LOCALLY OWNED SINCE FOREVER BULLETIN

There are ways to fix this Housing issues... they’re killing our community. The distinction between the “haves” and the “have nots” has never been so pronounced. If you’re in the latter category, you may also be in the very confronting position of facing homelessness.

And that seems a bit crazy when we’re told a quarter of the homes in the district are sitting empty. It seems we have enough housing supply; we just can’t access it. So local workers and families are finding themselves having to make the decision to either sleep in a tent /car /sofa, or leave this place they call home.

There are several theories as to how we’ve found ourselves here. Among the top ones are the use of short-term visitor accommodation platforms, along with changes to Government legislation making it less attractive for holiday home owners to rent out their properties. So, whose problem is it to solve and where the heck do we start? Surely, we all have a role to play.

Government could legislate to ensure platforms like Airbnb operate on a level playing field with both the hotel industry and long-term rental property owners. This could mean meeting the Healthy Homes Standards and restricting these platforms in areas with high housing needs. RTA changes could also be made to encourage landlords to rent their homes out beyond 90 days.

Investment property owners not renting their homes long-term already, need to look at the dire situation and consider helping those less privileged. Yes, Airbnb may be more financially attractive, but what about that couple with the two-year-old moving into their car next week? Is this really the NZ you want to live in?

At QLCHT, we’re building 68 homes in Arrowtown and 28 in Hāwea, with plenty more in the pipeline. Over the next few years, we will deliver hundreds more in areas including Kingston, Coneburn, Hanley’s Farm, Arthurs Point, Cardrona, Wānaka and Hāwea. However, we now have over 900 eligible households on our waiting list, so we know we need more. To this end, we’re actively looking at land opportunities to build more high-density housing. Frankton’s Toru apartments are a great example of high-density done well.

QLDC has launched a room-matching service to turn spare rooms in locals’ homes into short-term accommodation for workers. This relies on the local community stepping up.

Last month, Council released its draft Joint Housing Action Plan for community feedback. This long-term strategy is a collaboration between QLDC, Central Government and QLCHT, and outlines a programme of work with nine solutions and sets of actions towards measurable outcomes. Airport partners with Wakatipu Community Foundation

Queenstown Airport has announced a new partnership with the Wakatipu Community Foundation (WCF) to support community philanthropy.

Airport Partnerships and Marketing Manager, Vanessa Hartnell, says the plan is to deliver long-term benefits to the communities the airport serves and is aligned with the airport’s Sustainability Strategy.

“We are proud to be part of the Queenstown Lakes community and it’s important to us that we balance our activity with preserving what makes our region a special place to live, work and visit.

“The airport is an important community asset and the WCF is building a community asset. We want to support our region to thrive through positive collaborations such as this partnership,” Hartnell says.

The Wakatipu Community Foundation is an independent, not-for-profit organisation governed entirely by a volunteer board and a lean operating scheme, which keeps administration costs low. The foundation’s donations are invested and the income earned goes to a broad range of donor-led local projects and causes.

WCF founder and chief executive Jennifer Belmont says it is one of the fastest-growing community foundations in the country, granting more than $2.5 million to community groups and projects over the past five years. It has $30m in pledged bequests and more than $1.5m in funds under management.

“The foundation’s mission is to grow philanthropy in the Wakatipu Basin and we are thrilled to have Queenstown Airport’s help to do that,” she says.

“We’re different because we’re not about one single cause; we’re about facilitating long-term connections between a place and its people. The Wakatipu Community Foundation supports local organisations and initiatives

Impact100 doubles down on Grant Awards

Impact100 Wakatipu has announced $208,000 in total grants available for 2023, meaning two local charities will receive $100,000 each.

Impact100 chair Clare Irons said she is absolutely thrilled with the total. “We set ourselves a goal of two major grants for the year, so it’s wonderful to have reached it with over 200 women donating to Impact100. As we are all volunteers, 100% of this is passed back to our local community through our major grants.

“This will bring us to nearly $700,000 that will have been granted to Wakatipu charities after only four years, and an example of the of the generosity of the women in this community.”

The organisation is now calling for expressions of interest from local charities to apply for the two major grants of $100,000. The additional $8,000 will be donated to the other three charities who make the final five Grants committee Chair Joan Kiernan said the Impact100 model depends on how many women make their donation, so the total fund available and the

that make a positive impact through a wide range of organisations, including those focused on youth, education, health, the arts, and the environment. “Partnerships such as that with Queenstown Airport help build permanent funding streams to achieve long-term resilience for our community so we can make an even greater impact for generations to come.”

major grant amount changes each year depending on the number of women who join.

Last year’s major grant winners The Order of St Johns Wakatipu have ordered their new wheelchair accessible health shuttle, but due to supply issues the expected mid-year delivery has been delayed till later in 2023. Previous winners Pivotal Point Charitable Trust and Routeburn Dart Wildlife Trust are progressing with their projects.

Pivotal Point have started running their in-school professional development and screening programmes to help identify and support neurodivergent children, as well as running a number of parent support programmes. In the Rees-Dart Valley the Routeburn Dart Wildlife Trust have been actively trapping feral cats as part of their predator eradication programme and are hopeful the Takahe release programme may happen later this year. The traps alert the rangers when the traps catch something, meaning the rangers time is used more effectively.

Impact100 members will vote to decide this year’s winner at their Awards Dinner in late October when 5 finalist charities will present their projects. To qualify for consideration for the grant, applicants must be a registered charity, be based in the Wakatipu, and must have a project to the value of at least $100,000. Expressions of interest applications are on the website at www.impact100wakatipu.org and close at 5pm on 30 June

H&J Smith proposes to close stores - 220 jobs at risk

The H&J Smith Group is proposing to close its department stores throughout the lower South Island, including Queenstown.

Group Managing Director Jason Smith announced last week the flagship store in Invercargill along with the Queenstown store at Remarkables Park, and the Gore store, will close due to “systemic changes in the retail sector”. They employ 220 people, including 190 in Invercargill and 30 across Queenstown and Gore. They now face redundancy.

The Mitre 10 MEGA Queenstown, Mitre 10 MEGA Invercargill and Laser Electrical, all owned by the company, are unaffected and will operate as usual. The Dunedin, Mosgiel, Balclutha and Te Anau stores were closed in 2020 during a Covid-19 restructure.

“We have been honoured to have spent more than a century as an integral part of the Invercargill, and Southland, community,” Smith says.

The H&J Smith store in Remarkables Park, Queenstown.

“Over that long tenure, we have witnessed and adapted to many changes within an ever-evolving marketplace, and we have always strived to offer products and services to reflect the needs and desires of our customers.

“The marketplace is evolving once again and it’s moving away from the traditional Department Store model. So, with an eye to the future, we believe it is time for H&J Smith to evolve once again.”

Shopping preferences, supply chain issues, supplier access and procurement, and ongoing reinvestment requirements have all had a significant impact and will continue to make it more difficult for independent retailers to operate, Smith says. This was accelerated by the pandemic.

The 2020 restructure and closures, put the company in a position to recover from the impacts of COVID shutdowns and continuing aftershocks of the pandemic,” H&J Smith CEO John Green says.

“The recovery has been better than we expected, and we continue to trade positively,” Smith says

“The supply chain has faced the biggest changes where procuring stocks has only grown more difficult. Our ability to establish a point of difference that can support sustainable growth is undermined by these changes.

“It is important for H&J Smith to be proactive, so we can take care of our people and help them through this transition rather than have the decision made for us in the future.”

The proposal is out for consultation for four weeks with a final decision expected after Friday, 23 June.

On job losses, the company, in its media release, says staff were informed of the proposal on 17 May. All employees will receive four weeks wages in redundancy, and some have extra payments built into their contracts. Some affected staff members will potentially be redeployed throughout the wider H&J Smith Group.

In addition to the changing retail market, the 12,000sqm Invercargill store is made up of 12 different buildings, all of which have different seismic ratings. It requires significant remediations to the existing building to ensure it meets 100% National Building Standards.

“The decision to propose calling time on our Department Stores has not been taken lightly. However, we have always reflected the needs and desires of the community we serve whilst looking to the future,” Smith says.

The H&J Smith Group started as a Department Store business in 1900.

NZSki cancels some buses into Queenstown, citing gridlock

A Queenstown ski field has overhauled its bus schedule this winter, avoiding coming into town for part of the day due to the risk of traffic gridlock.

NZSki buses usually run from central Queenstown and up to the Remarkables throughout the day. But in peak traffic, Frankton Road can be at close to a standstill or crawling for kilometres, which the local council, businesses and Waka Kotahi have been trying to address for years.

Chief executive Paul Anderson said the buses frequently got stuck along Frankton Road during mid-morning traffic, leaving people queuing for longer, and they could not get as many people onto the mountain as they wanted. Under the changes, three buses will run every half-hour between 7.30am and 9.30am on the usual route, which includes stops along Frankton Road.

“From 9.30am, the Remarkables buses will depart from Frankton so that means the buses won’t come all the way back into town, which was taking too long and we were losing capacity to get as many people up the mountain,” Anderson said.

“That will just continuously loop from Frankton all day, and then at the end of the day, they will all come back into town, bring the passengers from the Remarkables back into town like they did last year.

“It’s just... from mid-morning, rather than coming all the way back into town, we’re just focusing on where most of our queues are, which is trying to get the people out of Frankton and also from the park and ride at the bottom of the Remarkables.”

He expected the changes would have a minimal impact, saying most people leave for the ski field earlier in the morning.

“For us, it’s about the best utilisation of our fleet and making sure we are where the people are when we need to be.”

But it was not the only change on the cards for the ski field buses. Last winter, they ran on a first in, first out basis where people would queue for their spot. This season, Anderson said they were asking people to book their seats rather than queuing.

“That’s to avoid people having to turn up too early and queue, rather than doing it on a bookable basis.”

He hoped it would improve the experience.

More than $115 million has been earmarked to provide dedicated public transport and encourage people to use different ways of travelling in a bid to ease congestion and delays.

Waka Kotahi said the Queenstown package would include bus priority measures on State Highway 6 and 6A, bus lanes on State Highway 6, improving the existing Frankton bus hub and pedestrian access. Construction is expected to start later this year or early next year.

Vice Files for Bankruptcy

Vice Media Group officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last week. A group of its creditors submitted a conditional US$225M credit bid to secure most of the company’s assets and would assume significant liabilities.

Once valued at $5.7B, the digital media publisher estimates its assets and liabilities to be valued between $500M and $1B. The lenders have also agreed to lend an additional $20M to keep the publisher operational while it works to find a buyer.

The bankruptcy comes after declining profits and missing 2022 revenue projections by $100M, leading to layoffs and the cancellation of “Vice News Tonight.”

EU Clears Microsoft Gaming Bid

European regulators approved Microsoft’s $69B takeover of gaming giant Activision Blizzard last week, removing a hurdle for the American company’s years long bid to buy the producer of hits such as “Call of Duty” and “World of Warcraft.” The decision comes three weeks after British regulators blocked the deal, saying it would stifle competition in the cloud gaming market.

The commission acknowledged the deal would benefit Microsoft’s market share, expressing concern over its possible dominance of cloud gaming, a developing technology where gamers play on remote servers instead of physical consoles. However, Microsoft made a series of commitments to bolster competition, which satisfied EU officials, including making licenses for its games available to competitors for at least 10 years. The EU’s decision complicates the bid’s outlook ahead of the US Federal Trade Commission’s hearing on the deal in August. If successful, the acquisition would be Microsoft’s largest-ever and one of the 30 biggest deals in history.

New understanding of “wavy wounds” may make for faster post-op healing

Wavy-shaped wounds heal up to five times faster than straight wounds due to the swirling motion of healing cells arriving at the damage site; findings may allow for quicker healing surgical incisions.

“The highly nonuniform and rotational motion induced by wavy wounds allowed more opportunities for cells to move around, compared to straight wounds,” said doctoral student Xu Hongmei. “This enabled cells to quickly connect with similar cells on the opposite site of the wound edge, forming a bridge and closing the wavy wound gaps faster than straight gaps.”

It is now hoped that the findings could lead to new methods of making surgical incisions which heal faster with less scarring, thus lowering the probability of complications such as infections.

Images From NASA’s Perseverance May Show Record of Wild Martian River

Evidence left in rocks is leading scientists to rethink what watery environments looked like on ancient Mars.

New images taken by NASA’s Perseverance rover may show signs of what was once a rollicking river on Mars, one that was deeper and fastermoving than scientists have ever seen evidence for in the past. The river was part of a network of waterways that flowed into Jezero Crater, the area the rover has been exploring since landing more than two years ago. Understanding these watery environments could help scientists in their efforts to seek out signs of ancient microbial life that may have been preserved in Martian rock.

Hard landings prompt changes

Hot air balloon pilots are now wearing safety harnesses during take-off and landings, after two were ejected from baskets in hard landings, six months apart.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission last week released its reports into the landings by two separate companies, near Arrowtown in July 2021 and Methven, January 2022.

The pilot and two of the 10 passengers on Queenstown’s Sunrise Balloons commercial scenic flight were ejected from the basket in the Arrowtown incident.

The report found as the balloon approached a paddock to land, it was travelling fast on a quickening wind. In the final few seconds of flight, however, the wind speed decreased and the balloon basket descended and caught the top lip of a gully.

“It hit hard and bounced and slid a further 150 metres across a paddock,” the report reads. “The pilot and two passengers were ejected and sustained serious injuries.”

The TAIC investigators found the three people were vulnerable to being thrown from the basket.

“The pilot was standing, manipulating control ropes when the basket struck the gully lip, and was not wearing a restraint harness.

“The passengers were unprepared for the landing -- not in the correct crouched landing position, not holding on to the rope handles as required.” In Methven, a pilot was ejected from an Ultramagic Balloons balloon when it bounced in a paddock. The pilot fell under the basket, was dragged across the field with a balloon control rope line caught around the neck, and suffered serious injuries.

It tipped over on second contact and came to a rest 35m away. All the passengers remained in the basket and uninjured, as they were in the brace position and well briefed.

As a result, the TAIC recommendations include pilots wearing restraint harnesses for critical phases of flight, such as landings, and including an appropriate margin of safety when selecting landing points

“If the pilot is ejected, an accident is virtually certain because the balloon is uncontrolled and passengers unattended.”

Passenger safety briefings should be clear, concise and make it easy for all passengers to prepare for unusual or emergency situations.

Current Civil Aviation Rules specifically exempt balloon pilots from having to wear harnesses during take-off and landing.

CAA Deputy Chief Executive, Aviation Safety, David Harrison, says the CAA is considering a change after the reports but it has already contacted all four commercial balloon operators in New Zealand and found they have voluntarily adopted the practice.

The companies, including Queenstown’s Sunrise Balloons, have incorporated it into their Safety Management Systems.

The CAA is following up on other recommendations such as safety briefings, but these are also now thorough across the industry.

“The best way to ensure safety in aviation is through voluntary best practice behaviour,” Harrison says. “In this case, due to the small number of operators and their willingness to improve safety procedures beyond the requirements of the rules, we are satisfied that this risk is mitigated.

“In the event that new information arises, or we become aware of any noncompliance with operator requirements for pilots to wear restraint harnesses, further action will be considered accordingly.”

Sunrise Balloons was approached for comment on to this story but did not respond. The hard landing was the company’s only major incident in decades of operation.

JEFF HYLTON

An entrepreneurial eye

Growing up in West Auckland across the road from Barry Crump, Jeff Hylton would later become Crump’s late 1970s pool partner at Queenstown’s Arthur’s Point Pub.

“We’d shoot rats in his pumpkin patch with slug guns and catch eels in our backyard growing up in the 50s and early 60s,” says Jeff.

While at Hamilton Boys High, Jeff took the Barry Crump connection literally, heading for a much rougher education in the Kaiangaroa Forest single men’s camp, aged 16, as a trainee woodsman. Here he learned “how to avoid getting a beating” because he could run, and developed a love of the bush and outdoors.

Building in Hamilton, Jeff quickly became a qualified carpenter, setting up his own business at 21, self-employed ever since.

He discovered surfing, spending hours driving to remote surf breaks. “We were the only ones out in the waves most days.” He built lifelong friendships, some that would eventually help him set up in retail.

In 1977 Jeff headed to Queenstown in his Bedford van to learn to ski, working as a builder at the new Turoa Ski Area on the way. “I was completely broke.”

That first night at Eichardt’s Pub he made lifelong friends and scored an instant building job.

“I earned $3 an hour. A single bed flat, or garage, was $40 a week.”

While Jeff loved Queenstown he couldn’t afford to stay so moved to Sydney where they paid builders $15 an hour, plus the surfing was great. He’d return to Queenstown regularly to ski, but a piece of Aussie had already taken hold.

“I met my wife, Suzie, a trainee nurse, at the local pub in Terrigal where Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil and other famous bands, played to relatively small audiences.” They travelled around Australia until he convinced Suzie to come to Queenstown.

“Our first rented house, in Shotover Street is where NZ Shred is now.” Jeff had to retrieve the pet goat he had tied up on the front lawn many times as people had marched it to the Police Station. They bought their first section off agent Andy Hooper for $12,000 in the original Arthurs Point subdivision above the pub, where Jeff filled in as lunchtime chef for drinks, in lieu of pay. “Barry Crump rode his horse in from Moonlight and tied it up outside the pub.”

Building around Queenstown for more than 40 years, Jeff’s built and on-sold six family homes, also building countless houses for clients.

Aerobics and Jane Fonda were big in the 80s and, in typical ‘Hylty’ style, there were no decent classes locally so he started some. “After class we’d all go to The Mountaineer for jugs of beer, spending the money I’d just earned.”

Jeff developed a love for mountain bikes – the new craze of the 80s, quickly becoming addicted. He organised his own triathlons – Moke Lake,

the Macetown Massacre and Queenstown Bay Tri among them.

Jeff launched Queenstown’s first retail surf shop, True Grit, which ran for 20 years, and together with Avanti their team won the local Peak to Park Race five years running.

True Grit sponsored many sports, but Jeff was most renowned for his intolerance for shoplifting. “I took it personally and broke more than one bone in my fists dealing with the odd wayward thief.”

Something of a downtown vigilante, Jeff occasionally roped in neighbouring retailers, like Geoff Bradley and Tony Sparks, Dave Ness as runner, to help corner the culprits, springing on them and marching them to the police station. “I spent some minutes in the police station but no handcuffs,” grins Jeff.

He also started The Queenstown Cap Company and NZ Shred.

The ‘John Wayne’ in him resurfaced when he discovered horses and the annual Central Otago Cavalcade six-day ride.

After kids Zach and Daisy arrived Jeff sought some male solace in a group he formed – SLAGS – Southern Lakes Association of Gentleman Skiers, a group heavily regulated by fines with all proceeds going to heli-skiing. These guys had his back on regular ‘apres ski debt collecting excursions’, travelling as far as Wānaka seeking outstanding payments after the 1987 sharemarket crash. “Often the police were involved but we were always on the side of right,” he assures. Jeff ran the old Gardens Ice Rink for a time, project managing its new build, and after learning to skate at 40, formed, and was president of, the Jurassic League for 10 years with its hundreds of Masters ice hockey players.

Drumming has been a passion, also playing for the Queenstown Ukelele Orchestra, and currently drumming for Reel to Reel with son Zach. Always a passionate hunter, Jeff still hunts once a week and even made deer antler chandeliers until recently, selling many locally and overseas.

‘Out of the Pool into the Wild’ hits film fest

A film about an open water swimming challenge dreamed up by Queenstown-based swimmers will be featured in the NZ Mountain Film Festival this year.

The Lake Attack challenge is the brainchild of keen open-water swimmers Marijn Wouters and Paul Jaquin from the Southern Lakes Swimming Club. The challenge invited people from across the country to join in an attempt to swim every named lake on the South Island. Each year, the Queenstown-based social club competes with the Wānaka Lake Swimmers Club in a series of fun challenges to get more swimmers into the lakes and explore a different side of the sport.

“We’ve had lots of fun challenges over the years, like Swim Scrabble, where swimmers gained points, based on Scrabble letter scores, for swimming named bays and lakes,” Jaquin says.

“But this year, we decided to do something different and open the challenge to everyone.”

Wouters created a website detailing the swim safety rules and an interactive map where swimmers could record their swims. The challenge officially opened on Christmas Day 2022 and soon sparked a series of adventurous swimming missions across the South Island.

“Open water swimming has grown in popularity since Covid, but it’s easy to get into the habit of swimming in the same place and for things to get repetitive,” Jaquin says. “We wanted to invite experienced open water swimmers to stretch their horizons and to explore what the South Island’s lakes had to offer.”

New Zealand swimming record holder Liana Smith embarked on an epic three-day solo tramping mission over multiple mountain passes to swim in Lake Unknown.

Nelson swimmer Joanne Brewin notched up 35 swims in different lakes in just four months, saying: “It is super fun and rewarding, taking us to some seriously beautiful places that we probably wouldn’t have found if it wasn’t for this Lake attack challenge.”

Swimmers braved icy conditions and dodged swarms of eels. Some went to extreme lengths to reach the lakes – tramping for days, kayaking and paddle boarding, and even chartering a float plane to reach a remote lake in Fiordland.

The Lake Attack challenge has also highlighted water quality issues, with swimmers writing in to say which lakes they felt had poor water quality and which were deemed unswimmable due to pollution.

To summarise the five-month-long challenge, Wouters has directed and shot a ten-minute film, following some of the Queenstown-based swimmers involved as they tramped, ran and flew to unique lakes in the region. The film, ‘Out of the Pool and Into the Wild’, has been selected for the NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival and will premiere on Sunday, 25 June in Wānaka.

“The film sums up the spirit of the challenge and the many swimmers who took part. It really shows how people came together to explore this unique side to the South Island’s great outdoors and to take a sport they love to new horizons,” Jaquin says.

Southern Lakes Swimming Club is a social open-water swimming club founded in 2016 by swim enthusiasts in Queenstown, New Zealand. Visit www.lakeattack.co.nz to find out more.

COMMUNITY NOTES

Reduce costs, waste, and impact

Sustainable Queenstown and Wastebusters would like to thank the communities in Queenstown, Wanaka, Glenorchy and Luggate for supporting a successful series of Repair Revolution events over the last few weeks. However, getting items fixed to avoid having to replace them, and learning repair skills to maintain them is just ONE of the ways that waste minimisation can help our community save money.

Next up is Wastebusters’ Low Waste Living workshop series. The first set of workshops will be focused on Households jam-packed full of loads of affordable plastic-free swaps & alternatives, tips for refilling and shopping, yummy low-waste recipes, handy bathroom swaps plus practical ways to reduce your food scraps. Here in the Whakatipu, the workshops will be held at Te Atamira, Frankton, this Thursday [25th May], and St. John’s Rooms, Arrowtown next Wednesday (31st May).

A survey conducted by Wastebusters in 2021 showed that people in Wānaka and Queenstown wanted information on how to shop more sustainably and reduce their household waste. “We have developed the household workshop series in response to this feedback,” program lead Nicola Cross said.

“The series will be fun, informative and, most importantly, tailored specifically for households within our local communities.”

With New Zealanders among the highest generators of plastic waste in the world, using 31kg of plastic packaging annually, the workshop will highlight local alternatives to help attendees reduce their waste to landfill.

“We’ll equip our communities with the tools, information and resources they need to make those small changes that can make a big difference. We want to help them feel empowered to reduce plastics in their own households and save money doing it,” Nicola said.

Tickets are $10 and available on Humanitix or via the Sustainable Queenstown Facebook events.

Bee engaged in pollinator-friendly practices

Planting a range of bee-friendly plants and protecting pollinators was the focus of this year’s World Bee Day celebrated last Saturday, 20 May.

“Not only does the honey bee provide us with a great source of natural food, but it also plays a critical role as a commercial pollinator in our agriculture and horticulture sectors,” says Karin Kos, Chief Executive of Apiculture New Zealand.

New Zealand has a flourishing population of honey bees cared for by 10,165 registered beekeepers with a total of 718,214 hives across the country. With the hard work of producing honey done for the season, honey bees will now be foraging for food to keep their hives fed through the winter.

Trees for Bees Farm Planting Adviser Dr Angus McPherson says during autumn it is critical for bee colony health that bees have access to plentiful forage ahead of winter.

At this time of year Kiwis can help local bee populations by considering bees when planting in their gardens and farms. Some foraging favourites that can be planted in May to help bees stock up on food for winter include herbs such as lavender, salvia, rosemary and oregano, and shrubs such as michelia yunnanensis and the native koromiko. Those with larger properties might like to consider yellow gum trees, lacebark or puriri.

Care around pesticide use is also important for keeping bees and other pollinators safe. If insecticides or other garden chemicals need to be used, spraying after sunset, in calm and dry conditions away from budding flowers can help keep neighbourhood pollinators safe.

Emergency Mobile Alert

A nationwide test of the Emergency Mobile Alert is happening on Sunday 28 May between 6.00pm and 7.00pm.

Civil Defence is testing the Emergency Mobile Alert (EMA) system with an alert that will be broadcast from cell towers across New Zealand to all capable phones. So, you don’t need to download an app or subscribe to a service to receive it.

In a real-life emergency situation, an alert may be sent to target areas affected by serious hazards. If you get an alert, stop, read the message, and take it seriously. It will tell you what the emergency is and what to do. It will also tell you which agency sent the message and if needed, where to go for more information.

Emergency Mobile Alerts are not meant to replace other emergency alerts or the need to take action after natural warnings. Don’t wait for an official warning if you feel your life is in danger. Take immediate action.

Te Hau Toka Southern Lakes Wellbeing Group has appointed Ella Hitchcock as its new Central Lakes Mental Wellbeing Navigator Hitchcock is tasked with providing information about how people can help themselves and others, raising awareness of the support available, and helping connect people to them.

She will also work closely with agencies and networks to help co-ordinate an overall picture of needs and mental health service capacity, facilitate connections, and work collaboratively on wellbeing initiatives.

Hitchcock takes up the baton from Lisa Gear who recently moved over to Central Lakes Family Services to lead its new Perinatal, Infant and Child Service (PICS).

Te Hau Toka Chair Adell Cox says Hitchock is a passionate advocate for mental health and wellbeing, social justice and community success. Her experience ranges from community development, LGBTQ+ support, and Māori and Pasifika support to event management, student pastoral care, and community service, including disaster and humanitarian relief volunteering for the Lions.

“Ella brings a fresh perspective and real insights into the difficulties our young people are facing,” Cox says. “This will be particularly helpful as we focus on rolling out initiatives like the Youth Mental Health First Aid Programme.” Her qualifications include a double degree in Law and Health Science, majoring in Public Health. She’s also been a recipient of the University of Otago Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship and has completed two years of te reo Māori.

Interested in arts, culture and heritage in our district?

Three Lakes Cultural Trust has set up a number of hui across May and early June to get community feedback on the future of arts, culture and heritage in the Queenstown Lakes District. The aim from the conversations is to craft a strategy for our district that accurately reflects our community. These hui are for everyone, regardless of your level of involvement in the arts, cultural or heritage scene. For information, please get in touch on admin@threelakesculturaltrust.co.nz

Cox says that the impacts of COVID have amplified some of the pre-existing challenges the region faced as well as bringing new ones which is why Te Hau Toka has extended its support of the navigator role.

“There’s been a lot of great mahi so far but there’s still a lot to do to help our communities recover. Our primary goal is to keep people well before they get to the stage of needing acute clinical care so promotion, prevention and early intervention are key. We need to keep the spotlight on why it’s so important for people to prioritise their mental health and wellbeing and encourage them to seek help early so that they receive the right supports to get them back on track.

“Having someone who can navigate the system and act as a connector has proven to be really helpful.”

Hitchcock, from Oamaru, will work out of the Central Lakes Family Services offices across the region.

She’s keen to “get stuck in” and is looking forward to working with the Te Hau Toka team and building a strong network of relationships with healthcare and social agencies, community groups and leaders.

“I’m passionate about bringing the joy in tough times and thoroughly enjoy working alongside communities to help improve their health and wellbeing. I also want to find opportunities to create meaningful, equitable and sustainable change in this space, from grassroots prevention to national policy.”

Tiny Room gets a little bigger

Arrowtown’s popular Tiny Room Concert Series is winding through the gorge and over to the oh-so-cool Penny Black Cocktail Bar in Cromwell’s Heritage Precinct. The first ever event outside of Arrowtown’s Blue Door for the series will be held at the end of May and is expected to be one of many gigs further afield.

Blue Door’s Tiny Room shows debuted in 2021 and were an immediate hit with both locals and members of the music scene. Inspired by the spirit of downtown cabaret shows in New York, Paris, and Berlin, they combine music and comedic narratives to delight and entertain. The concerts run for an hour and in the past they have included covers of The Beatles, Dolly Parton and Janis Joplin. The shows are only an hour and due to their intimate nature in a small environment, they give musicians opportunities to really connect with the audience as opposed to “walking into a large pub where everyone can talk and laugh, and some people can dance, and the band is there but it’s not necessary that you are present as to what is happening,” as event organiser Margaret O’Hanlon puts it.

“These performances are unique to not only Queenstown but anywhere else in New Zealand. It’s not like seeing someone at the pub, it’s a true concert – it’s only an hour long and as such everyone on stage is amped and excited to share something different with their audience.”

These days, tickets for the gigs sell like hot cakes and Margaret soon started liaising with a small group of die-hards who were making the trip from Cromwell for the shows. When she first started doing the shows, she hadn’t expected them to gain this amount of traction, certainly not to the point where it started expanding out of Arrowtown. Over the years it’s morphed into some really slick musical lineups of instrumentalists.

“One of the women in the group approached me and asked if I’d ever considered bringing it to Cromwell? I said ‘well, it depends on the venue.’ Because, you know, I’m racking my brain thinking, well, what’s available in Cromwell – and it has to be tiny. Then, about six months ago Sandra and Wayne Noble purchased Penny Black and revamped it into a little cocktail bar, and this women put me in touch with them. I drove over and talked to Sandra and Wayne, and the venue is gorgeous.

“They came to a Tiny Room Concert and afterwards said they want to have this in Cromwell once a month. I thought it was easiest to start with myself because that way it’s no risk to anyone else. So we’re doing the New York show over there, and I have a holiday home in Cromwell, so we can stay there,” says Margaret.

The ‘New York show’ is 1984 – the year I left America and it is all about Margaret leaving New York in the 80s, with music constructed around that. Margaret explains that for Cromwellians the concert will be a little different because she never really tells the same story twice, but it is the same show as Arrowtown’s.

Cromwell’s just the tip of the iceberg – someone who runs a bar in Lumsden has been in touch to try and organise some there, and Margaret expects it to grow even more. There is certain criteria that a venue has to meet for the concert series, namely that it’s small and intimate. Each show offers something a little different and Margaret explains how it’s been really well-received by local musicians and has helped them to diversify their performances.

“It means that musos in town – they’re usually doing what the market is dictating, which is pretty much the contemporary fare of about 20 songs that everyone wants to hear. They’re all very upbeat and popular. They were designed to allow people to hang out, drink and have a good singalong. But, if you want to dive into something a little more interesting, in terms of off the beaten track, it’s a little more complicated musically and possibly isn’t what your audience has heard before – this is an opportunity for these musicians. I’m seeing my colleagues become very creative, and you always want that.”

1984 – The Year I left America will be performed on Wednesday 31 May at Penny Black Cocktail Bar in Cromwell. If you’re an artist wanting to put on a Tiny Room Concert, you can contact Margaret at info@whirlwindnz.com

Costumes Galore up for grabs – Plea for bidders

It’s been a popular community favourite for some 35 years and if somebody doesn’t come to the rescue quickly Queenstown Costume Hire’s collection of thousands of fabulous items will be sold off piece by piece.

It’s been a heart-breaking decision for owner of 16 years Allie BlairHourston, who must sell up by August to move to Tauranga to be nearer family.

Queenstown Costume Hire has become renowned regionally with Allie frequently having clients travel from Cromwell, Alexandra, Wanaka, even as far as Invercargill, to be best dressed at a function or party.

Allie bought the iconic local business off Sandy McNally in 2007 and has built up the collection to literally thousands of clothing items, accessories, magnificent hats, shoes and jewellery, covering pretty much every era in history and into the future too.

The business was started by long-time local Trish Fraser from her Arthur’s Point home in the late 1980s, early 1990s, when she just happened upon some beautiful old Victorian-style, gold mining era dresses. “I bought three and the kids were doing ballet so I was always making costumes,” says Trish. “I bought items wherever I could find them, often the Sally Army. It grew out of those three Victorian dresses. If I didn’t have it I sat up most of the night making it.” Come Easter Trish’s husband would stay up with her threading wire into bunny ears for her popular Easter Bunny outfits. “It was amazing what people had to dress up for,” says Trish, who even dabbled in hiring wedding dresses, often just for brides, some from overseas, to be photographed in. “

Allie’s become renowned for not only supplying the outfits, but her perfect eye for matching every detail with customers returning every year. “Most locals know what I’ve got and come year after year.”

The conference and incentive market also keeps her busy with plenty of Australians dropping in to be kitted out for local themed dinners and events.

She’s clothed some rich and famous too with Sir Michael Hill popping in for an outfit once, and TV celebrities like former cricketer Mark Richardson and Antony Starr from Outrageous Fortune.

Allie’s earned a good reputation with the film industry locally. “They’ll sometimes get in touch and ask, ‘Do you have a cheese cutter hat, or a pair of three quarter pants with braces’, something that’s not in their wardrobe,” she says. “Ninety-nine percent of the time I can say, ‘Yes’.”

While the 30ths and 40ths are big on the 1970s theme, and big and little kids want to dress up as Batman and Robin, Allie says she loves the huge variety. Several of her more outrageous numbers include a slot machine outfit. “Someone hired it and spent the whole night getting $2 coins posted in. He made so much money.” Her ‘Chick Magnet’ costume – a magnet with little chickens on it, is also popular with the males. She has military uniforms and, of course, an immensely popular array of 1970s gear.

TV and movies dictate what era is most popular. Gatsby era 1920s costumes became very popular when The Great Gatsby was showing and The Handmaid’s Tale, from Netflix, has inspired many another dress up party locally.

“I had an older gentleman in who was going to a Peaky Blinders – another popular theme, party at Sam Neill’s and was set on winning the best costume prize of a magnum of champagne. We recreated this look and he won. He was delighted.”

Allie says it’s a thriving little business, even full on during winter with the usual influx of conferences locally.

“I’ve got about two months to make a call on it otherwise I have to dissolve the collection and sell everything off individually, which would be such a pity as so many items team up well together.”

She has a box of 300 ties alone, about 250 scarves, and knows the perfect match for each costume. “They’re so many treasures to find, including some amazing vintage pieces.”

Anybody interested in buying the business and taking it over would only need a garage and a bit of passion. “Even if some organisation or group in the community has somewhere to store it and operate it from using volunteers, or maybe the Salvation Army could take it on as a side business,” she says.

“It would break my heart to have to sell it off in pieces.”

While Allie was selling the business for $35,000 she says she’s open to reasonable offers and would love to see this gem stay in the area.

The Council Word

An airport for the future

After an intense week in Wellington with the Budget being announced and scrutinised, I am reflecting on how this will affect the Queenstown-Lakes community.

The Queenstown-Lakes area faces the same cost of living crisis the rest of New Zealand is facing. It is affecting our families, our businesses and our day to day lives.

With the basics being harder to afford, it leaves people having to make some hard choices about what item is more important that week. National has a plan to help regain control of our economy and get New Zealand back on track.

As the Blowout Budget 2023 was released, New Zealand has seen the massive increase in deficits. The deficit blew out to $7.6 billion, a phenomenal increase of $7.1 billion and the return to surplus has also been delayed.

The Government promised a prudent budget but instead what New Zealanders got was a reckless one. There will be more debt and higher interest rates. Inflation will last longer resulting in 60% of kiwis paying more on their mortgages.

There was no tax relief for middle income earners in this Budget.

The Reserve Bank is pumping the brakes to rein in inflation, while Grant Robertson is foot to the floor spending driving up interest rates and mortgage payments.

The extra spending will put pressure on the Reserve Bank to continue hiking the official cash rate further increasing pressure in the housing market, which Treasury already sees crashing to 21 per cent below its November 2021 peak.

New Zealanders are going to pay three times for Labour’s extra spending, higher taxes, higher interest rates, and more long-term debt.

Labour have increased government spending by 80 percent, but New Zealanders haven’t seen an 80 percent improvement in public services

With no meaningful plans to increase New Zealand’s housing stock, merely topping up existing public housing plans for cost pressure, there are no solutions for housing crisis in Queenstown-Lakes.

National knows that the economy needs fixed, we need to lift incomes and to be able to afford the public services that New Zealanders deserve.

National will fix the economy by ending wasteful spending and by adjusting tax brackets to provide tax relief for hard working New Zealanders.

With a forecast debt blowout to $95 billion by 2026, New Zealand deserves better fiscal management.

I am hosting Chris Luxon, Leader of the Opposition later this week and I invite you to join us at the Queenstown Event Centre at 12pm for a public meeting. Both Chris and I look forward to hearing your thoughts. See you there!
