The Queenstown Writers Festival is a boutique festival bringing writers and readers together.

It started back in 2018 when a group of friends decided that Queenstown needed its own book festival. It was never going to be on the grand scale of the city-based literary festivals, but we knew Queenstown could bring a unique flavour. We felt it was a good opportunity to bust the myth that all we do here is ski year-round, with little time to engage in reading. Since our first festival in 2019, we’ve continued to reach out to the national (and international) literary community. We’ve brought a huge range of topnotch writers to town. The feedback has been great – of course, from our wonderful Queenstown community whom we already know are great readers and arts fans – but also from the writers, who’ve loved meeting the bookloving community here. For our fourth festival (11 – 13 November 2022), we’ve invited top novelists, poets, playwrights and non-fiction writers to talk about their work, share stories and lead writing workshops. Two authors distinguished at this year’s Ockham New Zealand Book Awards will come to Queenstown for the festival. Wellington writer Whiti Hereaka (our special opening event guest) won the supreme prize for fiction for her epic retelling of Māori mythology Kurangaituku. Rebecca K Reilly won the best first book of fiction prize for her novel Greta & Valdin, about a brother and sister navigating modern romance and weathering the small storms of their eccentric Māori–Russian–Catalonian family. Otago-based crime and historical fiction author Paddy Richardson will return to the festival for a second time and the internationally acclaimed Kate de Goldi will talk about her latest book, Eddy Eddy. There are events with investigative journalist Stephen Davis, who’s penned books on disinformation and UK government cover-ups; Christine Leunens, author of the book that was made into Taika Waititi’s film Jojo Rabbit; and sustainability advocate Ethically Kate with her inspiring new book Better, Bolder, Different. The festival finishes with a poetry extravaganza. There’ll be a showing of Rail:Lines, a film by performance poets Laura Williamson, Liz Breslin and Annabel Wilson, who biked the Central Otago Rail Trail bringing their fun brand of performance poetry to small town halls along the way. Afterwards, there’s an open mic night hosted by a posse of top poets from Christchurch – it’s a great opportunity to get involved in the performance poetry scene. I encourage you to jump online and check out our festival programme (it’s on the QT App, Eventfinda and our website) to see the full menu of bookish events. Wherever your literary tastes lie, there’s plenty to get stuck into at this year’s festival. We look forward to seeing you there. Bethany G. Rogers - Queenstown Writers Festival

A child carefully crawls through a world of plastic waste in search of water but knows she won’t make it if the blood-drinking gulls catch a glimpse of her. A young woman plots her way onto the latest reality TV programme, where murderers are publicly executed in a manner that mirrors their crimes. Mice conspire with a seamstress to bring her dead fiancé back to life using an old English tradition. SHORT. READABLE. DISTURBING. Lobby group claims ‘no one wants airport at Tarras’ by Paul Taylor

Plans for a new international jet airport that would rival Queenstown Airport suffer from a “severe lack of social licence”, say campaigners. Christchurch International Airport Limited [CIAL] is exploring the potential for a new regional airport on 750-hectares of land at Tarras, a small farming settlement between Wanaka and Cromwell. With a 2.2km-long runway, it would be capable of landing wide-bodied jets. Last month, Queenstown Airport Corporation published its plans for the next 10 years, forecasting passenger numbers could grow to 3.2 million (arrivals and departures) by 2032. QAC is working on a masterplan to redevelop its terminal and aerodrome, as it looks to expand to meet demand, and plans to take on debt Queenstown is the main route into the lower South Island for Australians, with daily flights to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, as well as domestic connections to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. CIAL’s Tarras airport could not only take a share of that business, but also open up long-haul routes and airfreight routes. However, Sustainable Tarras, a lobby group of locals opposed to the plans, have geared up to a war-footing and are releasing videos on YouTube each month attacking the plan. The latest, released last week, says there are numerous surveys and reports which clearly show that Christchurch Airport doesn’t have community support. “It’s not just those of us living in Tarras who feel this way, but people throughout Central Otago and further afield”, Marilyn Duxson, deputy chair of Sustainable Tarras, says. The video also highlights industry commentators, experts and media saying the same thing.” Dr Duxson says the CIAL team seem to be “ploughing on, regardless” with her group and others getting “no answers, no engagement and no real dialogue” for the past 830 days. She says there are concerns CIAL are creating a “façade of carefully curated meetings”, so that they can later claim they had community support, while

telling campaigners to visit the project website for updates, rather than engage directly. “We don’t need PR spin and general statements - we need dialogue. We need honesty,” Dr Duxson says. CIAL Project Director Michael Singleton tells Lakes Weekly Bulletin, in a statement provided through a PR firm: “The latest video shared by a group opposed to our project is largely made up of their opinions and assumptions – we encourage people to go to the project’s website for accurate information - www.centralotagoairport.co.nz. “We respect the group’s fixed opposition to a new regional airport for Central Otago. However, we continue to engage regularly across Central Otago with a wide variety of people.” Both Queenstown Airport Corporation and Christchurch International Airport Limited are majority owned by their respective councils, which means ratepayers could be eyeing the potential debt ramifications should Tarras go ahead. QAC plans to take on up to $334 million of debt to finance its expansion plans, while CIAL has already spent $45m on Tarras land and campaigners estimate a new airport could cost up to $1 billion.

Plans for greener future by Paul Taylor

Air New Zealand wants to begin replacing its turbo-prop planes with more sustainable aircraft by 2030. The national carrier last week announced it is accelerating its programme to make “zero emissions aircraft technology” a reality in New Zealand.

In the short term, Air NZ plans to reduce emissions by using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), but wants to fully decarbonise its domestic network before 2050.

Mission Next Generation Aircraft aims to see it fly its first commercial demonstrator flight by 2026, and begin replacing its Q300 fleet with a more sustainable aircraft – likely green hydrogen or battery hybrid systems – from 2030. Air NZ boss Greg Foran says the company is in close negotiations with partners and plans to sign letters of intent by the end of the year. “We have bold sustainability goals. Conventional business processes are not going to address the technology or infrastructure required to meet them. We want to lead the roll out of zero emission aircraft and will work alongside aircraft developers, innovators and infrastructure providers to give them the confidence they’re developing a product that’s a viable option for us. “The next three years will be focused on supporting the building, testing and certifying of aircraft and associated infrastructure. By 2026, we’re aiming to have our first zero emissions aircraft – either cargo or passenger – take flight in New Zealand.”

Architects win national award for ‘show-stopping’ garden Leading Queenstown landscape architects Baxter Design Group Limited are celebrating a national win at the 2022 Resene New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architecture (NZILA) Awards. The team brought home the Award of Excellence for Residential and Gardens for their landscape design on a Millbrook Resort home – one of only two national awards given for residential work. Paddy Baxter and Mark Stallard from Baxter Design say they’re thrilled with the result. “The award recognises the high level of detailing and execution in our work but also our ability to work effectively with clients. It really acknowledges what we do as a business and have been doing for 30 years,” Baxter says. The established team of award-winning landscape architects have undertaken many large-scale projects in the Whakatipu Basin and further afield. “Residential projects form an important part of our wider portfolio and it’s fantastic to be nationally recognised for this project. “We had an outstanding site and a great client, who allowed us to express our full range of creative design on a scale not often seen in residential design.” The garden flows through a series of connected spaces, with stone walls and clipped planting reflecting the regional rural landscape while also drawing on the style of European formal “It’s one of the largest residential gardens at Millbrook Resort, which means everything had to meet stringent Millbrook Design Control covenants,” Baxter says. “This was the only short-listed residential award in the South Island and only one of two national awards given for residential work. We were humbled to be acknowledged by the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects for our work.” NZILA judges say the “elegant and graceful” garden is very much in keeping with local environs and the wider context, integrating the home into its surrounding landscapes. “The garden responds to its sense of place with its materials and indigenous plants,” they said.

The judges praise the scale and placement of enormous boulders in direct relationship to the surrounding mountain tops. “The quality of detailing and execution is exemplary throughout the construction.” Client Stewart Callaghan says he and his family “couldn’t be happier” with Baxter and Stallard’s work both during the process and with the outcome. “It was a very challenging assignment to transform a rolling hill into a magnificent New Zealand alpine garden with some inspiration from classic Italian gardens and French village squares and boulevards,” he says. “Baxter Design brought a blend of creativity, discipline, technical ability, problem-solving, attention to detail and user-friendliness to an overseas based client to the project. “The garden is a show-stopper at any time of the year.”

COMMUNITY NOTES The REOSA Walk - The long pathway for Community News two sisters It is said that the first step is always the hardest.

New Mental health crisis support service to launch in December

This has certainly been the case for two sisters in their 60’s who are walking and biking the length of Aotearoa to raise awareness about the negative ripple effects of sexual abuse.

A new mental health crisis support service for Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago residents is expected to be operational before the end of the year, with Central Lakes Family Services as its provider.

Libby Taylor and Kate Hattaway are sisters of popular local Anna Arndt, owner of Erik’s Fish and Chips. All three are sexual abuse survivors who have deciding that rather than dwelling on the past, they want to use their life experiences, energy and determination in a positive way. They feel it is important that people communicate in a positive way about the level of harm created in our communities by sexual abuse. Part of this is acknowledging that the problem is getting worse not better and only by coming together positively can we fight it. Libby and Kate started their 2,100km journey - The REOSA Walk - on October 1st in Cape Reinga/Te Rerenga Wairua and will end the walk in Bluff mid-November. The REOSA Walk is to create hope, dispel loneliness and encourage understanding by raising awareness about the negative ripple effects of sexual abuse. The ongoing ripple effects are often overlooked but consequences reach far beyond the survivors of sexual abuse. On their nationwide journey Katie and Libby are doing a number of supporters walks including one in Queenstown on Tuesday 15th November. The walk starts and returns to Jellicoe Park at 9.30 am, and everyone is very very welcome. No need to register just come along. There is a small talk at the beginning about books they are giving away and hope how we can all help to curb New Zealand’s terrible sexual abuse statistics through awareness of how harmful sexual abuse is to the victims. To learn more about REOSA and The REOSA Walk, visit the website https://www.reosa.co.nz/ follow them on Facebook or contact Anna Arndt on annaarndt@gmail.com

Fiona Young and Tina Mongston from the Central Lakes Family Services team goes with New Mental health crisis support service to launch in December

The new service will predominantly be for adults aged 18 years and over, but with flexibility to provide for younger people if needed. Central Lakes Family Services is an NGO embedded across the region, with branches in Queenstown, Wānaka and Alexandra. It currently runs the regional Women’s Refuge service and provides a range of social services supporting those experiencing family violence, sexual harm, parenting support, perinatal supports as well as Ministry of Justice and Corrections programmes. The new mental health support service will be a two-stage launch, with the first stage - outreach support - expected to start in early December. It will sit alongside the current 24/7 regional crisis response service, providing more local options to support people in mental distress including those who may otherwise have needed to be admitted to acute inpatient mental health services. Anyone requiring acute mental health care will be able to access the service via a referral from Specialist Mental Health and Addiction (MHA) teams or General Practices. Services will include home-based support for people experiencing acute distress, as well as education and support for whānau and carers. The workforce will include registered health professionals, social workers, and support workers. Value will also be placed on peer support from the perspective of lived experience and recovery, so peer support staff will be an essential part of the team. The second stage of the crisis support service - providing short-term residential care – is still a work-in-progress and more details will be released once a suitable location is secured. Toni Gutschlag, Executive Director of Mental Health, Addictions and Intellectual Disability for Te Whatu Ora Southern, says the new service is designed to provide better crisis support and more options closer to home for Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago individuals experiencing mental distress. “Strong professional relationships and a joined-up healthcare pathway for crisis intervention support will be essential for success and I’m particularly excited about being able to offer a home-based service”. Both mayors of the district are also in full support, with Queenstown Lakes District Council’s Glyn Lewers saying it’s “wonderful news to have this much needed localised service” and Tim Cadogan of Central Otago District Council saying that “it will provide invaluable support for our communities”.

Green Drinks: Surplus to Sublime Sustainable Queenstown and KiwiHarvest are challenging the Millhouse chefs to create a three-course dinner at their restaurant at Millbrook Resort, using food which would otherwise be destined for landfill. The dinner will use food rescued by KiwiHarvest Queenstown in the preceding days and fresh produce from Millbrook Resort’s Kitchen Garden, and act as a fundraiser for the two charities. This event is the second of its kind to be held in Queenstown, following on from a sell-out debut in 2021.

REJUVENATE at the water’s edge

Treat yourself to a weekend away at Edgewater, Lake Wānaka

KiwiHarvest rescues 170,000 - 200,000kg of good quality surplus food , the equivalent to over half a million meals every month, and diverts this back to people who are struggling across the country. “Queenstown Lakes is often thought of as an affluent area and whilst that is in part true, there are increasing numbers of families and individuals struggling to put food on the table with the worsening cost of living here. Rents, mortgage rates, price of food and fuel have only added to the financial stress after Covid. This fundraising event is a perfect fit for us with both Millbrook and Sustainable Queenstown at the forefront in the drive to make our region more sustainable within the food industry.” - Gary Hough, KiwiHarvest Branch Coordinator. “Food waste ends up in the tip along with the rest of our rubbish. When food decomposes without oxygen in our landfills it releases methane which is a harmful greenhouse gas and a big contributor to the warming of our atmosphere.” says Jess Lamont, Executive Officer at Sustainable Queenstown. Event details: • Monday 21st November, 6pm - 10pm, at the Millhouse, Millbrook Resort, Arrowtown • Optional tour of Millbrook’s Kitchen Garden at 6pm • Tickets are $120 and available through Humanitix with all proceeds being donated to KiwiHarvest and Sustainable Queenstown.

MENTAL HEALTH

Why you should talk to strangers on a bus by John Glover

Around a year ago, I was on a bus heading to a regenerative tourism workshop when I fell into conversation with someone who I vaguely knew. It turned out that the ‘conversation’ was actually a job interview - it was just that I didn’t know it at the time! We talked about wellbeing within the workplace - something I felt was a key issue impacting migrant and seasonal workers in the local tourism and hospitality sector. Uncertainty around visas, housing issues, disconnect from family, lack of training, lack of belonging and how they were valued were a few of the things that sprang to mind. I felt this should be addressed as the tourism industry became ‘regenerative”. He invited me to a training session on the topic. I agreed, and long story short, it turned out that I was actually being signed up to be trained to deliver the GoodYarn mental health literacy programme to our local community as part of a trial project across the district. The content was a real eye-opener for me. I’d worked in my own small business for over 20 years and had ended up in a pretty bad head space that manifested itself in anger, panic attacks, stress, negativity and generally not being a great person to be around. The workshop taught me to understand the whats and whys around mental health and mental illness, strategies to help and what others can do or say to support someone. Which was why I was on a bus to Wanaka in the first place. To make a change in my life in the work I did and my working environment. Made possible only by a loving partner who recognised a change was needed and stepped in to provide me the opportunity for change. In hindsight, my bus buddy was very perceptive and recognised that maybe someone who’d been impacted by poor mental health could be well placed to lead conversations on the topic within the community - and as a workshop facilitator, I’d be able to relate the training content to the everyday realities of working in a small business. And that is the key to the strength of what the team at headlight are doing in this district - using peer to peer conversations to give people the knowledge and confidence to talk about mental health and mental illness, just as if it were physical health or injury. headlights’ facilitators, speak from the heart, from personal experience and with a desire to make a difference. In a workplace, we assess risks, have health and safety plans, and have first aiders. We focus on what we know and can see that does harm to our physical health. The difference with mental health is that the causes and effects aren’t as obvious (unless you know what to look for) and the first aid box has a few different tools in it.

IF YOU NEED HELP NOW 1737 Need to talk, Freecall or text 1737, 24/7, for support from trained counsellors. www.1737.org.nz Depression: P: 0800 111757 Free text 4202 | www.depression.org.nz Suicide Crisis Helpline: P: 0508 828 865 | www.lifeline.org.nz The Lowdown: P: 0800 111 757 / Free text 5626 | www.thelowdown.co.nz Youthline: P: 0800 376 633 | Free text 234 | www.youthline.co.nz

We all know how hard things are staffing wise right now. So it makes a huge amount of sense to look after everyone in the team. The knowledge gained at a GoodYarn workshop could make the difference between someone who might not be coping at work, being supported and being able to stay at work. The ripple effect of poor mental health and mental illness is significant, often impacting far beyond an individual. Any employer who can invest 3 hours of a staff members’ time to attend a workshop is also sending a great big “We care about you” message to their employees. Things like that matter in a world where recruitment and retention are key. Become an employer of choice. And of course the not too surprising, but often overlooked outcome, is that changes in our workplaces that support improved mental health also increase productivity and loyalty. So maybe it’s time to start that conversation in your workplace? When was the last time that FUN became a KPI? Over the last 18 months over 300 people have attended one of our workshops and 100% of them have told us they would recommend the workshop to others. So don’t just take our word for it. So next time you’re worried about making conversation on a bus don’t be - it might just lead you on a journey to a different destination to the one you’d planned. The GoodYarn small business workshops are designed to help business owners and staff to talk about mental health in the workplace. The headlight team will be delivering regular small business workshops until June 2023. Spaces are limited to 15 per workshop, maximum 2 per business. Workshops are subsidised by Te Hau Toka and there is a seat fee of $35 + GST per person. To book online or for more info visit www.headlight.org.nz

Johnson & Johnson is to buy a company that helps the heart pump blood Johnson & Johnson, one of the world’s biggest makers of medical devices, said it will purchase Abiomed Inc. for about $17.3 billion, building on its portfolio of technology to assist heart function. J&J is planning to spin off its consumer unit next year, to focus on higher returns from its pharmaceutical and medical technology divisions. Abiomed makes almost all of its money through the sale of Impella heart pumps — small devices that are threaded through arteries into the heart to help it move blood through the body. Impella devices are used when a patient’s heart isn’t pumping enough blood to oxygenate the body, to increase the rate of blood flow, or for a patient undergoing a high-risk heart surgery, to help the heart function during the procedure. FCC calls for TikTok ban A member of the Federal Communications Commission called on the US government to ban TikTok last week over concerns the app exposes private American data to Chinese interests. The video-centric TikTok, which has been downloaded more than 200 million times in the US, is owned by Shanghai-based ByteDance and has been in negotiations with the federal government over a security deal. Brendan Carr, one of four current FCC commissioners, asked both Apple and Google to remove the app from their stores in June after leaked audio tapes at TikTok showed private US data were accessed numerous times from China. Although the FCC can’t regulate TikTok directly, its remarks historically have sway in Congress, including last year’s ban on Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei.

Scientists discover anti-inflammatory molecules that decline in the aging brain

Dogs in Queenstown Gardens

The molecules, called SGDGs, may lead to new ways to treat agerelated neurological diseases. Aging involves complicated plot twists and a large cast of characters: inflammation, stress, metabolism changes, and many others. Now, a team of Salk Institute scientists reveal another factor implicated in the aging process—a class of lipids called SGDGs (3-sulfogalactosyl diacylglycerols) that decline in the brain with age and may have anti-inflammatory effects.

A friendly reminder that dogs must be kept on a leash in Te Kararo Queenstown Gardens. Some people, with and without their pooches, exercise and enjoy this space without wanting to run into another dog. Thank you!

The research, helps unravel the molecular basis of brain aging, reveals new mechanisms underlying age-related neurological diseases, and offers future opportunities for therapeutic intervention. Salk.edu

Judge blocks Penguin Random House-Simon & Schuster merger A federal judge has blocked Penguin Random House’s proposed purchase of Simon & Schuster, agreeing with the Justice Department that the joining of two of the world’s biggest publishers could “lessen competition” for “top-selling books.” U.S. District Court Judge Florence Y. Pan announced the decision in a brief statement last Monday, adding that much of her ruling remained under seal at the moment because of “confidential information.” She asked the two sides to meet with her Friday and suggest redactions. Penguin Random House quickly condemned the ruling, which it called “an unfortunate setback for readers and authors.” The publisher said it would seek an expedited appeal. AP

Two days of action packed boat racing is coming to Glendhu Bay, near Wanaka, this weekend (November 12-13) for round one of the 2022 Hydro Thunder NZ Championship. It is the first time the event has raced at Glendhu Bay on Lake Wanaka, which event organiser Denise Preece says is a perfect location. “It’s an ideal venue with the motor camp and the viewing right there in front of you,” she said. “We hope this will be the first of many events out there.” The racing will feature six boat classes from Juniors to the prestigious Grand Prix (GP) Hydroplanes which reach speeds up to 280 kilometres per hour. Competitors will be looking for a strong start to the five round racing series with their accumulated points determining the New Zealand Champion. The feature event is the competition for the coveted Masport Cup, which the GP Hydroplanes will race for on Sunday. Denise said the cup holder gets to decide where they will defend the cup, so the decision to race at Glendhu Bay was made by Masport Cup holder Jason Haggerty (Cromwell). Jason will defend the cup in his boat Lady Liz, and Denise said it will be hotly contested. “Seven GP Hydroplanes will be competing and pretty much any one of them has a good chance of winning,” she said. The strongest competition is likely to come from brothers Jack and Ken Lupton who have just returned from competing overseas. Jack has won the Masport Cup three times and is the only New Zealander to win a North American title. The long range forecast for this weekend is for perfect racing conditions with warm temperatures and light winds. “Spectator viewing will be excellent and there is viewing on the water in a specified zone,” Denise said Tickets can be purchased on entry and are priced from $25 with children 15 years old and under free. TOMORROW’S FUTURE

By Sue Fea

- CELEBRATING The

Kids

The Wakatipu’s wealth of talent starts small with the kids and recently those talents have been rewarded with some very deserving recipients receiving scholarship funding to further their dreams, while younger students have won prizes. Last week (November 2) the Kate Moetaua Foundation awarded five talented Wakatipu High School students, who excelled across sports, arts or music, a total of $3500 between them to fund further study or tuition and reach their full potential. On hand to present the awards was former, much-loved Wakatipu High School and community drama teacher Kate’s eldest daughter Anika. Now in her first year of studying at Otago University, Anika is the chair of the foundation which she and her sisters and dad set up in her mother’s honour in 2019. “This is the fourth year of the Kate Moetaua Foundation and it hasn’t gotten any less rewarding,” says Anika. “What started as a small goal to help someone buy at least a pair of boots has turned into something way bigger and is continuing to grow. Continuing Mum’s legacy is something that my family and I are incredibly proud of and we can’t wait for the future of the foundation.” A gentle and caring soul with a passion to launch young people into their full potential, Kate Moetaua passed away in 2018.

From left, Malia, Teaukura and Anika Moetaua, of the Foundation, Jacob Marriot, Billie Carey, Minna Zhu, Megan McCulloch, Caitlyn Hollyer, and Wakatipu High School principal Steve Hall

The Wakatipu community raised funds for her treatment, and then after she passed away continued to raise funds to set up a foundation to help local youth who needed some financial assistance. Kate’s family says she dedicated her life to teaching, influencing the lives of so many young people, opening their eyes to the world of performance and helping them to gain confidence on and off the stage. She inspired so many people and one of her final wishes was for a foundation that supported young talented people in the sporting, cultural, education and arts arenas in Wakatipu.

The fifth recipient, Megan McCulloch, is a talented dancer and choreographer and is heading to the En Pointe Dance Academy Advance Programme with her funds while she studies in Wellington next year. It’s four years since the Kate Moetaua Foundation was formed and this is its third year awarding scholarships locally. To read stories from some of the previous winners or to find out how to apply next year see: www.katemoetauafoundation.org

The scholarships are run through the Wakatipu Community Foundation and its grants and scholarship co-ordinator Eunice Borrie says they give a huge hand up to gifted young people who may otherwise miss major opportunities to reach their potential. “While Queenstown has a rich arts and cultural scene, the reality is that performing at a national level, getting higher level tuition, or travelling for sports competitions puts extra financial pressure on families,” says Eunice. Each year students are invited to apply for funds to help them go higher in their chosen specialty. This year the sport’s awards went to swimmer Jacob Marriott and ice hockey player Caitlyn Hollier. Jacob regularly places in the top 10 in national swimming competitions, but the costs of training and travel to these competitions adds up, so his scholarship will be put towards attending New Zealand competitions, says Eunice. Caitlyn’s dream is to play ice hockey for a USA university-based team. Caitlyn was recently selected for the NZ Ice Ferns, and she’s a member of the Queenstown women’s team which won the National Ice Hockey League so she’s well on her way. Billie Carey was the top recipient of the arts award this year, and dreams of being a top composer and producer of music for film and recording artists. Billie has received a number of awards for her songwriting and performance, and will use the funds towards more tutoring. Minna Zhu, who is a talented musician and writer, is going to use her scholarship funds to attend a Youth Jazz Band experience in Wellington later this year to further her music skills.

In another accolade for Megan McCulloch, this year’s two Akarua Arrowtown Autumn Festival Community Scholarships went to Megan, and fellow Year 13 Wakatipu High School student Mikayla Evans. Both young women have a long and impressive record of community volunteering. Megan’s love and talent for dance and choreography has also been a key way for her to give back to the community and she’s usually on stage, or choreographing, for school and community productions, as well as supporting younger dancers. She also helps out in the community in other ways, like Cancer Society Daffodil Day, the Wakatipu Youth Council, a mental health initiative, Letters to Strangers, and the Student Volunteer Army. Mikayla is also involved in dance, and started her volunteering career as a Mini Belle in the Arrowtown Autumn Festival Parade many years ago. She regularly helps out at many organisations and events from dance and theatre and the environment to sporting events and school leadership. The festival scholarship aims to recognise and reward two local Year 13 students each year who show a strong sense of community involvement and leadership. Worth $2500, it’s intended to help fund the recipients’ next phase of their development, such as costs associated with further study, or vocational training.

The talents sure don’t stop there. Staff at the Department of Conservation in Queenstown were super impressed with the calibre of entries in its first ever Conservation Week Writing Competition. DOC Queenstown Visitor Centre supervisor Fiona Peat says local Wakatipu schools were informed about the competition via the Enviroschools Network. The theme was based around the recent Conservation Week and primary schoolage students were asked to write about taking a moment to act for nature. “We wanted to know what ‘acting for nature’ meant to them,” says Fiona. The kids interpreted and expressed this with their own individual flair. This ranged from cleverly-crafted and motivating fictional stories, like that of Best Creative Writing winner Shiloh Percy, 11, and beautifully descriptive poetry like that of Act for Nature Poem winner Grace Reid, also 11. Kaden Speirs, 8, of Arrowtown School, was stand-out winner in the Best Volunteer WriteUp. “We had one wonderful entry that was a drawing of the native plantings that had been done by their school and Queenstown Primary School’s Trees For Survival Programme really stood out,” says Fiona. It was encouraging to see the work that was going into conservation in local schools, she says. “We received an awesome video of the Waste Free Days being run at Queenstown Primary School during which no wrappings are allowed.”

Shiloh Percy with her winning prizes for the DOC Conservation Week Writing Competition

DOC received dozens of entries aged from five to 11 or 12 years old, representing almost every school in the Wakatipu.

“I think we were really inspired by these kids,” says Fiona. “They’re really aware of the power they can have to make a positive difference to the environment and it was great to see how excited they were to share that with us. All of the entries awarded placings are on display at the Visitor Centre. Prizes ranged from generously donated one-year Kiwi Birdlife Park family passes and DOC family hut passes to collections of card games.

The great(est) walk season by Jessica Allen

The DoC huts are open, and Ultimate Hikes will kick off their walks early on November 16 – hiking season is in full swing! With the welcoming back of international tourists, it’s gearing up to be the busiest season in years, and with it comes a much-welcome summer revival to town. For the first time since pre-Covid, hut spots on the big hikes in the area sold out within hours of release – spots on the Milford Track were fully reserved within a record three minutes. For the upcoming season, 19% of bookings were made by international visitors – Queenstown Airport is expecting more visitors in November this year than at the same time in 2019. DoC Heritage and Visitor Director Tim Bamford says “International visitor numbers have been climbing since the border with Australia reopened. We expect these iconic destinations will be busier this summer – and we’ll be watching with interest. Despite the border restrictions, domestic travel impacts from COVID-19 being in the community and closures such as on Heaphy and Lake Waikaremoana tracks, DoC’s visitor facilities were well used over the last year.” This year’s Great Walks season marks its 30th anniversary – in that time the walks have become a big part of New Zealand and Queenstown’s identity. Created in 1992 to manage the countries iconic tracks, the Great Walks have helped to stop the trails becoming overwhelmed with walkers and campers. They’ve gained international notoriety as well – earlier this year, TIME Magazine’s World’s Greatest Places included Queenstown, with the Great Walks being cited as a reason for Americans to visit. The view from the top of McKinnon Pass on the Milford Track Hike

Ultimate Hikes General Manager Noel Saxon says that the company is seeing an increase in Australian tourists booking into some of their hikes as well as a big increase in customers visiting from the US. The majority of the bookings are still taken up by the domestic market and they’ve opened additional spots to keep up with demand. “We’ve extended our season a little bit because the last two years we’ve operated at quite a reduced capacity due to the obvious reasons of only having a domestic market – we were very well supported by that domestic market, but this year things are looking a lot more positive. We have opened up a lot more spaces and we’re about to kick off shortly. “We’re just looking forward to getting back into some sort of semi-pre-Covid times, and it’s nice to be able to welcome international customers back in. Our staff and team are keen to go and really looking forward to it,” says Noel. Queenstown has just experienced a record winter, with spending in the region up on pre-Covid times. Destination Queenstown have reported that visitors were staying longer over the season, with length of stay up 15% and spending up 27% on 2019. Most mornings in town over winter were busy for cafes as snow-lovers headed up the mountains. The early-morning coffee hangouts have had a brief intermission since the ski season ended, but now it’s back to business with hikers getting their coffee fix before their buses head out. Kiwis and those who stayed in the country over the pandemic have been spoilt, having the trails to themselves the past few seasons, but it’s time to mix things up again and let others explore our beautiful backyard.

Wao Green Drinks: The risk with our food supply

The Frankton Library is launching it’s 1,000 Books before school on Saturday, at the Remarkables Market, Frankton. The programme goal is to begin reading together with children from a very early age reaching 1,000 books before a child hits primary school. Sounds ambitious but it’s totally do-able. The launch is planned to include: storytime, cake, face painting, colouring in, prizes, and more to celebrate the launch of the programme with the community. If you are a mum, carer, dad, grandparent, early childhood centres, teacher, midwife, doctor, in fact anyone who can and do support the lives of our littlest ones, you’re invited.

Environment and political tensions are placing increased pressure on our food system. We are a land of producers, we see ourselves living in a world of plenty, however we have one of the highest food costs in the world, and it is on the increase. Revenue from exports help fund society, however malnourishment is rife. Wao’s Green Drinks speakers will discuss local self sufficiency in our food system in our area and discuss learnings from other corners of Aotearoa.

Depopulation: challenges for the high-income world – and New Zealand Professor Paul Spoonley discusses demographic population trends, and their implications for New Zealand and the economy at the latest Catalyst Trust event. Border closures highlighted how dependent NZ is on migrant workers to keep the economy ticking. Queenstown’s tourism economy has particularly felt this. And still is. This labour crunch is not new, but it highlights a much broader and long term issue – the decline in fertility and birth rates across the developed world. Can we – our country and our district – continue to grow an economy that relies on migrant workers, permanent or temporary, low paid or high skilled? NEWS IN BRIEF

Who was Wānaka’s choice for mayor? Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) mayor Glyn Lewers was not the first - or even second - choice for Wānaka voters, newly revealed election details show. Jon Mitchell received 1,571 votes from the Wānaka-Upper Clutha ward in the recent local body elections, the highest of the five mayoral candidates. Olivia Wensley received 1,403 from the local ward. New mayor Glyn received 1,211 votes. The candidates with the fewest votes from the Wānaka-Upper Clutha ward were Daniel Shand and Neeta Shetty, with 159 and 155 votes respectively. Lewers, with 4,382 votes from across the district, was confirmed as mayor on October 13, finishing ahead of Jon Mitchell and Olivia, his closest challengers, by around 600 and 1,800 votes respectively. He received the majority of his votes in Queenstown Lakes’ other two districts: 1,700 from Arrowtown-Kawarau ward and 1,471 from the Queenstown-Wakatipu Ward, more than any other candidate in each of the two areas. - Maddy Harker, Wānaka App

Rock work at Nevis Bluff Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s spring safety programme at the Nevis Bluff, SH6, gets underway next week. People who travel between Cromwell and Queenstown will need to factor in short delays, up to 10 minutes at a time on weekdays, 8am to 5pm from Monday (7 November). These short delays will be in place for around three weeks as the Aspiring Highways team carries out routine spring abseil maintenance and inspections. During, and following this work, further stabilisation work will progress on the 13,000 tonne Yates Feature. This started in early 2022 and will continue through until at least January 2023.

Aurora on notice Power lines company Aurora Energy Limited has been warned by the Commerce Commission over an excessive power outages in 2020. The company owns and operates the poles, lines and other equipment that distributes electricity from Transpower’s national grid to over 92,000 homes, farms and businesses in Queenstown Lakes, Central Otago and Dunedin. The warning relates to the last of a series of breaches of its network quality standards relating to historic underinvestment in the replacement of assets and maintenance on the network. Aurora was previously penalised almost $5 million by the High Court for breaches of its network quality standards across 20162019. On this occasion, the Commission chose to just issue a warning, acknowledging Aurora’s plans for investment in the network. Aurora Energy boss Dr Richard Fletcher said the decision draws a final line on the company’s past performance. “I’m pleased to say we’ve met all our commitments in the 2021 and 2022 regulatory years and we will continue to meet them going forward.” Aurora is owned by Dunedin City Council.

GRAEME TODD KING OF THE COURT

One of Queenstown’s most prominent, longtime resource management lawyers, Graeme Todd arrived in Queenstown for just one year as a 22-year-old, fresh out of Otago University Law School. He’s still practising here 40-plus years later after witnessing many landmark decisions. It’s not like he never ventured further. Fresh from his hometown of Invercargill, a year’s AFS exchange in Los Angeles at 17 was something of a culture shock for Graeme. As a lawyer he was also chosen to go on a Rotary Group Study Exchange to Nigeria in 1987 where the young professionals were teamed up with Nigerian mentors. After being asked if he’d like to attend an execution, a shocked young Graeme politely declined. A keen sportsman, Graeme was a national Badminton champion at 15 and had already mastered golf with his parents’ left-handed clubs at eight during family holidays in Clyde. Graeme also holidayed with family friends in their Queenstown Camping Ground crib, until his parents built their own nearby. He worked school holidays in the Camp Store. “I still remember going to the movies in the old theatre with the roof that opened where Winnie’s is now,” recalls Graeme. There were cars in Queenstown Mall. Money wasn’t too short during uni with Graeme and his mates working at the freezing works and Tiwai Aluminium Smelter. This funded beerfuelled ski trips to the crib throughout university. He’d never envisaged working in a small town, but the invitation to work for Alan Macalister in Queenstown in 1981, starting one day after graduating from his degree, arose. “I’d worked for Iain Gallaway, a pioneer sports broadcaster, in his Dunedin law firm and we did work for Alan,”

says Graeme. He was thrown in the deep end at 22. “I arrived on the Friday and Alan said I was to appear before Judge Skelton at the Planning Tribunal (now Environment Court) on Monday. Alan was going fishing off Milford Sound and there was no radio contact.” Not surprisingly, Graeme often got a bit nervous in the office toilet before court. “The toilet had no window and Alan Graeme (right) and wife Jane with their four grandchildren said to light a match. I had a match in one hand and Aerosol can in the biggest in the late 1990s. “We thought there’d other before court once and set off a fireball in the be one licence then on the last day they issued toilet, escaping with my pants around my ankles,” two. Arts+Culture A fABBAulous night for all by Jessica Allen

Dancing Queen: A Tribute to ABBA is coming to Queenstown this November and they’ll be performing all the hits you know and love. The show is back by popular demand, touring all over New Zealand. Dust off your dancing shoes, sprinkle some glitter, and get ready to sing along at Queenstown Memorial Centre. More than just a cover band, the ABBA performance has been brought over by Showtime, who put on full-scale theatrical productions around the world. Their focus is on popular music and some of the other tribute shows they produce are Proud Tina for Tina Turner, The Greatest Love of All for Whitney Houston, and It’s a Kind of Magic for Queen. The ABBA showcase will include a live backing band, replica costumes, theatrical lighting and effects, and of course plenty of singing and dancing. This will be the first time the ABBA show has been in Aotearoa since 2020, and the diverse cast includes British Jessica Driver as Agnetha, Australian Zac Coombs as Björn, and South Africans André Behnke as Benny and Giselle Bouwer as Anni-Frid. They will be performing classics such as Mamma Mia, Waterloo, Dancing Queen, Knowing Me Knowing You, and will also include some lesserknown tunes for the diehard fans, too. Giselle says that the show is really fun to perform and suitable for all ages. “I feel like the younger generation is really starting to get involved. I don’t know if it’s because of the movies or what it is, but you get your 20-year-olds who are there – it’s all over TikTok, they’ve got all the mashups of the music on there lately. So, we’ve got the young people, we’ve got the old people, we’ve got the inbetweeners, and everyone dresses up in their ABBA costumes – the boots, the glitter, the hair and everything. From start to finish, it’s a massively fun night. Everyone knows the lyrics and the songs – they all just have a massive party while we do the show,” says Giselle. The show in Queenstown is part of a nation-wide tour and is a chance to re-live the ABBA concert experience. The cast do an amazing job at making you feel like it’s the real deal from their multiple costume changes, which they keep as original as possible, to their high energy on stage, incredible choreography, and fabulous voices – it’s a fully immersive experience. At the shows, it’s not uncommon to see several generations on a familynight out. “You can bring anyone and everyone – mum, dad, grandma, the kids, the whole family – from the little ones to the big ones,” says

Gielle. Dancing is encouraged and it’s not uncommon as the show goes on for the younger members of the audience to be surrounding the stage. The only rules at the shows are to celebrate the music of ABBA and have a great time. Dancing Queen: A Tribute to ABBA will take place on the 29th of November at Queenstown Memorial Centre. If you’d like to pick up tickets to the show or find out more information, head to dancingqueen. com.au

BE WOWED BY ORIENTAL MAGIC by Jessica Allen

Magicians from Taiwan and Hong Kong will descend on Queenstown and Arrowtown to wow, inspire and bring joy. Their performances will mix awe-inspiring magic with aspects from their local cultures. The Oriental Wonders Magic group will tour the country, finishing up in Christchurch, with the final performance raising funds for local Chinese communities. The magicians include Daxien, an illusionist from Taiwan who specialises in sleight-of-hand, Chain Yu, a humorous performer also from Taiwan, and Keanu Ho, a multiaward winning magician from Hong Kong. In addition to the three international acts, some local performers will join in too. The Queenstown show will feature Jonathan Usher, known for his sleight of hand and comedic skills. In Arrowtown, the event’s organiser, Jia Liu will perform. “There’s all types of different magic, and Asian culture is quite a particular part of magic. Stage manipulation is quite unique, and Keanu is one of the best. He is one of the champions of Hong Kong and he wanted to come here to show what Asian magic is. Chain will perform opera face changing – this is very unique, and is specific to the Sichuan province of China – it’s very rare that you’ll see this performed, even in China it’s not that often. Daxien will be doing a lot of traditional Asian-type magic. Cups and balls is his famous trick, which is from China as well – he’s doing it differently to what you’ve traditionally seen,” says Jia. Keanu will be performing mind-blowing manipulation tricks – think of wholesome magic in Harry Potter. Some of the tricks include having 1,000 cards just appear in his hand out of nowhere, having items float in midair, fire eating, or controlling the light around him.

Keanu first got into magic as a child when wandering the parks in Hong Kong and seeing performers. He grew up with ADHD and credited magic to helping him focus, and it is something he holds very close to his heart. “The magic I’m doing is quite common in Hong Kong, but here, they may have never seen it. I really want to share it with the audience and I hope they like it. Usually when I do magic, I want people to feel hope and like a miracle is happening. While I’m doing magic, I want to be friends with everyone,” says Keanu. Keanu just wants to spread joy – he does a lot of charity work in Hong Kong with children and instigated this magic tour to help spread happiness. He felt now was the right time as he has seen people around him losing hope since the Covid pandemic. “One day I realised that magic can heal people, we can help people on the outside but we can help people on the inside because I believe that the feeling of a miracle can give hope to everyone,” says Keanu. The Oriental Wonders Magic Tour will be in Arrowtown in Friday 11 November and in Queenstown on Sunday the 13th. You can find out more information and get tickets at buytickets.at/ magicmomentsnz

Whiti Hereaka at Queenstown Writer’s Festival by Jessica Allen

Writer and playwrite, Whiti Hereaka, will be part of two events at this year’s Queenstown Writer’s Festival. She is a powerful Māori voice in Aotearoa literature and will be hosting a workshop on writing your first play in addition to taking part in a discussion with Louise Wright about Kurangaituku, Whiti’s fourth novel.

by Jessica Allen

Dunedin-based Paddy Richardson is the author of eight novels as well as two collections of short stories, and will be heading to Tāhuna for the Queenstown Writer’s Festival. She is thrilled to be coming back to the festival, which she describes as friendly, interesting and varied.

Whiti released her first book, The Graphologist’s Apprentice, in 2010 and was shortlisted for Best First Book in the Commonwealth Writers Prize in 2011. Since then, Whiti has been nominated for, and has won, a number of prizes. She’s also held two residencies at the Michael King Writers Centre. Her latest book was released in December last year and Whiti has been working on it for the past ten years. “The book is a retelling of the legend of Hatupatu and the bird woman, but from her point of view – reclaiming and retelling her story,” says Whiti. Hatupatu was the youngest of four sons and became chief of the Te Arawa iwi. The story traditionally tells of his escape from Kurangaituku, the bird woman, by hiding inside a rock and leading her into a boiling mud pool. “Some of the motivations to write the story came from way back when I was a kid and wanting to know her story rather than Hatupatu’s. I grew up in Taupō and Hatupatu’s rock is on State Highway 1 on the way to Rotorua. I’ve got family in Rotorua, so we’d always drive through to go visit them and visit the rock and talk about it. I guess it was always somewhere in the back of my head.” This book differs from Whiti’s past works. The first major difference is the way in which you can read the book – it can be read from the front or back, with both sides meeting in the middle – there’s no recommended order to read it. One side is set in this realm and the other is set in the underworld. The flipping of the book is representative of Kurangaituku’s world getting flipped. “I wanted the reader to experience what Kurangaituku was experiencing at that time – flipping the book helps with that. Also, I wanted to tell a story in a way that was closer to how traditional oral storytelling, how pūrākau, would have been told pre-colonial times. A storyteller wouldn’t necessarily tell you a story in order.” The in conversation with Louise Wright event will explore Whiti’s latest book, the process of getting it out into the world, and how it differs from her other writing. Whiti will explore the unique structure of the book and after her talk there will be opportunity for questions and to purchase Kurangaituku. Tickets include a drink and nibbles, and Whiti says people can expect some jokes, too. In addition to her talk Whiti will also be hosting a playwriting workshop, which she is thrilled

about. While it’s been some time since her last play, she’s had many produced for the stage and in 2012 she won the Bruce Mason Playwriting Award – an annual award that recognises the work of an outstanding and emerging NZ playwrite. “For the workshop, I’m quite excited because it’s been a while since I’ve actually written plays. I wrote a couple a little over two years ago now, and I wrote one at the beginning of last year. I started off as a playwrite and before that, in high school, I was a drama geek, so I had plans to be an actor. I fell in love with writing instead – came to Wellington to pursue being a playwrite and then got romanced into writing novels. That’s sort of taken over my writing life at the moment – it’s always nice to go back. “The workshop will be looking at the first steps to writing a play. It’s for people who maybe have toyed with the idea of writing a play, or people who have written one or two plays and just want some extra skills. It’s a fairly short workshop, so I want to try and jam as much in as possible. I think to get the most out of that time we’ll mainly be looking at characterisation, which is the foundation of playwriting and any writing – I think it always springs from character first. Then we’ll be looking at how to put together the scenes – looking at the structure of scenes and how they work, and hopefully that will give participants of the workshop some tools so they can go off and start working on the masterpieces,” says Whiti. The Wellington-based writer will travel down to Queenstown for the festival and will be a part of two events. Whiti Hereaka in conversation with Louise Wright will take place on Friday 11 November, and her writing your first play workshop will take place on Saturday November 12 – both events are at Te Atamira. You can purchase tickets and find more info on the Queenstown Writer’s Festival programme at qtwritersfestival.nz

Paddy has multiple awards under her belt including three Creative New Zealand Awards, the Beatson Fellowship, and the James Wallace Arts Trust Residency. She also received the Randell Cottage Writer in Residence in 2019, which allowed her to live in Wellington and focus her energy on researching for her novel Through the Lonesome Dark. The story is set in Blackball on the West Coast, preWorld War I, and features a character named Otto, who is incarcerated on Somes Island, near Wellington, due to his German heritage. Paddy has recently released a sequel to this novel, By the Green of the Spring, which looks more into his situation on Somes Island, and the situation of all those men that were put there. “These were mainly ordinary everyday New Zealand citizens, who happened to have a German heritage. They were incarcerated there not just for the duration of the war, but even longer because the New Zealand government wouldn’t let them go until the British prisoners in the same situation were let go of in Germany. They were there for quite a number of years and were treated very brutally. “My story is fictional, but I based it on the reality and the research I did while I was there when I was given the Randell Cottage Writer’s Residency. I was able to do a lot of research at the Alexander Turnbull Library, and I also went over to the island and visited quite a lot. It was a very interesting story and something that I hadn’t actually realised,” says Paddy. Paddy started writing novels in her late thirties, prior to this she had mainly wrote poetry and short stories. Her writing varies with some crime/thriller novels in her collection, too. Now in her early 70s, Paddy is writing fulltime and will take part in a conversation with Sue Luus at this year’s Queenstown Writer’s Festival, in

Poetry jam at Queenstown Writer’s Festival by Jessica Allen

Claudia Jardine, Liz Breslin and Ray Shipley will be hosting a Poetry Jam at this year’s Queenstown Writer’s Festival. It will take place on the final night of the festival and includes an open mic portion – they’re encouraging anyone to bring a poem and get involved, with a koha entry and sign ups on the night. Each of the artists will read for approximately ten minutes before opening up the floor to anyone who would like to participate. The night has been modelled off an event that Ray regularly runs up in Christchurch, which has proved really popular. Each of the featured poets has a very different style, and they’re keen to see what Tāhuna has to offer. “We called the evening poetry jam because we wanted it to be welcoming. We have an openmic section because we wanted people to know that they can get involved with no experience required. You can come on the night, put your name on the list, and then boom, you’re in the open-mic section. We wanted to show that it’s a jam – it’s a smashing series of various voices – cohesion is not really the aim, that’s not really what poetry is about in a community setting. You want to get up and read, and you don’t have to overthink about how you might relate to the other poets,” says Claudia.

addition to hosting a novel-writing workshop on the Thursday. “When I talk to Sue, I think she’ll be focusing on mainly this novel, By the Green of the Spring – but I guess that’s all really up to her. I’ll probably be talking about my research, what I found out, how I structured the novel and things like that. “I’m doing a novel writing workshop on Thursday the 10th and it runs over two hours. For the first hour I’m going to try and talk about how I’ve actually written my own novels, the sort of research that I’ve done, how I put together a plot, and how I try to get to know my characters and develop them. Where the ideas come from, too, because that’s always an important one – how you suddenly find an idea, how it stays with you, and how it turns into a novel. Also, the fact that writing a novel is a long-term and hard work thing. For the second hour I’m hoping people will have some questions and that we can have a bit of a workshop-type discussion – that’s what I’m planning,” says Paddy.

translate in her performances. She also has a collection coming out next year that includes a lot of love poems, and her current slam material is a bit more pointed and political. If you’ve been interested in poetry for a while but aren’t too sure where to start, Claudia says that it’s a personal experience and anything can feel like a poem. “I would really just urge people to think about what it is they’re passionate about and see if they can write about those topics. Then, consider how it would feel to read that poem aloud to a room of people – we’re not all going to be comfortable sharing everything. Poetry is a really great way to explore your vision of the world and what you get snagged on – what things you notice or hear, or overhear, which is a great place to find material for poems. I feel like at a poetry jam you’re going to find all sorts of topics on the table,” says Claudia. The poetry jam will take place on the last night of the festival, Sunday 13 November. Everyone is welcome, and more info on the event can be found at qtwritersfestival.nz

Creating your own Gardening ‘Microclimate’ I love living here in these mountains and the adventures of trying to grow food that comes with that. It has been another topsy spring with some warm and nearly 20 degree days along with a couple of decent snow events. Winters, however are definitely trending towards being warmer even though this year was a classic winter. It felt very cold in June and July and then the subtropical August and September came along. That said, I think we’re still a long way from Avocado’s and citrus orchards. The extremes of weather lead me to the topic of creating your own gardening ‘Microclimate’. It’s a word I rattle on about all the time and rightly so, when we’ve had barmy winters days followed by harsh cold snaps with snow on the ground.

So depending on the depth of your pocket, and possibly whether you’re renting or own a property or you have an allotment here’s 9 ways you can up spec your own microclimate to even out the highs and lows of the coming growing season.

1. Frost Cloth. With the use of homemade or store bought hoops it’s easy to cover a bed with frost cloth. Having a cloth changes the temperatures under the cloth by lifting it anywhere from 2 to 6 degrees warmer than the surrounding temperature. I also use frost cloth during the summer months to grow tender leafy greens, asian greens and some brassicas like broccoli. a) Build a frame and cover it with windbreak. b) Using up materials you’ve begged and borrowed, build a more permanent boxy structure. This will have the same effect as the frost cloth. It also has the added bonus of keeping white butterflies at bay in the summer months. 2. Cold Frames. Somewhere in the New Zealand gardening psyche we forgot all about semi permanent cold frames. Think box bed with a window on top that can be opened up during the heat of the day. Our gardening ancestors have been using these successfully for hundreds of years. A great way to get a head start on snowy spring mornings. 3. Raised your garden beds. The higher you come up, the further Jack frost has to climb to get to your veggies. The soil in raised beds also warms up quicker and the temperature of the soil is a key factor in seed germination. Raised beds in combination with the hoops, frost cloth and you will start seeing differences. 4. Black plastic. Old silage plastic or recycled builders’ black plastic can be used to heat up the soil. Push any mulch to the side, cover the bed with the black plastic and leave for a couple of weeks before removing and sowing seed directly.

5. Recycled glass house. There’s a lot of windows sitting around propped up against someone’s wall for a one day- someday project. A great project for you would be to build yourself a glasshouse for next to nothing. You might even score a load of double glazed windows. Remember, you don’t need any glass on the south side, this could be a thermal mass of bricks or concrete of something similar to soak up the heat during the day and let it all out at night keeping your veggies a little toastier. 6. Tunnel house or glass house. These start to cost a few dollars but will be one of the best investments you make for your garden. Always go a little bigger and wider than you think you need. This space becomes one of your most productive. Great for growing tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers, winter greens, early strawberries and so on. Thermal mass placed on the south side of a garden really makes a huge difference with random frosts that come out of nowhere during the season. This could be a gabion rock filled wall, or black/blue barrels of water, even a fence or a wall of a house. Plants that need extra heat like corn and pumpkins are ideal in these spaces. The western side of a tunnel house or glass house is perfect for a veggie bed. The bed receives reflective and radiant heat from the structure. It will be one of the last places you get a frost outside, great for those longer season frost tender growing plants. Lastly there is nothing quite like observation. Get outside on those cold frosty mornings, and see where is it warmer and where is it colder in your growing zone??
