Beam me up, Scotty
Riding along Shotover Street and my Beam e-scooter suddenly slows down to almost walking pace.
This could be for one of three reasons: the battery is dying, the fancy GPS ring-fencing system which limits speed in certain zones has kicked in, or, and this is the most likely reason, because I’ve been driving like a dick.
In the last few minutes, I’ve been on both sides of the road, on a zebra crossing and the pavement, narrowly avoiding a chef carrying what appears to be buckets of seafood chowder. I half expect two workmen in overalls to appear, gingerly carrying an oversized pane of glass. It has been that type of trip.
There were some minor tech issues at the start, outside Industrial Fitness off Gorge Road, but other than that the e-scooters are easy to use and fun, hitting a speed of about 24kmph. When I approach the Gorge Road / Shotover Street junction, however, I realise I don’t know the road rules for these things. There were some safety messages on the App at the start, but nothing specific. Am I traffic? Maybe. I wait for the traffic lights to change. A group of pub golfers pass by and I half expect them to shout “scooter!” or something equally imaginative. I do feel like a dork in my purple helmet. Then I spot two other beam riders, with flowery shirts and with a boom box (suspiciously cool, likely Beam plants), casually riding where the pedestrians cross.
Ok, maybe there are no rules I think, so I forget about waiting for green and scoot along the pavement and down Memorial Street, charge across the roundabout, and down past the Sofitel, to Shotover St, and across pavements, chefs, etc. The speed slows and remains about 14kmph all the way along Lake Esplanade to the YHA, which makes me suspect I’ve been limited by the Beam overlords, which is something they will do, they say. Dismounting, I’m a little shocked to find the 13-minute trip costs me $10. It is a 35-minute walk back.
These scooters will cause problems. I’m reasonably responsible but still just jumped on and made it up as I went along. There will be crashes and at least one will end up in the Wakatipu Vessel sculpture by Steamer Wharf or the lake. Even though the parking hub system is much better than having them lying around everywhere, they’re not locked in, so can just be picked up and carried by anyone drunk enough. But the main issue as I see it is they don’t really solve any of Queenstown’s problems. For all the talk about the ‘last mile’, they’re too expensive for commuting across town. Any locals rate would have to be a massive discount, to make it work. It’s easier and cheaper to just own a bike.
But, that’s no reason to be super negative about them. Maybe they don’t have to solve problems. Maybe the flowery shirt guys had it right, pay the $30 for 24 hours and take a tour around downtown and have some fun.

An open letter to all AirBnB operators in the Queenstown area
by Amanda Mulqueen Chairperson Citizens Advice Bureau Queenstown
I understand that, to many people, the opportunities that AirBnB has presented since its inception a few years ago have been hard to resist. The option to rent out a room or self-contained flat for a few nights here and there for good money, when hotel rooms in this town were in high demand, made sense. However, this concept has blown itself out of all proportion, and in the current climate you need to ask yourselves where the line needs to be drawn.
I’m sure that most people are aware that Queenstown (and many other areas of New Zealand) are in an unprecedented housing crisis. If you are in any doubt of that, please feel free to come and do a shift at the Queenstown Citizens Advice Bureau, where you can try to explain to numerous people on any given day why there is no emergency accommodation available to them here and that they are going to have to either sleep in their car or buy a tent. We had a client seeking assistance a few days ago who has been living in Queenstown with his wife for 16 years, both in full time employment, with a child at Queenstown Primary School, who are now homeless due to being unable to meet the increased rent where they were living. They have been unable to find any other accommodation and are at a loss as to what to do, and we have no solution for them. We are also seeing situations where people in shared flats are being confronted with their landlords renting out rooms in their flats to short-term visitors with little notice and no consideration given to the tenants’ privacy.
We are seeing so many cases where people are losing their accommodation due to the potential for landlords to make more money from short-term holiday rentals. I can understand when, as a homeowner
in this area, it makes sense to make some extra cash from the likes of AirBnb for your spare room and maybe a cooked breakfast, and you get to meet some new people. However it is the allocation of properties and rooms which were previously being used as rentals for our vital worker population, to accommodate short-term holiday rentals such as AirBnB which is seriously impacting on our workforce and community infrastructure. I implore you all to look past the short-term financial benefits that you can personally gain and look at the bigger picture for our local community. If we all turn a blind eye to this problem, there will be no-one to cook you a meal when you go out in the evening.
There will be no-one to provide the services that you expect on a daily basis. The people who need the living space that is at such a premium right now are the very people who contribute to making this place work, so please, let’s look after them first.

Taking A ‘Leefe’ Out Of Nic’s Book - Tribute to long-time Queenstown Gardens Head Gardener Nic Leefe
By Sue Fea
His was the perfect name for a gardener, as Queen Elizabeth II once told him, and next week (March 21) long-time Queenstown head gardener the late Nic Leefe will be commemorated for the legacy he left in Queenstown Gardens during 33 years of service.
Nic passed away in 2019, aged 91, and next week his family will gather for the unveiling of a special wood and iron sculpture that the Queenstown Lakes District Council has had created in his honour.
Son Gavin Leefe says his late mother, Elizabeth, had placed a plaque and Nyssa sylvatica tree (Black Tupelo) beside the glasshouse in the Gardens some years ago and the sculpture is being placed alongside.
“It’s a life-sized, wooden carving of Dad holding three iron roses,” says Gavin.
Growing up across the road at 12 Park Street, Gavin and his three siblings have many a fond memory of their father’s time working as head gardener and curator at the Gardens – their self-claimed playground.
A career highlight for his father was taking Queen Elizabeth II on a tour of the Queenstown Gardens during the Royal Tour in 1970 with then Mayor Warren Cooper, who still recalls the conversation well. “She said, ‘Mr Leefe, what a delightful name for a gardener. My gardener is Mr Gumnut’,” grins Warren. His wife, Lorraine, recalls Nic and Warren on a great adventure at giddying heights, once using Warren’s long ladder as Nic attempted to save a ponderosa tree that was dying. So does Gavin, estimating his father climbed 38-metres (125 feet) up. Once cut the stump was painted and Nic proceeded to take photos with his Box Brownie camera, the Coopers recall.
“This is a fitting tribute – very nice to hear,” says Warren. “I have great memories of Nic Leefe and his association with the park which is a prized asset for this district.”
Training with the Auckland council’s parks and reserves department first, Nic took over the Queenstown Gardens head gardener’s role, aged 24, in 1953 when 841 people lived here, Gavin says. The 25-bed formal rose garden was his father’s pride and joy, developed in 1967 after he’d visited rose gardens around the country.
His children recall the plans for the garden all laid out on the kitchen table.
Sheep and chicken manure from Frankton filled the beds, Nic never used sprays and the masses of beautiful, healthy roses flourished, attracting expert acclaim.
Nic and his team grew potatoes on site, boiled up for smoko over a fire they lit each day to burn off prunings and cuttings.
Gavin recalls throwing chestnuts from a giant chestnut tree into the fire with his older brother to watch them explode.
His father’s notoriously fruitful tomato vines growing along the wall of their home were a tourist attraction too. “We’d have busloads of Japanese tourists along the side of our house taking photos of Dad’s tomatoes,” grins Gavin, who could reach out of his bedroom window and pick them. His father’s expertise meant he was also a sought after gardening judge at regular Lake Hayes A & P Shows.
Friends of the Gardens chair Jay Cassells is also delighted about the tribute to Nic Leefe. “He was a very important member of a wonderful group of people over generations who’ve preserved this important community asset.”
Members of the community are welcome to join the family for the unveiling next Tuesday (March 21) between 10.30am and 11am.

My Life Story
BILL COOK BILL’S THRILLS – A JET BOATING LEGEND
He’s negotiated the craggy Shotover River canyons and the shallow Dart River braids at speed for 40 years, taking thousands of thrillseeking tourists on the jet boat ride of their lives.
It’s all in a day’s work for veteran jet boat driver Bill Cook, who’s also assisted with many rescue operations through the years.
You’d think he’d know every rock, rapid and bend in the rivers like the back of his hand. Not necessarily. While it’s all too familiar, the rivers are constantly changing – the deceiving and deadly undertow at Glenorchy recently is testament to this, says Bill, who assisted in those searches for two drowning victims.
Bill was always destined for a life on the water, despite being born in Ranfurly and growing up in Athol.
Son of a Rabbit Board pest destruction supervisor, Bill was a typical southern kid, into hunting, fishing and rugby, boarding at Southland Boys High School. Bill and two mates bought their own jet boat, with Queenstown their favourite weekend getaway.
After various jobs, including professional hunting and crayfishing off Bluff – a town founded by his great, great, great grandfather and hometown of his Māori mother’s whanau, Bill found his niche in 1984. Former Shotover Jet marketing manager Steve Lindsay suggested Bill apply for a job as one of their drivers, at just 25 and with no commercial experience. “That’s the way they liked it so we had no bad habits,” he says. He fought off many applicants in what was a highly sought-after position.
Training with driver Tim Warwick lasted until Tim felt Bill was competent. “Driving was a bit closer to the rocks and the boats weren’t as fast back then.”
“I went out on a ride with (driver) Tony Warwick and Trevor (Gamble) asked me if I could do that and I said, ‘yes, of course’, even though I was terrified,” grins Bill. “Tim told stories, consumed multiple pies and we had many smoke stops for him, but it was fairly intense.” In four decades Bill’s had no major accidents or dangerous mechanical issues which he credits to that quality training and head mechanic Andy Stevens. Bill’s boat once shot backwards and up onto dry land during a failed 360deg spin though, thankfully, not the day Queen Elizabeth II was waving from Edith Cavell Bridge.
Peak summer meant 25 trips each a day with repeated commentaries. “I can remember coming up the gorge in the dark with broken down boats then we’d all help Andy with engine changes. Trevor would be there with pizzas and the odd thirst quencher, or four.”
Boat driver and prankster Phil Ball ensured many laughs. Bill and Phil once drove the motorised life jacket stand from the Arthur’s Point beach base to Arrowtown for a pie. “We were escorted back by the amused cops,” grins Bill. On snow days the drivers would use the boat tractors to tow locals’ cars out, with all donations going to the Arthurs Point Pub. One year the Shotover froze over at Skippers causing havoc with huge sludge ice beaching Bill’s trip.
He’s taken many movie and sports stars for a spin, including Robert Mitchum and ‘Lord of the Rings’ actors, and worked as a boat and stunt driver for movies locally. Bill’s wife Phillipa came to collect him once during the filming of 1980s ‘Willow’ when Bill was with little person actor Warwick Davis. She opened the door for me, not seeing Warwick (under 1.2m), who jumped in beside her. She got a heck of a fright.”
After seven years he and Phillipa started Dart Wilderness Jet, selling to Shotover Jet in 1997. Bill’s love of hunting and friendship with helicopter pilot Pete Saxton birthed an idea for heli-jet boat-style adventures up the Dart River. That eventuated as just a jet boat operation. “We were probably the first jet boat company to go through the costly resource consent process in the 1990s.”
Bill’s also driven for Ross Marett’s Heli-Jet, been a fishing and hunting guide, water taxi operator and hired pot plants, before setting up Dart Wilderness Adventures, then in competition with Shotover Jet on the Dart, for Glynn Kemp. More consent battles and on-selling occurred with Ngai Tahu taking over that operation.
Bill stayed on a while before operating a wild game processing operation at Bendigo, doing some casual Dart driving, before Ngai Tahu offered him a fulltime operations role for what is now Dart River Safaris.
He’s still pumping out the thrills for Ngai Tahu’s Dart River Adventures as senior boat driver, doing what he loves. “Working for Ngai Tahu Tourism has brought me back to my whakapapa.” …And to his eight-year-old self, first introduced to jet boats and the beauty of the Dart hunting with his dad. “The beauty of where I work is so stunning. I get to be in the outdoors for a job and that’s who I am,” he says. “I’m lucky enough to also drive boats for their Hollyford Guided Walks through the Pyke and Hollyford Valley to Martin’s Bay Lodge, another area I really enjoy.”

RealNZ limits skifields’ capacity
By Paul Taylor
Southern Lakes ski areas Cardrona Alpine Resort and Treble Cone are introducing daily capacity limits this season - a win for locals who buy season passes.
While the same number of season passes and Earlybird multi-day passes (purchased pre-winter) will be sold as previous years, in-season single day and multi-day passes will be limited.
Once the daily capacity is reached, there will be no more day passes available. And the skifields, owned by RealNZ, are introducing dynamic pricing for in-season passes, meaning the higher the demand, the higher the price.
The goal for Cardrona is to reduce the number of skiers and snowboarders on the mountain by approximately 1000 on the ski area’s busiest days, compared to peak days in 2020-2022.
GM of Cardrona and Treble Cone Experiences, Laura Hedley, says over the last few years increased demand has resulted in very busy days across NZ skifields during peak periods, particularly in July and August.
“Our guests have told us that over the last couple of years, their experience during those peak times hasn’t been where we want it to be,” Hedley says. “We know that people don’t enjoy struggling to get a carpark or standing in long lift queues.”
The daily allowance of in-season day passes and multi-day passes reflects the average number of other pass types the resorts expect to ski on any given day.
“There will still be busy days on the mountains – if it’s a bluebird powder day and we have more season pass and Earlybird multi-day pass holders than average, we may have more people on the mountain than what we’re aiming for,” says Hedley.
“But we’re serious about making our on-mountain experience better, and we hope this change can help achieve that for our guests and staff.”
Guests who purchase in-season day and multi-day passes will be asked to choose which days and which mountains they will be visiting.
Those who buy their passes early in the pre-winter Unlimited season pass
and Earlybird multi-day sales will lock in the greatest flexibility – able to ski and snowboard at both mountains, and not needing to commit to fixed days.
Cardrona and Treble Cone are also introducing a new 5-day “Flexi” pass at a higher per day rate, which can be used on any day of the season, at either mountain.
Pricing for all in-season passes will change depending on demand. Guests are encouraged to buy online and early to secure the best per day pricing.
“We appreciate this is a big shift in approach, and a New Zealand first,” says Hedley. “However, dynamic pricing is widely used overseas to manage numbers on the mountains, and we’ve heard great feedback on the positive impact this approach has on guest experience.
“As with any big change, we’re expecting a few teething issues. So, we’re asking for feedback, patience and support from our mountain communities as we get this right this winter.”
Season passes are on sale now from the Cardrona website.
Zoi takes another win
By Paul Taylor
She did just that, dropping a backflip and hunting down airs as she attacked the now-familiar technical terrain to earn a 79.2, the second-highest score of the day after her 80 in semi-finals, which also earned her the Run Of The Day. Sadowski-Synnott is coming off a series of slopestyle and big air podium finishes this winter.
“I feel super honoured and privileged to be able to compete in this competition because it’s the best backcountry riders in the world, riding the best snow in the most psycho terrain. To be part of it is pretty insane. Coming from a slopestyle and big air background, it’s so different but kind of the same in the sense where you’re just trying to ride your best and perform on the day.”
She adds: “I haven’t ridden a lot of pillows in my life, so to come here and ride this definitely was a learning curve and I’m super stoked—I feel like I pushed myself and everyone rode some insanely sick lines!”
This win marks Sadowski-Synnott’s 24th consecutive podium finish across all disciplines, all achieved over the last three years.
Watch Sadowski-Synnott’s winning run on the Lakes Weekly Bulletin website.
Snowboard sensation Zoi Sadowski-Synnott has won the YETI Natural Selection Revelstoke.
The competition was held in the most dynamic and challenging terrain in snowboard competition history located in the Selkirk Mountains, 15 miles from Revelstoke, BC.
Sadowski-Synnott was up against Hailey Langland (USA) in the semi-finals, taking the win and advancing to the finals against Big Mountain shredder Elena Hight (USA).
The Wānaka 22-year-old Olympic gold medallist, whose home mountain is Cardrona, said: “I knew Elena was going do some crazy lines, so I wanted to stick to what I knew and go where the take-offs were to spin off and try to find little pillow lines that were still untracked and soft and make it to the bottom in one piece.”

Glendhu Golf Course to be championship standard
By Tony O’Regan / Wānaka App
Darby Partners, the proponents of the new Glendhu Golf Course, say it will be an 18-hole championship course designed and constructed to championship standards.
Responding to questions from the Wānaka App, Darby Partners said the course will cover approximately 100 hectares and be around 6,000 metres in length.
The Wānaka Golf Course is 5,770 metres.
Darby Partners has played a lead role in a number of high-profile golf courses in the Wakatipu basin including Jack’s Point, The Hills, and Millbrook. Director John Darby says the course will be ready to play in two years (2025). “Glendhu is well advanced, such that 18 months construction period is very achievable and we are aiming for an opening date for play six months post construction, given there are no unforeseen weather events,” he said.
“Darby Partners has built the majority of new golf courses in New Zealand recently and each construction period has on average been 18 months.”
John said renowned New Zealand golfer Sir Bob Charles has been involved in reviewing the golf course design layout and recently visited the site to review the latest design, providing positive feedback.
A spokesperson for Darby Partners said the course is designed to leave as much of the existing terrain as “untouched” as possible and that all holes will have views of the lake, mountains, and aspects of Glendhu Bay.
The golf course has been a 15-year project.
The original land use consent was lodged in January 2007 and the consent was granted by the Queenstown Lakes District Council in May 2008, but was appealed to the Environment Court, which conferred approval in May 2012. Consents required to commence construction were granted in September 2022.
Since acquiring 200 hectares of land for the golf course development in 2013, Darby Partners commenced native revegetation of over 150,000 native plants around the property, and areas of land have been retired from grazing to allow native vegetation to regenerate.
The golf course consent includes a club house, visitor accommodation, and 42 residences. The spokesperson said designs for onsite facilities and the surrounding residential development are underway, with further announcements on this stage of the project to come.

Remote work costing Manhattan more than $12 Billion a year, report says
The shift to remote work in Manhattan means the island’s office workers are spending about US$12 billion less every year than they did before the pandemic, according to a new study.
Workers are spending about 30% less time in the office, which has cut their annual near-the-office spending on food, entertainment and the like by an average of nearly US$4,700 per person.
While the same is happening is other big cities, the cost on a per-person basis is more than 50% worse in NYC than anywhere else, Bloomberg found.
The study suggests, nearly three years after New York City’s first COVID case, people simply have not returned to full-time in-office work.

A service dog honoured after more than 250 flights
Kaya the service dog is honoured on her last plane ride ever after being on 250-plus flights. Many people wish their dogs could live forever; but, since this is an impossible dream, it makes important to honour the trusty canines in our lives. This is exactly what Marine Corps veteran Cole Lyle has done with his beloved Kaya, a German Shepherd service dog. He gave Kaya a moving tribute aboard her final flight home.
After being diagnosed with an incurable form of cancer, Lyle took her to Texas, the place where she was born and where they met, for her to spend her final days. For Lyle and many others, Kaya was much more than a service dog—she was an ambassador of veteran service dogs, having been the driving force behind the Puppies Assisting Wounded Servicemembers (PAWS) Act.

Glimpse beneath iconic glacier reveals how it’s adding to sea-level rise
Researchers have dropped a submersible vehicle down a hole in Antarctic ice to get their closest-ever look at the underside of Thwaites Glacier — a massive and increasingly unstable body of ice that has become an icon of climate change — and the first-ever glimpse at the spot where the ice meets the land.
The observations, published in two papers, could help to pin down one of the biggest uncertainties in current projections of rising global sea levels. The studies imply that models of how the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and glacier flow respond to climate change are missing some important details. Incorporating these insights should clarify how and why the ice will change in the future.

Famous poet Pablo Neruda was poisoned after a coup, according to a new report
International forensic experts delivered a report to justice officials in Chile today regarding the death of the South American country’s famous poet Pablo Neruda — some 50 years ago. A nephew of Neruda tells NPR that scientists found high levels of poison in the poet’s remains.
Scientists from Canada, Denmark and Chile examined bone and tooth samples from Neruda’s exhumed body. Neruda died in 1973, just days after the US-backed coup that deposed his friend President Salvador Allende. Rodolfo Reyes, a nephew of the Nobel Prize winning poet, says scientists found high levels of the bacterium that can cause botulism poisoning.

Huge turnout for 86th Wānaka A&P Show
By Paul Taylor
Wānaka welcomed at least 44,000 people to the 86th Wānaka A&P Show over the weekend.
Organisers were thrilled with the turnout, particularly after last year’s cancellation due to Covid-19, the first cancellation in the show’s 85year history.
Wānaka Show event manager Jane Stalker was delighted to see the Upper Clutha community celebrating together again.
“It was great to see so many families out and about and socialising, and just enjoying all of the wonderful activities and entertainment that we had on offer at this year’s show,” she says.
“We’ve had people from all walks of life attend the event and we feel rapt seeing communities from all over the country. It’s humbling to see such great support and these people are bringing the Show back to life again after the last few interrupted years.”
The Wānaka A&P Show is the largest two-day show in the South Island and a fixture on the calendar for Upper Clutha locals and visitors to the region.
The 2023 show welcomed an entertainment line-up of 14 different acts, including country-rock artist Cam Scott and celebrity chef Annabelle White. The traditional equestrian and livestock events were also a highlight, along with 526 trade exhibitors and the K9 Natural Jack Russell race.
About 90 Jack Russells competed in the quirky race, with Wānaka terrier Archie taking out first place.
“The Life & Style Marquee was also an impressive part of this year’s show,” Stalker adds. “The feedback we have received from show-goers was that they really enjoyed the food, wine and fashion showcases. Annabelle White was a delight.
“Overall, it’s been another sensational show and we are very grateful to everyone who attended and helped to produce the event, including the show’s remarkable volunteers. We had more than 400 community groups and volunteers this year, which is fantastic.”
Next year’s Wānaka A&P Show will be held on March 8-9, 2024.

IN BRIEF
Downtown ram raid
A man has been arrested after what is believed to be Queenstown’s first attempted ram raid. He allegedly reversed a small white Honda into the Camp Street BNZ bank several times at 11.45pm on Friday night, smashing the windows and door. Video uploaded to social media shows shocked onlookers surrounding the car, as two police run towards the scene. The car then drives off. Police say the man left the scene without anything being taken. “Police soon located the vehicle and followed it at a distance along State Highway 6,” a police spokesperson says. “The vehicle was successfully spiked south of Kingston and stopped soon after.” The driver was taken into custody without incident and is facing charges of intentional damage in relation to the incident. Enquiries are continuing.
By-election is on
Well-known Queenstowner Melissa White has thrown her hat back in the ring for the vacant Arrowtown-Kawarau Ward seat. There are only two candidates in the running, with nominations now closed. White is standing against Glenorchy Community Association chairman John Glover. He hopes to make it third time lucky, while this will be White’s second crack at getting to the council table. She missed out in October, finishing fifth with 1,081 votes. Craig ‘Ferg’ Ferguson (2,540), Lisa Guy (1,893) and Neeta Shetty (1542) were elected, but Shetty has since resigned sparking the by-election. Fourth place Nell Hunter (1,162) has chosen not to stand again. “So, it looks like we are back in action folks,” White says on her Facebook election page. “My passion and desire to make a contribution is still strong, and I have just submitted my nomination to the council.” Voting papers will be mailed out to ward electors on Thursday, 13 April, and voting will close at midday on Friday, 5 May.
Robinson’s best result of season
Alpine superstar Alice Robinson recorded her best Giant Slalom World Cup finish of the 2023 season, with a seventh-place finish in Åre, Sweden, on Friday afternoon CET. After her race, the Queenstown 21-year-old said: “It’s a great feeling to get a season best result.” Robinson put down a solid first run in hard and fast snow condition but a few small timing mistakes cost her valuable time, putting her in 18th. In run two, she hit the gas and clocked the third fastest second run of the day. “The second run I just knew I had to fix my line so I could link and get some flow between the turns, as well as pushing harder than the first run. For the World Cup finals, I just want to be able to produce two good runs,” she said. The World Cup finals are set to be held in Soldeu, Andorra, from 13 March.

In the past six years Ghana has reforested over 628,000 hectares of land, putting the country seven years ahead of its target to restore 2 million hectares of degraded land by 2030. The success is attributed to an agroforestry programme that helps farmers plant trees on their land.

After 25 years of effort, the Mexican Wolf Recovery Program is gaining momentum with the population doubling from 98 in 2015 to 196 last year. Chilika Lake, the second biggest lake in India, was declared dead in the 1990s, but two decades of conservation work has resulted in a six-fold increase in seagrass and the return of marine life. Wakatipu IMPACT100 celebrates International Women’s Day
By Miranda Spary
Hash brownies, delicious Valli wine, drop-dead views of the Remarkables and the Shotover River... If you wondered what all the noise in the Wakatipu Basin was on Wednesday evening, it was just a huge gathering of happy, chatty women getting together to celebrate International Women’s Day. The Wakatipu IMPACT100 team had organised the event and real estate superwhizz Jo Eddington at Sothebys had persuaded the generous owners to lend their ultramodern house full of contemporary art as a venue. We women are pretty good at talking to each other, but for a change, we did some very interested listening. Julia Strelou is a New Zealander of the Year Local Hero medalist, a poet and podcast host as well as running the Addicted to Media agency. Her life has not been at all easy - she was brought up in a hovel (I’m often worried people think I live in a hovel, but this was a real one without a loo) in Nimbin, near Byron Bay - most famous for being Australia’s alternative lifestyle capital. One day, while her father was out demonstrating waving placards at some demonstration or other, hungry 7 year old Julia was delighted to find a tine of chocolate brownies which she shared with her little friends. It seems so wrong to laugh about small children totally stoned on hash, but Julia has a VERY good way with words. Although her upbringing was so impoverished, she did have a mother who believed in education, and reading was a brilliant escape from the weirdness of her life. I couldn’t believe we could still be laughing after she’d talked about all the metal in her jaw, courtesy of her violent ex. She’s gone on to set up women’s refuges and won awards for her work. She’s a seriously talented speaker and a passionate believer in women empowering each other which is what IMPACT100 is all about.
Kaye Parker knows a thing or two about empowerment as well. Jennifer Belmont is nuts about philanthropy and is the person who set up the Wakatipu Community Foundation as soon as she arrived in Queenstown. At the first big event, Kaye told Jennifer she’d be speaking at it. “I’m a back of
house person” , said Jennifer. “No, you’re not - you’re the face of the whole thing”, said Kaye. And now she is! She still does like to hide her light under a bushel, though. Get out from under that bushel, you superstar, Jennifer!! One of the biggest surprises of the night was the huge number of young women signing up. I asked lots of them what had brought them along to Impact100. Many of them were new to the Wakatipu and thought it would be a great way to get to meet other like-minded people. Younger people seem way more aware of the various issues in the community and understand how hard life is for so many people here. They’re also more troubled by climate change, and conservation issues. Some of them also said that while Impact100 ’s raison’d’etre is to help community groups, it is extraordinarily helpful at making great business contacts and increased sales. If you’re a woman who’s looking to meet some other enthusiastic, generous and fun women, do contact IMPACT100. Men aren’t able to join (how very sexist of us!) but we do let them sponsor women who might not have the $1000 to spare. In case you haven’t heard how it works, at least 100 women donate $1000, then invite community groups to apply for their funds. The applications are all vetted by the grants committee then the whole group votes on which application is the most compelling. In the three years it’s been going in the Wakatipu, it’s given out nearly half a million dollars, and taught us all a lot about what the needs of our community are. As well as being extremely worthy (doesn’t that sound dull?) it’s very, very good fun. www.impact100wakatipu.org is the website.

Training for youth mental health instructors
By Paul Taylor
Te Hau Toka Southern Lakes Wellbeing Group and Te Pou are looking for 10 locals to become New Zealand’s first instructors of a new Youth Mental Health First Aid Aotearoa programme.
Focused on supporting youth aged 11-18, it will be launched in the Southern Lakes region in June.
Te Hau Toka chair Adell Cox says the programme will be vital in upskilling people working with youth to understand their challenges and how best to support them.
“Our focus is on prevention and early intervention with an equity lens so it’s vital that we give those working with our rangatahi the best world-leading knowledge, tools and support to do that.”
Instructor applicants must have proven experience working with youth in a variety of settings. They should have a strong and engaging presentation style, be trusted and deeply embedded in their local communities and from Queenstown, Wānaka, Central Otago or Fiordland.
They also need to be available to complete a five-day training course in June in Queenstown.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is an international programme is currently being adapted for New Zealand-specific use by Te Pou (a national workforce development provider for the mental health, addiction, and disability sectors).
Te Hau Toka has funded the one-off development cost. Once the local new instructor training is complete, the programme will be made available nationally through Te Pou.
It covers common mental health challenges and crisis experienced by young people including depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders, substance use, and psychosis.
Participants are taught an action plan that provides the steps to provide first aid to a young person experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis. It also covers how to communicate with young people and outlines professional support pathways.
Once the instructors pass the course, they will be certified to train other
adults to become Youth Mental Health First Aiders. Those working in schools, sports clubs and youth groups, as well as youth caregivers, parents and whānau, will be a particular focus.
Te Pou Chief Executive Rae Lamb says there is a real need for targeted support.
“We know that about half of mental health challenges occur before 18 years of age and that early intervention can reduce the impact.
“Ensuring adults working with youth have the skills and confidence to provide first aid to a young person experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis will make a huge difference to the outcome.”
For more information, including the criteria and how to apply, please visit www.tepou.co.nz/youth-mhfa-aotearoa-instructor-expression-of-interest.

Put on your dancing shoes
by Jess Allen
Two upbeat participatory dance events are on the programme at this year’s Wānaka Festival of Colour. Celebrated dance choreographer Michael Parmenter and Balfolk Dunedin Director Kate Grace will lead the dances in Bannockburn and Wānaka at the end of March.
Both nights will be accompanied by contemporary folk musicians Catgut and Steel, or Mike Moroney, Anna Groves and Sofia Bidwell, and will take inspiration from their unique venues. Mid 19th century themes will be the focus at The Bannockburn Ball. It will take place in the Bannockburn Coronation Hall, a gorgeous period country hall. In Wānaka, The Crystal Palace Dancehall’s Spiegeltent, which is a travelling tent filled with stained glass, mirrors and chandeliers, will play host. The Wānaka night will boast dances from the early 20th century including waltz and blues.
Both events include participatory dances and an occasional performance to enjoy. Michael Parmenter and Kate Grace will be the callers each night – initiating the dances and instructing the moves. Michael grew up in Central Otago and is excited for the soirees and to come back to the region.
“I’m looking at different social history and periods of the Central Otago region, and the two dances that we’ve got in Bannockburn and at the Crystal Palace in Wānaka are sort of snapshots of 19th century dance culture and early 20th century,” says Michael. “One of the things that I love about that particular area is that through the gold mining period, there were so many different cultural influences coming in from Scandinavia, from America, from the Celtic regions, and all these sorts of influences taking place. It’s a little bit of an imaginative reconstruction, but I’m just looking at some of those cultures and finding dances from those eras and areas, and I’m providing the opportunity in two really beautiful venues.”
Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend – Michael and Kate will be introducing choreography that’s not too complex – “a basic rhythm pattern that you can do all kinds of stuff with,” he says. The dances chosen can be taught in two to five minutes and each night will bring something different. In Bannockburn, there will be an opportunity to reconstruct dances of the time – taking a snapshot of the 19th century but reimagining it in today’s environment.
“For the Crystal Palace event, I’m looking at the early part of the 20th century where some of those dances we do at Bannockburn get modified by the influence of jazz, Tango, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, and those sorts of genres. It’s a lot of the same dances we’ll explore at Bannockburn Ball, but they’ve been modified and will have a different tinge,” says Michael.
The dances will take place at Bannockburn Coronation Hall on Tuesday, 28 March, and at Wānaka’s Pacific Crystal Palace on Wednesday, 29 March. Pop on those dancing shoes and get ready for a night of fun. Tickets and more information can be found at festivalofcolour.co.nz

naka Festival of Colour returns
by Jess Allen
The tenth Wānaka Festival of Colour is hitting the streets from 26 March –2 April. The bi-annual celebration of the arts will host international acts for the first time since 2019 and has a programme that is bursting with dance performances, live music, theatre and comedy.
This year they’ve rebranded from Festival of Colour to Wānaka Festival of Colour, to celebrate arts in the Upper Clutha region. The flagship event for the arts in the Southern Lakes region will bring a stunning Spiegeltent to the centre of town – The Pacific Crystal Palace, which will host many events.
The underlying theme this year is reconnection – with the arts, artists and people. Jo Mills is the publicist for the event and is excited to bring the best of Aotearoa and the world to Wānaka and the Upper Clutha.
“This is our tenth festival year and I think one of the great things is just taking a punt on something you’re not sure about,” says Jo. “I think it’s always been a key part of the festival – there’s the well-known names, whether it’s The Royal New Zealand Ballet, the Phoenix Foundation or Simon O’Neill, which are always great fun – but you can also look at the programme and go for something you might not automatically gravitate towards.”
In the off years of the festival, Aspiring Conversations is held. It was unable to go ahead last year due to Covid and has been brought back as part of this year’s event. This means that a series of panel discussions will be incorporated. 2023 also brings a fresh new look to the event through adding an injection of vibrant colours, which will form the backdrop of the festival. The colour palette was chosen with a view to the broader Wānaka landscape, especially at this spectacular time of year. The refresh also pays homage to those involved each year, from volunteers to visitors, sponsors, and the team – all adding to the Festival and region. There’s a huge variety of artists and performances including throughout schools – there’s a strong focus on engaging the community. In addition to ticketed events there will be a number of free events running during the day and into the night.
“On the final weekend of the festival we have what we call the Wānaka Community Day and there are just a number of really cool events all around town. Suddenly, rather than it being in all the indoor venues of the region, the CBD becomes the centre stage. Wasabi, the Queenstown Japanese community choir are coming to perform, we have the Biggest Little Circus, which is a really cool circus performance, and Silk and Circus,” says Jo.
The Wānaka Festival of Colour will run from 26 March until 2 April offering a number of different acts across multiple venues around Wānaka.

Banish Self Sabotage!
Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland
Lost sight of the bigger picture?
Spending more time in the day speaking negatively to yourself?
BEWARE!
This is how disease in the body is formed. Read on to banish self sabotage and learn in three easy steps how to get your self-love back.
Our challenge was the cycle up Mont Ventoux, in turns out it was 32Km of constant uphill and we mean uphill.
The Ventoux is a god of Evil, to which sacrifices must be made. “It never forgives weakness and extracts an unfair tribute of suffering.”
Roland Barthes, French philosopher.
19 km to go with legs pumping my inner chatter arose from that annoying place.
It was incredibly hot, 32 degrees and my heart and lungs were screaming, let alone the numbness in my feet and the aching in my palms and neck. Sarah (my wife and wing woman) had been back and forth along the climb and I knew she knew I was hurting, her final words before driving away, ‘find your rhythm’.
I knew that the hardest part was to come, a steady 4-5% was now increasing and I knew it would for the next 7km. It would change rapidly reaching 10% in a very short time and maxing at 12%!
Louder it rose, that wicked voice inside, ‘you can’t do this, you haven’t trained enough, it’s too far, it’s too hot, it’s too steep’. I unclipped my left foot, allowing the bike to naturally halt and stopped. I had to make a choice and fast!
My self-love needed to be installed and fast, I needed to believe that I was more than this. I took a drink, stretched and reset my mind. There was no way I had come this far, faced all these mini curve balls (my Dad fell very ill, I had to head to the UK so training became limited) and this ‘hill’, which I now referred to rather than mountain, was not going to beat me.
Even though my body was screaming and physically having the juice to complete this was borderline, the notion that this hill would beat me was inconceivable. Right foot click in, gloves back on and eyes focused. Left, right, left, right, push, pull, repeat. The sudden rush of blood to my legs made them ache in that same way your hands do when they have been freezing cold and numb.
Despite this I found myself smiling and when Sarah checked in with me in the support vehicle driving beside me she said ‘You look fresh’, ‘Yep’ I replied and I meant it!
Here are three easy steps to banish self sabotage and get your self-love back.
Step 1. It’s OK to have negative dialogue.
You know that voice well, you know the mocking tone, the volume, the pace. It comes from nowhere and can stop you in your tracks. When this happens, know you have a choice, you can listen or you can DELETE it. All you do is shout DELETE, DELETE, DELETE or your version of it inside your head, or shout it out loud if you can. Scare the voice away, let your own self love and belief shine through.
Step 2. It’s OK to stop and breathe.
This step was a shock to me on the mountain that day, I thought that I had to keep going, no stopping was allowed but that was just my frame. That’s too hard, we need to stop and regroup, hydrate in my case and nurture in most cases.
Look at what’s working, take time for you, relax and then keep going. I did this 4 times on that climb, once I made the voice go away that first time I stopped, I had decided I was winning. Stops meant stretching, getting the feeling back in my feet, taking a gel and pressing go again, ready and full of conviction.
Step 3. Love yourself, fully and completely.
This is not about being an egotistical nightmare, this is about quiet, steadfast, love. A knowing that you are so much more than you ever think you are. You can do so much more than you can imagine. Even as you have taken the time to read this, your neurology has created around 10,000 new neural networks for you to use. You have a choice, it is that simple, decide to love who you are, don’t wait until you are slimmer, richer, fitter, smarter, older.
Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland, Number 1 Best selling author, runs an International Neural Coding® Company. She has 30 Neural Coders working with her around the globe, online to help people identify their problem, delete it and install neural coding that empowers them.
Cyclone Gabrielle triggered more destructive forestry ‘slash’ – NZ must change how it grows trees on fragile land
Author:
The severe impacts of Cyclone Gabrielle on the North Island, and the five severe weather events experienced by the Thames–Coromandel region in just the first two months of 2023, are merely the latest examples of more frequent erosion-triggering rainfall events over the past decade.
Inevitably with the heavy rain, soil, rocks and woody material (also known as “slash”) from landslides have flowed down onto valleys and flood plains, damaging the environment and risking human safety.
Clear-fell harvesting of pine forests on steep erosion-prone land has been identified as a key source of this phenomenon.
So we need to ask why we harvest pine forests on such fragile land, and what needs to change to prevent erosion debris and slash being washed from harvested land.
Pine was a solution
Ironically, most of these pine forests were planted as a solution to soil erosion that had resulted from the clearing of native forests to create hill country pastoral farms.
The clearing of native forests happened in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but the consequences – erosion, flooding and floodplains covered in silt and rocks – only became apparent decades later.
Research has shown that pastoral farming on our most erosion-susceptible soils is not sustainable. The productivity of the land is being degraded by loss of soil and large areas have been buried with sediment eroded from hill country farms upstream.
So the need to reforest large areas of erosion-prone farmland is scientifically well accepted.
Why pine?
But why did we choose radiata pine for our reforestation efforts instead of other tree species?
Even today, it is hard to find affordable and feasible alternatives to radiata pine. Affordable is the key word here. We are not a rich country and our liking for “Number 8 wire” solutions makes a virtue out of necessity – we don’t have the money to pay for anything fancier.
Radiata pine is a cheap and easy tree to establish and it grows fast and reliably. Planting native or other exotic trees, such as redwoods, is possible, but it costs more and needs more skill and care to grow a good crop.
The problem with radiata pine is that if grown as a commercial crop, it is clear-fell harvested after about 28 years.
The clear-felled land is just as erosion-prone as it was before trees were planted – with the added threat of large amounts of logging slash now mixed in with the erosion debris.
It can take six years or more after harvesting before the replanted pine trees cover the ground and once again provide protection to the soil.
Benefits
of pine come with a cost
If we take a long-term perspective, research shows that even a radiata pine forest that is clear-felled once every 28 years will still significantly reduce erosion, compared with a pastoral farm on erosion-prone hill country. This is because the erosion from the clear-felled forest is outweighed by the reduced erosion once the replanted trees cover the land.
However, this is not much comfort to communities in the path of the floodborne soil and logs from that clear-felled forest. It’s difficult to take a longterm perspective when your backyards and beaches are covered with tonnes of wood and soil.
Slash a byproduct of efficiency
Whatever benefits radiata pine forests bring, we need to transition forest management away from “business as usual” clear-felling on erosion-prone hill country.
This transition is possible, but one important problem is not often discussed. The pine forests are privately owned by a range of people including iwi, partnerships made up of mum-and-dad investors and large international forestry companies.
All these people have created or acquired these forests as an investment. A typical pine forest investment makes a good financial return, but this assumes normal efficient forestry, including clear-felling large areas with highly-productive mechanised logging gangs.
It has become clear that we need to manage forests differently from this large-scale “efficient” model to reduce the risk of erosion and slash from erosion-prone forests. Changing how we manage these forests will inevitably reduce the economic return, and forest investors will absorb this reduction.
Time for a permanent fix
If we go back to when the pine forests being harvested today were planted, the forests had a social value – not just in reducing erosion but in providing employment in rural areas where few jobs were available. This social value was recognised by government funding, initially through tree planting by a government department, the NZ Forest Service. With the rise of free market economics in the 1980s, such direct government investment was considered inefficient and wasteful.
The Forest Service was disbanded in 1987 and its forests were sold to forestry companies. However, the government continued to promote tree planting on erosion-prone land with subsidies to private investors. As these forests grew, they came to be considered purely as business investments and were bought and sold on that basis. When the time came to harvest the trees, the expectation was that these could be clear-fell harvested in the same conventional way as commercial forests growing on land with no erosion risk.
As erosion started occurring on the harvested sites, it became clear why these trees were originally planted as a social investment to protect the land and communities from soil erosion.
Aotearoa New Zealand has achieved control of erosion with a Number 8 wire solution- encouraging private investors to grow commercial pine forests on erosion-prone land. The problem with Number 8 wire solutions is that after a while the wire fails, and you have to find a permanent fix. Conventional commercial pine forestry was a good temporary solution, but now we need to find a more sustainable way to grow forests on our most erosion-prone lands – and it won’t be as cheap.

COMMUNITY NOTES
Baskets of Blessing – The Heart And Soul of Our Community
by Sue Fea
They’re the hearts with arms and legs of the Wakatipu community. Baskets of Blessing’s contribution has been so great that should its army of some 40 willing volunteers cease to operate that would leave a massive void. Started about 15 years ago by former local Tam Schurmann, Baskets of Blessing now serves an integral role in the Wakatipu and Central Otago’s social services.
In 2019 it became registered as a charitable trust – just in the nick of time. “It’s been getting busier ever since,” says Operations Manager Lee Nicolson. “Thankfully, we were geared up for the lifestyle changes that Covid and its restrictions and consequences have brought upon us.”
Demand for Baskets of Blessing’s nutritious frozen dinners, whipped up by local volunteers, including chefs, home cooks and retired country cooks, has escalated astronomically in recent years, as has demand for its food parcels and gift baskets.
Volunteers churned out 25,000 hours last year alone. They prepare and deliver some 400 meals a week, plus 25 - 40 food bags, and about 40 gift baskets a month.
Grateful recipients are always blown away by the much-welcomed kindness when it arrives at their door, with recipients anonymously nominated on the Baskets of Blessing website (www.basketsofblessing.co.nz).
The meals are prepared every Monday and Thursday at Arrowtown’s St John’s Presbyterian Church kitchen and hall with deliveries going out every Thursday.
“Our recipients are all facing unexpected life challenges, whether that be surgery, cancer treatment, struggles with a new-born baby, financial distress, bereavement, single parenting, anything,” says Lee.
Nominations come from across the community - midwives, nurses, counsellors, firefighters, teachers, or just caring family and friends. “Many people who are struggling don’t feel comfortable asking for help,” she says.
The frozen dinners – the likes of chicken casserole, beef stroganoff, lasagne, cottage pie and quiche are lifesavers to recipients, whipped up from ‘rescue food’ - produce and ingredients collected by Kiwi Harvest. “We use this food that supermarkets are obliged to discard by law, to cook and/or give to families or individuals finding things difficult,” says Lee.
Volunteers deliver the meals and food bags to those in need, using their own fuel and time, others make chutneys and crafts for the gift baskets, while some knit toys and baby clothing. Baskets of Blessing relies entirely on donations for
these baskets from toiletries and baby products to gardening equipment, kids’ toys and goodies.
Lee says the team happily welcomes any newcomers or ‘walk-ins’ at its twice weekly cook-ups (St John’s Church Arrowtown – 10am – 1.30pm, Monday and Thursday).
“Every day we receive nominations of people needing help. Very few people realise the scale that our operation has grown into,” she says. “We’re so proud of the significant contribution that we’re making to people’s lives in their time of need.”
Many families are responding to some very complex issues whether they be mental, physical or financial, or all three. “We like to feel we’re helping them get back on their feet,” she says. “Meals make life easier when you can’t cook, or a box of food when you’re struggling, or a gift basket to show someone cares. That’s gold.”
Every year the output increases in volume as the need escalates. A high percentage of recipients then ‘pay it forward’ as volunteers.
Anything from $5 to an hour of time, or excess garden produce can be dropped off at selected volunteers’ homes.

Fast Fashion - No, thanks!
Here’s why your dad’s 30 year old jacket is actually the best.
If you’re still sporting your father’s tweed blazer, elbow patches and all, or wearing mum’s netball uniform to practice - we want to know!
March is Slow Fashion Month and to celebrate, Sustainable Queenstown is giving away a shopping voucher for the Walk in Wardrobe. Dig out the oldest item of clothing you still wear (and if there’s a story to go with it, do tell!). Head to the post on our Facebook page to submit your photo and enter the draw to win!
So, what’s Slow Fashion Month all about?
We’re officially heading into fall, putting away the shorts and singlets, and major brands are already enticing us to update our wardrobes. As you congratulate yourself for scoring a deal on that brand new pair of jeans, we ask that you pause for a second and think about the real cost of your fast fashion fix.
In case you’re unfamiliar with the term, fast fashion refers to mass-produced, low cost clothing that is manufactured to respond to fleeting trends, to cycle in and out of shops rapidly. As a result, the fashion industry is responsible for double the emissions of the aviation and shipping industry combined. Textile Waste Reduction is an initiative of ResOURceful Communities, a program created by Wastebusters, and delivered in the Whakatipu by Sustainable Queenstown.
With this campaign, we encourage the community to reconsider their consumer habits. This month’s Green Drinks is a Sustainable Fashion Celebration! We are hosting a mega Clothes Swap, with volunteer stylists to help you ‘shop’ for the perfect items. We’ll have an alteration station featuring the lovely Kate from Stitch’n’Time, if any items you’ve purchased need just a little tweak to be perfect for you.
Our guest speakers are locals Nina from Tikki Studio and Jo from Coco’s Cabin who will share their experiences within the industry. QLDC is providing a Pop-up Library featuring titles about sustainable fashion practices. We also collaborated with local youth; student volunteers from Liger Leadership Academy have created something special to share with the community.
Throw in some bubbles, snacks, BYO drinks and a raffle to win a shopping voucher for yet another secondhand gem, Coco’s Cabin at Country Lane, and you’ve got the best Thursday night out!
Be a part of the solution!
With both budget and boutique options to shop pre-loved clothing, we can choose to make a difference with every purchase! By repairing rather than replacing clothing and upcycling or repurposing old clothes, we can slowly reverse the impact on our environment. We’ll be highlighting local businesses with sustainable options on social media- so keep an eye out!
