Cultivating our collective Kia ora, this is week one of my new role at the Queenstown Business Chamber of Commerce. The task ahead is to drive business growth by building capability, innovation and collaboration. I’m here to help identify and dismantle common barriers that get in the way of our businesses maximising their potential. ‘Economic gardening’ is a term I learnt in my previous advisory role in the Economic Development Unit at QLDC. It essentially means to build a thriving and resilient economy by supporting and growing businesses we have now. I’m ready to get my hands dirty. We’re a town of mostly small businesses. Businesses that are currently very busy managing a myriad of challenges, everything from the all-consuming staff conundrum, immigration, complex employment law and a lack of housing for staff (if you can find them). These puzzles make the road cone issue small potatoes – we know there’s an end in sight for that. All these issues our businesses have in common. But we also have in common the fact that despite hurdles for those who choose to live here (yep – we know it’s expensive), we all had the faith that we have the mental toughness, innovative ideas, resilience and connections to make it in one of the greatest places in the world.
So how do we keep pushing forward? My personal opinion is we’re not going to get anywhere (fast) by complaining. While the current business environment challenges aren’t unique to Queenstown, what is solely ours is our passion, drive and love for this place. We’ve got where we are via a long line of battlers – the miners, the ski field operators (with nothing but a few ropes) and the tourism operators who innovated to offer new adventures to new markets all from the bottom of the planet. We can work together to proactively find solutions and come back better than before. And we can do it while looking after our best assets – our people and environment. Because that is good for business.
How can I help? If you’re not already a member, join the Chamber. If you think the Chamber is ‘not for you’ think again. Get involved! I can guarantee there is a talented team working on behalf of YOU! When labour’s tight, we could all do with an advocate and extension of our team right? Get in the arena, connect with other businesses that (I can also guarantee) are facing most of the same challenges you are. Take advantage of the professional development and training we offer – use it to motivate and retain your precious people. Let’s work together to find solutions – because with so many talented leaders and passionate business owners that love this town – our key strength is our united front.
Get in touch, I’m keen to hear your ideas. Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini Our strength is not as individuals, but as a collective Sharon Fifield (your committed gardener)

YOUR FEEDBACK IS IMPORTANT TO US
Kia Ora,
The team at the Queenstown Media Group, are currently asking for your feedback which will help guide our decision making for the Lakes Weekly and the Queenstown App for 2023. The information you provide is critical in what we deliver across both publications.
Ultimately if you love reading the Lakes Weekly, QT Business and what we produce on the QTN App, we would love you feedback to ensure what we produce remains what you want to read. That in turn helps with attracting local advertising which enables us to deliver the Lakes Weekly and the App to Queenstown as free publications.
As a result of your feedback last year we increased our local news content, engaged more local writers to produce My Life’s Story and regular community articles about locals and local events and recently introduced Goings On About Town. We also got feedback on the way the publication is designed and as a result the classified sections are grouped together under headings to make it an easier read, we included a Contents Table at the front to help navigating through the issue. We’re almost a full colour publication as a result of your feedback and the QT App has increased its local news while adding business news and a community events section.
The feedback survey is live now and open until the 20th of November. As a sweetener we have 2 x $100 vouchers at either White and Wong’s or Botswana Butchery to be won.
We’d love to have your honest feedback, the good, the bad and your ideas. Please give us 5 minutes of your time to fill in the survey and of course there is always the chance to win that dinner at Botswana Butchery or White and Wong’s.
You can connect to the survey, through the QR code below or there are direct links on the QT App, our website or Facebook page.
Lastly, thank you again for your support, especially over the last couple of years. The encouragement and feedback from the community has been the best medicine and motivation to keep trying new things while retaining the best bits.

Stepping down from a job well done
by Sue Fea
He’s been the face of Wakatipu High School for 10 years now, through some of the school’s most challenging times, but it’s time for principal, Steve Hall to head off on his bike for some R & R. Steve’s brought a wealth of outdoor adventure, education and business experience to the role, but he reckons it’s a good time for him to bow out, and for a leadership transition. “Ten years feels like a good stint in a job like this and I feel like I’m leaving the school in good shape,” says Steve, 58. “I’m going to have a break first and foremost and think hard about what to do next.” Much of that thinking will take place on the long arduous 3000km Tour Aotearoa cycling trail that he’s got planned from Cape Reinga to Bluff, hopefully in March, next year. By then his replacement, long-time Wakatipu High School teacher and associate principal Oded Nathan, will be firmly entrenched in his new role, taking over as principal from Steve. “I handed in my notice in February and the board appointed Oded at the end of term two. He’s been here a long time so he knows the school intimately,” says Steve. Oded joined Wakatipu High School as associate head of maths in 2010, becoming Steve’s deputy in 2013.
Steve hails from an impressive professional background, which includes five years as a young English, Economics, Outdoor Education teacher and Dean at Wakatipu High School during the 1990s. Even then he brought a strong outdoors aspect to the role having previously worked locally in the ski industry as an instructor, heli-ski guide and also as a commercial rafting guide.
After leaving Wakatipu High School the first time Steve went on to become school director at Outward Bound in the Marlborough Sounds for five and a half years. He then became chief executive of the Halberg Trust. All of his teaching and school principal’s career have been at Wakatipu High School.
“I’m not retiring, or leaving Queenstown. All I’m worried about right now is heading off on my bike,” he smiles.
The Hall’s youngest, Stefan, is just finishing Year 12, while their eldest is a lawyer in Queenstown, and the other serving in the NZ Army.
The most challenging aspects of his local principal’s role have been the initial transition from statutory management to his leadership when he started the job, relocating the entire school to Frankton and continuing roll growth. “We’ve just had our Orientation Day for 2023 and we expect 300 Year 9 students – our biggest number ever, to start at the beginning of next year,” says Steve. The year will open with a roll of some 1300 students. “That’s pretty much double what it was when I arrived.”
Phase Two of the new school’s expansion has been in full swing too, which has been very challenging to work through, he says.
“We’ve had areas of the school closed and been operating from temporary classrooms,” says Steve. “We’re always dealing with growth.” “At one stage, right in the real peak of the Phase Two expansions about a year ago, we had to rent a room at the Wyndham Hotel across the road and use it for classroom space.”
He says it’s been quite a transition even just relocating the school into the modern-style learning environment campus. Thrown into the mix these past two and a half years have been the challenges of Covid, the pressures that’s placed on local families and the move to online learning, all requiring extra support for students and staff.
“Covid was really challenging for all of the community, the education sector, school staff, students and families. It’s something none of us will ever forget,” says Steve. “We knew how much the community was struggling and we had
a part to play to keep things normal for kids, offering support, but keeping teaching and learning going.”
Despite all this he’s pretty chuffed that during parts of last year in a couple of qualifications students achieved the highest passes ever. “Our predictions are for some really strong achievements when these current NCEA results come through in January.”
Steve says the school’s main aim has been for students to leave the school with the best possible qualifications, ready for successful futures, well versed in plenty of extra-curricular activities like sport, arts, culture, community and leadership. “That’s the all-round education our community wants,” he says. Also pleasing has been the number of parents keeping their children in the basin for their high school years and not sending them away to boarding schools. “We’re looking at the highest retention of students locally for next year that we’ve ever had. There’s been a noticeable change in that,” says Steve.
There will be one last ‘Hoorah’ at the school’s legendary backcountry Branches Camp, which Steve’s enjoyed since his 1990s days at the school. “I will definitely be going to Branches this year for four or five days on the first camp (starts November 29) and several days on the second,” he says.

WORDS FROM around theworld
By Sue Fea
It’s hoped the Wakatipu’s wonderfully diverse global community can be celebrated in the Frankton Library garden with the launch of the first World Languages Lilliput Libraries there early next year.
Fifteen local artists from around the globe pitched in their creative talents during a weekend workshop on November 5 and 6 to paint and finish six wonderful Lilliput Libraries. They were built by volunteers from both the Arrowtown MenzSheds. Mitre 10 MEGA Queenstown made a huge donation of materials and staff time lead by the amazing Toni Boatright, with all of the paint donated by Resene in what library team leader Jess Payne says has been an incredible community effort by so many volunteers.
The project started more than a year ago and Jess says the end result has been “beautiful - beyond my wildest imaginings”. “It’s been a collaborative, co-designed project in which the community told us what they wanted and we, at the library, were just the facilitators,” she says. “There were so many people involved in this and there’s been some real magic come out of it.”
An official ribbon-cutting and launch of the World Language Lilliput Libraries will be held at either the end of February or early March and Jess says they’re keen to hear from migrant communities locally about how they’d like to represent their culture at the launch.
The library team is busy purchasing books in different languages after collecting data and feedback from a survey of migrant communities as to what they’d like.
“We still really want to talk to people involved in the community from different cultures about what they’d like to see featured and those who’d like to be part of the launch event,” she says.
“We’d love some cultural performances, and we’re on the hunt for some bi-lingual storytellers - people to read children’s stories in their own language.” Jess wants to hear from these people and also people who can read poetry in their native languages.
A major focus of the launch event will be a World Language Book Swap in which people can bring a book from their language, all to be spread on tables outside, and swap it for a book in another language.
“We want it to be a real celebration of the diversity of our community, possibly including games for the children and other activities – a real festival atmosphere,” says Jess.
“There’s such a huge demand for this locally but our library at Frankton just isn’t big enough to cater for the community’s diverse multicultural population so this project was our creative start to the solution.”
The six new World Language Lilliput Libraries will each represent a different continent, or group of countries, with books in those multiple languages from Europe, Africa and the Middle East, Central Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and Asia. It’s hoped the six colourfully-decorated Lilliput Libraries lined up in the garden will hold between 50 and 100 books in these different languages at any one time, with a stock of about 200 in total.
“Our incredible volunteer artists from the migrant community – some professional painters, some creatives, others people with artistic flair, only had three weeks to meet and brainstorm ideas and what they’ve come up with is just amazing,” says Jess. These volunteers came from Poland, Chile, Uruguay, Indonesia, Argentina, France, Japan, Malaysia, China, India and South Africa.
The libraries have now been stored safely until the launch. “We’ve been inundated with offers of books in other languages and that’s wonderful, but we’re asking that people please hang onto those until we’re open and have somewhere to store them.”
Jess says the Japanese Family Society of Queenstown was the original inspiration for the project. “They once had a library of 5000 items in the old Queenstown Camping Ground, but had to close because of redevelopment there.”
She’d also like to especially thank Natasya Zambri from the Frankton Library team, who she says is “the organisational mastermind behind this entire project”.
“Queenstown Library already has a fantastic World Language Section and this means we, at Frankton, can also cater for these bi-lingual readers in our community who deserve to have access to books in their own languages,” she says. “There are so many people living here who come from other countries, many of them raising children here, and we want them to be able to pass on their own culture and language to their children. This will make a big difference for these people.”
A much larger World Language Collection will also be available in the 15 libraries across the Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago districts, for those tapping into their library membership.

The trust has appointed Trish Daley into a newly-created Development Design Manager role. They have also confirmed local construction company Breenhomes as the development’s proposed main contractor. Ground was broken on the 68-lot development in Arrowtown in September of this year. Tewa Banks will consist of high-quality and energy-efficient affordable homes, with construction set to be complete in 2025. The allocation process for the homes is anticipated to start mid-2023 and construction is set to start at this time. The development will include at least six units specifically allocated for senior housing as well as approximately 45 homes that are expected to be sold into the Trust’s award-winning Secure Home programme.
“Trish has a strong focus on good master planning, design and development and will oversee all QLCHT development projects. Trish will also work closely with Tewa Banks lead project manager Tim Henry, who has recently opened the Queenstown office of project management firm Devcorp,” says Julie Scott, QLCHT Executive Officer.
Breen Constructions Managing Director Lindsay Breen says Tewa Banks will be a multi-staged development and the company intends to resource the project with local tradespeople.
“Breenhomes has a vision to transform the lives of people through building their future. It is a vision that has been passed down, in different iterations, for more than four generations, and has informed our desire to be a part of this, along with many other QLCHT projects,” he says. “Whilst we have our own committed workforce at Breen Constructions, we will also be looking to resource Tewa Banks with local sub-trades and contractors,” he says.

Meta (Facebook) Layoffs
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the tech company is cutting 11,000 jobs last week, a 13% cut amid a broader digital advertising downturn and skepticism of the company’s bet on the metaverse. Meta also announced it is extending a hiring freeze through the first quarter of 2023.
The major layoffs are the company’s first after 18 years of growth ended this summer with its first quarterly decline in revenue. The social media giant’s market capitalization peaked last year at $US1T but has since lost almost 80% of its value as the pandemic-induced tech boom fizzled and video-centric competitor TikTok makes inroads into the market.
Meta is not alone in cutting jobs of late; other tech companies include Lyft, payment processor Stripe, and Twitter, whose workforce was halved last week. Shares of Meta jumped as high as 8% on the layoff news.

QLDC Sport and Recreation Manager Simon Battrick said it was great to see grassroots cricket growing locally as well as the return of international matches to the district.
“We’re also thrilled to see international and domestic fixtures return to Sir John Davies Oval. We hosted some games last season that had to be played behind closed doors given COVID restrictions so it’s going to be great to see crowds return to the oval to watch the New Zealand and Otago teams in action and maybe inspire some future local legends,” he said.
Additionally Wānaka’s new cricket nets are now open for locals to enjoy. The four-bay nets at Wānaka Recreation Centre are a partnership between Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) and the Luggate Albion Cricket Club (LACC) designed to help develop and grow the sport in the Upper Clutha.
Anyone wanting to use the Wānaka Recreation Centre nets can just turn up and start playing.

ANITA LEWIS
QUEEN OF THE SMILE
they were stuck until a day ferry got them to Lyttelton. It took 18 months for their prefabricated house to arrive so the family stayed in a cottage with the sharemilking couple in Belfast for six months. “There were six of us in a room and Mum learned English by reading the newspaper,” recalls Anita. Four adults and seven kids somehow all packed into the farm owner’s Model T Ford with the picnic basket tied on the back. An amazing teacher, also a speech therapist, and school immersion, meant the kids learned English quickly.
She was the joyful, welcoming face of Skyline for 23 years, her bright hazel eyes and wide, beaming smile calming many a nervous tourist after they stepped off a hairy gondola ride.
Anita Lewis was Queenstown’s star of hospitality in her heyday. Any tourism staff needing tips on how to welcome guests needed look no further. That special gift was reflected in several prestigious awards during her time working Skyline’s Kiwi Magic, and then Kiwi Haka, ticketing desks. In 1997 Anita won the Telecom Hospitality Personality of the Year Award at the Queenstown Hospitality Awards. In 2001 she was presented with Queenstown Rotary’s Pride of Workmanship Award. “I loved my job meeting all the visitors and locals, and working with a great team,” she says, seven years after retiring at 73.
Renowned for going the extra mile, Anita started out at Skyline Gondola’s gift shop part-time in 1994. The customers wanted an inexpensive gift to take home so she wrote a children’s picture book, ‘The Teddies Visit Queenstown’, celebrating local adventure activities. She even sent a copy to Prince George, receiving a lovely thank you letter in return. Two more kids’ books followed.
Born in Holland in 1942 during World War II, her Belgian grandparents ran a knitting factory which they moved to Holland. During the war Anita spent a lot of time with her grandparents in Belgium. “There was a moat around our village and in winter we’d skate to school. I had a happy childhood,” says Anita.
When she was eight her parents were sponsored by a Dutch share-milking couple near Christchurch and immigrated to New Zealand with four kids in tow, aged one to nine. It was a month-long sailing, however, 1951 dock strikes in Wellington meant
St Mary’s College high school years in Christchurch were strict. “We weren’t allowed outside the gate without gloves and a hat on, summer too. There was no talking to boys on street corners, so we met several streets away.”
A prefect and librarian, Anita won the school’s Commercial Cup, then worked at the Public Trust as a legal department typist stenographer, saving money for her OE. Her mother, and sister, a baby, sailed with her to England on The Fair Sea, to stay with Dutch relatives, Anita staying on for 18 months. She worked in England at Bing Harris and Co, attending magnificent shows at the London Palladium – The Black And White Minstrel Show a stand-out. “My grandfather didn’t want me to leave so he secretly applied for a job for me in Brussels as an English shorthand typist. I travelled an hour by train each day.” Her grandfather shouted her many trips and took her on a restaurant and pub crawl for her 21st.
After a brave three-day stopover alone in New York on the way home, Anita was working in her
dad’s Christchurch
when
customer, an air hostess, convinced her she’d be a good one herself. After training in Wellington she launched into “an amazing career” as an air hostess for NAC, the national domestic airline. “I absolutely loved it, flying in DC3’s, Friendships and Viscounts. There was a lot more time to talk to passengers back then.” That was until an overnight stopover in Invercargill where she met her accountant husband, Bill Lewis, on a blind date at a Roman party. Anita was dressed in a toga. She moved back to her parent’s home to save money and they were married five months after meeting in 1966. Anita had to quit her job. “Married women couldn’t be NAC air hostesses back then.”
Five kids followed - for a brief 10 days she had four under four, and the family had many happy years on 1.2ha (3 acres) at Waikiwi, surrounded by ponies, sheep, pigs and chickens. With Bill president of the Southland Rugby Union and an accountant, Anita was roped in as secretary for both. She became president of the local Plunket Society and served at the kids’ kindy.
Prior to Bill semi-retiring and their move to Queenstown in 1990, Anita was caregiver in a rest-home, a job she loved and continued locally, including for the widow of Dr Bill Anderson, Molly Anderson, who lived until 102.
A two-year foray into Queenstown business with a friend during the early 1990s was “a great, social success and a financial disaster”, laughs Anita. Bodyline featured Queenstown’s first ‘Fit and Firm’ beds, sunbeds and aromatherapy. Then followed Skyline where she found her niche. Turning 80 this week isn’t slowing Anita down. She’s part of Altrusa Queenstown and its school reading programme, volunteers at the CanShop in Frankton, is learning Te Reo, and is an active member of the local RSA and St Peter’s Church. However, pride of place is family, some of whom live locally. “I’m very blessed to have 12 beautiful grandchildren,” she beams.

COMMUNITY NOTES
Marathon volunteering
By Juliette Hicks, Volunteer South
With the Queenstown Marathon this weekend the organisers are still looking for last minute volunteers to help out on Friday 18th and Sat 19th November in a number of roles including registration assistants, course marshals and finish line support. With an inducement of Free Skyline Gondola Annual pass to all volunteers and no experience necessary.
taxing and because there is such a variety of roles people can choose what works for them.
By volunteering Andi hopes that her children will see that giving is a reward in itself. “I don’t need formal rewards or recognition. Giving to the community is its own joy.”
Thinking of volunteering? Andi says “Embrace it with gusto. Regardless of where you are at in life, get amongst it. It’s so heart warming helping others. Marathon day is one of my favourite days of the year.”
Get the sign-up link on the website (queenstown-marathon.co.nz) or email volunteer.queenstown@ironman.com
Volunteer South is a charitable trust that engages and supports both tūao volunteers and volunteers involving organisations and community groups in the Southern region of Aotearoa, New Zealand. For more information about our services go to www.volunteersouth.org.nz
Marathon Road Closures
The Queenstown Marathon is on Saturday, which means thousands of people coming to town. Saturday 19 November will see road closure across the region and especially downtown therefore make sure you plan ahead and allow extra time – town will be very busy and while there are various road closures as part of the marathon there is also the ongoing street upgrades and arterials project. Gorge Road will be OPEN to through traffic on race day.
While the Sotheby’s International Realty Queenstown Marathon has the reputation for its scenic course, volunteer Andi Smillie says it’s the local flavour that keeps her coming back to help at an aid station. “I’m fizzing to help on the 19th. It’s my seventh marathon volunteering at an aid station and it’s always a huge buzz ‘’ says Andi.
Andi is one of 500+ local volunteers who register, marshal, hydrate and motivate participants and without whom the race could not take place. “At the aid station we treat all runners equally regardless of their ability and the best thing is being able to support a local who you have seen doing the hard mahi to get to this point.” As a Les Mills group fitness instructor Andi has gym members doing the run and she knows lots of runners by name. ”It’s so cool to be able to give them encouragement.” Each aid station provides two essentials - hydration and motivation. “It’s more than just handing out water. It’s almost motivation first, hydration next. What we say to them could provide the final kick to get them to the finish line.”
Andi and the team of volunteers take real pride in their aid station and work hard to make it the most memorable one on the course. “There’s an informal competition for the best aid station. We really get into it with music, dancing, high fives and calling out to participants. I’m a stickler for tidiness too so we are constantly doing our housework.”
Andi and her husband and two children have been in Queenstown for 22 years. They love the local community. An aid station pro, she also volunteers at the Motatapu, the Pioneer and Relay for Life. “I’m all about active relaxation” says Andi “Put me on a hike in the hills or cooking at home and I’m happy.”
Andi says that the marathon is a truly inclusive event and that there are volunteering opportunities for people of any age. “Because it’s such a fun community event a lot of older people just want to be involved and they can be.” She says a lot of the volunteer roles aren’t physically

Tourism for a Better Future - Community Meetings
“Tourism for a better future” is a strategy created with and for local communities.
The strategy is designed to move the region toward regenerative tourism by 2030. It was developed with input from communities across the district, gathered over the last year. The strategy will be implemented as a partnership between Destination Queenstown, Lake Wānaka Tourism, QLDC, Kai Tahu and the Department of Conservation.
The draft strategy was shared with the Queenstown Lakes community for feedback in August 2022. There were over 1600 visits to the site, more than 600 downloads of the strategy and 33 pieces of detailed feedback received from both individuals and organisations.
Some of the key themes that were common across the feedback were:
• prioritising decarbonisation
• aligning with the Climate and Biodiversity Plan
• management of visitor numbers
• inclusion of waste management and reduction strategies
• introducing stronger measurements in the strategy
• valuing our workforce and addressing associated challenges
Community meetings are scheduled across the region this week with international destination management experts, Destination Think. The meetings are designed to update everyone on the region’s destination management strategy that will pave the way towards regenerative tourism by 2030.

Unity at Queenstown Airport
by Jessica Allen
Queenstown Airport is doubling as an art gallery for the next few months. Natalya Doudell’s artwork titled ‘Unitiy’, will hang in the baggage claim area and is currently for sale through Wanaka Fine Art Gallery. If it’s sold while on display in the airport, a portion of the price will be donated to a local charity.
Tauranga-based Natalya was born in Ukraine and raised in Uzbekistan before moving to Aotearoa in 2003. She worked on the almost 10 metre by 2 metre artwork during the 2020 Covid-19 lockdown and it took more than six months to paint. The idea of the painting was the need for people from all different backgrounds to unify in the trying time of Covid. From a distance you can’t see too much detail, but as you get closer the painting comes to life and you can see all the intricate individual features that Natalya has included.
“During the pandemic and during lockdown, my partner and I loved it, even if we had to stay in our own bubble, which was just the two of us. I was painting non-stop – but all this news on TV from all over the globe was pretty daunting to me because people in Europe and other countries were in apartments. They were stuck in there, families were torn apart, and people were isolated. All of us are different but we suffer the same – whether you’re rich or poor, white or black, young or old. “I had this idea that all of us are so different but we should be connected because it was in the middle of the pandemic, and we didn’t know what was going to happen in the next few months or next year. I started painting and was painting for a few months nonstop,” says Natalya.
When she was painting, she had lots of people stopping by to have a look as they passed her – all were impressed with the work when they saw the painting up close at all the small details. Upon completion, Natalya sent the work to America for an art show and was surprised with the response. “I didn’t initially expect to get feedback from people – I was so overwhelmed. On some days I was crying because of course, I hoped people would like it and appreciate it, but I didn’t realise how deeply it touched people. I guess I achieved something with this one.”
The mega artwork had to be installed with the help of a scissor lift, and was hung at the airport in October. ‘Unity’ will continue to be displayed at the airport until after the Christmas period. If it hasn’t sold by that time, it will stay at the airport for a while longer, otherwise it will be shipped to its new home.
When viewing the painting, Natalya recommends that you view it from afar and then come closer and look at the details. This is where you will discover more, and it completely changes the artwork. She has been inundated with positive responses to her art, and is happy that it can be on display and shared with others. “I am absolutely thrilled and humbled by this work being on display at Queenstown Airport because people from all over the world come to Queenstown. It’s super amazing,” says Natalya.
‘Unity’ will be on display at Queenstown Airport baggage claim area until after the holiday period, and possibly beyond.

TIGHT FIVE – HANA PERA AOAKE
My friend the artist Jade Townsend once said that motherhood is like a sieve. It really is, because it peels everything back and makes you realise what’s valuable and important.
What are you currently exploring and how does this play out in your work?
I’m really interested in what kinship between all living and nonliving entities looks like, whether this is through whakapapa or the western philosophical canon I like to draw from both. This means how we as humans relate to our tupuna both human and non-human, so for example algae and bacteria, which are the earliest forms of life. I’ve been thinking a lot about how we build relationships between different life forms through whakapapa, but also how our bodies are made of 80% water and how the biggest organ we have is skin.
Alongside your visual art practice you are a respected writer of essays and poems, does one shape or move forward the other? Definitely. I’m still figuring out how they sit together but for the most part I think reading widely informs both how and why I write and how and why I make art. Reading helps me make sense of the world and writing and making art are extensions of me trying to make sense of everything.
What’s your biggest barrier to being an artist?
Time. I wish I could be a full time artist, but I’m primarily a māmā and then also work as a research contractor and writer. It means I have to be mindful with my time and what I want to make, because I’m also limited by resources.
When did it click?
I was living in Lisbon in Portugal just as the pandemic started, I was making these really elaborate earrings out of micro plastics I found at the beach. I showed them to this philosopher named Giovanni Tusa who liked them and asked if I enjoyed making them, that’s when I realised I could enjoy making art. It didn’t have to be this painful and anxious process.
What can we expect to see at your Broker exhibition?
I’ve been thinking a lot about colour and play since I had my daughter. It’s so much fun teaching her about the world through play. This exhibition is called Tākaro, which translates to a verb in Te reo Māori meaning ‘to play’. This really describes how I approach making art in general, but also how my worldview has changed dramatically since having a child.

DRESS UP FOR A good cause
By Jessica Allen
The first Awards & Gala for Women’s Refuge Services in the region will take place this month. It will raise funds and awareness for The Women’s Refuge and Central-Lakes Family Services. The event’s organiser, Julia Strelou, hopes the evening will play a part in reducing violence in the area with funds going towards building a safe house in Queenstown.
The event has been a long time in the making due to Covid-related delays. It is reported that one in three New Zealand women have suffered domestic violence, and currently in Queenstown, there is no safe house for anyone who has experienced this. Julia hopes to make this an annual event to raise funds for the region, and says that she was nervous to first approach the Women’s Refuge as she wasn’t sure if she could pull this off, but she’s actually been amazed by the support.
“The community has been so supportive, from the awards sponsors, to other sponsors coming on board after the award sponsor positions were filled, and then getting things for the charity auction. I’ve received over 25 items all up between the silent auction and the live auction – that’s quite a few items to sell.
“I’ve just had women coming out of the woodwork, really to say ‘this event is so amazing, I want to support it.’ Whether that’s been offering to do charity work, offering to speak, offering to be a sponsor, or just saying ‘I’m going to come along,’ and that’s really meaningful to me,” says Julia.
Some of the charity auction experiences include accommodation in local hotels, spa treatments, ski passes, a round of golf, jetboat rides, and artworks. Anything that doesn’t sell on the night will be sold online with the proceeds going to the charity. There’s also an awards portion of the night with four categories; inspirational, entrepreneurial, community recognition, and resilience. Two of the many inspirational nominees are Cassandra Treadwell, founder of So They Can, an international not-for-profit that focuses on educating children living in East Africa, and Pauline Blomfield, who has developed K9 Medical Detection, where they are training dogs to detect cancer as early as possible.
“The idea is to raise up and celebrate the female leaders and changemakers in our region. When we opened the awards nominations, I got maybe 50 nominations and the calibre of them was really high. I was blown away by how many amazing females we have in our region, and also just how humble and grateful the finalists are – they’re all so humble about their achievements and they’re all so grateful for this event and the platform that it offers. Empowering women and stopping domestic violence go hand-in-hand, so it’s. a nice synergy between the awards and the event.”
The gala will take place atop the picturesque Skyline Gondola and will include awards, auctions and speakers. Purchasing a table for your company is a great way to support the region and have a nice night out – a limited number of tables are still available for purchase in addition to single tickets. If you’re unable to attend, you can donate at givealittle.co.nz/cause/raisingfunds-for-otago-family-violence-services – the donations made here will go directly to the Otago chapter of the Women’s Refuge and support our region.
The Awards & Gala for Women’s Refuge Services will take place on the 19th of November. If you’d like to get involved or pick up a last-minute ticket for what is sure to be an inspirational and engaging night, head to queenstownwomensrefugegala.co.nz

Ruapehu’s slippery slopes: the uncertain future of snow sports in a climate emergency
With New Zealand’s two major North Island ski fields in financial trouble, the combined impact of COVID-19 on national and international tourism and this year’s very poor snow season has hit hard. But this may be only a sign of things to come as climate change affects snow sports globally. Ruapehu Alpine Lifts (RAL), which runs the Turoa and Whakapapa ski fields, has debts of NZ$40 million and has gone into voluntary administration. Despite calls for government support, Minister of Tourism and Economic and Regional Development Stuart Nash has said there will be no more funding beyond the $15 million in loans already provided since 2018.
For now, then, the future of snow sports on the slopes of Mt Ruapehu remains uncertain, directly and indirectly affecting many businesses and livelihoods. But RAL is not the first ski company to struggle under increasingly unpredictable winters.
Shorter or less predictable ski seasons and warmer temperatures are already causing closures elsewhere. Some foreign ski fields are pivoting to cater for summer recreational tourism such as mountain biking and hiking.
Some ski resorts in North America, Europe and Australia are now facing uncertain futures. One US study found revenues could fall 40-60% (on average) by 2080. The research is clearly showing the ways we currently practise and consume snow sports are unsustainable.
No business like snow business
Scientists from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) recently modelled the potential impact of climate change on snow levels in New Zealand. Their report showed an average gradual decrease in snow at nearly all elevations as the century progresses.
While all ski areas will experience this, the effects will vary depending on their location and elevation. Under the warmer climate change predictions, the study showed snow depths between 83% and 45% of current maximums at lower elevation sites by 2040.
By 2090, this will be further reduced (on average) to approximately 48% to 9% of current maximum snow depths. According to NIWA snow and ice scientist Dr Jordy Hendrikz:
From these results we expect to see a gradual change in snow levels but […] we should be able to continue to make snow, even under a more extreme climate scenario, right out to the 2090s.
The report was considered good news for New Zealand snow areas, which are reportedly “confident they will adapt to any risks from climate change”. But is a future for ski fields based mostly on making artificial snow really good news?
While some may see innovations in snow-making technologies as futureproofing the ski industry, resorts becoming highly dependent on their capacity to make artificial snow raises serious ethical and environmental concerns. The process uses huge amounts of water and chemical and biological additives, with ramifications for mountain ecosystems and potentially human health.
Greening the snow?
This presents a dilemma. For those privileged enough to visit often expensive ski resorts, the pristine mountain environment is central to the experience. Yet ski resorts are far from environmentally friendly.
With thousands of visitors every day, they have enormous carbon footprints when various factors are accounted for: travel to and from ski fields (planes, 4WD vehicles, buses), the energy demands of lifts and facilities, snow grooming and machinery maintenance.
It’s true that over the past decade there have been attempts to green the snow industry. Ski resorts have invested in sustainability planning and adaption strategies, from recycling food waste to using wind turbines and solar energy. Some clothing and equipment companies are also working to produce more sustainable and eco-friendly products.
Despite signs of change, however, there are questions about whether a form of greenwashing is taking place in the snow sports industry, as it has across the sports sector in general, where many organisations have made superficial claims of environmentalism. Research has shown ski resorts can vary widely in their communication of sustainability efforts versus their actual levels of environmentally responsible action.
From pleasure to politics
Research also suggests that committed lifestyle sports participants like skiers, snowboarders and surfers can develop close relationships with the natural environment that encourage more environmentally sustainable practices. For example, Protect Our Winters (POW) is an international nonprofit organisation (with a New Zealand chapter) where skiers, snowboarders, hikers, climbers and mountain bikers work with scientists, policymakers and politicians to advocate for greater protection of mountains.
As some scholars have observed, however, there is a degree of ecological irony in an industry and its participants claiming to be environmentally conscious while maintaining highly mobile and consumerist lifestyles.
There are other strands of resistance, too. In Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world, mountain ownership and management have long been integral to Indigenous struggles for self-determination. Local communities have recently challenged expansion plans by ski resorts for both cultural and environmental reasons.
Many ski resorts have been built on stolen land. They still represent the privilege and wealth of settler societies. Only a few acknowledge the historical and contemporary politics of ski resort land use.
Any efforts to develop a sustainable ski industry, then, will have to include conserving the environmental integrity and cultural diversity associated with the mountains themselves. But the fact remains that climate change means the future is bleak for the snow sports industry.
While the full effects will be felt by some regions, resorts and communities more than others, the policy questions raised by the troubles at RAL and Ruapehu’s iconic ski fields are urgent: what is the future of snow sports, and what are the ethics of pursuing such activities in a climate emergency?
