a month to respond and support those forced to live it rough. “We had survey responses from all sectors of the community - homeowners, retirees, and others in the community.”

Spinal Implant Breakthrough The mobility of a man with advanced Parkinson’s disease has been restored using an electrical implant placed on his lower spine, according to a study published last week. The patient was diagnosed with Parkinson’s over 30 years ago. The disease led to significant mobility issues, where he reported falling up to six times a day. Two years ago, researchers inserted a neuroprosthetic device in his lower spine to send signals to areas of his body showing weakness. The procedure corrected Gauthier’s irregular manner of walking and allowed him to go for miles at a time without falling. Parkinson’s is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the world, afflicting over 6 million individuals. The disease stems from the premature decay of dopamine-producing neurons in the midbrain. Insider

‘ChatGPT detector’ catches AI-generated papers with unprecedented accuracy A machine-learning tool can easily spot when chemistry papers are written using the chatbot ChatGPT, according to a study published last week. The specialized classifier, which outperformed two existing artificial intelligence (AI) detectors, could help academic publishers to identify papers created by AI text generators. “Most of the field of text analysis wants a really general detector that will work on anything,” says co-author Heather Desaire, a chemist at the University of Kansas. But by making a tool that focuses on a particular type of paper, “we were really going after accuracy”. The findings suggest that efforts to develop AI detectors could be boosted by tailoring software to specific types of writing. Nature.com

A monster eddy current is spinning into existence off the coast of Sydney Oceanographers describe the spinning water bodies as “eddies” – but they’re not the small eddy currents seen in creeks or rivers. Ocean eddies are enormous. They’re usually hundreds of kilometres across, up to 2km deep and can be visible from space. It turns out these eddies drive change underwater by spawning marine heatwaves. New research demonstrates the link between a warm ocean eddy and a record-breaking marine heatwave which struck off Sydney from December 2021 to February 2022. Now it’s happening again. An even bigger eddy is forming about 50km off Sydney. Estimates suggest this 400km wide beast holds 30% more heat than normal for this part of the ocean. Its currents are spinning at 8km per hour. And the temperatures deep underwater are up to 3°C above normal. If it moves close to shore, it could trigger another coastal marine heatwave. The Conversation

NUESTRA VOZ

An English version of NUESTRA VOZ is available on lwb.co.nz

‘Hometown Holly’ Shervey tackles biggest project yet By Sue Fea She’s definitely a case of smalltown girl made big with even bigger projects hopefully in the pipeline as Queenstown raised actor and screenwriter Holly Shervey tackles her biggest film industry role yet. She and actor director fiancé Emmett Skilton, both household names in Kiwi television and film, are currently working on a New Zealand dark comedy television series with Shervey writing the show and Skilton directing. Shervey is also developing the popular online Instagram comedy series she created, American ‘Millennial Jenny’, into a television series and once that’s been assigned to a network it will air to the international market. “It’s pretty hard overseas at the moment with the actors’ strike so our focus has been on developing the NZ show,” Shervey says. ‘Millennial Jenny’, has aired more than 70 episodes since 2019, some of which have gone viral with almost five million views on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. “I was inspired to create that after my peers and I found ourselves in similar situations as millennials and we’d hear our parents responding to us,” Shervey says. Prior to that was her ‘Auckward Love’ series, inspired by Holly’s own awkward dates. For Shervey, who trained through The Actors Programme at NZ Drama School in Auckland graduating in 2012, the big breaks began back in 2017 with a role in Amazon Prime’s ‘American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story’ in which she played Hefner’s bunny Teddy Howard. Shervey also played Zoe Carlson on Shortland Street on and off since 2018, rejoining last year for the 30th birthday special. There have been numerous other roles, including international feature film The Tank, which hit movie screens here this year. Filmed in NZ, the movie was written and directed by Scott Walker, writer, and director of Frozen Ground which he directed with Nicolas Cage.

It hasn’t always been easy to break into a highly competitive industry, says the granddaughter of former Cabinet Minister and Queenstown mayor Warren Cooper and wife Lorraine. However, Shervey, who was educated at St Joseph’s and Wakatipu High School, encourages others to give it a go. “There’s always a way. It was really tough until I started making my own work. There’s rejection daily in this business but it’s not too different to any other job. It teaches you resilience,” she says. “I learned while researching for Millennial Jenny that it’s something our generation doesn’t have enough of.” She says she’ll never run out of inspiration for her quirky, tongue in cheek twists on millennials. Shervey and Skilton are planning another production that’s just weeks away. The couple are marrying on December 9 – their third attempt after Covid disruptions forced postponement of their two previous weddings in December 2020 and 2021. An intimate affair surrounded by family and friends, Shervey’s bridesmaids are Queenstowners, sister Taylor and best friend from primary school days, Whitney Nicholls-Potts. “I’m very excited to have Grandma (Lorraine) and Grandad (Warren), who just turned 90, there. It means so much to me to have them with us on our special day. Grandma has made everything in life so much easier and more manageable.” Grandma was in attendance recently at Holly’s Queenstown hen’s party. “They made me do an obstacle course at “The Holympics” on the Queenstown waterfront, each obstacle representing a hilarious, yet tragic, event that I’ve had to overcome.” Wellington-raised Skilton, who acts and directs on their social media series, played Axl Johnson, in the comedy-drama, The Almighty Johnsons, and most recently had roles in Avatar: The Way of Water and American comedy series Young Rock, portraying Dwayne Johnson’s real-life college football coach, Ed Orgeron.

“It’s another step,” she says. “Each project establishes you that little bit more.”

Arts+Culture Glorious Choruses & Carols for Christmas by Jess Allen

English neighbours singing it down the road at various moments when something exciting has been happening. It’s one of the choruses that everybody will know.” The choir will also continue their commitment to showcasing talented young musicians. They will be welcoming back pianist Cameron Monteath, who placed third in this years Dunedin Concerto competition in May before performing with the choir and amazing the audience with his skill. This time he’ll be accompanying the winner of the first prize in that same concerto competition – cellist Boudewijin Keenan, who will be including “Vocalise” by Rachmaninov. Monteath will also accompany Edward (Teddy) Finney Waters, who will offer a powerful performance. He has sung as a soloist with the choir in the past, and will be singing as a soloist this time around in two of the carols. “Within the Christmas carol section of the concert, there’s one composer who is very well-known to choirs and his music is like the sparkles on the Christmas tree – everything is so bright and joyful. His name is John Rutter and we are singing one of his original compositions and two other pieces of his arrangements. Then there are other carols, which are French and German in origin, and we’re doing a German one actually in German, the other ones we’re singing in English.” The first concert in a series of three will be Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall on Friday 24 November. There will also be a concert at Lake Wanaka Centre on 25 November and Dunstan High School on 26 November. Tickets are $30 with all profits put back into the choir. You can get tickets from Alexandra, Cromwell and Wanaka Paper Plus, Unichem Pharmacy Summerfields, Life Pharmacy Wilkinsons, Antidote QT Central or Lakes District Museum, Arrowtown. Alison Frude

Cameron Monteath

The Central Otago Regional Choir will take the stage in Arrowtown at the end of the month for their second and final concert of the season – Glorious Choruses & Carols for Christmas. There’ll be well-known choral works, delightful Christmas carols and some talented surprise guest artists. Alison Frude is the accompanist for the choir and explains that all the funds from the concerts the choir puts on go back into the group. Their performances are in May and November annually, with a break between rehearsals over winter. With members from all over Central Otago, they practice in Cromwell as it’s a central base for everyone. Frude says that this year’s show is like Christmas meeting the Proms, and that there’s something for everyone. “Some of the music is very much like you would expect to hear if you were going to a Proms concert in Britain,” Frude says. “If it was a choir who are featured, they’d have various wonderful choruses of music, and that’s what’s going to happen this time, interspersed with some beautiful joyful Christmas carol music.” One song that Frude says most will know and sing along to is “Land of Hope and Glory” by Elgar – the original version, as opposed to the one the soccer fans sing. It’ll bring a touch of Last Night at the Proms to Arrowtown. “The thing that made me think of the Proms was when Richard, our conductor, gave us the music and revealed that we were going to perform the real version of “Land of Hope and Glory” and that is always fun on the final night of the Proms – the choir sings it and so does the audience. That may or may not happen this time, because the real version is somewhat intricate. It’s kind of been taken over by people across the UK as almost their second national anthem. I’ve heard my

My Life Story

by Sue Fea

PENNY WALLACE 0800 Penny

From dancing with the king to tending the wounds of celebrities, former Queenstown Plunket and maternity nurse Penny Wallace has enjoyed some high-flying days. These days she’s tending roses, but this adventurer has done it all. Born in post-war 1948, the daughter of a high-ranking Lieutenant Colonel and sought-after surgeon, Penny had an idyllic and privileged upbringing, rubbing shoulders with government officials in Wellington and spending family weekends at their Paremata beach-house. As a Marsden Collegiate prefect Penny was “demoted” for tucking into the Old Girls dinner wine. Despite the military-style Wellington Hospital nursing home regime with its meticulous uniform inspections, Penny loved the move. “My mother used to send me telegrams because she hadn’t heard from me.” Reprimanded again, this time from the matron after she and other junior nurses raided the Gentian Violet antiseptic to lighten their hair. Penny’s father was assigned aide-de-camp and doctor during royal family state visits. Her parents stayed at Government House, attending lavish cocktail functions and grand balls. Penny was handpicked to lead dance with then Prince Charles, aged 19. “He was as shy as I was.” Sailing to England on her OE, Penny landed numerous private nursing jobs, working for a prestigious St Moritz doctor tending to Aristotle Onassis, Stavros Niachos, America’s Kennedys, and other celebrities. Back in London she did a Cordon Bleu Cookery School course becoming a cook at the luxurious Glen Carron Lodge in the Scottish Highlands. “They took us to amazing castles and grand mansions for ‘fork luncheons’.” Delays sailing home on a cargo ship left Penny stranded in India for two weeks. She hitched and bused to Nepal before meeting the ship in Hong Kong – one of just seven passengers, the only female, dining daily with the captain. She arrived in Wellington for Christmas after almost five years overseas. Penny took a Mount Hutt skiing holiday with friends while doing her post graduate intensive care diploma. Seriously injured in a car accident on the skifield road, she herself was rushed to intensive care, taking six months to recover, and having to repeat her exams.

Penny enjoying her love of flowers

Friend Jill Egerton phoned inviting her to cook in her new Queenstown restaurant, Rump and Bun, which later became Upstairs Downstairs. “It was Queenstown’s first BYO restaurant and so much fun.” Husband of 48 years, Dardy Wallace did the restaurant cleaning with business partner John Guthrie. Dardy charmed her from behind the vacuum cleaner and while not great at vacuuming, he was the best skier on the mountain and had a yellow Lotus Europa sports car. “What more do you want?” grins Penny. She abandoned Art School to marry Dardy, premature twin girls arriving within a year, followed by George. No scans then. “Pat Farry did an X-ray and found two babies. I had my legs in stirrups at Southland Hospital and the neonatal specialist pulled his mask down and said, ‘Oh my gosh, Penny! I used to flat with you in Wellington.’” Penny completed a graphic design diploma and studied art as an adult at Wakatipu High School while raising the kids. She and Jocie Geddes launched Queenstown’s first creche to give mums a break, run by volunteers in St Peter’s Hall. It was the 70s and they got wrap from some local women who said children should be at home with their mothers. It grew, moving into the old Brecon Street Fire Station building. Penny became Plunket, district, and health nurse, covering a massive run from Makarora to Lumsden. ”When the weather was right, they’d fly me to the West Coast.” The hair-raising bus ride via gravel Glenorchy Road had her refusing to go back. “The farmers came and got me in their boats.” They were long days, Penny often searching rugged backcountry roads for homes. Her arrival was celebrated with a big country feed. 0800 hadn’t been invented. “I got calls in the middle of the night for help.” Babies were tied inside a nappy and hung on a hook to be weighed in the old Plunket Rooms in Beach Street. When the Henry Street centre opened, she started groups for Japanese mums and others far from home and after 20 years in that role, Penny and Toni Okkerse ran the maternity wing at Lakes District Hospital for 10 years. “We were full most weeks, delivering 120 babies a year in the early 1990s.”

Penny on the job in Queenstown in the early 1990s

Gardening, Heritage Rose Society, which has planted over 100 roses around Arrowtown, sewing, embroidery, patchwork, golf, painting, and until recently skiing, are her passions now. Never really time to retire.

Overcoming the odds Young Auckland pair strike business success locally By Sue Fea Good things come in small parcels, but in the case of Aku Hiku and Jack Varndell they start with them too. Ten months after the young Auckland pair, in their mid-20s, moved to Queenstown to start their own courier and transport business - Kaizen, they’ve already paid off their initial business loans and acquired a small local transport business. They now have their sights set on overseas expansion. “We were just two men and a van when we started late last year,” says Hiku, who’s first to testify that the odds of his lower socio-economic South Auckland upbringing were against him ever achieving his dream of owning a business. “I grew up in an underprivileged Māori home, the eldest of eight younger siblings still at home,” he says. “We didn’t have much so I had to grow up at a very young age and step up.” Despite evictions, power cut off and sometimes no food, Hiku says he still had an amazing childhood, sheltered from financial hardship by his parents. He’d quit school at 16 or 17 and was working towards a ‘dream career’ in the Army as a field engineer when a family crisis meant he had to work full-time to support the family. “I just wanted to make money to get my family out of their struggle.” He worked in logistics for warehouses in Auckland working his way up to supervisor, at one stage working 16-hour days in two jobs, six days a week, to clear loans he’d taken out to support his family. Getting rid of debt was non-negotiable and once Hiku had achieved that, 18 months of self-discovery saw him realising he didn’t need to “keep on with mediocrity”.

Active Adventures took home Supreme Business of the Year at the 2023 Queenstown Business Awards at Walter Peak High Country Farm on Saturday 4 November. The awards, which are put on by Queenstown Chamber of Commerce every two years, include 11 categories as well as the Supreme Winner. They aim to highlight business excellence in the region and hosted 200 businesspeople this year, celebrating the best in local business. Based in Queenstown, Active Adventures offer small-group travel experience all around the world, including here in Aotearoa, North America, Peru, Nepal and the Netherlands. From here, they coordinate more than 80 trips and most of their guests come from America. The judges commended the businesses impressive operation and guest satisfaction; that each customer is taken care of individually and personally. The team at Active Adventures picked up the Excellence in People & Capability award, and were finalists in the Excellence in Strategy & Business Solutions. Chief Executive Officer, Wendy van Lieshout, says that winning the People & Capability award was exciting as it’s a testament to how businesses look after their people and that receiving the Supreme Award was a shock for all. “We were very surprised to also win the Supreme Award, which is off the back of a few years of pretty tricky times, coming out of Covid,” van Lieshout says. “We did a very brave thing in the middle of Covid and acquired a business in America, because all of our guests come from America. With borders shut, it seemed like a good idea to acquire a business so that we could continue to run trips in America for those guests who were stuck with international border closures. It was a really gutsty move, considering we couldn’t go and see what we were acquiring or spend time with the people, but we pressed on and just had a really strategic plan to make sure that it was efficient and effective.”

A relative’s friend introduced him to Kaizen partner Jack Varndell, who was a New World business analyst and accountant in Auckland. Varndell, who’d come from a high-income family with strong values, was looking to take over some courier contracts in Queenstown. “We instantly clicked, and I moved down a month after him to start the business,” says Hiku. “In just nine months we’re like brothers. We share the same values and ambitions.” It hasn’t all been roses with their characters tested, Varndell bringing a strong Christian faith and sharp business acumen, Hiku sharing those values – his business strength in practical logistics and operations. Now operating four trucks, four vans and more to come, the pair now employs 11 staff, some of whom live in their rented Kelvin Heights property. They’ve already purchased one small local transport business, doubling productivity from 40% to more than 80% by adopting new practices and technology. That acquisition secured them a Grant Road depot while transport competitors unable to secure those have to be based in Cromwell. Kaizen is now delivering all over the Queenstown Lakes-Central Otago region with sights set internationally. Social conscience has been a strong foundation of the business and both young men are invested in helping their ever-expanding team grow, learn and develop. They’ve volunteered in the community, serving meals for those living rough. “If you can retain something from your wealth then you have something to give.” First to receive was Hiku’s family, most of whom he’s already moved to Cromwell for a better life. He’s bought a family home for them there, his mum settled and doing part-time work, Dad to follow soon with the last sibling. “I’m blessed to have good friends. All grace goes to the people around me,” says Hiku.

The risk paid off for Active Adventures as the size of the business ultimately doubled off the back of Covid, and van Lieshout is grateful to have a great team that helped to execute the coming together of the two brands. The business that Active Adventures acquired was called Austin Adventures. They’re a family business and van Lieshout notes that both businesses share similar DNA, which has proven to be critical in the successful bringing together of the two. “We had some really nice feedback from the judges about how our application stood out, and we are especially proud that we were up against such incredible big global Queenstown businesses, as well as really amazing small entrepreneurial Queenstown businesses. You don’t really get a sense of how you stack up against those peers until you enter something like this, because when you’re running your own business, you kind of run it in a vacuum. That was probably the most validating thing – to be set up against those other businesses and realise that we’re actually winning – it’s pretty cool.” For more information on the awards and to check out the full photo gallery, head to businessawards.queenstownchamber.org.nz

COMMUNITY NOTES Queenstown Marathon

Allanah Blackley is a winner at the start line By Sue Fea

They say, ‘no pain, no gain’, but Allanah Blackley knows that more than most. The 39-year-old Southlander has overcome some major adversities to push through and train for the NZ Sotheby’s International Realty Queenstown Marathon 10km event on November 18. More than 10,000 athletes are expected to take part in the popular event, now in its ninth year, with an influx of more than 20,000 people, including supporters, in town for the event weekend. Invercargill-based Blackley, who grew up in Winton, was never a runner, “not since cross country at school”, however, rehabilitation from a bad car accident in 2019 and a rapidly approaching 40th birthday saw her take on the challenge to run. After suffering injuries from head to toe in the crash, including serious head injuries that still limit her, Blackley was initially only allowed to walk for 11 minutes at a time and even that was difficult. She got to a point where she was determined to try and run after being inspired by friends who’d done running events. “I wanted to support my teenage daughter in her rugby fitness, and it turned into a new motherdaughter activity,” she says. They started running together in November last year. “I was doing 3kms to 4kms and then I had another car accident and at Christmas last year I couldn’t even walk around the supermarket. My legs abdomen and pelvis were badly injured.” In the first accident Blackley was stationary at a pedestrian crossing and hit badly from behind, the second T-boned at an intersection. “It was back to square one.” She’s also suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for 10 years and had to cope with major changes to her medication, due to the effects of that on her organs. Just to add another spanner into the works, Blackley had unrelated surgery in July leaving her bedridden for a fortnight, unable to exercise for six weeks. “I feel every month something’s happened and I’ve had to stop for a while and lost traction in my training and fitness.” “Even now when I’m running after a certain point my legs wobble. My brother said, ‘If you can run 7kms you can run 10kms,” she says. A fortnight out from the Queenstown Marathon 10km run an elated Blackley made the 10km mark and says her three kids – five, 10 and 13 have been a huge encouragement, running or scootering alongside. Regular passers-by always toot and wave to cheer her on. A teacher at her youngest’s school was inspired to run with her in March. They motivate each other and will drive to Queenstown together.

Allanah and her daughter having a bit of fun before their training run

Allanah’s arthritis has meant very painful knees at times, but she’s pushed through. “When I got to the 8km mark I just burst into tears,” she says. Ten days out from the event she says her run is already feeling easier. Blackley has already set her sights on the 32km Stewart Island event next October, and “maybe the half marathon in Queenstown”. There will be 88 countries represented in the entries line-up this year, which includes 1674 international athletes. A large chunk of runners will come from Canterbury – 2232, 1995 from Otago and 1626 from Auckland. Ages range from just five-year-olds to an 88-year-old, with an average age around 38, 58% female and 42% male competitors. A massive group of 700 volunteers will be on hand for the event and reigning women’s champion Hannah Oldroyd is back to defend her title. Men’s champion Daniel Jones hasn’t entered at this stage. The event covers four distances – the main marathon, half marathon, 10km run and kids’ fun run.

Night ‘n Day Rainbow Run What better way to say hello to summer than a 5km fun run while being bombed at five colour stations? Friends, family, school mates, tradie mates and flatmates get together, dress up and have a blast! The Night ‘n Day Rainbow Run is on at the Frankton Reserve, Saturday morning, November 25th, 11.30am. Thanks to several partner groups that have come together to make this awesome event happen. The colour stations will have plenty of enthusiasts who will all be on hand to bomb you with colour as you run or walk the course which includes a traverse over the historic Kawarau Falls Heritage bridge and a run under the new road bridge. The colour bombs are made from corn starch. The local Fire Brigade will douse you near the start of the run before you pass through the five colour stations. Night ‘n Day will be selling ice creams for a gold coin donation. Sport Central will have inflatables and play equipment with music for good vibes, so bring along friends and family to hang out, picnic, relax and enjoy the scenery and atmosphere. Night ‘n Day Rainbow Run tickets cost $10 per person or $30 for a family of four. Tickets can be purchased online via www.sportotago.co.nz or on the day, cash only. Any profits go to Sporting Chance, supporting children into sport.

THE

JOURNEY by Daniela Diaz Soto

This is my story My journey as an immigrant began in March 2018 when I arrived in New Zealand on a Working Holiday Visa. It was my last chance due to age restrictions, so I left it to fate. After graduating as a Journalist in Chile in 2005, I worked for over ten years in the news at Canal 13, one of the primary television channels in my country. However, after my departure, I had to decide what my next steps would be, so I decided to live abroad, something I always dreamed of since my adolescence. I still remember the immense excitement I felt when I first set foot in NZ. I didn’t know what adventure awaited me, but it would undoubtedly be something that would change my life. My first job was in Mount Maunganui during the kiwifruit season. It was physically demanding, starkly contrasting my desk job back home. This experience revealed unknown facets of myself, forcing me to adapt. During my Working Holiday Visa, I travelled all over the country and met people from all over the world. I stayed in Taupo, where I worked in a hostel in exchange for accommodation, and then moved to Wellington to work cleaning a school and in restaurants as a kitchenhand. I also had the unique experience of working in the Beehive kitchen for important official dinners, a memorable moment. As my time in Wellington was ending, my parents came to visit me. We travelled all over New Zealand, and I showed them the wonders of this impressive country. It was with them that I came to Queenstown for the first time, and after falling in love with the landscapes and the vibe of the place, I decided that this would be my home. For most of my years living here, I worked in supermarkets, restaurants and cleaning houses. I also took the challenge of learning downhill biking, an extreme sport that I never imagined I could do, but I pushed myself to learn new things, and this country has given me much of that. However, up to that point, I was not even close to getting a job related to my profession. This stage made me understand that as an immigrant, sometimes you must make a double effort to demonstrate your abilities, as it is like rebuilding yourself from scratch.

My first trip to Easter Island (Rapa Nui) - Chile 2022

In 2022, I obtained my residency and travelled to Chile to reunite with my family and friends after five years without seeing them, a situation extended by the pandemic. This reunion recharged me with energy, and I returned with a stronger desire to do what I love. This year, I started volunteering at the Citizens Advice Bureau, participated in events for Sustainable Queenstown, and began recording Calzones Rotos Podcast with a friend, a Spanish-language funny show focused on the Latino community in the world. I also contacted the editor of the Lakes Weekly Bulletin, David Gibbs, to suggest writing a column for my beloved Latino community in Queenstown, and he accepted the proposal with an open mind. This opportunity has allowed me to discover multiple life stories and connect more with Latinos and non-Latinos in this town. I was also invited to join the artistic collective Tart, an experience that reawakened my creative side. For the first time since I arrived, I understood the importance of building community and supporting each other when we need help or want to start new projects. My experience as a Latina immigrant has made me grow as a person and woman. I understood that I am stronger than I thought, that the language barrier can be broken when we dare to communicate without inhibitions, and that feeling lonely and missing our roots will always be present. Still, it unites all of us who are not from here. Being in New Zealand has also made me see the differences with Latin America, especially regarding safety and quality of life. But at the same time, I like to bring part of my culture, such as our warmth, joy, kindness, and solidarity. I miss my family and friends in Chile daily, but now I feel like this is my place. Coming from such a distant country in South America to this land has become an experience that changed my life forever. I learned that when you step out of your comfort zone, you open yourself to a world of possibilities and that It’s never too late to start anew.

Construction projects slow as costs rise By Jess Allen According to The Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment building and construction is one of the top contributors to New Zealand’s economy, and will continue with demand for residential housing continuing to grow. Post covid, while the pipeline grew the industry was impacted by supply chain disruptions and rising construction costs which particularly impacted the local Southern Lakes market. Construction data researchers Pacifecon released their South Island Market Watch report recently offering a comprehensive picture of planned construction. They have researchers based throughout the country including in the Southern Lakes region, who monitor and report on the health of the construction industry. “Post-election, we’re hearing more positivity. The feeling appears to be that change was needed and now people are getting into planning,” Sian Campbell, a researcher as Pacifecon says. “I am hoping this means that we will see more activity in the coming months including infrastructure projects, especially government ones, despite National wanting to show they are getting things done these will take longer to change, due to the pure bureaucracy involved.” Material Shortages dissipating Campbell also noted that material shortages have started to improve and are not the pressing issue they once were. Some material prices have come down, such as timber, and Campbell is under the impression that there was a bit of stockpiling occurring. “There isn’t as much building activity and people are now working through those stockpiles, so suppliers aren’t getting as much demand and are dropping prices though it’s not true for all materials.” Subcontractor shortages pushing local rates higher Shifting focus to Queenstown Lakes, Campbell says, “Building costs are still going up, mainly due to the cost of subcontractor labour especially in Queenstown and Wānaka.” One of the highest value projects in Queenstown that Pacifecon is reporting on is the $482m first stages for the Park Ridge mixed-use development. Carolyn Rennie is another researcher at Pacifecon, who focuses on the Queenstown Lakes District. She interviewed two architects in the region

to query and back up what she was hearing; she described that what she discovered during her research as quite unusual. “There’s very, very high prices, for builds, and Wānaka has outstripped Queenstown in terms of cost,” Rennie says. She also notes extra fees for newer compliance, which is getting passed on to the consumer. “All of this could change and prices could increase when the building consent changes, in the first half of next year – you need to be carbon neutral.” General build cost are currently higher in Wānaka than Queenstown with “everybody clicking the ticket”. It’s understood that this is driven mainly by subcontractors costs. Some tradies in Wānaka are also claiming higher margins, which gets passed along, all of whom add their own margin, before it comes down to the consumer to pay. While there doesn’t seem to be an increase in building or architecture companies going under in the region, it has been reported that the mix of projects is changing where architects were working 70% commercial and 30% residential, today it is closer to 50/50. Queenstown and Wānaka have among the highest building prices in the country. Some in the area have reported that the cost of building per square metre have jumped significantly and in some cases are double, what was already quite a steep cost in comparison, to the rest of the country. Project starts decreasing while values increase Compared to August 2022, the number of projects in the South Island pipeline has decreased by 10% and value has increased by 28%, which is in line with trends that the Pacifecon team have seen throughout Aotearoa as a whole. Canterbury and Otago combined make up 76% of the construction pipeline by number of projects and 77% of the value. Queenstown’s major project pipeline Some of what’s coming up for Queenstown in construction includes the $350m upgrade to the Queenstown Airport Terminal, which is currently waiting on council sign off. There’s also work underway on the 35-year Queenstown Town Centre Master Plan, including the arterial road, and construction that’s underway on many sites for the Gibbston Valley Resort & Golf Course.

NEWS IN BRIEF

Queenstown Farmer Carlos Bagrie wins prestigious global farming scholarship

Crowdfunding campaign seeks to raise $10,000 to protect native bird from rats

Food and farming entrepreneur Carlos Bagrie has been awarded one of the most prestigious accolades in global agriculture. The 2024 Nuffield Farming Scholarship was presented to Bagrie and three fellow scholars at Parliament in Wellington last week by Minister O’Connor. The Nuffield Scholarship is a scholarship awarded to leaders and innovators in the NZ primary sector. Bagrie – who co-founded retail food business My Food Bag and now owns Queenstown’s Royalburn Station with wife Nadia Lim – was one of only four recipients chosen for the elite scholarship after a rigorous selection process.

Southern Lakes Sanctuary, in conjunction with Forest & Bird Central Otago Lakes branch has launched a crowdfunding campaign to urgently protect the declining mohua/Yellowhead from an anticipated rat plague near Makarora. The campaign is seeking at least $10,000 via a Givealittle page, which will go towards 700 rat traps and bait stations in Mt Aspiring National Park. The approach comes as the conservationists prepare for an explosion of rat numbers thanks to a recent ‘mast season’ of native beech trees, where a larger number of tree seeds are produced. A mast season occurs every two to six years. Once the seeds have been eaten, predators turn to eating native species – it’s feared that mohua in Makarora could become extinct within a single season if extra measures are not taken.

Headlight Wins Community Contribution Award The award recognises organisations that have implemented initiatives that have had a positive impact on the community, and strive to generate outcomes that have a long term benefit for Queenstown. Headlight’s submission focused on how the team raised funds and built an innovative programme to bring mental health education to support the needs of local communities post-COVID. The efforts have seen nearly 500 people from priority communities take part in mental health education, which has directly increased mental health literacy across the community.

Council invites feedback on economic diversification plan A draft economic diversification plan developed by QLDC alongside local businesses and industry experts has been shared for public feedback. Queenstown Lakes District Councillor and local business owner Matt Wong said the draft plan, New pathways to a thriving future, seeks to support the diversification work already happening across the district and help achieve Council’s Vision 2050 goal of a resilient and sustainable economy offering a diverse range of career and income opportunities. The draft plan sits alongside the district’s regenerative tourism plan Travel to a thriving future and the Queenstown Lakes Spatial Plan. Together, these will form the economic development strategy going forward. To provide more insight into the draft plan, emphasise why diversification is important and how people can share their views, QLDC is hosting a lunchtime webinar at 12.30pm on Tuesday 21 November. Public feedback closes on 8 December with the final plan expected to be presented to Councillors in early 2024. Details including a webinar registration link can be found at https://letstalk. qldc.govt.nz/

Aurora Energy upgrading Queenstown electricity substation Aurora Energy is strengthening the local electricity supply by upgrading the Queenstown CBD zone substation. Work will start in 2024 and continue into 2025. “This substation supplies electricity to over 2,600 customers in the Queenstown and Glenorchy area. It also connects to substations at Commonage and Fernhill, as well as the Frankton Grid Exit Point where Aurora Energy connects to Transpower’s national grid,” said General Manager Service Delivery Richard Starkey. Before the upgrade gets underway, a new retaining wall is being constructed to ensure the long-term stability of the site. Upgrading the substation involves building a new control room and switchgear building, putting in new indoor 11 kV switchgear, and replacing the electrical protection and control systems.
