Road to recovery

When Qantas flight QF121 touched down at ZQN from Sydney last Monday, it felt like the end of the pandemic for Queenstown. It was the first direct flight from Australia for 330 days. The first since the trans-Tasman bubble burst. A reconnection with our tourism water main, so the tap can finally be turned back on. Now, I must admit, I wasn’t there, so I can’t tell you what the scene was like. Last April, I was at the airport to report on the first flight of the bubble. There were stilt walkers, flags, banners, Jim Boult with a beaming smile, the world and his wife waiting to greet relatives, friends and a few brave tourists (back then neither NZ or Australia had significant community cases). The first two blokes off the plane were wearing tuxedos, that was the vibe. But this time around, I had actually caught Covid-19, on the same day as Jacinda no less. So, even though my iso-period was technically over, I thought it best not to go direct to the main concentration of travellers and tourists. Welcome to Queenstown, here’s a dose of Omicron for you. I’m not going to write some ham-fisted analogy about how my own recovery from Omicron mirrors Queenstown’s recovery from the pandemic. How for the first few days I was a little feverish and laid out flat (like Queenstown in the first year), then had an annoying sore throat that wouldn’t let me sleep (domestic tourists?), until I finally discovered hot toddies (drinking has helped us all get through this). I wouldn’t do that. However, it does feel like we are now over the worst of it and it’s about getting back on our feet, economically, socially and emotionally. There will be those who take issue with that, with daily deaths still in double figures. But, as the Ministry of Health only reports ‘with’, rather than ‘from’, it’s hard to measure how serious Omicron is. That’s no slight on the Ministry. It’s difficult to pinpoint the cause of death in every case, especially with the elderly. Perhaps it would be better to say with the transmissibility of Omicron, we are past the point where we can effectively stop the spread through lockdowns and border closures. Or, more brutally, past the point where the needs of the few outweigh the needs of the many. So, what next? Well, I’m not sure energy should be viewed a finite resource. Those who spend it freely appear to increase the amount they have to use. I know this is a National town, but look at the PM. She’s bounced back pretty quickly and (while I’ve been wallowing) has been touring the US, talking on chat shows and giving a commencement speech at Harvard University. That’s what we need to do in Queenstown, pick ourselves up, throw on a tux, a smile, grab the stilts and banners, and chase away the exhaustion with energy. Paul Taylor Queenstown Media Group

AA Defensive Driver instruction returns to Queenstown

Arts and Culture

It’s been a long haul for everyone but we’re hoping the start of Winter will be a marker for Queenstown’s tentative steps back into the light. What better way to kick things off than with a downtown weekend of light installations, projection artworks and performance. Queen’s Birthday Weekend will bring the return of LUMIFY which is a smaller pop-up event aimed at filling the gap left by LUMA’s year off. LUMA’s Chairman, Duncan Forsyth summed it up perfectly: “We’ve been beavering away in the background to come up with some ideas. We still really want to deliver for our community by supporting businesses, residents and visitors during what is a hard time for everyone.”

6 Sallies ‘supermarket’ to help struggling Queenstown families

The LUMIFY concept, was first introduced in 2020 when LUMA Queenstown was cancelled due to the first lockdown. “LUMIFY is all about community interaction and engagement and we hope locals will get behind this initiative. We want to bring a festival-like atmosphere to the town centre, but in a safe way. LUMIFY aims to entice people to come into town and support our local hospo scene which has had it tough. Stop in at the cafes, pop into the pub for a pint or grab a bite to eat before coming to see the installations.”

My Life Story

LUMIFY SCHOOLS PROGRAMME will showcase the work of our local creative students. Each year we have an ongoing series of schools projects which contribute to LUMA Gardens. This work is completed throughout the year as part of the schools curriculum and we will showcase it this year as part of LUMIFY Laneways. Works will also travel to Wanaka during Winter as part of the wider LUMA Schools Project. LUMIFY COMMUNITY Illuminate your neighbourhood. From the start of winter, 1st June onwards to the end of winter. LUMIFY Community is all about participation, fun, and grass roots. We plan to repeat our 2020 campaign aimed at encouraging supporters to bring a bit of LUMA to their neighbourhood. We encourage participation throughout the region and ask our community to LUMIFY their front yard, shop-front, bicycle, dog or business. “We hope our Queenstown community brings LUMIFY home, as they did in 2020, and light up their neighbourhood, their back-yards, their driveways, their cars. This is about grassroots contribution and we are pretty excited about what our community can do when given the challenge.”

When LUMA got pulled at the start of the year, the organisers asked some serious questions about the future and how to carry on with so much uncertainty swirling around. Its time to see those results just as its time to come back to life… This weekend is Lumify.

“We are lucky to have a wealth of talent within our LUMA community and have artists lined up to contribute. The team will be lighting up facades of buildings, projection mapping, adding festoon lighting and setting up mini pop-up events. And it doesn’t stop at lighting; several street performers and dance troops are also getting involved.’’

Forsyth says some of the creative installations will hopefully remain after the long weekend. Businesses are also being encouraged to get stuck in and support the initiative. A number are already keen and ideas include coloured mocktails, funky street food, vibrant shop windows and colourful staff outfits. Forsyth took the opportunity to thank funders.

“When we cancelled LUMA we looked at a number of options and opportunities as to how we could still do something for our community but LUMIFY is only made possible through the loyal and generous support of our funders and the local community.”

The race is on - two candidates now vying for mayoral chains by Paul Taylor

Olivia Wensley is expecting a good, clean race with Jon Mitchell to be Queenstown’s next mayor. The Startup Queenstown Lakes CEO and former lawyer, known for leading the charge against sexual harassment in the legal profession in New Zealand, announced on Thursday she’ll stand in the October elections. She’s bidding to become only the second female mayor since 1866, following on from Vanessa Van Uden, who served two terms from 2010 to 2016, before standing down. Since then, Jim Boult has been in the hot seat, but he’s not seeking a third term. That means there’ll be a fresh face wearing the chains from October. Wensley will go head-to-head with former Labour Party general election candidate Jon Mitchell, who’s the only other candidate so far, and someone she knows personally. “We’ll focus on the issues and we’ll see what the community resonates with the most,” she says. The 37-year-old married mother-of-two says she’s had overwhelming support from a wide variety of people since announcing she’ll stand. “It’s been a big 24 hours... a bit crazy really. I think there’s a sense of excitement at some fresh innovative thinking coming in, and really transforming the region to its full potential.”

their business case. “Even the biggest companies in town have had to re-evaluate, refocus, reshape. And that’s the mindset I want to bring. It’s not just an approach to business. What I really want to bring to the council is agility. “We need agility in the whole region when it comes to rebooting to build this new era and build back just brighter than ever before.” She intends to meet with Jim Boult this week to talk about the race. Boult has faced significant criticism while mayor, particularly over governance and potential expansion of council-owned Queenstown and Wanaka Airports. The council’s own most recent Quality of Life survey saw satisfaction with the council itself plummet from 34% to 25% and with elected members from 33% to 19%. But Wensley, who was nominated for New Zealander of the Year in 2019, says she won’t comment on the performance of the past council. “Because it’s been extraordinary circumstances, what we’ve gone through. I know everybody is tired of hearing this term, but it is unprecedented.

Wensley says seeking election seems like a natural progression to the work she’s been doing as chief executive of Startup Queenstown Lakes for the past two-and-a-half years. The organisation fosters the district’s ecosystem for entrepreneurship, tech and investing, part of the push towards economic diversity away from tourism.

“It’s very easy to be in the stands criticising the people that are in the arena. I’d challenge anyone who wants to see a positive change to step forward, instead of criticising.

“And I’ve been called to do it by a lot of people in the community. The call got stronger and stronger and then I just thought, okay, yeah, this is my calling.”

She also hopes the more backbiting and abusive criticism won’t discourage other people from seeking election to the council.

She accepts her role as what would be considered the pro-business candidate. “I see it as deeply understanding and valuing the business that’s here already. Someone made the comment to me that during Covid, every business in town has had to think like a start-up again, the validation process, building

“I see the solutions, not the problems, and I’m willing to roll my sleeves up and do the work to get those solutions.”

“I want them to look past the factors that may put people off. The reward from the good that will come out of it will far, far outweigh any negative aspects of the job.” Local body elections will be held on October 8, 2022 and candidate nominations officially open on Friday July 15, 2022.

TAKE THE WHEEL NEW AA DRIVING SCHOOL

By Sue Fea Fortunately Daniel Sutherland is a patient man. It’s a necessary attribute of his job. Daniel recently launched his new business, Queenstown Driving School, and is contracted by AA Driving School to ensure the Wakatipu is turning out safe drivers.

Daniel, all ready to roll with his next learner driver

Whether they’re teenagers or older drivers, Daniel says many people need practise at identifying hazards around them and that’s a big part of the full licence. Daniel Sutherland, of AA Driving School

It’s been a few years since AA Driving School has operated locally and Daniel is already enjoying some great feedback. While many parents of teenage learner drivers may be heaving a sigh of relief that they can hand over the passenger seat to Daniel, he’s also been assisting a number of overseas drivers living here to learn to drive. “There’s a real need here to help people looking to change their international driver’s licence to a New Zealand driver’s licence,” says Daniel. “It’s really satisfying to also help these people, some of whom may not be able to drive the kids to school without a supervisor driver, or in fact gain employment themselves,” says Daniel. Since arriving in Queenstown recently from Taupo with his wife, Rachel, a primary school teacher, Daniel has had plenty of international driver’s licence holders at the wheel in his AA-marked car. “There’s a big difference among international drivers in expectation, particularly in relation to mirror checks and blind spot checks,” he says. “Some international drivers aren’t aware of the importance of that.” New Zealand seems to have higher driver test standards than some overseas countries, which is a good thing, he says. Other clients are about to sit their restricted licence, or have been stuck on their restricted licence for a long time and never quite got around to sitting their full licence.

There’s big demand too for Defensive Driving Courses locally and these are a great way to learn important defensive driving skills, such as assessing and identifying hazards, says Daniel. Whether they’re on their learners or restricted licence, the driver can reduce the time it takes to get their full licence by six months when completing an NZTA-approved AA Defensive Driving Course. “On the whole 99 percent of young drivers are very perceptive and they’re really invested into passing their licence, so that they have that freedom.” Prior to moving to Queenstown Daniel had a driving school in Taupo, where he was an AA-certified driving instructor for four years, on the back of a primary school teaching career of more than 10 years. His education background has been a big help in his instructor’s role. “I use a lot of illustrations and diagrams to show people what I mean, which is something quite unique that I bring to the role and seems to work well,” he says. For Daniel it’s satisfying teaching people to learn how to drive, giving them the skills and confidence that they need. That should be the main motivation, not just to pass the test, he says. “Everyone learns at different speeds and I tailor-make my lessons to accommodate different learning abilities and styles.” “Queenstown does have its unique driving challenges, like two-lane roundabouts and some very narrow roads that become even more narrow when there are cars parked along either side of them,” he says. While new to the district, Daniel is experienced in mountainous environments and well geared up to teach in harsh Wakatipu winters. In the meantime, he and Rachel are loving the microclimate of the basin.

Support workers will help users pick what they need straight off the shelves (L to R) Hannelie Potgieter, Hine Marchand, Sandra McClennan

Sallies ‘supermarket’ to help struggling Queenstown families by Paul Taylor

The Salvation Army in Queenstown is replacing its traditional foodbank with a supermarket system.

The Salvation Army has been supporting the Queenstown Community for over 100 years.

Lt Andrew Wilson, director of The Salvation Army’s Queenstown Community Ministries, says the idea is to increase the sense of agency and dignity experienced by people struggling to get by.

“We have continually adapted our services to provide the best outcomes for those who find themselves in a vulnerable situation. We see this supermarket model as continuing our tradition of serving the community alongside our financial mentoring, counselling and other support services.

“With the rising cost of living, many households are struggling to afford the basics,” he says. “Our ‘supermarket’ model enables people who access our service the opportunity to decide for themselves what food and household items they need.” People presenting to the food service will continue to be assessed by a support worker but will be invited to pick items off the foodbank shelves which best meet their needs, rather than having someone else select items for them. “Our clients come with a range of dietary and cultural needs.

“We would like to thank the generous support of our community for helping make this initiative a reality.” If anyone wants to support the project, they can by donating the items most needed through an online platform The Foodbank Project, foodbank.org.nz. “It’s quick and easy, and the items donated locally are delivered direct to our foodbank by Countdown.” Anyone in Queenstown needing help with food, and/or financial or social support, may contact The Salvation Army Community Ministries on 03 442 9661.

“By enabling them to choose their own items, we can help ensure that everyone leaves with what they need and nothing they do not. This helps us make the best use of the food and other grocery items we hold and helps us better understand the specific grocery needs of our community.”

Where art and cuisine meet

Tests fail to pinpoint toxin by Paul Taylor

Water samples from Horne Creek near Queenstown where up to 150 trout died earlier in the month have been returned as inconclusive. Otago Regional Council staff visited the site over two days earlier this month after the dead fish were reported, taking water samples and retrieving the dead fish, including one native galaxiid.

ORC Compliance Manager Tami Sargeant says the test analysis results have just been returned from the Christchurch laboratory.

Oro Restaurant at The Carlin Boutique Hotel, 43 Hallenstein St Open seven days a week, for breakfast and dinner. Valet parking available.

“We were hoping the tests would help us establish what happened along the stream,” she says. “It’s unfortunate, the samples are inconclusive and don’t help us to narrow down any offending substance.” Sargeant says the problem may have been that the pollutant which might have caused the fish deaths may have only been in the waterway for a short time and wasn’t in the stream when the water samples were taken.

Horne Creek runs through a mix of rural and industrial land around Gorge Road, and downstream it passes through residential and commercial areas, including downtown. In urban environments, rainwater runs into gutters and is collected in stormwater pipes which can feed directly into the nearest waterway. Watercress, eels and other fish can die or become contaminated by toxins washed in via stormwater.

Sargeant encourages people to contact their local authority for advice on the appropriate disposal method. No information has yet been received from the public about the dead fish, but people can still come forward on the ORC’s Pollution Hotline on 0800 800 033.

FAST TURNAROUND PCR SALIVA TESTING FOR QUEENSTOWN by Sue Fea

With the international gates in and out of Queenstown swinging open again, this month seemed like the opportune time for Rako Science to launch its specialised COVID-19 PCR saliva testing site in Queenstown. Rako Science has been offering its quick turnaround PCR saliva testing, designed by University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign scientists, since January 2021, with Amazon Film, Air New Zealand and Auckland International Airport lining up first. Director Leon Grice says the company now has 62 active collection sites, including 16 general public sites nationwide, commercial sites, and iwi partnership sites. “We’ve been at Genesis Energy keeping the lights on since July last year and at Fisher and Paykel Healthcare testing its 3500-strong workforce regularly since then also,” says Leon. Amazon was a big client from the outset with its Lord of The Rings production and Leon says the film industry needs regular, fast-turnaround accurate testing options like his company offers. “We work with some large filming productions as they need regular accurate testing,” he says. “They just can’t allow any cast to become ill as it costs millions of dollars to a production if they have to close down.” He believes New Zealand will be very attractive as a filming option once again as the borders re-open and this country becomes preferred over Europe. Film industry or not, accurate, far less invasive PCR saliva testing for travel certificates will be very important for Queenstown as the country’s leading tourist destination, he says. “The United States requires tests to be conducted the day before you travel to fly and we typically have that result back to our customers the day they do their test,” says Leon. “We believe it’s more accurate than a nasal swab PCR test, but without that unpleasant intervention. The strength of our testing is that it picks up early infection,” he says. “RAT (Rapid Antigen Testing) tests are notoriously slow and often won’t show up until the fourth or fifth day,” says Leon. “They’re useful at confirming the infection, but not stopping the spread.” Queenstown locals across sectors, including District Mayor Jim Boult, turned out for the launch of the new 45 Camp Street facility established right in the centre of town for easy access. Prices begin at $99 for a standard test, useful for anyone planning to visit health compromised family or friends, through to pre-departure testing from $175. Rako team with Mayor Boult

“We’re really excited to support Queenstown – a place, that as it comes back, is so important for the country,” says Leon. He has two staff on site, fully-trained in infection control. “Customers can book online or walk-in and the test simply involves dribbling onto a plastic spoon which then goes into a collection tube. It’s painless and ideal for kids.” Rako Science’s testing is 100 percent saliva based and the company is already conducting 40 percent of all PCR tests carried out in New Zealand daily. “Early detection is key and the travel industry has really embraced our testing for its accuracy, speedy result and ease,” he says. “We’ve really gone out of our way to support them in return.” “Testing is likely to be needed across New Zealand until COVID-19 ceases to disrupt our lifestyles, our travel, and our business operations, and that testing needs to be sustainable,” says Leon. “That’s why it’s crucial that our testing is non-invasive, painless and as accurate as nasal tests.” ‘Rako’ is the Māori word for the Buller’s Shearwater, a seabird that flies between Aotearoa and the West Coast of North America. “We think that’s a nice metaphor for what we’re doing,” says Leon.

COMMUNITY NOTES Wakatipu High School and Volunteer South Central Lakes jump into Community Service Friday 13th May was a National Accord Day supporting NCEA at Wakatipu High School, so students had the day off. Thirty students decided to spend their afternoon volunteering in the community through a partnership between the school and Volunteer South Central Lakes. “The idea was launched in 2020 when Dunstan High School approached Volunteer South looking to support volunteer connections between the students and the community. There was a feeling that teacher only days were an ideal opportunity for students to become more integrated in their community and to make new connections with people and organisations.” says Volunteer South’s Gillian White. That idea resulted in three volunteer days at Dunstan High School and one at Mount Aspiring College in Wānaka. The first for Wakatipu High School was held earlier in May, connecting volunteers with Queenstown Trails Trust and Taramea Community Garden. 30 motivated students supported these two local organisations with many of the students from the Community and Service or Environmental Committees and everyone had the same sense of wanting to give back to their community, with some adding they want to ensure Queenstown is a good place to be in the future and that they recognise volunteering is good for their CVs. At Taramea Community Garden students cleared the beds and planted garlic, as well as designing some signs and posters for the gardens whose vision is to create a space open to all to grow and share fresh produce. Sunny Li, one of the founding members of the garden, was impressed by the students’ enthusiasm. “They contributed their creative ideas and designed signs and a poster for the garden with very limited materials which we were really impressed with. Cleaning one whole bed and planting the garlic worked very nicely with all their positive energy.” “It’s still the very beginning of our community garden, we have a clear vision of what we want to create for our community and this event has shown us that this is possible and encouraged us to keep doing what we have been doing.” Paige Cusiel, who is the lead prefect for the Environmental Committee volunteered with a group of friends and helped design a poster for Taramea Community Garden. “I haven’t done much volunteering before, but it’s been good learning about growing things locally and it feels really worthwhile and great to do something for the community.” Eoin McGlynn felt he wanted to “spend the day doing something useful and beneficial to the community… I loved the community feel, as I met and

talked to really interesting people I’d never even seen before, which is the atmosphere the founders of the garden are going for.” Over in Arrowtown, students worked with the Queenstown Trails Trust, marking out the trails and collating names of people on the trails for gathering feedback. Rachel Scobie, lead prefect for the Community and Service Committee, was one of those. “I come from a family who believe in supporting our community. We use the trails here, so it’s awesome to be able to give back to the trails trust!.” The trails trust certainly enjoyed hosting the young volunteers. “It was great to see the young adults of our community getting involved on our trails. Most of them were keen trail users already, so it was a good opportunity for the students to gain a better understanding of what goes into building and maintaining our wonderful trail network.” Whitney Wanous, from Queenstown Trails Trust said. Following the success of the day it is hoped it will become a regular initiative at Wakatipu High School. “As a school, we value Active Citizenship and it is really nice to have a group of students willing to give back to a community that supports the school and its students so well. We have really appreciated the support from Volunteer South and we look forward to building on the successful launch of the Community Service Day at WHS.” said Associate Principal Oded Nathan. Volunteer South - Central Lakes supports, promotes and strengthens volunteering creating stronger more connected communities. LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN

Death of man hit by golf ball ruled an accident A coroner has released her findings into the death of a Queenstown man, more than four years after he died after being hit by a golf ball. Jaden Goldfinch was playing golf with a group of friends at the Frankton Golf Centre on 17 February 2018. They were marking the birthday of one of the group and drinking beer as they played. On only the second hole, Goldfinch and three others hit their balls into some trees and went to look for them. As the four looked for their balls another friend noticed a yellow golf ball from the nearby driving range and hit it with the intention of driving it towards the net of the range. “I made sure that the other three mates had my attention, so they were looking at me when I went to hit the ball over them,” he told the coroner. One of the four looking for his ball in the trees said they were about 25 metres away and he “instinctively covered my head with my arms and turned away” as he thought the shot could go anywhere. Instead of going over the heads of the group, the ball was sliced towards a tree just as Goldfinch walked out from behind it. It hit the 27-year-old builder in the temple and he dropped to ground. “They all ran to Jaden who sat up and was talking. He was bleeding from a cut on the left side of his head. friend... put some ice from one of their chilly bins in Jaden’s hat and pressed it to the left side of his head where the ball had hit him. Jaden was repeatedly asking what had happened but not remembering what he was told,” coroner Sue Johnson’s report said. His partner and the friend who hit the ball helped Goldfinch to his feet. They drove him to Lakes District Hospital’s emergency department. “At first, Jaden was screaming and clutching his head. He then started to drift in and out of consciousness. [His partner] tried to keep him awake by rubbing his arms. They arrived at the hospital within five minutes and Jaden began having a seizure as he was being taken inside,” the coroner said. He arrived at the hospital at 2.38pm and, after being giving initial treatment, plans were made to transfer him to Dunedin Hospital. As he was placed into the helicopter at 5pm, his heart rate dropped to 35 beats per minute and his blood pressure rose. “His pupils were now both dilated and unreactive to bright light,” the coroner said. He arrived at Dunedin Hospital’s intensive care unit at 6pm and was immediately taken for a CT scan of his head. “This showed brain injuries, including a large acute subdural haemorrhage with formation of a haematoma (a pool of blood) which was between his brain and the dura, the brain’s outermost covering. This was due to rupture of an artery and was consistent with the impact from the golf ball. There was also a probable acute infarct (area of necrotic tissue) of part of the left frontal lobe of his brain.

“Jaden was taken straight to the operating theatre where he underwent a decompression craniectomy (trauma flap) in which a portion of skull bone is removed to ease pressure on the brain. It also allowed the brain to be accessed so that the haematoma could be removed.” He was then taken to ICU. Both pupils were dilated and unresponsive to light. Goldfinch died four days later as a result of a traumatic brain injury caused by the golf ball. No blood samples were taken as it was only after his death that the police learned the group had been drinking, so it was impossible to know if alcohol had contributed to the accident, Johnson said. Both Goldfinch and his friend who struck the ball bore some degree of responsibility for the death, though it was an accident, the coroner said. “It is clear from the evidence that [he] actually intended to hit the ball back to the driving range... but it is entirely foreseeable that the ball could have hit one of them. “It was only because of the way in which [he] sliced the ball that it did not follow the trajectory he planned. It is also entirely foreseeable that balls do not always travel straight ahead as planned; an unintended slice (as happened) can send a ball in an entirely different direction. “I therefore find that [the friend] was partly responsible for Jaden’s death by his deliberate action in hitting the ball in the direction of three people, with no regard for whether it might not go where he intended it and hit someone.” Goldfinch was risking being hit by moving ahead of the rest of the group who went looking for their balls and moving behind a tree, Johnson said. “By doing that he would not be able to see what was happening on the fairway. As I have already stated, it is entirely foreseeable that balls do not always travel straight ahead as planned. Any unintended hook or slice by a player on the fairway can send a ball toward the side of the fairway or even onto an adjacent fairway. Jaden was already risking being hit by a ball by being at the side of the fairway forward of players on it. By going behind a tree, so that he could not see what was happening on the fairway, and then suddenly coming out from behind that tree, his risk of being hit by any stray ball increased. “I therefore find that Jaden was partly instrumental in his own death and therefore contributed to it, although it was nowhere near as significant a contribution as I have found [his friend’s] to be.” The coroner did not make any recommendations and found the death was an accident. However, she did apologise for how long it took to complete the inquiry. RNZ

Last NYC public payphone removed The final New York City public pay telephone on 7th Avenue and 50th Street in Midtown Manhattan was removed last week. The city began removing payphones in 2015. Public payphones have been replaced by Wi-Fi hotspots, which will be expanded to add 5G functionality this summer. The hotspots provide access to a social services directory, device charging, free phone calls within the U.S., and transit and weather alerts. The city has removed thousands of payphones across all five boroughs in the past several years. In 2014, there were more than 6,000 active public pay telephones on city sidewalks, according to the city website. The payphones were all to be removed by 2020, but the process took longer than originally planned. Fox News

Star Wars spacecraft designer Colin Cantwell dies aged 90 Colin Cantwell, the artist who designed many of the spacecraft in the Star Wars films, has died at the age of 90. Cantwell’s first credit came on Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. Star Wars creator George Lucas then asked him to design and make prototypes for the Death Star, X-Wing, TIE fighter and Imperial Star Destroyer. Cantwell was born in Colorado in 1932 and gained a degree in animation before going on to study architecture. During the 1960s space race, Cantwell worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Nasa, helping the American public to better understand the flights. Cantwell’s interest in both architecture and space saw him prosper in Hollywood, where he worked in special photographic effects for 2001: A Space Odyssey, helping to create the film’s dramatic space opening scene. Low-Cost Gel Film Can Pluck Drinking Water from Desert Air More than a third of the world’s population lives in drylands, areas that experience significant water shortages. Scientists and engineers at The University of Texas at Austin have developed a solution that could help people in these areas access clean drinking water. The team developed a low-cost gel film made of abundant materials that can pull water from the air in even the driest climates. The materials that facilitate this reaction cost a mere $2 per kilogram, and a single kilogram can produce more than 6 liters of water per day in areas with less than 15% relative humidity and 13 liters in areas with up to 30% relative humidity. The research builds on previous breakthroughs from the team, including the ability to pull water out of the atmosphere and the application of that technology to create self-watering soil. IMPACT 100

THE END

By Sue Fea Securing adequate funding is a constant battle for local charities, even more so at present, and the very grateful recipients of the past two years of Impact100 grants have been putting that money to very good use. Living Options, which provides support for people with disabilities in the community, was the inaugural major recipient of a $100,000 grant in 2020. That money’s been channelled into converting an old Nairn Street house in Arrowtown - The Tom Pryde Centre, named after Living Options chairman of 20 years, into an accessible, warm, safe, space for those with disabilities and their families to have some muchneeded reprieve.

“It’s been the best thing,” says Living Options manager Olivia Wildey. “We were short $100,000 to complete this project after the district council offered the house at a peppercorn rental, on the provision we brought it up to community standard,” she says. “The community support has been extraordinary, and it’s extended well beyond the grant, which itself has made such a huge difference. Members of Impact100 have also supported us in other ways.” Living Options first began in Alexandra in 2001 where it was founded by Olivia’s mother Alison Wildey after she saw a huge gap for people with disabilities in the area. The support is individualised, teaching skills for independence so people can have as much control of their lives as possible, have fun and a full life, says Olivia. “This is all happening in the Wakatipu now, thanks to the Impact 100 grant,” says Olivia. Living Options has seven houses in Alexandra that provide overnight support, as well as a spacious activity centre with an extensive garden. John Halliday, one of the stars of the new television series, ‘Down For Love’, is the ultimate ambassador for Living Options - a foundation member. “John’s achieved incredible accolades with the support of Living Options, from snowboarding in Idaho at the Special Olympics to starring in Jane Campion’s ‘Power of the Dog’ movie,” says Olivia. He also works at Living Options as Alison’s PA. Last year’s major grant winner Pivotal Point Charitable Trust is a new local charity which is working hard to identify and support those with neurodiversity. “This money has been hugely helpful and we’ve been able to proceed with our three-year programme to offer screening

in all local schools and professional learning development programmes for teachers,” says founder and chief executive Lisa Leftley. One in five people are neurodivergent and it’s vital that this is identified early in a child’s life as intervention and support can make an enormous difference, she says. Neurodiversity includes everything from dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia to autism and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).

John Halliday and Amos Van Asch - playing music

“We’ve been able to employ a support coordinator, screening co-ordinator, and coordinator of professional Louise Wright - playing the key board development for schools,” says Lisa. “Our navigation service helps help in tackling this problem,” he says. The families and health professionals to navigate trapping work just got underway recently with pathways so they can identify where the relevant the relevant electronic equipment, ordered from local services are.” There’s a major push to bring China in December, only arriving in New Zealand about more awareness of neurodiversity and in March. All going well in the Greenstone Valley, break down traditional stereotypes. “Many of the takahe may also be introduced back into the these people are extremely intelligent and have Rees Valley within a few years. an amazing superpower within them,” she says. Last week (May 25) Impact100 announced this “It’s just a matter of identifying their different year’s large, generously donated funding pool of learning styles early on and teaching accordingly.” $168,000, which will be divvied out to deserving Lisa says the major Impact100 grant has not only charities come October. Expressions of interest given Pivotal Point a massive financial boost to close on June 8 and full applications close on get its foundation programmes underway, but the July 20, with the top five applications selected publicity has really helped raise the profile and announced on September 21. community awareness of neurodiversity. “That in See: https://www.impact100wakatipu.org/ for turn has gained us even more public support, and details. therefore funding, so that we can implement the rest of our strategy,” she says. “We really want to change mindsets and this early intervention is incredibly important for a child’s self-esteem during their school years.” Pivotal Point is hoping to use its work in the Wakatipu Basin as a data point for efficacy studies so that the strategies can be replicated throughout the country. It’s not only humans being given a hand up by Impact100 with Routeburn Dart Wildlife Trust’s 2021 grant enabling much-needed investment into trapping feral cats taking over at the head of Lake Wakatipu. “Feral cats are major predators at the head of the lake and are hugely detrimental to our native bird populations,” says trust executive officer Geoff Hughes. “Traditionally our focus has been on stoats, possums and weasels, but feral cats are of increasing significance” says Geoff. The Department of Conservation has been working hard on its successful takahe breeding programme with plans for a release into the Greenstone Valley in autumn next year. “It’s vital we get these feral cat populations under control and the money from Impact100 has been a huge

Otago cycle trail network confident it will overcome consent hurdles “It’s good tourism isn’t it? It’s sustainable, except for the construction phase, it’s sustainable tourism, so it’s good for everyone and it’s good for everyone’s health to get out there and ride bikes.” Eventually the links would bring together the Queenstown, Clutha Gold, Roxburgh Gorge, Lake Dunstan and Otago Central Rail trails. There were also plans to see the network eventually connect to North Otago’s Alps 2 Ocean, he said. So does cycling represent Otago’s next gold rush? Tourism Central Otago general manager Dylan Rushbrook said he believed so. “It’s absolutely a gold rush for this region. You only need to look around and almost second car over a weekend has bikes on the back.” Riders on the Lake Dunstan Cycle track. Photo: Facebook / Lake Dunstan Cycle & Walking Trail

It’s hoped work on the next connections between Otago’s cycle trails will begin this year. When completed a continuous 600 kilometre network of trails will link Queenstown to Dunedin. Consents have been lodged for the next steps to connect the area’s great rides and expand them further.

The combination of Otago’s unique landscapes and heritage as well as the unique nature of cycling tourism complimented each other perfectly, he said. “The beauty of cycling is the type of tourism it is - it’s like a slow style. So people come in and they take their time, they might get out and do a trail in the morning and... then in the afternoon it’s time to relax, take in a winery, take in a café, read a book or go out and explore some of the heritage around the region or the arts scene around the region. “So it’s a really nice way that we see people coming in and slowing down and just experiencing the region.” Businesses were excited by the boom.

Otago already boasts more than a quarter of the country’s 23 Great Rides, but what was planned next might be the most ambitious aim so far.

Mt Rosa Wines owner Guy Boanas said the benefits of cycling tourism had been obvious over the pandemic.

“We always had a view of making this a destination to come and ride,” Central Otago Queenstown Trail Network Trust chair Stephen Jeffery said.

“Domestic tourism has been reasonably kind to us,” he said.

“That meant we had to link all the trails together - the Queenstown Trails, out of Wānaka, linking with the Rail Trail, and all the way through to Dunedin Airport was the original goal... and we’re well on track to do that.” Planning was well advanced for connecting Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago’s Great Rides, he said. Work had started on the link from Lawrence to Waihola, with plans for it to be finished next year. Resource consent applications to link Cromwell to Queenstown and Wānaka, and to connect the two sections of the Roxburgh Gorge Trail were also already submitted, Jeffery said. It had not all been straight forward though with a road block already cropping up with the Bannockburn to Gibbston Valley connection.

“I know there’s a lot of people in town in hotels and restaurants who haven’t had that experience but... we seem to still have people coming through and certainly a lot of those people are on bikes.” His winery sat right at the end of the Gibbston River Wine Trail, about 30 kilometres from downtown Queenstown. Boanas said at first he was sceptical, but he was surprised by the number of people willing to hop on a bike and hit the wineries. “I did scratch my head a little bit and wonder how it was going to go, but it’s been a revelation. We’ve got great trails all the way back into Queenstown and Arrowtown from here and people taking advantage of them, and we can’t way to see the extension all the way through to Cromwell and Clyde it’s going to be fantastic.” - RNZ

An objection had been lodged to the consent, which meant it could head to the Environment Court. But Jeffery said he was confident they could clear those hurdles, considering the potential benefit to the wider region of tourists being able to hop off a plane at Dunedin Airport and cycle all the way to Queenstown, or vice-versa.

Arts+Culture Make way for Matariki by Bethany Rogers

Arrowtown’s the place to be for Matariki this year. The inaugural Matariki Arrowtown Lights event will take place from 24–26 June 2022. The new long weekend is the first time Aotearoa has celebrated Matariki as an official public holiday. Over the weekend, Arrowtown (known by tāngata whenua as Kā Muriwai) will light up with creative and educational events. There’ll be storytelling, stunning light displays, kapa haka performances and a chance to learn more about the stars. Working closely with local iwi, the new event builds on celebrations held for several years by the Arrowtown Preschool. Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association Manager Nicky Busst says plans for a bigger event have been secretly underway for almost a year. “For us, the Matariki Arrowtown Lights was a way of extending on something that’s been quite an important event in the winter calendar for Arrowtown for over a decade with the preschool Kapa Haka event.” “We wanted to create a midwinter event that was celebrating Māori heritage and building on what the Matariki event has always been, with its focus on the Kapa Haka.” The team have worked closely with Darren Rewi and Cory Ratahi to provide the educational side of the event, including going into schools to talk to young people about what Matariki is and means. As part of the festival, young people from Years 7 and 8 at Arrowtown Primary School have put together an art exhibition, which will be hosted by the Lakes District Museum. Others have worked with SILO (of LUMA renown) to create films and light projections to be displayed on the buildings around Arrowtown. The weekend’s events will still centre around the Kapa Haka performances,

where schools across the district come together to perform on Buckingham Green. “We’re really supporting the schools, the community and our arts sector to make sure they’re a big part of this process. […] Without giving too much away, there’ll be be some beautiful light projections and lots of really exciting things going on.” “[…] We’re also really excited to announce that Dorothy Browns cinema has come on board; they’ll be hosting a film festival featuring Māori films with new releases and some old favourites too.” Live music in Arrowtown’s restaurants will bring the festival atmosphere together and pre-eminent astrophysicist Brian Boyle will appear on Friday to share the wonders of the Otago night skies. “Our local community has embraced Matariki and supports the new public holiday. We saw this as an opportunity to bring together the area’s wider creative talents and explore the cultural significance of Matariki as a unique New Zealand holiday, in a way that not only brings our community together but attracts visitors to the region too,” says Nicky. Queenstown targets North American travellers by Paul Taylor

American and Canadian accents could soon be heard much more frequently on Queenstown’s streets. The tourist town is aiming to become a must-do destination for North Americans travelling to New Zealand. Destination Queenstown has announced it is working with Auckland Airport and Tātaki Auckland Unlimited to target the US and Canadian tourism, business and incentive market. Auckland is the most connected city in Australasia to North America, with 60 direct flights per week to seven cities, once the New York service begins in September. And Queenstown is arguably the most popular visitor destination in NZ, with a strong connection to Auckland with 50 flights per week. The plan is to create itineraries that will focus on must-dos in both regions: food, golf, luxury, outdoors, arts and culture, low-carbon experiences, and a specific incentives itinerary. The three organisations will then work together on joint sales calls and in-market representation, road shows, media and travel agent visits and promotion through owned channels. “We are delighted to be working together to provide a strong Aotearoa New Zealand proposition for the North American market,” says Destination Queenstown chair Richard Thomas. “A core focus for us as international travellers return is to encourage slower, more immersive travel for those who come to our shores. This partnership aims to invite travellers to visit two complementary New Zealand destinations – Queenstown, with its majestic landscapes and world-class experiences, and Auckland, with its bustling, cultural vibrancy within the Hauraki Gulf.” In 2019, almost half (46 per cent) of all visitor spend from the USA was spent in Auckland and Queenstown.

Nick Hill, Tātaki Auckland Unlimited Chief Executive, says the aim is for the Auckland-Queenstown experience to become the foundation of a NZ itinerary for US travellers. Over time, that will encourage “more North American visitors to come to Aotearoa and spend more time and money in our communities,” he says. Scott Tasker, Auckland Airport General Manager Aeronautical Commercial, says the airport expects arrivals from the USA alone to overtake China as the second biggest tourism market this year, and hold that position until 2026. “Even pre-COVID, North America was already a really important – and growing – market for arrivals into Auckland Airport. In fact, more than 80 per cent of North American visitors to New Zealand touched down in Auckland,” Tasker says.

That year, nearly half a million people from the US and Canada visited the country (367,958 from USA, 73,037 from Canada).

“As aviation recovers, we’re seeing a real eagerness from airlines to re-start those connections and in some cases, like Air New Zealand, develop new routes. It not only provides a great choice of airlines for visitors to Aotearoa New Zealand, but will also drive the tourism recovery.”

Five airlines offer scheduled services between Auckland and the US, flying direct to Los Angeles LAX, San Francisco SFO, Houston IAH, Chicago ORD, New York JFK, Honolulu HNL, and Vancouver YVR.

Hill says the USA is also a significant market for trade and investment, the second-largest source of foreign direct investment into New Zealand and Auckland, behind Australia.

BEN BATTERBURY TOP OF THE GAME

There was nothing in highly-acclaimed and awardwinning chef Ben Batterbury’s childhood or genes to suggest a strong culinary influence. While he always liked food, two years at catering school just seemed a whole lot more appealing that six more studying architecture. Born in Bristol in 1978, Ben’s dad investigated telephone fraud for British Telecom and his mum was a bookkeeper. “I can still remember Dad got a car phone when they were brand new. It was a phone on a wire plugged into the car with a big portable battery in the boot, the size of a laptop,” laughs Ben. “One of my fondest memories growing up is enjoying my Nan’s cooking. She and Mum were good home cooks,” he says. “We always had Sunday lunch or dinner at Nan’s and it was completely over the top. My favourites were Nan’s tapioca pudding – we’d fight over the skin, and Nan`s apple pie.”

Ben creating yet another masterpiece

Apart from that, and Ben’s legendary late ‘master baker’ grandfather who’d passed before he was born, cooking was something he just fell into. An only child, the family would holiday in France several times every summer, dining out in French restaurants. Not surprisingly, Ben chose home economics as a main subject at high school. “It was hilarious. There were a few boys in our class of 20 girls. The girls turned up with their little hamper baskets to carry their cakes and muffins home and us boys brought Tupperware containers,” laughs Ben.

at college the teacher looked at my grades and said, ‘Are you sure you’re in the right class? You should be in the management class.’ Cooking wasn’t perceived as a good career option then.” He was soon called into the kitchen at his parttime student restaurant job. The hours were long, but Ben doesn’t shy away from hard work. At 16 his college secured him summer work in Torquay. “Having a part-time job through college meant you were streets ahead of the class as you’re working every day under pressure, not learning from 1970s cookbooks,” says Ben. “The only time I was ever asked for my qualifications was for immigration to New Zealand.” An experienced executive chef now, Ben would rather see how an applicant performs and interacts practically in a busy kitchen team. He began his own career honing his craft in highend English country estate lodges. “My first boss at Homewood Park was a really famous chef. It was super intense. I saw fights, people coming to fisty cuffs. It was crazy.” There were many lighthearted moments too, like the time the sous chef headed off with the newspaper for his half hour daily morning poo. A cheeky pastry chef lit alcohol in a pan and shoved it under the toilet door. “Not the smartest, but funny,” recalls Ben. One night Ben made the French meringue mixture for the next day only to discover it was off the menu. “One guy threw a bit of it and then we all started. It was literally all over the kitchen walls. It was 11pm and we then had to start deep cleaning the kitchen.” Throughout a decorated career of five-star English country lodges Ben was awarded the prestigious 3AA rosettes, putting him in the top ten percent by his mid to late 20s. There was also a two-year stint at a classy Madeira lodge estate in Portugal. Among the notable properties were Charlton House, owned by the Mulberry family of fashion label fame, Oxford’s Studley Priory, and his first head chef role at Scotland’s Cameron House in 2007. “The first menu I prepared there I asked a supplier for venison and they sent me frozen venison from New Zealand, when Scotland

has tons of venison.” He questioned that and here began what’s been Ben’s trademark ‘source locally’ catch cry throughout his career – an idea now embraced worldwide. It was in Scotland that Ben met Rees Hotel general manager Mark Rose, who later convinced him to come to New Zealand and open The Rees as executive chef in 2009. “It was very different and the salaries were less here. I had to start from scratch discovering good artisan producers locally and finding staff. It was a real challenge and a learning curve.” He spent 10 years there during which time the accolades kept coming with international awards and high honours, including an invitation to cook for an elite crowd of American guests at a New Zealand lunch and dinner hosted at the prestigious James Beard House in New York in 2011. “That was one of the best things I’ve ever done – a real highlight and honour.” Kiwi chefs, including Matt Lambert’s crew and Monique Fiso, helped, and together they showcased the best of New Zealand cuisine. For Ben cooking isn’t a job, but a passion. His creativity and immaculate presentation is widely renowned, as are his culinary innovations. “I’ve always loved the creative sense of achievement, being able to produce something I’ve created.” After 10 years at The Rees, just prior to Covid times, Ben launched his own private chef business, Munch Catering.

Restaurant work experience further piqued his interest. “Food was definitely there. We always celebrated a meal and I loved eating properly.” He enjoyed technical drawing and design so thought he’d pursue architecture. “But that was another six to eight years of school and I couldn’t be arsed,” he says. So it was off to Catering School to gain his NVQ (National Vocational Qualification). “My first day

Ben Batterbury

It’s been a fun, challenging move, offering bespoke menus for various private dinner parties and events from degustation to casual finger food. Despite the lack of tourists he’s grateful for a wonderful local following. Presentation is key. Immaculate macarons (top) and beautifully presented beef (bottom)

“I just needed a change. Kitchens are intense and you get a bit over them. I’m really enjoying this.”

Get Ready for the Snow Skiing/snowboarding are technical sports, placing high demands on one’s skillset due to the extremely high variability of conditions encountered. Variations in terrain, snow conditions, speed, and visibility all require you to constantly adapt technique and tactics effectively. This has important implications for how winter sports people should train for the upcoming season due to the variable nature of conditions. Snow sports require a range of physical capacities, including strength, endurance, balance, coordination, and neuromuscular control. Six common injuries sustained while skiing: • Knee injuries are common. Women are 3-6 x more likely to tear their ACL compared to males. • Skiers’ trio: ACL and MCL rupture + tibial plateau fracture. • Tibia + fibula fractures (boot top fractures). • Skier’s thumb. • Partial or complete tearing of rotator cuff tendons. • Dislocated shoulder.

Health and Wellness Aimee Liddington is the founder of FORM Pilates Studio FORM Pilates Studio is Queenstown’s only reformer Pilates studio where the instructors are all senior physiotherapists and exercise rehabilitation specialists. www.formpilates.co.nz

Six common injuries sustained while snowboarding:

3. Neuromuscular control + motor control exercises.

• Wrist injuries are extremely common (particularly in beginner snowboarders). • FOOSH (fall on outstretch hand) leading to fracture of wrist hand. • Elbow dislocations. • Shoulder dislocations and RC strains/tears. • Patella dislocation • Head injuries are also more common.

• For example; jumping from side to side. Jumping up and down. Sudden start/stop movements. Rapid change of direction movements. • Agility, balance, plyometric, power, stability, and strength training combined.

Now is the time to start your prehab program for the winter season. A good program should include: 1. Strengthening exercises • Low limb strength (quadriceps, hamstrings, hip abductors and extensors). • Weight bearing upper limb activities (plank/press ups on hands etc) • Rotator cuff strength – strength into unstable positions (away from body). • Deep neck flexor strength. • Abdominal strength. Improved strength and stability through the mid-section reduced incidence of low limb injuries. 2. Balance exercises

Due to the nature of reformer Pilates movements, there is a high degree of neuromuscular control involved. If you compare the likes of a seated knee extension at the gym compared to a moving unstable lunge up on the reformer – you can imagine the level of motor control and coordination required is much higher. If you would like to improve your strength, co-ordination, balance, flexibility and neuromuscular control we would love to work with you. FORM Pilates Studio is Queenstown’s only reformer Pilates studio where the instructors are all senior physiotherapists and exercise rehabilitation specialists. We provide small group classes and private sessions tailored exactly to your body’s personal requirements and goals. QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY WEEKEND Hello Queenstown, it’s time to shine When LUMA got pulled at the start of the year, we had to ask some serious questions about the future and how to carry on with so much uncertainty swirling around us like a giant germ-filled whirlwind. We decided this was also an opportunity. A chance to test out some ideas we’ve been working on over the last seven years. It’s time to test our reputation for welcoming all comers and delivering the magic. To find out if we’ve still got what it takes to be at the top of our game and deliver on all those promises we made over the last two years that started with the words ’When things get back to normal…” It’s time to come back to life and stake a claim on our culture. It’s time for LUMIFY. Enjoy, The Luma Team

LUMIFY is a pop-up project bringing a touch of light and performance to our laneways, our neighbourhood and the ‘in-between’ spaces of Queenstown. Join the celebration of winter this weekend with a collection of activations, illuminated art and performance in town and on your doorstep. It’s free and open to all.

It concentrates on elevating the profile of some of our back alleyways and side streets through illumination, sound and performance.
