Exercise your democratic right… we are at a crossroads

This is looking grim folks and an embarrassing slight on our democratic rights. At the time of writing (Friday 29 Sept) only 9% of eligible voters have returned their papers. Piss poor result and cold comfort to say our absolute apathy is in line with the national trend.

The lead up to voting time in the QLDC and ORC elections have given many opportunities to meet candidates and ask questions. And there are more options and positions to choose from in living memory. And with no clear leader for Mayor or Council your vote really does count. If the voting numbers remain as low as they are every vote is critical.

I’ve been following the campaign trail and we have had everything from mudslinging, conspiracy theorists, do gooders and dreamers with no idea. From time to time even some commonsense, shock horror. But what I have not seen is the engagement from the people making the real decisions here, that’s us the voting public who on a majority vote will pass the keys to the biggest business in town to those smiling billboard faces you see on the side of the road.

With only a few days to go to get your postal vote in, the talk of the town is still one of real indecision. I respect all the people who have put their names forward, so I am not going to call them uninspiring. However, the fact is nobody has absolutely owned it as far as I have seen, and really convinced the majority they are the real deal. So, it falls back on us to dig a little deeper because there is legitimate talent there wanting to be voted in. We need them not the pretenders. You just need to find them and if reading the little information pamphlet that came with your voting papers is all you have, then read the darn thing and feel good about making a decision.

The worst decision is no decision at all and living in a district at a crossroad in its development, you may well regret not taking the time to exercise your democratic right. The outcome of this election will have a profound effect on our lives weather you like it or not. And if you don’t vote don’t complain about the result and don’t complain about what those elected do next. It could be great, or it could get ugly. The choice quite literally is yours. Cast your vote before the 8th but if you are posting it back the papers need to be in the mail by the 4th October.

If you haven’t got voting papers for whatever reason call into the council offices in Queenstown or Wanaka where you can obtain special voting papers.

Health crisis could drive talent overseas

I’m not a fan of the public medical facilities in the Queenstown Lakes region, which are so limited that anything remotely serious requires a trip to Invercargill or Dunedin. As has long been said, we need a publicly-funded hospital capable of coping with our region’s needs, including accidents and emergencies, and resourced for the natural disaster that will surely one day come. It’s reprehensible that so much capital expenditure is being directed to a new facility in Dunedin at the expense of the fastest growing region in the country.

But the first thing we must do is ensure we retain the multi-skilled and hardworking doctors, nurses and health care staff we have in our region, and in New Zealand as a whole. They continue to punch above their weight, delivering terrific care within a broken system.

This week, the New Zealand Nurses Organisation is calling on its 35,000 members to turn down extra hospital shifts, as the union looks to negotiate how they are compensated. The $100-per-extra-shift winter bonus is about to end. The union wants a deal which reflects the pressure and burnout they are coping with.

Unfortunately, it seems all the Ministry can do is offer more threats, suggesting that refusing to work extra shifts amounts to strike action. Incredible.

Just like for staff in other industries, we are competing in a global marketplace now. Under the current conditions, we’re likely to lose more talent overseas, to the likes of Canada and Australia, which has more modern resources, pays more, and has a funding system through Medicare to pay for it. An astonishing 90% of our health workforce believe the current situation is a crisis.

Health Minister, Andrew Little, who is supposed to be the chief advocate, lobbyist and strategist for the service, appears completely disconnected from his Ministry. He refuses to recognise there is a systemic crisis, with chronic staff shortages across most departments. He instead palms it off on the massive restructure to Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand, suggesting it is the former health boards that should shoulder the blame.

During Covid, while the Government was throwing money everywhere, Minister Little seemed to be holding the door, rather than pushing his way to the front of the queue. In the cold light of day, while the Shovel-Ready scheme was a way to ensure at least some people had ongoing work, would it not have been better to spend the money on the health service, during a pandemic.

Imagine what an impact $2.6 billion could have had on a national level. Or, for a local perspective, imagine the $85m Government funding for the streetscape and arterial route instead lavished on Lakes District Hospital, both physically and in terms of staff recruitment and wages. Do we need new pavements, or should we look to pay our nurses and doctors proper wages, encouraging more people to train for careers in the health service, knowing they will be looked after.

Locals recognise the extraordinary job our health professionals do every day, in difficult circumstances. Shame they don’t have the support from their bosses on a national level.

Big pay hike for drivers

Queenstown’s troubled Orbus will be able to recruit drivers from overseas after raising wages to $27.76.

The bus service, run by Otago Regional Council and operated by Ritchies, is operating on a reduced timetable in Queenstown and also Dunedin.

In August, ORC increased wages by 90c, upping drivers’ pay to the hourly 2022 Living Wage of $23.65. That move cost $500k.

But last week, it announced a further huge hike, up to the median wage of $27.76, effective immediately, and costing an estimated $2 million.

That should give it greater pull in the cutthroat local jobs market, while also enabling Ritchies to recruit offshore, in line with the Government visa threshold, which is benchmarked to the median wage.

One Queenstown driver, who did not want to be named, tells the Lakes Weekly Bulletin the increase is a step in the right direction.

“Many drivers, including myself, wish it would have been implemented much sooner on, but certainly better late than never. I think it will certainly help with recruiting new drivers, and potentially even draw back in some drivers who had resigned.”

Driver morale has risen since the announcement, he says, which should help with retention.

“Various drivers have their different reasons for leaving in the recent months, contributing to the driver shortage, but I think the low pay rate was high on the list of reasons for many.

“Now that we have a respectable wage it will make the job much more attractive in Queenstown’s job market.”

Queenstown-based Otago Regional Councillor Alexa Forbes says the council realised the previous increase wasn’t enough to make operators competitive in recruiting staff.

“And we needed to get the money up to a level where we could employ immigrant labour, which the buses have relied on for years,” Forbes says.

“You have to employ migrants on a median wage now, which is a fantastic thing, and now we’re in a position to do that.”

ORC has put the wage forward as a minimum, but operators choose to pay more on top as they try to lure drivers away from tourism firms, trucking companies, taxis, uber, and other professions.

“I think it will definitely help,” Forbes says, “but it is only a band aid. It is only the first step.

“The next step would be putting together a governance committee that can drive a much better bus service, better engagement and better customer service.”

A new governance committee could include Queenstown Lakes District Council and Dunedin City Council, which have been making noises about councils taking over running the services.

The Government has also recently introduced the Sustainable Public Transport Framework, which gives regional councils greater flexibility.

“It replaces the PTOM (Public Transport Operating Model) model, the race for the bottom model. We now have more of an empowerment model going on,” Forbes says.

Passenger numbers on public transport have taken a hit worldwide since the pandemic hit, exacerbated in Queenstown by an unreliable service.

On top of timetable cuts, there are on-going, widespread cancelations daily.

ORC Interim Chief Executive Dr Pim Borren says continuing the status quo “is not an option”.

Borren will present several options to the incoming ORC Council, including joint governance arrangements QLDC and DCC, if those councils agree.

The focus will be to consider what is affecting services and timetables and how driver shortages, pay rates, driver recruitment and retention and localised issues, such as accommodation, can be addressed.

He says the reduced timetables in both centres originally planned for the short term have now remained in place “indefinitely”.

“However, on the basis of our actions and working with our two bus operators, we anticipate a return to full timetable services after the December and January summer period,” Dr Borren says.

Would-be mayors have their say... on why you should vote for them

Who should be Queenstown Lakes’ next mayor?

It’s the final week of campaigning in the local government elections, with the deadline for votes at noon, this Saturday, October 8. The six candidates for mayor have given their views on the biggest issues facing the district, including transport, rates and the council’s ambitious 10-year plan, over the past five weeks in Lakes Weekly Bulletin. They’re all available to read on the Queenstown App

This week, we’ve asked the big one: Why should people vote for you? What are your election promises?

Age: 39

Occupation:

It would be best if people didn’t have to elect a representative if they could represent themselves to their council, but this is not an option, the public have to choose a representative. They should vote for me because I promise to listen more to the public if elected, and involve them more in the decisionmaking process of council. I have noticed generally, once elected politicians don’t normally keep their promises, in fact, they normally end up doing the complete opposite. But I’d like to try out something different if elected. That’s why I’m running, I’d like to do the things I say I’m going to do. Imagine if someone in politics did that even one time? Amazing. For more information go to ‘’Daniel Shand for QLDC’’ Facebook.

Age: 37

Occupation:

Our community needs a leader with a firm action plan, and the skills and track record to get things done.

I have set out on my website everything I will achieve in the first 100 days if I’m lucky enough to be Mayor.

My key promises are:

• Rebuild trust and confidence in the Council, with greater transparency.

Lakes Trust

Alistair Angus

Age: over 64

Occupation: Retired

I am committed to use every method available to stop the three waters “hostile takeover”. Starting with a vote on re-joining the “coalition of councils” opposed to three waters. I will also be calling for feedback and ideas on how to retain our biggest asset.

Rebuild trust between council and the public. To do this we must have a swift and unbiased investigation into the last six years, possibly more. Has it been all above board with people simply ignorant of the rules or have offences been committed? Does “A steep learning curve” as stated by one councillor mean they will never do it again, or they’ve learnt how not to get caught again? Transparency, starting with the Wānaka airport lease.

Glyn Lewers

Age: 44

Occupation: Structural Engineer, Current QLDC Councillor, Board member of Destination Queenstown and Startup Queenstown Lakes

• Address the housing crisis and re-form the Mayoral Housing Taskforce.

• Stop Project Manawa (new council building), a $50m waste.

• Diversify our economy and attract high value industries and jobs to our region.

• Act against Three Waters reforms.

• Prevent expansion of the Wanaka airport and Queenstown noise boundary.

• Stop the proposal of 16 sets of traffic lights down Frankton Road / Frankton / Ladies Mile.

• LISTEN to all communities. We need someone who is collaborative and values the views of everyone.

My full 100-day plan can be viewed at www.voteforolivia. com/100-day-plan

If elected mayor, I will waste no time hitting the ground running. I’ve spent the past 1000 days as a councillor, learning the inner workings of local government and the plans and policies that govern us. I’ve sat across all four committees and made decisions on many projects, including complex infrastructure projects that will benefit the district into the future.

Leading an agile council will be critical due to the tsunami of legislative reform coming our way from Central Government. And let’s not forget our district’s Spatial Plan, the draft Destination Management Strategy, and the Diversification Strategy, currently being developed, which sets the basis of how we will manage growth.

I will listen to the newly elected officials and find out their aspirations and interests for the communities they represent. I will facilitate discussions and work fast to build a strong culture reflected across QLDC and outwards to our communities.

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN Page 8

Jon Mitchell Age: 58

I bring experience that our communities and council sorely need: five decades of knowledge of the district and its people; over 30 years in leadership roles; 25 years in local government, community/ economic development, and disaster management; 12 years private and public sector governance, and; 10 years delivering collaborative crisis leadership training.

Queenstown Lakes and its council are facing multiple crises. I am here to help lead our communities to a more sustainable and resilient future.

Election promises:

Neeta Shetty

Age: 48

Occupation: Self-employed

People should vote for me because I am an independent candidate and my only vested interest is as a community member.

• BUSINESS - community and business at the centre of our decision-making so we can protect the integrity of our environment.

• ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY - I am entirely committed to accountability and transparency to restore public trust.

• STAFFING ISSUES - our staffing issues can be alleviated by advocating for some required skills to have less bureaucracy. However, the latest staffing issues are exacerbated by housing issues.

• HOUSING - QLDC should partner with other organisations in the community to create a more sustainable and inclusive housing market.

• TRANSPORT AND ROADING - a robust public transport that is accessible, reliable and efficient. Public transport that is not an alternative means of transport but a purposefully built primary means of transport. This also ties in with our climate change responsibility.

• EMERGING FROM COVID PLAN - We should implement a plan to aid our businesses in regaining full operating capacity.

• ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION - invest in education. Encourage films and television.

HALO FORBIDDEN BITE CAFÉ CLOSES

Leaving a halo over the town – Bruce and Claire Gourlay

Retiring from Queenstown hospitality after 25 years in the business, Halo Forbidden Bite Café owners Bruce and Claire Gourlay have something to say to anyone who disses backpackers. “Apparently backpackers aren’t New Zealand’s main tourism push anymore, but so many of us came here as backpackers and now own successful businesses,” says Claire. It all started when Bruce, a Scottish chef from Crieff, and Claire, a London marketing executive from Cambridge, England, both on their OE, met working in hospitality at a Sydney surf club in 1990.

A trip to Queenstown in 1991 had them hooked and after a nine-month stint working here, some more travel, and time back home where they owned a Scottish café, they returned in the late 1990s. Bruce first worked for Barry Ellis at the Pig & Whistle, then for the Imlach family at Queenstown Wholesale Market (now Raeward Fresh). He and Claire bought Café Mondo in 2001 with three kids, including a three-month-old baby, in tow. Within five years they’d also opened Snatch in Arrowtown. For four years from 2007 they ran two cafes – Snatch and Halo Forbidden Bite in Camp Street, which they launched in a new building in 2007. To add to the pressures Bruce got a call six weeks after they’d opened from Coca Cola’s coffee brand, Halo, telling them they had to change the name. “I told them to stick it as we were ‘Halo Forbidden Bite’ and I never heard from them again,” he says.

They are no strangers to hard work, something that’s held them in good stead through serious staff shortages this year. Claire even worked in the Scottish café the day she gave birth to eldest son Mati. However, that was all peanuts compared with the pressures they’ve been under in business during the past three or four months. They refused to shut with, at times, only half the staff they needed, both working extremely long hours. “I remember one day in July we were getting frazzled. Both mountains and the airport were closed, the dishes were piled high at 3pm and we just went and got pizza and sat down with the staff for a break,” says Bruce. “It’s been against our moral fibre to close. People expect an experience when they come here.”

“We couldn’t have done it without our amazing team,” says Claire, who, like Bruce, is very excited to have a permanent break with holidays, family time and travel all planned on the horizon. “We’re shaking off the chains. It’s the right time for us, but we wish the new owners (Future Hospitality Group) the best. We know they will do it well.”

Bruce had wanted to sell Halo three years ago, and while Claire says it may have been a good plan, their youngest daughter is about to graduate from uni so they’re pleased they waited.

“We knuckled down and did the hard grind and now we’ve sold on the up,” says Claire. It may have been immensely challenging during these past few years, especially the past three months, but as she says it’s been a good problem to have. “The staff shortages were inevitable,” says Bruce. “They opened the borders to tourists before the workers.”

And lockdown wasn’t all bad. Bruce was concerned about security, leaving the business unmanned for so long so took the entire stock of alcohol home. “It lasted us a full six weeks,” grins

Claire. “The final nail in the coffin for us was the mandates though. That was the hardest time. We didn’t like the discrimination.”

However, there have been many happy years turning out Halo’s renowned bacon and eggs, and chorizo or vegan burritos, to start the day, also the long-held favourite – chicken cashew salad, on the menu from day one. Among Queenstown’s first to introduce vegan food, Halo’s Tuesday night vegan menu was hugely popular, long before it became fashionable. “It hasn’t been all work, work. We’ve worked hard but played hard, enjoying many wonderful months of overseas travel with the kids,” says Bruce.

They’ve had the best landlord all these years too. “Our landlord was God,” smiles Claire, “the Anglican Diocese of Dunedin, and they’ve

been absolutely amazing, looking after us through Covid times. We’ve had a great working relationship.”

For the Gourlays the most rewarding aspect of running Halo has been their regulars, and the people they’ve met and pondered menus and drink selections with. Bruce has even had to help well-known American actors decide whether to mix their drinks or not. “It’s the people we’ll miss the most,” he says. However, with son Mati and daughter Leah owning their own café, Hustl, at Five Mile the Gourlay hospitality legacy will live on. “We’re heading to Australia for a month’s holiday then maybe some Asian travel early next year before heading to Mexico and South America, but we’ll be back,” says Bruce.

Halo owners Bruce and Claire Gourlay, are saying goodbye to hospitality after 25 years.

FROM AROUND THE WORLD

‘Knocking on Famine’s Door’: UN Food Chief Wants Action Now

The U.N. food chief warned last week that the world is facing “a perfect storm on top of a perfect storm” and urged donors, particularly Gulf nations and billionaires, to give a few days of profits to tackle a crisis with the fertilizer supply right now and prevent widespread food shortages next year.

“Otherwise, there’s gonna be chaos all over the world,” World Food Program Executive Director David Beasley said in an interview.

Beasley said that when he took the helm of WFP 5 and a 1/2 years ago, only 80 million people around the world were headed toward starvation.

Climate problems have increased that number to 135 million. The COVID-19 pandemic, doubled it to 276 million people not knowing where their next meal was coming from. Finally, Russia invaded Ukraine, sparking a war and a food, fertilizer and energy crisis that has pushed the number to 345 million.

Apple says it has started making its iPhone 14 in India as it diversifies its supply chains away from China.

The company makes most of its phones in China but has shifted some production outside the country as tensions rise between Washington and Beijing.

China’s ‘zero-Covid’ policies, that triggered widespread lockdowns, have also caused major disruptions during the pandemic.

Taiwan-based Foxconn, which manufactures the majority of Apple’s phones, has had an operation in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu since 2017, where it makes older versions of the handsets. But now, Apple is betting big to make in India its newest product - the iPhone 14.

Oktoberfest is back but inflation hits brewers, cost of beer

Oktoberfest is back in Germany after two years of pandemic cancellations — the same bicep-challenging beer mugs, fat-dripping pork knuckles, pretzels the size of dinner plates, men in leather shorts and women in cleavage-baring traditional dresses.

But while brewers are more than glad to see the return of the Bavarian capital’s sudsy tourist centerpiece, both they and visitors are under pressure from inflation in a way that could scarcely be imagined the last time it was held in 2019.

For one thing, the 1-liter (2-pint) mug of beer will cost between 12.60 and 13.80 euros this year, which is an increase of about 15% compared with 2019, according to the official Oktoberfest homepage.

The event opens when Munich’s mayor taps the first keg and announces “O’zapft is,” or “It’s tapped” in Bavarian dialect.

Hilary Mantel, the Booker Prize-winning author who turned Tudor power politics into page-turning fiction in the acclaimed “Wolf Hall” trilogy of historical novels, has died. She was 70.

Mantel died “suddenly yet peacefully” surrounded by close family and friends after suffering a stroke, publisher HarperCollins said.

THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE

Move to make swimming safer

Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is seeking community feedback on proposed changes to several ski lane locations on the lakes. QLDC Regulatory Manager, Anthony Hall said staff have identified key areas across the district that required changes, notably ski lanes near popular swimming locations and picnic beaches.

“Boaties throughout the Queenstown Lakes generally use these lanes as intended, but we’re seeing examples of swimmers and other recreational users of our lakes entering these areas and creating a safety concern,” Hall says.

Changes are proposed to ski lanes in Kingston, Kelvin Grove, Roys Bay, Glendhu Bay, Sunshine Bay and Wilson Bay, (see maps below) and include: •Minor adjustments to the locations of these ski lanes

• Narrowing the footprint of each ski lane to 60 metres at the beach with a 100m entry point

•New signage and buoys to be installed, detailing where the ski lanes are and how to use them safely.

Hall encouraged boaties, swimmers, and other recreational users of waterways in the district to find out more about Council’s proposed changes and to have their say.

“Our Waterways team will review all feedback with an aim to implement any changes ahead of the summer period later this year,” said Mr Hall.

More information on the proposed safety improvements to waterways and a feedback form can be found at letstalk.qldc.govt.nz/waterways-safetyimprovements.

Feedback closes on Sunday 23 October 2022.

Kiwi Water Park faces uncertain future

The owners of Central Otago’s famous Kiwi Water Park fear they won’t be able to open this summer due to bureaucratic red tape.

The popular water park, located on a reserve shared by freedom campers and boaties off State Highway 8 in Lowburn near Cromwell, is caught up in lengthy delays and indecision over a right-turning bay into the reserve area. It needs the go-ahead from Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) and the Central Otago District Council (CODC) .

And, if the issue isn’t resolved by November 4, the park won’t have a license to legally operate this summer.

“We have been waiting for six months for a decision over whether we need to install a right turn bay into our park, or if the speed limit should be lowered instead, to legally operate – but no one will give us an answer,” park co-owner Emily Rutherford says.

“In the meantime, our business planning and recruitment of staff for this season hangs in the balance – we’ve got two months till we open and we need action urgently.”

Established in 2020 by Emily and her mother Janet Rutherford, the water park has been a popular activity for two summers. Last summer saw 30,000 people through the park – a 100% increase on the previous year.

Kiwi Water Park was originally granted a six-year consent by CODC to operate at the Lowburn Reserve. Last season, the Rutherfords shifted the park to a more sheltered area at the reserve and had to apply for a variation to their consent.

Waka Kotahi raised concerns about the number of vehicles entering the reserve, so a temporary speed reduction along the stretch of road was installed.

Both the park and LINZ agreed to monitor traffic and concluded the majority of traffic was caused by freedom campers and boaties – and that a right turning bay was needed.

LINZ also suggested the area would become a no-freedom-camping zone, Rutherford says.

But time has dragged on and nothing has been finalised, despite Rutherford writing to LINZ Minister Damien O’Connor in desperation.

“We were given a six-year consent to operate, so in good faith we’ve invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment and infrastructure for the enjoyment of many.

“But in reality, we’ve only been given two years. That’s not fair.”

The Rutherfords say they’re happy to contribute towards some of the costs for the right turning bay – so long as they can be guaranteed a longer lease period - but it won’t be completed by November.

They’ve suggested Waka Kotahi could lower the speed limit in the area – but that’s also been stonewalled by the authorities.

NIGEL BROWN

SNOW MAN

An entrepreneurial spirit comes with the territory when you’re born into Queenstown’s well-known Brown family, and Nigel Brown’s successful business ventures fully reflect that.

Not only has he succeeded in carrying on his late father, Doug Brown’s local real estate renown for almost 40 years, Nigel’s dabbled in everything from importing ski gear and building spec houses to international FIS official and charter boat skipper.

“It was hard not to be entrepreneurial with Betty (Mum) around, Dad too,” grins Nigel.

Skiing and sailing have always been his greatest passions though and they’ve taken him all over the world.

Born and raised in Invercargill until he was 13, Nigel was on skis, aged two – the eldest of four sons. “We’d drive to Queenstown every Friday night and sleep all the way home on Sunday night. Mum changed my brothers’ nappies in the car up the mountain.”

Doug spent a year buying up Invercargill houses for Comalco when Tiwai Point Smelter was being built. Nigel’s parents then announced the family was off to travel the world. “We got as far as Sydney,” says Nigel. “It was the year after the moon landing (1970).” Here Nigel discovered his love of sailing. “I’d sail at every available club every weekend, managing four sessions a weekend,” he says. “I think it was the physics of making the boat move, creating its own lift. I loved it.”

hosted us in their 300 to 400-year-old Landhaus (guest house) with all the ski importers.” Still in his 20s, it was a sharp move.

“We put in an order for 100 pairs of skis and boots to start our own ski rental shop (Brown’s Ski Rentals) and kicked Betty out of her shop so we could move in.”

In the early 1980s Nigel and Derek built some spec units in Fernhill during summer while Nigel coached the QST (Queenstown Alpine Ski Team) during winter. Ski star Simon Wi Rutene also invited him to coach him in Europe in the late 1980s as assistant coach of the NZ Team, which included Nils Coberger, Markus and Mattias Hubrich.

“We went to the NZ Trade Show each year and one year the head of the NZ Ski Association invited me to become an international FIS technical delegate. They’re like the head of the jury at a ski race with full control over the rules, safety and how the race is conducted.” He was just 25 and it took a few years to qualify but Nigel still travels overseas every winter doing this work. Now renowned internationally with 40 years’ experience, he’s in demand in the US, South America and Australia. A technical delegate he supervised is now FIS Alpine Technical and Administration Coordinator.

Nigel joined Doug selling real estate in the mid-1980s, launching another 40-year career. “The Gold Ridge Hotel land (Holiday Inn now) on Frankton Road was my first million dollar sale. It was just before the 1987 sharemarket crash.” Balmoral Drive sections were selling for about $70,000 while sections in Fernhill sold for $15,000 to $20,000.

He and wife Bridget built Brown’s Boutique Hotel which opened in 2000, and not long after ran a charter boat, Luanda, on the lake.

However, after three years there, when Nigel was 16, the family moved back to Queenstown. “Betty didn’t like the heat so Dad said there’s no point in going anywhere else.” After a short stint at Queenstown and Districts High School Nigel was “hooked” on ski racing. He left school and went building with Uncle Ted during summer and skied all winter. “It was a great life.”

Doug had bought a fruit shop in Shotover Street which was just a gravel road then, barely any cars. “Local kids played cricket and tossed rugby balls in the street. Everybody knew each other. The population was 1500.”

They bought Nigel a yacht from Te Anau where he had to race in weekends until the Wakatipu Yacht Club was formed. Nigel even built his little brothers a race yacht in the garage.

Doug was soon selling real estate again and Betty set up a second-hand store.

Nigel raced on the NZ Ski Team from 17 until 19, placing third in the nationals, training in Europe. At 19 he quit racing but drove Derek up the mountain for his NZ Team training camps. “That’s where I met the world’s first professional ski team coach, then New Zealand’s first full-time coach, Andreas Hefti, who invited me to be assistant coach.” A three-month stint back in Switzerland followed, with Nigel coaching the NZ Team, including Derek, travelling the race circuit to Germany and Austria.

By now a qualified ski instructor, Nigel was on the look-out for a new opportunity. He and Derek went to the big world trade fair, ISPO, where they picked up the rights to import Dachstein ski boots to New Zealand. “They

Nigel ski raced competitively until he was 35 and still races his yacht, coming second in the nationals this year and winning the Donald Hay Race locally in early 1990s. He, Derek, and a friend, have won the Nolex 25 Nationals three times and in the mid-2000s Nigel competed in several world championships, sailing etchells.

Unsurprisingly, his four kids have followed onto both the snow and water, top racers and coaches among them. “I’ve just loved being involved with skiing and sailing.”

Electric aeroplane by 2030 - Sounds Air

Regional airline Sounds Air, which operates scheduled services at Wānaka Airport, has been named on a new industry advisory board to help fast-track the release of Heart Aerospace’s (Sweden) electric aircraft, the ES-30.

The aircraft, which can fly up to 400 kilometres in fully electric mode with zero emissions, is on track to be available for service from 2028.

Returning from the hangar launch of the ES-30 in Sweden last week, Sounds Air Group board chair and director Rhyan Wardman told the Wānaka App “it was a great opportunity for interested parties in the decarbonated aviation space to come together and get the latest update”.

“For us it is a big jump to go to a 30-seater, however the launch is slated for 2028 which realistically means 2030 for us here in New Zealand and that affords us enough time to grow into that product,” he said.

“We certainly see regional connectivity as likely to increase with this technology and we’re excited that this solution, as a potentially zero emission aircraft, will be good for us in the fullness of time.”

Christchurch Airport (CIAL), Air New Zealand, and Wellington Airport are also on the 21-member board and attended the launch along with New Zealand’s ambassador to Sweden.

“I think it speaks volumes about our nation’s intent and enthusiasm to embrace this new evolution,” Rhyan said.

In October 2020 Sounds Air signed a letter of intent with Heart Aerospace to purchase electric aircraft and said they were running simulations to see how they would work in New Zealand.

“They are looking for input so it’s very positive and we will be an enthusiastic contributor to that board,” Rhyan said.

Christchurch Airport sustainability and planning general manager Nick Flack said “aviation needs to decarbonise and globally there is an enormous effort to do so”.

“Heart Aerospace’s ES-30 is a good example of the new generation of low and no carbon aircraft that are in development. We are 100 percent committed to doing all we can to get these to market.”

The ES-30 is driven by electric motors powered by batteries, allowing the aircraft to operate with zero operational emissions and low noise.

The aircraft will include a reserve-hybrid configuration, consisting of two turbo generators powered by sustainable aviation fuel. The reservehybrid system is installed to secure reserve energy requirements without cannibalising battery range, and it can also be used during cruise on longer flights to complement the electrical power provided by the batteries.

The ES-30 will have the flexibility to fly up to 800 kilometres with 25 passengers.

COMMUNITY NOTES

Celebrate our multicultural month

There is a veritable feast of events to experience across Whakatipu this October and you are invited.

Organised and hosted by members of our local migrant community, these events showcase cultural traditions and customs through performance and food.

Here’s what is on offer:

• 1 October: Chuseok Korean Thanksgiving from 12.00pm to 3.00pm at Queenstown Event Centre (QEC).

• 8 October: Queenstown Multicultural Festival – Celebrating our Asian communities from 10.00am to 6.00pm at Queenstown Memorial Centre.

• 22 and 23 October: Queenstown Lakes Subcontinental Community Cricket Festival – Sri Lanka, India and Nepal – play begins at 9.00am on both days at Queenstown Event Centre . On Saturday 22 October from 6.00pm to 9.00pm join a community gathering with cultural performances and traditional food at Queenstown Memorial Centre.

• 29 October: Diwali Festival from 6.00pm to 11.00pm at Queenstown Event Centre.

The Welcoming Communities programme is a government-funded initiative led locally by QLDC which aims to support newcomers to feel welcome and able to participate in the economic, civic, cultural and social life of their new community.

QLDC Welcoming Communities Coordinator Silvia Dancose is excited to see these events come to life.

“Supporting and encouraging our newcomer community to host events and share their culture with the wider community is a powerful way to connect people and build friendships,” she said.

The Queenstown Multicultural Festival will be the first of an ongoing annual event to be hosted in the district. The festival brings a diverse range of Asian communities together to share language workshops, national cuisine and performances as well as showcasing their cultural traditions and customs to the wider community. The Subcontinental Cricket Festival is another first in our community.

“We hope to see more sports tournaments such as cricket, football, volleyball and basketball bringing migrant communities together not only as participants but also as event organisers”, she said.

In the two years prior to the pandemic, the district’s Waitangi Day celebrations showcased multicultural performances from Asia, Africa and South America. These were mainly aimed to entertain the wider community and tourists rather than represent the migrant demographics of the district. While these upcoming events build on previous multicultural celebrations, they are considered a new and innovative welcoming activity, designed, led and coordinated solely by newcomer groups residing in our district instead of council or tourism operators managing them.

Community News

Changes proposed to waterways

QLDC is seeking feedback on proposed changes to several ski lane locations on the regions waterways, designed to improving safety ahead of the busy summer period.

QLDC Regulatory Manager, Anthony Hall said Council’s Waterways staff had identified key areas across the district that required changes, notably ski lanes near popular swimming locations and picnic beaches.

“Boaties throughout the Queenstown Lakes generally use these lanes as intended, but we’re seeing examples of swimmers and other recreational users of our lakes entering these areas and creating a safety concern,” said Mr Hall.

Changes are proposed to ski lanes in Kingston, Kelvin Grove, Roys Bay, Glendhu Bay, Sunshine

The Queenstown Multicultural Festival and the Subcontinental Cricket Festival provide an opportunity to showcase different ethnicities and to also empower the committee and organisers in leading and choreographing the event. It is hoped that these events will grow as more newcomer groups – especially Latin American and European - representing the rich diversity of our district will join in and the festivals will be embedded as part of the district’s annual major events.

Welcoming Communities is linked to the MBIE New Zealand Migrant Settlement and Integration Strategy which contains five key outcomes. One of them is Inclusion which means migrants participate in and have a sense of belonging to their community and to New Zealand. This is done in two ways – the multicultural events in October are an example where migrants can visibly celebrate their culture with other New Zealanders who in turn learn and understand more about migrant cultures. The goal is for the wider community to have more interaction with specific migrant groups to embrace diversity and make the Queenstown Lakes district an even more welcoming corner of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is delighted to be supporting these events through the Local Community Support Grant and Welcoming Communities MBIE programme funding. Other funding partners include DIA Lottery Grants Board, Skycity Community Trust, Connecting Communities fund, Creative Communities Scheme and Central Lakes Arts Support Scheme (CLASS).

Bay and Wilson Bay, and include:

• Minor adjustments to the locations of these ski lanes

• Narrowing the footprint of each ski lane to 60 metres at the beach with a 100 metre entry point

• New signage and buoys to be installed, detailing where the ski lanes are and how to use them safely.

Boaties, swimmers, and other recreational users are being encouraged to find out more about Council’s proposed changes and have their say.

More information on the proposed safety improvements to waterways and a feedback form can be found at letstalk.qldc.govt.nz/waterwayssafety-improvements.

Feedback closes on Sunday 23 October 2022.

More GoodYarn mental health workshops for Queenstown

Recognising issues like staff shortages, increased living costs and separation from family support networks are continuing to impact people’s mental health, the Te Hau Toka Southern Lakes Wellbeing Group and Head Light Trust are stepping up efforts to help the Queenstown community.

Te Hau Toka has provided the Head Light Trust with funding to run 15 additional GoodYarn workshops across Queenstown between October 2022 and June 2023. Some will be made free of charge, while others will be subsidised.

Since April 2021, ‘GoodYarn Community’, an innovative peer-delivered mental health programme, has brought together nearly 300 locals from all walks of life to talk about mental health and arm themselves with more knowledge, strategies and skills to help care for themselves and others.

stay well so “the more people who can access the programme, the better”. A particular focus will be on ‘caring for the carers’, with the three-hour workshops offered to local social agencies, not-for-profit organisations and volunteers working with people who are under increased stress.

Small businesses will also be a priority, particularly those in regular contact with people under pressure, such as professional services, hairdressers, accountants, physios and allied health with under 50 staff.

The Head Light Trust will also run a free open workshop in partnership with Queenstown Lakes District Council Libraries on 8 October for community members wanting to learn how to talk to a family, whānau member or friend about mental health.

The workshops will help people understand:

• what mental health is and how to look after your mental health

• how to talk to someone if you are concerned about your/their mental health

• the signs and symptoms of mental stress and distress

• information about where to go for support.

The workshops are delivered by peer facilitators who are well-known and respected local people who are passionate about mental health and supporting community wellbeing and know first-hand the challenges people are dealing with. Content has also been adapted to suit individuals, community leaders, cultural groups, new and expectant parents, and small businesses.

Head Light Trust Chief Executive Anna Dorsey says that the beefed-up training schedule will make it easier to spread knowledge and tools to improve mental health and wellbeing across the community.

“With more people attending workshops, it’s giving them the skills and confidence to raise awareness about mental health and be able to help themselves and those around them who are struggling. It’s a great opportunity to help keep our community well and build resilience for the future.”

First Thursdays Queenstown – October Event

Get ready art lovers, this Thursday 6 October First Thursdays Queenstown continues its successful run of open-late nights. Bringing together five leading Queenstown galleries, the event sees Starkwhite, Milford Galleries, Romer, Artbay, and Lightworx stay open until 7pm to welcome you in with new exhibitions and talks in what is becoming Queenstown’s inner city art hub.

Based around Earl Street and Marine Parade, the event is fun and family-friendly. First Thursdays is also a great way to arrange a catch up with mates while seeing what’s new at the galleries and enjoying a complimentary glass of our region’s finest, thanks to award-winning Akarua wines. Plan your own route and spend as long or as little as you like… see a couple of galleries, hit the bars for a cocktail, then head back to finish off the art crawl. Maps are available at the participating galleries and on the First Thursdays Queenstown instagram (@firstthursdaysqt) and facebook pages.

For October Starkwhite presents Fiona Pardington: Objects of Desire. This exhibition offers a deep dive into some of the artist’s most acclaimed images from her ongoing still life series, alongside others that have been rarely seen. One of the main genres of Western art history, still life’s depiction of earthly pleasure combined with the fleetingness

of life match perfectly with the intertwining of dark and light, menace and redemption, beauty and loss, that runs through Pardington’s photography. Accompanying these images are new works of huia pair and a Harrier Tail by the same artist.

At Artbay a new exhibition by Libby McColl opens on the night in their front room. McColl’s spontaneous and versatile technique creates works inspired by rural New Zealand, her paintings nostalgic for a shared experience of other times. This exhibition presents new work of the Otago region. Romer Gallery also offers a work deeply rooted in place, a new photograph of Sam Summers Hut. Standing for nearly 100 years and bearing witness to the Whakatipu region’s gold rush, the hut was built by prospector Sam Summers and sits high in the bush beside a waterfall on the Mt Crichton Loop track.

At Lightworks, a new collection by Max Patté will be on display during First Thursdays. Combining LED lights with strong zones of colour, Patté’s instantly recognisable circular sculptures explore the infinite qualities of light while altering the space in which the work is viewed and shifting viewers’ relationship to the space. Milford Galleries presents Zelandia, a solo exhibition by painter Peter James Smith. Combining images of the land overlaid with data, text, references, and graffiti, the former professor of mathematics and art offers charged canvases exploring both abstract languages.

Charlie Chaplin’s silent classics coming to a stage near you

Arrowtown will host the Silent Movies Live during the October school holidays.

Charlie Chaplin’s A Dog’s Life and The Kid will screen in Arrowtown and Wanaka – each film will be accompanied with an improvised soundtrack by talented musicians Jeremy Fitzsimons and David Selfe.

They’re suitable for all ages and guaranteed to have you laughing. David Selfe, who was the Musical Director at Pacific Entertainment for 12 years, discusses the re-emergence of older films, “Everybody laughs – Charlie Chaplin is Charlie Chaplin, it’s hard not to laugh.

I think the younger generation are really discovering him again with us.” David will play the piano and compose the music, while Jeremy will take care of percussion at the event.

The first movie on the agenda, A Dog’s Life, was released in 1918. It tells the story of how Scraps (the dog) helps Charlie – jobless and down on his luck, and Edna, Charlie’s love interest, towards a better life. After a short intermission,

The Kid will play, which was the second-highest grossing film in 1921. It’s considered to be one of the greatest films of the silent era and is about a tramp (Chaplin), who discovers an orphan and brings him up. It’s a good mix of comedy and drama.

The idea to bring silent movies on tour was sparked off the back of Covid by David. He was in conversation with councillors in the North Island about how they could create something to encourage public attendance back in theatres after Covid.

“It’s been hard for anybody to consider the possibility of people not going to theatres. We got permission to write this music so that it would be accessible and we tried not to make it sound old, because originally when they were released silently to movies, it was very much down to the piano player to revitalise the atmosphere. So, that’s what we did – instead of just doing it for piano, we’re doing it for percussion, too. Jeremy is an excellent percussionist – every time Charlie Chaplin whacks a pole with his hand, it’s a clunk of the pipe, or if there’s a load of rubble landing, he shakes a bucket of rocks. It’s very tight,” says David.

They got pretty creative with the soundtrack, too. There’s a scene in A Dog’s Life where a woman is singing a sad song. Rather than just playing piano, David came up with a quirky alternative.

“I said to Jeremy, ‘I can play it on the piano myself, but why don’t we do something different?’ So I wrote a piece for the musical saw, which is a real saw with teeth – you could cut a tree down with it. We raided the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra instrument locker and they kindly lent it to us. Jeremy plays it with a violin bow and he gets a pitch out of it, which is the most eerie sound you’ve ever heard. It’s such fun, and it sounds brilliant. That kind of innovation is what makes the show really interesting,” says David.

The silent movies will be playing at Lake Wanaka Centre on the 10th and Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall on the 11th of October – entry is free for those under 18. You can find out more information and purchase tickets at: eventbrite.co.nz/e/silent-movies-live-arrowtown-tickets-387180817247

SHEEP COULD FLY DUE TO QUEENSTOWN’S ZONING ISSUES

One of the last issues that outgoing mayor Jim Boult wants to highlight is the zoning issues in Queenstown, which are still based on boundaries from the 90s. As a result, hundreds of residents are unable to apply for the government’s Accommodation Supplement as their homes are classed as farmland. Boult is lending his name to a local campaign, #peepsnotsheeps, along with Andrew Wilson of the Queenstown Salvation Army, Southland MP Joseph Mooney and QLDC councillor Niki Gladding. They’re encouraging people to sign and share a petition for Parliament to review and properly classify the urban land in Queenstown. The petition has gained traction resulting over 150 signatures, however they’re looking for 500 plus – if this goal is achieved by Tuesday, Boult has committed to skydive. Since he was first elected in 2016, Boult has been continuously asking the government to review the Accommodation Supplement, he describes as “ridiculous”, which was first devised in 1992 when Lake Hayes Estate, Shotover Country and Hanley’s Farm did not exist. Today, these areas are still classified as farmland as far as the Accommodation Supplement is concerned, meaning this affects the financial aid of approximately 700 residents. “Those areas are where the majority of young families live and would benefit most from this. What existed in 1992 has zero relevance for what we have now,” says Boult. Families with one or more children living in zones classed as urban areas such as Frankton, Queenstown, Fernhill and Arrowtown are able to access up to $305 a week, and a single person can claim up to $165. Anyone living in areas classed as farmland can’t claim even half those amounts.

When the group of four launched the petition, they wanted to create some hype and get people’s attention, so they’ve worked with a PR agency to come up with a challenge – this is where the idea of skydiving was sparked. “It’s a little bit light-hearted, but it’s just to get some awareness of the petition and give government a good-natured dig in the ribs,” says Boult.

The petition will request that the House of Representatives reviews a clause in the Social Security Act 2018 to amend area boundaries and base eligibility for the Accommodation Supplement on the most recent population statistics. Boult has noted that local social services are seeing negative impacts on wellbeing as a result of the current zoning. “At a time of rising living costs, it is simply not acceptable that folk who really need financial assistance are unable to get it because of 30-year-old data.”

If the skydive goes ahead, Boult will be jumping out of a plane dressed as a sheep alongside Wilson and Mooney. “In keeping with the campaign theme I’ll be wearing a sheep costume but, to the possible disappointment of a few folk, I’ll also be wearing a parachute.”

The skydive will take place over Hanley’s Farm “to make the point that this is not a farm, it is a built-up area, and sheep have no part in being there anymore.”

You can get on board and sign the petition here parliament.nz/en/petitions/sign/ PET_126092

THE WAY OF THE FUTURE... FROM HALO TO ODD SAINT

Future Hospitality Group owners Bert Haines, James Ace and Matt Tobin aren’t resting on their laurels now that open borders have business cranking again.

The successful trio are launching into their sixth venue - Odd Saint, a café and restaurant due to open in November in Camp Street on the Halo Café site.

Long-time Halo owners and operators Bruce and Claire Gourlay are hanging up their aprons after some 25 years in the hospitality business, planning to enjoy some R&R, and head off to see some more of the world.

For Future Hospitality Group it’s a prime opportunity to break into new ground on a prime, sunny, downtown site.

“We’re really excited and pumped,” says Bert. “We will keep it as a breakfast and lunch café until 3pm or 4pm, but expand that concept into dinner service as well, staying open until 9pm or 10pm, as soon as possible.” The focus will be fun and family friendly, mid-level and approachable. “We’ll be continuing the same strong breakfast and lunch focus that Halo was known for, but we will be developing a breakfast that’s a little different, not your typical offering.” The menu will tap into different cuisines and cultures, similar to the Margo’s style.

The food will have its own unique stamp, combining a wide ranging global influence that will reflect the skill set of executive chef and co-owner Matt, and his multicultural kitchen brigade. “Matt’s a very collaborative guy and we have such a multicultural team of chefs – from the Philippines, Chile, Mexico, England, Australia and the US, and that will be reflected in Matt’s Odd Saint menu,” says Bert. “Matt’s super progressive. He, and his wife, Jamie, who is coming on board to run the front of house operations, are off back home to the States for a holiday in November and already have a list of all the new and exciting restaurants they want to visit as research.”

Odd Saint, christened with “a little nod to the next-door church” (St Peter’s), will offer a mix of interesting food and flavours, which Matt already excels in at Future Hospitality’s popular, high energy Mexican Mall restaurant, Margo’s. “He’s creating his own version and new twist on that,” says Bert. Each of Matt’s chefs will bring their unique cultural flavours to the menu. “They’ll all be using their different skills to pull together and build on the classics.” Matt’s always been passionate about tapping into great seasonal produce, says Bert. “Sometimes he comes up with dishes at Margo’s that blow me away, but they always turn out to be top sellers.” Bert says they’re “super lucky” to have scored a couple more really good chefs, despite the current staffing shortages being experienced nationally.

Future Hospitality will do some small renovations inside the Halo Café, allowing for a little more seating, and those will get underway soon, now that Halo has closed.

Odd Saint will bring a more café-restaurant style to Future Hospitality Group’s existing stable of five – Margo’s, Little Mez, Little Blackwood, Minus 5º Ice Bar and Queenstown Ice Bar.

Short-staffed Queenstown businesses prepare to welcome all tourists this summer

Tourists in Queenstown arrived before the workers did this winterputting businesses on high alert.

Businesses do not want history to repeat for the summer months - with staff already in the resort town taking their pick of the best pay and conditions to suit them.

There has been excitement and trepidation in Queenstown as Aotearoa prepares to roll out the welcome mat to all tourists this summer.

Republic Hospitality operates 10 bars and restaurants and a recruitment company in Queenstown.

Its human resources manager Eilís Fenton said they needed all the staff they could get.

“Honestly, we can’t have enough. Hopefully we’re in for a phenomenal summer season and especially as we do a workforce side of it as well, we have a huge amount.

“But I suppose the biggest one is we could take on another 60 staff easily and just be tipping along.”

She remained optimistic the workers would arrive in time.

“I do see there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. I’ve had working holiday visas coming through, we’re an accredited workforce. We’ll find out how easy it is to actually get people in.”

just throwing things at everybody in order for them to get working and then them not actually having the abilities to do it at the standard we need.

“I think everybody’s just deciding what that’s going to be for summer and where to sort of start.”

Erik’s Fish and Chips usually operates in Wānaka and Queenstown, but had to close the Wānaka food truck because there were not enough staff.

Owner Anna Arndt has been advertising flat stick since March, and she only wanted three more staff for the summer.

“It’s scary and it’s scary cause the winter has been so busy.

“Look, don’t get me wrong, it’s great. The Australians have come back here in force and Australians love fish and chips so we’ve been really busy, and that’s wonderful. But I just do need some more staff.”

Even adding three more staff would not be enough to reopen in Wānaka.

Eilís wanted to see more New Zealand advertised more overseas, saying we were were falling behind.

“Australia tourism is advertised everywhere, I was in Ireland and I was in the UK, bus stops, on the radio, on television, and there was nothing for New Zealand.

“We weren’t even there and people just keep saying to us ‘oh, I didn’t know you guys were open yet. When do you open?’.”

Yonder and The World Bar have cut back their opening hours and some meal services due to staff shortages.

Jodi Cordell runs Yonder, and said they needed another 30 to 40 staff to run both businesses full-time.

“If we want to go full-time - so that would be seven days and then open right from 7am to 2am for Yonder and then 12pm to 3-4am for The World Bar - it would probably be for Yonder kitchen alone needs double the amount of staff it’s got right now.

“So probably about seven or eight chefs are needed in probably both kitchens to make that function as a restaurant.”

She was hopeful more working holiday visa holders from further afield including America and England would start applying.

Businesses had to think outside the box more when they were looking to attract staff, she said.

“Every business is trying to come up with their own sort of incentive plan in order to sort of pull people in. It’s just trying to do it within reason, not

Arndt was now grappling with what summer would look like if she could not get workers.

“I’ll have to work a hell of a lot and, well, we’ll just have to close at different times. We’re not open for as long hours. We closed for six days at the beginning of September, just to give the staff a break because everyone has worked so hard. We have still managed to be open for seven days so hopefully we can still do that.”

Arndt has sponsored a few workers from overseas, but a few staff were also moving on ahead of summer - and she also started a bonus system a few months ago.

“So if we hit budget each week, depending on how much we are over budget, they get at least an extra dollar an hour, and then just trying to organise lots of fun activities for them to do.

“I like try and trade fish and chips with something so we might take the staff iFlying or go for a jetboat ride or do something.”

The Ministry of Social Development, Hospitality New Zealand and Go With Tourism are collaborating to create recruitment events in Wānaka and Queenstown.

The ministry’s southern regional commissioner, Steph Voight, said they were focused on encouraging winter workers to stick around.

“These are people already in the area, have accommodation which can be one of the biggest barriers for people looking for work in this area. Basically we’re looking to do whatever we can partner up with industry and help to address the challenges we are seeing in this labour market.”
