Bricks and Mortar
I’ve said it a thousand times, The Queenstown Art Society hides in plain sight in Queenstown - we’ve been here for 60 years and counting - and we aren’t going anywhere. By any metric you use we are local as - we pre-date Ferg and Bungy - we’re part of the furniture. For the last half of our history we made the Ballarat Street Art Centre our home. Before us it was the old high school. There’s still a few people around that served detention there, they were probably born in Bungy Backpackers, but like the long since recycled Bottle House - things around here don’t stay the same forever. On the 20th of May, we close the doors to the Arts Centre one last time. QLDC who owns the building has their eye on the corner to eventually become an arts and culture precinct, and hopefully that eventually doesn’t need to be written in italics. So if they want the land, what’s going to happen to the building? That decision ultimately sits with the Council and the community. There is hope that this building can be moved to a new spot and remain a place for the creative arts. We’d love to see that happen - the more places for creativity in our town the better! So what happens to us, right now? Well we return to our roots - when the Art Society started we were the mortar between the bricks in this town and that’s just what we will continue to do. We’ll be popping up exhibitions in usual and unusual spaces. We’ll be teaching classes, running workshops and doing our best to help grow arts and culture in the town we all love. You can find us at Te Atamira - this breathtaking new facility is a vessel waiting to be filled with community and that’s what we’ve always done, so it’s only natural we continue that good work here. In fact the first show (which is on NOW) is all about this journey: Past, Present & Future: 60 Years of the Queenstown Art Society. Come and have a look, reminisce and more importantly look towards the future. A future that could include YOU - we’re always welcoming new members. This isn’t the end - this is the end of the beginning. The Queenstown Art Society is just getting warmed up. If the last few years have taught us anything: for our own mental health - the arts whether created or consumed are vital. The arts shouldn’t be extra - they should be expected. The arts aren’t the nice to haves - they are the mortar that holds the bricks of a community together. So what should you expect to happen next? One heck of a creative adventure - Who’s coming with us!?! Scott Kennedy Community Arts Coordinator for the Queenstown Art Society

Op-Ed – What’s in store for us in Budget 2022? Joseph Mooney MP for Southland
On Budget Day, 19 May, we’ll hear what Labour plans to do with around $6 billion a year in new operating spending, plus a few billion more in capital. This is when we will hear how the Government plans to use our hard-earned taxes to ensure our country gets back to prosperity. Inflation is the highest in 30 years, and we are facing the worst cost of living crisis in a generation. This Labour Government’s economic approach has been for increased government spending instead of pursuing a robust economic agenda that will lift wages, grow jobs, and create choices for families to prosper. If we are to see any improvement in people’s lives, the Government must restore fiscal discipline in the upcoming Budget. We cannot go on spending as if there is no tomorrow. The Government will need to reign in their spending and refocus its use of taxpayer monies on outcomes for Kiwis. We have seen example after example of wasteful spending with a lack of delivery any a little focus on results. Billions are allocated to mental health, but with few outcomes for specialist services. $800,000 was spent on job expos that only 126 people attended. Billions on Kiwibuild that has only seen 1300 homes built. Immigration New Zealand has employed 500 more staff and the department’s expenditure has gone up 50% since 2017. Yet, they are processing two-thirds less visa applications, and taking much longer to do it. The wasteful spending list goes on and on.
National will be assessing the upcoming Budget according to whether it can achieve three key priorities. Will it deliver meaningful relief for middleincome earners who don’t receive government benefits? Will it be value of money, and will it meet the tests of accountability and delivery? While Kiwis are counting every dollar, we should be expecting the Government to do the same. To get ahead, we need to relentlessly target our spending on the significant drivers of our economic engine – education and skills, infrastructure, technology, the business environment, and our connections with the world, all while protecting our environment. We need a Budget that will encourage innovation and entrepreneurship so that the world wants to invest in our country and buy our products. On 19 May, Kiwis don’t have to hear more excuses about the Government needing more time, that the cost of living crisis is COVID’s fault. What you want to know, what I want to know, is what is the Government going to do to fix it. I am hosting Post Budget updates in Queenstown on 23 May, and in Gore on 24 May. It will be an opportunity to unpack the Government’s Budget announcements and see what’s in it for you, your family, your business and your employees. Anyone interested in attending can register to participate at www. josephmooney.national.org.nz/events.

Lakeview on the fast-track by Paul Taylor
Queenstown’s billion-dollar Lakeview / Taumata development could have its first resource consent within 60 days. The trans-Tasman consortium behind the Man Street project has lodged its application for stage one with the Government’s fast-track expert consenting panel. Ninety Four Feet, Centuria Capital and Britomart Hospitality Group plan to build 500 apartments, three hotels, shops, restaurants, bars and offices on the 10-hectare elevated site. It will take 10 to 15 years to complete, in six stages. Ninety Four Feet’s New Zealand general manager Paul Burnaby was in town on Thursday to give an update on the project. He said the goal is to complement downtown Queenstown, which is a sevenminute walk away, by creating “a really vibrant place”, with accommodation and businesses, ranging from premium to fun, located on busy pedestrianfriendly streets, surrounded by public parks. He confirmed stage one will be 224 residential units across five buildings, featuring a public terrace across the fifth floors, with restaurants, bars, coworking spaces, a gym, a spa and the likes. Joining him for the update at QT Hotel on Thursday was Mark Francis, managing director of Centuria NZ. Francis founded Augusta Group, which was the original financial partner on the project, before it merged into the bigger Aussie firm last year. He said the consortium is a well-resourced, proud group of people, and everyone’s involvement is “not just about the dollars”. “Obviously, we’re here for a financial outcome for sure, we’re business people,” Francis said. “But, beyond that, we really wanted to create a legacy asset that we can all stand back one day and say to our kids, ‘we were involved in that’.” The developers could “certainly make more money by choosing cheaper materials”, he said, but “that’s not what this team of people is about at all.” Instead, it will be one of the world’s most sophisticated mass timber projects, says Dean Mackenzie, partner at architects Monk Mackenzie. Production of concrete and steel account for 8% of global carbon emissions, so timber is a more sustainable building material. “We’re going to have to adopt these strategies in terms of architecture and construction as we move forward,” Mackenzie says. “And this project, with the scale that it is, using mass timber is really bold.” The base of the buildings will be clad in schist, providing a “sense of place, gravitas and permanence”. Construction firm Naylor Love has been tasked with making the vision a reality. Chief executive Rick Herd said it will provide continuity for Naylor Love’s 140 Queenstown employees, allowing them to build careers with the company without needing to relocate.
Formerly a ramshackle holiday park, with long-stay cabins and disused buildings, the Queenstown Lakes District Council-owned Lakeview land became town-centre zoned through the Plan Change 50 process. It has been a hugely controversial site, however, firstly as QLDC evicted lowincome workers from the cabins and then due to the deal struck with the consortium and how it is governed. QLDC agreed to pay for the infrastructure works, which are due to be completed next year, but costs have spiralled from about $15m to more than $55m, partially due to asbestos contamination. Decision-making was delegated to QLDC chief executive Mike Theelen, rather than to councillors. In March, councillors voted for a review of the arrangement and former Assistant Auditor-General Bruce Roberston will report back to full council on 30 June. Councillor Niki Gladding says it’s not too late for councillors to have a greater say in the future stages of the development. “We’ve got a masterplan for the whole area, but as they develop the design for the individual super lots, and want to make changes, it is important that comes back to council, so councillors can ensure the project’s objectives are being met. “We didn’t go ahead and spend all that infrastructure money and take on the debt for no reason at all. We wanted to have control of those objectives. “And at the end of the day, we have to answer the question ‘was this the best use of ratepayers’ money?” The review could also create a governance framework for future councilcommercial partnerships, such as the Project Manawa site on the Ballarat / Stanley St block. QLDC will eventually gain $77m from the deal as well as a share of the profits from the development, which is forecast to provide a $100m annual GDP boost for the region. Stage one is now being considered for approval under Fast Track Consenting Act 2020 (FTCA) by the expert panel, rather than the council’s resource consent process. If approved, construction could begin next year.

PADDY STRAIN
Japanese boat from Bluff and he gradually made his way back to Austria.”
A SKIING LEGEND
Paddy and her late husband, John, later visited Otto, who went on to own a successful hotel in Austria and work for the United Nations and Indian government helping set up a ski resort in Kashmir.
She may have just turned 86 last week (May 13), but age has never been a barrier to Wakatipu skiing legend Paddy Strain, who’s still planning to get up the mountain as always this winter. “I still go up for a couple of runs, but last year I only did two days,” says Paddy. “You’d hardly call it skiing. I have a bit of trouble with the altitude up there now so I spend more time having coffee and talking.” She only skis First Tracks from 8am these days as she feels safer then. The fourth of five children raised in Invercargill, Paddy’s father owned a sports store in the city with his brother and both of her parents were keen skiers. Born in 1936, three years before World War II broke out, Paddy’s earliest memory was going to the Greenslade’s property on the foothills of Mount Dewar, near Arrowtown. “I was about four and we went skiing with the Royds family. All the kids were in the trailer with the skis,” she says. Her father’s car got stuck in thick snow on the hill just past the McChesney Bridge at Arthur’s Point. “There wasn’t another car in sight so we all had to walk in to Queenstown.” Paddy was 10 in 1946 – the end of the war - when she really got into skiing. Sir Henry Wigley, who owned Mt Cook Company, started a skifield at the Skippers Saddle on Coronet Peak. “The bus came that far from Queenstown and there was a ski rental and toilet,” says Paddy. “He employed an Austrian ski instructor, Otto Santner, to give lessons.” The more capable skiers used skins to climb to the top of Coronet Peak and ski down at the end of the day. For the others it was herringbone or side stepping before skiing down. Coronet Peak celebrates the 75th anniversary of its first rope tow in August this year with five days of special events, including a large, free night skiing party, and a gala night. Paddy recalls when war broke out the local policeman was supposed to arrest Otto because he was Austrian. “Instead, he took a bottle of whisky to Eichardt’s, where Otto was living, and after drinking the whisky told him to get out of New Zealand as quickly as he could. Southland Ski Club members helped him escape on a
During Paddy’s school years the family also skied at the old Garston skifield on the southern end of the Hector Mountains along the Nevis Road. It was a two-hour hike to the hut. After Paddy’s parents parted her mum brought the children to winter over one year in a cottage where the Red Rock now stands in Queenstown, the outskirts of town back then. “I absolutely loved it,” she says. “We’d return to school in Invercargill with such tanned faces and white limbs that the kids down there wouldn’t believe us as to why,” she grins. Leaving school at 15, Paddy had two secretarial jobs, but her heart and weekends were always in Queenstown skiing, staying at the Southland Ski Club hut. “My father allowed me to go away for weekend adventures, as long as I was skiing, tramping or climbing.” The piano in the Wakatipu Ski Club hut got a hammering every Saturday night as they all partied and sang. “We sang songs and years later I found out what they meant,” laughs Paddy. One night her sister went flying off the dancefloor and through the Pinex wall. “Her bum was stuck in the wall and we had to pull her out. There was a hole there for a very long time.” Paddy has ski raced most of her life, winning the South Island Championships several times – the first title for downhill at just 15 years old, and winning the downhill and the slalom at 18. She was one of New Zealand’s best ski racers during the 1950s. It was during these years that Paddy met John – a young skier and farmer from Lake Hayes who liked to stay up at the huts to join in the weekend action. They married in 1956 when Paddy was 19, and had three sons. She quickly learned how to be a farmer and feeder, not only of stock but hungry men. Sport played a huge part in her life with the boys enjoying skiing, car rallying and trail bike riding. Son Sam was into jetboat racing, and granddaughter Kate represented NZ in the Ice Ferns. Once her kids grew Paddy got back into ski racing – the local Winter Classic and NZ Masters events. She contributed greatly to QAST – Queenstown Alpine Ski Team, as secretary, gatekeeper, coffee runner, fundraiser, administrator and patron, for many years. She’s won the NZ Masters Ski Racing competition, taking out the overall first place nationally, and normally every year won her national age group while competing, which she did for 20 or 30 years. Paddy finally hung up her racing bib at age 76.

Sadly, John had passed away at 50, leaving Paddy a widow from 43 with her older sons, 20 and 22,

and a seven-year-old. Son Tony took over the family’s Lake Hayes farm at 22 and Paddy went to work at Alpine Helicopters for a while. Around this time Paddy trained and sat her fixed wing pilot’s licence under the watchful instructions of Bruce Kerr and Jim Jeffery. She flew recreationally for about four years. She and John had enjoyed golf together, but the Women’s Division of Federation Farmers didn’t really appeal. “I should’ve joined as then I’d know how to darn socks,” she grins. Besides there was more sport to be had and Paddy’s never been one to turn down an opportunity, especially a sporting one. With absolutely no knowledge of sailing, she was asked to fill in as skipper on a local ladies’ yacht for a race. She went on to later win the Southland Sailing Championships and was minutely close to taking out the local Donald Hay Yacht Race with Nigel Brown crewing for her. “When my partner, Bill van der Voorden, sold his business he was free to sail with me and we had many years of racing and cruising holidays before he died,” she says. Paddy sailed competitively for 30 years until the age of 79 and only sold her yacht recently, aged 80. Typically though, Paddy’s quick to point out that Queenstown local Bridget Mee’s father in Canterbury is still NZ Masters ski racing in his 90s. “I still feel as though I haven’t done that much,” she says.

‘Burnout is a real thing down here’: Locals pitch in to keep Queenstown businesses open “I’m not too proud to clean toilets or do some housekeeping. I think it’s just whatever is available. “I’m quite happy to do a variety of different jobs, help in the kitchen, whether that’s doing dishes or prepping food or front of house.” Future Hospitality Group operates several businesses in the resort town. Its co-director Bert Haines said staff were very thin on the ground. They have adapted opening hours and days to ensure they could cope. “We’ve been fortunate enough to tap on the shoulders of some of our former employees that have worked for us, and they’ve come in and done ‘cameo shifts’ just to help us get through some of the weekends. “We’ve sort of got that lined up even a bit in May and into June as we’re trying to staff up for the winter.” The initiative was already making a difference, he said. “It’s been a great initiative. It’s been awesome to see uptake in it.

Queenstown locals are putting up their hands - and picking up dish cloths - to help as businesses brace for a busy winter with staff thin on the ground. Over the Easter and Anzac long weekends, many Queenstown hotels and restaurants capped their reservations because they didn’t have enough staff and to avoid burning out the ones they do have. That was where the Locals Keeping Queenstown Open initiative hoped to ease the pressure by connecting willing people with some spare hours to businesses. When Mel Haarer first saw the call for Queenstown locals to pitch in on Facebook last Friday, she was thousands of kilometres away, waiting at Heathrow Airport for her flight home.
“I’ve spoken with other operators that have actually leant into it and no surprises a few of the faces that have jumped out. Other small business owners that have jumped in to help and musos, just fantastic local people who have answered that call.” They’ve got 32 staff in total, but Haines said they needed nearly double that for winter so they could open each business back up to seven days. A few former staff were returning for the winter, but he wasn’t ruling out seeking a helping hand from locals. “If we do get to that stage where it’s the difference of being able to open a venue for the night, 100 percent I’d jump on and use that initiative.” The Locals Keeping Queenstown Open Facebook page was launched earlier this month. Page co-founder and Xtravel co-owner Tori Keating said they’ve had a huge uptake in messages already.
She’s the founder of Connect and Care, and was looking for some temporary work before business picked up.
“It’s not creating new jobs or new employment. It’s just creating a bridge to get us through the winter season while we’re still waiting for people to come back into town.”
“I just thought I’ll put my hand forward to work some shifts or hours that suit me as a single parent in between school. Just whatever’s available in what I can do, then I can help the businesses hopefully and vice versa.”
With eager skiers and snowboarders expected to arrive in their droves, Queenstown businesses were hopeful more workers weren’t far away.
Now that her jetlag was easing, she was hoping to pitch in for her community, and for struggling businesses and staff.

“Burnout is a real thing down here and I think anything that we can do to prevent further burnout and reduce stress is a good thing.” With a background in tourism management and a few hospitality and service jobs under her belt, she didn’t mind how she helped out.
Winter warning over Covid-19 and flu by Paul Taylor
Health officials are warning Queenstown and the Southern region can expect the double whammy of Covid and flu over winter. Southern District Health Board Covid-19 Response Lead Dr Hywel Lloyd says the region has entered the ‘long tail’ of Covid, with infections expected to continue to the widespread for the foreseeable future. And flu infections are also making a return, after a few years of absence due to Covid-19 protection measures. “As a community we need to accept that Covid-19 is with us for now, and make choices accordingly,” Dr Lloyd says. “We need to all assume that when we are out in the community there is a very real risk that we will come in contact with the COVID-19 virus.” Dr Lloyd says this can cause anxiety for many people, especially those who are vulnerable to severe Covid-19 symptoms. “The best way we can all protect ourselves and others, is to follow the simple actions that we have been talking about for a long time now: wear a mask when out in public and in social settings, practise good hand hygiene and physical distancing where appropriate and get your COVID-19 booster shot. “Doing these things will decrease your likelihood of infection and severe COVID-19 symptoms if you do catch it.” With the onset of winter, the Southern district is also seeing an increase in influenza infection, with presentations at emergency departments because of flu already increasing.
Dr Susan Jack, Medical Officer of Health, says: “New Zealand’s borders have opened, and while we welcome visitors, we are also now seeing flu strains circulating in our communities. “A flu vaccination will reduce your risk of severe flu symptoms, reduce the likelihood that you will require hospital level care, and decrease the likelihood that you will pass the influenza virus onto others.” Flu (influenza) vaccination is free for anyone over the age of 65, Māori and Pacific people over the age of 55, pregnant people, and anyone with underlying health conditions. Many workplaces also offer free flu vaccination for staff. Ministry of Health figures show last week there were around 800 new positive cases a day in the SDHB region, with around 5500 active cases. Fewer than 30 people in hospital, who’ve tested positive for Covid-19. In Queenstown-Lakes, the number of new cases being reported were around 130 a day, with the total active cases number hovering around the 700 mark. Daily Covid-19 case number updates have been shelved by the SDHB as numbers stabilise and interest wanes in the pandemic. Southern District Health Board’s media team provided weekday case numbers through the Omicron outbreak and the original outbreak. But, with case numbers dropping, they are transitioning to twice weekly updates on Tuesday and Friday, from this week.

Bin checks start this month by Paul Taylor
Bin checkers will be out on the streets from this month, looking over what residents are putting in their yellow recycling bins.
Buttar says lots of councils across Aotearoa New Zealand do bin checks, however this is the first time for Queenstown Lakes.
Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is introducing the bin check trial to help reduce contamination.
The checks will take place across the district. Bin checkers will be out in the early morning before the rubbish and recycling trucks do their rounds.
Bins will be stickered as either ‘superstar recycler’, ‘almost awesome’, or ‘contaminated recycling’.
Staff will not be going through the whole bin, nor will they tip the contents onto the footpath. Bin checkers will be wearing high-vis vests with Save Our Stuff logos.
Where bin checkers find contamination, they will leave an information pack attached to the bin which will provide the household with information on how to recycle with care. If a bin is heavily contaminated with rubbish, it will not be emptied because it will contaminate the recycling in the truck. In this case, the bin will be stickered and left at the kerbside. It will be up to the resident to remove all the contamination before they put their bin back out again on their next collection day. QLDC Waste Minimisation Officer Kath Buttar says the purpose of the bin checks is to help improve the standard of recycling in the district. “Most people are doing a really good job at recycling and we know it’s something many people in our community care about, but unfortunately we are still seeing some contamination coming through our sorting facility. “It’s really important that we have a high quality of recycling so that we meet the strict standards set by our recycling reprocessors and enable collected materials to be turned into new products. “Putting the wrong items in recycling bins not only makes it harder to meet recycling quality standards, but it also impacts the recycling crew at the Queenstown Wakatipu Recycling Centre who hand-sort all kerbside recycling. We want to stop rubbish or dirty recycling going in the recycling bin to make their job easier and more pleasant.”

Twitter Deal on Hold Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk says his $44B deal to buy Twitter is temporarily on hold, weeks after agreeing to potentially take it private. The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX announced the hold last Friday via Twitter, saying he wants more details on the platform’s disclosure that spam and fake accounts comprise less than 5% of its 229 million daily users. He later tweeted he is still committed to the acquisition. Musk’s announcement comes two weeks after Twitter made the disclosure in a quarterly filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Twitter itself had cast doubt on the total figure of spam and fake accounts, saying the figure is likely to be higher. Musk has been vocal about wanting to clean up spam bots on Twitter that mimic real people. If he were to cancel the deal—depending on the details— he may potentially owe Twitter a $1B breakup fee. The sale, which has a total value of £4.25 billion ($5.25 billion), is expected to be completed in late May subject to all necessary regulatory approvals. Apple director of machine learning departs over return to in-person work policy Apple has faced quite a bit of pushback from employees over its recent return to in-person work. Now, Ian Goodfellow, Apple’s director of machine learning, has departed the company over its return-to-work policy. Apple poached Goodfellow from Google back in 2019 to join its “Special Projects Group” as the director of machine learning. Goodfellow is referred to as “the father of general adversarial networks, or GANs.” This technology can be used generate fake media content, something that has become increasingly important in recent years. Just three years after he joined Apple, however, Goodfellow is departing the company over its return-to-work policy. In a memo to staff, Goodfellow wrote: “I believe strongly that more flexibility would have been the best policy for my team.” 9to5mac.com
SpaceX brings 4 astronauts home, then launches 53 satellites SpaceX brought four astronauts home with a midnight splashdown last week, capping the busiest stretch yet for Elon Musk’s taxi service. The three U.S. astronauts and one German in the capsule were bobbing off the Florida coast, near Tampa, less than 24 hours after leaving the International Space Station at the end of their six-month mission. Their departure from the space station Thursday was bittersweet, as they embraced the seven astronauts remaining there. SpaceX had brought up their U.S. and Italian replacements the week prior, after completing a charter trip to the station for a trio of businessmen earlier in April. Barely five hours after splashdown, the company launched a fresh batch of its own internet satellites known as Starlinks from Cape Canaveral. There were 53 of the mini flat-panel satellites in this predawn load. AP News

Dear Mr Brightside, These dark evenings has brought my routine clock forward. Dinner at 7pm has become dinner at 6pm!!! Darkness by 5pm means I’m less active after work. I find myself so bored in the evenings and eating far too early.
A motivation dip as the earth spins away from the sun is scientifically proven for us humans. Darker days = darker moods. Increasing nihilism by 10%. You start off admiring the kayakers doing their twilight circuit around the Frankton Bay, now you snarl at their eagerness to flaunt their sustained motivation for physical exercise in all seasons and think deeply about your own lack of fitness. Some can carry on their outdoor activities no matter the condition, most of us aren’t that insanely positive. Does this sound like you? You buy into the importance of exercise but not completely. You exercise to enhance a sense of identity or reduce guilt. I have your diagnosis- Introjected regulation The dark frigid days has caused you to stop recreational movement completely, you stack on the winter weight while being stuck with your own dreary thoughts. Snap out of it and don’t give yourself a hard time. Life after summer is more than just one Netflix series after another. Hibernation is the divine opportunity to explore your inside hobby. Say hello darkness my old friend. Exercise maybe down but your creativity can soar. It always felt wrong to draw when the sun is shining... right? What do you want to learn? Knitting, guitar, cooking, reading, puzzles, PlayStation, drawing, working on that snore. The night skies the limit. You never know, your nihilist mood might produce a top sad song hit or a badly knitted mohair jumper. By exploring the potential inside and knuckling into a difficult craft project you open a door that may take you out of the room with its four walls of boredom. Splash a jug of orange juice on your face and organise an event. That ass would look better if I saw it copying the moves of a YouTube yoga tutorial. How is that for motivation! In terms of dealing with your early bird feasting habit may I suggest snacking on carrots to pass the hour. You might end up being able to see in the dark which is quite the level up.
If you have a dilemma, send a brief email to enquiries@qmg.co.nz

Wānaka parade for Olympic stars by Paul Taylor
Incredible achievements by Queenstown Lakes snow athletes will be celebrated with a parade through Wānaka this Sunday. The Snow Sports NZ team has taken 31 podium positions on the global stage in the past six months, with 16 of those being gold medals or top spots in International competition. They include Olympic golds for Zoi Sadowski-Synnott and Nico Porteous, in the snowboard slopestyle and freeski halfpipe respectively, and the pair are also current X Games champions. Zoi also took silver in the big air at the Beijing Olympics, held in February, while a host of other skiers and snowboarders did their country proud. Since then, the success has continued, most recently with Queenstown snowboarder Tiarn Collins becoming the first Kiwi snowboarder to win the FIS Snowboard Slopestyle Crystal Globe for the 2021/22 World Cup season. The majority of the snow sports athletes train at Cardrona Alpine Resort, roughly half way between Queenstown and Wānaka, and Snow Sports NZ made Wānaka its home base for the Winter Olympics. The Parade starts at midday, Sunday, May 22, and will run along Ardmore Street, into the lake front car park, before winding its way up to the Lake Wānaka Centre, where athletes will be available for a signatures. Free posters will be provided for children to collect their favourite sportsperson’s signature. There will be music from the Powder Chutes, a local Mount Aspiring College band at the Lake Wanaka Centre and spot prizes up to grabs, as well as prizes for the best painted face, with the theme being Snow Sports. The party atmosphere will be going till 2pm at the free event.

Athletes Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, Nico Porteous, Adam Hall and Corey Peters will then be travelling on the Snow Sports NZ Celebration Tour after the Parade, to Auckland for media opportunities on Monday 23 May, Ohakune on Tuesday 24 May, Wellington Wednesday 25 May and Dunedin and Queenstown 26 May.

MENTAL health
Where are you with your mental wellness? Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland
Let’s look at where you are with your mental wellness as the world focuses on this topic this month. And here’s why, we have been so busy over the last year. I feel that it is not mental health awareness month, it feels more like a year’s focus and so it should be. One of the main things that clients say to us when they have their first session, is that they have never needed help before, this is the very first time and they feel like a failure because they are having to ask for help. The truth is that this is an illusion, they are far from a failure, they are courageous and being true to themselves, where they are at right now and know that something needs to change. They did the hardest thing and this was to find someone to help them make those changes, it is easier to hope it gets better, to hope it just goes away and kid yourself that it is just a ‘phase’ you are going through. It will pass. But it likely does not. It gets worse and it becomes a vicious circle. Take a moment and think about how you are with you, answer these simple questions below and let’s do a little mini wellness health check.
Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland runs an International Neural Coding® Company. She has 30 Neural Coders working with her around the globe, online to help people identify their problem, delete it and install neural coding that empowers them.
We have a team of about 25 Neural Coders® who help people on a daily basis all around the globe on ZOOM, if this interests you check out the link below. The other thing that will really help is to sign up to our online course ‘Just Be Me’ it helps you find your true North, it is around 5 hours of online training, video driven and we have given this course away over the last two years to around 4500 people and they love it, it is still free so hop on and spend some time for you. For help one on one help: https://yourlifeliveit.com/coaching For our online course Just Be Me https://yourlifeliveit.com/course/just-be-me-nlp-course
1. Do you back you, do you trust you? 2. Do you like yourself? 3. Do you enjoy time alone? 4. Do you practice self care, do exercise, eat well, and take time for yourself? 5. Do you have healthy loving relationships? 6. Do you have a purpose and know why you are here? 7. Do you know what your future will look like? If you answered yes to most of these questions then you are in really good shape, you know yourself, you like who you are, you have people around you who you love, you are looking after you and you have a clear idea of what your life will be like. All good healthy stuff. If you answered no to most of these then you might want to reflect on how long has this been like this for you? Is this a new thing or does it feel familiar? One telltale sign we find clients is that they have negative self-talk, they berate themselves often and speak to themselves in a way they would never speak to another person. Watch out for this and catch yourself. If any of this has resounded with you then become aware of what is not working for you, are you sabotaging your happiness, are you putting off doing things you want to do and making excuses? Knowing that time is slipping by and taking action will help to give you control and put you in the driver’s seat, this alone is empowering. Connect with someone who can help, reach out to a good friend and chat to them about how you’re feeling, reach out to a professional who can help you make changes quickly, it will never be as hard as you might think.

COMMUNITY NOTES Supporting staffs’ mental health is good for business and the community By Anna Dorsey, General Manager, Southern Wellbeing Trust
It’s definitely tough out there for many businesses right now. Staff and material shortages are the latest in a long line of COVID-related blows to the business community and that means more pressure on staff and owners to keep putting the ‘open’ sign up. Yet while we can’t do a lot to control the economic climate, business owners can do something to control how equipped they and their staff are to deal with these mounting threats to their team’s mental health and wellbeing. When people are suffering from mental distress, having someone to talk to early on can make a real difference and stop a situation from escalating. People are more likely to talk to a trusted workmate, friend or family member before they reach out for professional help. Giving your team the skills to handle those tough conversations can make a real difference to a person who is struggling and can help them take positive steps to support their wellbeing before things get worse. Would your staff know what signs and symptoms of mental distress to look for? What to say to someone who is clearly not coping well? By building the capacity of your team to talk to each other about mental health and learn how to listen, what to say and what to do, you are proactively helping your staff to get through these challenging times. What’s more, investing in the mental wellbeing of staff shows employees that you care, not just about the KPIs and targets but about them as individuals. By giving staff and people managers the skills and resources to talk about mental health you’ll be taking positive steps to avoid burnout, reduce absences and help staff feel supported and listened to. It’s about doing what we can do in these challenging times. Facilitators Jazz Braden and Mary Mansell delivering a GoodYarn workshop
At the end of the day, every business owner and staff member has mental health, just like we have physical health. So, by learning more about it, we can take steps to look after it and keep ourselves mentally well. People who attend our workshops tell us they are able to use the skills they learn straight away, in their communication with their partners, colleagues, family and whanau. It’s powerful stuff and it helps build a community that we can all benefit from. So, let’s not waste this opportunity to support our staff and leaders to protect their mental wellbeing, so that we can reap the benefits not just as members of a business but also as a community. Free GoodYarn Small business workshops are running through May and June funded by Te Hau Toka Southern Wellbeing. Visit www. southernwellbeingtrust.org to find out more or book your place. Where and when: • Frankton - Small Business GoodYarn Workshop at Sherwood Hotel, May 24th between 11am-2pm • Queenstown - Small Business GoodYarn Workshop at The Exchange, June 1st between 1pm-4pm and June 16th at iFly, 27 Breckon Street between 9am and Noon. • Arrowtown - Small Business GoodYarn Workshop at The Dishery, June 9th between 6pm-9pm • Wanaka - Small Business GoodYarn June 30th Workshop at b -effect brewing co, Anderson Rd between 1pm-4pm

Arts+Culture Art you can really get into by Bethany Rogers
The first exhibition in the brand new Te Atamira art space will be textural artwork that you can really get into.
“I liked the vibe there. If you brought in a shoe and had a good story behind it, it was good. It was: anything goes!”
Bailee Lobb is a queer, disabled artist originally from Whanganui and now based in Wellington. An award-winning artist, she’s known for her work with video, electronics, textiles and light to create immersive installation and performance work.
Bailee approaches artwork as a whole-body experience. She wants people to feel and fully experience her work.
Bailee’s artwork In Bathing, Bask will open on 16th May in Te Atamira’s Whakaari gallery space. The artwork’s an installation of large, brightly coloured inflatable sculptures that are fun for all ages. It’s designed to turn the gallery into a playful and immersive environment. “If you’re not touching this artwork, you’re not experiencing it properly. I’m yet to make an artwork that you can’t feel. It’s the first thing I think about when I create: how will people experience this?” explains Bailee. Bailee admits to being a ‘tactile’ person: “I can’t not touch things. Going to galleries is hard for me! I’m a very texture-orientated person. So I’ve brought that into my art.” Her love of textiles comes from her creative family background. Her mother is an interior designer and her father was an architect. Bailee’s father died when she was very young and her aunties became a big part of her young life. A particularly creative bunch, they took her along to arts and craft classes and taught her to knit and sew. “I learned a lot of random skills very early on from my mum and aunties. I knew how to felt, knit and sew and had done a book-binding course all before I was about 10 years old,” she laughs, “I feel like I was raised to do this!” Bailee studied architecture at university, but illness forced her to take a break. When she returned, she realised she didn’t like the strict stricture and lack of playfulness in the discipline. So she explored other options, eventually drawn to the free creative vibes at the University of New South Wales (Sydney)’s art and design school.
“For me, I need to be overwhelmed by a thing. It has to be a really good texture, or it needs to include a full-body movement. The experience of sensory regulation is that you have to go inside it. […] People often ask me if they can bring their kids and yes! It’s supposed to be very accessible and family-friendly and I hope that it stimulates conversations.” Te Atamira’s Whakaari gallery space will be the largest space In Bathing, Bask has even been exhibited in, but Bailee hopes that this won’t stop people from going inside and becoming immersed in it. “Usually, you have no option but to go inside because it’s so big it’s touching the walls! But this space is a lot bigger.” Because the space is so new, Bailee has only seen architectural plans and renders of the space. She says she’s excited to be the first to exhibit there and adds that Te Atamira holds great promise for Queenstown. “The space is large and open. It’s great. They’re going to be able to have some amazing, big exhibitions there. Galleries are usually long and narrow, so they tend to lend themselves to only one kind of artwork. With Te Atamira, it’s big, it’s open, so it’ll be great for all kinds of artwork, like sculptures and a lot more interactive stuff. “With a space like this, you’re opening yourself up to public art more and that’s really exciting for a place like Queenstown where a lot of people visit. I know people are coming to see the mountains mainly, but this is an opportunity to draw in a non-art audience, having public art that speaks to everyone and gets everyone excited about art.” In Bathing, Bask by Bailee Lobb runs 7 May – 12 June 2022 at Te Atamira (Dart House, Remarkables Park Town Centre). Admission is free and the exhibition is suitable for all ages.
Art News Warhol’s Bullet-Marred Portrait of Marilyn Monroe Sells for $195 M., A Record for the Pop Artist OAndy Warhol’s 1964 silkscreen portrait of Marilyn Monroe, arguably one of the most recognizable images born out of the last century, sold for a record-setting $195 million (including fees) at Christie’s New York on Monday evening. The result makes it the most expensive work by a 20th-century artists ever to be sold at auction. It sold to art dealer Larry Gagosian, who was bidding in the room. The painting, Shot Sage Blue Marilyn (1964), depicts a press photo from Monroe’s 1953 noir film Niagara. The image of the actress is one Warhol used repeatedly in his work until his death in 1987. It derives
from his “Shot Marilyn” portrait series, which Warhol produced after an incident at his downtown studio when he prompted a collaborator, Dorothy Podber, to shoot into a stack of canvases
QLDC Libraries Librarian Profile
Lakes Weekly Bulletin and Queenstown Lakes Libraries are profiling our librarians. This month we are profiling Shana Makuta who is a District Children’s Librarian at the Queenstown Library.
They say that no one is born in Los Angeles, but I was! After suffering through smog, traffic, and crowds, I had finally had enough. In 2006, I unknowingly permanently went on vacation to Queenstown, and since Trump, Covid, and the absolute ongoing disaster regarding Women’s Rights in the US, it was a good move. Living the carefree life, I fully embraced the transient tourist life and ran a backpacker for a number of years. Back then, it seemed that Queenstown was the land of opportunity and so I took a few chances, hence, some of you may remember, “El Taco Trucko” a fun SoCal-style taco truck that tried to “compete” with Ferg in the wee hours of the night. A shortlived but fun adventure. The next adventure was children - having and educating them – still ongoing lol. Having graduated from UC Berkeley (so long ago), with a BA degree in Comparative Literature (la French and English), it seemed I was destined for teaching.

Queenstown Lakes District Libraries
Women’s work? Down with the patriarchy! Currently I am the Children’s and Youth Services Librarian for the district – a perfect combination of my love of child brain development, literacy and fantasy YA. I read boring non-fiction books about how to raise your children, but then forget, and do the opposite. I love YA fantasy fiction with strong female protagonists who develop super-human skills around menarche. I love our amazing community and feel really lucky to be able to work with such inspiring librarians who deserve more credit than they get!
But after a year distance learning with Canterbury, I quickly learned that teachers are the most overworked and underpaid people responsible for shaping tomorrow’s future. My current book recommendations: The Medoran Chronicles by my favourite Lynette Noni
A great YA fantasy fiction series featuring a strong female protagonist who kicks a little bit of otherworldly bum in order to save the world(s).
Period Repair Manual by Lara Briden
Imperative read for anyone with a uterus, and interesting for those without! Power to the progesterone! Her follow-up book, Hormone Repair Manual, is for anyone exploring perimenopause (like me!) or menopause.
The Whole-Brain Child (or any book) by Dan J Siegel
Dr Siegel is an amazing doctor who explains how the brain works at different ages, which influences why children respond the way they do, seemingly without choice! This book also supports parents, explaining how to approach discipline according to brain development and set up realistic cognitive expectations.
How to Talk so Kids will Listen & Listen so Kids will Talk by Joanna Faber
My motto in life is: Approach is key! This book is a great communication tool to put in your parenting toolbelt!
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
While not a neoliberal myself, I love the dark noir settings, and the characters. With twists and turns, and a super long proselytization of objectivism, take it for what it’s worth.
Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac
“I looked up and saw Japhy running down the mountain in huge twenty-foot leaps, running, leaping, landing with a great drive of his booted heels”. I think this quote influences my dreams. Everyone needs to read Kerouac at some point, and Dharma Bums is just so good.
Gardening Tips MAY IS A GOOD TIME TO… It takes years of practice, learning and experience before a gardener could ensure a productive garden all-throughout the year. For many gardeners, autumn is arguably the busiest planting season. It’s the time to plan staggered planting, turnover the soil, clean up the leaves, weed, trim, mulch and prepare the garden for spring. Garden Maintenance • Rake leaves up (leaves can be used for compost or mulch) • Enrich your soil • Trim your hedges • Fertilise your citrus plants • Mulch vegetable and fruit gardens • Move or cover frost-tender plants • Harvest your feijoa and the last of passionfruit • Turn over soil and replenish gardens • Plant winter flowering annuals • Deadhead flowers to encourage growth during spring • Get your bird feeders out • Look after your lawn • Plan for spring The Vege Garden Replenish your soil with a fresh load of compost and natural fertilisers like sheep pellets. A good range of inputs will improve the diversity of microorganisms in your soil. Now is a good time to plant celery, broccoli, onions, peas, kale and cabbage. Use the staggered planting approach to ensure a continuous supply. If you have some free space, you may consider cover crops like mustard or the native blue lupin (a nitrogen-fixer). A pro tip for seedlings is seaweed solution. If you have an abundance of chillies, you may want to dry them for future use.
Flowering Gardens Plant your winter flowering annuals and divide your perennials. It’s a great time to plant polyanthus, pansy, cornflower, poppy, statice, and lobelia! Purple and blue flowers are known to attract bees the most. Lobelias look beautiful when paired with pansies in hanging baskets. Whilst potted pansy and polyanthus simply look wonderful lined up on patios. Meanwhile calendula, also known as winter marigold, is a favourite amongst many gardeners because it repels many pests, attracts pollinators and blooms profusely in winter. Herb Garden Consider planting cold-hardy herbs like parsley varieties Italian flat leaf and curled. Natives There’s still some time for planting the hedges! Pittosporum varieties are fast-growing trees. You may also want to consider flowering natives like akeake green, kowhai, hebes, manuka and kanuka to attract pollinators to your garden as well as serve as habitat for native birds.
Happy gardening!

HAND UP FOR HAYATO
By Sue Fea
Queenstown athlete Hayato Yoneto is looking for a bit of a helping hand to take his promising athletics career to new heights internationally. The talented young 100m and 200m sprint specialist, who grew up in Queenstown, is now in his third year at Auckland University studying exercise science. In order to compete internationally on the world stage next season Hayato is on the lookout for sponsors to help him raise the necessary $2000 for travel costs and coaching. Prior to Covid times Hayato could rely on his Queenstown parents, who own a tour company, for Hayato about to prepare for training at Mount more support. However, Smart Stadium in Auckland like most Queenstown businesses, their company - reliant largely on Japanese visitors - has been hit hard with the border closures and restrictions. He has now hired his own coach in Auckland - Joe Hunter, a former Athletics New Zealand coach. Joe also coaches Hayato’s training partner Josh Hawkins, the current 110-metre New Zealand Hurdles Champion. Josh is also a former World University Games New Zealand representative and placed second in the World Junior Championships. “There were no sports coaches in Queenstown so I specifically chose Auckland University, instead of Otago, to do my degree,” he says. He’s battled through the past few years coaching himself, and, while now back on campus attending lectures, Hayato has done much of his degree online due to Covid restrictions and lockdowns. “I’ve become really used to the online system, but I missed getting to meet people and talk about assignments.” Hayato’s interested in the movement aspects and biomechanics of sport. “I like analysing movement and seeing what I can improve from there,” he says. A nutrition course last year has been helpful in maximising his energy and performance output. While training’s underway for the late summer peak of events next year – four times a week on the track and in the gym, Hayato says that will be increased by November. “I need to be in full shape for the nationals in March in Wellington,” he says. There are a few big domestic athletics meets in the lead-up to that. “If all goes according to plan, Hayato will also compete in the Australian nationals this upcoming summer season. With his mum having to travel to Japan for hip surgery, and the family’s business affected by the restrictions, Hayato thought he would seek some local sponsors to help fund his athletics journey for the 2022/23 season. “My sponsors will get their company logo printed on my uniform and gear for training and race days.” They’ll also get a push on Hayato’s social medial channels. Athletics didn’t initially come easy to this hardworking young man, but thanks to a competitive streak in him he took on the challenge. “When I was at Queenstown Primary School I just showed up on athletics day and ran. I was never serious about it,” says Hayato. “I went to a Southland Secondary Schools meet while in Year 11 at Wakatipu High School and got last. I hated that so I started training.” In Year 12 and 13 he won those championships twice, clocking up a Southland record of 10.97 seconds for the 100m in Year 13. “It was a good starting point getting across that 11 second barrier.”

No Sweat
By Sue Fea
Now an Auckland Airport firefighter at just 27, former Queenstown Airport firefighter and ice hockey star Rikki-Lee McLean is already a poster girl for equal opportunity. A full-time, paid firefighter for almost seven years, Rikki-Lee started her career at 21, working as a volunteer firefighter for several years in Frankton before making the grade and joining the payroll, while continuing to volunteer as well. It may be a far cry from the typical 21-year-old female career, but one Rikki-Lee has loved every step of the way. It’s not for the faint-hearted. She’s had to jump over a number of hose reels to get to where she is now, least of all the rigid process to become a fulltime Auckland Airport firefighter – a role she took up just over 18 months ago. “Initially I was a volunteer with Frankton Fire Brigade and one of the bosses in the rescue fire unit was the Queenstown Airport Rescue Fire boss at the airport,” says Rikki-Lee. “He said applications were opening soon and I should give it a go.” A fiercely competitive New Zealand Women’s Ice Hockey team member, Rikki-Lee is an advocate for persistence. She got all the way through to the interview process, narrowly missing out, but came back soon after to apply again and scored a job there. She was one of three young women selected from 140 applicants. There were five positions available on the recruit course that she was accepted for - three out of the five successful applicants were women - the first women for the Rescue Fire Unit at Queenstown Airport. Rikki-Lee is now one of 60 Auckland Airport firefighters, only four of them women. Each airport mostly has its own separate courses and training. While she was ranked a senior firefighter at Queenstown Airport, Rikki-Lee’s had to start again with her move to Auckland, but is now a qualified firefighter, working her way back up through the ranks. It’s a rigorous selection process, including a challenging physical and fitness test and a full day of team building, teamwork and leadership. “They check whether you’re good at taking instructions and put you under various stress tests, then it’s on to an interview if you get through that process.” Selected for the New Zealand Ice Fernz team, firstly as a reserve then in the team competing at the Women’s Ice Hockey World Championships in Romania in 2019, Rikki-Lee says her physical fitness has been a big help. The team scored a silver medal in their division that year. She’s keen to get back into full ice hockey training and competition around the country with Covid restrictions disrupting games last year. Unfortunately New Zealand isn’t sending a team to the Women’s World Championships in Croatia this year. Prior to firefighting, Rikki-Lee coached ice skating at the Queenstown Ice Arena. She’s regularly at the gym pumping weights, runs, hikes, and in summer she’s found at the beach surfing or diving in any spare time she has – that’s after her study is done. This year she’s also studying a paper in marine science, outside of her four day, full-time shifts, working two days and two nights on. The crew also works the airport’s industrial fire truck
which gets community call-outs 24/7. Fortunately, Rikki-Lee hasn’t had to attend too many actual plane crashes in her role, and flights in and out of Auckland have been very quiet this past two years. In 2018 she was on the crew tending to a light plane crash on the Queenstown Airport runway, but, thankfully, the pilot and passengers all escaped safely.
Rikki-Lee and her dog, Skyh, enjoying the outdoors
“In Auckland we’re trained to be First Responders and we can be tending to anything from a cut finger to a cardiac arrest,” she says. The airport fire crews also attend some marine incidents on Manukau Harbour. Fortunately his life wasn’t in danger, but a guy wearing gumboots and shorts once jumped the runway fence, running over the Queenstown Airport runway when an approaching plane was still some way off in the distance. “The police came with us and apprehended him.” Rikki-Lee has been the frontwoman for Auckland Airport’s recent campaign to attract female applicants to its firefighting crews. It’s important to have a desire to help people, kindness, a good sense of practicality, and to be resilient, says Rikki-Lee. The work can be quite upsetting at times, but she’s learned how to distance herself emotionally. “I feel like I’m good at separating my emotions from jobs.” While women have to fight that little bit harder to be recognised in some roles, Rikki-Lee assures the male firefighters on her shift have been awesome and totally inclusive. “You always get a bit of sexism anywhere, but I’ve never experienced it badly. I’m quite a strong personality and I just don’t put up with it.” Her advice to any women contemplating a career in firefighting is to get plenty of life experience in challenging settings. It’s also great to get involved with local volunteer brigades too. “Join different

clubs and get out of your comfort zone. Put yourself out there,” she says. “Above all, don’t be intimidated by anyone or allow anyone to make you feel inferior. Lead with confidence and go for it,” she says. Not surprisingly, Rikki-Lee has already completed the Sky Tower Stair Climb charity fundraiser race, wearing and carrying 20 to 25kg of kit and breathing apparatus. She’ll be in training soon for this year’s August event to fundraise yet again for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand.

The pandemic’s disproportionate impact on women is derailing decades of progress on gender equality Authors: Holly Thorpe, Professor in Sociology of Sport and Physical Culture, University of Waikato | Allison Jeffrey, Postdoctoral research fellow, University of Alberta Simone Fullagar, Professor, Gender Equity in Sport, Griffith University
During the global COVID-19 pandemic, women have carried much of the unpaid emotional and domestic burden of caring for their families and communities, often simultaneously holding down paid jobs, many on reduced hours or salaries.
Such strategies have helped them manage unprecedented levels of stress in their own lives, and the lives of those around them. Women have been active and creative in the ways they’ve found to care for themselves and others.
Women have also been disproportionately affected by job losses, particularly women of color and ethnic minorities. Worldwide, women lost more than 64 million jobs in 2020 alone, resulting in an estimated US$800 billion loss of income.
Yet these everyday acts of care by women for their families and communities are rarely seen, valued or acknowledged.
Mirroring these trends, women in Aotearoa New Zealand faced greater economic, social and health challenges than men. In 2020, women made up 90% of pandemic-related redundancies. In 2021, many more women were working in “precarious” jobs. Wāhine Māori and Pacific women, already facing greater inequalities, have been even harder hit by job losses. During this time, rates of domestic violence against women and girls surged in New Zealand and around the world, prompting some to refer to a “double pandemic” or “shadow pandemic”. Women’s physical and mental health has been heavily affected for both frontline workers and in the home. As ongoing research by a cross-cultural team of feminist scholars has been documenting, New Zealand women have found different ways to cope through the various stages of the pandemic. But with the pandemic exacerbating gender inequalities in most areas of life, the fear is that decades of (albeit uneven) momentum towards gender equity is being lost.
Recovery designed for women While some governments have taken steps to address women’s well-being during the pandemic, such as introducing shorter or flexible work hours, they remain the minority. Organisations such as the United Nations and the OECD have identified the need to develop better support for women within pandemic recovery programmes. And some countries have advocated more progressive strategies, including prioritising local feminist and Indigenous knowledge. But the uptake of such initiatives has been minimal at best. In Aotearoa New Zealand, the 2021 Wellbeing Budget sought to “support into employment those most affected by COVID-19, including women”. But the focus on male-dominated industries (such as construction and roading), and lack of initiatives aimed at women as primary carers, meant this was largely a missed opportunity. While this general lack of gender-responsive policy has been troubling, women have been far from passive in their own responses, both individually and collectively. As the stories of women from diverse backgrounds in Aotearoa New Zealand have shown in our own and others’ research, many have turned to their own cultures, social networks and religions to help them through the pandemic. Others have used sport and exercise, nature and digital technology to build a sense of belonging and support during difficult times.
Questioning roles and expectations As the pandemic continues, women everywhere are suffering the “hidden costs of caregiving”. In Aotearoa New Zealand, as elsewhere, new COVID variants have seen them even busier caring for sick family members – often while unwell themselves. The effect has been to rethink priorities, who and what is most important, and to question the expectations shaping their lives. Some of the women in our studies have taken bold steps – starting a new business, moving town, reorganising work-life balance, putting their own health first. Others have simply acknowledged their own vulnerability and need for community. As two of the women we interviewed said: I think for me it’s been more of a reaffirmation that what I am doing is good enough […] Like I don’t need to be all of these things. We put so much pressure on ourselves […] we spread ourselves too thin […] trying to be a whole bunch of other people’s ideas of being the best person. You need to be real about how you are feeling and a little bit vulnerable, not hide things or bottle things up or try to be everything to everybody. I learned the power of being vulnerable, of people and community, and the importance of connection and the importance of kindness and being okay with whatever you’ve got in your mind.
Learning from women’s experiences The stress and mounting fatigue characteristic of life during COVID-19 are undoubtedly prompting many women in Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas to ask questions about the gendered economic and social systems that may no longer be working for them, and the infrastructures that are failing to support them. Some are turning away from their busy working lives, opting instead to find a slower pace, to live more sustainably, and to give back to their communities in a range of ways. Some even refer to the gendered effects of the pandemic economy as the “great she-cession”. But it’s clear we need to better understand the social, economic and cultural conditions prompting these changes. What we can say, however, is that genuinely gender-responsive policies are urgently needed. The often used mantra of “building back better” must prioritise the knowledge of local women in all their diversity, and there is much we can learn by listening to women’s everyday experiences of the pandemic. Not doing so risks decades of gender equity work slipping away.
