Has the worm finally turned?

Is it possible the end of pain for Queenstown businesses is near? Stuart Nash seems to think so, promising boom times ahead this summer. However, in a rare understanding of the small business portfolio he is Minister for, goes on to acknowledge the stresses people running small businesses in the Queenstown Lakes continue to be under.

Without playing the victim card, because bottom line is, my life my choice to be in business and for everyone, the last two and a half years have been an absolute mind bender. My brain has been bent, yet now is the time when clarity of mind is mission critical. Boom time awaits according to Minister Nash.

Cynicism of every word uttered from Minister Nash aside, I too get the feeling the worm has turned ever so slightly in our favour, for the first time in a long time. The last two hurdles to overcome do not seem quite as high. The freeing up of the road cone and security fence city we call home is starting to happen, and the labour market squeeze is starting to throw up options, which, although not the magic bullet, is better than no option at all.

The newly elected QLDC Council “promised” us during the election campaign to be more sympathetic to community concerns and listen. Number one for many in business is the basic attempts to get our customers from A (one side of the road) to B (the side of the road where your business is). So, it is welcome news that DFS opened last week bringing an end of a 3-year construction project in the middle of town. The Bee Card being accepted on the ferry signals more integrated public transport for visitors and workers. Duke Street reopened this week to traffic, and we are told the CBD street works will be done by Christmas. What street works exactly and who’s telling us they will be “done by Christmas” I will not concern myself with right now. Because I have bigger fish to fry, employing the people to help my business “boom” and prove Minister Nash right for the first time in his life.

There are all sorts of reasons why our district ended up short staffed by about 30%. Queenstown has always been a difficult place to establish yourselves as a family, therefore we rely more than most on younger more relocatable individuals. They left as quick as they came the last few years. But slowly they trickle back. By Christmas the district will only be 20% short of workers. That may not allow us to boom Stuart Nash style but might allow a welcome wee pop. I’ll take that pop thank you very much.

T Galleria opens bringing a touch of luxury retail to downtown Queenstown. Australian women fashion designer Karen Gee was on hand at Friday’s opening. See story on page 4 and social photos on page 18/19 for more.

T Galleria brings luxury to Queenstown

It’s almost unrecognisable and very posh.

After more than two years of construction, two floors of O’Connells Mall finally reopened over the weekend, all leased to department store T Galleria.

The Queenstown landmark has been extensively renovated by its owners Skyline Enterprises Ltd, at a cost of around $26 million. And the change on the inside is just as dramatic as the outside.

T Galleria is spread across 1,800 square metres of O’Connells, in an openplan, wander-through format, offering products from 120 high-end brands - think Stella McCartney, Kenzo, Gucci Beauty, TAG Heuer and Breitling.

T Galleria itself is a brand owned by DFS, the Hong Kong-based worldleading luxury travel retailer with duty-free stores in 12 major airports and 23 downtown stores.

But, while DFS is obviously drawn by the millions of tourists visiting Queenstown each year, store manager Mario Sandulescu says T Galleria aims to appeal to locals as well.

“We’re open and accessible to everyone,” he tells Lakes Weekly Bulletin. “We’ve put a lot of effort into curating our range of brands and products, from entry level through to unique pieces, such as a collectible watch.”

It operates like a normal department store, although international travellers can purchase duty-free. Along with fashion, accessories, beauty products and watches, the store also sells jewellery, wine, food and gifts.

“We listened to Queenstown’s desire for quality beauty products. With the opening of T Galleria, finally Queenstown has received what it deserves,” Sandulescu says.

“We are opening with a commitment and focus on the local Queenstown community first, and are actively looking for collaborations and partnerships to elevate local artists, producers and designers, to support the creative spirit that Queenstown embodies.”

Local artist Jessica Winchcombe created a custom abstract artwork in store on Saturday’s opening, while an exclusive opening event on Friday night featured as fashion show from Australian designer Karen Gee, who has dressed Meghan Markle.

Thousands of Queenstowners popped in for a look over the weekend and many will have pictured in their minds what was there before, an entertaining game - remember Yaks n Yetis, the watch repair shop, and all the ad-hoc collection of local businesses?

But that’s all in the past now. The new fit out mixes high-end with a little bit funky, with red escalators, quality wood and stone finishes and a lift with exposed workings. The main shape remains, with the shopping areas clustered around a central atrium, looking down to the food court level.

Skyline plans to open a new food court ‘EatSpace’ in the coming months, with eight tenancies around a central bar, which can be seen from the T Galleria levels of the building. The upper floors, which have also been completely refurbished, remain offices, for Skyline, DFS and others.

T Galleria Queenstown is the first store in DFS’ new ‘Resort Galleria’ concept, which is being introduced to its global store portfolio. There’s also one planned for Brisbane, Australia. The retailer has operated T Galleria by DFS, Auckland in the iconic Custom House heritage building since 1997 and operates several boutiques in Auckland Airport.

The Queenstown store is among a host of luxury retailers moving to Queenstown premises, following on from Louis Vuitton on Marine Parade. Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, RM Williams and other high-end international brands are also snapping up premises downtown.

Inclusionary Housing Plan Change

Council has opened formal consultation on a proposal to introduce Inclusionary Housing rules into the District Plan to help more families access affordable housing in the district. Information on the change came in your rates notices and emails. If you receive your rates invoice via email then please remember to check your junk folders – this isn’t junk!

The proposal requires most new residential subdivisions and developments to pay an ‘affordable housing financial contribution’. The money generated would be collected by Council and provided to the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust, providing an ongoing funding stream to deliver affordable housing.

Housing is one of the biggest challenges the community faces. It’s also at the heart of creating secure, connected and caring communities, creating jobs and helping develop a more diverse economy.

This proposal is important because it will support access to affordable housing for low-moderate income earners in the region. More affordable housing allows families to stay within the district, rather than living further afield and commuting long distances to work or moving out the district altogether. It ultimately will also help attract and retain skilled workers.

Since 2003, council has used inclusionary housing as a way of securing affordable housing contributions from developers on a case-by-case basis. The proposed changes will formalise that requirement providing more certainty that the construction of affordable housing can continue. Check out the Inclusionary Housing Plan Change and make a submission at www.qldc.govt.nz/inclusionary-housing

Dark web drugs bust in Queenstown

Queenstown Police made a dozen arrests over one of the Southern district’s largest online operations for the sale and distribution of controlled Class A, B and C drugs.

Over the course of two days last week, nine search warrants were executed in the Queenstown, Wānaka and Roxburgh areas. Officers seized MDMA, cocaine, cannabis and LSD, as well as approximately $10,000 in cash from the addresses.

Detective Senior Sergeant Malcolm Inglis says most of the drugs had been bought on dark web by the alleged dealers and imported into New Zealand.

“Police were made aware of drug dealing on the internet earlier this year,” Inglis says. “It prompted a four-month-long investigation into the illegal network, as Police began targeting certain individuals.

“Investigations found the alleged offenders used social media platforms like Facebook to sell these illegal substances.”

Three of the 10 arrested are foreign nationals from France and Chile. Police have since seized their passports, and they face deportation. One patched Mongrel Mob gang member was also arrested. At one property, police discovered the offender growing cannabis beneath their house.

“Police are aware that for the most part, these drugs have been sourced from the dark web and imported into New Zealand. The offenders bringing them into the country have been motivated by money.

“These drugs have had a devastating effect on our communities. They have posed a huge threat to public safety, and Police are aware of recent medical events as a result of the consumption of these drugs in the Queenstown bar scene.

“Police have a zero-tolerance approach to any activity, substance or person that threatens public safety. Unfortunately, Queenstown has the highest rate of consumption of MDMA in the country.

“It is hoped this week’s successful arrests will help in lowering that statistic. “The apprehension of these 12 individuals this week represents excellent policing to protect the public. Police will continue to target more people like these.”

The alleged offenders are aged between 19 and 42 and face a range of separate charges, from importing Class A substances and supplying them to possession of Class C.

The majority were in court last week, with some due to appear over the coming days.

Inglis says Police are committed to helping protect the community from drug harm and so continue to monitor the online sphere for illegal activity.

“Individuals involved in this offending profit from the destruction and social harm that drugs cause, with no regard for those they affect.”

Anyone affected by drug addiction can seek help through the Alcohol and Drug Helpline on 0800 787 797, or free text 8681.

Police still seeking info over Hong Kong man

Queenstown Police want the public’s help to find items belonging to Wai Ming Lai who died in Arrowtown last Saturday. Mr Lai, 51, who was visiting from Hong Kong, was found by walkers on the Sawpit Gully hiking trail. He had collapsed and was struggling to breathe. They administered CPR, but he died at the scene. Police have located his next of kin and are now working to establish his last movements, including where he may have been staying. “Additionally, we are hoping to locate his luggage, consisting of a large silver hard-shell suitcase (pictured),” a police spokesperson said. “It is thought this will likely be at his place of accommodation.” Mr Lai arrived on a flight from Hobart, Australia, on 27 July, and was due to leave NZ on October 18. But he didn’t get on the flight and instead travelled to Queenstown. Police believe he may have paid for accommodation in cash. The case has been passed to the coroner, who will establish a cause of death. Anyone with information should call police on 105 quoting file 221022/7761.

District’s population almost 50,000

Queenstown Lakes district resident population is estimated at 49,500 as of June 2022, according to population estimates released by Stats NZ last week. The population has grown 16.5% over the past four years, up from 42,500 in 2018, to record a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.9%. The latest figures show the district’s population has been increasing at more than 2,000 people each year over the past 10 years, however this slowed in 2020 and 2021 due to a decline in international migration. The data also shows we are aging, with the average age across the district 35.1 years compared to 33.8 years in 2018. The proportion of the population over the age of 40 is 40.6%, an increase from 39.3% in 2018. Forecast population data from Stats NZ projected the district’s population to grow to 57,900 by 2033 and 64,800 by 2043 which is an annual growth rate of approximately 1.4 percent, well below the current rate. Otago’s population is now estimated at 246,000 growing at 0.92 percent annually, and the NZ population is estimated at 5.12m growing 0.9 percent each year. - Wānaka App

Summer off to a strong start

New Zealand’s tourism sector continues its recovery, with overseas visitor arrivals and card spend tracking towards pre-pandemic levels, Tourism Minister Stuart Nash says. Some 145,250 overseas visitors arrived in the four weeks to 26 October. And international card spend was at 88% of pre-Covid levels in the four weeks to 25 September. Around 19% of total bed nights booked for 2022/23 are from international visitors. The return of cruise ships is also expected to create an economic boost of up to $51 million. Importantly for Queenstown, more than 10,000 Working Holiday Visa holders have now arrived in NZ, providing more staff. “It’s been a tough time for our tourism sector throughout the pandemic, but I’ve said repeatedly that the commitment and dedication of the incredible people in the sector means we will come out of these past two years stronger and ready to embrace a forward thinking, sustainable tourism sector,” Nash said.

Regenerative tourism plan being revised

Queenstown’s plan to make tourism beyond sustainable is being redrafted after feedback.

‘Tourism for a Better Future’ was shared with the public in August, after years of work by Destination Queenstown, Lake Wānaka Tourism and Queenstown Lakes District Council.

The strategy is designed to move the region toward regenerative tourism by 2030.

More than 1600 visits have been made to the website hosting the strategy since it was launched. It has been downloaded over 600 times and there were 33 pieces of detailed feedback received from both individuals and organisations.

“The feedback was wide-ranging, across a variety of themes, with the steering group reviewing all the feedback thoroughly and considering the range of suggestions raised,” a joint media statement from the three organisations reads.

“International destination management experts, Destination Think, are partnering with the steering group to develop and enhance the strategy further, based on the feedback received.”

Destination Think will visit Queenstown Lakes in November to meet with community, stakeholders and industry to provide an update on the revised strategy and next steps with implementation.

Community meetings will be held in Queenstown (16 November), Wānaka (17 November) and Glenorchy (18 November).

‘Tourism for a Better Future’, the destination management strategy for the Queenstown Lakes, is an output of the Grow Well | Whaiora Spatial Plan, a formal partnership between QLDC, Kāi Tahu and the Crown

It was developed with input from communities across the district, gathered

over the last year. The strategy will be implemented as a partnership between Destination Queenstown (DQ), Lake Wānaka Tourism (LWT), Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC), Kāi Tahu and the Department of Conservation.

“The strategy is centred around tourism supporting thriving communities in the Queenstown Lakes; not just economically but also socially, culturally and environmentally.”

NASA Team Begins Study of UFOs

A team of NASA researchers has just begun a formal investigation into UFOs, now referred to as unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs). Last week, the agency announced the 16 team members leading a nine month study. They will report their findings in mid-2023.

The effort is meant to “lay the groundwork for future study on the nature of UAPs for NASA and other organizations,” according to the statement. “The team will identify how data gathered by civilian government entities, commercial data, and data from other sources can potentially be analyzed to shed light on UAPs.”

The supernatural-sounding study, is really meant to bring a scientific perspective to the subject and document unidentified objects in the sky. It will reportedly cost less than $100,000 and be independent from the Pentagon’s efforts to study UAPs.

Taylor Swift’s “Midnights” hauls in 1 million album sales

Taylor Swift’s “Midnights” has become the first album to register a million units in a week in five years. The last album to do it? Taylor Swift’s “Reputation,” all the way back in 2017.

Moreover, “Midnights” accomplished the feat in just its first three days on the market. Luminate tells Variety that the new record checked in with 1.2 million album-equivalent units over the Oct. 21-23 weekend.

There’s an “only in 2022, kids” element to this, too: nearly half the total units accumulated during those first three days came in… vinyl sales. Luminate reports that nearly 500,000 copies were sold in the LP format over the weekend. That’s more than half of the album’s actual sales total during that period, which amounted to 955,000 full copies sold in all formats, digital and CD included.

Ripe Wine and Food Festival returns

The Central Otago Wine and Food showcase returns to Lake Wānaka on Saturday March 18, 2023.

Covid forced the 2022 event to be postponed after a sold out first year, and locals and visitors will experience the wide range of Central Otago Wine and Food producers on show at Glendhu Station, in Glendu Bay located a 10 minute drive from Wānaka township.

Some of NZ’s premium wineries will be pouring wines including Akarua, Amisfield, Cloudy Bay, Gibbston Valley, Misha’s Vineyard, Maude Wines, Valli and more.

There will be live music to keep the crowd going and a cooking demonstration by Christchurch based best selling authors, Two Raw Sisters.

Buses will be running from Wānaka town centre. Wine Tastings, Live Music, Demonstrations, Great food, Ripe - The Wānaka Wine & Food Festival has all the ingredients for a memorable day out next Otago Anniversary Weekend.

District Plan changes at Northlake and Coneburn open for Public Submissions

QLDC is inviting submissions on proposed changes to the District Plan at Northlake near Wānaka and Coneburn industrial area off State Highway 6 near Jacks Point.

The Coneburn Industrial Zone Notification proposes three variations to the District Plan related to building coverage and the prohibition of visitor and homestay accommodation.

“If adopted, these variations will better align future activity in this area with the overall strategic intent of the District Plan,” QLDC General Manager Planning and Development Tony Avery said.

The Northlake Special Zone Private Plan Change 54 was requested by developers Northlake Investments Ltd (NIL) earlier this year.

It proposes removing part of a building restriction area to provide firstly a roading and infrastructure corridor from the Northlake Special Zone to the adjacent site known as Sticky Forest, and secondly land for residential development which could result in up to 63 net additional dwellings.

“The main difference between a private plan change like this one and a council-led private plan change is that its contents are set by the requestor rather than Council” Avery said.

“I would clarify that NIL’s request would have no impact on Sticky Forest which is subject to a separate ongoing rezoning appeal,” he said.

Both proposed plan changes have submissions closing at 5.00pm on Thursday 24 November.

New Zealand’s Gross Greenhouse Gas Emissions 78.8 Million Tonnes In 2020

New Zealand’s gross greenhouse gas emissions were 78.8 million tonnes of CO2-e in the year ended December 2020, 20.8 percent higher than in 1990, Stats NZ said.

The indicator New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions measures greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which have resulted from production activity in New Zealand territory from 1990 to 2020. Emissions from the different greenhouse gases are shown in carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e) units. Changes in emissions in relation to three points in time are shown: the start of the timeseries (1990), a 2005 reference period, and the previous year’s emissions (2019).

Climate change is primarily caused by the accumulation of GHG emissions in the atmosphere due to human activities. In 2020, New Zealand’s gross GHG emissions were made up of carbon dioxide (43.7 percent), methane (43.5 percent), nitrous oxide (10.7 percent), and fluorinated gases (2.0 percent).

“Gross emissions in 2020 were 3.5 percent lower than in 2019, primarily due to decreased road transport emissions,” environmental and agricultural statistics senior manager Michele Lloyd said.

That’s a lot of new people and traffic. But I suppose, at the end of the day, the solution will be a new rule and a new sign... which will read: “Ladies Mile Per Hour”

PAUL WILSON

A GOOD KIWI BLOKE

As a youngster growing up in Frankton during the 1960s, Paul Wilson enjoyed the life of Riley – summers were hot and winters were big, skating on ice, fishing, biking, and roaming the hillsides.

His parents Dick and Noeleen Wilson owned the first Frankton service station and general store during the 1950s. His dad then built a new service station where the Mobil Station is now. “Our house was right beside that, where McDonald’s Restaurant is now. You could look through and see everyone’s clothes lines made from Number 8 wire.”

“Our playground was down at the river or lake, eeling, fishing or swimming, skiing and skating in winter,” he says.

Dick and Noeleen owned the Frankton Beach ice cream stand, often manned by their kids. “Frankton Beach would be absolutely packed with people in summer.”

Freshly-laid eggs and manure for Dick’s garden were collected from the chicken farm where Kawarau Place is now.

Every Friday Paul’s mum sent the family to eat out at Lakes Restaurant at the top of the Mall.

As a kid Paul watched the spectacular White Star Hotel fire in central Queenstown as it burnt to the ground on New Year’s Day, 1970.

“If you were smart enough as a teenager you knew how to get into Buckham’s Brewery (Novotel Gardens site now) and try to get a few beers or drinks.”

Not surprisingly, he got “a few boots up the backside” from Queenstown’s notorious Police Sergeant Warwick Maloney when he got out of line.

Fourth out of seven children, Paul had two fantastic role models as a kid. My godmother, Mary Aitken, lived up the Rees Valley and ran Paradise House back when tourists came and went on the Earnslaw.” Paul would travel up on the Earnslaw and spend his summer holidays there. “I have great memories of early days on the Earnslaw. Glenorchy is still my special place.” A widow with six kids, Mary taught Paul “the Glenorchy way of life”. “I’d sit up and listen to her stories.”

“My other mentor was my 1970s school teacher, Willie Solomon, who’d take us boys up to the Branches Station and Jardine’s woolshed for the weekend,” says Paul. “He’d take us eeling and camping as our parents were all busy at the time.”

“Willie took me to his home patch in the Far North on the Railway bus and train when I was nine or 10 and I have him to thank for immersing me in Maori culture.” Willie is still a close friend 50 years on and visits the Wilson family’s Kiwi Birdlife Park to help plant native trees. “That early Maori teaching is now reflected in the park’s programmes,” says Paul.

In the 1980s Paul got invited to train as a chef at Queenstown Travelodge.

“It was the place to eat then.” A keen hunter, Paul clicked with the German chefs who loved to hunt deer, venison, hare, and to fish.

He went on to have a successful chef career around Australia, opening a restaurant in the Kakadu National Park, near Darwin, with its large wildlife sanctuary and strong Aboriginal focus.

Then Dick had an idea. “People would come into the garage and ask Dad where they could see kiwi. There was an old refuge dump site in town with a spring so Dad applied to use it for a Kiwi Birdlife Park in the mid-1980s,” says Paul, who quit his successful chef career and headed home to help. Paul, along with his wife Sandra, has run the park for 36 years breeding many threatened New Zealand native birds, including kiwi, with great success at what is now internationally renowned as one of New Zealand’s most renowned bird sanctuaries. The park, has won multiple awards within the zoo and tourism industries and is also renowned for its involvement in breeding programmes with DOC, originally the Wildlife Service. These days son Richard and daughter Gemma are at the helm and he’s enjoying stepping back to focus on his regenerative farming projects in the Glenorchy area. Paul’s passionate about conservation and reckons if we don’t correct our soils climate change will only continue to reach catastrophic levels. “We managed to keep the whole Kiwi Birdlife Park team employed through Covid with regenerative farming projects, planting the likes of sunflowers, clover and linseed to enrich the soils and using them for stock feed.”

The Wilson family’s other passion is supporting young people with mental health challenges, after the tragic loss of Paul and Sandra’s eldest daughter at 19. The family now donates thousands of dollars a year through Wakatipu High School, awarding two scholarships, including the Sophie Wilson Award, to a student of the school’s choosing facing mental health issues. That money helps fund University. The family also funds counselling or support for another student, nominated by the school, who is suffering mental health issues. “It’s wonderful to see how this issue is being brought out in the open now,” says Paul.

He now owns a property in the Rees Valley and is settled there, where everybody knows each other and they still have time to stop and chat.

“Queenstown will never lose its spectacular charm. People love it,” he says. “But it’s becoming a city and the development and upgrades are necessary. You once went to Eichardt’s and The Mountaineer for a beer and did your business there, talking over a jug, but we need a large council team to run the place now with these big numbers. The upgrades will all be worthwhile in the end.”

END OF Afolk festival era

Cardrona Folk Festival’s final event took place over the Labour Weekend. Bringing in folk musicians from all around Aotearoa, this year marked the 46th festival for Kay and Martin Curtis, the event’s organisers. It took place in the same spot it always has, at the Cardrona Hall and picturesque surrounding reserve.

For 46 years the annual event has been organised by Kay and Martin. They moved to Cardrona after living in Australia where they coordinated folk festivals in the Northern Territory. The end of the Cardrona festival comes as the couple move out of the now busy Cardrona area to a quieter space that doesn’t have the capability to host 70+ guests each year. The folk fest started after Martin finished working in Dunedin.

“It all started 46 years ago when we first moved to Cardrona. I’d been working temporarily in Dunedin, just as the Edinburgh Folk Club started up down there, and the older folk musicians and fans in Dunedin decided once we’d moved to Cardrona that they’d come up for a weekend trip on a bus and entertain the kids, and have a bit of music around the fire. It just grew from there, really.

“When we were living in the Northern Territory I started with a small festival there – it was just the folk clubs, and we were in Tennant Creek, which is 325 miles north of Alice Springs. The Alice Springs folkies came up and the Darwin folkies came down – they travelled 670 miles or so. Mount Isa in Queensland folkies also came over – we just had a weekend together, and that’s what you do with folk music, it’s a sharing type of music. It’s all very small,” says Martin.

Martin is well-known in the folk scene, growing up in Great Britain he has been based in the Cardrona Valley for many years and a lot of his songs reference the Wanaka district. In addition

to running the Cardrona Folk Festival, Martin also organises tours of New Zealand for many top folk musicians.

The final event hosted Eric Bogle – the man behind “The Band Played Waltzing Matilda”, Graham Wardrop – Aotearoa’s finest fingerstyle guitarist, and Barrie McDonald – a Christchurch musician who has been a regular over the years and was at the first festival in 1977. This year was a challenge as Kay and Martin ran the event out of a batch in Wanaka – usually they’d host the musicians at their house. The hiring of accommodation made the running costs much more than past events. Most of the folk festivals in New Zealand take part

over long weekends as people generally travel from all around the country to attend.

“In 1979, I think it was, the Blenheim Folk Club Festival stopped and I grabbed Labour Weekend quickly while I could, so we’ve had it ever since. The next one on the calendar is Whare Flat near Dunedin, which is over New Year. That’s been going the same length of time that we have.”

The final Cardrona Folk Festival marked the end of an era for Martin and Kay. “It was quite an emotional weekend, but life moves on. It had to stop at some stage – I couldn’t run it living in Alexandra, which is where we’re going to. Even if I found a site to run a festival down there, I don’t think I’d do another one – it’s a lot of hard work,” says Martin.

With the closing of this chapter, Martin says he and Kay will now have time to attend more folk festivals throughout Aotearoa, and he’s sure Labour Weekend will eventually be snapped up by another folk festival.

Landmark building to anchor Mt Cardrona Station

architects Baxter Design on the project.

“We’re delighted to launch our vision for The Homestead as a focal point for owners where they can connect with neighbours, bring their guests, and to enjoy the scenery,” says Chris Morton.

“It promises to be a destination in its own right with resort-like facilities available all year round.

The overall development has been 15 years in the making and owners will have the right to roam over 30km of walking and mountain biking trails on station land designed by experienced local trail builder Tom Hey.

Four residential neighbourhoods are currently on the market in the development, with land-only sites and concept house-and-landscape designs available.

More than 350ha of the land has been set aside as open spaces, with every design choice considering the connection to the environment and people.

The Homestead is a series of four long, low buildings which seamlessly connect. Like many utilitarian rural buildings that weather the passage of time, The Homestead will be a feature hardy raw materials, including Corten steel, corrugated iron, unfinished timber, local stone and glass.

“You won’t find paint or plasterboard in this building,” says Luke Leuschke of prominent architectural firm Leuschke Group Architects. “The challenge was to capture the essence of yesterday with the needs of today and into the future.

“Thermal performance, keeping the building cool in summer yet warm in winter, was high on our list of design priorities, incorporating best practice sustainability measures”.

Construction on Stage One of The Homestead will begin in late summer 2023, housing the members Club Room, gym and reception, while the restaurant will be part of Stage Two and the pool will be finished in Stage Three.

Wānaka’s CDL Building is the building partner.

From Afghanistan to Aotearoa – Abbas Nazari shares his journey

Abbas Nazari, a former Afghan refugee who fled the Taliban in 2001, will do a small tour of Queenstown and Wanaka in early November to tell his story and talk about his book, After the Tampa. The book is an autobiographical memoir about Abbas’ family’s journey from Afghanistan to New Zealand and was written during the 2020 lockdown. Abbas and his family arrived in Aotearoa when he was eight years old. Their travel here was treacherous – they were a few of more than 400 asylum seekers rescued by a Norwegian container ship by the name of the MV Tampa. The family’s ship was found in the Indian Ocean enroute to Australia. His family was denied asylum and held offshore for weeks –after this they were eventually resettled in New Zealand.

“There was no real plan. The goal was just to get out of Afghanistan because it wasn’t safe for us. Gradually, over time, after living in a refugee camp in Pakistan we realised that the only place that might give us a better life would be Australia, and seeking asylum there. It was actually on our attempt to seek asylum in Australia that the Tampa affair happened, and we ended up in New Zealand. The New Zealand government chose to resettle us and give us a chance at a new life.

“I’ve been back twice in 2012 and 2017 – both times were incredibly eye-opening experiences for me. I write about them in the book, about what it was like to go back. New Zealand is home, but the cultural connections of our country are pretty strong for me,” says Abbas.

The book is written as a first-person account – Abbas’ perspective as a young boy. It covers three main parts of his life, the first being his life and memories growing up in a small village in Afghanistan. The second part is about the family’s fleeing of the Taliban and the journey to find a new life somewhere else. The final part is about what it’s been like for Abbas to grow up, begin a new life and settle in New Zealand. “It’s been incredibly humbling to see the response that the book has received,” he says.

Abbas really loves sharing his story and the opportunities he’s had since releasing the book. After each talk he stays back to talk to others and shares stories.

“I always stick around and make sure I have a chat with people, and to be honest, that’s the best part. So many people come up to me and they talk about their personal connections to Afghanistan – whether they travelled there on the old hippie route during the 60s and 70s, they volunteered with an aid agency, or where their sons or daughters have served in the New Zealand Defence Force. It’s pretty awesome to see that, despite how far away we are geographically. It astounds me how, regardless of where I am in New Zealand, there’s always one or two people who have a very close connection to Afghanistan,” says Abbas.

Queenstown and Central Otago are one of his favourite parts of the world. Now living in Wellington, he grew up in Christchurch and would take every opportunity to come visit these parts. “The climate, the geography, the people, the kind of rural setting – it’s all incredibly similar to my village in Afghanistan.”

Abbas will be sharing his amazing story at schools in Queenstown and Wanaka from the 7th to the 9th of November – these talks have been partly funded by ReadNZ via their Writers in Schools programme. He will talk at a community event at Remarkables Primary School on Monday the 7th, and this event was made possible by the support of Paper Plus and Desert Heart Wineries. Tickets are available by scanning the QR code.

Wesley John Fourie is an emerging artist whose work explores the sensual and the tactile. Their questioning of sexuality, nature, love, and loss, often manifests as large-scale soft sculptures. Textiles have long been a vehicle for storytelling but have recently had something of a renaissance in contemporary art. These thread-based ways of making offer powerful political and emotional associations, in Fourie’s practice they also offer direct relation to land forms through scale and to their creator through an intensity of making.

When did it click?

I had a breakthrough during an artist residency in Nepal when the gallery director asked the height of Aotearoa’s tallest mountain. When I told him Aoraki Mount Cook is 3,724m he said “Oh, not big at all!” and I thought “Umm F you dude, it is a very culturally important mountain!!” I had been knitting for a while and realised that it would be the best technique to create a scale model of the mountain, to show how big it was. The act of knitting the height of Aoraki was the beginning of what I now realise is a very important part of my practice.

What draws you to working with textiles?

The materiality of it. The fact you can see the work put into it. There are many mediums in contemporary art where people say “I could make that”, and most of the time with textiles it’s like... yes you could.. but it would take you several months and a lot of skill. Also, fabric is all around us and I like the intimacy of that. Our clothes, bedding, so much of what surrounds us is wrapped in fabric and it’s just a given but each and every piece of cloth carries with it a history. Fabric carries stories, we attach so much memory to it and to me it seems like the best material to use when exploring the topics I do in my practice.

Art is linked to desire and throughout history artists have transformed sexual energy into a creative force. Does this play a role in your work?

Definitely. I probably appear much more sexually liberated than I am in real life because of some of the content of my work. It’s important though, sex is what brought us all here and I find talking about it through art making is the easiest way for me to navigate my own sexuality. Though I’m much more interested in channeling that energy into an object rather than an orgasm.

The landscape plays a big part in the lives of this region, but is it an essential part of your life and art also?

Frequent contact with our natural environment is the only thing that keeps me sane. Also I think on some level as an immigrant to this country I use my practice to give thanks back to the land on which my feet stand. I worry about where our planet is going and if I can draw attention to both our arboreal environment as well as the soil in which their roots grow, hopefully it can begin a dialogue for the viewer on their own relationships to land.

What’s your dream project?

I feel very lucky because over the past few years I have exceeded what I ever thought would be possible and I have had to rewrite the answer to this question several times. Currently I’m doing an artist residency in Venice and to come back here to represent Aotearoa at the Venice Biennale would be pretty dope! So probably that?? In December I’ll be presenting at the 28th Slavonian Biennale in Croatia, and if that goes well I’ll be focusing more on international projects.

Wakatipu

TOUCHING HEARTS

ST JOHN’S TAKES TOP IMPACT100 GRANT

Theirs was a cause that tugged at the heartstrings of the more than 100 women benefactors who voted on this year’s five Impact100 Wakatipu finalists and so St John Wakatipu has taken out 2022’s main $148,000 funding grant. Some beautiful stories and pitches were shared by the five finalists for this year at a gala dinner at Rydges Hotel on Thursday evening (October 27).

More than 100 Impact100 women supporters who donated a total of $168,000 for this year’s round listened intently to detailed presentations about what the much-needed money would be spent on. It was then up to them to vote for a winner, with the other four charities each receiving $5000 grants to continue their great work. These were Youth Search and Rescue Trust, Life Education Trust Heartland Otago Southland, Turn Up The Music Trust and Te Atamira Whakatipu Community Trust.

Impact100 Wakatipu chair Clare Irons says, as always, it was an extremely difficult decision to make.

Needs included everything from pre-school music development programmes to kids’ mental health and well-being, but St John’s need really moved the women supporters, she says. “Each person from each organisation really spoke from the heart, but Sarah (Bloxham, from St John’s) really moved everybody and that cause was viewed as having a big impact on people’s lives,” says Clare. St John needs the money to keep up with demand for its regional health shuttle service, transporting patients to health and well-being appointments in Invercargill, and for its community outreach, which includes the popular Friendship Drive programme. Isolation and loneliness have become real problems during the events of the past two years, especially among the elderly, and Sarah says these services have become even

more vital. New vehicles are desperately needed – one wheelchair capable, to keep up with demand and that’s what the money would be spent on. St John’s Friendship Drives, taking the elderly or housebound on fun outings around the district, were launched locally a year ago – a first for the region. Volunteer drivers collect older people, or those unable to drive, and take them on these outings where companionship is a huge focus.

“This is making a big difference, giving these people the ability to get out of the house and explore our region,” says Clare. “These are people who would otherwise be housebound.”

A delighted St John community engagement co-ordinator Sarah Bloxham says they’re elated. “We’re greatly humbled by the generosity and support of the wonderful, community-spirited Impact100 women. It was an incredible evening and we are just so grateful to these women, some of whom have even offered to become volunteer drivers on our Friendship Drives,” says Sarah. It was extra special sharing the wonderful news that St John would receive $148,000 in funding with St John Wakatipu’s “very special friends” who use the services, as well as volunteers and staff, she says. “To have a wheelchair mobility capable Health Shuttle means we can serve more members of our community and enable them to get to their health-related appointments. This means they can also engage with our community through our St John Friendship Drive programme which addresses isolation and loneliness and promotes connection, friendship and well-being.”

Clare says there have been some amazing stories of how the four other finalists have spent their $5000 grants too. In 2020, the first year of the programme, Turn Up The Music Trust used its $5000 to make an amazing video which helped hook another funder to support the primaryschool aged programme it wanted funding for. Since its inception in 2020 Impact100 Wakatipu has donated almost $500,000 to charities in the Wakatipu.

Each of the women donate $1000 each and in these tougher economic times Clare says they’ve extended the timeframe for supporters to sign up

to donate for next year’s funding round. “They can register their interest this year for 2023 and we’re allowing them to part pay between November this year and the end of April 2023, then pay in full.” They are also welcoming local businesses to sponsor women from the community so they can take part.

A whole range of women make up Impact100 Wakatipu and Clare says it’s not just for those who have more disposable income. Some women are older, while others are younger professionals, working full-time mums, school teachers and the likes.

Last year Impact100 Wakatipu dished out a whopping $200,000 in total. This year’s funding was bolstered by a number of private individuals and the Hugo Charitable Trust which sponsored a number of women to become Impact100 supporters. Corporate sponsorship has also been received from Jarden to help with running the initiative.

Last year’s winners were Pivotal Point Charitable Trust and Routeburn Dart Wildlife Trust which secured $100,000 and $85,000 respectively.

Pivotal Point has used its grant to pilot a programme screening children for neurodiversity and to provide professional development for teachers helping those children in the school system.

Routeburn Dart Wildlife Trust has established Celium platform technology based trapping of feral cats in the Dart/Rees delta.

AN ENCHANTING TALE OF ARROWTOWN’S HISTORY - THE MARY COTTER TREE

A rich and valuable chapter of Arrowtown’s history has been unveiled with the launch of an enchanting and delightful true children’s story, written by Dunedin author Tony Hanning, a descendant of a well-known gold-rush family.

Now in his mid-80s, Tony and his siblings have savoured this precious family story about the planting of the first tree in Arrowtown’s famous 155-year-old Buckingham Street line-up. The trees were planted by early settlers, including Tony’s great-grandfather, Richard Cotter and his family in 1867.

In that family was Tony’s late great auntie, Mary Cotter, 20 months old at the time. The whole town had turned out for the planting of the avenue of 24 trees on each side – sycamores, elms, oaks and one rowan, set along the front of the now historic stone cottages.

Local residents were invited to join in the plantings and add their own trees creating what is now a renowned, beautiful and widely photographed avenue of trees, most spectacular in autumn with its array of gold, red and auburn colour.

The plaque at the base of the large sycamore tree planted outside the Cotter family home on Arrowtown’s library corner says ‘Mary Cotter Tree Planted 1867’ as a promise to young Mary that it was ‘her tree’. Her father, known as ‘Da Cotter’, promised little Mary – the focus of Tony’s book - that she could dance under the sycamore tree and it would be ‘her tree’.

“However, few people know about the man behind that first row of plantings – Scotsman Alexandra Innes, who was Arrowtown’s second mayor,” says Tony. Alec Innes worked for one of Queenstown’s founding fathers, Bendix Hallenstein, and both men sat on the Provincial

Council of the day. “Alec was a bachelor and he donated that whole row of trees on the south side of the avenue from the library corner to what was the Police Camp,” says Tony. The Cotter family, including Tony’s grandmother, Sarah Cotter - Mary’s older sister, lived in their home on the library site.

“We all knew the story about the Mary Cotter Tree so well, but I thought producing the book was a wonderful way to share it with everybody else,” says Tony, who was born and raised in Queenstown. He worked as director of the Catholic Education Office from Dunedin covering this region for nearly 40 years and says he’s written the story so that children from seven upwards can read it. “As Rudyard Kipling said, ‘If history were taught in the form of stories it would never be forgotten,” says Tony. “A Native American proverb also says, ‘Tell me the facts and I’ll learn. Tell me the truth and I’ll believe. But tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever.’ In a sense that’s what The Mary Cotter Tree has been to me.”

His children’s book, ‘The Mary Cotter Tree’, has been beautifully illustrated by another Mary Cotter – great granddaughter of Tom, one of Mary Cotter (Senior’s) brothers. The book’s been designed by former Otago University graphic designer Peter Scott.

It tells the tale of the day the Cotter tree was planted from little Mary’s perspective and her excitement at being allowed to dance around the tree once it was planted.

Equally as satisfying for Tony is the inclusion of Alec Innes in the story. “I’ve emphasised this as it’s always troubled me that he was never really acknowledged in history for all he’d done for

Tony was unable to find Alec in Arrowtown Cemetery records, or his grave, although he was buried there after dying young at 52. “All I could find was that his funeral was taken by Reverend D. Ross in the Presbyterian Church.”

Tony’s now going to suggest that a plaque be laid under one of the famous avenue of trees, honouring Alec Innes. “I intend approaching the Queenstown and District Historical Society and Lakes District Museum to ask how best this can be done. I think it’s appropriate for us to remember him for his generosity in donating all those trees –a significant contribution back then.”

The Cotters, now remembered through Cotter Ave in Arrowtown, made significant sacrifice themselves to settle there, says Tony. “Da and Ma Cotter, as they were known to us, walked from Dunedin to Kingston, via Southland, to settle in Arrowtown. My great uncle, Patrick, and great auntie Ellie sat on the dray while my great grandmother, Frances, then pregnant with great uncle Tom, walked alongside with my great grandfather.” To add to their pain, the family had not long tragically lost a son to drowning on the Australian goldfields.

Tony would now like to write more stories focusing on the drownings and dangers people faced back in the mining days.

The Mary Cotter Tree retails for just $20 and can be purchased from Lakes District Museum’s book store or direct from Tony (plus postage) on tonyhceo@earthlight.co.nz

Arrowtown, including donating and planting those trees.” Author, Tony Hanning, and Illustrator, Mary Cotter with her Dad, Dick Cotter from Hawea, celebrated the launch of a book about their Great Aunt Mary’s tree - the first in the avenue. The Queenstown Lakes District Museum, Arrowtown, hosted a well-attended function on Saturday night, 29 October.
