To remote or not to remote

Green shoots are everywhere, figuratively speaking anyway, and business is finally picking up as the streets fill and international flights return once more. As this is happening, many businesses who have sent employees home to work remotely, ours included, are starting to figure out whether to continue or transition back to full-time in the office. It’s not an easy decision and even harder to implement. Many bosses overseas, further down the post-Covid path than Queenstown businesses, have tried to gently entice staff back and then quickly moved to a full-throttled demand to return. They’ve come up against a backlash from employees. Mind you, some of the requests are thinly veiled threats. Elon Musk reportedly told his management team at Tesla last week they should spend ‘at least’ 40 hours in the office each week, or quit. When asked for comment on Twitter about people who thought this was antiquated, he tweeted: “They should pretend to work somewhere else.” Apple have also experienced a massive revolt with their return-towork policy with key teams, including their critical leaders, resigning. Personally, I think it’s fascinating that these companies renowned for creating technology that enables people to work from anywhere, are demanding their own workforces come to the office. In Queenstown, I know a number of employers who are grappling with this issue and there is no easy answer. After two years of fighting to survive, businesses now want to welcome the teams to the office and grow back together in a post-pandemic life, but the streetscape and non-existent parking, if you are downtown, certainly complicate the discussion. On the other hand, the past two years have been a revelation, showing we can do many jobs from home, sometimes more productively. And while working on the dining table isn’t ideal, being at home makes it easier to juggle work life and family life, especially when the kids are at school. It also makes it harder to catch Omicron. With staffing pressure mounting and the immigration visa requirements getting even more draconian, the temptation is definitely to delay making any decisions that could aggravate staff, who are very much still in post-Covid fatigue mode. Losing any talent to another company that offers remote working options would be a disaster. That could increase pressure on other staff, decreasing overall productivity, effectively voiding any disadvantages from remote working. So, many businesses are continuing to work in a hybrid model. There are pros and cons, of course. Discussions with our team highlight more family time, no commute, no parking issues, fewer interruptions are improved work/life balance. But the downside is there is no offbutton with work hours being all hours, which I’m not sure long term is right either. I’d love to have the crystal ball right now. Clarke’s heritage honour by Paul Taylor

Seven months after being appointed director of Lakes District Museum, it was David Clarke’s great honour to welcome HRH Queen Elizabeth II to Arrowtown. On Monday, 32 years later, he pinned a photo of that day on his fridge as he prepared to welcome friends around to his house for a bubbles and cucumber sandwich garden party, to celebrate being awarded the Queen’s Service Medal. “I remember how nervous I was meeting her,” he says. “She would have only been 64 then, younger than I am now. The Queen is now celebrating her 96th birthday, so it is a case of ‘oh, have I been here that long?’ “It just feels like the perfect bookend to my career.” Clarke’s been awarded the QSM, in the Queen’s Birthday and Platinum Jubilee Honours List 2022, for services to heritage preservation in Queenstown Lakes District. Over the years, he’s led and advised on scores of heritage projects in the goldmining town and beyond, including restoring and protecting Arrowtown Miners Cottages, Arrowtown Gaol, Arrowtown Chinese Village and Arrowtown Post Office. He’s also coordinated the recording of more than 600 hours of oral history from Queenstown Lakes residents, to preserve local historical knowledge, and has curated more than 150 history and art exhibitions. In 2019, he began the campaign to raise the $3.5 million needed to restore and earthquake strengthen the museum’s former Bank of New Zealand building. “That was born out of ‘what the hell are we doing to do here?’ We had five years to get the building up to standard or we’d have to shut down a third of the museum. “We had no chance of raising the $3.5 million without some wealthy benefactor stepping forward or something happening, and then Covid came and worked in mysterious ways.” The museum successfully applied for $2m from the Government’s Shovel Ready funding, about $1m from Queenstown Lakes District Council and then Central Lakes Trust confirmed a $426,000 grant. “And suddenly we were fully funded.” The majority of building work on the 1875 building is now complete, running about four months behind schedule, and museum designers will be onsite over the next few weeks to work on the displays, ahead of a grand opening in December. “There’s a ton of work to do. We’ll gradually reopen the display areas as we finish them but the grand opening will be at the end of the year. It makes more sense to have it in summer, rather than the middle of winter. “But it looks fantastic, and will be lit up during the Matariki festival. It will be like a mini-Buckingham Palace.” The former two-term Arrowtown ward councillor has been actively involved in community and local government beyond his role with the museum, as an independent hearings commissioner, a long serving member of Arrowtown RSA, and various other roles. He received a letter a few weeks ago from the Governor General’s office, telling him he’d been nominated and asking if he’d like to accept. “And I thought ‘yep, I’ll do that’, not just for myself but for all the volunteers, all the doers in the various groups I’ve worked with.

“In terms of heritage, it’s the Queenstown and District Historical Society and all the people that stick their hand up to protect heritage buildings and heritage sites. I’ve assumed various leadership roles but in every one there are volunteers behind the scenes getting stuff done.” Wānaka’s Anne Urlwin and Paul McEwan were also recognised in the honours. Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC) board member Urlwin was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to business. She has been a director, a chartered accountant and business consultant for more than 20 years. She began her career with KPMG before undertaking senior management roles in the information technology and meat industries. She then moved into governance roles and is currently a director of Precinct Properties New Zealand Limited, Summerset Group Holdings Limited, Vector Limited, and Ventia Limited. Urlwin is also the Independent Chair of the Te Rūnanga Audit and Risk Committee of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and also serves on the boards of City Rail Link Limited and QAC. She has been deputy chair of Southern Response Earthquake Services, and chair of the New Zealand Blood Service and the Naylor Love Construction Group. She has held directorships with Chorus Limited, Tilt Renewables Limited, Cigna Life Insurance New Zealand, as well as Crown companies and sporting organisations including New Zealand Hockey. Paul McEwan was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to neonatal care. McEwan is a founding trustee and chair of the Canterbury Neonatal Unit Trust formed in 1992. The retired cricket player, who played four tests and 17 one-day international matches for the Black Caps and made more than 100 appearances for Canterbury cricket, led the Trust as it raised more than $600,000 for projects to support neonatal care, including supplying incubators adapted for the rescue helicopters, and providing a support package to families who reside outside of Christchurch but have their infant in the Christchurch Women’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Third candidate steps forward by Paul Taylor

He won his election to council on a coin-toss - now Glyn Lewers is bidding to become mayor. The Frankton-based councillor has announced his intention to stand for the top job at Queenstown Lakes District Council in the October elections. Lewers joins former Labour Party general election candidate Jon Mitchell and Startup Queenstown Lakes CEO and former lawyer Olivia Wensley in throwing his hat in the ring. Incumbent mayor Jim Boult is not seeking a third term. The 44-year-old first-term councillor took his seat at the table three years ago. But, after a recount, he was tied on 2183 votes with fellow candidate AJ Mason. It needed a coin-toss to decide who would become the sixth Wakatipu ward seat councillor, and Lewers won after choosing heads. He believes the council is such a complex organisation, it will need someone with local government governance experience in the mayoral seat. “Now, more than ever, we need someone with experience and knowledge of how our money is spent, to lead our district through this unprecedented time. “I bring an in-depth knowledge of council and I am keenly aware of the complex issues facing our tourism industry and how this affects our local economy. As a community volunteer, I’m also actively listening to our people and I understand the issues we all face day-to-day.” Satisfaction with the council and elected members has plummeted over the past three years, with its own Quality of Life survey showing a drop 34% to 25% for the council itself and 33% to 19% for elected members. Lewers understands the number of incumbent councillors intending to re-stand for council will be low – meaning there will be several new faces around the council table. He isn’t seeking re-election as a councillor, instead putting all his energy into the mayoral campaign. The structural engineer spent six years as a member of the Frankton Community Association, four of those as chair, and is also on the board of Destination Queenstown.

He believes that experience will stand him in good stead. “Council has got an annual budget of approximately $450 million, and is delivering an ambitious 10-year plan worth $1.67 billion. In my corporate life as an engineer, I managed multi-million dollar budgets for complex infrastructure projects – from budgeting, forecasting, implementing through to delivering the results,” he says. A father of two boys, aged nine and 13, he also volunteers as a rugby coach for Wakatipu High School – a continuation of his seven-year junior rugby coaching tenure with the Wakatipu Junior Rugby Club. Local body elections will be held on October 8, 2022 and candidate nominations officially open on Friday July 15, 2022.

25% Off Hibernating Dr Compost, aka Ben Elms, explains what you should be doing in your garden over the dark and wintery months. It’s June, yeehaa! Only three dark and dank months to go until spring. 12 short weeks, 83 wonderful days till the sun starts to warm your bones and your soil. It’s time to hibernate like a bear and drink like a Scotsman (single malt whiskeys here we come). Now we can just about ignore the garden at this point in time, but (and there’s always a but), some work done now will pay dividends in the spring. So, here’s four things you could do: 1. Mulch. How are those winter veggies growing? Have you been successful? Picking leafy green salads and broccolini to your heart’s content? If so, grab some of your compost and give these cut-and-grow-again plants a little side dressing to warm their cockles. Are they happily mulched? If not, chuck it on and keep them cosy. By mulching your plants and beds over winter you’re protecting the soil from rain compaction, and from rain leaching those hard-earned nutrients in the soil. By mulching now you’ll also prevent your beds being full of weeds by September. 2. When was the last time you put lime on your veggie bed? Lime (calcium, not the fruit!) is one of the essential building blocks of soil and plant health and should be applied to your veggie beds at least once a year. Mix four parts flour lime with one part Dolomite and apply this mix to your soils. 3. It’s a great time to make a big compost heap, tidy up around your property, do a final grass cut, deadhead flowers, pull out the weeds, chop up corn and Jerusalem artichoke plants and tidy up your weedy pathways (put something down to stop the weeds growing –maybe some old carpet and cardboard).

Golf course holes could be cut by Paul Taylor

Public consultation has opened on plans to reduce Frankton Golf Centre’s course to eight holes to make way for road improvements. The current first and ninth holes, which border State Highway 6 and 6A, are on land needed for a new bus lane and traffic light intersection, which will replace the old Frankton BP roundabout. The $115 million NZUP Queenstown Package programme needs about 8,230sqm of golf centre land, which is owned by the Crown through the Department of Conservation, and managed by Queenstown Lakes District Council. It also needs 2,493sqm of land from the neighbouring Queenstown Events Centre, also next to SH6. The course would be reorientated to become eight holes and a driving range. Six weeks of public consultation began on Friday, 3 June, after the consultation was approved by councillors at Thursday’s full council meeting.

Frankton-based councillor Glyn Lewers said he was concerned this was the “beginning of the end” for the course.

Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult said he’d seen many emails about the suggestion in the past week.

“It’s death by a thousand cuts, and this is the first 100.”

And Arrowtown ward councillor Heath Copland told councillors: “I think we’re in for an absolute beating from the public when we take this proposal out for consultation.”

He questioned whether reorientating the course, would see the council putting money “into something that in the end won’t be there” in five or six years. Cr Penny Clark asked what had become of plans to move the course.

The future of Frankton Golf Centre has been in doubt for decades. Initially earmarked for Queenstown Airport expansion and, more recently, for a potential transport hub and emergency precinct.

Council boss Mike Theelen responded that was one of a range of options, “but let’s not kid ourselves, we know how hard it is to buy land in this district at an affordable price for yet another golf course”.

Council masterplans have mooted the possibility of a replacement course on Shotover Delta.

Some of the course, along with the netball courts at Queenstown Events Centre, is on land leased from Queenstown Airport, and conversation are ongoing about the land holdings.

But, it has survived so far, providing a more accessible way to play than its more expensive and exclusive cousins, Kelvin Heights, The Hills, Millbrook and Jack’s Point. Cr Craig Ferguson said it was a bit like Groundhog Day for some councillors. “I do hold out hope that this course will survive in an acceptable state as we continue this ongoing game of chess,” Ferguson said. “I am concerned about what may lie in some of our iconic green spaces, I just don’t feel that we’re working hard enough to try and protect what’s perceived to be important to our community in this space.” He said the potential “traffic shambles” from the work throws shade on the report.

But, he said, there remains an “overriding commitment” to retain a casual course in the district, where players do not have to be members, providing a pathway for juniors into the game, as required by Golf New Zealand. QLDC Sport & Recreation manager Simon Battrick told councillors the trend, especially overseas, is to try and shorten the game as much as possible, as people don’t have time to play 18 holes, or 9 holes. “Whether it’s little par-three courses, or six holes and a driving range, which enables you to still hit a ball and aim at targets,” he said. Theelen also expects it “won’t be an easy consultation” as the council and community balance the amenity of a public golf course and green space against improving the busiest intersection in the district.

Direct flights resume with Gold Coast by Paul Taylor

Queenstown Airport welcomed back Jetstar’s Gold Coast route on Thursday with JQ193 touching down at 11.25am, a few minutes ahead of schedule. CEO Glen Sowry said it’s great to see another Australian route back. Qantas resumed trans-Tasman flights to ZQN last week. “We are thrilled to see Jetstar flying across the Tasman again and are welcoming those Queenslanders with open arms,” he says. “Both the inbound and outbound flight were approximately 75% full which is a great sign for the winter ahead.” Local residents now have the opportunity to fly direct to Gold Coast and Sydney once more, while direct routes to Melbourne and Brisbane start back up on 18 June.

Air New Zealand returns to their Tasman routes on 24 June. Despite Covid-19, passenger numbers at Queenstown Airport reached 1.1 million over the past 12 months, down by 3.7% compared to the previous 12 months. In April, there were 114,459 passenger movements (arrivals and departures), down 12% on April 2021. There were 958 aircraft movements, all domestic as there were no scheduled international flights. Numbers are expected to pick up significantly over the coming months, as Queenstown welcomes back overseas travellers.

Top Gun: Maverick is a film obsessed with its former self Author: Erin Harrington, Senior Lecturer in English and Cultural Studies, University of Canterbury

Legacy films are more than a sequel: they hand franchises down to a new generation of viewers, passing a cultural baton. At the opening night screening I attended of Top Gun: Maverick, when the lights went down, someone loudly whispered “let’s go!” – a perfect evocation of such films’ sense of expectation and repetition. Films can’t entirely escape their contexts. Top Gun (1986), an arena rock concert of a film, paints hot-shot US Navy aviator Lt Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) as a charismatic all-American rebel. He doesn’t play by the rules, but knows how to be loyal when it counts. Maverick and his best friend Lt Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) train at the elite Naval Fighter Weapons School, dubbed TOPGUN, which schools the “best of the best” in aerial dog-fighting. Accompanied by a hyper-masculine soundtrack of screaming electric guitars and thudding synths, the reckless Maverick must negotiate his grief at Goose’s accidental death, his rivalry with Lt Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (Val Kilmer) and the long shadow of his father’s reputation – before beating out enemy fighters and getting the girl. In this new film, Maverick, now a test pilot, is reluctantly recalled to TOPGUN to train top graduates in a seemingly impossible mission of global importance – or be grounded forever.

A film obsessed with itself WLike recent legacy hits such as the third Star Wars trilogy, Blade Runner 2049 and The Matrix: Resurrections, Top Gun: Maverick is a film obsessed with its earlier self. It’s still a competition film with exhilarating action and flight sequences. It matches many of the original film’s narrative and emotional beats. It restages key moments and re-imagines others. The film revisits old characters, reworks the original score and incorporates earlier footage into flashbacks. It surrounds the characters with photographs of their younger selves. It even rolls its end credits over the same burnt orange skies. Legacy films always have an implicit relationship with the older films’ ideas and politics, and the conditions of their creation. Top Gun heralded a new, powerful relationship between Hollywood and the US Department of Defense that persists today. Producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson had pitched a film to the Pentagon based on journalist Ehud Yonay’s 1983 article Top Guns well before any screenplay was written. The US Navy was actively seeking a beneficial project to support. The Navy offered significant practical support and had input into the script, and the film was regarded as a seductive recruitment tool.

The TOPGUN program The TOPGUN program was established by the US Navy in 1969 to train elite pilots in response to aerial combat failures during the Vietnam War. The 1986 film helped rehabilitate the US military’s image in popular culture after Vietnam. The film expressed vibrantly the jingoistic patriotism of the Reagan era. The Americans are noble good guys who don’t shoot first. The “bogeys” are faceless antagonists, their red star insignia and Soviet MiGs marking them part of a Communist threat. The geopolitics of Top Gun: Maverick are vague, even chaste. The baddies are an unnamed power that has developed a secret uranium enrichment facility deep within a mountainous region. They are a threat to NATO allies, have superior technology, and anonymous soldiers – and that’s it.

Tom Cruise in his white t-shirt still looks like a present-day James Dean. Skydance Media

This doesn’t affect the action, but the mission is backdrop to a small-scale, human story about bridging intergenerational divides, coming to terms with the past and re-establishing familial bonds. It is inoffensive enough to cater to Hollywood’s global audience. Beyond mention of contemporary American pilots spending more time dropping bombs from on high than engaging in aerobatic dogfights, and passing references to Iraq and Bosnia, this is a military film largely devoid of war. It has a pervasive sense of naivete. Tom Cruise in his white t-shirt still looks like a present-day James Dean. It is nostalgic more for images and stories of loyalty and heroism than the murky conditions of conflict.

What is the conflict? The thrumming, sexualised, objectophilic tension of the first film centred on the sweaty, muscular white bodies of its cast and similarly muscular images of military technology. The disciplined, diverse cast of young fighter pilots of Top Gun: Maverick are up against a more insidious foe: skilled human pilots are replaced by unmanned drones. Maverick, we are told, is a fossil – the last of his kind. We hear time is the pilots’ greatest adversary; Maverick is about to be grounded for good; the future is coming and Maverick isn’t it. But Maverick’s heroism persists in his concern for people, their families and their jobs. We are repeatedly told superior technology is one thing, but it’s not the plane that’s important. It’s the (American) pilot and their instincts. Maverick is Tom Cruise, the singular ageing movie star-hero hybrid. The film is a celebration of film itself. This is a proper blockbuster of old that can bring in the punters at cinemas. In the film’s dynamic climax, Maverick seeks to demonstrate just how powerful the old gear, and the old ways, still are. It’s not subtle. In Top Gun, the takeaway message was constant vigilance was a means of upholding American exceptionalism. In this film, we hear the end might be coming, but there is still much more in the tank. That may well be the case for the traditional action blockbuster, which is one of the United States’ greatest global exports. But well after the end of the “American Century”, and at a time of significant domestic and global disruption, this might be a more nuanced and complicated statement than intended.

Who wants to use Ladies Mile Community Centre? by Paul Taylor

Local community and recreation groups keen to make use of the new facility at 516 Ladies Mile can now submit an expression of interest to the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC). This follows the recent approval of just over $3.66 million to proceed with retrofitting the existing house on the property into a multi-purpose community facility. QLDC Sport and Recreation Manager, Simon Battrick, said that Ignite Architects had been appointed, following a competitive tender process. “It’s exciting to start the next phase of the project to determine design and use,” Battrick says. “We’ve already received over 300 community ideas via our recent open day which will form part of the brief to the architects. “The expression of interest process will help us to refine the community need and work through how we can accommodate a diverse range of activity and interest groups with the limited space available. Lake Hayes and Shotover Country Community Association chair Anita Golden says it is great to see the project moving forward. “The community has provided a lot of feedback for Ignite Architects to consider and we’re excited to see what they come up with in their initial design plans,” Golden says. “We’re hopeful for a functional facility that allows us to come together and connect with other community members.” Ignite Architects Associate Director Jeremy Dunlop is excited to be part of bringing an iconic landmark back to life. “For me personally, it is an exciting project to be involved with as it is located in the heart of my own local neighbourhood,” Dunlop says. “It will be a great place for people of all ages who live in the area to gravitate to for a wide range of activities and will hopefully grow and develop over time.” Anyone interested in submitting an expression of interest should visit letstalk. qldc.govt.nz. Expressions of interest opened on Friday, 3 June, and close at 5pm on Sunday 19 June.

ORC appoints interim chief executive by Paul Taylor

Dr Pim Borren has been appointed interim chief executive of the Otago Regional Council, following the resignation of Sarah Gardner, who left the organisation last month. His appointment was confirmed by ORC councillors in an emergency council meeting on Tuesday. Dr Borren’s experience to date covers more than 27 years in corporate, local government, tertiary education and private sector economics, which includes 15 years as a public sector chief executive. ORC chair Andrew Noone says he is pleased to announce the appointment. “Dr Borren is an experienced chief executive in both the public and private sectors, and will start on the 7 June. The interim role is for approximately nine months, or until a permanent CE is appointed,” Noone says. The search and appointment of a permanent chief executive will be undertaken by the new Council, following the October elections. Noone thanked acting CE Nick Donnelly for his contribution and leadership during the past three weeks. Borren, 61, has an impressive CV. He was OSPRI NZ’s interim chief executive, and joint chief executive for NZ Bus & Coach and the NZ Rental Vehicle Association. From 2014-2018 he was chief executive of the Masterton District Council. His most recent appointment was as chief economist to the Government

COMMUNITY NOTES Parkrun: fun, inclusivity, dinosaurs and running by Jamie Seymour

Parkruns are free, weekly running events that take place all around the world. Just like the name suggests, people come together every Saturday to run 5km (or 2km) in their local park, beach or promenade. The volunteer-run events started in the UK in 2004. There are now more than 2,000 Parkrun locations in 22 countries across five continents including 37 events across New Zealand.

Community News Cancer Society is calling for volunteers for Daffodil Day The Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day is on Friday, 26 August and volunteer leads are needed in the Frankton region. Daffodil Day wouldn’t be possible without the help of our wonderful volunteers. Supporting Daffodil Day means no one in our community goes through cancer alone. Since 1990, Daffodil Day has inspired people to come together and support the Cancer Society’s work and raise awareness of cancer in New Zealand. Every dollar raised for Daffodil Day will go towards cancer care for patients and their whānau, education and awareness programmes, and lifesaving cancer research. The Cancer Society’s volunteers come from all walks of life, but they are all committed to reducing the impact and incidence of cancer. Leading Daffodil Day includes engaging with existing volunteers to organise collection sites, daffodil pre-sales activities, and other tasks to ensure the day runs smoothly. There are so many skilled volunteers who are already committed to helping this role. Our annual street appeal is re-emerging in our communities face-to-face this year.

It’s a beautifully simple concept: turn up every Saturday and run or walk 5km. It doesn’t matter how fast you go. It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing. What matters is taking part. In Queenstown, there’s a Parkrun event every Saturday in the Queenstown Gardens, starting at the band rotunda. Wanaka has an event too, starting and finishing at Wanaka Station Park. Both events start at 9 am in winter and 8 am in summer. Parkrun is all about inclusiveness and wellbeing. It’s a positive and welcoming experience where there is no time limit, and no one finishes last. It’s all about being part of your local community, brought together by the love of running and a sense of belonging to one big global Parkrun family. At the local Parkrun events, runners and volunteers head for a coffee together at Yonder in Queenstown or Edgewater Resort in Wanaka. It really is a social event! That’s why Parkruns are never more than 5km – it’s a distance that anyone can complete (even if some of us are walking by the end…). And it’s why the format of Parkrun is so simple: register online once (parkrun.co.nz/ queenstown or parkrun.co.nz/wanaka), then turn up and take part wherever you want, whenever you want. Many people who have become fans take part at a Parkrun wherever they are on a Saturday, turning this free running event into a holiday tradition. Parkrunners love any reason for a fancy dress Parkrun, especially at Halloween and Christmas. So this Saturday (11th June) we’re inviting everyone to join us for a special dinosaur/Jurassic Park-themed Parkrun event, in celebration of four years of Parkrun in Queenstown. Whether you walk, jog, run, volunteer, or simply want to watch dinosaurs running around the Queenstown Memorial Gardens, all are welcome. If you’d like to run this Saturday, don’t forget to register online and print or screenshot your barcode. We’ll see you there; dinosaurs, runners, walkers and spectators alike: 9 am at the band rotunda. Raaw!

If you would like to help us bring new life to Daffodil Day by coming on board to help us shape the next era of fundraising for Cancer Society, or have any questions, please email charlotte. molloy@cansoc.org.nz or call Charlotte on 021 221 4237.

Less grit and more CMA on the roads this winter As winter approaches the road safety messages are re-appearing as are the reminders about having chains in the boot just in case….. Council will be using a lot more Calcium Magnesium Acetate (CMA) on the roads that are prone to be icy, this year. CMA is a biodegradable and environmentally friendly de-icing agent the road contractors spray to stop ice forming, and it lasts for seven days and works when road temperatures are above -7°C. This year there will be more CMA on roads, footpaths and active travel routes, which will mean there will be less grit on your winter travels, and hopefully a lot less slip.

‘Top Gun Maverick’ Breaks opening records in US with $US160 Million Tom Cruise’s blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick” capped off the US Memorial Day weekend with a box office debut for the record books. The sequel, which sees Cruise return to the cockpit after 36 years, collected $160.5 million in its first four days of release. Those ticket sales were enough to overtake Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” which launched with $153 million over the long weekend in 2007, as the biggest Memorial Day debut in history. Paramount and Skydance had originally expected “Top Gun: Maverick” to generate $124 million between Friday and Sunday and finish the long weekend with $151 million. At the international box office, the sequel to 1986’s “Top Gun” took flight with $139 million, boosting its global total past $300 million.

A 3400-year-old city emerges from the Tigris River A team of German and Kurdish archaeologists have uncovered a 3400-year-old Mittani Empire-era city once located on the Tigris River. The settlement emerged from the waters of the Mosul reservoir early this year as water levels fell rapidly due to extreme drought in Iraq. The extensive city with a palace and several large buildings could be ancient Zakhiku – believed to have been an important center in the Mittani Empire (ca. 1550-1350 BC). Iraq is one of the countries in the world most affected by climate change. The south of the country in particular has been suffering from extreme drought for months. To prevent crops from drying out, large amounts of water have been drawn down from the Mosul reservoir – Iraq’s most important water storage – since December. This led to the reappearance of a Bronze Age city that had been submerged decades ago without any prior archaeological investigations. It is located at Kemune in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Within a short time, the researchers succeeded in largely mapping the city. In addition to a palace, which had already been documented during a short campaign in 2018, several other large buildings were uncovered – a massive fortification with wall and towers, a monumental, multi-storey storage building and an industrial complex. The extensive urban complex dates to the time of the Empire of Mittani (approx. 1550-1350 BC), which controlled large parts of northern Mesopotamia and Syria. University of Tübingen

Local environment and population demographics, not genetics, influence bottlenose dolphin ‘names’ New research suggests that it is the local ocean environment and population demographics, and not genetics, that best explains the different lengths and pitches of signature whistles—the unique identifying call akin to a name—between common bottlenose dolphin populations in the Mediterranean Sea. As with other dolphin species, common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) communicate using a range of whistles, including a ‘signature whistle’ which is unique to each animal. TREVOR GAMBLE TAKING A GAMBLE

Renowned as Queenstown’s founding ‘Father of Adventure Tourism,’ Trevor Gamble took a gamble himself, developing what is now one of the world’s most thrilling wild canyon river jet boat rides, Shotover Jet.

A very young Trevor in Shotover Jet uniform with his first boat behind in the early 1970s

Life wasn’t easy for Trevor, born in 1939 into an Otara farming family in Southland, the youngest of seven kids. Diagnosed with tuberculosis at the age of six, Trevor was eight and a half when he could return to school, therefore only gaining one year’s secondary education. Sadly, his mother passed away when he was just 11. However, hardship wasn’t holding this budding young entrepreneur back. At 16, while doing his bricklaying apprenticeship in the 1960s, Trevor discovered books on the power of positive thinking and getting rich quickly. By 22 he had built his own flats in Invercargill. He then battled bureaucracy to build some of the city’s first ownership flats, acting as designer, project manager and selling them off the plans himself. New careers were a piece of cake for Trevor. While he was laid up off work after slicing through a tendon in his foot, he spotted a tender up for grabs for Shotover Jet in Queenstown. He and young wife, Heather, put in the successful bid and in 1970 they bought the business for $11,110 and moved to Queenstown with their two young children. “I’d never driven a jet boat of any kind before, so I spent the first year just driving the passengers down the middle of the river as the trip had been when Herm Palmer had owned it,” says Trevor. It was a ‘gamble’, confident enough skimming around overhangs of the

but after a year Trevor was to add some courageous the rocky outcrops and rugged Shotover Canyon,

throwing in a few squeal-inducing ‘Hamilton turns.’ There were no Occupational Safety and Health regulations back then and it was just the thrill that tourists were looking for. Adventure tourism was born and Trevor was believed to be the first in the world to let loose with his unique style thrill-seeking rides on the river.

“After a couple of seasons, I was getting my head around what I could and couldn’t do,” he says. “I was able to read the passengers well enough to know just how close I could go to the rock faces.” He recalls toning it down after a passenger complained to his van driver that he’d driven too close to the rocks. “A few days later when a 70-something lady with a hearing aid was lowered into the boat I did a more conservative trip, missing the rocks by three or four feet,” says Trevor. “I was about to bring the boat carefully to a halt when that lady butted in, outraged at how boring the ride was,” grins Trevor. “It turns out she’d brought her husband back after doing the trip with me the year before, so I promptly upgraded the rest of the trip to my usual standard.” He drove the boats himself for the first five years, and for the next 16 years Trevor worked 15-hour days, seven days a week during peak summer. Heather ran ticketing from a little shack on the beach, managing the kids around that. “We closed during winter and on rainy days.” The first year they ran 6500 passengers, double the previous owner.” Within a few years they were geared up for 25 trips a day. “One summer I did 147 trips in six days,” he says. Eventually Big Red was joined by two more boats and Trevor employed drivers to help, eight within 10 years. Among the stayers were Greg Ross, Tim Warwick, Mark Quickfall, Bill Cook, Phil Ball, Andy Hooper, and Tony Warwick. “We were a family and Heather was like a mum to all of the boys.”

Trevor (left) in his Captain’s hat with a female passenger during the early 1970s

welcoming tourists and friendly smile, found his niche owning a taxi. From there, Dale Zimmerman invited him to become a host and driver for her and Walter’s Queenstown Limousine Tours, driving all over the South Island. Renowned for his well-researched, informative spiels, it suited Trevor’s personality just fine. Looking back at 83, it was “probably a bit scary” learning to drive those high-powered Hamilton Jets razor close to massive rocks, but Trevor took it all in his stride. “Nobody else was doing what we did anywhere that we knew of. Many countries hadn’t even heard of a jet boat, so we were among the first in the world to launch adventure tourism.” It was a gamble that paid off. His advice to others with a great idea: “Go for it! If you don’t, you’ll never make it.”

Shotover Jet was gaining national, and even international, notoriety and Trevor became a founding member of Queenstown’s Top 5 tourist attractions marketing group in the late 70s. In 1986, Shotover Jet carried 58,600 passengers, and Trevor was awarded the Newman Award by the NZ Tourist Industry Federation for his contribution to New Zealand tourism and jet boating. The Gambles sold the business later that year to Jim Boult and they built three downtown commercial buildings. In the 1987 share market crash they lost everything and were forced to sell them. In true Gamble style they picked themselves up, dusted off, and bought Fuji Image in town before Trevor, with his many years of

Arts+Culture Record-breaking number of entries in Children’s Book Awards by Bethany Rogers

The 2022 New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults attracted a recordbreaking 199 entries, with 28 titles announced as finalists last week.

Sonya Wilson’s Fiordland epic is a finalist in Junior Fiction and Best First Book award categories. The 2022 New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults’ convenor of judges, Pauline (Vaeluaga) Smith, said the finalists cover a range of themes.

It’s the highest number of submissions ever received for the Awards, which are the pre-eminent celebration of publishing for young people in Aotearoa.

“This year’s entries explore a vast range of topics, including protest, autism, gender equality, racism, and history, providing a platform for thoughtful and, hopefully, some gritty discussions.

There are six categories in the award, each celebrating a different area of children’s literature; picture books, junior fiction, young adult fiction, non-fiction, illustration, te reo Māori and an award for best first book.

“These big topics are so important for sparking conversations with tamariki and rangatahi. Being able to think about and discuss them critically is crucial given the disruptions over the past few years and the rise of misinformation young people now face.”

Last year’s awards saw Queenstown-based illustrator and author of the Hare & Ruru as a finalist in two categories and taking the top prize for illustration. This year’s finalists include Emily Joe’s My Cat Can See Ghosts, answering the eternal question: what exactly is your cat staring at? I am Autistic by Chanelle Moriah contextualises the autistic experience, with tips, journal exercises and real-life examples. Then there’s I Waho, i te Moana by Yvonne Morrison, recognised for its educational content that encourages growth in mathematics and te reo capability. One finalist that has local (ish) roots is Sonya Wilson’s Spark Hunter. Published by The Cuba Press, Spark Hunter is an epic fantasy set in Fiordland. Dealing with themes of conservation and courage, the story follows Nissa, who strays from her school camp in the Fiordland bush, following mysterious moving lights. Nissa learns she’s been chosen for a special mission in a world of ancient creatures that need help.

Art News Waterloo Bridge masterpiece by Claude Monet expected to sell for $46m An “iconic work” by the impressionist master Claude Monet that has been in the same family for more than 70 years is expected to sell for at least £24m (NZ$46m) next month. Waterloo Bridge, Effet de Brume is one of 41 paintings by Monet of the bridge across the Thames. In terms of capturing light and atmosphere, this painting is “what he was striving for – it is a masterpiece of this body of work”, said Keith Gill, the head of impressionist and modern art at Christie’s in London, which is selling the work. It was painted while Monet was resident at the Savoy hotel, in a room with a balcony with views of Waterloo and Charing Cross bridges and the Houses of Parliament. He painted all three views repeatedly, often putting canvasses aside for days while he waited for the right atmosphere. The Guardian

Pauline added that it’s not all serious, with the authors having fun with themes for young readers, and that plenty of the finalist books will delight and entertain. The growing strength of books with te ao Māori worldview and the growing number and quality of titles in te reo Māori also stood out to this year’s judges. “Māori language and world views are taonga unique to Aotearoa. Having these valued in children’s literature is an encouraging sign of the growth of our nation,” says Pauline. The award winners will be announced in Wellington on Wednesday 10th August. All of the books are available through booksellers across New Zealand and more can be found about the awards and finalists at nzbookawards.nz

THE TIGHT FIVE: JONNY NIESCHE As we anticipate the return of First Thursdays Queenstown we’re asking artists five questions about their practice. This week we interview Jonny Niesche, an artist known for his lushly seductive and mesmerising surfaces. When in your practice did it all click? Late one night in the studio I was experimenting with glitter and paint and in the soft light the glitter sparkled as I moved, responding to the changing angle of light. It was that moment I realised I wanted to make work about fairies. No just kidding, it was that moment I realised I wanted to make work that was always changing and shifting as you navigated it, never sitting still like a static two–dimensional painting Your paintings, sculptures, and light boxes are seductive to be in front of. How do you explore space, colour, and sensation in your practice? I utilise materials like transparent fabrics and mirrors that reflect the viewer in the work, that play with the viewer’s perception. I am interested in our core responses to colour and experience, that cut away all the noise of the every day. Your work draws on popular culture, what are you draw to and why? I am interested in the idea of desire and our relationship to it. A lot of my references come from fashion and from idols like rock stars and fashion icons. Colour has such a deep impact in the way we respond to it. I was transfixed as a kid in the cosmetics section of a department store because of the seductive colours specifically designed to beautify, to make you sexier, more desirable. So in my work I take digital samples of artist’s make up from their album covers, like Debbie Harry or David Bowie, as reference points to create new colour palettes and combinations. What’s your biggest barrier to being an artist? Sydney is expensive so studio rent is very high. Plus you need a lot of time in the studio, making, researching, trying things out. But you need income to pay for the studio and materials. So you often need to work in

other jobs to pay for these. But then you end up working a lot and have less time in the studio. A tricky cycle. Also to be seen and heard can be very tough. How do you find the right platform to show your work? How do you get shows with nothing on your CV? I could go on for ages, art is a tough gig! Your works are known for their beauty and urban allure. What role does sensuality play in your practice? I think as a society we have an obsession with desire, with sex and beauty. The desire for escape to this unattainable, ultimate place or experience. I make work that I want to see, to feel and experience and I think this carries through in the work. Jonny Niesche is exhibiting at Starkwhite, 1–7 Earl Street, Queenstown

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN

Adventure film fest announces winners by Paul Taylor

NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival judges have chosen the film award winners ahead of the festival, which kicks off later this month in Wānaka and Queenstown. The international adventure film competition attracted 150 entries, with 63 films being selected to screen at the event, includes several world and New Zealand premieres. Over $5000 has been awarded across eight film categories with NZ filmmakers well represented amongst the winners. The Grand Prize of $1000 USD was awarded to House of the Gods by UK director Matt Pycroft. The film follows renowned British climber and adventurer Leo Houlding as he and his team embark on their real-world quest through 100km of untracked jungle, into a unique slime forest and up the desperately steep face of Mount Roraima in the depths of the Amazon rainforest. Pycroft says it’s a “real privilege and joy” to win the award for ‘House of the Gods’, by far their most ambitious film to date. “It was a totally different undertaking for me both from an expedition perspective but also a film production perspective. What excited me about this project outside of just getting to go on the most sensational cutting-edge trip with a group of people I adore, was the prospect of travelling up the wall with two local indigenous Akawaio. Matt Pycroft

“These are the people who live at the base of Mount Roraima, who revere this mountain as a sacred place, and to climb it with them and that team was an unbelievable experience.” House of the Gods will be screened as part of the evening session on Saturday 25 June in Wānaka and Thursday 30 June in Queenstown.

Traversing the Night, directed by Maddy Whittaker, won best NZ film

As well as showcasing the beautiful alpine scenery and the enthusiasm of four young climbers, the film is a brave and honest account of the director’s personal journey to address her underlying depression. Whittaker says that the film is for the third of the audience that will experience as significant period of “extended mental distress” in their life, and the fifth of the audience that has a current depression diagnosis. “I’ve seen a lot of films in the outdoor world about incredible people doing incredible things,” she explains. “But I had seen very few where the main character isn’t just portrayed as strong or brave in the face of adversity. And, so, when I found myself feeling far from strong and brave on our threemonth traverse of the Southern Alps from Arthur’s Pass to Fiordland, I felt weak and like a failure. “This film is an attempt to change this untrue narrative through a raw and real account of my journey through both the mountains of the Southern Alps and the mountains of my mind. It’s a huge honour to have the hundreds and hundreds of hours I spent working on this film recognised with this award.” Whittaker will be at the festival to present her film which will be screened at the afternoon session on Saturday 25 June in Wānaka and the evening of Thursday 30 June in Queenstown.

The prestigious Hiddleston/MacQueen Award for Best NZ-Made Film, along with a $2500 prize goes to director Maddy Whittaker for Traversing the Night.

Festival Director, Mark Sedon, says: “I’m so excited by the high calibre of NZ-made films we received this year. Kiwis have really been getting out there and pushing their limits, capturing amazing footage, then turning it into a film for us to enjoy. It’s inspiring!”

A former student of the Adventure Film School, which runs every year as part of the NZ Mountain Film Festival, Whittaker’s film follows the four ‘New Zealand Alpine Kids’ as they set off from Arthur’s Pass on a three-month journey to traverse the spine of the Southern Alps all the way to Fiordland.

Labour’s fourth ‘well-being budget’ still comes up short on the well-being of women Authors: Jennifer Curtin, Professor of Politics and Policy, University of Auckland Komathi Kolandai, Research Fellow, University of Auckland Oluwakemi Igiebor, Research Fellow, Public Policy Institute, University of Auckland Suzy Morrissey, Research Associate, Public Policy Institute, University of Auckland

All budgets are about economics and politics, and 2022’s was no different. The Labour government continued its economic rebuild through commitments to infrastructure and industry, low- and middle-income earners’ living costs, and the successful implementation of signature reforms in health and climate. Commentators judged it largely responsible, given the backdrop of international disruption, risks of continued inflation and stretched supply chains. The reaction to how New Zealand’s women fared, however, has been mixed. Politically, Labour needed to reassure both core and softer voters with this budget. And since the 1990s, women have been an important source of soft votes for Labour. Under John Key, National closed the gender gap that had opened under Helen Clark’s previous administration. But women voters began to return to Labour in 2017 and overwhelmingly supported Labour in 2020. The NZ Election Study shows 51% of women respondents voted Labour compared to 21% for National. These figures suggest support from women cannot be taken for granted.

Hits and misses What did the 2022 budget offer New Zealand’s diverse communities of women and non-binary people? There was some good news: the NZ$580m package for Māori and Pacific initiatives and additional funding for the prevention of family and sexual violence were welcome. So were increases for specialist mental health and addiction services, to health practitioners for care of intersex children and young people, and to ACC for injuries that birthing parents suffer. Sole parent beneficiaries will now receive child support payments as income. And because women continue to earn on average less than men, the additional $350 cost-of-living payment matters. But it isn’t all good news. The equal employment opportunities commissioner has highlighted the cost-of-living payment excludes beneficiaries, and pay gaps affecting Māori, Pacific, ethnic communities and disabled whānau have been overlooked. Such gaps could be addressed if government ministries were required to undertake intersectional analysis of their budget proposals to ensure inequalities based on such things as race, gender, ethnicity, class or sexual orientation aren’t reinforcing one another. For example, we know women were disproportionately affected by COVID-19 job losses, with wahine Māori and Pacific women experiencing the highest rates of unemployment. We also know the underutilisation rate for women is almost four percentage points higher than for men.

Women in work The budget’s investment in construction, advanced manufacturing, digital tech and agricultural industries, along with the continuation of the Apprenticeship Boost have been positively received. But as with previous budgets, inclusive outcomes are complicated by the gender segregation within our labour market. To be fair, the government has

funded initiatives to encourage women to move into these industries, and the number of women working in construction has increased by 12,600 since 2020. Proportionally, however, women are only 15% of the sector (a two point increase over two years). Likewise, there has been little increase in the representation of women employed in manufacturing. Figures from the digital technology sector are harder to distil. According to industry group NZTech, only 27% of digital technology roles were held by women, while employment of Māori and Pacific Peoples was at 4% and 2.8% respectively. The 2022 OECD Economic Survey of New Zealand, and the NZTech and Digital Skills Forum, have both identified the need to develop digital apprenticeships, design inclusive education pathways, and actively support careers for women, Māori and Pacific people in this sector.

Genuine well-being We also need to remember that continuing to invest in the care economy and social sectors will benefit post-pandemic recovery. Caring for future generations through climate change mitigation and emissions reductions was also a significant part of this budget. The $150 million investment in clean vehicles, and $109 million for active and public transport initiatives, are commendable. But applying an equity and gender analysis to these initiatives would reveal the complexities associated with assuming that all New Zealanders will be able to avail themselves of these “greener” options. For example, New Zealand’s National Climate Change Risk Assessment identified how the impacts of climate change can exacerbate existing inequities for those marginalised by ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, age, literacy or health. While women are interested in electric vehicles, the extended (permanent for some) discounts on public transport fares are more likely to benefit them than a clean vehicle rebate; women are more likely than men to use public transport, in part because of their lower income levels. But cost is not the only barrier to using public transport. Safety is also important, meaning connection times between services, regular rural and regional services, street lighting and distances between stops and work or home matter to women. The budget statement released in December 2021 included evidence that New Zealand women felt a lot less safe than men. The Treasury cites OECD figures that reveal New Zealand’s gender gap on feeling safe is second highest, only slightly better than Australia. So there is more work for the government to do to ensure inequities are systematically addressed through public policy and the budget process. Perhaps the best starting point would be a requirement that all state agencies include gender in their calculations and analysis. That way New Zealand can truly be a leader on budgeting for “well-being”.
