Do not make your vote uninformed It’s a tough gig. Thankless and underpaid springs to mind. We can’t do anything about the underpaid bit, that is a formula spat out by the local government ministry. Population equals payrate regardless of the actual workloads. The thankless part, we can do something about. Starting right here with a big fat THANK YOU. There are plenty of good people putting their hands up to represent us ratepayers on the QLDC. From the outside looking in, why would you enter the complicated world of local government? An underpaid, practically voluntary role, thankless to the point you are ruthlessly criticised for every move you make. Think about that when you see those smiling billboard faces. These people want this gig. For those with their heads in the moment, to represent us on QLDC, the opportunity to make a difference is huge. That’s why they are out there courting our votes. Ordinary people can sit at the Board Table of the biggest business in town. Money comes in and money goes out and the decisions you make influence everyone living and visiting this dynamic district. It’s a big responsibility spending ratepayer money. Believe me, I was there, it should never be taken lightly. We, the ratepayers, are the ones putting the money in and we want it well spent. That QLDC Board Table sets the tone for us all, facilitating, creating, improving. Those ratepayer dollars are spread across every aspect of life in the Whakatipu. Do not make your vote uninformed. As voters we have the easy job, hire the right people to lead us forward simply by ticking a box. Of course, knowing who they are helps. A little bit of due diligence isn’t too much to ask, is it? If your answer is “can’t be bothered” then forever hold your tongue. Keyboard warriors stand down. I “met the candidates” for Mayor in Arrowtown last week. Not a complete idiot amongst them. I was impressed. Differing views on what is right and wrong with QLDC and what they will do about it. In my opinion, good honest intelligent willing people. We are going to get a potentially great new leader of our district if we give them half a chance. The question is who? What I love about this community is we have people who really care. The people smiling back at you on those billboards. But is caring enough? We need people people, willing and able to engage and work with all comers. Supporters of the huge team at QLDC, our community associations, business networks, sporting organisations, every kind of special interest groups you can imagine. QLDC touches everything and as a positive person I want an enabler and improver of the place we call home at that Council table. Thank you to all the candidates for Council and Mayor for caring about the future of our District. I’ll do my bit. Get to know you, learn about your vision, and tick the boxes when our time comes to vote.

OPINION Time to mobilise over staff shortages by David Gibbs, Queenstown Media Group
Summer is coming and at this rate the jobs crisis will still be here without some out-of-the-box thinking.
The slow return can be partially attributed to the cost of getting here, with incredibly expensive flights and decreased airline schedules, but we really need to do more.

NZ did an extraordinary job on promoting our initial response to Covid but, so far, we appear to have done a terrible job of telling everyone the red carpet has been rolled out for working holiday visitors and others who want to work here. Or even holding on to the staff we have.

Thisrepatriated.isacrisis of a similar magnitude, especially for the mental health of our workforce, owners, managers and staff working double shifts and long hours. It can’t go on for much longer and desperate measures are required. How about holding a Queenstown jobs crisis forum, involving INZ, Queenstown Lakes District Council, Destination Queenstown, the Chamber of Commerce, and businesses, to hammer out some solutions for the region. How about organising large expos in Europe and South America to attract workers. How about secured accommodation options for overseas workers. Just some ideas.
Queenstown
Make no mistake, Queenstown businesses are in crisis. While tourism numbers are firing back up, the town has what could be described as an economic case of long Covid.
Immigration NZ waxes lyrical about the new system and how many visas are being processed but the proof is in how many can get here or when they get here. Very few have actually arrived!!
Overseas visitor arrivals to New Zealand across April, May, and June (Q2) were about 22% of those in the same period in 2019, before the pandemic hit.
Businesses simply do not have enough staff, leading to symptoms of burnout, reduced opening hours, a diminished experience for many visitors, and, ultimately, millions in potential revenue left in their pockets.
While Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington also have staffing problems, it’s nothing compared to our experience. And, aside from our local MP Joseph Mooney, I suspect few other politicians understand, or care, about how serious the problem is in the country’s tourism capital, or the knock on implications.
It’s easy to point at Wellington and say ‘you should do more’, and they should. But, I believe we also need to do more locally, taking the same approach as when the pandemic hit. Local politicians and organisations came together to prevent a humanitarian crisis for the overseas workers who could get home, but had no income, while INZ and travel industry reps worked to get them
Waipounamu
However, departure numbers of non-NZ passports were about 40% of that same period. Many will have been part of the country’s migrant workforce, returning home or seduced by better options in other countries, such as WeAustralia.arein a global fight for staff and losing badly.
Because no one has any idea when things will improve and the mismatch between demand and staffing is a nightmare for both owners, managers, frontline workers and also the Queenstown brand. If the feedback I hear on the streets and comments from our guests is anything to go by, it’s only when visitors actually get here they appreciate the magnitude of the issue.

The students from all years signed up to help with a range of activities including mulching and weeding with The Friends of Tucker Beach, planting preparation for The Wakatipu Reforestation Trust, baking for Kiwi Harvest, helping run activities and engaging with the littlies at the Plunket playgroup, supporting the work at Orphans Aid International and helping prepare and decorate the hall for Queenstown Primary School’s quiz - their biggest fundraiser of the year. Activities were coordinated by Volunteer South’s, Neha Gosalia, who joined the team recently. “I used to teach, so I really value the commitment of these young volunteers and love their enthusiasm for sharing their time with their community. Students from Wakatipu High School decided to put their day off to good use last week as they volunteered their time and energy to support six local non-profit organisations on their teacher only day. Last Friday nearly thirty students decided to spend a chunk of their day supporting their community through a partnership between the school and Volunteer SouthCentral Lakes. “This is the second time we’ve run the initiative and it proved to be a wonderful way for students to try something new and support their community through active citizenship.” said Associate Principal Oded Nathan. “It’s really nice to see students giving back to the community that gives so much to the school and its students, and we look forward to seeing more students involved with these community service days in the future.”
“The girls have been a massive help this morning. The girls have achieved a huge amount and saved us a lot of preparation time which has been so appreciated.” said Belinda, Plunket’s Community Service Coordinator. “I like to give back and it’s been great meeting new people, the mums and their kids. It’s a really welcoming group and I’ve really enjoyed helping the little ones.” said Mikayle who is in year 11.

“It’s been frustrating,” King says, “but really there are two takes on it.
“This year was a record breaker though, in terms of numbers, events, atmosphere, businesses involved, so we’ll be back, 100%.”

“And people who I know really well, who I trust to be critical, say from their perspective it has been seamless and well organised.”
The Chamber and business leaders need to come up with a creative solution, because the Government’s not going to solve it for them. Immigration can solve it to a point, but that’s only part of it.”
“The support for Pride has been so visible, you can see the police station [which was lit up with rainbow colours] as an example of that. Everybody has been so friendly and the atmosphere was electric. Fantastic.
Fortunately, Pride sponsor RealNZ stepped in, providing a bus and driver so the tour could go ahead. As one festival wraps, another is about to hit Queenstown with the force of an avalanche.
Queenstown has partied its way through another Winter Pride, but not without some struggles.
“Everyone is buzzing, it’s just been incredible,” he says.
Still, Winter Pride is definitely a goer for next year. “I’ve already got people asking me for the dates and I’m like, ‘get off my case, we’ve not finished this one yet’, jokes King, speaking on Sunday.
“As a festival organiser, what worries me more than the current state, is there’s no solution on the table, no future state Queenstown is aiming for.
Nolan says they’ve scheduled to fill the lull after Winter Pride, creating another spike in bed nights, and spread the love across town with miniparties at the AJ Hackett Bungy Dome, Canyon Brewing and elsewhere, and by working with adventure tourism operators. The first Snow Machine was held in Hakuba, Japan, in 2020, but the “I really think there’s a big reputational risk for Queenstown,” he says.
The largest LGBTTQI+ festival in the Southern Hemisphere drew to a close on Sunday after 10 days of on-mountain and off-mountain fun. Festival director and co-owner Marty King says there was “next level” support and engagement from the local community and businesses, while feedback from attendees has been phenomenal.
Winter Pride feels the warmth by Paul Taylor
“One is that businesses we work with directly, like Republic Hospitality, with Winnies and Sundeck, or Lone Star, SkyCity, they’ve thrown themselves at us, really pulled together and pulled people left, right and centre to make it work. That’s been phenomenal, the culture and the support.
King says a team of 90 crew, volunteers and performers worked to deliver dozens of events, supported by hundreds of contractors, such as TomTom Productions, and staff employed by the ski fields, bars, restaurants and Butvenues.Queenstown’s staffing crunch has had an impact.
A whopping 5000 people will descend on the town from Tuesday for Snow Machine, a fourday multi-venue music festival. The festival, with a line-up featuring The Avalanches, Ball Park Music, Bliss N Eso, Client Liaison, Fat Freddy’s Drop and a host of other acts, will have stages at The Remarkables, Coronet Peak, and downtown, with the main après ski stage on Queenstown Primary school Attendees, grounds. 80% from Australia, are paying from $700 to $1500 for packages including festival passes, five nights of accommodation and four-day lift passes, with other add-ons such as flights, lessons and transfers available.
It’s four days and three enormous nights says festival director Quentin Nolan, who owns the event with business partner Chris Murray. “We’ve got great numbers, we hit our limit and sold out the event,” he says. “It’s a destination event, so a combination of holiday and music festival, tailored towards mid20s to early 30s.”
Queenstown event will be annual. The aim is to break even in the first year, covering all the set-up costs. Some festival event passes are available to locals Festival director Quentin Nolan
“But other businesses we don’t work with directly but depend on have been frustrating. We had so many airport shuttles not turn up, leaving performers who’d come from the US and Australia waiting there for an hour. No one turns up and we have to send a taxi. “One of our DJs was staying at an expensive hotel and constantly had to chase to get the room cleaned. The rubbish was never removed. I think they just had no staff.” King says he had 20 VIPs booked to go on a wine tour, but received a phone call hours before it was due to leave to say it was cancelled because there weren’t enough drivers.

New roundabout A roundabout is being built on State Highway 6 Kingston Road for access to a new subdivision. Coneburn, now renamed Park Ridge, is the last Special Housing Area approved by the Government for Queenstown before the legislation was repealed. The developerfunded roundabout, near to the Remarkables turn off, will connect the 632-section subdivision and commercial precinct with SH6. It will also provide access to Scope Resources quarry. Civil Construction aim to complete the project by April next year, with speed restrictions and traffic management in place until then. In a separate project, councillors of Thursday approved that some Frankton Golf Course and Queenstown Events Centre land should be annexed for a new intersection to replace the Frankton BP roundabout.
Mayoral hopeful launches tech platform
Queenstown Mayoral candidate Olivia Wensley has partnered with GoVote NZ to launch a new digital voting platform to help enable the voice of communities on key issues in their area, as well as nationally.
The mission is to enable “direct democracy, no filter, no spin, just direct answers to simple questions”, it says on the platform. Visit www. govote.co.nz/queenstownlakes
The first of its kind in New Zealand, the platform enables the likes of local governments, public and private companies, politicians and media companies to post questions in real-time allowing the public to vote and have their say on big issues such as government policy, the economy and health. “As we continue to become increasingly digitised in how we communicate, local government and public consultation have lagged in harnessing digital tools to make these processes easier,” Wensley, who is CEO of Startup Queenstown Lakes, says. “While there is still a place for traditional methods of communication, we are at risk of missing a large portion of our community who prefer to communicate in a digital medium and often from a mobile device.”

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN Page 11 NEWS IN BRIEF Road works Motorists can expect short delays overnight for the next fortnight on various roads across Queenstown Lakes. Night-time work began on Sunday to repair roads damaged by recent weather. Repairs include work on slips, blocked culverts, scouring, damage to water tables, rockfall and surfacing defects. Drivers are asked to build in extra time and take care around road crews and traffic managers. While there are no full closures, stop/go will be in operation and traffic will be reduced to a single lane with pilot vehicles in place to escort through some areas. Those include Jack’s Point to Kingston Road, SH6, where there will be works from 8pm to 5.30am until Wednesday, 7 September. Then, from 11-14 September, on Kawarau Gorge, SH6, from 9pm to 5.30am. Rates rise Ratepayers in Queenstown Lakes are receiving emails and letters setting out how much they’re paying to the council this year. Queenstown Lakes District councillors approved of the expected average increase to rates of 6.5% for 2022-2023 at a full council meeting held online on Thursday, 1 September. Individual rates calculations and payment options were sent out to residents on Friday. On top of the percentage hike, the rates valuation of homes in across the district was updated for the first time in three years late last year. So, with house values at record highs, the vast majority of homeowners will be paying considerably more than last time around. QLDC’s finance boss Stewart Burns said the increase was in line with the forecasts made in the 20222023 Annual Plan. Visit the council’s website at www.qldc.govt.nz/ services/rates-property for more information and answers to frequently asked questions.

If there’s one thing Kiwis know, it’s that we have a beautiful backyard, especially our stunning mountains. The team at Close to Home are taking it upon themselves to showcase the terrain that is off the beaten track and how you can explore it in a sustainable way, through a series of splitboard and ski films. The major project of the series will be filmed this month and is about exploring the Remarkables and going to Lake Hope. They expect to launch it to Queenstown in January of 2023, before entering it in film festivals here and throughout the world. Originally from Wellington and now based in Tāhuna, Ryan Quirke is often the man behind the camera. After getting stuck here throughout Covid, he discovered how vast the snow terrain is in New Zealand, and that there’s more to explore than just the resorts. He believes that Aotearoa is often overlooked in the global skiing and snowboarding conversation, but that we’re actually a world-class destination – especially if you’re willing to put in the hard work and have a different mountain experience.
Catherine delighted audiences last year when she appeared via Zoom due to Covid-19 restrictions. She confided that her new novel would be set deep in Central Otago and we immediately invited her back for the launch. We’re thrilled she has taken up the opportunity, allowing ticket holders to share informal drinks and nibbles with Catherine to celebrate this special occasion.
Until 30 September, we’ll also be offering special earlybird pricing, with $5 off most tickets.
Multi-award-winning author and national treasure Catherine Chidgey will launch her newest novel The Axeman’s Carnival at this year’s Queenstown Writers Festival (11 – 13 November 2022).
Quirke has been a video producer and run his own company for the past ten years. He decided he wanted to use his skills to do more good and has now shifted his focus to this project.
“With the eclectic range of speakers, workshops and events, we are optimistic that there is something for everyone to enjoy.”
NZSHRED and Rab are sponsoring the project and have been instrumental to its getting off the ground. So far the team’s longest adventure was the Maitland Valley which was six days – their goal is to seek out unique places.
She describes the collection of eleven gothic stories as “like what you might expect if Angela Carter had penned some Black Mirror episodes.”
“We are incredibly proud of the 2022 programme, our biggest yet with 15 events over three days.
Human Powered Adventures are never too far away in Te Waipounamu
“We try to promote places that are easily accessible but much less known about, places that you might have to call a farmer for access to. Just unique locations for the content we’ve created throughout the season, and then the main film is about essentially one location, which is holistically the Remarkables range, but specifically exploring the Remarkables more than we ever have. It’s about going to Lake Hope, which is the biggest lake in the range. None of us have ever been there, so it’ll be the furthest we’ve ever gone into the range, and we can do it as a traverse from the ski field all the way across to the south branch of Wye Creek – from one end of the range to the other. It’s a six-day mission that we’re planning to do,” says Quirke. Along with sustainability, the project hopes to help educate people on backcountry safety. It’s something that’s showcased throughout, and they hope in the future education will be more “Somethingaccessible. I’d like to use the platform for as well is educating people on ways they can be safe in the backcountry. Almost mentoring people through videos, if you will, by showing those little things that are important for people to remember, such as doing a transceiver check in the morning before we head out or digging pits and checking snow stability. Just reminding people that even though we’re on these big expeditions, these are little things that you need to remember,” says TheQuirke.journey to Lake Hope and Close to Home film is due out early 2023, you can view the short films, follow the team’s journey, or get involved with the project through the Instagram page @ closetohome.film
On 1 September, we launched the full details of Catherine’s book launch and this year’s festival programme on our website (qtwritersfestival.nz).
“Close to Home is a film aiming to promote getting out and exploring your local mountains in an exciting, safe, and friendly way. This season, we’re filming a series of local expeditions to freeride snowboard- and ski-lands including some iconic classics and others that are seen and ridden by few. Throughout the season, we’re releasing short-form content to help inspire people to get out and do their part to help protect the environment we love. The full film, Close to Home, aims to educate people on climate issues and making better decisions in the way they approach the mountains and the brands they spend their money on,” says Quirke.

Queenstown Writers Festival chairperson Tanya Surrey says the committee is delighted to bring some of New Zealand’s most loved and esteemed writers to Queenstown for our fourth festival.
Also appearing will be popular sustainability advocate Ethically Kate with her new book Better, Bolder, Different, which is full of sustainable living skills and thought-provoking conversations. We’re anticipating a fun and informative interview conducted by Alexa Forbes, an Otago Regional Councillor and one of our best-known local sustainability champions.

The Catalyst Trust is helping set them up in the Wakatipu area. The project stems from work the library has been doing during the past few years to help the Japanese Family Society of Queenstown make its large collection of books more accessible to the community. “Their library was located at Lakeview Camp Ground in town and they had 5000 items, but they were forced to close down because they had to relocate,” says Jess. “They were so organised and meticulous with everything catalogued. It was wonderful.”
Queenstown Writers Festival Reading in your own lingo
It’s an exciting new concept and Te Hau Toka Southern Lakes Wellbeing Trust is providing funding for the books in a variety of languages.
There’s nothing like the comfort that comes from turning the pages of a good book and the team at Frankton Library is working to ensure that’s something that’s readily available to all migrant communities in every language spoken locally.
The purpose-built book cabinets will be placed outside the Frankton Library so they can be accessed at any time. Arrowtown MenzShed is also pitching in with skilled craftsmen volunteers kindly offering their skills to make the six Lilliput Libraries ready to paint and decorate.
If there are enough languages represented then Jess says the Lilliput Libraries, which will be dotted about the gardens outside the library, may be grouped by Continents, like Latin America with its Spanish and Portuguese languages. “We’re asking each group to go back to their community and find us people with creative ability. We will leave it over to each community group to decide how they want their culture to be portrayed Aboutvisually.”$4000 of the $6000 in grant funding awarded to the project will be used to buy books in different languages and the rest to support the Jesslaunch.and her team are holding a community working bee and barbeque on Saturday, November 5, to get the project fully up and running. People are invited to come along and help fit the doors and hinges on the cabinets and rework any design to suit their position in the library gardens. “We’re thinking we will call it Lilliput Lane.” An official launch is likely to be held early next year. Community groups, or artists and designers ,who would like to be involved in this project are asked to contact Jess Payne at the Frankton Library: Email frankton.library@qldc.govt.nz, or phone 03 441
Christchurch-based poet Claudia Jardine and friends will conclude events on a high note with a special Sunday evening open mic poetry session, to which local poets are invited to step up to the Themic. writers will be joined over the weekend by Okham winners Whiti Hereaka and Rebecca K Reilly, broadcaster Noelle McCarthy being interviewed by Invercargill mayoral-hopeful Marcus Lush, Kate de Goldi, Christine Leunens and investigative journalist Stephen Davis. We’re looking forward to seeing you there.
We are also delighted to host another festival favourite, crime writer Paddy Richardson, who will talk about her new book By the Green of the Spring. Set during WWI between Blackball on the West Coast and Somes Island in Wellington Harbour, it traverses the brutal realities of life as an enemy alien and the enduring effects of war. Dame Fiona Kidman described it as “a masterpiece of storytelling.” A feast of poetry fun will wind up the weekend with a presentation of the much-celebrated Rail:Lines: The Film, by poets Liz Breslin, Annabel Wilson and Laura Williamson, focused on their Central Otago “poetry tour like no other” – emissions free, muddy, rowdy and other-worldly. The trio will also perform some of their poems live.

“We’re working with The Catalyst Trust, which is helping set up Lilliput Libraries around the district, says Jess. “Through that trust we’ve been connected with Mitre 10 Mega, which has kindly donated all the materials to build them.”
Frankton Library team leader Jess Payne says Frankton Library is still new, but the staff have been working hard toward building a World Languages Section, usually created through donations and people bringing in books to loan. “It’s always been on our ‘to do’ list to build one,” says Jess. “Then we had an idea to create a series of Lilliput Libraries containing books in various languages outside the library. That way our different migrant communities can swap and share books in their own heritage language.”
This all planted a seed for the World Language Lilliput Libraries at Frankton and Jess says they’re hoping to hold 200 books in different languages outside Frankton Library. Hopefully there will be 50 to 100 books in different languages available in six Lilliput Libraries at any one time. Anyone can swap, borrow or donate books in languages other than English. A much larger World Language Collection will also be available in the 15 libraries across the Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago districts, for those tapping into their library “Queenstownmembership. has a wonderfully diverse community, with people from all corners of the world who call this home. We want to celebrate that and bring people together to create a space to share, learn and celebrate their heritage together,” says Jess. “It’s really important that we support our migrant communities so they can access everything from a good relaxing book to read, to different wellbeing resources. We know there’s a real need.” District council libraries will act as guardians for the Lilliput Libraries. However, the team at the library need help with this special community project. “We’ve been talking to different community groups and reaching out to our migrant communities to encourage them to celebrate their heritage and culture by helping us decorate these Lilliput Libraries,” she says. “We’ve spoken to Japanese, Indian, Chinese, Latina, Brazilian members of our community and they’re all really keen, but we really need people from the various cultures with artistic flair to decorate.”

Research shows us that children are far more creative and open in their thinking than adults, children as young as 5 have a ‘genius’ level of creativity and sadly this deteriorates as they get older.
Let’s look at an example, how many uses do you think a paperclip Mosthas? people would think of around 10 to 15 uses, however Sir Ken Robinson an expert in education showed that there are around 200 uses for a paperclip. A longitudinal study of Kindergarten children measured 98% of children at the genius level of divergent or creative thinking. Five years later when the children were aged 8 to 10 years those genius levels had dropped to 50%. After another 5 years the level had dropped further. Here’s how to open that box and be aware of when you are limiting your thinking. We have neurological filters that help us to make sense of our world and stop us from going into overwhelm. One of those filters is called the generisation filter.

An example of the generalisation filter serving us well comes from my personal experience of hiring a car. I was due to speak at a corporate conference in New Zealand and the organiser sent me an email to say that she’d booked my flights and hired me a car so I could travel to the venue. This car she’d hired was a Hyundai and I’ve never driven this type of car before, yet my generalisation filter kicked in nicely for me. If my generalisation filter hadn’t done that, I would probably have downloaded the driver’s manual for the Hyundai or watched some YouTube videos to understand how to drive this car. All that actually happened was I picked up the car from the airport, programmed the venue details into Google Maps on my phone and off I drove.
We use our generalisation filter all the time to make sense of our world. In the case of this example, it was useful as I could hop into a different make of car to that which I was used to driving and off I went.
Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland
Basically, our generalisation filter allows us to say this looks like that, and so we need to respond in that way. It allows us to compare anything out there that may be new to us and generalise it using an experience we’ve already had. On the whole, it allows us to navigate our world a lot more easily.Thedownside of a generalisation filter is that it can limit our learning. Have you ever been researching how to do something online or been on a course and compared what you’re reading or hearing to something else you have done before?

A way forward to help whales
Whilescenario.our results do not predict an overall reduction in suitable habitat that would lead to local extinctions, the latitudinal range shifts are nevertheless bound to have important ecological consequences for New Zealand’s marine ecosystems and the people who depend on them.
the impact of warming oceans on whale distribution is an additional stress factor on ecosystems already under pressure from wider threats, including acidification, pollution and over-exploitation.
Warming oceans may force New Zealand’s sperm and blue whales to shift to cooler southern waters
These differences in feeding habits lead to divergent responses to ocean warming. Blue whales show a more distinct southerly shift than sperm whales, particularly in the worst-case scenario, likely because they feed at the surface where ocean warming will be more exacerbated than in the deep sea. Both species have important foraging grounds off New Zealand which may be compromised in the future. Sperm whales are currently occurring regularly off Kaikō ura, while blue whales forage in the South Taranaki Bight. Despite these ecological differences, our results show that some future suitable areas around the South Island and offshore islands are common to both species. These regions could be considered sanctuaries for both species to retreat to or expand their habitat in a warming world. This should warrant increased protection of these areas.
Computing the fate of whales
Projected change in habitat suitability by 2100, for sperm (left panels) and blue (right panels) whales under two IPCC climate scenarios: modest mitigation (RCP4.5) and no mitigation (RCP8.5). Percentages are expressed as relative to each species’ presentday distribution. Author provided
Ultimately,sinks.
Our projections suggest current habitats in the ocean around the North Island may become unsuitable if seasurface temperatures continue to rise. These range shifts become even stronger with increasing severity of climate change. For sperm whales, which are currently abundant off Kaikō ura where they support ecotourism businesses, the predicted distribution changes are even more evident than for blue whales, depending on the climate change
Data on the local abundance of both whales species are deficient, but modelling provides a powerful tool to predict how their range is likely to shift. We used a combination of mathematical models (known as correlative species distribution models) to predict the future range shifts of these whale species as a response to three future climate change scenarios of differing severity, as outlined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). We applied these models, using the whales’ present distributions, to build a set of environmental “rules” that dictate where each species can live.

Sperm whales are the largest toothed whales (odontocetes) and deep-diving apex predators. They primarily feed on squid and fish that live near the bottom of the sea. Blue whales are baleen whales (mysticetes) and filter small organisms from the water. They feed at the surface on zooplankton, particularly dense krill schools along coastlines where cold water from the deep ocean rises toward the surface (so-called upwelling areas).

This is very important because phytoplankton contributes about half of all oxygen to the atmosphere and also captures about 40% of all released carbon dioxide. By helping the growth of phytoplankton, whales indirectly contribute to the natural ocean carbon sink. On top of this, each great whale accumulates about 33 tonnes of carbon dioxide in their body, which they take to the ocean floor when they die and their carcass
Using climate-dependent data such as sea-surface temperature and chlorophyll A (a measure of phytoplankton growth), as well as static data such as water depth and distance to shore, we applied these rules to forecast future habitat suitability. We chose a scenario of “modest” response to cutting greenhouse gas emissions (the IPCC’s mitigation strategy RCP4.5), which is the most likely given the current policies, and a worst-case scenario (no policy to cut emissions, RCP8.5), assuming the reality will likely be somewhere between the two.
The world’s oceans are absorbing more than 90% of the excess heat and energy generated by rising greenhouse gas emissions. But, as the oceans keep warming, rising sea temperatures generate unprecedented cascading effects that include the melting of polar ice, rising seas, marine heatwaves and ocean acidification. This in turn has profound impacts on marine biodiversity and the lives and livelihoods of coastal communities, especially in island nations such as New InZealand.ourlatest research, we focused on great whales – sperm and blue whales in particular. They are crucial for maintaining healthy marine ecosystems, but have limited options to respond to climate change: either adapt, die, or move to stay within optimal habitats. We used mathematical models to predict how they are likely to respond to warming seas by the end of the century. Our results show a clear southward shift for both species, mostly driven by rising temperatures at the sea surface.
How whales maintain ecosystems Great whales are marine ecosystem engineers. They modify their habitats (or create new ones), to suit their needs. In fact, these activities create conditions that other species rely on to survive. They engineer their environment on several fronts. By feeding in one place and releasing their faeces in another, whales convey minerals and other nutrients such as nitrogen and iron from the deep water to the surface, as well as across regions. This process, known as a “whale pump”, makes these nutrients available for phytoplankton and other organisms to grow.

Race Director Keegan McCauley says he is delighted to see the event, now in its eighth year of running, continue to go from strength to strength.
“Queenstown is one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand and home to one of the most scenic marathons in the world. The destination coupled with the unrivalled athlete experience continues to make the Queenstown Marathon an event runners and walkers want to be a part of.
“The fact that the half marathon has sold out every year since the Queenstown Marathon’s inception in 2014 is testament to that.” There are limited spaces remaining in the New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Marathon and 10km, and McCauley is encouraging those thinking about entering the 2022 Queenstown Marathon to get in quick before those distances sell out.
“The way entries are tracking we anticipate spaces for the marathon and 10km won’t stay open for much longer, so make sure you get your registration in quickly to confirm your spot on the start line and get yourself ready for a weekend in Queenstown like no other,” McCauley says. Queenstown half marathon sells out by Paul Taylor
With less than three months left to go until the return of the Queenstown Marathon, organisers have announced the popular half marathon event has already sold out. The marathon will return to the trails of Queenstown on 19 November, 2022, for the first time since 2020 after Covid restrictions forced the event’s cancellation last year.

by Staff Reporter TROND JOHANSSON
In 2005, with their Mall building being redeveloped, they moved into what would become an iconic central Queenstown location, on the bright and sunny corner of O’Connells TheMall.
“It felt like coming home, in a way, with the scenery, the mountains, the snow, skiing and sailing. Two of my great loves in one Heplace.”worked as a jeweller in Queenstown and in the process met wife Anna. After marrying in 1999 they settled into Queenstown life, raising daughter Grete (born in 2000) and son Jack Sailing(2003). was still on the agenda, racing in business house race series on Lake Wakatipu in Farr 1020’s and Etchells, and skiing at Coronet Peak.
As a youngster growing up in Sweden, a tousle haired Trond Johansson was much the same as any other teenager. He was born in southern Sweden, to a Swedish father and Norwegian mother. He’d cross country skied since he could walk, was into boats and sailing, and as the middle of three brothers in an area renowned for its glass blowing, life was Sogood.was it a creative streak or something else that led him to apply for a place in the Swedish Jeweller’s School at the age of 16? “I went to talk to jewellers and they seemed like cool people, so I just did it,” he says in a matterof-fact way. After graduating as a jeweller in 1970, and then as a Master Jeweller in 1973, he worked in Sweden until 1975 before leaving by sailboat to discover the Fastworld.forward three years and he arrived in a tiny sailing boat to work in Australia, in the days when the journey was as important as the destination. And as many have done before and since, he came to New Zealand for a holiday and never left. Arriving in Auckland at the age of 27, after seven years as an employee he started his own business, building a team of jewellers who worked for him designing and making his own range of jewellery. He marketed and sold these around New Zealand as well as exporting to 15 countries around the world, including the US. The years of travel paid Tooff.this day, he’s always been as much in love with the jewellery-making process as the rewards. “There’s so many facets to working in the jewellery industry and I’ve been involved with most,” he says. “There’s always something new to learn and you make nice things for nice people.

And let’s not underestimate the power of The Lord of the Rings. Peter Jackson filmed in Queenstown and launched an industry or three. After the first movie launched in December 2001, film locations were a ‘must do’ on visitor lists. With the movies came the merchandise, and Trond’s delighted to stock a full range of LoR jewellery more than 20 years later, well made and still attracting legions of fans. “I wouldn’t have it in the store if it wasn’t well made, but it’s a certain style that people like and you’d be amazed how much we sell online and to visiting groups, two decades later.”
And then came the opportunity they’d been waiting for, buying well-respected business Goldfields Jewellers in the Queenstown Mall from long-time locals Dave and Judith Cleghorn in 2001. Like everyone else, they watched in horror 11 days after signing up to buy the business as the Twin Towers fell in New York.
The Cleghorns had owned and run the business for 20 years, concentrating purely on the visitor Somarket.itwas that Trond’s reputation as a Master Jeweller saw him build up an impressive clientele of loyal locals and visitors.
last few years have been tough, as the redevelopment of that building followed by Covid19 saw them move to temporary premises in lower Beach Street. But it was locals who kept them going, and for that Trond couldn’t be more grateful.
“Support from locals and people from around New Zealand over the last two years has been fantastic,” he says. “I’ve never made so many wedding and engagement rings in my life, and people have come out of the woodwork, having raided the family jewellery boxes, with pieces they’d like re-worked into more modern “We’veinterpretations.justcome full circle, moving back into the Queenstown Mall opposite where we started out 21 years ago. And now it’s time for a 21st anniversary celebration.”
“I work with beautiful metals and stunning stones. When you’ve created the final piece you get a hug and a kiss from a lovely lady and the husband pays the bill for working with something you love,” he says, tongue firmly in cheek. “How hard can it be?” So what brought him to Queenstown from the city of sails? “I used to come here for business and after my doctor told me it was probably time to slow down a bit, I decided to get off the road, put down roots and move to this lovely place to live.
“You’d be surprised by the number of people who come to Queenstown to propose to the love of their life, deciding that they must get an engagement, wedding ring, or both, made locally to celebrate the occasion,” says Trond. “It’s a huge part of our business creating bespoke designs that stay in their family for years.”
“We could not have been more transparent,” Duxson says. Duxson says residents have been asking for answers from CAIL for two years.
Sustainable Tarras has accused Christchurch Airport Ltd of greenwashing as it plans a new jet airport in the small Central Otago farming settlement. The community group last week released the first in a series of short videos about the plans for the airport, which would accommodate widebody jets and rival Queenstown Airport.
“They haven’t held a public meeting in Tarras in over 520 days, preferring to engage only with carefully selected individuals or groups. They won’t engage with us directly or openly. Clearly, we are frustrated.” Scan the QR code to watch The Central Otago Airport Files. Episode 1: Climate Positive or Greenwash Spin? on YouTube

Christchurch Airport Ltd (CIAL) has already bought 750 hectares of land in SustainableTarras.
Duxson says CAIL “doesn’t acknowledge that huge emissions increases will come from a new airport and increased demand. They are also silent on construction emissions, airport community emissions and all other enabled Duxsonemissions”.also says CAIL’s claims of a low carbon future for aviation are “unsubstantiated and premature”.
“We’ve worked hard to become a recognised global leader in decarbonisation and are now assisting businesses around the world who’ve requested our support to transition too. “As we have said all along, like any other development in New Zealand, if the airport is to proceed, it will need to occur within the country’s emission reduction and adaptation frameworks.” That’s irked Sustainable Tarras, who say every fact or claim in their video was carefully researched and references were published.
CIAL initially refused to be drawn into a media debate on the issue but then released a short statement to The Wānaka App saying the claims are “illinformed” and its carbon emissions are independently audited.

Tarras deputy chair Marilyn Duxson says the video outlines concerns about CAIL’s approach to calculating and reporting on carbon emissions, and its claims Christchurch Airport is ‘climate positive’. Duxson says it excludes over 99% of the emissions an airport enables, including all flights. Instead, those emissions are seen to be the responsibility of the airlines. Other airports in NZ, including Queenstown, take a similar approach.

Art Exhibition Seung Yul Oh – New Work Artist Seung Yul Oh has created an instantly recognisable and idiosyncratic practice combining elements of East Asian popular culture with ironic references to high Western art history. Oh’s sculptural practice has long sustained an intense dialogue between artist and material. Running parallel to his whimsical sculptures is his painting, a formal and often minimalist practice. This body of work often highlights the margins, extending audiences’ focus to the edges, or periphery, of the canvas and offering skillful distortions of perspective and balance.

Who should be Queenstown Lakes’ next mayor? With locals due to go to the polls in early October, we’re asking the six candidates for their opinions on the major issues facing the district. We’ll run the answers over the next five weeks. Here’s the first: What should Queenstown Lakes District’s workforce look like? Should businesses rely on migrant workers? What can be done to solve the staff crunch?
Our region is not the same as the rest of the country and we need Visa settings that are appropriate. We rely on migrant workers and cannot expect local businesses to hire kiwis.
As Mayor I will take this Economic Development work to the next level, as it’s vital for our recovery.

We need to urgently address housing issues so staff can afford to live here. That’s the #1 reason for the staff Longcrunch.term,
I’d like to see our region have higher productivity jobs. Our wage is below the national average, but our region is very unaffordable to live in. We need to fix this balance.
LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN Page 28
I want to create higher value jobs in industries outside of tourism - expanding on the work I have done to date as CEO of Startup Queenstown Lakes.
*Candidate Daniel Shand did not respond to phone calls, text messages or email.
Self-employed Regions don’t want to rely on migrant workers. However, the reality for our region is that we need migrant workers especially with the current staff-shortage. The hospitality industry needs our support and our visitors deserve an exceptional Queenstown-Lakes experience. We can improve the situation for workers through education and upskilling via flexible/distance/ remote learning.
Glyn Lewers Age: Occupation:44 Structural Engineer, Current QLDC Councillor, Board member of Destination Queenstown and Startup Queenstown Lakes. The Queenstown Lakes District workforce should be a reflection of its community. It will always be a mix of permanent residents and temporary visitors; the key is to realise the talents of both groups as effectively as we can. In my experience of hiring employees, we gear towards finding local talent first, especially those with community links. It is not easy at times. Issues such as housing and transport are barriers to successful recruiting.

I have been frustrated with the current Visa settings - our economy is suffering because of a lack of workers. I met with the Minister of Immigration to address it.
Alistair Angus Age: over TheOccupation:64RetiredLakesdistrict workforce was made up primarily from kids on their OE. They were largely able to work for peanuts because parents topped up their cash. This has by and large ceased to be the case. The businesses that are currently paying decent wages have little or no problem retaining staff. The reality is there has basically been a 20yr wage freeze, it’s time to have a little catch up.
Neeta Shetty Age: Occupation:48
I believe businesses should have the choice of employing workers outside our area far more straightforward than the regulatory barriers allow, especially if companies have exhausted all avenues to find local talent. The staff crunch is a global problem; I believe they will return, but we as a community must solve our worker accommodation shortage and deliver effective transport solutions.
Jon Mitchell Age: Occupation:58 Director, board chair, board member My vision is for a local workforce that relies more on locally resident talent and less on visiting workers, in an increasingly diverse range of thriving commercial and social enterprises. We need to: • manage-down pre-COVID masstourism growth rates • smooth demand across the year –events and conferences in shoulder seasons • build on COVID-crisis staffing innovations • constructively influence the government to introduce fit-for-purpose immigration settings • enable a thriving tertiary education sector and seasonal workforce it will bring • develop a regional partnership approach to workforce planning • provide the environment to attract and welcome new workers, entrepreneurs, and enterprises at a pace that we can accommodate, and • crack the affordable housing crisis with cutting-edge policies and publicprivate partnerships. Not one of these will solve this alone, but all of them together will. What it will take to make this happen is experienced, collaborative, trusted leadership - drawing on amazing leadership across our communities.
The UK’s energy regulator signaled Friday it will hike the price cap on annual household energy bills by 80%, starting Oct. 1. The increase will impact at least 24 million households, raising the average annual cost to 3,549 pounds ($NZ 6,733), from 1,971 pounds ($NZ 3,600). The region has already been facing rising costs of living.

A 74-year-old former high school teacher in Australia has been found guilty of murdering his wife in 1982 after popular true-crime podcast “The Teacher’s Pet” renewed an investigation. Dawson faces a possible life sentence.
A cap delivering small electric currents to the brains of adults aged 65 and older has been found to boost memory for at least one month, according to an early study published last week.

Piles of trash have spilled onto Scotland’s streets in the last two weeks as the country’s garbage collectors refused to work over a pay dispute, causing the Scottish health authority to warn of public health and safety issues. Pay negotiations between local authorities and union leaders in dozens of cities, including Glasgow and Edinburgh, have been ongoing, with local authorities last rejecting a proposed 5% raise. The strikes is set to continue this week if no deal is reached.

Dawson was arrested in 2018 after the release of the podcast, which examined his relationship with Lynette and the events leading to her disappearance in January 1982. The judge hearing the case said the podcast may have impacted witness testimony but he was satisfied with the circumstantial evidence, dismissing Dawson’s claim that Lynette left him and citing inconsistencies in his defense. It is still unclear what happened to Lynette; her body was never found.
NBC News Verdict in ‘Teacher’s Pet’ Case
While training over the next two years as a SPELD assessor – New Zealand’s leading provider of support for children with dyslexia and learning difficulties - Emma will still work part-time for Lucy at the centre.
She’s grown Queenstown Kip McGrath Education Centre from just 64 students to well over 250 in less than six years. Now it’s time for experienced British teacher Emma Wilson to pursue her passion of ensuring that children with dyslexia don’t fall through the cracks. A primary teacher for 20 years in the UK, Emma says she’d long felt the system wasn’t doing all children justice. Some always missed out, mainly due to large class numbers. “Classroom teachers do a great job but there’s just so many tasks they have to deal with,” she says. Her late brother, Martin Wightman, ran the Kip McGrath centre in Queenstown. It was during a five month holiday to see him that Emma says she really saw what a difference could be made in children’s lives. Martin, an accomplished trumpet player, introduced her to fellow Master Blasters player, local musician Mark Wilson, in 2010. He soon swept Emma off her feet while leading the Queenstown Community Choir. Within three months they were engaged and in 2016 the opportunity arose for Emma to buy the centre. “Kip McGrath allowed me to do all the best bits of teaching. Building quality relationships, providing individualised tutoring, and enjoying those light bulb moments which happen every session, without all the administration and meetings,” she Asays.move to Frankton also helped grow the centre with such a wide family population base in the basin. “We provide extension learning for high achievers, more challenge for those who are ‘at level’, as well as assisting children with dyslexia and other learning differences. We’ve seen children make years of progress with spelling, reading or maths in just a few months,” Emma Existingsays. manager Lucy Geraghty, also from the UK, has now bought the centre from Emma.
The last two years have seen an increase in students attending Kip, which Lucy says can be partly attributed to the interruptions to schooling post Covid. “We’ve seen a huge impact on children’s confidence and many now really lack that confidence,” Lucy says that the centre is also seeing greater awareness from families. “There’s been so much online and at home learning that parents are now more in tune with where their kids are at.”

She’s very excited for the future of the centre and looking forward to expanding further to meet local requirements.
Emma is already able to screen children for dyslexia, but diagnosing is different. “Screening gives a good indication of a child’s strengths and weaknesses. Diagnosis gives the parent and school more certainty about what can be done to help each child.” Dyslexia is a problem which is prisonmorescary.“Thenot,”whichlikeby.itgooddon’t.CruiseDaBranson,–greatpeoplewhilerecognised.increasinglyAndmanydyslexicgoontosuccessinlifeincludingRichardLeonardoVinciandTom-many“KidscanbeatcoveringuptojustgetTheyoftenfeelthey’refailures,they’retotallysaysEmma.statisticsare70percentorofourcurrentpopulationin
Lucy says she will be welcoming the extra pair of hands and expertise, with around 100 small group sessions delivered at the centre each week.

She is the sixth franchisee in the 20-plus years of Kip McGrath in Queenstown. “Lucy is the ideal person to take over. I’m absolutely delighted for her,” says Emma.
New Zealand is dyslexic or neurodiverse and that needs to be addressed.” Emma says she believes the concept-based approach adopted by the New Zealand education system to whole word recognition rather than phonics (sounding out a word), has contributed to a rise in problems for dyslexic learners. “There’s a science in learning to read. It’s not a skill which humans are naturally born with, unlike learning to Emmaspeak.”has worked hard to diversify the subjects offered at Kip McGrath. “Creating The Academy has been a great success in attracting a wider range of teaching staff and specialists.” The Academy quickly grew to also re-inspire learners who weren’t reaching their full potential in the classroom. About 50 primary children attend for one day per week. “Many kids have a lot more to offer than they contribute in a classroom environment,” she says. “We have an individual approach which discourages comparison between peers.”
