businesses, organisations and individuals to roll-out the rainbow to welcome people to town and to show them that Queenstown and Central Otago celebrates diversity and inclusion and welcomes LGBTTQIA+ guests with open arms. There are some really easy ways to do that such as Fly a rainbow flag, dress your store, do something with your team. Pride is a time to come together and stand together for our LGBTTQIA+ communities and celebrate our differences as a strength. I want to say thank you for getting involved and to all the local venues who are behind Winter Pride this year and to all our sponsors, QLDC, and DQ for their support. We would love to see locals on the mountains wearing rainbows over the festival too. Make sure to check out our theme and event days - these are open to all (you just need a lift pass). Thank you, Queenstown now let’s, do this. It’s party time!

Martin King Andy Carter and Jono Browne along with hundreds of firefighters raced up 51 flights of Auckland’s Sky Tower Saturday, wearing full firefighting kit all to raise funds for Kiwis living with blood cancer. Andy and Jono, as part of Squad 51 raised over 15K for the Leukaemia & Blood Cancer foundation. Overall the event raised 1.3million.

Tourism Industry Association chief executive Rebecca Ingram was more upbeat about the Government announcement, describing it as “very positive news” for the industry. “We are hopeful this will help to relieve some of the immediate pressures on employers,” Ingram said. A recent survey by TIA found that 75% of tourism businesses are currently recruiting, everything from bike mechanics and kayak guides, to sales, marketing and operations managers. But, 59% of vacancies were receiving fewer than five applications.

On Sunday, Immigration Minister Michael Wood announced a raft of measures to address labour shortages across New Zealand. They include doubling the number of working holiday visas for ‘capped’ countries, such as Brazil, bringing in a potential additional 12,000 casual Anyoneworkers. already in NZ on a working holiday visa, which expires between this Friday and 31 May next year, will be allowed to stay and work an extra six Andmonths.people who had successfully applied for a working holiday visa, but then couldn’t come due to the pandemic, will be allowed to come instead from 31 January. Wood also announced sector specific support for snow and adventure tourism, aged care, seafood, meat processing, effectively rolling back the requirement for them to pay skilled migrants the median wage - $27 per hour. Skifields and adventure tourism businesses will instead be allowed to pay $25 per hour, with the wage threshold increasing each year until the agreement ends in 2025. Stokes, however, says the measures are “more of the same, last-minute “(They)announcements”.donotaddress the issue that we are competing globally,” she says. “We have far fewer applying to come. It’s an expensive and time-consuming process for businesses and applicants and when people arrive, we are an expensive place to live.”

Chamber boss Ruth Stokes

Since the borders reopened, around 4000 people have entered the country on working holiday visas, but the Government says a further 17,000 have been approved but have not yet arrived. Pre-Covid, there were more than 50,000 working holiday makers coming to NZ each year. In 2017, for example, there were 70,000. That year roughly 210,000 people in total arrived on various types of work visas, while there were 99,000 students, and 2.9 million tourists. There is no cap on the number of working holiday makers from most European countries, as well as the USA and Japan. Working holiday visas, last 12 months, or up to 23 months for migrants from the UK and Canada, with a medical certificate.

With each week, progress is being made across the QLDC street upgrade programme. Here’s the latest news. Park Street Park Street has reopened to traf c and parking. The wide footpaths create a safe environment for walking and cycling. There are still a few nishing touches to complete in spring, such as planting garden beds, and installing street furniture and a balustrade along the western side of the street. Park Street lights up — the new street lights on for the rst time last month.

In the Chamber’s recent Business Confidence Survey, finding staff was found to be the single biggest factor limiting growth for Queenstown Lakes Andbusiness.more than 80% of business owners and managers reported they were paying at least the national living wage, of $22.75.

Rees Street We have nished installing the underground services on Rees Street and are now rebuilding the base of the street in preparation for concrete pours in September. The team is doing everything it can to have the street open for Christmas.

R&A returns with huge line-up by Paul Taylor

The festival, which runs from December 29 to January 1, will be taking place for the 12th time this year.

Sampa the Great Pride leads events sector return by Paul Taylor

A second line-up announcement is expected in late August.

Last year, planning for Winter Pride was all about vaccine passports, QR codes and capacity limits. Then, Auckland was held in a level four lockdown, and the whole, alreadyscaled back event had to be cancelled at the eleventh hour anyway. Now, thankfully for New Zealand’s events sector, after two years of pain, the most disruptive Covid-19 measures appear to be consigned to history.

King says numbers are good, with several festival events sold out, and more events overall than in 2019, including non-ticketed events, such as the onmountain events. About 50% of the attendees will come over from Australia. “We feel really confident they’re going to have an amazing time. We just need some great weather now.”

The festival, which runs from 26 August to 4 September, is funded by ticket sales, and also supported by the Southern Lakes Regional Events Fund and Queenstown Lakes District Council.

Hopefully, there’s no such issues for this year’s acts, which include electronic duo Cosmos Midnight, smooth and soulful Dope Lemon and poet and rapper Sampa the Great. The line-up also features one of the most iconic figures in global dance music culture, Andy C, along with four-time award-winning DJ & producer from Manchester, Bou, the exciting, unique and diverse Drum & Bass DJ Harriet Jaxxon; and superstar radio host, promoter and DJ, Moxie.

More than 40 percent of the people who attend come from outside the region, helping bring a significant increase in regional spending to Wānaka and surrounding areas. “R&A is the country’s favourite road trip and we welcome people from all over Aotearoa to the Southern Lakes for their ultimate New Year’s Eve experience,” Turnbull says.

Rhythm & Alps attracts around 10,000 partygoers and more than 6,000 campers each year. Last year, it was caught up in a Covid-19 media storm over UK DJ Robert Etheridge, aka DJ Dimension, who was due to headline the New Year’s Eve set. He’d left isolation before getting the result of his final Covid-19 test, which came back positive.

The three-day festival will welcome in the new year from its Cardrona Valley site. And international acts are back on the bill in a big way, after Covid disruptions.

Rhythm & Alps organiser Alex Turnbull says he can’t wait for festival-goers to experience the 40 acts secured for this year’s event.

“We are thrilled to welcome the festival back for 2022 and this year we have focused on a very diverse line-up,” Turnbull said. “We’ve also been building a brand-new stage for our acts to perform on that’s probably the most dynamic stage in the country.”

“It’s quite a surreal feeling,” Winter Pride co-owner and organiser Martin King says, “just very weird that none of that is going to happen now. “We’d held a smaller festival in 2020, in a level two environment, when everyone thought that might be the new normal and just wanted to get out and “Then, travel.last year, there were so many contingency plans for everything, every different scenario.

“It just feels great that none of that is going to be an impediment. It’s a sigh of relief more than anything.” King says there’ll still be Covid-19 precautions, with crew wearing masks and hand sanitizer available, and there’ll be messaging around other health issues, including monkey pox. But, other than that, it’s back to organising a big 10-day winter party, although that means working 20 hours a day for King. “I can’t take my foot off the pedal until after the festival, it’s hard going. “But, I’m still excited that people get to come back together again, see friends they haven’t seen in a long time. I think it will be a little bit extra special this year.”

Southern Cross Central Lakes Hospital by Paul Taylor

Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) has named the winners of its Local Awards for the Southern Region, with Southern Cross Central Lakes Hospital scooping the Public Architecture accolade. Designed by Warren and Mahoney Architects, the hospital between Shotover Country and Lake Hayes Estate, is a 50-50 joint venture between Southern Cross Healthcare and Central Lakes Trust.

The judges said the hospital’s colour palette of soft, natural tones offered a sense of calm in a clinical situation, which contributes to patients’ wellbeing.

It was recognised by the judging panel for being “above the utilitarian Stanleynorm”.

Street’s Holiday Inn Express, designed by McAuliffe Stevens and taking inspiration from the boulders left in the Whakatipu valley by glaciers, also won its category, Planning and Urban Design.

The judges described Southern Cross Central Lakes Hospital as a technically complex building that is very functional and efficient. The care taken in designing and implementing the hospital’s user experience was also singled out, as was the building’s warm, abstract exterior.

Southern Cross Central Lakes Hospital has been recognised at the Southern Architecture Awards for its exceptional design and attention to detail.

Southern Cross Central Lakes Hospital was also one of six category winners to receive a Resene Colour Award too.

Southern Cross Central Lakes Hospital Executive Chair Andrew Blair says he’s pleased the hard work that went into creating a new hospital that’s considerate of both staff and patient needs has been recognised this way. “I want to congratulate Warren and Mahoney Architects for the overall vision and design they brought to this project,” he said. “We set about to develop a hospital that would not only serve the needs of Central Lakes locals but would do so in a way that’s as seamless and comfortable as possible for our patients and our healthcare workers.

“The judges noted that ‘a generous and humane spirit’ drove the implementation of our hospital’s design and I couldn’t agree more. Much thought was put into every aspect of this building, and it really shows.”

Rees Street We have finished installing the underground services on Rees Street and are now rebuilding the base of the street in preparation for concrete pours in September. The team is doing everything it can to have the street open for Christmas.

Latest street upgrade news

With each week, progress is being made across the QLDC street upgrade programme. Here’s the latest news. Park Street Park Street has reopened to traffic and parking. The wide footpaths create a safe environment for walking and cycling. There are still a few finishing touches to complete in spring, such as planting garden beds, and installing street furniture and a balustrade along the western side of the street. Park Street lights up — the new street lights on for the first time last month.

Brecon Street

Beach Street

The top half of Brecon Street is almost complete. A complex piece of work is now underway to construct a new intersection at Isle and Brecon streets. The upgrade of Lower Brecon Street is progressing well. Base concrete has been poured and paving is underway. We’ve also finished installing ducting for the traffic lights that will control the intersection of Shotover, Duke and Rees streets in the future. Good progress is also being made to seamlessly integrate Brian Smith Park with the new shared space. A bigger lawn and more seating will provide plenty of spots to relax.

A note on delays Without a doubt, the past few months have been an exceptionally challenging time. Like many local businesses, we’ve been challenged by staff absences due to winter illness and COVID-19, along with supply chain issues. We’re optimistic the rest of the year will offer fewer challenges so we can wrap up the Queenstown Town Centre Street Upgrade programme with fewer delays.

Upper Beach Street is being completed in two sections to ensure integration with the redevelopment of O’Connell’s Mall. The result is a great example of how the public and private sector can work together to achieve a good outcome for Queenstown. To update on progress, all concrete has now been poured and final paving is underway. Work is underway to tie in Upper Beach Street and Camp Street.

Paving is complete on Lower Beach Street. We’re expecting most street furniture and signage to be installed by September. The final element – a bespoke piece of timber seating on the edge of Earnslaw Park is still to be installed. When it reopens to traffic in December, Lower Beach Street will be a low-speed, shared zone. One-way traffic will be retained but the space will prioritise access for walking and cycling, in a similar way to the existing shared zone on Marine Parade.

A monthly update on the whole programme of work being delivered by Kā Huanui a Tāhuna. Kā Huanui a Tā huna is an alliance partnership between Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) along with four design and construction companies, Beca, WSP, Downer New Zealand and Fulton Hogan.

Good progress is being made to create the new intersection at Frankton Road and Melbourne Street.

The focus at the moment is on upgrading underground services in this location. We’ve also demolished the apartment annex at Ballarat Street, meaning you can now see how Melbourne and Henry streets will link to create Stage 1 of the new road. We are currently finalising plans for the pedestrian overpass to create a safe connection between Queenstown Hill and the Town Centre. We’ll publish some graphics to show how it will look as soon as they’re ready. Check out www.qldc.govt.nz/queenstown-town-centre-arterial

5. Lupins grow like weeds, some deem them weeds. There are plenty of spots around the district where you could harvest lupins. Using them either directly into your compost heap provides nitrogen and carbon. Chopped up with a spade or wood chipper they can be used as a mulch instead of straw or wood chips on your veggie gardens.

The Resilient Gardener Dr Compost aka Ben Elms is a permaculture and gardening expert who’s been operating in the unusual Central Otago climate for over 20 years. Funded by QLDC and delivered by Wanaka Wastebusters, the Dr Compost project aims to reduce organic waste going to landfill. Got a question? Check out @drcompost on Facebook or benelms.com @dr_compost | @doctorcompost | benelms.com

d. If space allows, create a comfrey patch, that you can harvest all summer long. Used as a liquid tea, direct mulch around seedlings or in the compost heap. e. I can keep going with weed teas and leaf mold.

a. Urine before you go urghyuk##$%#@! It’s sterile and there’s lots of it. Save it in a sealed container and use it watered down in a watering can. Or have a high carbon pile of woodchips that you keep adding to with the goal of making compost.

6. The revolution could be beginning. How about sharing tools? How many items in your shed do you wish you had access to or actually own that get used once a month. Plenty I bet and they usually have motors attached. Why not create garden pods with neighbours and friends or garden clubs and invest in an electric range of weedeaters, chainsaws, hedge trimmers and blowers. They’re low maintenance with the electric batteries, minimal noise and easy to use (of course safety first with most of these tools).

3. In the quest for more veggies, lawns are easily converted to veggie beds with cardboard down first and a small raised bed plonked on top. Filled up with a veggie bed recipe or try a lasagne style filling.

8. Other free plants. Got a friend with a strawberry patch. I guarantee you they’ve got free strawberry plants that need lifting. You’re doing them a favour, most people let their strawberry patches get out of control. Blackcurrants cut a 30 cm fresh stick either put it straight in the ground 50% in the ground or put 10 sticks into a pot with potting mix. Couldn’t be easier. Raspberries are very similar to strawberries in that they are rampant weeds in disguise. You can dig up canes with root plants and even get fruit this year. They’re probably available from your strawberry friend.

7. Free trees have to be my favourite. Got a tasty peach you’re eating. Why not pop 5 peach seeds into a pot and see what happens. Check out friends’ fruit trees, do they have some seedlings growing under them that need a new home. I have some Golden queen seedlings that are going to become gifts. I have acorns that become oak trees, Japanese Chestnut seedlings, a few random peach seedlings, plums...

9. Herbs can be divided and shared Fennel, Globe artichokes, marjoram, thyme, lovage, dill and plenty more. Make sure you give them some love in the first few weeks watering and compost in the planting hole. September onwards is the right time for most of this division, to protect from harsh frosts in the first few months. Most of these subgroups could have their own article dedicated to them maybe in the future. And plenty more resilient ideas we could get into. Maybe one on catching rainwater next!!! Feel free to fire questions at me via the Dr Compost facebook page/ messenger or Insta. Or drop an old fashioned email to drcompost@ wastebusters.co.nz Happy composting and gardening! Ben Elms

c. Making compost in a bin or bay. There’s a lot of materials around the district from manure to wood chips to lupins that you can scrounge for nothing.

4. Use free fertiliser. The dollars can start to add up when buying fertiliser and how good is that ‘fancy fertiliser’ product really?

b. Bokashi buckets aren’t completely free. If you were keen it could all be free with some youtube hours under your belt. For very little ongoing cost, bokashi is a super size for me growing vegetables.

2. Grow more veggies this year. Up the size of your garden. This doesn’t mean by a multiple of ten. It might be that you add one new bed this year and another next year. My largish veggie garden didn’t happen overnight. Every year I added a couple more beds. In fact, one year I reduced the amount of beds I was gardening. I needed to master less beds well than loads of beds badly.

I feel like my gardening has been based on resilience ever since I had the bee gees thrown at me re.’Peak Oil’ consequences in the early 2000’s. Turns out that running out of the stuff isn’t the issue, it’s a speedy transition that’s needed. For many years in this community it was hard to get certain community initiatives up and running, I put this down to everyone being time poor and a booming economy. Who needs a food forest when the trees are dripping with gold. Fast forward ten plus years and times have changed. We’re still in the boom times but with possible impending financial and environmental doom on the horizon. Yet before this people have been yearning for change, wanting to learn to grow food again. Maybe this is related to the Global Warming message finally out competing the petroleum greenwash message. Talking of changing climate check out Leopard slugs, they’re big and beautiful as slugs go. Well they’re definitely established in my garden. Signs of warming winters (except this one) and of future bugs to test us in our veggie gardens. So with the ramble intro out of the way let’s see how we can build and be resilient with our gardening practices. I love a numbered breakdown so here goes in no particular order.

1. If you’re reading this and you’re new to gardening, start today. That might involve using buckets and bins as your beds in the short term. The learning comes, there’s workshops and gardeners all around you who are willing to share their expertise.

QLDC’s Parks Manager, Kenneth Bailey said any carbon removal lost by removed trees would be replenished and bettered by planting native and non-spreading exotic trees.

Whakatipu Reforestation Trust will remove 100 trees near its Jean Malpas Nursery located in Jardine Park, to expand its educational garden and library of native plants nearby. The trees are Austrian pine, Corsican pine, Scots Pine and Red Pine. Over 200 trees will be planted in this location to replace those removed. Whakatipu Wilding Conifer Control Group will chop 20 Douglas fir trees from the southern side of the Jean Malpas Nursery, combating seed sources of the invasive pest threatening both the nursery and the Whakatipu Basin’s new Welcome Forest. The removed trees will be predominantly replaced with native species to improve the area’s biodiversity. And Queenstown Golf Club will remove 290 aging trees, managing negative impacts on the course’s turf. They are 215 Douglas fir and 75 exotic trees, predominantly pine, eucalyptus, and poplar. The restoration plan includes planting two trees for every one removed, made up of both natives and non-wilding exotic trees. The requests mark the first applications assessed under new criteria outlined in QLDC’s recently adopted Tree Policy 2022.

More than 400 trees will be chopped down on the Kelvin Peninsula and replaced with natives and non-spreading exotic trees.

Long term, carbon reduction benefits would increase in the area, Bailey says, and council intends to work through planting plans with all three organisations to help improve biodiversity in Kelvin Peninsula.

Along with QLDC, Ignite Wanaka, The Lakes Weekly and jobfix. co.nz, we are encouraging local businesses to participate in the August quarterly Business Confidence Survey for 2022. Four hundred trees for the chop by Paul Taylor

Queenstown Lakes District Council on Thursday approved requests from Whakatipu Reforestation Trust, Whakatipu Wilding Conifer Control Group, and Queenstown Golf Club. They are all located on recreation reserves. The majority of the trees are Douglas fir or wilding Douglas fir, but there are also pine, eucalyptus and poplar varieties. None are protected trees.

“These organisations will be adhering to Council’s new policy that for any tree removed on public land, two must replace it, and as these new trees start to flourish, Kelvin Peninsula will be transformed into a park-like space I’m certain future generations will cherish,” Bailey says. “The decision also means these community organisations will now be able to progress a range of projects that will benefit the community.”

Joseph Mooney MP for Southland Everywhere I go, I hear of severe staffing shortages meaning businesses are having to reduce hours, close for days at a time, and some are closed for good because they can’t get staff.

I also met up with the Queenstown Lakes District Council Community Partnerships team to hear more about their valuable work to support communities in the district and welcome newcomers to the area. It is reported that Queenstown-Lakes businesses missed out on an estimated $3 million in June because a lack of workers and reduced services meant visitors returned home with money unspent.TheGovernment needs to make it easier to hire workers from overseas. There is a global war for talent right now, and New Zealand’s Government is acting like it is 2017 and tightly controlling our borders to reduce the incoming working visas to a trickle.TheGovernment has also released a Draft Better Work Action Plan as Phase One of their Tourism Industry Transformation Plan. Crucially, the plan doesn’t address the elephant in the room: businesses are now closing permanently (not just a few days a week) because of staffing shortages. At the same time, the Government makes it more challenging with immigration settings to get staff from overseas in the middle of a global shortage of workers. The immigration hurdles this Government is putting on New Zealand businesses amid a global war for talent are extraordinary and incredibly short-sighted. I will continue to work hard to persuade this Government to urgently address the issue and give New Zealand businesses a fighting chance. Out and about, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some great people over the past few weeks. A highlight was the celebrations with the Indian community at Lake Hayes Pavilion for the 75th Indian Independence Day. During our visit to Nadia Lim and Carlos Bagrie at the Royalburn station on the Crown Range, they showed us some of the excellent work they are doing, trialling different farming systems and developing “paddock to plate” supply lines.

In the ruling released on Thursday, 18 August 18, the commissioners said they were particularly concerned by the scale and continuous length of the “very dominating” one-to-two storey horizontal glazing in the lodge’s main Thiel’sbuilding.193ha Damper Bay property, which he purchased in 2015 under the company Second Star Ltd, is in an Outstanding Natural Landscape (ONL) zoned area with views out to the Glendhu Bay Track and Lake Wānaka.

The tech entrepreneur sought consent for a series of buildings designed to sleep up to 30 people on his $13.5 million Damper Bay site and, despite plans for extensive mitigative planting, commissioners say the lodge would be “plainly visible”.

Architectural plans for the site made public late last year revealed an extravagant, multi-building retreat with multiple pools, libraries, spa facilities, and (until it was withdrawn by the applicant’s lawyers) a dedicated building for meditation. The lodge would “significantly detract” from the qualities of the ONL and would be “visually obvious in a way that will be likely to draw the viewer’s eye and detract from the ONL,” commissioners ruled. Their decision, made on behalf of Queenstown Lakes District Council, follows a recommendation by council planner Sarah Gathercole to refuse the proposal.

Billionaire’s proposed Wānaka bolthole refused by commissioners by Maddy Harker / Wānaka App US billionaire Peter Thiel’s proposed luxury lodge has been turned down by independent commissioners who said it would be “inappropriately dominant” on his lakeside property.

Upper Clutha Environmental Society president Julian Haworth spoke in opposition to the proposal at the May hearing.

Julian said he was “delighted” with the decision to refuse consent.

Commissioners Wendy Baker, Ian Munro and Glyn Lewers ruled that the positive effects “do not offset or counter-balance the scale or severity of the adverse ONL effects”.

It comes three months after a two-day resource consent hearing where Thiel’s lawyers argued the lodge would provide ecological and economic benefits to the lakeside town.

Landscape photography, the way it’s supposed to be by Jessica Allen Wander down Earl Street and you’re sure to stumble across Cory Marshall Gallery where you can view breath-taking photography of Queenstown and New Zealand landscapes. It’s owned by Queenstownbased Cory Marshall, who loves sharing his passion for the mountains with people, and when he’s not in the gallery, he’s out in the mountains capturing the beauty that is all around.

Arts+Culture

Originally from the US, Marshall started shooting photography just after he graduated from university and before embarking on a trip around Europe and Asia. Throughout his travels he developed his skills and found a love for landscape photography. He moved to New Zealand five years ago and now gets to combine his passion for the mountains and “Landscapephotography.photography

is all about patience. Most of my photographs are planned for a certain time of year where the sunset, sunrise or Milky Way line up perfectly with my foreground. Sometimes I shoot the same scene 20 to 30 times before I end up with a photograph I’m happy with. Other times I might spend a week at the same spot and come away with nothing at all. It’s all about the light, and waiting for the perfect moment takes ages but when everything all comes together it makes it worth the wait,” says Marshall. As a result of his job, Marshall has had some amazing experiences. One such is when he skied along the top of one of the two peaks on the main divide, looking down one way to the Tasman Glacier 1800 metres below, and the other overlooking the Tasman Sea. Mt. Cook is another place that he’s had some great experiences. “My favourite place to photograph is Aoraki/Mt. Cook National Park. With 19 peaks over 3000 meters, the scenery is truly spectacular. Driving up the valley into the park, Aoraki towers above the valley floor. The Mueller Hut and Hooker Valley track are easily accessible locations that I really enjoy, but my favourite parts of the park are the more difficult places to access, like the Plateau Hut and Ball Pass,” says Marshall Navigating Covid has been challenging for Marshall, as it has for most in Queenstown. With borders opening and more tourists in town, things are starting to pick up again. Marshall is planning more photography trips, too. “I have a few trips tentatively planned up to the glaciers in Aoraki National Park and Westland National Park. There are a few photos I have been trying to capture for the last couple of years where everything lines up during a short window of time. Hopefully this year will be able to capture the image I have had in my head the past few years,” says YouMarshall.can view Cory Marshall’s photography at his gallery at 1-7 Earl Street, or view it online at corymarshallgallery.com

For the New Zealand tour, they’ve teamed up with Kip Chapman to do the readings and storytelling. The prominent Kiwi actor-writer-director is best known for his work in The Lord of the Rings and the Top of the Lake TV series. “Kip will bring to life the three characters audiences will encounter – an artist, a musician and a murderer. Kip’s versatility and depth of craft will be on show. There are dark moments for sure, plus music from all of the greats – Schubert, Haydn and Janacek,” says James.

Julian and the quartet originally planned to bring their unusual approach to art and music to the region a couple of years ago (but, Covid-19). So when the Sydney Art Quartet were scheduled to play as part of the Auckland Writers Festival, Julian invited them to bring their performance to Arrowtown. It’s the first time the quartet have toured New Zealand.

Julian adds that ‘Art & Power’ is difficult to describe, but is a mustsee; “it’s quite difficult to describe in some ways until people have experienced it. It is not somebody reading with music in the background. You listen to the story, and then you have music, which reinforces the sense of impending doom, or danger, or power… it shows how words can reinforce and also be reinforced by music.” Facts Art & Power Sydney Art Quartet with Kip Chapman Saturday 27th August, 6 pm are $63 via Eventfinda

Cellist James Beck explains, “I created ‘Art & Power’ back in 2019 for the Australian actor David Wenham (Pirates of The Caribbean, Sea Change, Elvis) and the quartet had our bags packed to perform it for our NZ tour back in March 2020. We went into a final rehearsal in Sydney and when we came out the borders were closed!”

A special connection is bringing a top-rated quartet to Arrowtown by Bethany Rogers It’s not just the region’s natural beauty that brings visitors to the Queenstown Lakes. With so many residents of international origin, sometimes it’s visitors’ connection to the people, not the place, that brings them here. Such is the case with the Sydney Art Quartet. The chamber music institution is well-known for the unusual melding of its music with other art forms. They’ve worked with florists, actors, photographers, scentmakers, painters and cinematographers. Formed in 2015, the quartet is director and cellist James Beck, Anna Albert (violin), Andrew Jezek (viola) and Thibauld Pavlovic-Hobba When(violin).they were first starting, Julian Knights had a close relationship with the quartet and was the Board Chair. “They’re absolutely first class, and brimming with fresh approaches,” Julian says. Julian Knights was born in the UK and grew up in South Africa. He became interested in the arts while at university in Johannesburg but went on to have a distinguished career in the Financial Services industry, working in London and later, Sydney. Over the past fifteen years, Julian has donated a significant amount of time to the Arts and Not for Profit sector. He was Chair of the Australian contemporary dance group Sydney Dance Company from 2007 to 2013 and was appointed Chair of the Major Performing Arts Board (the umbrella body responsible for all 28 major performing arts companies in Australia).

Fast

In June 2016 Julian was made an Officer in the Order of Australia for services to Performing and Visual Arts and to the Financial Services JulianIndustry.and his family moved to live in New Zealand permanently in early 2020 and he’s become deeply involved in the local arts scene. Julian’s a Founding Benefactor and was a Trustee of the Three Lakes Cultural Trust and he serves on the Board of the Queenstown Recovery and Regeneration task force, the Arrowtown Creative Arts Society and the Auckland Writers Festival. It’s the connection to the Auckland Writers Festival that’s helped bring the Sydney Art Quartet to our neck of the woods for their latest show ‘Art & Power’. For the performances, words and music will be wound together. Stories of the power of music and art will be performed alongside the quartet as they play music linked to the age, theme and emotion of the stories.

We all see the world through completely different lters. From early childhood development through to today, every experience and lesson along the way has shaped the way in which you see yourself, others and the world around you.Ilike to joke that there are always way more than two sides to every story because we have to consider that two people will have enough perspectives, narratives and opinions to make for a daytime courtroom drama! Too often, the story we have about a situation is drastically different from the reality which leads to distress, agitation, miscommunication and con ict. When we spend time training self awareness, emotional expression and interpersonal skills we remember that what we are telling ourselves is not always fact. To discern fact over feeling is to question our thoughts and remember that our lter is not everyone’s.

Give yourself a chance to re ect and see where your next steps land.

30th September 2022, 930am-4pm at the Sudima Hotel, 5 Mile. Limited space available. Register through my extensive experience as a facilitator and teacher and my passion for learning about wellness along with sharing the ups and downs of being human with others around me.

Among the many lessons brought on by uncertainty and challenge, eventually we arrive at the crossroads of two questions - where do we go from here? And, what have I learned for next time? For many of us, we have been treading water with our head just above the surface with no time for re ection or energy to take stock of where we are now. This state of perpetual unknowns and only just managing can leave us feeling irritable, unful lled and without purpose which drastically impacts quality of life. You are certainly not alone if your goals consist of just making it through the day! So how can we begin to face the challenges at hand and make a plan for what’s next? I discovered emotional intelligence as a personal and professional development concept by accident during my own rock bottom several years ago. I had left over a decade-long career, moved my life across the world and was dealing with a laundry list of health issues. Suddenly, all of my coping skills and routines were gone and I had to start from zero. A course I was on had us ll out a questionnaire and before I knew what I had signed up for, a 30 page report was handed to me laying out a comprehensive explanation of my low stress tolerance, low assertiveness and over compensation of self awareness and empathy. The picture painted was not a pretty one and what became blindingly obvious was where I needed to bring balance before moving Emotionalforward.intelligence reminded me that I did not have to continue doing what I had always done and that I didn’t have to change everything all at once. It gave me a step by step plan to develop who I was. What is it? Emotional intelligence (EI) as it is applied today is a set of skills that allow us to manage our own emotions but also understand and respond to the emotions of others. You have no doubt practised EI skills in moments of disagreement, stress or uncertainty because it covers how we react and respond to challenging situations. In the past, EI has been dismissed as the ‘soft skills’ that aren’t particularly valuable, when in fact, research over the past 3 decades re ects the opposite - that EQ (this is your emotional intelligence quotient) is the strongest predictor of performance. EQ assessments are used primarily in leadership training, recruitment and professional development but the value of the data is for anyone looking to take stock of strengths and growth potential. EQ vs IQ You most likely know of the age old IQ test that would evaluate your ability to reason, problem solve and other cognitive abilities. The fact that IQ is typically set by the age of 20 is enough to make me question its relevance, as I was certainly not a trustworthy decision maker at 20! When we take a closer look at social and emotional skills, these are malleable throughout our lifetime and can be developed to improve how we lead, how we handle stress and how we face change or uncertainty. Speci cally, the 5 skill sets that make up EQ are: emotional self awareness, emotional expression, interpersonal skills, decision making and stress management.

There are many books written about why emotional intelligence matters but my top two have to do with keeping our brains/mindsets wired for change and self awareness for (hopefully) less suffering. It helps us remember we can change our minds. Our minds can change for many reasons; new data, new experiences, new views shared from others. It’s not always easy but one of the greatest gifts our brain gives us is the ability to learn from a mistake and make a different choice next time. It’s that same skill that kept us alive when one type of berry made us sick and so we knew next spring to not eat the tempting fruit. Science develops, trends change, expectations shift. We can train to be ready for those moments when our beliefs are questioned or our opinions called out by practising EQ skills such as exibility, independence and becoming aware of existing cognitive bias. As we age, changing our minds becomes more dif cult and requires more effort but if we prioritise cognitive health and lifelong learning, change and challenge will feel far less disruptive.

Marty served more than 30 years as area chair for St John’s locally, chaired the Fernhill Community Association and Aspen Body Corp.

His farm and contracting business were busy and it was costly hiring a pilot so Marty moved out of Amuri Air Services. First wife Sandy and two children followed and they had two rural properties after selling the Culverden farm, including an Amberley horse stud and deer farm. In 1981 they came to Queenstown looking for a business and Marty bought Alpine Jet, which he ran solo. “It was the only surveyed jetboat running on Lake Wakatipu and the Kawarau River,” he says. He also teamed up with Mount Nicholas Station, running fishing charters. Tickets were $25 and he’d make $1000 in the hand on Christmas Day. He was asked to become local harbourmaster by a council manager. “I had no harbourmaster qualifications. I was given a 1-tonne ute, no contract and told, ‘Go to it’.”

Now based in Hurunui, near his old home patch, Marty says he’s come full circle. He still works in Queenstown doing inspections and certification for Maritime New Zealand and continues to contract for the authority, while working for Southern Monitoring Services nationwide.

Once Southern Monitoring Services took over he continued as district harbourmaster with greater resources. Within seven or eight years Marty was doing jetboat audits all over New Zealand and Queenstown’s blueprint was adopted nationally by the then Maritime Safety Authority. Together with owner Alan Eyles, deputy harbourmaster Dave Black, and Craig Black and Jeff Donaldson in Wanaka, lasting relationships were built with operators, police and emergency services, and Maritime NZ in Invercargill. Marty was also instrumental in introducing pollution control and He’sresponses.seen plenty of stupidity and drunken boating behaviour, and been through his share of controversy. “The booze culture was really bad. Some of them have as much beer on board as they carry petrol. It’s ridiculous.” While he may have appeared to be the fun police riding up on his marked jetski, Marty’s motivation was always to keep people safe. “Even the uncooperative “drop dead gorgeous” girls in G-string bikinis paddle boarding around the centre of Frankton Arm without life jackets didn’t escape his watchful eye. After threatening to call police for assistance the girls were fined $300 for no life Marty’sjackets.seensome second generation excuses flowing too. In the early days he’d constantly be chasing “naughty” young Mark and John Wikstrom. “They’d be whistling around the willows near the Kawarau Bridge in their tinny (dinghy). I’d always be giving them a tonging up.”

Several summers ago Marty rode into Bob’s Cove and noticed a boatie with a wakeboarder ready to take off and no observer. “He tried to convince me they were just ‘admiring the view’ to avoid a hefty fine. Then he said he was Mark Wikstrom’s son and I thought, “A chip off the old block,” laughs Marty, who by then had appointed Mark as harbourmaster in Bob’s Cove. Just this January, Mark redeemed himself though, as marriage celebrant for Marty’s marriage to Lek. “We’re now great friends,” he grins.

It wasn’t always smooth sailing, but after witnessing one too many tragedies Marty pushed for new safety bylaws to control commercial operators. “We had more than 100 rafting guides and jetboat operators on board, who all became licensed and registered with a full safety plan.”

You could say he was Queenstown’s very own version of ‘Baywatch’, a dedicated 24/7 minder of Wakatipu waters for 36 years, and in that time Marty Black and his trusty jetski brigade would’ve saved countless lives. Queenstown Lakes District harbourmaster from 1985 until 2021, Marty was employed by local district council contractor Alan Eyles’ Southern Monitoring Services for most of that time, working with a great team. However, in the early days he fell into the brand new solo role, quite by chance, with no qualifications, chartering new waters. It was sink or swim for this former farmer and keen boatie from Culverden. A farmer’s son, Marty attended Culverden District High School where he confesses he was a regular for the cane, “now and then”. He was always keen on fishing and boating as a teenager, driving the neighbour’s jetboat at 16. He also achieved a top scouting honour at 16 when he was named a “Queen’s Scout” which earned him and 35 other top scouts a three-month cruise and rail tour around Europe, the UK and States, attending a global jamboree in Greece. “It cost 900 pound,” he Martyrecalls.”worked on a neighbour’s farm before heading to Aussie with a few mates for the big money, driving trucks for $1000 a week in the mid to late 1960s. Unfortunately, on a trip home with a new girlfriend, who had the Hong Kong flu, Marty’s father contracted it and was forced to quit farming. By then Marty was in his mid-20s and had to come home to run the 900-acre (364ha) cropping farm where he stayed for 10 years. Here he pursued his love of jetboating and even owned three planes at one stage. “My first was a $3000 Auster, which I sold then bought a better $10,000

Its annual financial results, published last Wednesday, show its total revenue was $26.8m, creating a $1.08m profit after tax.

CEO Glen Sowry says the pace and timing of recovery is dependent on a wide range of factors, including domestic tourism, trans-Tasman flight schedules, and the recovery of global aviation and tourism. But QAC forecasts indicate there will be 1.59 million passenger arrivals and departures in the coming year, and ZQN will be back to pre-pandemic levels by FY25.

“Queenstown and the wider region remain highly desirable places to live and visit and whilst it will take some time for the global aviation industry to rebuild and recover, we are confident that we are well placed to serve the residents of the region and visitors well,” Sowry says.

• Shareholder dividend of $1.3 million declared

QAC Board Chair, Adrienne Young-Cooper says: “After operating for more than two years in the complex environment created by the Covid-19 global pandemic and the related global and national response, we are cautiously confident that we have now entered a sustained recovery period. “We are focused on supporting the recovery of the Southern Lakes region and the businesses operating at Queenstown Airport. Young-Cooper says the airport corporation’s business fundamentals and operating capabilities remain strong. “We are pleased to declare a dividend this year after two years without declaring an annual dividend.” There were no international flights from the airport for 330 days of the financial year, which ended 30 June. And domestic services were hit by national and regional lockdowns, with no flights from Auckland, the busiest route, for 178 Young-Cooperdays.says that had an impact on both aeronautical and commercial revenue, and FY22 was the most challenging year of the pandemic for Australianscashflow. were able to fly into NZ from 12 April, while scheduled direct trans-Tasman flights returned to ZQN on 23 May. Film Screening - Fiona Clark: Unafraid, 2021

Fiona Clark is one of Aotearoa’s most notable photographers but, thanks to the repressive environment of 1970s New Zealand, her career was almost stubbed out before it began. The artist’s early images captured the heady local excitement of gay liberation that mainstream society was not ready to accept; her negatives were censored, images were pulled from exhibition, and art dealers refused to work with her.

The band that started out, back in the 90s, as a British answer to Nirvana foretold us about big tech, cancel culture, mental health, dirty politics – they saw it all coming and turned it into landmark albums like OK Computer, The Bends and In Rainbows. We can’t say we weren’t warned! But we can sit back with a glass of wine and enjoy the wit and whimsy of Radiohead’s soundtrack to life in the 2020’s.

The reduced bus timetable was introduced on Tuesday, 19 July, slashing the number of services by 25%. That’s been compounded by further daily, emergency cuts.

“The national bus driver shortage is hitting hard and is compounded by seasonal illness. Operators are currently not able to recruit enough drivers to run a full service.”

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN Page 28

No return to full bus services by Paul Taylor

Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult and Dunedin’s mayor Aaron Hawkins have called for talks with ORC over the issue. Ideally, they want to see councils own and operate their own bus services but are willing to discuss alternatives.

Last week, the Government announced policy changes which would enable that to Transporthappen.Minister

The SPTF will aggregate employee terms and conditions, create greater transparency over costs, encourage collaboration in planning between regional councils like ORC and territorial councils like QLDC, and will also incentivise carbon-neutral fleets. But, in the short-term ORC says it is working closely with the operators, including Ritchies in Queenstown, to monitor the situation.

“The key criteria for moving back to a full timetable is that the operators have enough drivers,” Rodgers says.

Drivers have complained they’re working 60+ hours a week, close to the legal maximum, but only being paid $22.75 an hour, while wages in other industries such as hospitality have exploded, as businesses compete for staff.

Michael Wood said the Sustainable Public Transport Framework (SPTF) will replace the Public Transport Operating Model established in 2003, which he said had encouraged operators to squeeze worker conditions and pay, affecting driver retention.

Despite the reduced service timetable, passenger numbers in Queenstown remain well ahead of 2021 and have grown during the reduced timetable. The reduced bus timetable will be placed at bus stops over the upcoming Aweeks.Queenstown booklet containing the reduced timetable will be available early next week from ORC’s office at Alta House, Frankton. Passengers can also phone 0800 672 873 (Dunedin) and 0800 672 8778 (Queenstown) for information and to request a copy to be posted to them. ORC will advise when the timetable will be available in pamphlet (pocket-sized) form.

“This is particularly being felt in the Queenstown network,” Doug Rodgers, ORC Transport manager, says.

Queenstown’s reduced bus timetable will continue indefinitely, despite the end of the Covid-19 surge. Otago Regional Council, which runs the Orbus service, is 39 drivers short of being able to provide a full service in Queenstown and Dunedin.

“We don’t want to rush back to a full service, then not be able to fulfil the increased level of service,” Rodgers says. “This issue is problematic across the transport industry nation-wide. We know that all partners in the provision of public transport, including central government, are working on ways to address this.”

Up to date information on the reduced timetable can also be accessed on the ORC website orc.govt.nz

Welcome!

The Pride Pledge has celebrated its fourth birthday recently. The pledge is a values-based commitment that organisations and individuals can take to demonstrate their dedication to the safety, visibility and inclusion of the LGBTTQIA+ (rainbow) community and workforce. It covers an array of businesses from bars to ski fields, airports, restaurants, hotels, public sector organisations and beyond.

The rainbow tick is a certification process that is less applicable to smaller or independently-owned businesses such as bars, restaurants, cafes, or tourism operators. Since its inception in Queenstown, the Pride Pledge has had 270 organisations representing thousands of people throughout Aotearoa sign it. It’s now evolved to include Rainbow Awareness Training and a Rainbow Inclusion Stocktake, which is a selfevaluation tool to help organisations assess what they’re doing (and what they’re not) to support rainbow inclusion.

“There was a real demand to build understanding, awareness and empathy within the rainbow inclusion space. So once we started workshops in Queenstown, more and more people showed interest and then organisations started to want them for their staff.”

“We now have more of an acute understanding of some of the difficulties that some of our travellers will face when they travel overseas or domestically. In terms of different bias and different laws and legislations, we now approach every booking with a sense of tolerance, love and inclusivity.”

The initiative started in Queenstown when Martin King, the Director of Winter Pride, wanted to encourage businesses to be rainbow inclusive year-round. He used his experience and connections in his HR management role to research rainbow inclusivity and implement the pledge after he took over Gay Ski Week and rebranded it. “There was a festival in Queenstown called Gay Ski Week and the couple who owned that approached us and asked if we would be willing to take the festival over. My husband and I agreed and once we got it up and running decided to do a rebrand to Winter Pride – I decided to throw myself at it, and off the back of that there were a couple of things that dawned on us; one is that some organisations get involved in pride festivals for the wrong reasons, and most often for a short time and a good time, not for a long time.

Find out more about the Pride Pledge, Rainbow Awareness Training or the Rainbow Inclusion Stocktake at pridepledge.co.nz by Jessica Allen

King eventually moved up to Auckland, and that’s when the pledge and training started to reach beyond Queenstown. Now the pledge has been taken by businesses all throughout the country. One of the Queenstown businesses to take the pledge is xtravel, who are the official travel partner of Winter Pride. They took the pledge as they understood that while New Zealand is a very inclusive and safe space, not everywhere in the world is – with different laws, customs and cultures, travel can be difficult to navigate for members of the rainbow community.

PRIDE PLEDGE TURNS FOUR

Before taking the pledge, xtravel were aware of the difficulties that members of the rainbow community can face when travelling but have since learnt a lot more and now have a better understanding of how to navigate these issues. They want to ensure that everyone is able to travel safely, comfortably, and to be true to themselves.

“Based on my experience in HR and based on these factors, we decided we would launch to our Winter Pride sponsors a requirement for them to commit to being rainbow inclusive all year around, beyond the Winter Pride Festival. It was a way for us to call those organisations to account about their commitment. The vast majority were like ‘absolutely we’re committed, this is important and we love Winter Pride but it is more than that – we want to be rainbow inclusive 365 days a year.’ We did some research, had a look around and spoke to other people that I knew in my HR world, and it dawned on us that there wasn’t a platform, a business or an organisation that people could be part of that could actually support them on their rainbow-inclusion journey other than the rainbow tick,” said King.

“We wanted to make sure that by taking the pledge we were letting people know that we would do everything in our power to ensure that people booking with us had holidays that were inclusive and that were meaningful for them,” said Tori Keating, co-owner of xtravel.
