Report finds that it’s good to talk about mental health

I’m so proud of our little trust this week.

Our locally-grown charity is making a bit of noise as we share the findings of a pilot project that started here in the Whakatipu, but could have a wide impact in terms of reshaping how we help communities to look after their mental health.

You may have seen the adverts for the GoodYarn Community workshops this past year, but what you might not know is that the project is unique to Queenstown Lakes.

The pilot idea came in the wake of seeing first-hand the devastating effects COVID had on our unique, diverse and vibrant community. We could see that there was so much more we needed to do to ensure that our local people who were doing it tough could be supported to navigate the challenging months that lay ahead. But what grew out of a crisis, has now created a new model of hope for how communities might be supported to improve and foster mental wellbeing.

The report highlights that helping communities to talk about mental health and increase their skills, knowledge and understanding can reap large rewards for their wellbeing.

It also recognises that the success of the pilot project is down to the passion and innovation of our local facilitators, who chose to use their knowledge of our local community and their experience of mental health challenges to actively help others to know how to navigate tough times. People who knew how to connect with their community and could make sure gatherings were culturally safe and at times and locations that suited. From school halls, to rugby clubs, parenting group settings and we even delivered some workshops at the kitchen table. Our team were always guided by what our community needed.

In total, 267 people in the Queenstown Lakes District participated in the GoodYarn workshops during the pilot, nearly half of whom (44%) had English as a second language. 97% of participants reported an increase regarding mental health knowledge and skills. That’s quite something.

Participants told us the most valuable information was about the signs and symptoms of mental illness, suicide prevention awareness and links to resources. We realised that this important education shouldn’t be hidden away but made accessible so our communities can be empowered to support their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around them. We also learnt that if we empower communities with mental health education, we can create a ripple effect that has a much wider reach.

We are continuing to run the GoodYarn Community Programme in 2023 so if you haven’t made it to a workshop yet, don’t miss this chance that other communities don’t have. It may be a lifesaver Information about upcoming workshops is available at www.headlight.org.nz

Destination Greentown - carbon zero plan given green light

Queenstown Lakes regenerative tourism strategy, which includes the ambitious Carbon Zero 2030 goal, has been given a ringing endorsement by the district’s councillors.

The 61-page strategy has been developed over the past two years by Destination Queenstown (DQ), Lake Wanaka Tourism (LWT), and the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC), with input from Kai Tahu and the Department of Conservation.

It was presented to Queenstown’ elected members at a full meeting of QLDC yesterday, Thursday, 10 February.

Their unanimous approval means it will now set the direction for the visitor industry for the next seven years.

That will see the industry focus on decarbonisation, promoting biodiversity, and becoming a world leader in green tourism, as well as supporting the community’s social and cultural life.

Mayor Glyn Lewers, who campaigned on tackling climate change, told councillors they all had to push the destination management plan as individuals.

“It’s a visceral drive for me personally and as the leaders of this district we have to drive it,” he said.

The ‘Travel to a thriving future’ strategy outlines the current state of tourism, defines regenerative tourism and outlines 23 key projects to be delivered. These range from developing arts, culture and heritage, to zero waste and pollution, to emergency and climate adaptation preparedness.

The keystone project of the strategy, is to rapidly cut emissions and make the visitor economy carbon zero by 2030. The commitment includes Scope 3 emissions – all emissions from air travel and ground transportation. Scoping work has already begun on how the region will decarbonise the visitor economy, with initial results expected next month.

DQ chief executive Mat Woods says: “It’s good to have the official endorsement from our councillors who represent our community. “Now it really is time to get on with the 23 projects on the list. I’m looking forward to having the governance in place and setting up our project teams.”

The plan draws on Kai Tahu (the region’s iwi) values to inform decisionmaking including whanaukataka (family and community focused), manaakitaka (hospitality) and kaitiakitaka (guardianship).

Launched in December, it was designed to be community-driver from the start, says LWT chief executive Tim Barke.

“Created with and for the local communities, the people of Queenstown Lakes have expressed their aspirations for what tourism can become,” Barke says.

“This collective vision provides opportunities for everyone in the region, as well as greater wellbeing for people and the planet.”

The first initiative, launching in early April, will be a funding platform which enables visitors and industry to support localised climate, conservation and biodiversity action.

The strategy is an output of the Grow Well | Whaiora Spatial Plan, a formal partnership between QLDC, Kai Tahu and the Crown and an action in the QLDC Climate and Biodiversity Plan.

Lewers adds: “The plan will continue to evolve and the partnership welcomes feedback from the community at any time for consideration at the next periodic review point.

“So, we urge everyone who lives here or has an interest in our region to stay informed and sign up to our newsletter.”

Hearts Moved For Turkey-Syria Earthquake Victims

Hearts are being moved around the country to support those left grieving, orphaned, without shelter in just the clothes on their backs, and in freezing temperatures after the devastating Turkey-Syria earthquakes this week.

Queenstown’s small tight-knit Turkish community is joining others in doing all it can, sending money to appeals to help the victims back in their home country.

Thankfully, family and friends of local Turkish Kebabs owner Osman Tekinkaya live in a different part of Turkey and are safe and well, even though the earthquakes were felt all over Turkey.

“We’re sending money overseas to support earthquake victims as a group. The Turkish Embassy in Wellington is also doing something,” says Osman. While some of Queenstown’s Turkish community has dispersed around the region there are still about 20 Turkish people living in Queenstown.

“It’s sad seeing all the buildings down and the people affected – heartbreaking,” says Adem Califak, of Wanaka’s Snack Shack Turkish Kebabs. Thankfully, his family and the families of his staff and friends are safe and they’re all sending money back home through their trusted Turkish, Auckland-based food supplier, who’s collecting money for earthquake victims.

Queenstown-based Orphans Aid International ceo and founder Sue van Schreven launched a massive Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal last week (February 8) through the charity’s supporters in NZ and Australia. In the first 24 hours over $20,000 had been raised and by Sunday evening more than $40,000 had come into the appeal, mostly from New Zealand.

The death toll after the two devastating 7.8 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes had surpassed 29,000 by Sunday night (NZ time), according to latest reports from Aljazeera.

Tens of thousands more have been reported to be injured and millions left homeless, or affected, throughout Turkey and Syria, with thousands of collapsed buildings and apartment blocks.

“There will be overwhelming need in the coming months,” says Sue, whose organisation cares for orphans, and runs homes and programmes to save children and families in vulnerable countries around the world.

“We’re in a good place to help with our strong networks and can reach out to people and organisations already on the ground with orphanages, the newly-orphaned, families and individuals in desperate need.”

“While other agencies specialise in that initial emergency response, rescuing any survivors from the rubble, our strength lies in resourcing the people doing the immediate care after that first emergency response,” says Sue. “We know which charities need to purchase milk formula, for example, or those who need a building for shelter. We hope that first wave of rescue aid comes in very quickly and we can support after that.” These earthquakes have obviously been absolutely devastating on a massive scale and it’s hard to comprehend the situation unless you’re there, she says. “Not only have buildings, towns and cities been wiped out, but it’s mid-winter and they have very severe winters there.”

It’s been heartening to see small children, a new-born baby and the odd other survivor pulled from the rubble, even days on, but Sue says the need for assistance is going to be huge.

“I’m expecting there will be an absolute flood of new children, orphans, or those separated from their parents, as well as adults and families needing homes,” she says. “I know we can get the funds to the right people quickly.” She’s hoping Orphans Aid can raise $100,000 in the next month when she and husband Carl are travelling to next-door Bulgaria for a meeting of other European aid agencies working with orphans. That meeting was already planned, but Sue’s expecting the Turkey-Syria earthquakes to be a major focus of that gathering now.

Jiang wins ultramarathon

Queenstown runner Nancy Jiang (NZL) won her maiden Tarawera Ultramarathon by UTMB title as she took the tape in one of the most competitive women’s 102km races the event has ever seen. Jiang, the 2021 New Zealand Mountain Running champion, eventually wore down her competitors over the last few kilometres to finish in 9:26:08, with just four minutes separating her and the second and third place finishers Stephanie Auston (AUS) and Aroa Sio (ESP). “I don’t know what just happened. I wasn’t expecting this at all, but I don’t know, I had a good feeling. It just feels like the days leading up to the race things were working out for me. I can’t explain it, but I had a feeling that I was going to have a good day and I just held on to that feeling. I don’t know, maybe it was just gut feel and believing in yourself.” Podium finishers qualify for the CCC (100km) race at UTMB Mont-Blanc in August, something Jiang say she’s delighted to have secured.

Have your say on BP roundabout

Plans for a new transport environment for Queenstown’s busiest intersection are open for submissions. The plans are part of the New Zealand Upgrade Programme which proposes making significant changes to the roading network in Frankton, the entrance to Queenstown, including replacing the State Highway 6/ 6A roundabout with a signalised intersection, adding bus lanes, expanding the existing bus hub and improving access for pedestrians and cyclists. The application can be viewed on QLDC’s website. Submissions can be made via email to rcsubmission@qldc.govt.nz until Thursday, 9 March, 2023.

Future of transport in Queenstown?

An electric driverless minibus transported passengers about 70 metres along Beach Street last Wednesday, from outside Absoloot Hostel QT, before turning around and coming back. The autonomous vehicle was brought to town by Ohmio Automotion Ltd. The Auckland-based company sponsored New Zealand’s first forum on Driverless Passenger Transport

hosted by ITSNZ in Queenstown. The forum featured some 30 experts exchanging knowledge on the role of autonomous transport solutions in solving ‘Public Transport’s First and Last Mile Challenge’. Ohmio’s vehicles have already been deployed in New Zealand, Australia, China, South Korea, and Luxembourg. They are designed at present to be used in airports, ports or commercial parks, hospitals, rest homes and retirement villages, schools, universities and education campuses, and recreation areas and amusement parks.

Sprinkler ban lifted

Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has lifted water restrictions across the district. The restrictions, which banned sprinklers anytime other than midnight to 6am and discouraged hand watering, had been in place since 9 January, for exactly one month. “QLDC would like to thank residents and visitors for their efforts in reducing water usage,” council spokesperson Sam White said. “However, with the weather remaining hot and dry it is still very important to conserve water where possible. There are many ways to do this, including using timers for sprinklers to ensure irrigation occurs between midnight and 6am when demand is low.” A full list of water conservation ideas can be found on the council’s website.

New brands at T Galleria by DFS

Two of the world’s most stylish fashion houses are now selling their products in Queenstown’s T Galleria by DFS, in the refurbished O’Connells complex. Italian ski, mountain and city wear brand Moncler and iconic British fashion house Burberry have transformed two prime storefront areas on either side of the store entranceway. Other new arrivals coming soon to the store include French jeweller and watchmaker extraordinaire Cartier. T Galleria by DFS, which opened three months ago, boasts over 120 international and premium local New Zealand brands across 1800sqm of O’Connells, including Chloé, Stella McCartney and Kenzo, beauty from Dior, Estée Lauder, Lancôme, Tom Ford, La Prairie, Clarins and Gucci, as well as a range of watches, wine, food and gifts.

Marathon event climbs to new heights

The gut-busting Shotover Moonlight Mountain Marathon returns for the 11th edition this weekend, with some new challenges for runners. Organised by the Foster family from Ben Lomond Station, the event welcomes athletes from across New Zealand, Australia and the world onto the working merino station to experience the spectacular high country landscapes.

It has gained a strong following due to the diverse terrain, technical trails and ‘once a year’ opportunity to follow abandoned 1880s gold mining water races, sheep tracks on razorback ridges, climbing up stunning waterfalls on ladders and passing through an abandoned gold mining tunnel.

And for the 2023 event, the Fosters have added the inaugural Ben Lomond Vertical Kilometre.

The up-hill only race will see runners climb 1200 vertical meters over just 3.9km, from the station woolshed at Moke Lake, to the summit of Ben Lomond.

The Vertical Kilometre and Mountain Marathon courses have received certification from the International Skyrunning Association and these events will be the 2023 New Zealand championships in those distances.

A strong field of entrants has entered the various events, with 11 countries represented and a selection of top New Zealand and international runners competing.

The 2020 Mountain Marathon champion Scotty Hawker is returning this time taking on the Vertical Kilometre and 21km events, while New Zealand Mountain Running legend Anna Frost is also lining up in the Vertical Kilometre.

US athlete Kyle Curtin from team Tailwind Nutrition is lining up in the Vertical Kilometre and Mountain Marathon - new distances for Kyle who normally sets records in ultra long distance events and trails.

Curtin was a top ten finisher in the famous Western States Endurance Run in (2021) and holds the fastest known times for the Tahoe Rim trail. Kyle will be joined by compatriot Sarah Ostaszewski who is competing in the Womens Mountain Marathon.

“We are excited to be back running the event as intended after the last few years of disruptions, while it’s still challenging to pull things together,” event co-director Antz Longman says.

“The response we’ve received from new and returning athletes is awesome.” The challenge of putting on events like this is not lost on the Fosters.

“It’s a big effort for us as a family to coordinate the marshals, course logistics and trail maintenance to deliver an event across such varied terrain,” event co-director Hamish Foster says.

“We’re fortunate to have had fantastic ongoing support from a range of local individuals and businesses without which the event wouldn’t be possible.”

The races run this Friday and Saturday, 17 and 18 February.

The recruitment effort is ongoing and all prospective lifeguards should head to https://qldc.qjumpersjobs.co/ to find more information and details of how to apply.

Tewa Banks vaults final hurdle

A major new affordable housing development in Queenstown Lakes is a step closer after rules were changed around the land it will be built on.

Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust (QLCHT) wants to build 68 houses on the 3.68-hectare site off Jopp Street, Arrowtown.

Houses will be sold for between $350,000 and $400,000, in a town where the median price is over $1.7 million, while others will be made available for long-term rentals and senior housing.

But the trust was hamstrung over finance for the $50 million project.

The former council land was sold to the trust for $1 in 2019, having been previously used as effluent treatment ponds. That meant the land was designated for public utility, preventing its use as financial security.

QLCHT has applied to Te Tuapapa Kura Kainga – Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for an interest free loan under the Progressive Home Ownership fund to progress the development, subject to the land being available as security.

It also has finance lined up from ASB Bank.

At Thursday’s full council meeting, councillors voted to remove the designation and replace it with a registered covenant requiring the land to only ever be used for the purpose of providing affordable housing.

Queenstown Lakes District Mayor Glyn Lewers says: “With a welldocumented shortage of affordable housing in our district, we as a council felt strongly about removing this barrier for QLCHT so that development for much needed housing can continue at pace.”

The covenant includes first right of refusal for council to buy back the land if sold, plus a right for council to buy back the land if the covenant is breached. Lewers says the council is comfortable with the level of risk associated with redesignating the land.

QLCHT Chief Executive Julie Scott said she is delighted with Council’s decision.

“Having broken ground on the development site at Jopp Street last September, we are very pleased the project can continue as originally planned this year. With earthworks nearly complete, we’re now in a position to appoint a civil works contractor, confirm finance and continue with construction of these 68 homes.”

There are 870 households on the trust’s waiting list.

The Tewa Banks development is one of a range of initiatives council is working on in its focus on ensuring affordable housing in the district, including formalising inclusionary housing measures.

My Life Story

ERNA SPIJKERBOSCH HONOURING ERNA - ONE STEP AHEAD OF THE GAME

She’s led a significant sector of New Zealand’s tourism industry, green tourism initiatives, and helped lead one of the country’s fastest growing districts, all without even passing School Certificate.

That was never a problem. If Erna Spijkerbosch didn’t know how to do something she found someone to teach her and learned.

Now after 35 years running Queenstown Holiday Park Creeksyde, Erna’s one of Queenstown’s entrepreneurial tourism legends, along with her DIY husband of 52 years, Tonnie Spijkerbosch. Creeksyde, which opened in 1988, was believed to be the first dedicated campervan park in the country.

Born with her chicken farmer father’s entrepreneurial spirit in 1948, Erna spent most of her childhood near Oamaru.

A shy teenager, she “absconded” from Waitaki Girls’ High. “I didn’t get aggressive until I got to Queenstown,” she grins.

She had various stints as a nurse aid in Otago, before leaving her 95cents an hour job to earn $1.05 packing biscuits at Dunedin’s Cadburys Factory.

“I saved and bought a two-door, sporty Triumph Herald.”

On a rainy Dunedin night at a Town Hall dance Erna met fresh Dutch immigrant Tonnie. “My friend said, ‘What’s he like, and I said, ‘Damned if I know. I can’t understand a word he’s saying’.”

After marrying in 1970 they moved to Queenstown where Tonnie’s plumbing skills were in demand with Hec Boyd’s Queenstown Plumbing.

Erna worked at Mountain View Motels, housekeeping, and as cook for Otago Bitumen, turning out a leg of lamb or roast pork lunch on her Henry Street coal range for 10 workers. Rent was $8 a week and they took in a tenant to help.

After 11 months in Holland, they returned to launch Spikes Plumbing in Queenstown.

“I used to drive down the Mall, double park, go into the Four Square and get the groceries, talk to Hannah Green, come out, and there was still nobody waiting to get past me,” says Erna.

She taught herself bookkeeping, managing Tony’s accounts by attending night classes on computer systems. “My parents gave us $10,000 to buy our first computer – a NCR Decision Mate with Twin Floppy Disc.”

Erna took on her first battle with Plumbing Wholesale suppliers, fighting furiously to get freight free goods to Queenstown, scoring Tonnie a wholesale licence.

As their three kids grew, Erna took an interest in local politics, sitting in the public gallery at Queenstown Borough Council meetings, alongside legendary environmental advocate Margaret Templeton. After meetings, when “their flagons of gin and whiskey” came out, she’d tell the councillors what they were doing wrong.

Erna served on Wakatipu High School’s Board of Trustees and was a founding member of the Queenstown Chamber of Commerce, before taking on local politics herself. She was a Queenstown Lakes District councillor for six years from 1995, through Queenstown’s devastating record 1999 floods.

She and Tonnie sold their plumbing business in 1989 and bought land in Robins Road where they opened Creeksyde in 1988 with just 36 campervan sites. Gradually, Tonnie bought neighbouring properties, incorporating land into the holiday park, creating a green oasis. Today the park has 80 sites and 18 units.

“We’d drop ‘10 percent off’ brochures onto campervan windscreens downtown and offer the leftover cream buns from Queenstown Bakery to our guests in the kitchen each night,” says Erna. “We’d give them a leaflet to give away out of town, offering the same to any other campervans they met.”

Always ahead of the game, Erna launched national co-operative marketing body, Kiwi Camps, serving as national secretary.

Elected to the Holiday Accommodation Parks of NZ Board, she served 13 years, including as vice and national president.

An innovator, Erna noticed how the Europeans handled rubbish and recycling. She discovered Green Globe 21 sustainability certification, did the hard yards and before long was guest speaker at the first Green Globe Conference in Kaikoura, travelling to Jamaica to speak too. By Creeksyde’s 30th birthday it had earned ‘Masters’ status.

It’s had its challenges. A Japanese guest once unwittingly emptied his Portaloo using the centralised vacuum system. “We fed paper towels on a string through the suction line until the pipes were cleaned out.” Then an American tourist threatened to sue them when staff rushed to put out a fire he’d innocently lit in an old coal range converted to gas, in a park barbecue area. “We’d used a coal range for aesthetics, but he’d bought a bag of kindling and started a fire to cook his dinner,” smiles Erna. “He’d looked up on his phone how to cook in a coal range.”

Staff accommodation is still the biggest problem they’ve ever faced. “We now own flats around Boydtown.”

Winner of a Tourism Award in 1989, an AA Spirit of Hospitality Award in 2003, and numerous other hospitality, holiday park and tourism awards, Erna’s represented NZ around the world. A NZ Holiday Park Association life member, she’s been honoured for her outstanding contribution to the industry.

The Wizard of Christchurch (centre) was on hand with his wand to help Erna (right) and Tonnie celebrate Creeksyde’s 30th birthday. Erna, during her time on the Holiday Accommodation Parks of NZ Board

Wanted Italian mafia fugitive found living as a pizza chef in France

Convicted murderer Edgardo Greco, 63, was arrested after being on the run for more than 16 years. Greco was sentenced to life in prison in absentia for the 1991 murders of two brothers, who were beaten to death at a fish shop in Calabria, Italy. Greco, believed to belong to one of Italy’s most powerful mafia organisations was discovered working as a pizza chef in Saint Etienne in southern France.

New French law will blanket parking lots with solar panels

French parking lots could soon generate as much electricity as 10 nuclear power plants, after a law wins final passage requiring canopies of solar panels to be built atop all substantial lots in the country. The plan makes France a world leader in efforts to cover as many surfaces as possible with solar panels and could add as much as 8 percent to France’s current electrical capacity.

The cost of solar panels continues to drop, but one challenge of increasing solar power coverage in a densely populated country like France is finding ways that don’t compete for land use, said Arnaud Schwartz, the president of France Nature Environment. Taking away agricultural land or open fields and giving it over to solar farms is unattractive, but covering parking lots “harms biodiversity a lot less,” he said.

US Military Expansion

The United States announced an expansion of four additional military bases in the Philippines strengthening US alliances in the region as tensions with China over Taiwan and the South China Sea continue. The agreement allocates $82M to upgrade the five existing military sites, which supports combined military training and exercises. Beijing has increasingly claimed strategic areas of the South China Sea, including areas Manila claims as its own.

In September, she added a note to the sign beneath the hair and beard cut prices. It said: “If this creates a hardship for you, please let me know. Nobody will be turned away for lack of ability to pay.”

Shop owner Lynn Cressey’s customers, many of whom are retired or military, come from various situations: they may be on fixed incomes, out of work, disabled or simply going through a rough patch.

$40 million+ for land neighbouring Jack’s Point

A prime piece of Queenstown land coveted by international luxury resort brands is now on the open market for the first time.

The 24-hecatre site on Lodge Road, above Jack’s Point, includes four hectares which have been zoned for comprehensive development.

It is expected to sell for more than $40 million.

New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty sales associate Matt Finnigan says the property is the only remaining luxury development site in Queenstown with such large-scale space, privacy and extensive lake views.

“This is a property that has long been in the sights of ultra-luxe global resort brands – it is one of the most superior sites in Queenstown for a high-end resort development,” he says.

“As well as 20 hectares of elevated, pristine land and remote wilderness, the additional, commercially developable area of the property is larger than the central Queenstown CBD.

“With no minimum lot size or site coverage restrictions, absolute privacy and powerful lake and mountain views, this property has all the hallmarks of a world-class lodge or multi-use development site, as well as top-end residential opportunities.”

Creative Communities Scheme February 23 Funding Round Open

Funding is now available for community–based arts groups for performances, events and workshops that will provide a variety of opportunities for participation in those activities.

The aim of the Scheme is to increase participation in the arts at a local level, and increase the range and diversity of arts available to communities.

A funding guide is available online to assist with the application process. The guidelines and application form is available on the Council website: www.qldc.govt.nz/services/funding/arts

Funding round is now open and will close on Tuesday 28th February 2023. For any enquiries contact

The Special Purpose zoning supports commercial activity such as visitor accommodation, conference and meeting facilities, restaurants and day spas.

Queenstown resource management planner Scott Freeman of Southern Planning says it’s rare to find a true north-facing lakeview development site in the resort.

“The Lodge Road site is very unique within Queenstown as it occupies an elevated, standalone parcel on the headland within Jack’s Point and has outstanding views of mountains and Lake Wakatipu,”” Freeman says. “This elevated position is coupled with the fact that the zoning afforded to the site provides significant future development opportunities.”

A Golf Deed exists between the site the owner of the neighbouring Jack’s Point Golf Course to negotiate specific golf-playing rights for the owner, operator and guests or residents of the site. Tenders close at noon on Tuesday, 28 March, 2023.

READER FEEDBACK

PARKING

In his reply to Bob Bobben in this week’s LWB, QLDC Parking states that loading bays can be used by car drivers for a few minutes for drop people off and pick-up and SHOPPING for a few minutes??

This is simply NOT TRUE.

The first ticket I got from them was for stopping in a loading bay for less than TWENTY SECONDS while being the responsible driver for a couple of friends. They were waiting for me, and I didn’t even switch off the motor, but no quarter was given by QLDC and I had to pay $45. I had absolutely no idea what I had done wrong, I had to call them to find out

- I can’t tell you how impressed I was to find that my rates money is being used to pay somebody to view camera footage to entrap people like this!

The next time it happened, I didn’t have - and still don’t have - any idea what I did wrong or where, but I didn’t even bother to argue.

I’d like to hear from QLDC exactly which of these camera’d spaces we are actually allowed to use please and for exactly how long?

Thank you!

Joan

How to avoid Cryptocurrency scams

Bitcoin has proven itself as a long term store of value and digital means of payment. Attempting to usurp Bitcoin, other Cryptocurrencies sell themselves as having more features or better performance.

As such Cryptocurrencies have become a popular investment option in recent years, with more people looking for better returns on their money. However, the digital nature of cryptocurrencies makes them a prime target for scammers, who are always looking for new ways to trick people into giving away their money.

Here are some tips to help you avoid cryptocurrency scams:

1. Check the credibility of exchanges or brokers: When buying or trading Bitcoin, it’s important to use a reputable exchange. Make sure to research the exchange to ensure it has been around for a long time, and look for any negative reviews or security breaches.

2. Do not leave your Bitcoins on an exchange any longer than absolutely necessary. Treat exchanges like public toilets, go in, do your business, and get out as quickly as possible. Withdraw your bitcoins to your own personal wallet, ideally a hardware wallet as soon as possible.

3. Store your Bitcoins in a hardware wallet and keep your secret key backup safe. Your secret key provides full access to your Bitcoins. Do not store your private keys on your computer or on any device that’s connected to the internet, and ensure no one else can get to them. Never show your secret key to anyone ever under any circumstances.

4. Ignore messages such as “if you send us 1 coin we will send you 2 back”. Or giveaways even if they look to have come from authentic sources. Often the scammers will pose as celebrities or famous people to give their scam creedence. Ignore unsolicited emails that appear to come from any exchange with a link to log in as these will often be attempts to steal your password.

5. Get advice from experts: If you are not certain about a particular investment opportunity, seek advice from a trusted financial advisor or a trusted cryptocurrency expert. They can help you determine whether an investment or cryptocurrency is legitimate or not.

In conclusion, cryptocurrency scams are becoming increasingly common, but with a bit of caution and knowledge, you can avoid falling victim to them.

Imitation is not always the sincerest form of flattery

Now that the tourists have returned to Queenstown many locals and visitors have experienced anything but a kiwi welcome when they take a cab. Queenstown being busy again has brought the unwelcome return of operators and individuals who are moonlighting as reputable taxi companies or drivers.

One has decided to even imitate our name to pass themselves off as our company. It isn’t sincere and we aren’t flattered. Many of these imitators deliver unfair fares and less than stellar service that inevitably rubs off

Queenstown Taxis has been Queenstown’s ‘local’ taxi company for over 60 years. The company is locally owned and our drivers are also mostly locals and all uphold the

highest levels of service. We also have the largest fleet of taxi’s on the road 24/7.

When taking a taxi choose one that you can trust and if you do have a problem you can get a local person on the phone who will deal with any complaints professionally. We’re proud to be a part of the Queenstown transport landscape, offering a clean and safe service to both locals and tourists alike.

If you require a tour of the town or a wine tasting adventure, have a flight to catch or a conference to attend, Queenstown Taxis have got you covered, with affordable group transfers for up to 11 passengers and even a mobility taxi for those in need.

And in the unlikely event that we’re all booked up, give Green Cabs, Corporate Cabs, or Arrowtown Taxis a try as they too are reputable operators.

You can TRUST Blue Bubble Queenstown Taxis!

Queenstown Volunteer Fire Brigade History

Celebrating Frontline Heroes Of A Bygone Era

In the second part of our series, we track the remaining years of the Queenstown Volunteer Fire Brigade’s rich history.

By 1974 it was time for Queenstown’s ever-expanding band of firefighting heroes to move from the Queenstown Fire Brigade’s small Brecon Street station to larger, new premises in Isle Street.

The Prime Minister, The Right Honourable Norman Kirk, was set to arrive for the official opening and unveil a commemorative plaque already bearing his name on April 6, 1974. However, brigade secretary Katherine Lamont says fire brigade records, show the PM had to pull out at the last minute with Transport Minister Sir Basil Arthur standing in for him on the day.

By the time the new Isle Street Station opened the brigade sported some 25 eager volunteer firefighters. An extra truck was added to line the shiny new three-bay station, which is still on the same site today having undergone a number of major expansions and renovations. Queenstown still has three fire engines, with another at Frankton Fire Station, a support vehicle based at Shotover Country, and two fire trucks and a water tanker based at Arrowtown.

With a new fire station now built it was time to ensure the town’s rickety old siren, that had replaced the original hand bell in the early 1950s, was upgraded. The second siren had been placed on top of a shaky old post with numerous complaints to the brigade about it as if it was kicked hard enough it would go off. Amusingly, current Queenstown Fire Chief Terry O’Connell himself remembers well kicking the old post on the corner of Melbourne Street and Frankton Road on his way home from school and setting off the alarm, says Katherine. A post siren also operated from Brecon Street until the new alarm was installed at the new Isle Street Station. The brigade soon outgrew its new station with only a very small lounge and several volunteers, including Johnny Mills, living on site. A major extension in 1999 saw another floor added upstairs featuring a new social and training room, and large deck off one side. By 2006 five bedrooms had been added for volunteers to stay overnight and man the first truck and manage

recommissioning of trucks returning from a call-out, says Katherine. Crews responded to some serious major fires locally, including the massive fire at Closeburn, started by fireworks in November, 2005. More than 100 people were evacuated from the Closeburn, Wilson’s Bay and Alpine Retreat areas after the alarm was raised at 10pm. Legendary Te Anau helicopter pilot ‘Hannibal’ (Richard) Hayes was on the scene quickly fighting the blaze using newly-acquired night vision flying goggles – the first in the region. “He was the hero of the night and fought the fire from the air using monsoon buckets, despite gale force winds,” says Katherine. “The fire got very close to one of the houses and more helicopters arrived the next morning to help fight the fire, along with ground crews. Rain fell by midday, greatly assisting the battle, but it was tricky terrain, she says.

Queenstown’s Night ‘n Day Dairy building on the Rees Street, Beach Street corner, pretty much burnt down in January 14, 2007, and was fought gallantly by the Queenstown and Frankton brigades. The dairy was absolutely gutted with major smoke damage to the next-door Opal Centre and upstairs premises of both businesses. That blaze was caused by an electrical fault and both buildings were demolished.

World Bar’s devastating Shotover Street fire on May 24, 2013, also left little of that building which had to be demolished after fire broke out in Fat Badgers Pizzeria kitchen below. “Queenstown, Frankton, Arrowtown, and a command unit from Alexandra, all battled that blaze, with an Invercargill crew also on the way responding with an aerial ladder, says Katherine. Thankfully, these days not only are brigades better equipped but buildings are better protected with compulsory sprinkler systems, fire and smoke alarms.

Scott Cook to perform at Sherwood

Canadian folksinger Scott Cook is coming to Queenstown this weekend. Touring in support of his latest album Tangle of Souls, the artist who hails from Alberta will bring his positive vibes and feel-good tunes to the stage of the Sherwood on Saturday.

Scott toured New Zealand for the first time in early 2020 where he played a number of shows including Whare Flat and Auckland Folk Festivals. It was after this that he headed back home and was grateful to have some unexpected time to finish his cloth-bound, 240page hardcover book, which accompanies the latest album. Tangle of Souls spent two weeks at #1 on one of Alberta’s radio networks and earnt him his third Canadian Folk Music Award nomination.

The album itself was recorded in Australia in 2019 with a mostly-local band. The album cover and the art featured throughout the book depicts some beautiful flora artwork created by Cecilia Sharpley. This will be his first time in Tahuna – he’s performing solo and really looking forward to it.

“It’s storytelling, folk and roots. Most are stories from my life ––sometimes I tell other people’s stories as well. Hopefully there are songs that everyone can relate to, and hopefully send folks home feeling hopeful about the world, which is not always the effect that scrolling the internet or watching TV have on me.

“It’s my first time in Queenstown – I have no idea who will come but I hope to meet friendly people. It’ll be an evening of songs and stories, and as I said, I hope it will give people something to go away with –feeling hopeful about life and the world,” says Scott.

Scott lived in Taiwan for six years and quit his job as a kindergarten teacher to pursue his passion. The book is the biggest thing he’s ever done and includes a lot of himself “It’s half personal and half political,” says Scott. The book and the album go hand-in-hand, and focus on the comparisons he has drawn between his personal life-changing crisis and societal issues.

“Some of it is road stories and some of it is about how I almost killed myself partying too hard, and some of the parallels I could see with that – just our broader problem as a species that we seem unable to change. Even though all the experts tell us that the way we’re living is going to lead to our extinction, we really seem to have a hard time doing anything to change that. I noticed the similarities with my own addictive tendencies and so drew out some of those similarities,” says Scott.

Scott Cook will perform at the Sherwood this Saturday 18 February with doors opening at 6:30pm. You can get tickets at the Sherwood’s website or at www.undertheradar.co.nz/tour/18972/Scott-CookCAN-NZ-Tour.utr and can listen to Scott’s music and find out more about him at www.scottcook.net

Remarkable Theatre’s annual promenade theatre in the beautiful backdrop of Queenstown Gardens will return from 17 February. Their Space Oddities show will include audience and cast roaming around the pond moving from one open-air stage to another to enjoy several space-themed performances over a couple of hours.

Sketches from fan-favourite space related shows and movies from all across the universe will be brought to life – think the likes of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Star Trek, Doctor Who, and Star Wars. The Garden Show is one of the theatre group’s annual events and takes place around the same time every year. Auditions were held back in November and the group have been working hard to perfect their roles and pull everything together.

Kate Robinson is in charge of costume design and construction for the performance and runs sewing and alterations business Stitch N Time in town. She originally went to volunteer her skills in sewing, arts and crafts, and was looking forward to helping with the costumes as she loves getting creative, but was surprised and excited to also be cast in three small roles.

“I’ve been helping out for a few months now. There’s lots of sewing involved – I’ve made a Miss Piggy costume, I’ve got a few masks to make including one for a character called Kryten, who was out of Red Dwarf, then there are the baddies out of Doctor Who, which are called Sycorax. There’s also a Darth Vader character, and the main ones I’ve made – I spent a whole weekend doing papier mache over three Swiss balls to make giant planets to fit on people. When you see them on the day you’re going to laugh, they’re brilliant,” says Kate.

The show will include eight smaller plays and sketches to form the entire experience. It will start at the bandstand where there will be a couple of performances before moving along. Each year has a different theme and this year they’ve settled out of space – some of the shows are funny, and some a little more serious. One of the movies they’ll be covering is Apollo 13.

“We’re doing the scene in the movie where the spaceship has a malfunction and everything starts going off like a frog in a sock – all the alarms are going off, and it’s quite a tricky one as we’re all in the same scene but the scene is set in two very different environments. One being the group of astronauts in a spaceship and the other being the group of people down on the ground at Mission Control. It’s quite an intense scene in the movie – it’s the scene where everything goes wrong and it was good fun trying it all out,” says Kate.

Remarkable Theatre’s Space Oddities promenade theatre in Queenstown Gardens will include several performances starting from 6pm on Friday 17 and running through to 6pm on Sunday 19 February. Koha entry starts at $5 per person.

More information about the show times and Remarkable Theatre can be found at remarkabletheatre.org.nz
