Cancer on the rise, but where is Te Whatu Ora?
Sue Fea writes this week on the alarming rise in people in the region with cancer and how it is increasingly afflicting those in their 30-40s. As always, the Cancer Society continues to rise to the challenge, doing incredible work. No wonder it is such a revered and cherished charitable organisation. To my surprise, I wasn’t aware the society gets little government funding and is almost totally reliant on donations from the public and benefactors.
According to Sue’s work the society has seen a 44% increase in demand in the last 12 months. Our region is poorly served by cancer services and the political will to make a difference appears even weaker. Treatment invariably requires multiple trips to a base hospital, either in Invercargill, Dunedin or Christchurch, resulting in significant expenditure on the part of the families just on travel, not to mention time off work, lost income, accommodation and any childcare costs, even before treatment starts.
The staff and care received in these institutions is nothing short of extraordinary, thanks to the dedication of the frontline staff. However, that’s not matched by the timeliness of treatment, the resourcing, nor communication transparency coming from those higher up. This is critically less than what those working at the coal front, the supporting services like the Cancer Society, and most importantly the patients, should expect and deserve.
RNZ recently caught out senior southern region bureaucrats suggesting that the district’s health services were seeing 90% of cancer patients on time, when this was clearly not correct. The number is actually 70%. It is also significantly under resourced with a massive shortage of senior doctors, patched up by ring-in locum doctors. Dunedin will be short five radiation oncology unit seniors, out of eight in total, from next month which will only push more patient treatments onto Christchurch compounding delays and costs. That all gives little confidence to any of us living in the area, nor, I would think, to the Cancer Society.
This is despite Commissioner Morag McDowell’s investigation into the southern region service over the past six years, resulting in a scathing report on the region’s cancer treatment services. It doesn’t seem as if much has sunk in, nor resulted in any cultural change.
A near doubling of demand isn’t sustainable in anyone’s view and I’m sure the society is incredibly frustrated behind the scenes. Demand is exploding while an ongoing shortage of qualified senior doctors and less than ideal Te Whatu Ora Southern strategy or action exacerbates the situation. Meanwhile, the anxiety in those who wait and wait on services is only going to end up with more pressure coming back on the society. Radical answers and some innovative thinking seem to be required, and meanwhile the Cancer Society urgently needs government financial support.

Queenstown ‘a special case’ for tourism impacts
By Paul Taylor
“It just gives us more confidence that we needed a DMP, and that DMP is solid and robust,” Woods says.
“The question now is: are we going to get the funding to implement it?
“We now have 31 DMPs across the country. The government supported the writing of these DMPs, but it isn’t supporting the implementation.”
In the press release accompanying the research, Tourism Minister Peeni Henare says the Government has set aside $5 million to support destination planning at a regional level.
But Woods says that won’t be enough even for one region, let alone 31. He’s not expecting any concrete answers to the funding question during the election cycle and didn’t want to be drawn on whether a bed tax or some other direct mechanism was the answer.
“What we do know is our community has told us the key areas to work on: the infrastructure, shaping the demand, and reducing impact on the local environment, encouraging visitors to be more sustainable and reducing our carbon footprint.”
New research has confirmed once again that Queenstown feels the negative impacts of tourism more acutely than anywhere else in New Zealand.
Data consultants Kantar surveyed 1430 people in May for the latest New Zealanders’ Views of Tourism report, conducted on behalf of Tourism New Zealand, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment Tourism Industry Aotearoa, Regional Tourism New Zealand.
Published last week, the report provides a snapshot into how New Zealanders view the positive and negative impacts of tourism.
It found support for tourism has increased nationally, with 89% of people agreeing it is good for the country. That was up from 83% a year ago. Some 92% recognised the industry has a positive impact on the economy.
The 150 Queenstown Lakes residents surveyed also recognised it is good for business (91%), regional economic growth (96%) and creates jobs (94%). But the regional breakdown detailing the negative perceptions, including its impact on traffic, the environment, culture and costs, made for grim reading for the industry.
Queenstowners had the strongest perception of the downsides in 15 of the 16 categories.
Destination Queenstown boss Mat Woods says the results are “not a surprise”, especially as Queenstown has more tourists than elsewhere in the country. They confirm the much-more in-depth research conducted by DQ, Lake Wānaka Tourism and Queenstown Lakes District Council, seeking to understand how tourism can add value, socially, culturally, and environmentally, as well as economically.
That’s all been fed into the Destination Management Plan (DMP), which aims to address the downsides of tourism and includes the Carbon Zero 2030 target.
It will need a collective response from DQ, Lake Wānaka Tourism and QLDC, the industry, residents and visitors, backed by Central Government and appropriate funding, to implement solutions.
He was also encouraged that the majority of residents recognised the need for a DMP and were aware of the plan.
Woods says the latest research “really does highlight the difference between Queenstown and the rest of New Zealand, especially the significant impact visitors on within our local community.”
Across NZ, for example, come 37% of those surveyed wanted more tourists in their communities, while 62% of Queenstowners believe there’s already too many.
Henare, speaking to RNZ, acknowledged the issues facing Queenstown. “The research, like I said, backs up what we know,” Henare said. “There is some good stuff that’s going on on how we might continue to support, to relieve some of the challenges in places like Queenstown.
“But it shows that we’ve clearly got more work to do.”
On the whole though, the Minister believed the report was positive.
“It’s fantastic to see that New Zealanders recognise its positive contribution as the sector rebuilds from the impacts of COVID-19 and supports New Zealand’s recovery,” Henare said.
“Communities recognise that tourism provides jobs and also that it can positively affect social wellbeing and connection with culture. Tourism New Zealand is working hard to attract visitors who want to experience New Zealand in an authentic way that contributes positively to New Zealand’s culture, society, nature and economy.”

Cancer Society – Those seeking support locally almost doubled
By Sue Fea
The Cancer Society is calling for urgent help from the government to fund its support services after a 44 percent increase in Central Lakes patients seeking support in the past year.
Society South Island CEO Nicola Coom says cancer is increasingly affecting people of all ages and at an alarming rate, with a definite increase coming from those in their 30s and 40s in the past five years. The number of cancer patients is also predicted to double in the next 10 years. Demand has almost doubled during the past year with the Cancer Society required to increase resourcing to respond locally.
As if their diagnosis isn’t traumatic enough, Cooms says they’re seeing huge pressure on patients who can’t afford the petrol, travel and accommodation costs to access the necessary treatment at base hospitals, such as Dunedin.
The standard $100 a night accommodation allowance and 28 cents per km travel allowance available under the National Travel Assistance Service Scheme (NTA) haven’t increased since 2009. “Dealing with the antiquated National Travel Assistance scheme is an additional burden families just don’t need when facing cancer treatment,” says Cooms. “The criteria is confusing, inequitable, and the process complicated and manual. Families deserve better.”
“One of the biggest barriers to treatment for patients is accessing it,” she says. “Many simply can’t afford to get there.” The Cancer Society steps in with its free accommodation and travel support, putting pressure on the society’s community-raised funds.
“Every other health sector – mental health, addiction and disability services, all receive government funding for community services,” she says. “The Cancer Society provides these services and receives nothing. The government either relies on the community’s generosity or doesn’t view it as a priority.”
The society opens its new 52-ensuite-room Canterbury Cancer Centre next month accommodating patients from around the South Island for free. Its two older, smaller lodges are being sold off to help fund that.
In the past year the society supported 260 Central Lakes patients with care and financial assistance, to ensure they get the treatment they need. That’s up from 180 locally the year before.
“If people can’t afford the travel and long stays for treatment, we pull out all stops to make it happen,” says Cooms. “Last year it cost us $577,000 to deliver cancer support to the Central Lakes community. Due to increased demand, we expect that to be closer to $850,000 this year.”
About 500 volunteers work alongside staff in the region offering support via cancer nurses, counsellors, peer support workers, and cancer navigators who help families navigate the health system and their cancer journey. “We advocate for families, answer their questions and provide emotional support,” says Cooms. “It’s really daunting for people, especially when they hear that the health system is under pressure in their time of need. Many say they just couldn’t get through it without us.”
There’s huge pressure on the hospitals’ workforce, says Cooms. While not all cancer treatments are being delayed, a shortage of radiation oncologists has resulted in longer wait times for those requiring radiation treatment, she says. “Finding much-needed oncology professionals, like radiation oncologists, takes a lot of time. It can be seven months before these newly appointed people can start so the lead-ins are long.”
“Governments have underinvested in the health sector workforce for decades and we’re paying the price for that now,” says Cooms. “We must do everything to ensure we don’t find ourselves in this situation again, with regular investment, valuing innovation, workforce planning and collaboration.”
Population increase, an ageing population, and lifestyle factors are all contributing to increasing cancer rates.
There’s a definite lack of communication between health services and patients too, which can be very distressing.
Society South Island Service Delivery Manager Craig Watson says many patients they hear from don’t know what’s coming next, or when, once they’ve had a biopsy, surgery, or diagnosis. “They’re left waiting anxiously,” he says. “It’s extremely challenging too when in the likes of Central Lakes, younger patients have to give up housing to travel for treatment and they can’t let out a room. They’re effectively paying to stay in two places.”
The Remarkables Park CanShop is a main source of revenue locally for the Cancer Society. It’s run by 57 volunteers with all the proceeds staying in this region.

Tourism firms need to adapt post-Covid - report
By RNZ
The tourism sector is being told it needs better strategy, more investment and must be prepared for takeovers if it is to thrive in the future.
A report by Westpac industry economist Paul Clark said adaptability would be the key to the sector getting the best financial returns as the challenges post-Covid start to mount.
Clark said tourism businesses would need to be more analytical to spot changing trends in the industry, devise strategies to take advantage of the opportunities and capture them.
“To thrive in this environment, tourism firms will need to better sense opportunities in their operating environment and organise the resources they need to grab them. They will also be able to transform themselves in order to capture the added value from these opportunities.”
Clark said tourism firms should be boosting their analytical capabilities, leveraging off existing tourism connections, making sure they engage with customers and step back from day-to-day operations to give thought to changes.
“Achieving this will not be easy. This is a sector dominated by small, operationally focused firms that struggle to keep their heads above water even in the good times. Under-resourced, they often do not have the capacity to quickly adapt and innovate.”
He said one way to bring about change more quickly, although it would be more disruptive, would be through rationalisation of companies and creation of alliances.
“That would create economies of scale as well as boost investment capacity levels, both of which are necessary if tourism firms are to make more of the opportunities in their operating environment and transform their operations.”
Clark said he was not convinced by calls for the sector to concentrate on getting higher value and returns from better off tourists than high-volume, low-spending backpackers and the like.
He said the sector survived and thrived on all types of overseas visitors.

Events sector boost
By Paul Taylor
Twenty-one major events in Queenstown Lakes will share almost halfa-million dollars in council grants funding.
Challenge Wānaka, LUMA Southern Light Project, the New Zealand Open, Queenstown Marathon, Warbirds over Wānaka and Winter Games NZ all get more than $30,000 each.
Another 15, including Lake Hayes A&P Show, Queenstown Bike Festival and Winter Pride, all receive smaller grants of $30k or less.
QLDC doesn’t reveal the individual grant figures due to commercial sensitivities, but the total is $492,835.
Despite a huge rates hike of 14% and cost-cutting across the board, the contestable events fund is only $35k less than last year.
Councillor Craig Ferguson, chair of the QLDC Events Funding Panel, says the events “lift our local economy, entertain and enlighten, and have a positive impact on our community’s wellbeing — whether it’s via residents enjoying what’s on offer or taking part as a volunteer.”
Ferg says it is fantastic to see the sector regrowing after the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Having the biennial Warbirds over Wānaka airshow return, alongside international events such as Winter Games NZ and the Queenstown Marathon, is a huge boost. It shows the local industry’s fortitude and spirit.
“As well as supporting the well-known large events, we’re very pleased to also help fund the district’s wide range of emerging shows and festivals including Ripe, Roam, The Wild and Queenstown Multicultural Festival.”
QLDC’s Events Funding Panel, which consisted of councillors Ferguson, Quentin Smith, Matt Wong and Barry Bruce, considered the applications in late May.
The shortlist was approved by full council, in a public excluded session at its meeting on Thursday 29 June.
The other events to receive funding (under $30k) are Arrowtown Autumn Festival, Aspiring Conversations, Cyclorama E-Bike Festival, Motatapu, NZ Mountain Film Festival, Queenstown Diwali Festival, Queenstown Multicultural Festival, Ripe, Roam, The Wild, Wānaka A&P Show and Wao Summit.
“If anyone is interested in volunteering for an event, I’m sure the organisers would welcome contact,” Ferg says.
“And if people are keen to create something new, we’re always keen to see new events in the mix for consideration.”

Taylor Swift just made Billboard history, again
Taylor Swift has just made history as the first woman — and third artist ever — to have four of the Top 10 albums in the Billboard 200 chart at the same time.
Swift is rerecording her first six albums in order to regain artistic and financial control of her work and released the third of those, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), earlier this month.
It debuted in the top spot, marking Swift’s 12th No. 1 album and pushing her past Barbra Streisand for the most chart-toppers by a female artist.

Iran’s morality police to resume headscarf patrols
Iran’s morality police are to resume controversial street patrols to enforce the dress code requiring women to cover their hair and wear loose clothing.
It comes 10 months after mass protests erupted in response to the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, who was held for allegedly wearing “improper” hijab.
Women and girls have burnt their headscarves or waved them in the air at the anti-establishment demonstrations.
Many have even stopped covering their hair in public altogether. Authorities attempted to enforce the dress code using other measures while the morality police patrols were paused, but they have been met with derision on social media and open defiance on the streets. Under Iranian law, which is based on the country’s interpretation of Sharia, women must cover their hair with a hijab (headscarf) and wear long, loose-fitting clothing to disguise their figures.

Twitter cash flow is negative due to ad revenue declines, ‘heavy debt’
Twitter’s cash flow remains negative because of a nearly 50% drop in advertising revenue and a heavy debt load, Elon Musk said last Saturday, falling short of his expectation in March that Twitter could reach cash flow positive by June.
“Need to reach positive cash flow before we have the luxury of anything else,” Musk said in a tweet replying to suggestions on recapitalization. Musk said on Sunday in another tweet that Twitter did not see the increase in advertising revenue that had been expected in June, adding, “July is a bit more promising.” Twitter Spaces also hasn’t generated revenue yet and is “all-cost”, Musk said.
This is the latest sign that the aggressive cost-cutting measures since Musk acquired Twitter in October alone are not enough to get Twitter to cash flow positive, and suggests Twitter’s ad revenue may have not recovered as fast as Musk suggested in an interview in April with the BBC that most advertisers had returned to the site.

Rumbles in Alaska
Alaskans spent the weekend experiencing an uptick in seismic activity, with a series of volcanic eruptions from the remote Shishaldin Volcano Friday followed by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake late Saturday morning off the southwestern coast, which briefly triggered a tsunami warning. The volcano is nestled in the middle of the sparsely populated Aleutian Islands, part of the archipelago making up the Alaskan peninsula. Shishaldin started exhibiting low-intensity eruptions Tuesday but began Friday with a burst that sent an ash cloud nearly 40,000 feet in the air. Meanwhile, the Saturday earthquake was the strongest to hit the area since an 8.2 magnitude quake in 2021. The tsunami warning was canceled early Sunday morning, with minimal impact from the tremors.

Southern Lakes delivers NZ’s first Youth Mental Health First Aid Aotearoa instructors to upskill adults to work better with youth
The newly accredited Youth Mental Health First Aid Aotearoa instructors.
From left (back): Karyn Isherwood (Whāraurau); Lee-Ann Mckenzie (Whakatipu Youth Trust); Kathryn Wright, (registered counsellor); Fiona Humphries (Fiordland College); Rachel Cassaidy (Cromwell College); Karyn Munro (Te Hau Toka Southern Lakes Wellbeing Group); Annette Beautrais (Te Whatu Ora South Canterbury); Victoria Stewart (Mt Aspiring College); Barry Grehan (Sticks ‘n Stones)
From left (front): Amy Kahukura (Cromwell Youth Trust); Melissa Mitchell-Bain (Ministry of Education); Vicky Fenton (Central Lakes Family Services); Julie Williamson (Dunstan High School); Vicki Patton (Wakatipu High School).
Twelve Southern Lakes locals, plus two others from out of region, have become the first accredited Youth Mental Health First Aid Aotearoa instructors in New Zealand.
The new instructors, who work with youth in a variety of settings, are now certified to train other adults working with youth in places such as schools, sports clubs and youth groups as well as caregivers, parents, and whānau, to become Youth Mental Health First Aiders.
The Youth Mental Health First Aid Aotearoa programme has been nearly a year in the making and is particularly dear to its funder, the Te Hau Toka Southern Lakes Wellbeing Group with Chair Adell Cox saying “it will equip adults working with youth aged 11-18 with the best world-leading knowledge and tools to understand the challenges our rangatahi are facing and how best to support them.”
The statistics are quite confronting with half of all people who ever have a mental health challenge likely to experience their first episode before 18 years of age. The earlier the onset of a mental health challenge increases the risk of future episodes, with adolescents and young adults less likely to seek or receive help than the wider population. This means that the adults around young people can have an immediate and significant impact on whether or not help is sought, and how quickly.
Instructors will soon begin delivering Youth Mental Health First Aid workshops across Queenstown, Wānaka, Central Otago and Fiordland.
The 14-hour programme covers common mental health challenges and crisis experienced by young people including depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders, substance use, and psychosis. Participants are taught an action plan that provides the steps to provide mental health first aid to a young person experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis. It also covers how to communicate with young people and outlines professional support pathways.
The innovative international training programme was adapted for New Zealand-specific use by Te Pou, a national workforce development provider for the mental health, addiction, and disability sectors, in partnership with Te Hau Toka. . It took six months to develop and is a legacy project that will have long term and sustainable outcomes for young people. The one-off programme adaption cost was funded by Te Hau Toka, which enables other regions to access the programme for a fraction of the cost in the future.
Te Pou Chief Executive Rae Lamb says “There’s a lot that goes into the programme adaptation including integrating cultural considerations, lived experience, use of language, relevant data and research, and clinical treatment pathways to ensure it is relevant for Aotearoa. This is what makes it such a worthwhile programme.”
In praise of the team at Citizens Advice
Every now and then you are reminded of just how fantastic our local community resources are. This week, Daniela Diaz’s Latin column speaks to how critical CAB is for those who need support and advice. Below is an abridged version.
The ABC’s of the CAB
By Daniela Diaz,
In the heart of Queenstown, a valuable service stands as a beacon of guidance and help. I’m talking about the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), an organisation not well known by everyone but which plays a very active role for the community and is totally free.
CAB provides assistance to people seeking support, providing information on their rights and responsibilities, as well as finding solutions in an impartial and non-discriminatory manner.
Advice
CAB offers a wide range of personalised face-to-face (without an appointment), telephone and online counselling services with volunteers, lawyers and counsellors, for those who need support with legal, housing, financial, employment, stalking, domestic violence, contracts, disputes, benefits, health care, consumer rights, community support and much more. I had been in Queenstown for over a year when I heard about the CAB. In my case, I needed guidance on the visa process and they contacted the Immigration New Zealand offices directly and yes, they answered my questions.
Confidentiality
One of the fundamental principles of the CAB’s work is complete confidentiality, which guarantees that people can share their case in confidence, without fear of being judged and in complete discretion. The team of volunteers is extremely friendly and is even trained to give emotional support, since it is known that certain users could be overwhelmed or selfconscious.
If language is a problem, CAB is made up of volunteers from all over the world and several speak Spanish.
You can find CAB at 44 Stanley Street P: 03 442 6799.

Mt Iron roundabout taking shape
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency contractors have worked through the dismal June inversion cloud to make progress on the new roundabout for Mt Iron Junction.
Road paving and surfacing work has to be kept for the warmer months, but in the meantime the construction crew has been busy working on drainage, relocating street lighting, fibre optic cable and installing kerbing, Waka Kotahi said.
Most of the construction is currently away from the highway, however Waka Kotahi said parts of the job will involve shifting traffic lanes which will mean reduced speed limits to keep people safe.
Between now and spring there will be more trucks operating around the worksite, and intermittent construction noise and vibration, Waka Kotahi said. The agency reminded people to be prepared for delays when driving through the intersection.
The roundabout is part of Waka Kotahi’s Road to Zero Safe Infrastructure Programme, following 40 crashes at the SH6/SH84 intersections between 2011 and 2020.
Construction of the 40-metre roundabout began in February, and the project is expected to take 12 months.
Waka Kotahi said the new roundabout’s dimensions will mirror the Three Parks roundabout just along the road towards Wānaka.
Top dog after 15 years - QLDC’s new planning boss
Queenstown Lakes District Council has appointed David Wallace permanently to the position of Planning & Development General Manager.
Wallace, who’s been with the council 15 years, had been acting GM since January following his predecessor Tony Avery’s move across to Property and Infrastructure. Before this, he was the unit manager of resource management engineering (RME) dealing with RME matters, subdivisions and development contributions.
With the appointment now permanent, Wallace says he is looking forward to the new challenge.
“The Planning and Development team is committed to delivering high quality services,” he says. “I’ve been part of that team for several years as a resource management planner and civil engineer, and we’ll continue to work closely with our Council colleagues and external stakeholders to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead.
“Our aim remains to enable sustainable and appropriate development within our beautiful district to meet the future needs of our resident community and visitors.”
QLDC Chief Executive Mike Theelen congratulated Wallace to his new role after many years with Council.

“As a result, Dave is very well known among our wider team and around the district. It’s clear he’s hugely committed to ensuring that Council and the development community work on the basis of mutual respect and clear understanding and expectations.”

Synthony in the Snow
By Jess Allen
For the first time ever, Synthony will head to Queenstown for a spectacular night of dance anthems at Coronet Peak. Mesmerising lights and visuals will light up the mountain as 30 years of dance anthems are performed by vocalists, instrumentalists, orchestra, and DJs that have join forces for the show.
Synthony is a music event like no other – starting in Auckland back in 2017, the show quickly gained popularity. Each performance showcases the last 30 years of popular dance music (think Fat Boy Slim, Darude, Avicii, and Eric Prydz), backed by the might of a large-scale orchestra. The orchestra will be conducted by Emma Featherstone and feature vocalists and instrumentalists
Ella Monnery, Luca George, Cherie Mathieson, Sam Allen, Lewis McCallum and Iri Aumatangi.
Show Director Ryan Youens says that they’ve been wanting to bring Synthony to Queenstown for a while now, and that the show is wellsuited to all types of different music lovers.
component of the show; all their laser, video and lighting elements. “No matter what the venue, it’s always good fun piecing it all together, because of course, right in the middle of it you’ve got to put an orchestra. Going up the mountain, I guess it’s the same thing but just next level in terms of what we can do up there. It’s a slightly smaller orchestra – we’re doing an 18-piece orchestra up there, which is as large as we can go with the restraint of space. It’ll still be really great; a great show with the mix of instruments. We did a similar thing in Melbourne about two weeks ago with the same setup and it went really well.”
The show will run for 90 minutes and feature everything from 80s and 90s dance classics through to super recent tracks and a couple that have been freshly written to put into the Queenstown show, making their premiere. The show is the Symphony No.1, which includes artists that have been a part of the history and have really helped to shape what we get to enjoy. While the orchestra for the
“I would say it’s a collision of multiple genres of music – we’ve got electronic dance music and we’ve got orchestral music,” says Ryan. “Our Music Director, Dick, is a DJ and electronic dance music producer, and there’s me, who has an orchestral background and works with orchestras in many different ways – we come together and create the show. We started in 2017 and it’s grown since then. In 2019 we had our first show in Australia and we toured to four or five centres there. Last year we had our first show in Singapore. It’s slowly getting it’s legs, and we’re going to new places around New Zealand as well.”
They’ve found organising a show in the snow to be a little more challenging than others, but are excited for one of the most unique performances they’ve put on. Synthony will be bringing with them their custom-designed stage, which includes another major
show is usually that of the local cities, for Queenstown there’ll be a mix of local musicians and some coming down from Auckland to bring it all together.
“It really is for anyone – there is something in there for everyone. If you’re into electronic dance music, there’s definitely something in there, but if you’re intrigued or an orchestral music lover, or even if you just like a really great show – there’s so many elements to this. People come in not really knowing what to expect, and they’ve all had a really great night,” says Ryan.
Synthony in the Snow will be up Coronet Peak on Saturday 19 August. The shows always sell out, so don’t procrastinate on this one! Tickets include a free night ski pass and can be found along with more information at synthony.com/queenstown

Meet some of Queenstown’s buskers
By Jess Allen
If you’re strolling along Queenstown’s picturesque waterfront any day of the week, you’ll get to enjoy a sweet show from one of the many street performers dotted around. From opera singers and jugglers to singing dogs, hula hoopists, talented musicians and dancers – there’s much to see and enjoy.
One of the best parts of enjoying the buskers is that you never know what you’re going to get. In addition to a rotating door of performers coming and going with the seasons and to suit their lifestyle, the artists regularly mix up their shows. Each day the buskers meet to agree on where they’ll set up and what time slot they have to ensure a fair deal for all.
Many of those we’ve spoken to agree that we’ve got some amazing artists performing in Queenstown, offering world-class entertainment and promoting a lovely atmosphere along the beautiful lakefront. We’re a little more chilled out than other parts of the world, and the transient nature here means buskers get a fresh audience every day to showcase their talents to.
Claire and Paul are behind duo, Choice, which formed in Queenstown in 2003. They’re seasoned performers that have played to audiences in Australia, NZ, Ireland, South America and England. Since starting out along the lakefront, they now work fulltime as musicians and have been in and out of Queenstown – they both agree that this is one of the best spots in the world to perform.
“We do events and festivals, but the busking is one of the things we enjoy the most,” says Paul. “And we get to play our own original music – we’re able to sell CDs and get our name out there. We get festival gigs, and special gigs out of busking – people see us on the street – and we do markets and things like that,” adds Claire.
Paul says “It’s for community, mainly, for me and Claire – we’re never down there on our own. There’s always at least three or four food carts, jewellery sellers, people selling their own drawings or photographs, and we all support each other. It’s kind of like a market, I guess. You all look forward to seeing each other each day – they’re your colleagues. When we go down there’s a real nice buzz about with heaps of people on holidays. We’re making a living doing something we really enjoy.”
“You’ve got flights of international tourists coming here directly – tens of thousands of them walking past every day. We’ve got a real hotspot for showing our art, or whatever you do. It’s a real, sort of, catchment area,” says Claire.
Simon West is the man behind the moniker of Juggling Jack Flash. He’s a circus performer from NZ who specialises in juggling, acrobatics and magic, and puts on a 45-minute show. He started busking in Queenstown back in 2004 – he was part of the local fire spinning troupe who were involved with events around town such as Winter Festival. After this, he got a job as a bartender with Cirque du Soleil travelling for a year, which inspired him to go to circus school. After becoming a full-time street performer in 2011, he’s now performed all over the world and will be spending summers in Queenstown.
“It’s one of my favourite spots to work in the world – even if it wasn’t my hometown,” says Simon. “Historically, the evenings have been time for the circle shows and musicians take out the day. In summer, it gets busy – we get, sometimes, nine circle shows in town. My character is called Juggling Jack Flash and I have a specific interest in club juggling, which a lot of people refer to as pins. I have a Guinness World Record – juggling blindfolded on a rola bola – so I break my world record, which is what the whole show is built around. It’s mostly comedy – I tell terrible dad jokes, which are the ones that seem to fly on the street the best.
“It’s one of the best jobs that you could ever have – people clap and cheer for you before you’ve even done your job – there’s not many industries you could get into where that happens, or where they’ll clap for you at all. It’s great. I get to go out and share my passion with people passing on the street, make their days a little better, share a few jokes with them, and show them some things they’d otherwise never normally see.”
Jodie, better known as Hoopsadaisy, is a newer member of Queenstown’s busking scene, starting last Christmas. A few weeks after launching her show, she had the privilege of working with Fraser Hooper, a clown and British director, who helped her to refine some elements of her show. She’s a clown – a quirky character who loves 90’s music, hip hop and hula hoops. Her show features a dash of comedy and some daredevil stunts. Originally a primarytrained teacher, she’s recently taken the plunge and started performing full time, which she describes as exhilarating, and she finds herself humming with excitement after each performance.
“I just started performing and I’ve had such an amazing experience in Queenstown that I’m leaving to go to the UK to attend the Edinburgh Fringe Festival,” says Jodie. It’s been a really amazing platform for me as a performer, and to just follow my dreams. The other street performers have been really encouraging because I’m quite a newbie, in terms of giving me advice and also helping with the rules – I know Simon and some of the other performers that have been busking for a while had spoken to the council about what that looks like and how we organise ourselves.
“It’s really interesting because it puts you in touch with a lot of the store people that are there in the afternoon. When we go down in the evening, we get chatting with them about the streets and how their day has been – it’s really nice to connect with people in the community, not just other buskers, and people that come in and out of Queenstown as well. Queenstown is the place I now call home and I look forward to coming back with a bigger and better show for the Christmas holidays.”
So now that you know a few of the friendly waterfront faces, why not swing by and say hey? You’re guaranteed to find some whimsical fun, have a great time, and help these entertainers continue doing what they love – giving us all a bit of enjoyment.

My Life Story
by Sue Fea
JEF DESBECKER
A true backcountry adventure icon
In a cost-of-living crisis Kiwi American backcountry adventurer Jef Desbecker is just the guy you need around. A self-professed ‘professional ski bum’ in his younger days, Jef wound his way all over the US using skills and savvy he’d learned along the way to carve a lifestyle on snow and rivers.
Despite being kicked out of several high schools during a rebellious streak, Jef realised he needed an education, completing a four-year environmental science degree in three years.
Raised near Buffalo, New York, with its brutal winters, Jef was mentored by a kind farming neighbour who taught him practical do-it-yourself skills. “He taught me so much. I’d sit on the fender of his tractor for hours.”
“My parents split, and Mum moved us to the country where she was into organic gardening long before it was heard of,” he says.
By 15, with the wild 60s raging, Jef rebelled, taking his long hair and bell bottom trousers to California, getting right amongst the hippie movement, and skiing in Boulder, Colorado.
After a bout of hepatitis, he opted out, choosing to study in Salt Lake City gaining straight A’s while also learning to fly, gaining his private pilot’s licence. “An hour in a plane cost me $7.50 and an instructor $15.”
Skiing was another passion. “By my third year I could do school three days a week and ski four.” His marks had won him scholarship grants and he cleaned toilets at night to maintain his lifestyle.
By 1976 he’d discovered road cycling and bought a treadle sewing machine, putting his mother’s sewing skills to use making panniers, a backpack, tent, and thick down sleeping bag. “I knew nothing
about cycling but rode off through The Rockies to California and down to Mexico.”
By 1979-80 Jef had discovered telemark skiing in Idaho.
He was hooked, joining a backcountry Nordic Ski Patrol, building snow caves at minus30degF.
After his tent home collapsed he found a local disused barn loft, living in those for four winters with a candle and thick down sleeping bag. “I learned to tell the time by the stars, and how to keep moving to stay warm.”
While hitching, a guy in a Chevy Suburban picked him up, changing everything. Bob Pruitt introduced him to the “very on the edge” hanggliding world and the big wigs of the fledgling new industry.
“I was so taken. They were going up and hooking into thermals, soaring on ridge lifts.”
Jef then worked in a hang-glider factory in Albuquerque and slept rough in the snow at the base of the local skifield.
A skiing flip went wrong, landing the first of two serious broken necks, so he headed home to work for the farmer, his mobile hang-gliding school truck in tow.
Next he biked and hitched across the US with a girlfriend, helping build condos in Avon, Colorado, while Beaver Creek Ski Area was under construction. “We lived in a teepee in 5-foot of snow with her young son and dog, cooking over the fire. It was minus 20degF at night.” Jef built an in-ground fridge box to keep food from freezing.
Later, he discovered river rafting in Moab, Utah, learning to guide multi-day trips on the Colorado River, upstream from the Grand Canyon.
Jef had featured on the cover of top US ski magazines, and NZ had always beckoned so he wooed top American sponsors, heading down under, seven duffle bags in tow. On arrival he immediately made his way to the NZ Ski Show in Auckland where all the right connections were made.
“Queenstown seemed like the main resort and a girl, named Robina, met us at the bus giving us her rumpus room.” “One thing led to another” and they’ve been together for 38 years.
Jef and mate Whitney Thurlow introduced Queenstown to telemarking - instructing and running courses. For almost 20 years Jef also worked as a heli-ski and backcountry ski guide locally.
He and Robina bought farmland on the Crown Terrace which they lived off.
Since then, they’ve developed two local purposebuilt buildings for ZigZagZoo Childcare Centres, helping fund many more international adventures. Jef’s traversed Wrangell-St-Elias wilderness, pulling sleds on metal-edged cross-country skis for seven weeks, camping on glaciers, covering 400kms, doing a similar expedition up a Pakistani glacier to the base of K2.
At 70 he just completed his fourth whitewater rafting trip down the Grand Canyon, which still leaves him fizzing.
So will he ever retire? “What from?” he laughs. “I’ve never had a job. It’s all just fun.”

NUESTRA VOZ

Joseph Mooney MP for Southland
It has been very busy with school holidays in Queenstown, and I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who has been working hard to look after our visitors.
The weather also played its part with a cold snap bringing some much needed snow to our ski fields, but otherwise the sun shone consistently most of the time.
The ski fields are an important part of the social and economic fabric of our region, attracting many people to visit during the winter months, as well as a place for locals to exercise and connect with our mountainous environment and each other.
I love the mountains and am a very keen skier (although one of my children encouraged me last winter to dust off my snowboard), and am a big fan of the programmes schools in our region run to give our local kids a taste of snowsportswhich may well become a lifelong passion.
The Whakatipu Ski Club also does a great job of facilitating ski & snowboard lessons for children, getting as many kids as possible out there on the snow, and creating a friendly family atmosphere to assist local families enjoy the mountains.
Although it has been busy, and I won’t be alone in having had trouble finding a car park at times, it is also a reminder of how important tourism is for our region and our country.
New Zealand currently has the biggest current account deficit in the OECD. That means we buy more than we sell to the world, and in other words are living beyond our means as a nation. We need to sell more to the world to rebalance our current account deficit, and tourism will play a key role in this.
Not only that, but New Zealand currently faces a recession, and tourism has been credited with helping limit that economic downturn. We have certainly seen that in our region with it being the only place in the country that bucked the trend in terms of a nation-wide downturn in house prices.
Our visitor ecosystem and economy is one of he backbones of our region and of New Zealand. With that we also need infrastructure that is fit for both locals and visitors, including good mixed-modal transport systems and enough housing.
We also need ongoing investment in quality visitorfocused infrastructure and it has been great to see Skylines new gondolas in action.
We also need a strong connected community, and it has been fantastic to see another example of that this winter with the Arrowtown community coming together to create the Bush Creek ice skating rink for everyone to enjoy.

The depths of winter. Week Two
While July is probably my least favourite gardening month of the year. It’s the coldest, bleakest month we have. If you’ve got winter veggies they pretty much go on strike this month. They’re doing minimal growing if any at all. So even though it’s the quietest month in the garden, spring is around the corner with lots to start thinking about and start doing now, to be less overwhelmed when spring arrives. Last week I recommended some undertake some spring cleaning. This week it’s time to sit down by the fire and visualise your garden for the spring-summer growing season.
This can take a few paths.
1. If you’re just starting out or in expansion mode how many beds will you start with and where are you going to put them. A few things to remember when starting new beds, having them near the kitchen, in full all-day sun as possible and with wind protection.
Homegrown Potatoes
Still loving those homegrown potatoes, why not try the Space saving ‘Spud in a bucket’ technique. Score yourself some buckets, somewhere near you there’s a free bucket mountain, shout out on local gardening pages and local groups.
Drill some drainage holes in the bottom of the bucket. fill with compost about 10cm deep, place 2-5 sprouting seed potatoes and cover with a further 10cm of compost mix.
Once the potato plants reach 15 cm high fill with compost leaving the top 5 cm of leaf tips showing. Repeat till the bucket is full.
Remember to water regularly. When the tops die off. Tip out the buckets and harvest your bounty.
2. What are you going to grow this coming season? If you’re short on space, grow high value crops. As tasty as home-grown potatoes are, they take up a lot of space. Tasty salad greens aren’t cheap. Focus on things you love to eat. I’ve spent years growing unusual fairly bland to inedible vegetables. Fun it is, but you can’t beat growing the classics well.
3. Make a plan. Draw out your beds and write down what’s going where. This is where you can get clever in small gardens. Slower growing space grabbing crops like broccoli can be surrounded by lettuces or radishes. These crops are harvested and eaten by the time the broccoli is out growing in the surrounding space.
4. Grow upwards this coming season. Trellises can be used for many crops not just beans. Pumpkins and cucumbers can be moved upwards giving you more growing space down below.
5. This season will be the season of growing Zucchini’s upwards after an insta-bonanza online showing this technique. Again, allowing space around for other crops.
