Thrilled to just be here

Every Monday afternoon at 3.30pm for the last three months I have wandered the streets of downtown Queenstown for 45 minutes, killing time waiting for my daughter to finish her dance class. I go down Church Street around the waterfront through Steamer Wharf up Shotover Street down Beach Street, along Rees, back up The Mall along Camp Street down Cow Lane. You get the idea. Drifting. I meet friends in the street and stop for a chat, I see fellow business owners standing outside their restaurants, bars or shops. I watch for Australian visitors. Like hunting deer in the bush. A sign, any sign of their presence. I shake my head at the painfully inept work ethic of CBD upgrade contractors. I think of that Dire Straits song “…look at those yo yos, that’s the way you do it, money for nothing…” Not much changed for two- and three-quarter months. A bit depressing to be honest. Then, last Monday all of a sudden, the buzz was back. I don’t know if it was before or after the first direct flight back into ZQN from Aussie, but there were smiles on people’s faces. A sign our target species were back. Couples browsing restaurant menus wearing nice ski fashion choices straight out of the malls of Sydney.

The next morning was one of those super cold ones, negative something my nose told me. I was brushing frost off an outside table at my restaurant and a lady came out with a smile a mile wide. She must have had a good guest experience, so I smiled widely back. We started chatting. I remarked on the temperature and her response was pure joy. It went something like “I absolutely love it here, never experienced anything like this before, wow just look around, this is amazing.” Noticing her summery attire, I said she should pop down the road to the local puffer jacket shop. “No no no I must have been born for the cold, I’m from Cairns it’s bloody hot there, this just feels amazing”. At this point all my worries just dissolved away into the frost. What I was seeing on the streets and in conversation with this very happy lady from Cairns was the new beginning of tourism in New Zealand. Or at least my hope for it. People visiting who really really want to be here. Grateful, respectful, happy guests who came to New Zealand and love it, because we are New Zealand. It seems pretty simple now, just be us, don’t sweat the small stuff and believe that every one of the 200 or 300 people getting off those planes direct out of Australia will be thrilled to just be here. Arrowtown shines for Matariki Thousands of people descended on Arrowtown / Kā Muriwai over the weekend to celebrate Matariki with waiata, kapa haka, illuminations, projections, fire dancing, food and music. Arrowtown Museum Director David Clarke, who was recently awarded the Queens Service Medal for services to heritage preservation, opened the festivities on Friday afternoon from a packed Buckingham Green. “As a recorder of history, I think you will all remember where you were on the first Matariki celebration in New Zealand was spent,” he said. A mihi, karakia and waiata tautoko by Cory Ratahi and Ngā Manu Hou o Whakatipu began the formalities. QLDC’s rangatahi in this year’s Tuia programme - Olivia Jones, along with Queenstown Lakes District Mayor Jim Boult completed the official opening. Boult said that after two years isolated from loved ones, Matariki had come at a great time. “Matariki is a time for renewal, reflection and celebration of our connection with each other, our whanau and our amazing environment. “It’s a time for hope… It’s also a time for us to reflect and acknowledge the contribution of our ancestors who paved the way for our way of life in this wonderful part of the world.” Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association Manager Nicky Busst said she was thrilled to see so many people embrace the event. “It’s really brought the community together and I’ve met so many people from all parts of New Zealand who’ve heard about it and want to know more about Matariki or have come down because they have some sort of connection here.” The Arrowtown Preschoolers’ performance delighted the crowd, before Arrowtown Primary School’s renowned kapa haka group of 70 braved the cold to perform eight sets. They included a new waiata that has never been performed in public by the group before. “I found it quite emotional – it was really quite beautiful,” Nicky said. Once it became dark, Arrowtown’s historic buildings were lit up as never before. Illuminations and projections by the South Island Light Orchestra (SILO), explored the meaning of Matariki and the beginning of the Māori New Year, with Arrowtown Primary School once again adding to the artistic creations. The wonders of the Matariki stars, astrophotography, and Otago’s dark night skies were shared by one of the world’s pre-eminent astrophysicists, Professor Brian Boyle to a captivated audience. A Māori film festival at Dorothy Browns completed the evening with a showing of new release, Whina, about trailblazing Māori leader Dame Whina Cooper. Other films today and tomorrow, include Whale Rider and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. The celebrations continued over the weekend, with creative displays, including astrophotography and illuminations, and a market with local arts, crafts and produce.

Air New Zealand’s international flights return by Paul Taylor

Queenstown Airport has welcomed the arrival of the first international Air New Zealand flights in almost a year.

Honolulu, Houston and Tahiti restarting after around 820 days of not operating.

Flights NZ264 from Melbourne, and NZ260 from Brisbane touched down on Friday afternoon, on the same day as Aotearoa New Zealand celebrated Matariki.

The Boeing 777-300 aircraft will also be back flying passengers, helping towards the addition of around 40,000 seats per week in July on the international network.

Matariki, Te iti o Tāhuna, Wakatipu High School’s Kapa Haka group, gave a performance at the airport to mark the special day and welcome friends and whānau arriving from Australia.

Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Greg Foran says it takes a huge effort to get the airline back up and running.

Air NZ is the third airline to restart flying internationally to and from Queenstown Airport since borders reopened. It will connect Queenstown to Brisbane 4-3 per week (inbound / outbound), Melbourne 7-6 per week and Sydney 9-5 per week.

“To bring one Boeing 777-300 out of storage in Auckland takes around six to eight weeks to get it ready for the skies. “We’ve hired or rehired more than 2,000 Air New Zealanders across the business including 150 pilots, more than 500 cabin crew, and 270 airport employees, with another 1100 vacancies to be filled.

Matariki, Te iti o Tāhuna performing at Queenstown Airport

GM Corporate & Community Affairs Sara Irvine says: “The winter ahead is looking positive in terms of arrivals into Queenstown Airport, although we aren’t expecting to reach pre-Covid levels this year. “During the peak winter period, airlines have scheduled similar capacity on domestic routes to what they had in 2019 and about 75% on international routes.” Air NZ is relaunching 14 international routes into NZ airports in 16 days. That means the airline will be operating 60 percent of its international capacity. From 9 July, the airline will have three quarters of its international and domestic routes back up and running with popular destinations like

“It’s no easy feat but we’re getting back to where we were so we can give our customers that Air New Zealand service they know and love.” Foran says Air NZ sees first-hand how keen people are to travel again, particularly across the Tasman. “Come July, we will double our services across the Tasman and restart popular direct services like the Sunshine Coast, Hobart and Adelaide. By 9 July we will be back to all nine Australian ports which is an important milestone for us.”

NZI RURAL WOMEN NZ BUSINESS AWARDS

They may not be trumpeting their achievements under the bright lights of the city, but rural women in New Zealand are a formidable force in business and it’s their time to shine. Entries opened recently for the 2022 NZI Rural Women New Zealand Business Awards, which showcase rural women entrepreneurs and the contribution and support their enterprises provide to the county’s rural communities and small towns. Rural Women NZ national president Gill Naylor says rural women are a resourceful and creative bunch and some amazing innovations have emerged during the past two years when many businesses have had to reboot and rebirth. “Last year’s awards had the highest number of entrants since their inception 10 years ago with an especially impressive line-up and diversity of entrants from all corners of the country,” says Gill. Past winners have included Mackenzie Basin farmer Kate Ivey from Kate Ivey Fitness, who created an outdoor online fitness class, filming sessions live from the snowy paddocks of her farm. Kate has gained a huge following around New Zealand, and even in Australia, since the 2020 lockdown. Ranfurly-based Janyne Fletcher’s digital landscape photography business has also been a category winner. This region has produced

2021 Rural Champion Award winner Harriet Bremner with her award and miniature Daschund, Poppy

a couple of other top award winners as well – Bobbie Mulgrew in 2014, then from Glenorchy, for her Easyhike business, and Deborah Cruickshank from Tannacrieff Wines. Others have included Rose Voice, of Maniototo, and her Real Dog Equipment business, and Tammy Taylor’s Fork and Spade environmental planting plans for Southland farms. Categories range from ‘Love of the Land’, ‘Creative Arts’ and ‘Rural Health and Wellbeing Excellence’ to ‘Emerging Business’, ‘Bountiful Table’ and ‘Rural Champion’. Last year’s ‘Rural Champion’ winner was Manapouri children’s book author, speaker and rural health and safety advocate Harriet Bremner, whose award-winning messages aim to gently address real problems in rural New Zealand.

Rural women bring new life into our rural economies and ensure they remain resilient, prosperous and ready for whatever the future brings, says NZI’s executive manager agencies and schemes Christina Chellew, who’s expecting a tough job ahead for the judges. “We really want to encourage women to enter,” says Gill. “They will find that even just going through the business plan entry process will be extremely useful in deciding where they want their business to head.” Entries close on Friday, July 29, at 5pm. To enter visit: https://ruralwomennz.nz/nzi-ruralwomen-nz-business-awards-2022/

“It’s now just over two years since many budding rural entrepreneurs decided to start their own businesses during the Covid-19 lockdowns and we’re really excited to see what these women have come up with,” says Gill. “These awards aren’t just for farmers, but anyone operating a business in rural or small town New Zealand.” The entries close in late July and the winners will be announced at a gala dinner in Wellington in November. Last year’s awards gala dinner had to be broken into a series of smaller regional dinners.

ALEC MIKAERE

HONOURING HIS HERITAGE The school system may have failed him as a youngster, but these days Alec Mikaere is sought after by others for his wisdom. Alec, who jokes his Te Reo ‘showcase’ name is longer than the longest place name in New Zealand, was born in 1950. He comes from a highly respected Rotorua whanau who descended from the survivors of the Mount Tarawera eruption. “Our people guided the early settlers over the Pink and White Terraces, forming one of New Zealand’s first tourism operations,” says Alec. Tourism’s in the blood for this colourful character who’s eagerly shared Maori history, both locally and all over New Zealand, as a tour guide and coach driver for many years. In fact, Alec’s foray into tourism began at the tender age of five when he joined the penny divers in his local village. “We waited in the river below while the tourists passed over the bridge handing their coins to the tour guide who threw them into the river,” says Alec. “We’d dive down and pick them up then swim to the surface displaying them in our mouths. You learned how to dive and you could catch it mid-air if you were good enough.” They could earn as much as 15 shillings ($3) a day. “We’d buy a loaf of bread and tin of corned beef at the shop, dip the can into the hot geysers to heat, rip the centre of the bread out and fill it with the hot beef.” It was a great source of income right through until high school. One of eight kids Alec grew up around the famous Te Whakarewrewatanga O Te Ope Taua Wahiao thermal village. “We lived among the geothermal geysers, bathing and washing in them, cooking our food in steam boxes over them. There was even a pool to prepare our ceremonial costumes – the piu piu, and one to pluck and prepare birds.” Alec was mainly brought up by his grandmother after his mother had to take in her sister’s six kids when she passed away. Both his mother and grandmother were professional guides. “I went to the local Maori school. My first language was Maori so I struggled learning the English curriculum,” says Alec. “I’d grown up with my grandparents learning the Maori way so I couldn’t relate to the education system.” He learned survival skills, harvesting what Mother Earth had provided, from a young age. “If my father was going hunting I’d rather go with him than to school. I was the ‘golden child’. If my mother wouldn’t give me something, I’d go to my grandmother and if she wouldn’t my auntie would,” laughs Alec. From the age of about 13, Alec was also working in Guide Rangi’s Concert Group, a cultural entertainment group performing for international and Kiwi tourists, also his first job out of high school. “Then I was introduced to

carving at our local Ohinemutu Marae where I learned from a master carver.” By 18 Alec was in partnership in a carving business, but it grew too big and busy. Competition eventually saw him revert to hobby carving – still his passion today using local driftwood. “There was no satisfaction mass producing carvings back then. I love to bring something that has been dead back to life again, rebirthing a beautiful piece of wood.”

Alec built a home in Maketu with his first wife, where they lived off the land, gifted to Alec by his mother, with their three kids. “Anybody who couldn’t survive down there was lazy. There was an abundance of Alec, with a beautiful driftwood carving, incorporating recycled artwork, that he created for daughter Kahoki’s 21st. The carving signifies her whanau genealogy. seafood. I’d also hunt and catch extra to give have graced Dart Wilderness Jet and Dart to the elderly and others in our community.” Even today at 71 Alec is renowned for his River Jet courtesy coaches, as well as NZ Ski’s plentiful veggie garden. “I learned the ways of coaches. Alec’s even starred in 10,000BC and our old people, but this is a very different climate Bride Flights, filmed locally. down here. Many Maori medicines can’t be grown here unless you have a hothouse. I’m now getting on this canoe with Matariki and following the seasons using the stars as our ancestors did.”

His passion for Maori heritage landed him and his second wife, Cel Mikaere, in Tahuna (Queenstown) in 2000 where they eventually had four kids. Alec had been sought out by Norm Ruru, of the former Queenstown Maori Restaurant and Cultural Group, to be his operations manager and expand the restaurant. He’d been driving and guiding tours for Tamaki Tours in the North Island and running a Maori cultural group at Rotorua’s Quality Hotel. From Queenstown Alec began working for a Dutch tour company doing 56-day tours all over New Zealand. “I’d stop with the tourists at the likes of Marehau Beach, near Golden Bay, to collect cockles which we’d cook up, and I’d cook for them in steam pots in our whanau geothermal pools. They were blown away.” After three years developing The Hunting Village at Kiwi Birdlife Park, Alec was awarded the Queenstown Lakes District Council’s Heart of Gold Award. His entertaining and colourful commentaries

“I’ve learned the whakapapa of the people of this area and studied the genealogy of the land. This was their supermarket, rich in bounty. Their kumara wouldn’t grow here though so the early Maori went through to the Greenstone Valley, bartering fish and birds along the way, then up the Coast to Christchurch,” says Alec. “Then the early Europeans came in and cut down their supermarket for farming.”

“I just love Maori history and I love to share it. I’m all about the people and sharing the love,” says Alec. “Faith, hope and love and the greatest of these is love.” Together with Cel, Alec still helps with community ministries through his local church, City Impact, and loves supporting the local Maori community.

Alec’s Whakatauki (Whanau Proverb): Manaaki Wai – Care for the water Manaaki Whenua – Care for the land Manaaki Tangata – Care for the people

Resilient hospo sector up for awards by Paul Taylor

Queenstown’s Future Hospitality Group is leading the charge for the town’s resurgent hospo industry in awards season.

“It’s an understatement to say the business environment in Queenstown in particular has been a challenge,” he says.

The bar company, run by James Ace and former Stampede captain Bert Haines, is shortlisted for four gongs at the Hospitality Awards for Excellence 2022.

“But we knuckled down, investing hugely in taking the time to improve our business practices and developing our company values, and in employee learning, growth and engagement.”

And seven other Queenstown hospo and hotel venues and businesses have also been shortlisted, including hugely-popular restaurant White & Wong’s, which last year won best restaurant at awards, run by Hospitality New Zealand. Future Hospitality Group’s Little Blackwood is in the running in the best bar / pub category, while Margo’s and Queenstown Ice Bar are both in the best new / redeveloped F&B business category. The company is also a finalist in the excellence in people & culture category.

Future Hospitality Group co-owners James Ace and Bert Haines

Haines says they’re “absolutely thrilled” to see their hard work and that of their staff being recognised after a difficult two-and-a-half years of lockdowns and closed borders.

A record number of entries were received for this year’s awards, with 177 venues from around the country submitting 209 nominations.

Other Queenstown businesses to make shortlist include 11th Avenue by Frank’s, which is up for the best café award, and The Frankton Arm Tavern, which could win best local. QT Queenstown is a finalist in the best luxury hotel category, while Holiday Inn Queenstown Remarkables Park and The Central Private are both vying for Best New/ Redeveloped Business – Accommodation. Cargo Gantley’s Pub & Café is also shortlisted in the best new / redeveloped F&B business category, while Queenstown’s 11-venue goliath Republic Hospitality Group will take on Future Hospitality Group in the excellence in people & culture final. Hospitality NZ Chief Executive Julie White says the awards, sponsored by Lion, are the pinnacle of the industry. “It’s a pity we have to single out anyone because every hospitality and accommodation business owner, operator and worker out there deserves a medal for the resilience and perseverance they’ve shown through probably the toughest period the industry has ever been through,” White says. “It’s inspiring to see hospitality businesses still looking to be the best and to meet customers’ needs after what they’ve been through.” Winners will be announced at a black-tie dinner at the Grand Millennium Hotel, Auckland, on 27 July – the final night of the two-day 2022 New Zealand Hospitality Conference.

In the era of social media, standing for public office can be a daunting task so I write this both for those considering standing and for those quick to publically criticise the few that do. The Local Government Act requires Local Authorities to play a broad role in promoting the social, economic, environmental, and cultural wellbeing of their communities, taking a sustainable development approach. By that token then it shouldn’t be too difficult to find suitably qualified candidates to put themselves forward to play a key role in the decision making of our nationally significant district. Anyone with governance experience at a social sector, business sector, environmental protection or cultural awareness level should feel empowered to put themselves forward. With only one person indicating that they will stand for council at the October election so far, it causes me to wonder how much influence negative online comments and some media play a role in deterring good people from putting themselves forward. Our basic humanity tells us that those willing to sacrifice their time and earning ability for the greater good should be applauded however anyone seeking celebrity status would not be wise to take public office. Neither glamour nor praise is likely to be forthcoming when making decisions on everything from wastewater to cemeteries. For those with a genuine passion for our communities though, (and a thick skin), time around the council table can be an extremely rewarding experience. As a councillor you will be exposed to the inner workings of democracy and have the opportunity to steer our communities towards a sustainable future. You will become familiarised with both our many people and environment orientated community groups as well as central government officers, business leaders, infrastructure experts and a vast array of council staff and contractors. You will be required to give up many weekends and evenings to meet with community associations, cultural and newcomer groups and be involved in ceremonies and public meetings. Whilst reward always involves sacrifice it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional life to meet with these people and attend these important events. It’s no secret that councillors are not well paid (although there has been a recent review). Similarly, the wide ranging and technical nature of the matters deliberated at council require a huge commitment of time and concentration. But, should you have held a community leadership role either in a community association, sports group, business or sector advocacy group, church or cultural group you will have many of the skills, and most certainly the passion, required to make a meaningful and lasting contribution to this wonderful district.

Go to lwb.co.nz and create a free printed ad in our classifieds.

I ask those quick to make a public judgement to reflect on the above. If you really are dissatisfied and feel you could do a better job put your name forward. Nominations are open from 15 July – 15 August. My door is open to those wanting to discuss the challenges and rewards of being a QLDC councillor.

Arts+Culture Same market, new tricks by Jessica Allen

Creative Queenstown Arts & Crafts Market in Earnslaw Park is having a refresh after more than 35 years in operation – there’s a new market manager on board, Brigit Van der Kaag, and it will now be going by simply, Queenstown Market. Over the years the market has moved a few times. Starting its life on the Village Green before moving to Earnslaw Park it now spans the waterfront from the park to the end of the mall. Brigit took over after herself working a stall for several years. “I got shoulder tapped. I’ve been a stallholder myself at the Remarkables Market, and then I stopped when Covid came along. So then this came up and I went, ‘oh, well, I’ll give it a go two days a week – it sounds good, I’ll know what it’s like to be a stallholder, and I love a new project.’ My first one was the markets just before Christmas,” Brigit explained. Bridgit creates bags from recycled denim under the moniker Mrs Sew & Sew, but she’s put her stall on hold while she focuses on growing the market. “My idea when I took on the Queenstown Market was that I wanted to just help it grow and help it develop, and if I was a stallholder, I just saw that as a bit of a conflict.” The market runs every Saturday and is a hub for budding and established arts and crafts enthusiasts. It has been a great launching platform for local artists, and many people make their living from the stalls. Wares available include everything from soaps and skincare to jewellery, wood products, artwork, and clothing, all of which are handmade by the person selling it. “It was started as a way of people making a living in Queenstown as an alternative to other things, and giving people an opportunity to sell to the public without having to be a retail store themselves. We’ve got people who have been coming for 30 plus years, with a huge range of ages and a big diversity of wonderful products,” said Brigit. Queenstown Market is a non-profit and everything that is made from stallholder fees goes back into the community. Brigit has big plans to work with Te Atamira and hold workshops to help some of the artisans who want to make their life work around their skills, rather than having to work to do their art. The latest member of the market to branch out is Jasmine Clark, who was the previous manager of the markets. “She’s a very successful artist in her own right and she started at the market, and now she’s just doing it. She’s somebody that I see as a way of showing what you can do if you start in a market, get used to what you’re selling and what you’re doing, developing and finding out what you actually like, and what people want.” Brigit really cares about her marketeers, as she calls them, and wants to see them all achieve their goals.

What’s On Flax Weaving Waikawa basket with Jasmine Clark Spend a day learning to weave NZ flax/harakeke and create your own beautiful Waikawa storage basket. This technique uses whole flax leaves to create a large strong practical basket. Materials provided. Limited to 6 participants. Tickets at Eventfinda: $140.00 per person. When: Saturday 9 July 2022 10:00am – 4:00pm Where: Te Atamira, Dart House, Remarkables Park Town Centre

“I think our market is a wonderful vehicle for people to show their talents and I am hoping to help New Zealand artists’ to increase their profile through attending our markets and thereby creating a pathway to becoming full-time artists, while also supporting those who make a living through the markets.” You can visit Queenstown Market every Saturday along the waterfront from Earnslaw Park. More information on how to be a stallholder and what’s on offer can be found at queenstownmarket.com

Mayor stays neutral over successor by Paul Taylor

Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult says he won’t endorse any one candidate to replace him. Boult, who’s served two terms as Queenstown Lakes District, announced in April that he will stand down at the next local government elections in October. So far, three people have launched their campaigns, Jon Mitchell, Olivia Wensley and Glyn Lewers. But Boult says it would be improper for him to back one candidate over another. “I’m constantly asked who will be my successor and whether I am supportive of any particular candidate – whether they are one of the three candidates currently standing or anyone yet to announce their intention to contest the mayoral office. “I’ve made it very clear that my position on this should always be a neutral one and I restate that now. “It is up to the community to decide who will lead the district for the next three years and it would be completely improper of me to influence that in any way.” All three candidates are well known in Queenstown Lakes and have believe they have the credentials and experience to take the top job. Former Labour Party general election candidate Jon Mitchell was the first to stand, followed by Startup Queenstown Lakes CEO and former lawyer Olivia Wensley, and then serving Queenstown Lakes councillor Glyn Lewers. Whoever wins faces “significant issues to address” across the district in the wake of Covid-19, Boult says. “This will require strong leadership on a number of fronts including the many upcoming reforms led by Central Government and a sound understanding of the social and economic drivers of our district.” The mayor also says he’s disappointed at the lack of candidates in the running to be councillors.

From the current crop, Dr Val Miller and Penny Clark have announced they will stand down at the next election, while Glyn Lewers will only run for the mayoralty. Craig ‘Ferg’ Ferguson has announced he intends to stand again, along with Quentin Smith and Niki Gladding. Esther Whitehead is undecided. Only one new candidate, human resources Jim Boult consultant Lisa Guy, has put her name forward, standing for the new Arrowtown-Kawarau Ward. Candidate nominations don’t open officially until 15 July, however, and don’t close until midday on 12 August. “A strong council is vital for the district’s recovery and again I strongly encourage community-minded people to consider their availability,” Boult says. “Yes, it’s a challenging and demanding role but one that’s incredibly rewarding if you genuinely want to make a difference in the future of the Queestown Lakes.” QLDC has launched its ‘Local Legends’ campaign to encourage people to put their name forward. They need to be over 18 years of age, enrolled to vote, and be a New Zealand citizen. This year’s election will be held on Saturday, 8 October, with voting closing at noon.

Jump in for ORC by Paul Taylor

And Otago Regional Council is also on the lookout for fresh blood. ORC is the place to be if you want to improve the quality of the environment, as it manages the regions rivers and lakes, protects threatened species, and also provides public transport, says interim chief executive Dr Pim Borren. Dunstan constituency, which covers Queenstown Lakes, has three councillors, Alexa Forbes, Michael Laws and Gary Kelliher. Well-known local Forbes announced her intention to stand again last week, with a video of her jumping into a freezing Lake Whakatipu. You can watch that on the Lakes Weekly Bulletin Facebook page. Borren says it’s a challenging time for local government. “We are dealing with a number of threats to our natural and urban environments, such as climate change, as well as significant central government reform,” he says. “Effective representation is a vital part of New Zealand’s democracy and

while not always the easiest job in the world, being an elected member of local government can be a rewarding one.” He encourages anyone thinking of standing for council this year to have a look at the council’s Pre-Election report (available online from 1 July) or to attend one of the candidate briefing sessions. Dates will be advertised on ORC website and social media. “You don’t need any special qualifications to be a candidate. Elected members come from all backgrounds and walks of life and diversity in the mix is ideal,” Borren says. “To be effective you will need to bring a broad range of skills to the role including decision-making and strategic thinking, communication skills and the desire to engage with your community as part of your role, plus relationship-building and collaboration skills” Nominations also open 15 July, close 12 August, and election day is 8 October.

COMMUNITY NOTES Connecting Our Community by Sue Fea

The migrant community has traditionally made up a large proportion of the Queenstown Lakes District workforce, at its peak believed to be as much as 40.7 percent of the population, according to 2018 Census statistics. The events of the past two years forced many of these people who had no income or support to head back to their home countries once they could. However, many stayed on as this is home. Now The Kiwi Kit Community Trust is working hard to support the local ethnic and migrant community and ensure they’re fulfilled in their roles, feel valued and can integrate into local life. The Kiwi Kit Community Trust was set up in the wake of the first 2020 lockdown, by Argentinian Franco Nobell, who himself lost his job locally and became a fulltime volunteer for Red Cross, American Kelsey Powell and Mexican Daniela Mercado, and their friends. Since then they’ve staged community events and offered support to dozens of local migrants, including holding The Great Migrant Brainstorms in Queenstown and Wanaka early last year. Visa and mental health issues were the focus of discussions and Kelsey says it was a chance for migrant in the community to air their concerns. “We’re trying to support our migrant community and ensure they’re seen, heard and valued, and that we can connect them with the resources they need in times of need,” she says. Last year they advocated for the Residence Visa, helped set up community English classes and teamed up with Taramea Community Garden, which Franco says produced a wonderful sense of belonging. Recently the trust held the Volunteer Expo at Te Atamira Art Gallery in Frankton, connecting migrants with some 20 different local charitable organisations and encouraging them to volunteer. This was in collaboration with Volunteer South Central Lakes. Each organisation had a stand where migrants could learn more about their work and sign up. “Volunteering is a great way to add value to the community and for migrants to offer their skills and knowledge in community service,” says Franco. “Many of our migrant workers are not able to work in their trained professions in New Zealand, or switch jobs easily, because they can’t get residency,” he says. One of the main issues identified locally among migrants was the inability to work after the events of the past two years and the loss of that feeling that they’re adding value to the community, he says.

“We attracted about 100 people, including organisations, to that event and the feedback was amazing. It was a super welcoming space in which migrant people could network and meet others,” says Franco. “I believe our migrant community here has a lot of resilience after going through some very difficult situations.” The trust’s aim is to connect these people, who bring a vibrant energy and colour from all over the world, with the whole community. We need to hold the space for our ethnic and migrant community.” A Paihikara: Follow The Light event held on Friday (June 24) to celebrate Matariki was part of the trust’s new project, One Bike, in collaboration with Lightfoot Initiatve. Next on the agenda is the second ‘What’s Your Story’ event, teaming up with Bright Ink Secondhand Bookshop.

Tit bits FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Polar bear population discovered that can survive with little sea ice The group has adapted to hunting on glacial ice, which suggests some members of the species might survive as the Arctic heats up. An isolated population of polar bears has been discovered in southeast Greenland, which is free of sea ice for most of the year. Polar bears typically need sea ice to survive, so the discovery is raising hopes that some members of the species might survive the loss of ice caused by climate change. Researchers identified the genetically distinct sub-population living in the fjords of southeast Greenland, which is surrounded by mountains and an ice sheet to the west, and ocean to the east. Because this region is so far south, sea-ice coverage lasts for only around 100 days each year. Polar bears need access to Arctic sea ice to hunt for seals. So, with sea ice in the region diminishing because of global heating, the animals are expected to near extinction by the end of this century. But the isolated sub-population has found a way to hunt without sea ice. The group, consisting of several hundred individuals, has adapted to hunting on the ice that has calved off glaciers — called glacial mélange. The research team used genetic analysis to learn that this population has been isolated from other polar bear populations along Greenland’s east coast for at least 200 years.

Plant giveaway promotes Thailand’s medical marijuana sector Thailand’s health minister kicked off a marijuana giveaway recently, handing out the first 100 seedlings of a planned distribution of 1 million plants a day after the country legalized cultivation and possession of the drug. Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who has been the driving force behind legalization, presided over the giveaway at a fair and exhibition held in the northeastern province of Buriram, a stronghold of his Bhumjai Thai party. Anutin has touted growing marijuana, also called cannabis, as a way to increase farmers’ incomes.

THE AIR WE BREATHE IS FULL OF TOXINS

His party draws heavily on the support of low-income farmers in the largely agricultural northeast. He was cheered by a crowd of thousands as he gave a speech taking credit for legalizing marijuana, which he said would bring financial benefits to “individual growers, community farmers (and) entrepreneurs.”

His party said more than 350,000 households have already registered as cannabis growers.

USB-C will be mandatory for phones sold in the EU European Union will mandate all new phones and other digital devices utilising USB-C plugs in an effort to standardize and reduce electronic waste; rules threaten Apple’s use of proprietary Lightning ports. European Union lawmakers have reached an agreement on legislation that will force all future smartphones sold in the EU — including Apple’s iPhone — to be equipped with the universal USB-C port for wired charging by fall 2024. The rule will also apply to other electronic devices including tablets, digital cameras, headphones, handheld video game consoles, and e-readers. Laptops will have to comply with the rule at a later date. The legislation has been under development for more than a decade, but an agreement on its scope was reached last week following negotiations between different EU bodies. “Today we have made the common charger a reality in Europe!” said the European Parliament’s rapporteur Alex Agius Saliba in a press statement. “European consumers were frustrated long with multiple chargers piling up with every new device. The legislation still needs to be approved by the EU Parliament and Council later this year, but this appears to be a formality The Verge

Wellington by David Gibbs

Nothing beats Wellington on a nice day. It’s a region brimming with activity and the locals and visitors make the most of it when the sun is out. Years ago the whole city got behind the branding Absolutely Positively Wellington which is one of those campaigns that resonated and has stuck. Wellington does resonate positivity. We struck it lucky recently with a quick weekend in Wellington to catch up with family and friends. We also got terrific weather to get out and enjoy some of the great free activities. Day Hike - Hugging the coast I’d heard a lot about the Escarpment track that hugs the hillside between Paekakariki and Pukerua Bay and it didn’t disappoint. It’s a spectacular walk from Pukerua Bay to Paekakariki and follows the commuter railway line at the beginning before heading up the side of the hill. The track crosses two swing bridges with lots of narrow clifftop trails and plenty of steps along the way. The trail has a lot of up and down and isn’t a good idea if you have a real fear of heights. It’s quite steep and there are lots of stairs [around 1200 in total] but they are well made, but a reasonable level of fitness is required. A bit of an adventure with quite a few historical notices and rest benches to break up the trip along with great views across the Cook Strait and you can easily see the South Island The path is mostly a wide good single track and takes just over 3 hours one way.

Solace in the Wind, by Max Patte. Image: James Coleman

If you only want to go one way, starting in Paekakariki is an easier climb and that’s what most people do. Also remember some cash for the commuter train back to your starting point. Trains run every 20 to 30 minutes.

Wandering the waterfront The Wellington Waterfront is one of the city’s most accessible and distinctive features. The council have gone to extraordinary lengths to make a wonderful asset to the community, which is fully embraced judging from the number of families, couples, runners and cyclists alike all out on a warm sunny late autumn Sunday. Aside some of the city’s

restaurants and bars with the best views onto the harbour there is a wonderful weekend market as you wander past Frank Kitts Park. There’s every type of cuisine available especially Asian flavours along with a decent cup of coffee available at every corner. My bacon and egg buttie with a large trim FW to wash it down was perfect as we sat on the

wall watching the passing parade and parents trying and failing to keep their kids under control. Locals head down to the market for fruit and vegetables along with independent artisans selling their small goods. The whole thing has the feel of an open-air European market. There is a plethora of sculptures unexpectedly dotting along the picturesque water’s edge. Continue past the rowing club and you’ll come across Kupe, the navigator’s statue with his wife, Hine Te Aparangi, and priest, Pekahourangi. Further round is Oriental Parade and even in early June there are people swimming from the beach to the water fountain in the early morning light Getting there ZQN to Wellington is about an hour and half with direct flight on either JetStar or Air NZ. Stay IBIS on Featherston Street Centrally located and reasonably new this is a mid-range hotel that’s ideally situated for the railway station, the shopping district and Wellington Waterfront.

A New Pacific Reset? Why NZ must prioritise climate change and labour mobility Australia’s minister for foreign affairs, Penny Wong, discussed Pacific affairs with her New Zealand counterpart, Nanaia Mahuta, in Wellington, June 16. Getty Images

The frequent use of the term “shared values” to describe developments in the Pacific tends to obscure a distinct shift in New Zealand and Australian relations with their Pacific partners over the past two decades. This shift has seen a move away from ready acceptance by Pacific nations of policy prescriptions reflecting “developed country” priorities, towards a greater insistence on New Zealand and Australian support for policies generated by those Pacific partners themselves. This shift has now been recognised by New Zealand’s foreign minister, Nanaia Mahuta, and more recently by Australia’s new foreign minister, Penny Wong, during her visit to New Zealand last week, giving credibility to a renewed Australian focus on the “Pacific family”. Perhaps the most obvious expression of those Pacific priorities and values relates to climate change. This existential challenge to island nations has been given the highest priority by Pacific governments, but has also been by far the most divisive factor in recent Australia and New Zealand relations with the Pacific. Successive Australian leaders have refused to consider commitments to climate change policies that Pacific countries see as critical to their longterm survival. Australian officials have worked to weaken the outcomes of international climate change conferences. Frustrated by Australia’s resistance to using the Pacific Islands Forum to demand more meaningful action on climate change, Pacific countries have felt compelled to seek participation in other international groups and forums where their priorities could be unambiguously advanced. Against this background, Wong’s post-election dash to Fiji was a necessary and timely “save”. Her catch-cry of “we have heard you and we are listening” crucially signalled a coming change in Australia’s climate change stance. A new regional convergence on climate change policy will remove a major irritant from Pacific relations and create a solid foundation for the partnership’s future. But ongoing commitment by Australia and New Zealand to climate change policies that are fit for purpose will be essential for its durability.

Fiji’s growing influence Fiji’s evolving position has been an important factor in the widening of Pacific states’ international relations. Following the 2006 coup, Fiji reacted to tensions with Australia and New Zealand by aggressively pursuing a “Look North” policy. It intensified trade and development partnerships with East Asian and other non-Western states (including China) and pressured other Pacific governments to follow its lead. While Fiji eventually moved away from its adversarial stance towards Australia and New Zealand, the legacy of that policy remains, in expanded connections with China and other non-Western countries.

In recent years, relations between New Zealand and Fiji have been progressively normalised. This is reflected, for example, in Fiji’s participation along with New Zealand and other partners in the proposed Agreement on Climate Change Trade and Sustainability (ACCTS). It was further cemented by New Zealand’s support for Fiji’s COVID vaccine rollout. In the meantime, Fiji has engaged energetically in international climate change diplomacy, positioning itself as a global champion of the Pacific’s priorities. This has enhanced its leadership credentials among Pacific Island Forum members, further amplified this year by its status as forum chair. The visits to Fiji earlier this year by New Zealand cabinet ministers Peeni Henare and Nanaia Mahuta, and the resulting Duavata Declaration, reflected both the realities of the renewed partnership and the modern regional role of both countries.

Understanding China’s misstep China’s recent failure to secure Pacific nations’ support for its proposed agreement on regional governance and security was greeted with relief by observers in New Zealand. But it’s important to recognise that failure was also a salutary demonstration of Pacific governments’ insistence that policies affecting the region must be based on decisions by those governments themselves, reflecting their own priorities. New Zealand has been wise to recognise this and allow space for regional governments to build consensus on relevant issues ahead of the coming meeting of Pacific Island Forum leaders.

Progress needed on labour mobility Looking to the future, the greatest potential contribution New Zealand can make to Pacific development lies in the expansion and broadening of labour mobility arrangements with Pacific partners. This has the added advantage that China will not realistically be able to match such arrangements. The impact of Pacific seasonal workers’ absence during the pandemic highlighted their importance to the New Zealand economy. Consultation should now take place both internally and with Pacific partners to design and implement an expanded range of labour mobility arrangements that both support Pacific development aspirations and deliver an economic benefit to New Zealand. During the recent Australian election campaign, both major parties indicated their intention to move ahead on this issue. It’s one area – among others – where New Zealand should not be seen to lag behind.
