How to GSD – getting community “stuff” done in Queenstown
The proposed cycle and pedestrian bridge crossing of SH6 was made public this week. A few groups, Lightfoot and Queenstown Trails Trust included, have been working on this project for several years. It’s a win for walkers and cyclists but also great news for the whole community – a gap in the travel network is bridged and more climate-friendly movement will be possible. But why has community advocacy been so successful for this particular project? I had some time to reflect as we received news that the geo-tech investigation was underway and that a public announcement would soon come. What got this project over the line? It boils down to three key tips that I’ll share for others wanting to GSD:
Know the need and show it. You need to fully understand the problem. This means gathering data. Yes, a few locals will clock me as that creepy woman with the camera often spotted (illegally?) filming movement on SH6, and doing unsolicited interviews with people trying to cross a busy road. It’s because good visual evidence of a problem helps to support the ‘hard’ data – traffic movements, population growth, national speed limits etc. We are hard-wired to tune into people’s stories, so sharing tales about near misses and showing the danger helped others to see the need.
Collaborate. One voice means nothing. Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, he toa takitini – my strength is not as an individual, but as a collective. If you want to achieve anything, aligning yourself and your project with as many other groups as possible, will lead to a better outcome. Diversity of perspective helps to refine initial ideas. Evidencing the widespread appeal of your project is crucial. A great place to start is with your local Community Association. These groups wield power in Queenstown and are there to help the community get it what it needs. Consider how your project might benefit young people (ECE’s and schools will want to talk to you) or older people (Greypower, U3A, Rotary, Lions).
Be Constructive. Once you’ve got a solid project, start with the people at QLDC or other relevant entities. They actually want the best outcome too, because, guess what? Most of them are part of the community. So, be constructive and stay above board. As you’re working through a project that involves multiple stakeholders with someone else holding the purse strings, decisions might be made that you’re not happy with. Queenstown Whinge won’t get you far. Stay constructive while you’re negotiating for a better outcome. And remember, you’re only allowed to complain to a small number of trusted individuals who understand what it’s like to be that creepy person with the camera.

Since the start of 2021 The Queenstown Business Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Lakes Weekly, JobFix, Ignite Wanaka Chamber of Commerce and supported by QLDC, Lake Wānaka Tourism and DQ have been conducting a regular local business Confidence Survey. The first one for 2023 is now underway and getting a broad cross section of local businesses to participate is critical.
The aim is to provide greater insight into the health of local businesses, the local economy and a view on the trading environment.
The data we collect provides a gauge of business confidence across the district and enables the Chambers of Commerce, Destination Queenstown, Lake Wanaka Tourism and QLDC to collectively advocate for and support the Southern Lakes businesses.
This is the third year of the quarterly surveys which enable us to tell a story across the years. The more data we collect enables trends to be tracked and supports future decisions over time.
Please take the survey as every business story is different and your input is vital and the more companies that take the survey the more robust the data will be, including understanding how local sectors within the economy are faring. The survey is short, just 2-3 minutes to complete, and the results will be released once analysed and published in Lakes Business for everyone to see the compiled results.
The survey is open from Wednesday 6 March for all businesses in the Southern Lakes region, you don’t need to be a member of the Chambers to participate and closes on the 16 March.

Touching tributes to passionate kayaker
By Paul Taylor
Family and friends have paid tribute to a “special, unique and irreplaceable” 24-year-old man, who died while kayaking on a West Coast river late last month.
University of Otago graduate Jeremy Norbury, originally from Alexandra, lived in Queenstown, where he worked as a geologist for Geosolve Engineering consultants.
But it was for his adventurous spirit, humour and infectious energy he will be remembered most.
Childhood friend Sam McCulloch says Jeremy’s teen years were spent “racing slalom kayaks, kayaking off waterfalls, pushing the limits on apparel wearing, mountain biking, adventure racing, fending off the Rees girls, coaching, leaping off rocks, rattling off speeches centred around his hilarious take on the Fairlie Bakehouse & 100kph high fiving out of car windows”.
Kayaking was his absolute passion, which he pursued with a laser focus, competing in slalom and freestyle through his high school years, and representing NZ at the Freestyle World Championships. He attended the World Class Kayak Academy, a travelling high school for teens, visiting Eastern Canada, Pacific Northwest and Mexico.
“During this time, Jerm ticked off an array of the world’s best kayaking rivers before many of his friends kayaked outside of Central Otago,” Sam says. At Otago University, where he studied earth and ocean sciences, he was a critical member of the Otago University Kayak Club, coaching and inspiring beginners. He also joined the ski club, cheese club, and expanded his vast network of friends.
He moved to Queenstown aged 22, where he lived with his best mate Dan Sutherland.
Jeremy’s girlfriend Morgan Larkins and Dan said he was a good fit for Queenstown, but not for the usual reasons.
“He didn’t have much interest partying in town and if he did end up in a bar, he would have a raspberry coke in hand,” they said.
“For the Jermuckle, a Saturday night was best spent away in Milford or elsewhere, kayaking and camping with mates. If he was home, it would be with half a butterscotch and half a bottle of cream to a good light-hearted movie on the projector at the Earnslaw Terrace flat.” Sundays were spent playing disk golf (frolf) with his mum, dad, Dan and Morgan.
“He loved spending time with the people most important to him.” Friend and kayaking mentor Antz Longman says Jeremy was “approachable, down to earth and true to himself” and quickly made friends with everyone. “If you met Jeremy, you could only leave a conversation happier and with a bigger smile. His infectious energy radiated and we are blessed to call him a friend and a #baller.”
He shared his family’s passion for conservation and love of the outdoors, enjoying skiing, biking, tramping, fishing and other adventures.
Brother Marcus said: “Jaisy is the glue in our family. He is the never-ending source of positivity. He is mumma’s ray of sunshine, dad’s partner in crime and banter buddy, and his older brother’s role model. Jaisy’s objective at all times was to make his mum happy, his dad laugh and his brother proud. But most of all, he was a real mumma’s boy.
“My love for you Jaisy is immense, it’s deep down inside me. I see you everywhere I look and every time I close my eyes. You were everything to me, I feel empty without you. Going on in life without you is unimaginable, it’s heart wrenching. What I would give to hold you one more time, hold you close to my heart and tell you that I love you, I love you, more than you could ever know.”
Mum and dad, Dale and Grant, said: “To our darling young man, we’re in this river eddy right now holding your waka tight to our chest, but we have to push you out now my love into the current, back into the awa, to float you down to the moana, the open ocean. Dad’s waka, mumma’s waka, and Marcy’s waka will follow you one day my love and we will join you my sweet darling boy. We love you Jaisy... we love you.”

Imitation is not always the sincerest form of flattery
Now that the tourists have returned to Queenstown many locals and visitors have experienced anything but a kiwi welcome when they take a cab. Queenstown being busy again has brought the unwelcome return of operators and individuals who are moonlighting as reputable taxi companies or drivers.
One has decided to even imitate our name to pass themselves off as our company. It isn’t sincere and we aren’t flattered. Many of these imitators deliver unfair fares and less than stellar service that inevitably rubs off
Queenstown Taxis has been Queenstown’s ‘local’ taxi company for over 60 years. The company is locally owned and our drivers are also mostly locals and all uphold the
highest levels of service. We also have the largest fleet of taxi’s on the road 24/7.
When taking a taxi choose one that you can trust and if you do have a problem you can get a local person on the phone who will deal with any complaints professionally. We’re proud to be a part of the Queenstown transport landscape, offering a clean and safe service to both locals and tourists alike.
If you require a tour of the town or a wine tasting adventure, have a flight to catch or a conference to attend, Queenstown Taxis have got you covered, with affordable group transfers for up to 11 passengers and even a mobility taxi for those in need.
And in the unlikely event that we’re all booked up, give Green Cabs, Corporate Cabs, or Arrowtown Taxis a try as they too are reputable operators.
You can TRUST Blue Bubble Queenstown Taxis!

Calling all Queenstown blood donors
By Paul Taylor
People in Queenstown Lakes will have an opportunity to help save up to three lives at the end of this month.
The New Zealand Blood Service (NZBS) is set to host its first mobile blood drive in the district region since 2019.
The mobile drive will take place at St Margaret’s Church in Frankton from March 28-30.
Hours are as follows:
• Tuesday, March 28, 8.30am to 1.30pm
• Wednesday, March 29, 7.30am to 1.30pm
• Thursday, March 30, 7.30am to 12.30pm.
“It’s been a long time between collects since we were last in Queenstown Lakes Districts and we’re looking forward to our upcoming visit,” says Donor Relations Team Leader – Southern Atawhai Te Hau.
“One blood donation takes just an hour and can save up to three lives. This is a chance to make a real difference and give hope to someone in need.”
With spaces limited during the three-day mobile drive, donors are being encouraged to book an appointment as soon as possible to ensure they
don’t miss out on a rare chance to donate in their own backyard.
“There is an incredibly passionate community of blood donors in Queenstown Lakes District who have been quite vocal during the last four years about having an opportunity to donate in their neck of the woods.
“A big reason why we don’t often visit Queenstown Lakes District is because it poses some logistical and financial challenges for us in terms of flying donated blood back to Christchurch each day for processing in a timely manner once it has been collected.
“However, we have listened to the feedback we have received from donors and have been able to work around that by collecting earlier in the day. Now that we’re coming, our hope is the Queenstown Lakes District community turns out in force to ensure we can hit our collection targets during the three days we are here.”
NZBS is aiming to collect 200 donations while in Queenstown Lakes District. New donors are encouraged to find out if they are eligible at nzblood.co.nz and then book an appointment to donate.
Those who have previously been told they could not give blood due to their age or a medical condition are also asked to check the updated NZBS donor eligibility criteria.
To book an appointment to donate at the Queenstown mobile drive, visit nzblood.co.nz, download the New Zealand Blood Service Donor App or call 0800 448 325.
Did you know?
• Less than four percent of the eligible population in New Zealand currently donates
• NZBS needs to collect more than 5000 donations nationally each week to keep pace with current demand
• Blood only lasts 35 days
• All blood types are greatly needed, although there is more demand for A and O blood groups given 80 percent of the population has these blood types
• A blood donation is separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets after it has been processed, meaning several people can benefit from just one donation.

Motatapu back on track
By Paul Taylor
Aotearoa’s largest off-road sporting event made a welcome return in Arrowtown and Wānaka over the weekend.
Close to 4000 mountain bikers, runners and walkers took on the Motatapu on Saturday, held for the first time in three years after Covid-19 forced cancellations in 2021 and 2022.
Race Director and co-owner Gemma Peskett was delighted to be able to welcome competitors back to the Southern Lakes.
The Motatapu, now spread across six events, offers competitors once-a-year access to the stunning high-country terrain of the Motatapu valley, traversing the privately-owned Motatapu, Mt Soho and Glencoe Stations.
The ultra runners were the first athletes on course with an early 6am start for the challenging 52.5km run which traverses the ridges and valleys of the Harris Mountain Range.
“Brutal but awesome,” is how one competitor, Christian Mawson, described his day. Weston Hill was the first man home in an impressive time of 06:04:05.
The UDC Finance Mountain Bike featured the biggest field, with 1600 riders tackling the 47km course. The elite racers made it from Glendhu Bay through to Arrowtown in just over two hours.
The men’s race saw a particularly tight finish with Reef Roberts in first place in 02:10:37, followed by Taz Selfe in 02:12:23, only just beating Joshua Barley in 02:12:24.
Georgina Read was the overall winner of the women’s mountain bike.
“It’s a great race, it’s nice to be out there doing it again,” she said. “I’d like to come back again but maybe for the Coronet Loop next time. Something a little bit more technical, and it’s nice to do the new trails.”
Sam Shaw was the winner of the inaugural Coronet Loop Mountain Bike, storming out of the start gate and leading all the way around the 56km circuit to finish almost 16 minutes ahead of anyone else in the field. The popular Miners Trail also saw some fast finishers and plenty of sweaty but smiling faces. The 15.7km course follows a spectacular loop from Arrowtown, ascending the historic Tobin’s Track up onto the Crown Terrace before entering the magnificent Glencoe Station.
“I loved it,” said competitor Marie Ford, in the Female 60+ category. “So many good hills, it just keeps on going and going but the view is amazing. It’s an honest course, that’s for sure, but it was awesome.”
There was also a great sense of camaraderie out on the marathon course. Ella Fry was delighted to win the women’s title, with a sub four-hour finish of 3:41:22.
“I met so many people out on the course today,” she said. “You run past and they start talking to you, ask where you’re from and have a good chat.” She was met at the finish by her proud mum Leeanne Durry, who won the very first Motatapu marathon event in 2005.
Some 105 junior racers also took on the Jennian Homes Junior Trail Run, racing around a 4km loop and finishing with the big smiles that suggest they’ll be lining up again at the start line in years to come.
There was some sadness at the start of the Mountain Bike event, at Glendhu Bay, Wanaka, however, with the death of a 58-year-old man. Police were notified about 9.30am, and part of Motatapu Rd was closed for a short period of time. The death has been referred to the Coroner.
“We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the bereaved family,” Peskett said.

My Life Story
KIWI GOLFING LEGEND - GREG TURNER - TURNING PRO
Hailing from one of NZ’s most famous sporting families, little brother Greg wasn’t about to be beat.
Born in Dunedin in 1963, Greg Turner’s older brother Glenn – 16 years his senior, was captaining the NZ Cricket Team, while Brian, almost 20 years older was playing hockey for NZ.
“I played First XI cricket and hockey as a kid, representing Otago, but I was always compared to my brothers, grown men playing internationally,” says Greg.
At 13, Otago Boys High classmate David Skeggs, son of former Dunedin Mayor Cliff, took Greg to golf.
Greg was hooked, spending hours teeing off balls at the Balmacewen Golf Course. “With golf I wasn’t trying to live up to the expectations or reputations of others.”
“Glenn came home once from scoring four double centuries after a tour of the West Indies and was getting changed. I was about 12 and I saw he was black and blue all over and thought, ’This is what happens to you if you’re really good,” grins Greg.
Greg’s dad, who worked two jobs, was also a talented cyclist back in the day. At 18 Greg won a US College golf scholarship to study at the University of Oklahoma, catapulting him into an international career. The highest handicap he’d ever had was 7 and he’d already represented NZ in age-group teams. It was a far cry from Dunedin. “All I knew about America was from sitcoms and westerns. It was like the westerns.” His father sent letters every week with news clippings from home. Greg hit the ground running, making the University team straight away.
Within a year he’d made the second All American College team, ranked between 11th and 20th of all US College players that year.
Studying journalism, in two and a half years Greg had qualified sufficiently to turn pro, quitting College at 21. That wasn’t before his College football friends loaned him their gear to wear for a fun touch game. “I rolled my ankle and ended up in hospital where I overheard the nurses questioning whether I was actually a football player because I was ‘kind of puny’,” laughs Greg. Turning pro meant rubbing shoulders with established pro investors who sponsored the younger rookies, until after a year he could support himself. He played well launching into a top career in Hong Kong and on the Australasian Tour. “I won my third event – the NZPGA. It was really nice to have that under my belt.” He also did well on the Asian Tour, winning his second season there. By late 1985 he’d qualified for European Tour School, ranking third and winning his rookie season on the full European Tour in 1986.
While he had the talent, Greg says a good work ethic and “little bit of luck” helped.
It wasn’t all roses. He hit a slump in 1988 when English golf coach Denis Pugh gave him a complete swing rebuild. “I came home part way through that and won the NZ Open.”
Greg’s clocked 12 major international tour wins, and a President’s Cup, playing alongside the world’s best – Tiger Woods, Greg Norman, Frank Nobilo and Ernie Els, from the 1970s to 2010 when Rory Mcllroy became world number one. “Tiger was the best easily. He changed the game. Most world number ones are a quarter of a shot better than other top players, but he was half a shot. He had an extraordinary influence on the game.”
Winning the British Masters and Johnny Walker Classic in Australia, against 10 to 20 of the world’s top players, were career highlights, as was playing on the winning 1998 President’s Cup team – the rest of the world against America’s greatest golfers. “Jack Nicklaus was captain and gave me a ride back to Queenstown on his private jet. His limousine pulled up on the tarmac. Garrick Tremain pulled up alongside to collect me in his Subaru, towing a trailer covered in sheep dung.”
Invited to an executive box during the ‘Free Nelson Mandela’ concert in London in 1990, Greg recalls Dire Straits had just finished playing. “This woman came over and said, ‘When does Nelson Mandela play?” smiles Greg. Eight years later Greg got to meet him with the South African and Australian golf teams and told a very amused Mandela first-hand.
Greg officially retired from the pro circuit in 2003/04. Daughter Charlie was starting school and son Jack wasn’t far off. “I’d always said I’d stop then. Playing with many successful people through the years, they all said they regretted not spending enough time with their kids. It was universal.”
Since then he’s been designing golf courses and supporting junior golf through his Otago Golf Academy – a charitable trust he set up through the President’s Cup, which injects a lot of money into junior golf in the south. He’s served on Wakatipu High School’s Board too.
Greg’s been involved in about 30 golf course designs, from Millbrook, Christchurch and Wellington, to the UK. He’s now working on Mike Davies’ Hogans Gully course, due to start in six months, the 9-hole Gibbston course, and sailing legend Russell Coutts’ Crown Terrace private course, now at 21 holes.

Bird Flu in Cambodia
The World Health Organization is looking into two human cases of avian influenza in Cambodia after an 11-year-old girl died following an infection and after her father also tested positive for the H5N1 strain. The cases are the first known human infections of the bird flu in the Southeast Asian country since 2014. The development comes against the backdrop of a global bird flu outbreak since October 2021, including in the US where a record of more than 58 million birds have died since last February, pushing up egg prices. The flu normally spreads between sick poultry, which have a nearly 100% mortality rate when infected, and may occasionally spread from poultry to humans given sufficient exposure.

Brussels moves to ban Eurocrats from using TikTok
In an unprecedented move, the European Commission and Council of the EU have banned staff from using the Chinese social media app TikTok over security concerns, in the latest example of growing strains between Beijing and the West.
Western governments are increasingly alarmed by evidence that Chinese technology companies assist the Communist Party and its intelligence services in gathering vast amounts of data all over the world — with a particular focus on high-value political and security targets. The European Commission and the Council announced they had requested that their staff remove the TikTok app from their work and personal devices with work-related apps installed.
All Commission staff, who number about 32,000, were ordered last week to remove TikTok from their official devices and that they must also remove the app from their personal devices if they have any work-related apps installed. Alternatively, the staff members can delete work-related apps from their personal phones if they insist on keeping TikTok.

SUDOKU ANSWER
GETTING THE WORD OUT - NZ OPEN FOR BUSINESS
By Sue Fea
New Zealand’s tourism industry is working hard to combat any fall-out with international visitor markets from the devastating cyclone and flooding which has ravaged parts of the North Island.
While it’s early days and everybody in the industry is focused on feeling for and supporting those who’ve lost homes and businesses in the north, some operators have already experienced cancellations.
A lack of geographical knowledge can create the impression that the whole country is affected when realistically even most of Hawkes Bay and the Coromandel are open for business. It happened after news of the Christchurch earthquakes travelled around the globe, operators say.
The Rees CEO Mark Rose, whose hotel largely caters for international visitors says he’s already seen fall-out with cancellations from some American and Indian bookings, based on what they’ve heard. “However, they’re small in the scheme of things,” he says. “We’ve been in contact with our agents in the US, people who are on the road. Some visitors were going to cancel Rotorua, but I said, No! Rotorua is open,” says Mark. “They just don’t have that awareness of where places are in NZ.”
North Island operators have had terrible problems finding enough alternative beds for affected visitors. “They’ve had major disruption. It’s been horrific for them, especially right after Covid,” says Mark, whose staff are fundraising for cyclone and flood victims with the hotel owners matching what they raise. That money will go to Wakatipu High School in its bid to fundraise to support families of Hastings Boys High School students.
Tourism Export Council CEO Lynda Keene says there will undoubtedly be cancellations with February, March and April predominantly the international visitor season. Visitors in the country when the disasters struck, who’d booked their own travel, were worst affected, but those booked through offshore travel agents and inbound tour operators were less so. “Some visitors cancelled and decided not to travel the rest of NZ.”
Anecdotally, inbound operators are seeing some cancellations for March and April, she says. Key international markets that have returned since borders re-opened, include Australia, US, Canada, Singaporeans and UK visitors. Operators around NZ feel for the affected regions still under a lot of stress, she says. “A lot of families have lost homes and businesses. Their world’s turned upside down.”
Totally Tourism Director Mark Quickfall says the Tourism Export Council has been proactive keeping operators informed about air, roads and ferry sailings and other vital information. He hasn’t noticed any cancellations yet. “We’ve learned to respond quickly after the Christchurch earthquakes, and then Covid,” he says. “One week we were open for business then the next week we were closed.” He believes NZ will manage those communications well as a result, getting the word out internationally that the rest of NZ, and much of the affected areas, are still open for business. “There’s a huge amount of
sympathy among South Island operators. Here we are living in sunshine, a normal life, and we really feel for them,” says Mark.
Queenstown operators are always generous to respond to situations like this. Mark says he wouldn’t be surprised if key tourism organisations in the country come up with a plan to offer coordinated kindness in some form to cyclone and flood victims further down the track. “We would be more than happy to be part of that.”
Neither Millbrook Resort nor Novotel Queenstown Lakeside general managers have noticed any major fall-out. Novotel’s Jim Moore says, understandably, he lost some insurance conference bookings when the floods hit Auckland. It’s also been harder for suppliers to source food and vegetables, says Jim, but great to see this community backing fundraising initiatives with a need so great.
Tourism Industry Aotearoa CE Rebecca Ingram says manuhiri (visitors) were well looked after by tourism and tour operators, the i-SITE network and those on the ground, which should hopefully set NZ in good stead overseas. Visitors were mostly very understanding and coped well, with many naturally changing their itineraries in response to spend more time in different parts of NZ. Offshore travel partners are being made aware that many parts of NZ were unaffected, and continued to welcome visitors.
“Tourism NZ and inbound tour operators’ work to ensure that travel trade partners have up to date information which is invaluable at times like this,” says Rebecca.
“The extreme weather events have offered us timely, real-life examples of why a regenerative tourism system is the only way forward for Aotearoa New Zealand,” says Rebecca.
Tourism NZ Communications Manager Candice Johanson says offshore news coverage was minimal and didn’t last long. “Our offshore trade teams are working closely with offshore trade to ensure they have accurate information to support any booking queries or concerns,” says Candice.
Air NZ General Manager Domestic Iain Walker says the immediate focus has been those devastated by the floods and cyclone, offering special low fares, increase travel flexibility and connecting the Tairāwhiti and the Hawkes Bay region with a temporary direct flight. “While we’re seeing some travellers change or cancel their plans, this is also freeing up seats for those urgently needing to travel in and out of these regions.” There’s still strong inbound demand to all regions in NZ.

COMMUNITY NOTES
What’s all the buzz about?
by Jessica Allen
Despite an increase in bee disease throughout the country, Queenstown’s honey trade is reporting a bumper year. The industry throughout Aotearoa has seen an increase in American Foulbrood (AFB), a disease that kills honey bee colonies. The bacteria can take many months to kill the bees and in the meantime they may infect other colonies.
Cases of AFB last year were up 35% on the previous year. While Otago has low numbers, beekeepers have noticed an increase but say it’s easily manageable if people know what to look out for. Nick Cameron is the General Manager of Buzzstop, a bee farm and local producers of honey based in Frankton. He says that one honeycomb could have billions of spores, which makes it difficult to get rid of.
“It’s definitely around the basin and always has been. Part of that’s to do with that there are a huge number of hobbyists who maybe don’t know what to look out for. There are people who start beekeeping with a hiss and a roar and they fall in love with it, but if they just let their hive go – eventually it may develop AFB and die. All the other bees in that vicinity go and rob that hive, drinking the infected honey full of AFB spores and taking it back to their hives, and all of the sudden everyone has AFB in that area,” says Nick. Despite this, it’s been a strong season. Buzzstop processes a lot of honey for beekeepers, as it is one of the only places in the area that offer this service, and Nick says that every beekeeper he’s dealt with has had a great year.
Neal Mcaloon is the founder of Bee the Change, a company that facilitates thriving bee colonies through beehive sponsors. Their hives are all around the district and focus on enabling environmental education and pollination initiatives for local communities. They’ve also reported a good season, although some of the fires in the region, burning flowers off, had an impact. Part of the issue is beekeepers spreading AFB through moving equipment around. Neal believes the region could eradicate it, especially in Queenstown given our location between the lakes and the mountains means that this would be possible. He’s also a lecturer at Otago Polytechnic, and has had 120 students learning the ins and outs of beekeeping over the past three years.
“Otago Polytechnic offer apiculture courses that run throughout a season –you can’t learn to beekeep in an afternoon,“ says Neal. “The majority of the students are hobbyists – it’s really good to see that they’re learning properly and they’re all attending the American Foulbrood course provided. I would suggest that anyone looking to get into beekeeping attend the AFB course –I do think it’s good to get some form of training. It’s good for the community if everybody knows what they’re doing.”
Bridge plans given huge boost
By Paul Taylor
A pedestrian and cycle bridge across a busy section of State Highway 6 in Queenstown is a step closer after winning the backing of Waka Kotahi.
The bridge, originally proposed by Queenstown Trails and lobbied by the Lightfoot Initiative, would connect Quail Rise to Glenda Drive, spanning SH6 on the rise up from Shotover Bridge.
It would be part of the Whakatipu Active Travel Network’s A2 route, providing a more direct and safer route between the Shotover Country and Lake Hayes Estate subdivisions and Frankton.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has now committed to funding the bridge, subject to geotechnical investigations.
Geotechnical testing is now being undertaken to test foundation options on site, and if the plan is feasible, design plans and further community and Mana Whenua engagement will follow.
While a bridge was not included in initial plans Waka Kotahi Director of Regional Relationships, James Caygill says a scope change has been approved.
“When we listened to the community about what improvements they wanted to see in this area there was a strong preference for a bridge over the busy road. We took this feedback on board and have approval to investigate a new bridge including funding for design and construction.”
The bridge would effectively mean people can cross the historic Shotover River / Kimiākau bridge and continue on into Frankton without having to go down into the Shotover Delta or tackle the dicey road level crossing in front of Bunnings.
Queenstown Trails CEO Mark Williams says the proposed bridge across State Highway 6 would be a valuable addition to Queenstown’s extensive cycling network.
“We’ve long advocated for a safe way for our community, especially students cycling to school, to cross the busy state highway that intersects our trails. And we’re delighted Waka Kotahi is moving ahead and considering plans to construct what will be an important piece of infrastructure for the area.”
Amanda Robinson, of Queenstown’s Lightfoot Initiative shared his views.
“State Highway 6 sits at the heart of the Active Travel network and the proposed bridge will create the connection we need to keep our community moving safely. This is a great example of what can happen when community organisations work in partnership to advocate for change. I feel confident in saying that the community appreciates Waka Kotahi’s flexibility in finding solutions that will benefit us all.”
Whakatipu Active Travel aims to create an integrated network of trails for walking and cycling that connects to public transport, providing a genuine alternative to getting around by car.
It is designed to connect key destinations such as Arrowtown, Arthur’s Point, Kelvin Heights, Jacks Point, Lake Hayes Estate and Shotover Country, Fernhill, Frankton and Queenstown.
A programme of work to deliver new walking and cycling facilities, as outlined in the completed business case, has been approved by QLDC Council and joint funding for the first package of the new network has been approved by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
More detail on all the trails can be found on the QLDC website.

AUSSIES RUSH TO BOOK QUEENSTOWN SKI HOLIDAYS
The Aussies are coming this winter… in their droves.
A boomer Queenstown and Wanaka snow season last year has Australians scrambling to book their winter ski holidays way earlier than usual.
Rees Hotel CEO Mark Rose says bookings are “booming already” and he’s never seen it like this before. “People are getting in early. There are dates I’m virtually booked out for July and August – about 60 to 70 percent full already, and even filling up into the first five days of September,” says Mark. “It’s quite extraordinary that it’s this early. I’m gobsmacked.” He would normally head to Australia in April and May to drive those winter bookings in.
Leading Australian ski wholesaler Sno’n’Ski Holidays managing director Daniel Walker expects to send almost 5000 Aussies to NZ to ski this season, almost all of them to Queenstown. There’s overwhelming interest among Aussies for international travel this year with Queenstown one of the top four “hot destinations” for skiers alongside Aspen Snowmass, Whistler and Niseko. “We’ve seen strong early enquiry for Queenstown,” says Daniel. Passengers booked in February 2023 were 27 percent up on February 2019. Conversion of enquiry is up 63 percent on pre COVID. Customers are looking to buy flight and accommodation packages all in one place.
By Sue Fea
“Aussie skiers are looking to ski abroad in 2023 after three years being stuck at home.”
Sno’n’Ski Holiday’s has seen “a significant decline” in Australian destinations this year. “Most Aussies are realising they can get to Queenstown faster than they can get to Perisher or Thredbo. Even with higher Trans-Tasman airfares, our customers are seeing the value in Queenstown, and taking advantage of the stronger Aussie dollar.”
However, Daniel says they have concerns “around the guest experience in Queenstown”. “In 2022 we saw disruption with airport transfers due to traffic and staffing, a lower hotel service due to short staffing, and frustrated customers who couldn’t get restaurant reservations while in town. We’re looking at preparing our customers with more targeted travel tips to prepare them and make the most out of their stay.”
Higher airfares have some budget to mid-range clients staying local, says Daniel. Sno’n’Ski Holidays sent 24 percent of its overall skiers to NZ pre-Covid.
“We’re on track to see significant overall growth and market share in 2023,” says Daniel. Customers are booking earlier, staying longer and increasing their overall spend, creating a ‘golden age’ of travel for the ski industry.
He’s seen strong growth into Sno’n’Ski Holidays’ core hotel partners who encourage wholesale bookings. “Pre COVID, 80 percent of our business was from travel agents. “It’s encouraging to see most hotels still offering great wholesale rates for the long stay Aussie customer,” he says.
NZSki CEO Paul Anderson says they’re seeing this strong inquiry out of Australia. “Australian agents are seeing real demand, but they’re starting to see issues around peak periods finding available airline seats and accommodation,” says Paul. Great snow last season has skiers and boarders getting in early, but Paul says Queenstown’s seen as really good value compared with Australian mountains. Early bird season pass sales were up late last year and online sales have also increased slightly. There’s been a strong increase in NZSki
sales and it’s a good start, he says. Demand is strong through the first week of September for the Snow Machine Festival.
“The worker holiday market is starting to rebuild itself,” says Paul. Immigration NZ has been working to get those workers back and the numbers are “starting to replenish”. NZSki is currently working on more proposals to aid with staff accommodation problems.
Destination Queenstown CEO Mat Woods says while February and March were traditionally when Aussies booked Queenstown ski holidays, that’s not been seen for three years due to Covid restrictions. “We’re seeing a stronger demand this year on the back of a great season last year.” Mat says trends are moving back to Queenstown’s traditional 60 percent domestic, 30 percent Australian, and 10 percent international, ski market. That’s been aided by full air connectivity between Australia and Queenstown and Australia and Christchurch. “Christchurch has its Emirates flight back from Sydney. Whether we see that flow on here or not, we’ll have to wait and see,” he says.
Millbrook Resort’s Brian Howie says, while staff accommodation is still an issue, the situation is improving slightly. “We’ve picked up more accommodation with the long-term lease on an Arrowtown house where staff can transition until they’re settled somewhere.” He’s got good ski season bookings rolling in from Aussie and NZ for the July holidays and conference and incentive business strong a year out.

Acclaimed one-women play comes to the region
by Jess Allen
Auckland actress Cassandra Woodhouse will bring her company’s first production, Hanna, to Arrowtown and Lake Hawea from 12 March. The gripping story by Sam Potter follows a young mum who discovers that her daughter isn’t actually hers after a mix-up at the hospital. It presents an emotional look at what nature and nurture really mean.
The show has already been performed in Auckland and parts of the North Island with an overwhelmingly positive response. Cassandra is based in Auckland and is a mother herself, who can resonate with Hanna’s (her character’s) quest to be a mother and find wellness. Cassandra undertook her own pursuit of wellness after struggling with issues such as anxiety and depression – her perspective changed with the birth of her own daughter. She is really grateful to Arts on Tour for helping to bring this touching performance to stages around Aotearoa.
“It’s a story about a young mum who gets given the wrong baby at birth and doesn’t find out until the child is three. She then has to go on a journey of meeting the other family and meeting her biological child – on a much deeper level I think it’s a really beautiful story about motherhood, how we love who we love, nature versus nurture, and economic privilege – this mum was quite under resourced and that shaped her experience, whereas the other family had more money.
“There are a lot of themes throughout which are really impactful. One of the beautiful themes, I think, is how women come together in the end and how these two women of two different children have to figure this thing out. That’s a really lovely message – how mothers and how women really do rise up in the face of challenge and do what’s best for the children – it’s always a journey,” says Cassandra.
Another key message that is portrayed throughout the show is that family isn’t always just blood, but rather made up of the people that we meet along the way. Jennifer Ward-Lealand directed the production and has worked within New Zealand’s theatre, film and television industry for more than 40 on over 60 productions. Her and Cassandra grew close while working together.
“It’s been really beautiful working with her because the story is ultimately about two women that came together in the end that would have unlikely met otherwise – a young mum needing some mentorship and guidance from someone who is more experienced and has more resources. It’s a similar story of Jennifer and I – the parallel line there of just wanting to do something and navigating that on my own but having her guidance has just been amazing. Also, all the chats we had about everything –motherhood, women, work, and the world, which all filters in. One of the reviews we had in Auckland was really special because it picked up on the synergy of the both of us,” says Cassandra.
Hanna will be performed on Sunday, 12 March, at Lake Hawea Community Centre, Tuesday 14, at Central Stories in Alexandra and Wednesday 15, at Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall. You can find out more about the production and pick up tickets at aotnz.co.nz/touring-next
Broker Gallery is breaking the mould
by Jess Allen
The start of 2023 has been a busy one for Broker Gallery’s Founder & Director, Marc Blake. In addition to winning the supreme award at the Craigs Aspiring Art Prize, he headed up to Auckland to take part in the Aotearoa Art Fair, which ran 2-5 March, where Broker was the first ever Queenstown gallery selected to take part.
Broker closed out 2022 with a group exhibition called The Insiders, which continued to show into 2023. That exhibition was the fourteenth show for Broker since it opened in January 2021. The gallery is now preparing for its next exhibition – Marc is always trying to bring new ideas and approaches to contemporary art and is excited to see more facilities opening within the region.
One of Marc’s latest works, and the one that won him the Craigs Aspiring Art Prize supreme award, was also on display in Auckland. Happy Birthday is a printed digital artwork that has one small square painted on it. Marc has been using technology with his artwork for many years – he started drawing with computers when he was nine.
“It’s called Happy Birthday because the main image that became the catalyst for the work was a photo of my wife holding our son on his second birthday. That led to the rest of the work being created, which is a bit of a new direction for me – that’s the first one I’ve ever shown publicly, so to win that award was pretty amazing.
“They had a record number of entries this year with around 300 artists, and they doubled the prize money – that probably attracted more, including myself. I thought it was a good time to enter. It was nice to go over there and have a look at all the work,” says Marc.
It’s a thought-provoking piece and at first glance it appears to be a physical painting, and many people had thought this when looking at it. Happy Birthday includes photographs of other paintings Marc has done. Over the past couple of years, he has realised that the digital aspect is really the work and that the painting side of it didn’t always need to exist in the final piece anymore.
“When you look at it closely, you realise that there are photos of canvases, and things that I’ve used on there are all enlarged. The scale of the weave of the canvas you’re looking at is fake because it’s also printed on canvas – there’s just multiple levels of illusion happening, which is kind of what I’m playing with. If you look at them across the room, you may not know that, but I don’t really think of them as paintings anymore. I don’t really know what they are – it’s up to someone else to try and figure that out.”
You can stay up-to-date with Marc’s work and what’s upcoming at Broker Gallery at brokergalleries.com
Welcome to the 10th WĀNAKA FESTIVAL OF COLOUR
The past three years have taught us all the importance of the arts, and of shared experience, to our collective wellbeing. The value of laughing, crying, dancing, and thinking, together in a room full of friends. So, let's do that.
The Wānaka Festival of Colour is the flagship arts event for the Southern Lakes region. Set against the autumn colours of the Upper Clutha Basin, the week-long festival offers a rich and diverse programme, celebrating the very best of the arts world.
DANCE
WOMAN OF WORDS - ROYAL NEW ZEALAND BALLET
Woman of Words - Royal New Zealand Ballet will be performing at Lake Wānaka Centre on Monday, 27 March, at 6pm, 8:30pm
Woman of Words is a newly created biographical dance work, celebrating the extraordinary life of Katherine Mansfield. Exploring her personal stories, the work sees the world through Katherine's eyes in a series of epistolary moments, gathered from letters to her closest friends and loved ones.
Katherine's intense, captivating and all-too short life is brought to the stage using dance, text, colour and sound. Beginning with her early years growing up in Wellington, to the height of London bohemia and the Bloomsbury group, to her death at the age of 34, Woman of Words chronicles Katherine's journey and her passion for creativity, love, and life.
COMEDY MODERN MĀORI QUARTET NGĀ 80'S
Ngā 80's will be performing at The Pacific Crystal Palace on Friday, 1 April
What happens when you find a worn cassette at the bottom of your closet with Ngā 80's scribbled on it? You blast it from your Cortina’s stereo, wind the windows down, feel your mullet slap the back of the car seat and fang the Holden to the Pā for a family gathering! The undisputed hit of the 2022 Auckland Live Cabaret Season Nga 80's will have you singing along, dancing along, and uncontrollably laughing along with the Modern Māori Quartet - a good looking, suave contemporary Māori showband in the vein of forebears such as the Hi-Marks, Māori Volcanics Showband, Māori Hi-Five, and the Quin Tikis.
THEATRE MAUREEN-HARBINGER OF DEATH (AUSTRALIA)
Maureen-Harbinger of Death will be performing at Lake Wānaka Centre on Friday, 31 March, and Saturday, 1 April
Framed by velvet drapes and bedecked with Jatz cracker crumbs and cigarette ash, Maureen invites you into her bohemian living room. She's here to take you on an intimate journey brimming with witty repartee, well-worn life advice, an exotic array of friends now gone and the dauntless potency of limitless imagination. With exquisite storytelling, writer and performer Jonny Hawkins transforms into Maureen: a razor-tongued doyenne of Kings Cross in its heyday. Co-created by Nell Ranney, this poignantly funny solo show takes inspiration from Hawkins’ friend, a self-described “working class glamour queen“ and one of life’s true eccentrics.
An intimate celebration of matriarchal power, this is one swansong you won’t want to miss!
MUSIC SIMON O'NEILL & NZTRIO IN CONCERT
Simon O'Neill & NZTrio in Concert will be performing at Lake Wānaka Centre on Saturday, 1 April
JENNY MITCHELL
Jenny Mitchell and The Mitchell Twins will be performing at The Pacific Crystal Palace on Thursday, 30 March
Given that Gore is the official country music capital of Aotearoa, it will come as no surprise that this is from where Jenny Mitchell hails.
Currently touring the US with her twin sisters, Maegan and Nicola, Jenny is becoming a name on the lips of country aficionados around the world and on the notepads of music reviewers.
TARARUA - BIRD LIKE MEN
COMMUNITY WĀNAKA NEW WORLD COMMUNITY DAY
The New World Wānaka Community Day takes place around the Wānaka CBD on Saturday, 1 April
Internationally renowned and Grammy award winning New Zealand tenor Simon O'Neill is joining forces with ‘national treasure’ NZTrioAmalia Hall, Ashley Brown and Somi Kim. This is a special chance to hear Simon O’Neill outside of concert halls and opera houses for an intimate concert featuring Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and a selection of Strauss Lieder. Filled with deep longing, moments of joy and turmoil, these songs have been arranged for piano trio by New Zealand composers Ken Young and Alex Taylor.
Jararua performs at The Lake Wānaka Centre on Sunday, 2 April
The quartet of Ariana Tikao, Ruby Solly, Alistair Fraser and Phil Boniface combine taonga pūoro, waiata, karakia and pūrākau (story) with a strong southern Māori influence, partnered with the western instrumental elements of the cello and double bass.
Tararua draws on personal history - whānau manuscripts of Tikao and kōrero from Kāi Tahu Whānui - ancient indigenous stories and knowledge, and the dark beauty of Aotearoa to weave together sound worlds from both te ao Māori and te ao Pākehā as well as echoing influences of jazz and folk.
Returning to the Festival is the ever-popular New World Wānaka Community Day where the lakefront takes centre stage for a series of free events, performances and installations. Local dance troupes from United Dance Crew and Central Point will be showcasing their new dance and music performances: The Biggest Little Circus will astound with their highly skilled juggling and aerial acrobatics, while Wasabi, Queenstown’s Japanese Community Choir, will be performing on this side of the hill. From further afield, Melbourne couple Jim & Barb are about to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, remaining co-dependent and dysfunctional all this time. Come and have a cup of tea with them, ask questions and they will give you relationship advice...
These are just a few of the performances that will be brightening up the streets of Wānaka on Saturday, April 1.
An important element when bringing together the Wānaka Festival of Colour programme has always been the need to engage and involve our younger audiences. A number of the Festival artists run workshops and put on special performances for the local schools, offering Upper Clutha students of all ages the opportunity to engage up close with world class performers.
ARO
Aro will be performing at The Luggate Hall on Sunday, 2 April, at 11am
THE ADVENTURES OF ALVIN SPUTNIK: DEEP SEA EXPLORER
The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer will be performed at The Hāwea Flat Hall on Wednesday, 29 March, at 6pm, and Thursday, 30 March, at 11am & 6pm
NEW OWNER
New Owner will be performed at The Hāwea Flat Hall on Friday, 31 March, at 6pm, and on Saturday, 1 April, at 11am & 6pm
Aro is husband and wife duo Charles and Emily Looker. They met while both studying a Bachelor of Music at the University of Auckland, where they discovered they share a passion for the power of language and music to tell stories and remind us of our cultural identity.
This really is fun for the whole family as Emily and Charles share waiata celebrating the marine life that lives in the waters off the coasts of Aotearoa along with award-nominated waiata about the native birdlife of this land. All this is woven together with strands of soul, haka and jazz to create a truly memorable performance that audiences of all ages will relish. A Festival must for families and children who love to sing and dance!
From Australian storytellers Arielle Gray and Tim Watts, Alvin Sputnik is an extraordinary multi-media, one-man puppet show that tells a tale of enduring love and the end of the world. As sea levels continue to rise and billions die, it falls to Alvin Sputnik, whose wife has recently died, to journey to the depths of the ocean to find a new place for humankind to live.
Festival Director Charlie Unwin was recently heard saying that of the five hundred or so shows that he has produced over his career, Alvin Sputnik is undoubtedly in his top three. There's really no greater endorsement than that.
We don’t want to give too much away so please just trust us on this and join Alvin on his one-man mission to save the world.
From the same storytellers as The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer comes New Owner, a sensitive new show for all ages about loss, friendship and new beginnings.
Bart is a boisterous puppy waiting to be chosen from the animal shelter. Mabel is a lonely widow, trying to fill the hole in her heart. The day they find each other is the beginning of a profound friendship - but Mabel is old, and Bart is young - and suddenly alone.
Combining puppetry, live action and animation, New Owner takes us on a world of adventure through a dog's eyes.

New general manager at The Ivy Box gallery
by Jess Allen
The Ivy Box on the Queenstown lakefront has a new general manager and is launching a new exhibition shortly. Sian Gillanders will take the helm at the contemporary art gallery, which is home to works that stimulate the senses. Owner Lynda Hensman is excited for the future under Sian’s guidance.
Lynda opened the Ivy Box in 2015 as a space for artists with unique perspectives and passion to share their work without inhibitions. The building was originally a butcher’s shop and had a special look to it with walls covered in climbing ivy. Despite the distinctiveness of the building, it was old and cold, so it was transformed and reopened in spring of 2021. Lynda will be shifting her attention on a different project and believes Sian is the perfect person to be managing the gallery. Sian has a diverse background, working originally as a top-notch kitchen designer before buying a campervan and a surfboard – she taught herself to surf whilst travelling up and down the North Island. She also headed to Europe where she did part of the Camino de Santiago. During her travels she took some time to reset and is back in Queenstown, refreshed and ready. “Sian’s presence will create and inject more energy,” says Lynda. “I’m not saying I’m jaded, but I’ve been in this business for a long time – plus I produce my art, so it’s time for me to actually sit back and just produce the art and let someone else run the gallery, which I think is a really good idea. She will create a different vibe – it’ll still be an amazing gallery but there will be an edge to it, I believe, with Sian. She’s very approachable, she’s great with people, she’s vivacious and she’s so enthusiastic.”
First on Sian’s list will be organising the upcoming exhibition at Ivy Box. The display will feature Christchurch artist Mandy Joass, a fulltime sustainable sculptor whose work has been shown in more than 30 exhibitions. She graduated from Ilam in 2015 with a BFA in Sculpture. Her work uses recycled aluminium Venetian blinds, which serve as an industrial placeholder for harakeke. Her latest work is a contemporary conversation with ancestral knowledge, referencing early kete and tukutuku patterns and meanings.
“At one point Mandy was marketing venetian blinds. There happened to be a surplus of them and she started playing around with the slats –then she evolved into this incredible sculptor that weaves these beautiful woven venetian blind sculptures. I’m really excited to have her work with Sian – I think the two will marry in really beautifully.”
The Ivy Box art gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday and by appointment. You can give them a call to find a suitable time for an appointment on 027 305 5826, or just pop in – it’s located along the beautiful lakefront at 134 Park Street.

Lights, camera, action
By Paul Taylor
Queenstowners will likely have another chance to marvel at the Aurora Australis this week after one of the best displays in recent years. Hundreds of photographers headed out after dark last Monday to capture the dazzling Southern Lights.
Georgia Wallis, who captured this stunning shot, says there were more than 50 people at Jack’s Point lakefront alone, prompted by the Queenstown Aurora Australis Facebook group, run by well-known local photographer Blair Pattinson.
“It was so bright you could see it with the naked eye, you didn’t need the camera skills or gear to appreciate it,” Wallis says.
“For a period of about 20 minutes, it just kept getting brighter and brighter. There were beams coming up everywhere, red and pink, which are apparently rarer than the green and purple ones.”
Wallis says she’d been at the beach about an hour before the display started. “I was about to leave and was just taking pictures of the mountain at that point, and then in a corner of one of the pictures I saw a beam. We turned around and you could see it in the sky. It’s the best I’ve ever seen.”
Both Aurora Australis and Aurora Borealis were particularly active due to solar storms, which fire out high-energy particles, which then interact with the earth’s magnetic field. They hit atoms in the upper atmosphere creating a glowing field of excited gas, causing the incredible natural light shows. More auroras are expected this week due to what is known as a ‘period of solar maximum’. Every 11 years, the sun is particularly active, with lots of sun spots near the surface.
South Island is likely to get the best displays, with the aurora viewable close to the horizon on a clear night.
Wallis, who works at Shotover Primary, says the lakefront near Jack’s Point, looking towards Kingston, is a good spot because there’s not so much light pollution.
“You can capture it on a camera, using a low exposure so you get loads of light, but there were people there taking shots with iPhones, and they picked it up.”
Fifield confirmed as Chamber boss
By Paul Taylor
Acting Queenstown Chamber of Commerce chief executive Sharon Fifield has been appointed to the role on a permanent basis.
Chamber board chair Angela Spackman told members Fifield has accepted the board’s offer, three months after replacing Ruth Stokes as CEO.
“The Board have been impressed with how Sharon has led the Chamber through the last few months and can see a great future with her as our CEO,” Spackman says.
“Sharon has shown to have excellent relationships with key stakeholders and is well respected among our business community. We have been particularly pleased with her advocacy work with both local and national government representatives.”
Fifield joined the Chamber in November 2022 as Head of Business Growth, after three-and-a-half years as Senior Economic Development Advisor at Queenstown Lakes District Council.
A month into the new role, she agreed to step up as Acting CEO after Stokes announced she was leaving to pursue other interests.
“This appointment allows stability and surety to our small but powerful team at Queenstown Business as they continue to provide our membership with many great events, training, and networking opportunities,” Spackman says.
