Seeing in winter with a bang

As the new Chief Executive (CE) of Destination Queenstown, it is great to see the town bustling and vibrant again with domestic and international visitors enjoying our incredible part of the world. With direct flights from Australia recently starting back up, I am sure I am not alone in relishing the sound of Australian accents on our streets. That, combined with a decent base layer of snow on our ski fields, forward bookings are looking strong, and we are set for a busy three weeks over the school holiday period. Queenstown has gone through a lot over the last two years and for many, this will be the shot in the arm that their business needs. For others, they may be feeling anxious about how to juggle visitor numbers with workforce challenges. With that in mind, we all need to be patient as operators work hard to plan ahead, ensure a consistent level of service and set operating hours, and manage their guests’ expectations. Things may take a little longer than they did before, but I am sure you will still enjoy an amazing experience. I also encourage you to get out and continue to support local. Brave the roadworks and visit a retailer or restaurant; try out an activity you have had on your bucket list for a while; or attend an event like the upcoming Welcome to Winter festivities on 7-10 July.

QEII chair Bruce Wills presented a photo of the stunning Remarkables Station to Jill and Dick Jardine last Thursday, after the couple officially handed over the 900-hectare property to the Trust. Read more on page 8.

Welcome to Winter is an opportunity for our local community to come together and celebrate all there is to love about the snowy season. The packed four-day schedule of events has been designed to bring people into the CBD and help support our hospitality and retail businesses. The highlight for me will be watching the fireworks display from the lakefront while I enjoy a glass of hot mulled wine. It is pretty special too that this year the fireworks have been incorporated into a fundraiser for the local fire brigade. Aside from the next few weeks where we will see increased numbers in town, it is likely to be a long road to recovery for our local tourism industry and wider business community. In my role as CE, I see two streams of work ahead for our region; retaining domestic visitation and building demand for international markets and launching into destination management and beginning our journey to regenerative tourism by 2030. This is to ensure our region is enhanced by tourism and that it benefits our environment, community and culture, as well as our economy. It is going to be a challenge but one I am excited to be a part of. Mat Woods - Destination Queenstown

Worst winter crisis in nearly 50 years by Sue Fea

It’s the worst staffing shortage veteran Queenstown operators have seen in nearly 50 years and local recruiting agencies and businesses are desperately struggling to fill masses of vacant positions this winter. Thrown into the mix is a critical shortage of worker accommodation, despite a huge chunk of the resort’s usual winter workers unable to return from overseas as usual. Both Coronet Peak and The Remarkables each had from 20 up to 30 of their ski area staff off sick or isolating last week, with either Covid or bad flu, or isolating because flatmates had Covid, managers say. Remarkables Ski Area manager Ross Lawrence says they’re relying on crossutilisation of staff to get through. It’s definitely an employee’s market with every business in town battling to woo staff. “Unfortunately some staff pick up a job and after a few days move on to other jobs. There’s certainly a lot of choice out there.” The situation was so tight last week that NZSki posted a ‘We’re doing our best for you. Please be patient’ notice last week. Coronet Peak Ski Area manager Nigel Kerr says he’s already way short on his normal full team, without daily absences thrown in. On the up side between 30 and 50 percent of skiers and snowboarders have been Australians with some early Australian state school holidays underway. Wai Hospitality Group co-owner Jan Rae says we’re in the worst staffing crisis she’s seen locally in 38 years in hospitality. “We’re about 20 staff short across three restaurants and have been for about a year.” Any working holiday people are “snapped up” quickly as every restaurant, bar and hotel is desperate. The few workers available are commanding higher hourly rates or incentives. She’s concerned business owners could burn out, working extremely long hours, trying to recruit staff, train staff and run shifts themselves. Business reputations could suffer if they can’t deliver a quality experience to guests, who deserve to be served and treated well, she says. It’s meant turning away business due to a lack of staff.

She wants residency pathways opened up to retain what skilled staff are here. District council or Central Government should also be taking over local Youth Hostels and hibernated backpacker lodges for worker accommodation, she says.

The Immigration ‘reset’ has put another hurdle in the way. “Just working out our obligations and working within new rules and timeframes has put extra pressure on business owners who don’t have the time or energy for anything new and extra.”

“Building rental worker accommodation should have been our shovel ready project for the town, rather than digging up streets and making town so messy and user unfriendly,” she says.

Queenstown needs way more than the current trickle of working holiday visa holders. “We’ve lost a huge amount of experience in all sectors and the rebuild of knowledge and expertise will take a very long time.”

With some hotels not yet fully operational and some hostels still closed, many Airbnbs are believed to be booked out until the end of August, placing unprecedented pressure on worker accommodation. NZSki’s recent move to lease a former YHA hostel in Shotover Street until mid-October for its staff has been hugely welcomed by staff and made a big dent in the problem, says Nigel. Housemart Queenstown director Hayley Stevenson says Tenancy Act changes introduced last year mean property owners can only move seasonal tenants out if they’re permanently moving back into their house, selling or renovating. “That’s taken so many sixmonth fixed term rentals out of the market and moved them into Airbnb,” she says. The situation would be even more critical if Queenstown had the staff it needed right now, says Hayley. NZSki normally employs between 400 to 500 staff all up locally during winter and ceo Paul Anderson says half of them return each year from overseas and have accommodation sorted. “They’re not here this year so we have twice the number looking.” The 45 extra beds available in

Page 5

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN the leased hostel have been a huge help and NZSki has 24 beds in staff houses off Gorge Road. As is usual some winter workers are staying long-term in what backpackers’ hostels are open, and are believed to be bunking down with friends during busy weekends, like the recent Mardis Gras event weekend, when an influx of visitors arrived. Addstaff owner Kim Hamilton says the desperation for staff, especially in hotels and restaurants, all business sectors, is huge. “We get calls every day and can only fill 25 percent of casual hospitality roles, when normally we’d have queues of winter workers down the stairs filling every job.” She’s super concerned for the July school holidays approaching. “Businesses are already stressed to the max, trying everything they can to find staff,” says Kim. “Hospitality runs on backpackers and they’re not here. We definitely need housekeepers, kitchenhands, labourers, car groomers. Four or five rental car companies have us looking.” Businesses are being hit hard with higher wage demands and huge living cost increases. They’re being forced to negotiate especially for temporary roles, says Kim. “We really need working visa people to fill all of these jobs.”

Queenstown Chamber of Commerce ceo Ruth Stokes says there’s been strong interest in a dedicated website (workqueenstown. co.nz) launched recently to attract Aussie workers across the ditch. “We’ve developed it off the back of Tourism NZ’s campaign into Australia, promoting New Zealand working visa holidays in which Queenstown attracted by far and away the highest traffic,” says Ruth. The idea is to entice workers for the lifestyle in the wake of the current serious worker shortage. “It’s absolutely the worst Queenstown’s seen since 1974 when records started,” she says. “The demand for staff is huge.” “It’s the perfect storm – construction’s through the roof, tourism’s coming back. All industries are strong and crying out for people.”

Mayor Jim Boult’s delighted to see the return of international cricket to the resort town oval, regarded as one of the most picturesque cricket grounds in the world. “These two international matches will be great for the district’s cricket lovers and will also go some way to help local businesses and tourism operators continue their recovery from a difficult couple of years. “Cricket is fantastic to watch at John Davies Oval which, set against the stunning backdrop of the Remarkables, might just be the most beautiful ground in the world. “There’s no better way to show hardened cricket fans and anyone wanting to come along to watch their first live game what our district has to offer. We look forward to welcoming the teams and their supporters, along with everyone else visiting the district this summer and Easter.” Both the White Ferns and the Black Caps will head overseas to contest their T20 World Cups this cricket season. The White Ferns’ match against Bangladesh in December will serve as an early warm up, before they head for South Africa in January, 2023, while the Black Caps have a shorter trip to Australia for their T20 WC, in October 2022. Six teams will also tour NZ; the Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, England and Sri Lanka men’s teams, and the Bangladesh women. Tickets for both Queenstown matches are on sale now at tickets.nzc.nz

Jill and Dick Jardine with former QEII chair James Gould, who started the process of putting the land under Trust ownership, after receiving a phone call from Dick inviting him to come down to Queenstown for talks.

Remarkable gift to New Zealand by Paul Taylor

After 100 years in the ownership of the Jardine family, Remarkables Station has been officially handed over to the QEII National Trust.

care for the environment in a practical and pragmatic way, while keeping the magnificent backdrop and asset for the people of Queenstown.

Dick and Jillian Jardine announced in 2020 they intended to gift the 900 hectares, at the foot of the Remarkables mountain range, to the Trust, to be held in perpetuity.

“Despite the exciting future this property has, I can’t imagine how hard it would have been for Dick and Jillian to make this significant and bold decision.

On Thursday, QEII Chair Bruce Wills was in town to accept the “extraordinary act of generosity to New Zealand”.

“Your incredible generosity and foresight for the future generation is admirable. I can’t speak highly enough about their commitment to this community and this country.”

Dick Jardine said it had been an emotional time for his family, knowing they would not be the custodians of the farming land for much longer. “Remarkables Station has been part of our family’s lives and livelihoods for a century now, since 1922,” Dick said. “When my family first started working this amazing, beautiful piece of land, it was not for the faint of heart. It was rugged country and the many people who have spent time here have experienced it all; from isolation to loneliness, frustration, when things go wrong, to the wonderment and awe of the sheer beauty of this special place.” When he was a boy, he said, Queenstown was only a few houses and businesses across the lake, with a population of 1100 people. In recent years, the scale of development has been “immense”. “And while much of it has been done well, and has been good for the area, as we looked around Jillian and I became increasingly sure that we wanted to reserve some of the beauty of this place for future generations to enjoy, as we have been so lucky to.” QEII has established a separate entity, the Remarkables Station National Trust Board, to manage the property. It has a 50-year plan to protect the landscape and biodiversity, on the western side of the iconic Remarkables mountain range, near Jack’s Point, while also opening it up to more public access. The gifted property is freehold land, currently leased as a well-run farm, and that will continue for the foreseeable future. Bruce Wills, speaking to guests who gathered at the couple’s home to mark the hand over, said: “We’re excited about using this property as a flagship to demonstrate how other land owners can protect and

Wills said the QEII mission was in inspire private landowners to protect and enhance open spaces of cultural and ecological significance. “Almost 70% of New Zealand is in private land ownership, so protecting heritage and biodiversity on private land it critical to preserving our history and reversing the decline of indigenous biodiversity.” Nearby Kawarau Falls Station is also now protected from development, following a decision by the owners, the Mee family, to place a QEII covenant on 170 hectares of the property. It will remain in private ownership, however.

Winter Gardening Well it was the autumn of splendid Autumns we just had, my memory can be short, I’m sure these were the kind of autumns we had 25 years ago. I’m sure I just keep repeating myself too... but I’d be happy if every autumn was like this last one.

extra love. Check out the compost how to pdf’s here. https://www. wastebusters.co.nz/compost/ 6.

Got a worm farm? They don’t like winter, it’s far too cold for them unless you pop them in a warm place. Consider using a ‘seedling heat pad’ in the main compartment. (they’re completely sealed waterproof units) This comes with a warning. Best if the worm farm is in a garage or shed, no power cables/plugs are able to get wet. You can put the heat pad on a timer to come on during the night. Pop the heat pad on top of the eating zone. Watch those worms love you back with much improved eating of your food scraps over the chilly winter months.

7.

Time to give young Apple and pear trees some training and a little pruning. Keep a central leader and use string to tie down those young side branches to a 90degree angle. Remember the ‘3 D’ removing diseased, dying and dead wood.

8.

Love those fruit trees by giving them some manure and a woodchip mulch. You can lay cardboard down first if you have grass to get rid of. Then put more manure than wood chips onto the cardboard. You can also plant some comfrey root about 1m from the trunk to start creating a living mulch around your fruit trees. Other plants to use for living mulches under fruit trees can include Globe artichoke, fennel and lavender.

9.

All this talk of fruit tree love, how about planting a fruit tree if you have the space. If your garden is space hungry consider espaliering a fruit tree on a North ish facing wall or fence. There’s also lots of miniature fruit trees available now you can give a try in a free corner too.

Now it definitely feels like winter as I look upon my rapidly shrinking by the hour wood pile. Matariki has passed, the days are getting longer and there’s only 9 weeks and 1 days till spring. I celebrate September 1st as a milestone, then I celebrate again with the spring Equinox. This year it’s the 23rd of September. So what’s there to think about in these coming depths of winter weeks in your Gardening and composting world if you find yourself with some free time. Here’s my to do list for the next few weeks. 1.

2.

Rake what’s left of them leaves, this includes your cabbage tree leaves and make a ‘Leaf Mould Compost’ It doesn’t get any easier the recipe is simple. Fill up a compost bay or compost bin with leaves. Keep shoving and pushing them in till you can’t squeeze any more in!! Either allow some winter rains or give them a good watering then cover up. Grab a handful of compost worms and add to the mix. Keep an eye during the year on moisture levels. It’s pretty much ready to use next autumn. To upsell this compost and speed up decomposition and increase nutrient content you can add about 25% manure to the bin. Mix the manure evenly through the whole pile. Time to tidy up last year’s veggie beds if you haven’t already put them to sleep or planted a green winter manure (my current favourite is Broad Beans sow thickly). You could try some broad beans even now. They will germinate; it might take them a while to get going unless we have a warm winter. You can help them along by covering them with frost cloth on a frame. You don’t want the frost cloth touching the young plants as it can freeze and damage them.

3.

Putting a bed to sleep can be as simple as a 1 to 5cm layer of compost with a wood chip or straw mulch. Wood chips need to be from deciduous trees and ideally Ramial in nature. (Ramial wood chips are when the whole branch is chipped, big sticks, twigs and leaves are included. )

4.

Bury in the Bokashi. This is prime time Bokashi burying, it doesn’t get much better with most of your beds empty. Focus on filling up one bed at a time. Take note for the following season, this bed wants to be used for heavy feeders such as broccoli, pumpkins and corn. If you’re not using Bokashi and you’re a keen gardener you’re missing out big time, I promise you will grow the biggest bestest badass veggies of your life with this composting system.

5.

10. Berry bushes need your attention too at this time of year. Boysenberries/blackberries/logan etc need last years ‘fruiting wood’ cut out to the base leaving behind last season’s new growth to be put onto wires/trellises. Blueberries can be given a light prune removing any deadwood or branches crossing over. Currants can be pruned to a vase shape. Save those 20cm cuttings, pop them into a pot of potting mix 10cm in the soil and 10cm above the soil. You can put lots in one pot. Leave them in a warm spot in your garden so that you won’t forget them. Come Christmas you can lift them out gently and you will have a whole lot of new currant bushes for next to nothing to plant out or give as gifts. 11. It is good to keep beds mulched with straw or wood chips over winter. This prevents leaching of your valuable nutrients with the winter rains. This is also true all year round. Rain also causes soil compaction on the soil surface.

Make a compost pile or 2. Winter is a great time to make compost piles in one hit, there’s all the garden scraps you’ve tidied up, excess leaves that didn’t make it into your leaf mould and an abundance of horse manure in the district often in piles or bags ready for you to use. Made now you will have compost by Christmas ready for that next round of planting or to top up around plants that need some

12. Lastly if you haven’t already, it’s time to get those big garlic cloves in the ground. A handful of compost in the hole with each large clove planted about a 10cm’s apart.

SAVE. 40% OFF Dear Mr Brightside, I’m thinking about running for Mayor. I have ideas about how the place should be run. I want to make a difference and return Queenstown to the locals but I don’t know... I don’t think I’m that popular? I fear of putting myself out there to just get torn to shreds. What do you think... is it worth it? Should I run?

CONVENTIONAL WALL MOUNTED PANEL HEATERS Quiet, even heat distribuition with smart control unit

0800 4 STEREO (0800 478 373) Oh boy. Mayor is a big undertaking. Have you really thought about what the role entails? It’s not a mere vocal outcry of your opinions. Sure, it can seem like a popularity contest but once you get in you better know how to dance. You don’t want to go thud, thud, thud down the stairs but I tell you what... everyone’s anticipating it. You have to lead within the bounds of the law, know how to work it. Knowhow to the peddle moves and write up reports to edge your cause little closer to progress. You have to make a multitude of decisions on matters that concern the public. Some aren’t even on your list of To-do’s but hey, they’re up for review so you need to address it. You can’t just rub your hands, make a snap decision, click your back and move on to the next thing. Nooo. These public matters are thrown at many eyes; public consultation, independent boards, regional governance, national governance, the round table for your council to vote on. Even then, it may go through another process of review before anything can start. Inside the tent of influence is the total suffocation of bureaucracy. In a leadership role such as this, you have to transform to a superhuman level. You cannot let emotions cloud the matter at hand. You must pivot and be capable of change, even changing your initial beliefs. Just like buying a car or talking about health matters, everybody has their own two cents to pass your way. Some even throw cents to make their opinion heard. Being an elected member of the public invites everybody to scrutinize your actions, others actions, personal judgement and yourself as a person. You’ll never make everyone satisfied. You’ve got to have pretty tough skin to become this figure of reliance. To be constantly up to date with tentacles feeding into news and politics at every waking moment. I call it a thankless job of necessary responsibility. You have to think, ‘how much power of influence do I have?’ Am I better to stay out of the tent? Have the freedom of being a heckler? To bark my views in protest. To rally collective political movement among peers. Freedom to be you, your voice but with no real influence. Others do make the call. Or do you want influence but feel slightly gagged by your rights to freedom of speech.

Funding windfall for environmental projects by Paul Taylor

Queenstown Lakes environmental organisations will receive roughly half of the $443,000 in grants handed out by Otago Regional Council this year.

Photo: Timo Volz / Unsplash

Twenty-five projects are being funded by ORC’s ECO Fund and incentive funds, with grants ranging from $1000 to $48,883. They include 11 in Queenstown Lakes, with many of them getting substantial amounts. The Wakatipu Reforestation Trust will receive $45,733 for environmental education, while the Southern Lakes Sanctuary $26,125 for Mohua/ yellowhead for translocation, helicopters and bait stations. Friends of Tucker Beach Wildlife Management Reserve have been granted $33,000 for rabbit management, Mana Tahuna will receive 15,000 for predator trap lines around Lake Hayes, and Arrowtown Choppers will spend its $11,706 on native regeneration. Councillor and ECO Fund Assessment Panel chair Michael Deaker says: “This year was the biggest ever in terms of the number of community groups applying and the amount of money distributed,” Deaker says “I’m more impressed, every year, with the quality and commitment of these groups, even in our most remote locations.” There was a record 53 applications submitted from organisations requesting a total $1.1 million from the $470,000 available. During the past four years, a total $1.19 million has now been distributed from the ECO Fund and other incentives for 101 projects, underpinning the environmental work of a total 78 organisations.

“It was especially satisfying this year, for the first time, to grant money to communities seeking sustained rabbit management, and more native planting for water quality and to replace wilding pines,” Deaker adds. He says every one of the 53 proposals was “painstakingly assessed” by four expert staff, four councillors and a Kāi Tahu kaumatua. The successful 2022 applicants ranged from Dunedin and Oamaru to Mt Aspiring and Queenstown and in the south, to Tautuku and the Catlins area.

COMMUNITY NOTES Your Saving Grace Personal Care in your Space by Sue Fea

There’s been a big demand for some ‘saving grace’ lately from the team at Your Saving Grace which offers in home help, care and companionship.

Owner and long-time local Kirsten Dennison took over the reins of the business in February this year when she bought it from Karen Soundy, who founded it in 2013. Your Saving Grace helps people to live independently in the comfort of their own home and Kirsten says the needs have been far and wide since she took over, right in the midst of the Omicron outbreak. It was a whole new ball game for Kirsten who has an extensive finance and banking background, but her heart strings were pulling her in a different direction. “Caring for people has always formed a very big part of my values and so when this opportunity arose I jumped on it,” says Kirsten, who for years has volunteered as a supportive carer for the local Cancer Society. She is also a Wakatipu St John area volunteer and treasurer of the Arrowtown RSA. Going the extra mile is never a problem. “I have eight staff and we’ve been a lot busier than I anticipated,” says Kirsten. “We do everything from temporary in home care for the likes of post-operative patients to helping visitors on holiday with disabled or elderly family members.” With the loneliness and isolation of the past two years Kirsten’s finding companionship is a huge aspect of what many clients are after, especially those who are older. “We do a lot of cooking for people, usually in their homes, and if people want us to we will stay and eat dinner with them just for company,” she says. “Companionship is a huge one, whether that’s just doing a crossword with someone or exercising with them.” Care and services are tailored to meet individual needs. “Sometimes we may need to do light household chores, or do the grocery shopping for clients.” Most clients are 50 and over, but so are the Your Saving Grace staff, and Kirsten says that helps. “It’s good to have that maturity and reliability. The eldest of our staff is an 82-year-old retired nurse who specialises in “living in” with clients for a period of time. It suits her lifestyle.” The business is growing rapidly as word of mouth spreads and people are keen to be in their own home, especially during Covid times. Staff test for Covid-19 regularly and fortunately they have not had major absence problems. She’s been so busy that Kirsten’s thinking of expanding the business to Cromwell and Alexandra after becoming aware of a demand for a similar service there. “My mum lives in Alexandra and recently had a hip operation. I’d have loved access to something like this over there to help her.” Kirsten says demand is likely to continue as people live longer and seek more of a personalised service. She also encourages clients to make the most of any government-funded home help assistance as well. “They’ve worked hard all their lives and it’s something they’re entitled to,” she says.

Personally, she’s getting so much satisfaction from her new role. “I love caring for people. There’s so much you can learn from them too. It’s so fulfilling, much more so than punching numbers,” she says. To get in touch: https://www.yoursavinggrace.co.nz

SNOW MACHINE FESTIVAL HAS DROPPED EXCLUSIVE LOCALS TICKETS Highly-anticipated music and après-ski festival, Snow Machine has released a limited number of hard-copy tickets, now available exclusively for Queenstown locals.

“With over 4,000 tickets and packages already sold to keen Aussies and Kiwis across the country, we anticipate these tickets will be snapped up just as fast,” he says.

In partnership with The Remarkables and Coronet Peak, the festival is heading to the alpine slopes of Queenstown from 7-10 September, bringing with it a line-up of Australasia’s best music talent for fourdays en-piste at both resorts and three enormous nights at the main stage arena in Queenstown.

So we’ve not only discounted our standard four-day pass, but we’ve also released the schedule for our three main stage events early in order to offer a single day ticket exclusively for locals.

The ticket release coincides with the opening of the festival’s new Church Street pop-up, a collaboration between Snow Machine and parent company Mountainwatch Travel, providing a local hub for all things Snow Machine and snow travel. The limited hard-copy tickets are now available to purchase exclusively from the pop-up, 15 Church Street Queenstown.

JULES TAPPER FLYING HIGH

A legendary veteran pilot of 60-plus years, renowned for ‘bush flying’ and tourist flights, Jules Tapper had his sights set skyward from a very young age. Raised in Invercargill, he recalls his first, not so successful, flight. “I tried to fly off our shed roof using an umbrella when I was seven, which landed me a good crack on the head when the umbrella turned inside out,” he grins. That wasn’t enough to deter him. At nine, Jules applied to join the Royal NZ Air Force. “They politely humoured me by writing back to my mother telling me to pass my secondary school exams and gain a trade, stay fit then reapply.” He did just that and by 17 had gained his private pilot’s licence with help from a post-World War II 50 pound ($100) subsidy scheme set up to have a pilot pool in case of further conflict. “It cost 150 pounds and I got 50 pounds from my mother for passing my University Entrance at John McGlashan College.” In 1963 Jules bought his first plane – a Tiger Moth, for 365 pounds, moving onto a Piper Super Cub in 1965. After studying science at university it became clear where his passion still lay. “I’d always wanted to fly. I’d watched the birds and thought, “That would be marvellous.’” At university sometimes he’d spend three pounds an hour hiring a plane, with his mates subsidising trips to Invercargill and Queenstown. Jules believed his future work should include all of his passions and by 1969 he and Invercargill business partner Viv Allott had started the world renowned Hollyford Valley Guided Walk. Customers could walk out from Martin’s Bay, or fly out in Jules’ trusty 6-seater Cessna 185. It was beautiful unchartered backcountry. “Initially we had to build or improve the airstrips and the lodges, flying everything into the backcountry.” That business eventually progressed to subsidiary, Hollyfordair Travel, taking passengers

into the remote Hollyford Martins Bay area in 1975. Jules and Viv ran their Hollyford adventures for 28 years before selling up. Ngai Tahu Tourism still operates the tours in the area. It was a wonderful way to combine his love of flying, tramping, jetboating, fishing, hunting and cooking with a bit of building thrown in, all with many memorable guests.

DIY skills were a must. Jules’ father owned a vehicle franchise and Jules and his chopper on a retrieval mission in the West Coast bush motor engineering business in Southland so he became an accomplished tinkerer. “If Just being airborne was never enough for Jules. something broke in there you had to fix it He took up gliding in 1965, as an early member yourself.” Wife of 57 years, Jenny, would often of the Southland Gliding Club, before advancing be on the RT radio back home with a specialist to choppers, larger planes and paragliders after or tradesman talking Jules through any difficult an exciting flight with his son Angus in Austria. Angus flew for Hollyfordair and Mount Cook job. One of Jules’ funniest memories was of ‘Dolly’, a Airlines. faithful mare owned by Murray Gunn of Hollyford Camp that they used for a year as a packhorse until horses became banned by the Park Board. Dolly died eventually and fell into the river but jammed on top of a boulder decaying badly under the Morraine Creek Swing Bridge. The local Ministry of Works boys were called in. “They decided to blow Dolly off the boulder with gelignite. Instead they blew Dolly right through the bridge overhead destroying it.”

Jules has also done his share of fixed wing deer recovery flying. “One day a chopper pilot was flying some gutted deer stropped below the chopper and didn’t realise he’d hooked the guy loading them up by his boots on lift off. They had hooked on the horn of a chamois and he was dangling high in the sky,” says Jules. Naturally the pilot was overweight and had to do a run on landing before button off. A true Southern Man, the shooter brushed himself off and carried on. A keen skier, Jules met wife Jenny at the Parawa Pub, on his way home from a Queenstown skiing trip. At 21 they married. Their daughter Suzanne is married to bungy pioneer AJ Hackett, while son Angus runs a tandem paragliding/hang gliding operation. Jenny was a qualified pilot also so adventure is firmly entrenched in this family.

Jules in Taieri in 1962 just after he’d been on an aerobatic instructional flight

While every pilot has tales of near misses to tell, Jules says you get older and wiser. Aircraft and helicopters have been a mode of transport for the Tappers for many years. He’s always owned either an aircraft, or since 1995, his Robinson R22 helicopter.

Jules spent his last 11 business years with the Mount Cook Group and subsidiaries, most recently as Regional Manager South Island. It involved a huge variety of work with the airline, flightseeing, ski areas, coachlines and other operations. A great end to an exciting and colourful career.

By the time he retired in 1999, he’d flown over 130 different types of aircraft. Even now, aged 78, Jules is still active - after 31 years as founding chairman of the Lakes District Air Rescue Trust. Substantial fundraising to support this essential service has been extremely gratifying. The world’s far more “PC” these days, says Jules, who’s renowned for taking on bureaucracy when it’s needed. “Much of what I reminisce about could never happen today.” Together with the late Jim Buckham and Carlton Campbell, Jules fought successfully to have mountain flying hours included in private pilot’s licence requirements. His legendary services to NZ tourism, aviation, volunteer business mentoring and other community affairs saw him conferred an Officer of NZ Order of Merit in 2010. “I’ve been lucky that I’ve always had an inbuilt curiosity for the unusual and the interesting. This cocktail of aspiration has taken me all over the world.”

Just over 1000 people with working holiday visas arrive in New Zealand Only 10 percent of the recently approved Working Holiday Visa holders had arrived in Aotearoa by the middle of last month. People have been able to apply for a Working Holiday Visa and travel to New Zealand from 14 March. At the time, businesses hoped for enough people to come through to help ease the pressures caused by widespread staffing shortages. Since then, Immigration New Zealand had received 15,695 applications up to 14 June. Of those, 10,146 had been approved and 1054 visa holders had since arrived. Border and Visa Operations general manager Nicola Hogg said the visas were being processed as quickly as possible, with the vast majority being completed within 14 calendar days. “We process Working Holiday Scheme applications in date order of applications being submitted, therefore, no applications are fast tracked through the system. “However, where an application does not require further information and doesn’t have any character or health risks, they are processed faster.”

Applicant numbers for residence visas exceed government forecasts The number of migrants who have applied for residence under the oneoff settlement visa has now surpassed 200,000 people. When the policy was announced in September last year, the government estimated up to 165,000 migrants would be eligible in 110,000 applications.

IT problems plagued the start of the scheme. INZ said in May it expected to pick up the pace of decision-making as it was using a new Immigration Online platform in the second phase of applications, which were submitted in March. “Much of the processing, such as identity verification, assessing health evidence, or police checks that would previously be done by an individual immigration officer can now be done in a more efficient manner,” a spokesperson said. “These tasks can be done simultaneously, which allows for a greater number of applications to be processed within a given timeframe, before they are assigned to an individual immigration officer for a final assessment and decision. We expect the number of final decisions made on phase 2 applications to steadily increase across May.” In fact, numbers fell to 5900 in May - compared to 12,000 for each of the previous two months. Another 6500 had been approved by 19 June. Questions have also been raised about why applications from one nationality appear to take longer than others. Migrants who do not have residence are unable to buy houses and some cannot access free healthcare.

Those numbers now stand at 202,342 people in 100,508 applications. The discrepancy in the forecasts seems to have been caused by underestimating the average number of people in each application - INZ put it at 1.5 when it advised the government, but it is more than 2.

Overall since December, 57,000 people have been approved for residence under the 2021 policy and about 100 have been declined. by Gill Bonnett, RNZ Reporter

Applications close at the end of July, and most of them are due to be decided by the end of this year. But the former immigration minister, Kris Faafoi, last month stepped back that target, saying it would take an extra six months to complete 80 percent of them.

PRIDE PLEDGE TURNS FOUR by Jessica Allen

The Pride Pledge has just celebrated its fourth birthday. The pledge is a values-based commitment that organisations and individuals can take to demonstrate their dedication to the safety, visibility and inclusion of the LGBTTQIA+ (rainbow) community and workforce. It covers an array of businesses from bars to ski fields, airports, restaurants, hotels, public sector organisations and beyond. The initiative started in Queenstown when Martin King, the Director of Winter Pride, wanted to encourage businesses to be rainbow inclusive year-round. He used his experience and connections in his HR management role to research rainbow inclusivity and implement the pledge after he took over Gay Ski Week and rebranded it. “There was a festival in Queenstown called Gay Ski Week and the couple who owned that approached us and asked if we would be willing to take the festival over. My husband and I agreed and once we got it up and running decided to do a rebrand to Winter Pride – I decided to throw myself at it, and off the back of that there were a couple of things that dawned on us; one is that some organisations get involved in pride festivals for the wrong reasons, and most often for a short time and a good time, not for a long time. “Based on my experience in HR and based on these factors, we decided we would launch to our Winter Pride sponsors a requirement for them to commit to being rainbow inclusive all year around, beyond the Winter Pride Festival. It was a way for us to call those organisations to account about their commitment. The vast majority were like ‘absolutely we’re committed, this is important and we love Winter Pride but it is more than that – we want to be rainbow inclusive 365 days a year.’ We did some research, had a look around and spoke to other people that I knew in my HR world, and it dawned on us that there wasn’t a platform, a business or an organisation that people could be part of that could actually support them on their rainbow-inclusion journey other than the rainbow tick,” said King. The rainbow tick is a certification process that is less applicable to smaller or independentlyowned businesses such as bars, restaurants, cafes, or tourism operators. Since its inception in Queenstown, the Pride Pledge has had 270

organisations representing thousands of people throughout Aotearoa sign it. It’s now evolved to include Rainbow Awareness Training and a Rainbow Inclusion Stocktake, which is a selfevaluation tool to help organisations assess what they’re doing (and what they’re not) to support rainbow inclusion. “There was a real demand to build understanding, awareness and empathy within the rainbow inclusion space. So once we started workshops in Queenstown, more and more people showed interest and then organisations started to want them for their staff.” King eventually moved up to Auckland, and that’s when the pledge and training started to reach beyond Queenstown. Now the pledge has been taken by businesses all throughout the country. One of the Queenstown businesses to take the pledge is xtravel, who are the official travel partner of Winter Pride. They took the pledge as they understood that while New Zealand is a very inclusive and safe space, not everywhere in the world is – with different laws, customs and cultures, travel can be difficult to navigate for members of the rainbow community.

“We wanted to make sure that by taking the pledge we were letting people know that we would do everything in our power to ensure that people booking with us had holidays that were inclusive and that were meaningful for them,” said Tori Keating, co-owner of xtravel. Before taking the pledge, xtravel were aware of the difficulties that members of the rainbow community can face when travelling but have since learnt a lot more and now have a better understanding of how to navigate these issues. They want to ensure that everyone is able to travel safely, comfortably, and to be true to themselves. “We now have more of an acute understanding of some of the difficulties that some of our travellers will face when they travel overseas or domestically. In terms of different bias and different laws and legislations, we now approach every booking with a sense of tolerance, love and inclusivity.” Philippa Thomas is another Queenstowner to have taken the pledge. She’s a marriage celebrant who also worked alongside Winter Pride in 2020 to create the Pride Wedding Expo, an inclusive event where all vendors have taken the pledge. Thomas’ ultimate goal was to create a safe space for same-sex couples and work to continue to be an ally to the rainbow community. “I’m committed to making sure that anything the rainbow community do when they get married with me is safe and that they don’t need to worry about pre-empting anything with any kind of fear that they might get turned away. “Doing the training has given me the tools I need to make sure my business is visibly inclusive. Things like changing the form on my website for people to enquire with me – it doesn’t say bride or groom – in fact, I try not to use the words bride or groom throughout my website because not every wedding has a bride, not every wedding has a groom,” said Thomas. Arts+Culture Sweet Kiwi sounds by Jessica Allen

Kiwi singer-songwriter Hollie Smith will make her long-awaited performance in Queenstown this week after Covid-related delays. She recently released her first album in five years, Coming in From the Dark. She’s looking forward to getting back on the stage and will be enjoying Queenstown’s serenity. “I’ve only done about five gigs in the last year, so I’ve got a lot of steam to blow off. We’re still moulding the show but it’s going to be kind of high energy. I’d say even if the songs are slower, that energy’s still going to be high because we’re all finding it hard to sit still knowing we’re so close. We’re ready to bring it. “I love Queenstown, it’s one of my favourite cities. I just really enjoy taking in all of this serenity. It’s just so gorgeous,” said Smith. Coming in From the Dark features the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra on two tracks, and delivers a different sound to her previous release Water or Gold, which was more guitar orientated. When writing this album it was a process of melody first and lyrics second. “Back to keys on this one, so a little bit more mellow in parts. I normally just sit down and establish a chord progression and just sing over the top of it really, until it kind of starts making sense, and lyrically that takes a bit longer sometimes. Sometimes a song magically falls out of you, which is always a fun day when you just smash one out of the park, but generally I get caught on lyrics. […] If something keeps on coming up and I feel like I just need to write it out then I’ll do that and I’ll go back through and sort of try and mould it better.” Smith is also an avid supporter of the NZ music scene – she works with younger adults in helping them with direction in the music industry. 14-year-old Nikau Grace is one of the people she’s been working with. “Today I was just finishing off some background vocals to pass on to her, so I’m really looking forward to seeing what she gets up to in the near future.” Since Covid, NZ artists are struggling, and there’s a few ways that you can help out smaller acts within Aotearoa. “If you’re passionate about the local music industry, get out there to do as much as you can to support it because we all need to kind of bounce back somehow, and it’s not going to be without the support of others.

A lot of people are waiting to buy tickets until the very last minute, and that puts a lot of stress on a touring party, because if we think we’re not going to hit a certain target, then we’ll have to pull the show because we can’t risk it at this point. There’s a lot that goes into putting on a tour, so getting tickets early and letting us know that you’re going to be there makes a massive difference as well,” said Smith. You can see Hollie Smith perform at Yonder on Thursday 7th July. Information on her music and tour can be found at holliesmith.co.nz

What’s On The Golden Ass - A Tale of Epic Proportions

Tickets at Eventfinda:

Freely adapted from the notorious original by Apuleius, this brand new solo show is the story of Lucius - a young man driven by sexual desire and insatiable curiosity who is accidentally transformed into a donkey. Uh-oh!

When: Sunday 10 July 2022 7:30pm – 10:00pm Where: Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall, 33 Buckingham St, Arrowtown

What follows is a fantastical series of misadventures in a wicked world of witches, bandits, virgins, cultists, slaves, circuses, soldiers, pastry-cooks, prostitutes and priests. Marvellously, sidesplittingly ridiculous, The Golden Ass is the original donkey show, inspiring such literary giants as Shakespeare, Boccaccio, Cervantes, Rabelais and Keats. It remains today a powerful plea for empathy in a world gone mad. With music and direction from acclaimed composer John Gibson, and performance by renowned storyteller Michael Hurst, this modern take on one of the great classics will be a rollicking ride, well worth the fare.

Queenstown’s funny bunch by Jessica Allen

Remarkably Funny has been running open mic shows in Queenstown and Wanaka for more than three years. They organise a mix of small local gigs and larger shows with headline acts from outside of the area; this week they have Ben Hurley coming down to hit the stage alongside some of the best local talent going. All profits from their shows go back into putting on more shows and helping local comics sharpen their skills through workshops as well as helping them to gain more experience in Aotearoa’s comedy scene through travel. Megan Cartwright runs Remarkably Funny and organises shows for the comics, many of which started performing stand-up for the first time with her organisation. “We started running monthly open mic nights in January of 2019. Over the last three years we’ve brought together a community of comedians from all walks of life. Due to Covid, our shows have been a bit up and down, but we plan to have our regular open mics in both towns running monthly from now on, so watch this space!” Over the past two years Remarkably Funny has helped two local comics to make it to the RAW Comedy Quest finals in Auckland, Maggie Rogers and Sean Tinker – they’ve also been nominated for several NZ Comedy Guild Awards. Queenstown’s diversity is keeping the comedy scene fresh and unique.

now there’s these relatively strong local scenes everywhere and it’s really cool. What Remarkably Funny is doing, because Queenstown is such an international place, is a real breadth of nationality. I think that’s really cool.” Ben Hurley’s comedy style is autobiographical – telling stories from his life. “I’m a story teller. It’s evolved with me as I’ve got older and gone through different stages of my life. […] I did Wanaka and Queenstown with Remarkably Funny during the Auckland lockdown. I’m down there a relative amount for various things, and I love it. I mean, how could you not like it; it’s beautiful and I imagine there’s quite a vibe at the moment because people are coming in for the first time in twoand-a-half years.” Ben Hurley will be performing at Canyon Brewing on Thursday 7th July. You can find out more about other shows that Remarkably Funny is putting on or learn how to get involved with comedy by looking them up on Facebook and Instagram.

“Queenstown and Wanaka attract people from all over the world, of all ages and backgrounds. This means no two acts are the same and every performer has their own uniqueness on stage, which is pretty special,” said Cartwright. The latest comic to hit Queenstown’s stage will be Ben Hurley, who cut his teeth in Wellington before heading abroad to London to spread his comedy wings. He moved back to Auckland before making appearances on 7 Days, The Project and Seven Sharp. He’s worked with Remarkably Funny in the past, too, particularly during the Auckland lockdowns, and is excited about Aotearoa’s comedy scene growing. “I think it’s great that these scenes are popping up around the country. There’s quite a few cities that have local comedy scenes now and that didn’t used to be the case. Auckland was where most of the comedians were, there was a few in Wellington and a couple in Christchurch, but

Bacteria species found in glacial ice could pose disease risk as glaciers melt from global warming

A team of researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences has found nearly 1,000 species of bacteria in snow and ice samples collected from Tibetan glaciers. They collected snow and ice samples from 21 glaciers in Tibet over the years 2010 to 2016. Each was melted and then tested to see what was in the water left behind. In so doing, the researchers found 968 unique species of bacteria, 98% of which had never been seen before.

HOUSE ELECTRICAL

The problem with such bacteria and viruses is that they could be infectious to animals and humans. As the snow and ice melts, they could travel with the water into rivers and streams into populated areas. And perhaps an even bigger problem could be that modern plants and animals, including humans, lack immunity to the older microbes, which suggests they could be deadly and difficult to treat. Thus, they present the possibility of starting local epidemics and possibly pandemics.

Italian hairdressers face fines for shampooing amid heatwave The mayor of an Italian town has banned hairdressers and barbers from shampooing their customers’ hair twice in an attempt to conserve water during one of the most severe droughts in decades. Carlo Gubellini, the mayor of Castenaso, near Bologna in the Emilia-Romagna region, said thousands of litres of water was squandered each day through double-shampooing, which many hairdressers believe is beneficial, and hence doublerinsing. He is believed to be the only mayor in Italy to take such a measure, which will involve checks and fines of up to €500 for salons breaking the rule, as Italy fights drought during an intense, protracted heatwave.

Helpful Advice Quick Service Quality Result We also stock an affordable range of giftware, framed prints & baby gear

“If we multiply the amount of water used for each customer, we are talking about thousands of litres a day,” Gubellini told Corriere della Sera. “Castenaso is small: imagine what it means in terms of water consumption in large cities. We issued the order on Saturday, considering hairdressers are closed on Sundays and Mondays, to give them plenty of time to adapt.”

Apple is one of the world’s most profitable businesses, generating over $151 billion a day, which equates to $1,752 every single second. To put that into context, the average weekly wage in the US currently stands at $1,237, meaning that the average American doesn’t even earn the same amount that Apple earns in a second after a full week at work. Fellow tech giants Microsoft and Alphabet (the parent company of Google) also draw in more than a thousand dollars each second, which works out at around $100 million a day. Tipalti.com

Health and Wellness Top tips to reduce stress and improve your life Many of the health problems we see today are driven by the lifestyles in which we choose to live. Often it is not cuts, bacteria or a tumor that is the source of pain, but rather the way we choose to live. Conditions are often exacerbated by the fact that we are super busy. For example, you wake up feeling lethargic after a poor night’s sleep, rush to get the kids to school, juggle a very busy workload and home life. From the moment you open your eyes it’s all go, go, go. Then when the kids are finally in bed you start working through emails or trolling social media absent mindedly. Often with the saying ‘I don’t have time to rest/relax’, ‘I don’t have time to exercise’, I don’t have time to cook’. Cortisol surge. Cortisol has been identified as one of the principal stress response hormones. It is natural for it to rise and fall at different times throughout the day. Our cortisol levels surge when we are stressed. In short bursts, it can help us tackle a sudden problem head on. However, when we endure it for a sustained period, it becomes a problem. Cortisol works by activating the sympathetic nervous system (our fight or flight response). What we see a lot today is that people are constantly in fight or flight mode. Spending their days with cortisol levels continuously ramped up, their nervous system is in a constant state of panic. It helps divert energy away from processes in the body like digestion, that are not necessary for survival. It releases energy from muscles and lowers immune system function. This response can be managed, as long as we take steps to balance it out with rest and relaxation. This involves the other part of our nervous system, the parasympathetic nervous system. It works at a much slower rate. When activated our saliva production increases, digestive enzymes are released, heart rate drops and our muscles relax. It allows us to digest food appropriately, destress and sleep soundly. To help us manage the stress of modern-day life we should be encouraging the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and relax).

Ideas to try: 1.

Start a journal. Every night before bed, write down what you are grateful for, what went well (or not so well) that day, dump thoughts, feelings in your head onto paper.

2. Practice stillness daily. Listen to music with your eyes closed. Rest and feel your senses. 3. Meditation. Could try an app like Calm. 4. 3-4-5 Breathing. A simple exercise (best lying down or in a relaxed sitting position). Inhale for 3 seconds, hold it for 4 seconds, slowly exhale for 5 seconds. Repeat. 5. Re-claim your dining table. Eat one meal a day at the table, in company (if possible), without your devices. A digital detox. • • • •

Switch off push notifications from your phone, tablet or laptop. Switch off all electronic devices 90 minutes before bed. Try and have 1-2 hours a day when you are device free. Sunday – live your entire day offline without any screens.
