We can’t be naïve over drugs First up, the following represents a personal view and is not reflective of Council policy. I do however have the support of a majority of elected members in making the following comments. At the outset, let me state my abhorrence of recreational drugs. They are one of the greatest social evils of our time. Use of these drugs has ruined countless lives and families and led to the flourishing criminal gangs prevalent in our society today. I should also add that my abhorrence of these substances was shaped at an early age when a close friend from school days overdosed and drowned in his own vomit. You may have heard of an organisation called ‘Know Your Stuff’. If you haven’t, Know Your Stuff encourages people who have purchased illicit substances (drugs) to have them tested before they take them. The premise of Know Your Stuff is very much that the best drug is no drug, but if you are going to take something, then know what it is before you put it in your body. Many would understandably argue that this could perhaps be seen as encouraging drug use. I understand that point perfectly well but I also believe it is naïve to assume that young folk won’t continue to experiment and engage in recreational drug use. We’ve all seen recently the effects of the fentanyl debacle and the harm caused by that. That is one particular drug, as you all know, there are many, many more.
There were ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ a plenty on Friday night as spectacular fireworks lit up the sky above Queenstown. The display was part of Destination Queenstown’s four-day Welcome to Winter Festival. This epic shot was captured by Undersoul Photography. Read more on page 4.
QLDC has been approached by Know Your Stuff for assistance in establishing themselves in Queenstown and Wānaka. They will not be operational all the time but will particularly target concerts and events where young people are likely to be present in significant numbers. I am supportive of this move and have arranged for space to be made available for testers, equipment and support staff to be on hand for those high-profile events. Personally, I would much rather young people did not take drugs. However, I am not so naïve as to think that people won’t take drugs, and, as I said, at least this ensures that the fall out harm from drug taking is lessened. QLDC is not providing any financial support but merely cooperating and supplying space where it is able to on a casual basis. I repeat, the best drug is no drug, but drugs will be taken. Let’s do our best to keep young people safe. Queenstown Lakes Mayor Jim Boult

Queenstown found its mojo again over the weekend as thousands turned out for the Welcome to Winter Festival. Friday night’s fireworks and music were the main event for the four-day festival run by Destination Queenstown, which has replaced the 10-day Winter Festival since Covid-19 hit.
Saturday’s The Whakatipu Legend - Welcome to Winter Swim, organised by the Southern Lakes Swimming Club, featured 1km and 500m races around the bay, with, or without, a wetsuit. At 8 degrees Celsius, the water temperature was cold enough to freeze the unmentionables off a brass monkey.
DQ boss Mat Woods said the early morning rain and wind cleared for a “beautiful, clear, cold night for the fireworks” at 7pm.
Queenstown’s Paul Jacquin, 40, without a wetsuit.
“And people came out in droves. It was amazing to see so many locals enjoying it, along with domestic visitors and international visitors,” Woods says.
“It was definitely a challenge,” he says. “Most of us usually swim in the lake in a wetsuit at this time of year, but we’d had a dip at Lake Alta (up the Remarkables) a few weeks ago, while it was still liquid, so I thought if I can do 15 minutes bobbing about in there, I can probably do 20mins in the bay, expending energy as well.”
“There were thousands on Earnslaw Park and the waterfront, and everyone getting involved from balconies of hotels, offices and homes. It was a full house.” Young and old stayed around for live music from Kiwi singer songwriter Mitch James.
Jacquin says the body knows what to do in the cold, drawing the blood away from the extremities to keep the core warm. “There’s definitely face freeze when you put your face in though. But it was awesome and because it was a race, with a crowd, there was a bit of adrenalin to get you through too. “Then it was just a case of getting warm on the beach afterwards, getting dry and in a down jacket by the heaters.”
“This has been a shot in the arm the CBD needed to bring people back into town.” Despite that, there are no immediate plans to relaunch the expansive and expensive Winter Festival.
was one of the mad ones, swimming
The festival began on Thursday with the Queenstown Chamber & Skyline Welcome to Winter Business Lunch. The event saw a panel debate the contention that Queenstown is ‘The Jewel in the New Zealand Tourism Crown’. It threatened to be something of a downer after the first two speakers but then Queenstown Pride boss Martin King pulled it round with a funny, impassioned 10-minute rant extolling the virtues of the town. Mitch James on the TomTom Soundstage. Photo: Jackie Gay
“We’ll sit down and have a good debrief and then look to the future and see what that looks like,” Woods says. Other festival events, including markets, night skiing and a family treasure hunt, also proved popular, while tourists and perhaps locals could be forgiven for double-taking at the sight of 25-or-so hardly souls entering the water at Queenstown Bay for a winter swimming race.
RealNZ boss Stephen England-Hall provided one the most salient points, explaining when he was in charge of Tourism New Zealand, the organisation had spent millions trying to convince tourists not to come to Queenstown through its regional dispersion initiative. But it was comedian Nick Rado who got the biggest laugh of the afternoon, with his gallows humour dig at Queenstown house prices, saying “I couldn’t think of a more picturesque place to default on my mortgage”.

COMMUNITY NOTES SAVING FOR A SAFE HAVEN by Sue Fea
The events of the past two years have left Central Lakes Family Services staff constantly at capacity, mostly dealing with family violence cases, only highlighting the increasing need for a dedicated safe house, says centre manager Tina Mongston.
Julia’s event will be a huge start. “It’s phenomenal,” says Tina. “But unfortunately we won’t get there from one fundraiser and in the longer term we definitely need a safe house.” Prior to Covid times the local services also came to the rescue of visiting and overseas families affected by family violence while on holidays too, but with the borders closed there have obviously been fewer of these cases. However, Tina says staff are definitely seeing the impacts of Covid times on mental health, as are counselling services worldwide, amid many problems with financial stress. “Our workload hasn’t decreased, but we’re also working with a lot more complex cases, mainly family violence, and staff are constantly at capacity,” she says. In the past two years they’ve been dealing with people whose businesses have closed, they’ve lost jobs, migrants who’ve been stuck in isolation and new parents having babies without family support from overseas. For Julia, who has experienced the effects of domestic violence herself, says she was moved to begin fundraising when she realised there was no safe house locally. “I had a broken jaw and was an absolute mess and a woman gave me $500,” says Julia. “Victims of domestic violence often don’t have any money as the perpetrator keeps them dependent,” she says. “I couldn’t pay that woman back and all she said was, ‘You’ll pay it forward one day’, so that’s what I’m doing.”
Queenstown Women’s Refuge Awards organiser Julia Střelou
Local author and advocate for women’s empowerment Julia Střelou is organising the inaugural Awards & Gala for Women’s Refuge Services, with a charity auction, to be held in November. Family violence is an issue close to Julia’s heart and the idea is to kickstart annual fundraising for Queenstown’s own safe house. The event was to be held in March, but had to be postponed due to Covid restrictions. Tina says a variety of different short-term accommodation options are used for families affected by family violence locally in what is a unique environment. “We’ve been providing services for years and the accommodation options we’ve used have worked, but a safe house is definitely where we’re heading now,” says Tina. However, rising property prices locally mean housing is becoming more expensive and the resort’s been going through a difficult period. “We’re probably looking at closer to one million dollars for a safe house built to purpose,” she says.
Julia, who also writes poetry, already donates a portion of her books to Women’s Refuge. “I wanted to do more. We have to do more. One in three women in New Zealand is a victim of family violence,” she says. “The last statistics out from the police (20/21 year) show an increase each year. Lockdowns definitely contributed and they also believe that as many as 70 percent of incidents are not reported,” says Julia. The awards, championing and celebrating our local female heroes, and gala will be held on November 19 at Skyline and Julia’s hoping to sell all 200 tickets, with more than 50 percent sold already. Local businesses have been extremely generous donating prizes for the awards auction, which include a premium Hilton suite and spa package, Cardrona ski and lesson pass, Dart River Jet tickets, A Float Cave relaxation package and Ira Mitchell painting. Julia’s on the hunt for more prizes and will be making the fundraiser awards gala an annual event. Tit bits FROM AROUND THE WORLD
Soft Sounds Dull Pain
In 1960, a group of dentists published a curious study: when they played music for their patients during operations, the people experienced less pain. Some didn’t even need nitrous oxide or local anesthesia to get through unpleasant procedures. Now a new paper untangles why this works—at least in mice. The findings could give scientists new ways to treat pain in humans, he says. To get a better sense of why music helps with pain, Yuanyuan Liu, a neurobiologist at the U.S. National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, and his colleagues turned to mice. For 20 minutes a day, they played pleasant-sounding (at least to human ears) symphonic music— Bach’s Réjouissance—to the rodents at 50 or 60 decibels in a room where the background noise clocked in at 45 decibels. During these sessions, the scientists injected the mice’s paws with a painful solution. Then, they prodded the paws with thin filaments at differing pressure levels to see how the rodents responded. If they flinched, licked, or pulled their paws back, the researchers took that as a clue the mice were feeling pain. Only noise at the lower volume, 50 decibels, seemed to numb the animals—a real surprise, Liu says. When the researchers poked their inflamed paws, the mice didn’t flinch. With louder noise, the animals were much more sensitive to the stimulus. It took only one-third as much pressure on the their paws to make them respond, the same as with no music. “It turns out that this intensity is the key,” Liu says. The team also tested dissonant music and white noise. All numbed pain, as long as they were played at levels only slightly above background noise, the researchers report today in Science. Beyond making dentist visits more bearable, the findings could provide researchers with a cheap and easy way to shield rodents from pain during experiments without confounding the results, Zhang says. “Pain relief is part of the basic welfare of animals” in research, he says. Playing these sounds could have “a striking effect.” www.science.org
Almonds Stranded in California These days, almonds seem to constantly be in peril. The trees are reliant on bees for pollination, so almonds are susceptible to problems with bee populations. The crops also need large amounts of water, making them susceptible to drought. But now, California’s almond industry is reportedly facing an issue that has nothing to do with the environment, but economics: Post-pandemic changes to the global supply chain have left producers struggling to export the almonds they have. California produces about 80 percent of the world’s almond supply, and 70 percent of those almonds are exported for sale, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. But exporting requires shipping containers, and those have been at a premium recently. It’s reached a point where demand for containers in Asia was so high that, after dropping off their loads in Southern California, the containers were being sent back to Asia empty instead of taking the time to head north to the Port of Oakland, the primary export spot for almonds. The problem has persisted, and this week, the Los Angeles Times reports that almond exports are down about 13 percent this year, with around 1.3 billion pounds of almonds left undelivered. And California Almonds’ May data shows that the uncommitted inventory of almonds was up 52 percent from the same period last year to over 660 million pounds. It’s bad news for the state as a whole: Almonds were reportedly California’s top agricultural export last year, worth about $4.7 billion. On the bright side, almonds aren’t prone to spoilage and they can apparently last in storage for around two years. www.foodandwine.com

Trust secures award Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust’s Secure Home Programme has won the Leading Innovation Award at the Australasian Housing Institute’s annual Brighter Future Awards. Trust chair Richard Thomas says the award is a tribute to years of innovation from QLCHT. “With a number of other organisations across the country now lining up to use our Secure Home programme, we’re incredibly proud of breaking ground here and honoured to receive such recognition,” Thomas says. The first of its kind in NZ, Secure Home is a programme where people purchase the properties through a 100-year land lease arrangement, with the Trust retaining ownership of the land in perpetuity.

Queenstown’s new dedicated tequila and mezcal-inspired cocktail bar opened its doors last week, bringing a taste of Mexico to NZ. Little Mez is the latest creation from Future Hospitality Group, which operates Little Blackwood, Minus 5º ICE BAR, Margo’s and the Queenstown Ice Bar. It will offer more than 80 tequilas and mezcals direct from Mexico, with bottle prices ranging from $60-$850. There are also some bespoke bottles priced up to $3000. “Some are the only ones in New Zealand, which means when it’s gone, it’s gone,” co-owner James Ace says. “Most of them though, if you can find them you’ll only find them in one or two other venues in the country.” The bar will also offer organic wines, Mexican beers, non-alcoholic drinks and Mexican-inspired food from Executive Chef Matt Tobin.
Quaked awake Queenstown Lakes residents were woken by a 5.5 magnitude earthquake in the early hours of last Tuesday morning. The very shallow quake happened near the coast, about 90km north of Queenstown, at 3.29am, at depth of 5km. It was the largest in the world for the previous 24 hours. according to seismic monitoring website Volcano Discovery. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones. People in Fernhill, Arrowtown, Frankton, Lake Hayes and further afield in Cromwell and Clyde, were awoken with “a rumble”, “a wee rattle”, “moving plates” and shaking beds.

Shotover Jet unveils electric jetboat Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu is jetting towards a zero-carbon future after unveiling the world’s first electric tourism jet boat in Queenstown on Wednesday morning. It is part of an 88-action plan Ngāi Tahu has released to tackle the causes and impacts of climate change. In Queenstown, the familiar roar of V8 engines on the Shotover River is set to become a distant memory. Ngāi Tahu Tourism is planning to have at least half of its jet boat operations - about 12 to 15 boats - converted to electric by 2030. Its general manager Jolanda Cave said it would be an even better experience.
Jolanda Cave at the launch. Photo: RNZ / Tess Brunton
“You still have the sound of the jet units. But then things like coming into the canyons with the jet units and coming as close as we do at Shotover, it actually adds to the exhilaration.
Shotover Jet senior driver Nick Simpson at the wheel of the new boat. Photo: RNZ / Tess Brunton
In the first three years, she said Ngāi Tahu has invested $27 million into climate action. There were obvious reasons to take action, she said.
“If you put it into places like Dart River and Hollyford, having a quieter boat in a serene landscape like that only enhances the experience.”
“Sixteen of our 18 marae are coastal so there are a number of challenges there with the sea level rise, so what action are we taking to protect and preserve those things into the future.
The project received funding from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority in 2019.
“So you’ll start seeing a lot of activities take place across Ngāi Tahu takiwāin the next three years.”
It takes about an hour to charge the prototype, but that was expected to be a lot quicker with fast chargers in place.
The boats would continue to run on the awa (river) while they transitioned, helping Queenstown’s economy, she said.
“In Shotover, finding batteries that can charge within 25 minutes, but can run on the water for an hour - two trips - which is the exact same as what our fuel requirements are at the moment.”
“Tourism is an important commercial activity of the tribe. It’s a way of us telling our story, putting our footprint on the landscape, and we’ll always be present in the tourism industry.
Before Covid-19, more than half of Ngāi Tahu Tourism’s carbon footprint was from jet boats.
“So rather than take the jet boats off the river, we’re going to innovate ... and we’ll phase out over time.”
Cave said they wanted to make all their operations carbon neutral by 2050.
Shotover Jet senior driver Nick Simpson who tested out the new electric prototype said it performed really well.
“I think it’s also saying a strong message to the tourism industry that if we can pivot and change as much as we have, so can you, and really challenging them to have a look at their operations on how they can do it as well in a unique and authentic way.”
‘No greenwashing’ promise In 2018, Ngāi Tahu released a climate change strategy. Kaiwhakahaere Lisa Tumahai said the action plan would see that vision come to fruition. The iwi would take major steps to cut its greenhouse gas emissions, embrace renewable energy and reduce its overall impact over the next nine years, she said. That included hydrogen prototypes for its transport company and solar for its marae. “If you’re a member of Ngāi Tahu ... you hold us to account quite strongly. There’s no tolerance of greenwashing, there’s no greenwashing in the iwi of Ngāi Tahu. “We’ve got to have tangible actions that we can demonstrate to our people that we are making change.”

WE ALSO SELL A WIDE RANGE OF CAR PARTS FOR MOST MAKES AND MODELS INCLUDING ENGINES, WINDSCREENS AND TYRES
“Looking at the boat, we’ve used one of our older hulls so to look at it you wouldn’t know any different from one of our current boats. “It’s really when you get onboard and you have a look down the back where the passenger pod used to be, you’ll see the three big battery boxes. “Then if you lift the engine hatch up, you’ve got the two electric motors in there which are so small compared to an internal combustion engine. “However, around the back of the boat, you’ve got the same two jet units so from afar, you really can’t tell much difference at all.” While electric jet boats would not be ready for commercial guests for several years, Ngāi Tahu said they were putting in the mahi to tackle the effects of climate change.

tacc.nz Events back on track, post Covid by Paul Taylor
Queenstown Lakes residents and tourists have some stellar events to look forward to over the next 12 months. The industry, which was hobbled by pandemic restrictions, is returning to full steam. And that’s good news for the district’s economy. Queenstown Lakes District Council has confirmed $527,000 in grants funding from its contestable fund for 2022-23. They’re expected to generate a whopping $102 million in economic impact. Twenty sports, arts, music and culture events have been supported. Five will receive more than $30k from QLDC. They are LUMA Southern Light Project, New Zealand Open Golf, Winter Games and Wānaka’s Festival of Colour and Crankworx. Other events, receiving less than $30k, include Arrowtown Autumn Festival, Challenge Wānaka, Lake Hayes A&P Show, Michael Hill International Violin competition, Motatapu and Winter Pride. QLDC Relationship Manager Arts and Events Jan Maxwell says: “It’s great to support a range of organisations, both big and small. “The flow-on effects of these events are great for Louise Ferguson, dropping into the wall of sound at Crankworx Summer Series in Queenstown in December 2021. local communities as well as bringing people to Photo: Crankworx the district, raising our profile, and supporting the economy. These events really contribute to the vibrancy of Queenstown “From accommodation providers to sound engineers and hospitality, Lakes. events stimulate all corners of our economy and provide the opportunity to “It’s been a challenging couple of years for event organisers, and we’re proud showcase just how special this area is as a destination,” Boult says. to provide our support to organisations that help make the Queenstown “Kudos should be given to the event organisers who have hung in during Lakes District an exciting place to be for both locals and visitors alike.” the tough times and re-emerged to provide these fantastic experiences.” Mayor Jim Boult added that it was wonderful to welcome back so many QLDC’s Events Funding Panel, which consisted of councillors Craig high-quality events. Ferguson, Penny Clark, Quentin Smith and Heath Copland, considered the applications in late May.
Arts+Culture Good fashion takes time by Jessica Allen
Head to Queenstown Market any Saturday and you’ll find Jessica Simpson from So Sloe, a locally made clothing brand. Simpson is going against the fast fashion movement and providing one-of-a-kind garments.
“It’s a good way for some of the local talent to get showcased. It’s such a cool little market and the fact that everything there is handmade by the person at the store means there’s no confusion about where things are coming from, it’s really transparent,” says Simpson.
While more of us are becoming aware of fast fashion and the impacts it has environmentally, the industry is set to reach new profit heights of almost $100 billion this year. Simpson is helping to combat the problem by producing high-quality clothing and accessories out of her studio space here in Queenstown. Building So Sloe was a gradual process that started out of a passion.
You can find So Sloe every Saturday at Queenstown Markets along the waterfront at Earnslaw Park. You can also find her clothing online through social media or at sosloe.com
“I’ve always loved sewing and being creative – it was my favourite subject in school. I went and did lots of travelling and couldn’t really take a sewing machine with me, I was living away for around eight years or so. Then I moved to Edinburgh about four years ago and was kind of settled there for a little while, so I bought a sewing machine and started making my own clothes. “It was just a slow process of friends being like ‘oh, will you make me one’ or ‘will you make me this,’ and then I just kept doing that. Once I moved to Queenstown my friends were like ‘you should do the craft market,’ and that’s pretty much where it started,” says Simpson. Some of what Simpson creates includes hand-crocheted beanies made from New Zealand wool, dungarees, pinafore dresses, and fleeces. Each item of clothing at So Sloe is made from a custom pattern created by Simpson – simply downloading patterns online would mean she wouldn’t be allowed to sell them. She also sources materials from anywhere she can and has created designs out of some interesting materials. “The wool is New Zealand, the smocks are 100% cotton, most of the dresses are 100% cotton, and the fleece is poly fleece, and I get them from all over the shop. Sometimes online, also any fabric store I go into I’m always looking for anything new, and sometimes thrift stores – I’ve bought bed sheets before – but literally anywhere I can find a fabric, I will buy it.” Simpson has been attending Queenstown Markets for one year now, where all items are created by hand. Due to Covid the market has been quieter than usual but is picking up again now with the borders opening.

Angus runs again by Paul Taylor
Glenorchy’s Al Angus has announced he’ll take a fourth run at becoming Queenstown’s mayor. Angus received 1,344 votes when he stood in 2019, losing out to Jim Boult, who retained the mayoralty with 6,175.

That was slightly better than his 2016 bid, which saw 739 people tick his box, when Boult was elected for the first time with 6,050. He also lost out to Vanessa van Uden in a two-horse race in 2013, losing by more than 4500 votes. This time, Boult has announced he won’t be seeking a third term. Instead, Angus faces former Labour Party general election candidate Jon Mitchell, Startup Queenstown Lakes CEO and former lawyer Olivia Wensley, and serving Queenstown Lakes councillor Glyn Lewers. Angus, who’s lived in the district since the 1980s, is standing on an antiThree Waters platform and also wants to tackle perceived problems at Queenstown Lakes District Council. He’s set out five key election promises including “use every tool and mechanism available to retain total control of our water infrastructure and completely reverse this council’s support for the three waters theft”. Serving councillor Quentin Smith has already corrected him on that point on Facebook, however, saying QLDC “have not supported the proposed model of reform at any time”. Angus also wants a “comprehensive and transparent investigation” into the Lakeview sale, including “who benefited either directly or indirectly”. He wants to investigate how council was driven to sign an “illegal lease” of Wanaka airport. And he plans to “suspend all consultancy contracts, asses them for value, and again see who is financially benefiting, either directly or indirectly”, if elected. “It certainly doesn’t appear to be the ratepayers”, he says. Finally, he wants to “identify and lock in for future generations the immense environmental recovery that has been an accidental upside of the Covid”.

HONOURING KING OF THE RADIO WAVES – SAVING THE STATION
Chas’s wife Steph in his happy place at the Glenorchy Country controls. The station is now running automatically and with help from amazing friends
Chas Drader doing what he did best
by Sue Fea He was Queenstown’s unofficial ‘King of the Radiowaves’ and now, two years on from his death Chas Drader’s homegrown Glenorchy Country radio station is still keeping the crooners happy, just minus his deep, velvety tones. While wife Steph Drader, a long-time local real estate agent and property manager with Professionals Real Estate, says she’s always been quite shy behind a microphone, but with a little help from Chas’s friends Glenorchy Country still hits the airwaves 24/7, keeping locals in the loop. “It’s all automated now, thanks to Dave Mclaren who’s always on there from up in the North Island adjusting things and setting everything up,” says Steph. A local legend in radio, Chas had many fans and friends after working in the industry for almost 60 years. The couple had just sold their Glenorchy home, signing the deal the day before Chas passed away unexpectedly. Steph says she had intended to close down the station, which Chas had run out of their home lounge. “He had the transmitter in the garage, wires up through the roof and down into the garage,” she smiles. When it came time to turn Glenorchy Country off the air, Steph says she just couldn’t do it. It was Chas’s passion and had become an integral part of the Glenorchy community for 12 years. “People were asking me around Glenorchy, ‘What’s going to happen to the radio station?’”
So Steph, with help from Chas’s other good mates, Queenstown radio announcer Al Davis and Barry Patterson from Dunedin, who installed the transmitters for Radio NZ, and the local community, built a new home for the station on their subdivided property. “I took photos of all the connections.” “The desktop with its mountains of wires just lifted off and I put it on the back of my 4-wheeler and rode it down the hill to its new little studio (a garden shed),” she says. “Chas would’ve just loved it.” The station was only off air for 24 hours during the move and while it’s all automated with radio geeks tuning in from around the world Glenorchy Country has featured many a local identity. High profile broadcasters Emma Lange and Andrew Patterson, who once worked with Chas at Queenstown’s Q92FM, another station Chas founded, have done stints in Glenorchy as have a few locals, including Kate Scott. “Grant Stewart does voices for our ads and sweepers, production engineer Jonathan Cloudesley produces and Ferg (Queenstown radio identity) and Andrew (Patterson). Al Davis has also announced for us,” says Steph. “Many of the wonderful staff that Chas has trained over the years have pitched in.”
Well known Queenstown DJs Andrew Patterson (left) and ‘Ferg’ Ferguson during a breakfast stint for Glenorchy Country in the new garden studio
A local community trust gave money to purchase a Starlink internet satellite dish. “We’ve had so much help from the community. So many people helped build the station and we’re an integral part of Glenorchy in an emergency,” says Steph. “We get a lot of power outages up here and I’m all set up for a Civil Defence emergency. If the power goes out we have a generator that automatically kicks in.” Chas, who began his radio career behind the mike at 17, launched Queenstown’s first FM radio station, Ski Radio, before launching and owning Q92FM with Steph and partners. The partners were eventually bought out and Chas and Steph sold that station to Canwest. “I think he’d be pretty proud of me for keeping Glenorchy Country going, but it’s just missing a bit more human touch,” says Steph, who’s keen to hear from anybody who wants to become a radio announcer. QLDC Libraries Librarian Profile
Lakes Weekly Bulletin and Queenstown Lakes Libraries are profiling our librarians. This month we are profiling atacha who is the Digital ervices ibrarian at Queenstown ibrary.
@qldclibraries
Queenstown Lakes District Libraries
Kia Ora! I’m Natacha, the Digital Services Librarian based in Queenstown Library. I’m responsible for things along the lines of our website, all our fantastic eResources, and our newsletter. In a previous life I was a chartered accountant, climbing the career ladder with my sights set on the top – I even went and did an MBA – and somehow got through! After 10 years however, I decided it was time to jump off that ladder and try something new. After a year’s stint as a photographer and Uber driver, I left Brisbane in 2019; hopped across the Tasman and started my new life. I started my new life in housekeeping and tourism but ‘the virus that shall not be named’ put a spanner in the works and like many I was back to square one. Looking back, I’m grateful, as my partner and I wouldn’t have started our own business, and I wouldn’t have ended up at the library. I really feel like I won the job lottery here – it’s hands down the best job in Queenstown!
I was originally drawn to Queenstown by the mountains and pro imity to nature. I find it humbling to be reminded of how I am just a tiny blip in the grand scheme of things. I’ve forgotten this at various points in my life but living here makes it impossible to forget! My love of nature also drives me to do my best to try and protect it – if you take anything away from reading this, it’s that saving our planet should be our number one priority! Now onto the fun stuff – books! The following books have shaped the person I am today – I know it’s corny but they really have become a part of me I hope you find one that also resonates with you.
The Future We Choose: Surviving the Climate Crisis by Christiana Figueres
We can survive the climate crisis. This book shows us how. A must read!
Vesper Flights by Helen Macdonald
Presents a collection of essays about humanity’s relationship with nature. The author had a way with words that resonated deeply with me. We share a few similar experiences and she articulated some of the feelings I had about these experiences in such an eloquent way.
Wild by Cheryl Strayed
The story of a 1,100 mile solo hike that broke down a young woman reeling from catastrophe - and built her back up again. An honest, raw, and touching story. If you love the mountains I have a feeling you’ll love this book.
Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton
A lost father, a mute brother, a junkie mum, a heroin dealer for a stepfather and a notorious crim for a babysitter. A story of brotherhood, true love and the most unlikely of friendships. This book made me gasp, cry, and laugh – it’s easily one of my favourite books. It’s not an easy read, it gets very dark, but it’s so beautifully written.
How to Tell Depression to Piss Off by James Withey
This is not a self-help book; it’s an account of what it’s like to live with depression. Written by someone who’s been down the same road provides a sense of comfort. At whatever point you’re at with your depression, this book can help and provide some laughs along the way - hooray! - because you really need it with this bloody illness.

HAYLEY STEVENSON BEATING THE BLOKES
A fourth generation Queenstowner, Hayley Stevenson can pitch it against any bloke in the cow shed or on the motor racing track. She’s pretty hard to beat in business too. Raised on a dairy farm in Mokotua, near Invercargill, Hayley, born in 1970, was the youngest of four kids – Queenstown developer Johnny Stevenson, her big brother. Hayley’s parents, both raised in the Wakatipu, were extremely hardworking and everybody pitched in, with Hayley and Johnny on duty in the milking shed. “Mum and Dad were real community people and always helping others wherever it was needed. That’s just what we grew up with,” says Hayley. High school years boarding at Southland Girls High School’s Enwood Hostel were fun until Hayley was forced to leave the hostel. “I got caught smuggling fish and chips in through the window for the girls with Carol Hayes from Tokonui,” she grins. “It followed many ‘final warnings’ from the matron.” Hayley had refused to ‘rat’ on Carol who’d managed to escape punishment. “Dad was secretly proud of me for not ratting on my mates.” Keen to head to University to study accountancy, Hayley missed out on that privilege, which she jokingly blames on the hijinks of two of her elder siblings. After two years working at Craig Printing in Invercargill Hayley, aged 19, was off to see the world, but only got as far as Perth. A job as receptionist for a property management company soon grew to manager of two property management offices for the company where she worked for six years. “I loved Perth and had no intention of coming back.” However, after being home for Johnny’s wedding Hayley was offered a role managing Queenstown Accommodation Centre by
Locations Real Estate. “Henk (Hoogvliet) sent me a fax when I got back to Perth asking if I’d manage it for them,” says Hayley. “It was a blessing in disguise. Not long after that Dad (Noel Stevenson) was diagnosed with cancer.”
Noel’s father had been a Crown Terrace farmer, living in what was once Walnut Cottage at Lake Hayes. The property, now Akarua Wines, remains in the family. Hayley’s mother, Alma’s parents ran the former Hi-Way Diner at Frankton. “Dad and his mates had owned land at Millbrook Corner and he sold that to buy the farm at Mokotua. It was rough farming down there and Mum and Dad had no money,” she says. “They started with a one acre paddock, broken in on 1000 acres – absolute workers. Johnny and I were labour units on the farm. It was tough, but good.” Their parents instilled good values and ethics. New clothes came from the ‘Nearly New’ second hand shop and for pocket money Hayley and her brother and sisters dried and sold sphagnum moss and caught eels in the creek for live export. Plucking dead sheep was also a good earner. Hayley represented Southland in various netball teams in her youth, but it was a ‘Father and Son’ Air Training Corp small bore rifle shooting competition where she made her mark. “I kicked up a fuss as they weren’t going to let me enter because I was a girl, then Dad and I won – each by one point.” Invercargill Mayor Eve Poole presented the trophy. “Dad could not have been more proud of me.” Here she also gained her solo glider pilot’s licence, flew in Hercules – all while still at high school. Husband Hamish later learned he’d met his match on the Go-Kart track too. “We raced around the region and I protested again that I couldn’t race in the Men’s Division, instead of the Women’s,” says Hayley. “The executive held a big meeting, all to no avail, so friend Paul Ritchie dressed me up in his gear and I raced in the Men’s Division in Gore and placed second,” she says. “At the prizegiving Paul said, ‘It wasn’t me. It was Hayley’, and handed me the trophy.” Despite some sexist
Hayley, Hamish and James enjoy some skiing at Round Hill Ski Area, Tekapo, in 2019
comments, in the end Hayley was awarded an exemption card and won the Men’s South Island Go Karting Championships. She’s clocked up many a multisport race, even the gruelling Coast to Coast, prior to having son James, now 13. Also a winner in business, Hayley managed Queenstown Accommodation Centre for 10 years, buying Doug Brown’s Queenstown Real Estate share, later selling out and launching her own property management company in Wanaka. “In the early days everybody came in and paid their rent in cash. We’d walk to the bank with $40,000 in cash in our handbags, at the same time every day,” she says. “We dealt with fires, floods, people locked in and out, keeping warm in spa pools while we got there, some very funny situations.” Thankfully, tenants are great nowadays, but one winter years ago tenants had been a bit skint so headed up Queenstown Hill to catch dinner. “They had dead goats hanging from the kitchen rafters.” Eight years ago her now award-winning Housemart Queenstown was born and has since scooped more than 30 national property management awards – a major highlight. Housemart took out New Zealand Property Management Company of the Year four times, and last year won Queenstown Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year and REINZ’s NZ Award for Business Innovation.

“We want to be the best, and enjoy winning. It keeps you motivated if you’re always striving to improve.”
