Resist the darkness Hello Queenstown, it’s time to shine. When LUMA got pulled at the start of the year, the crew had to ask some serious questions about the future and how we could carry on with so much uncertainty swirling around us like a giant germ-filled whirlwind. It was some dark times for sure but we decided it was also an opportunity. A chance to test out some ideas we’ve been working on over the last seven years. To have a think about how bright LUMA might glow if budget, support and vision were on our side. What type of events landscape does Queenstown aspire to? How much are we all prepared to give in order to bring our town out of the shadows? Are we able to match our passion for storm water systems, traffic cones and block paving with our support for arts, culture and entertainment? Surely! It’s time to test our reputation for welcoming all comers and delivering the magic. To find out if we’ve still got what it takes to be at the top of our game and deliver on all those promises we made over the last two years that started with the words ’When things get back to normal…” It’s time to think what we want to be part of. To ask how we can work together to own our future and not leave it to chance. Time to come back to life and stake a claim on our culture. It’s time for LUMIFY. Not LUMA, true. But another pilot project to help us light up the way to something we can all support and share. LUMIFY can only ever be a small fraction of what LUMA sets out to be, but that’s how we grow right? Small pieces coming together and making something stronger, more beautiful and collaborative. We’re calling on Queenstown to resist the darkness. Light up your neighbourhood, pimp your pushbike or strap a glowstick to your wotsit but get out there on Queen’s Birthday Weekend and have a little look at what’s going on at our place. Over the next few weeks the LUMIFY crew will be working hard to pull together a collection of installations, pop up spaces and illuminated performances in the laneways of downtown Queenstown. We’ve always had great support from our vibrant business community and without your continued help it’s going to be hard for LUMA to thrive in future. Now, over the next few years, Waka Kotahi / NZ Transport Agency plans to add another 16 sets between Ladies Mile and downtown. They are part of a $115 million package aimed at improving Queenstown’s roads, including new priority bus lanes, bus stops, an upgraded Frankton bus station and remodelling both BP Frankton roundabout and the turn-off to Lake Hayes Estate / Shotover Country. Waka Kotahi transport planner Tony Sizemore says the agency is working on the basic premise that the improvements, when finished, won’t create any additional delays for motorists. But they will improve public transport so more people choose to take the bus, reducing pressure on the network. He says while locals might baulk at the idea of so many lights, they will be actively controlled at peak times, improving the flow of traffic. “Roundabouts are really efficient up to a certain volume, and when you’ve got even flows on all the legs. “But when you have traffic, as we’ll see if we get a busy winter and the Aussies flock here for the ski season, that breaks down very quickly.” Sizemore points to evening traffic jams around Pak’nSave and Bunnings, and the BP roundabout. “We’ll be able to give more green time to the predominant flows and take some off the legs that are not so busy, such as in the evening peak when you have strong flows coming out of Queenstown. “You can get that green wave you see in one-way systems like Dunedin, where all the lights you hit are green. Obviously, it will be a little different for NZUP Queenstown package overview

“I don’t think anybody will be surprised about that. It has served us all very well for a long time, but it’s past its best-by date. “At the moment, it’s every man for himself effectively.” There’ll be a new roundabout at Howards Drive on Ladies Mile, with a new bus lane running from there to Shotover Bridge and starting again outside Bunnings, and then on into Frankton. The aim is to reduce the number of car trips. “Otherwise, you get in this endless spiral of providing more road capacity and more places to park. Queenstown, with its geography, has a finite capacity to absorb all that.” Frankton Road, for example, is between Queenstown Hill and Lake Wakatipu, and bounded by “some of the most expensive property in the country”. “We certainly don’t expect everyone is able to or will catch the bus, but for many it will be a reasonably simple choice to do so, especially if it is more efficient, if we’ve got the infrastructure and the frequency. The fares are very low.” Building that frequency will be incremental. “But you look at places like Hong Kong, and the density of public transport means you don’t even need a timetable, so people don’t even consider taking their cars. We are at the beginning of the journey.” The works will also improve the roads for pedestrians and cyclists, especially in Frankton. That’s a major plus when you remember the Stanley St lights eventuated after an eight-year-old’s leg was broken when he was hit by a car while crossing the road. Plans for pedestrian underpasses have not made the final cut, however. The work is being delivered by the Ka Huanui a Tahuna Alliance; Waka Kotahi’s partnership with Queenstown Lakes District Council.

Queenstown dunked in three waters by Paul Taylor

Queenstown Lakes Mayor Jim Boult says the model as it is understood today does not accurately reflect the significant demand placed on the district’s three waters infrastructure. “Like other areas in Aotearoa New Zealand that are a visitor hot spot we have a high number of non-resident ratepayers that maintain holiday homes which they visit regularly and rent out. “On top of that a peak day can see in excess of 50,000 visitors in our district. With roughly 48,000 residents that’s three waters infrastructure servicing nearly 100,000 people. “Within ten years that peak day figure will reach nearly 150,000. How can it be appropriate that our district is allocated just one share?” As part of the three waters reforms, the Government is offering financial support. This ‘better-off funding’ is for local governments to invest in local community wellbeing but must be applied for. Population accounts for 75 per cent of the Government’s weighting in considering the applications. Socioeconomic measures account for 20 per cent and the land mass of a council the remaining five per cent. In Queenstown-Lakes, the figure allocated is $16.13 million. Queenstown Lakes’ historic problem of a small resident population and masses of tourists will see it get a raw deal on three waters, says Mayor Jim Boult.

“Within a short timeframe demand on our infrastructure will be getting up there with the likes of Dunedin and Tauranga which are receiving funding allocations of $46 million and $48 million respectively,” Boult says.

From July 2024, four entities are to take over the provision of water services (drinking water, stormwater and wastewater – the ‘three waters’) from New Zealand’s 67 local government councils.

Other tourist districts across New Zealand are also under-represented, including Thames-Coromandel, where the population explodes by 400% over the summer.

The Government announced last week that councils are to receive nonfinancial shares in the new entities, with each council getting one share per 50,000 people in its district, rounded up so that each council has at least one share.

Its permanent resident population is just 33,000, which means it gets one share in Entity B, which covers much of the central North Island. That’s the same share as little Kawerau, with a population of 7,670.

But that means Queenstown Lakes, with a permanent population of about 48,300, would receive only one share in Entity D, which covers most of the South Island.

QUEENSTOWN ART SOCIETY ON THE MOVE by Scott Kennedy As has been long expected, May 20, will be the final day that the Queenstown Arts Centre will operate in its present location at the corner of Ballarat and Stanley Street. Some could say May 20 is the end of an era for Queenstown Arts Society as they vacate the building they’ve occupied since 1981 but this is not an end but a return to its grass roots. The Queenstown Art Society was formed in 1962 with an exhibition marking Whakatipu’s centenary year. The group’s beginnings were nomadic, meeting and exhibiting in various places until they moved into the Old High School Building in 1981. Now some 40 years on they are taking up the challenge of change again and moving into the newly purpose built space that is Te Atamira and set up the first exhibition in a very suitable new home. In some ways to celebrate a new beginning they are welcoming an old friend back into the fold. Longtime member Kay Turner was recently elected to be the President of the Art Society. Former President Diane Hart has stepped back from this leadership role to focus on other projects within the committee. “I’m excited to be leading a great team as Queenstown Art Society reshapes itself and focuses on new opportunities for the Visual Arts in the Whakatipu!” - QAS President Kay Turner As the prospect of preserving and moving the Ballarat Street Arts Centre building goes before the council and is open for public input - we wholeheartedly support this. We would love to see this building retained as a piece of local infrastructure focused on the arts. What an incredible legacy this will be for a building that was a pillar of the arts scene here in Queenstown for so long. When this building finds a new home, we would love to help fill it with art, artists, community and the vibrance of life. But in the meantime, we’ve got art to do. You will find us at Te Atamira the new council supported arts facility opening soon in Frankton. Here we will teach classes, run workshops, provide studio space for our members - and put on exhibitions all focussing on local art and artists.

In fact the very first show ever at this new space is all about us: Past, Present & Future: Celebrating 60 Years of the Queenstown Art Society. This new show (May 16 - June 12) will look back at where we’ve come from with pieces from our permanent collection, a show of work from current members and most importantly a look to the future - a future that isn’t just about the end of one chapter, but the beginning of another one. This isn’t the end - it’s the start of something fresh that they couldn’t be more excited about!

New chair for Queenstown’s housing trust Well-known Queenstown businessman Richard Thomas has been appointed as chair of the district’s housing trust. Richard Thomas, who is the chair of Destination Queenstown, a director of Skyline Enterprises Ltd, and former owner of Mountain Scene newspaper, takes the reins at Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust (QLCHT) from Andrew Blair. Blair retired at the end of April, having been in the role since October 2018. QLCHT deputy chair Joanne Conroy says: “We are delighted to have Richard join our team. “His intimate knowledge and understanding of local community issues, along with his extensive business acumen, means he’s well placed to steer the Trust on the next phase of its journey. We look forward to utilising Richard’s strong experience and capability in both the commercial and governance worlds.” Conroy also acknowledged the valuable contribution from Andrew Blair, “who led QLCHT admirably for more than three years. We feel privileged to have had Andrew at the table and wish him all the best.” Born and bred in Queenstown, Thomas says he is looking forward to progressing the Trust’s work even further as chair and a trustee. “I believe I’m well connected to the community and plugged in to the issues people in our region face,” he says. “The importance of wellbeing and community have never been greater in this very trying and uncertain COVID-19 environment. The stress and pressure on business owners, employers, employees, and families is real. It has significantly ramped up as the pandemic has taken hold and it will have long tail. “On top of that, inflationary pressure and the region’s housing affordability are putting home ownership even further out of reach for families wanting to call the Queenstown Lakes region home. I look forward to being part of the housing solution for many local residents in both the short- and long-term future.” QLCHT is a not-for-profit social enterprise created to manage and deliver affordable housing solutions to those vital to the community who cannot afford it. It has had many successes over recent years, helping hundreds of families, couples and singles into homes and rentals, through innovative ownership and building schemes.

‘KEEP QUEENSTOWN OPEN’ INITIATIVE In the media this week was a local initiative that focuses on assisting hospitality businesses in the current/upcoming staffing crisis by way of asking people to make themselves available to help local hospitality businesses, Locals Keeping Queenstown Open from memory is the initiative name. Now I’m all for thinking outside the box, using that imbedded term “Kiwi Ingenuity” however in today’s climate of fear and loathing of compliance requirements, I am wondering how any business in their right mind can just bring in help without meeting all the legal obligations that employers have these days. Will these helpers be employees? If so then they will need to be inducted, be paid, be subject to tax etc. If these are overseas hospitality staff who are on visas? Does their visa allow secondary employment? What about the health and safety requirements and obligations under the HASAW 2015 legislation? I’m sure this has all been thought through by the initiators which is great but the way it comes across in the media is that it’s rock on up and help out a mate. Imagine if your hospitality business has someone helping out who injures themselves, is not an employee, is on a visa that doesn’t allow secondary work (let’s not call it employment) and is not getting paid. Where does the liability lie? I would suggest that employment law is very clear on obligations and any business that doesn’t adhere to those obligations would find itself with a potentially larger issue on its hands than being short staffed. Especially if they need accreditation to employ staff on a visa OR are these helpers being paid cash under the table for their services in which case the black economy (sorry we can’t be accused of being colourist so let’s use the term opaque economy) is alive and well and this won’t raise red flags with IRD? Like I said a great initiative but some more details would be good to allay my concerns that this could do even greater damage to the town and add increased focus by government departments on what seems to be something that is far from transparent at face value. Russia earned $66B in fuel exports since start of war on Ukraine The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air’s report indicates that Russia has almost doubled its revenues in sales of oil, gas and coal since Putin’s forces began attacking Ukraine on Feb. 24, the Guardian notes. • “Fossil fuel exports are a key enabler of Russia’s military buildup and brutal aggression against Ukraine,” the study’s authors write. By the numbers: The European Union bought 71% of Russian fossil fuels via shipments and pipelines from Russia, the study found. • Germany imported more than any other country, according to the report — spending an estimated 9.1 billion euros ($9.65 billion). • Italy was the next biggest customer (6.9 billion euros), followed by China (6.7 billion euros), the Netherlands (5.6 billion euros), Turkey (4.1 billion euros) and France (3.8 billion euros). Russia’s oil and gas exports have not been subject to sanctions, though pressure is mounting for that to happen. • The nation’s majority state-owned energy company Gazprom has halted supplies to Poland and Bulgaria after the two NATO and EU member countries refused Russian President Vladimir Putin’s demands to pay in rubles. US GDP Shrinks The US economy shrank at a 1.4% annualized rate in the first three months of the year, according to figures released last week. The downturn marked the weakest period since the onset of the pandemic two years ago, and signaled a sharp reversal from the 6.9% annualized growth seen in the fourth quarter of last year. Analysts pointed to a number of factors contributing to the drop — January’s omicron COVID-19 wave, high inflation, the war in Ukraine, a decrease in fixed business investment, a widening trade deficit, and more. A drop in defense spending, along with the ramp-down of pandemic-era stimulus seen in 2021, also contributed to the slowdown. Despite the decline, many experts pointed to a 2.7% increase in consumer spending as a reason for optimism. The effects of expected interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve in the coming months, an attempt to combat inflation, remains to be seen. Market Watch

Mystery of 19th-century choirboy, who hid ‘remember me’ plea in church pew, is solved A 125-year-old letter penned by a Sunderland choirboy was discovered hidden in a pew during church renovations, in March 2022. Scribbled in pencil on the back of a chorister’s sermon, the message had been stashed away behind a metal plate in the choir stalls, where it remained undisturbed for well over a century. Its author was 13-year-old William Elliott from the nearby Sunderland Orphan Asylum, who was the ‘leading boy’ of the parish choir. Knowing he would soon be leaving the orphanage, he had jotted down his anxious thoughts on the nearest available piece of paper. Counting down to his 14th birthday, when he would be discharged from the orphanage, the letter read: “Dear friend, whoever finds this paper think of William Elliott who had two months and two weeks and four days on the 11 of August 1897. Whoever you are that finds this paper don’t tear it up or throw it away… “Keep it in remembrance of me, W Elliott… I was the leading boy of this choir… “I love you if you love me.” Heeding his wishes, the letter was framed and now hangs above the pew in which it was found. At the time of its discovery, centre manager Tracey Mienie said, “His letter has touched us all. He was clearly very aware that his time at the orphanage, and in the choir, was ending and I think apprehension at what his future may hold comes across in his words.” Classic FM

Aussie music returns for Queenstown long weekender Australia’s hip hop legends Hilltop Hoods are set to headline one of Coronet Peak’s biggest Night Ski parties of the season, as part of a long weekend of music on the slopes this July. Queenstown’s Coronet Peak Ski Area Manager Nigel Kerr is thrilled to have Australian acts touch down in Aotearoa, with borders now open. “The ski season is just around the corner and it’s great to have these exceptional Australian acts back in the country – we’re really looking forward to it,” Kerr says. This is Hilltop Hoods’ first New Zealand show in three years, since ‘The Great Expanse World Tour’ in 2019 which saw them playing sold out shows to over 100,000 fans in 14 different countries. In the New Zealand leg of the tour, after playing the country’s major cities, they pulled in a massive crowd of about 5000 spectators at Coronet Peak. Council and Immigration New Zealand’s (INZ) are working together in Welcoming Communities Te Waharoa ki ngā Hapori programme. Recipients announced for the third and final round of the Southern Lakes Regional Events Fund The Southern Lakes Events Investment Panel has announced the successful recipients of the third and final round of the Southern Lakes Regional Events Fund (REF). Funding for this final round was granted to 26 events to be held within the Southern Lakes region between April 2022 and April 2023, and totalled $2,338,000 in investment. The events that secured funding are collectively set to attract over 150,000 out-of-region visitors, delivering an additional 400,000 bed nights and $80 million in visitor expenditure across Queenstown, Wānaka and Central Otago. Southern Lakes Events Investment Panel Chair, Murray Strong, said the Panel is delighted to be able to support another 26 events in the wider region, scheduled for the next 12 months. “The overwhelming number of high-quality applications received shows that the events industry is back and ready for action. There is a wide mix of events supported in this round, ranging from large-scale with international appeal, to medium and small events with a domestic focus. Success of the REF funding is measured via economic, social and sustainability criteria with weighting towards the economic benefit that events bring, to replace the loss of international visitation to the Southern Lakes region. Planner recommends refusal of billionaire’s lodge plans by Maddy Harker / Wanaka App

A council planner has recommended US billionaire’s Peter Thiel’s proposal for a sprawling luxury lodge at his Damper Bay property be rejected. The recommendation, made public on Tuesday (May 3) comes shortly before a resource consent hearing for the proposal which will take place later in May. Building plans for the 193ha site located off the Wanaka-Mt Aspiring Road show three proposed buildings, described as ‘pods’ - with an owner’s pod, a lodge pod and a meditation pod - which would feature facilities including spas, libraries, pools and a theatre lounge. The buildings, designed by Tokyo Olympic stadium architects Kengo Kuma & Associates for Peter’s company Second Star Ltd, would together sleep 30 people. Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) planner Sarah Gathercole was not swayed by details like plant covered roofs, plans to nestle the pods into the hillside, or riparian planting and wetland restoration. “I acknowledge that the proposed buildings have been well designed and are elegant in nature, however given that they are visible from a number of key public viewpoints… I consider the proposed development is inappropriate in this location, particularly given that it is within an [Outstanding Natural Landscape],” she said.

As noted by others who submitted on the proposal, Sarah said the buildings would be visible from the Glendhu Bay track, the lake and surrounds, and Wanaka-Mt Aspiring Road. Gathercole said the “large scale” development did not have a link to farming activities on the site and they were not appropriate on the rural-zoned land. In addition, the positive effects of the proposal do not go far enough, Gathercole said “...I do not consider they will be significant, and may be limited to on-site positive effects, benefitting the applicant and visitors to the site rather than being positive effects for the wider community.” Peter, a successful tech entrepreneur, purchased the Wanaka property in 2015 for $13.5M and architectural plans for the site were first made public late last year.

“The trust has always been operating various positive youth development programmes and mentoring locally,” says Leah, who hails from a counselling background in Australia and took up her Queenstown position last spring. Services were expanded this year to include social work and counselling for young people. “It’s a reflection of the growth and need for increasing social services in the area,” she says. “Young people, or their families and other community-based services, can refer to us for support,” says Leah. Meanwhile, Wakatipu High School principal Steve Hall says local young people have been amazingly resilient throughout the past two years. “When you look at the last two years’ results our students have done fantastically well and overall they’ve been really resilient,” he says. “We definitely acknowledge though that there have been challenges for the community, especially some families and students.”

While this week – Youth Week – is a shout out to the resilience of the Wakatipu’s young people, it’s also a time when they themselves get to shout out. The theme for this year’s Youth Week is, “Our Voices Matter and We Deserve To Be Heard”, and it’s a time for our youth in the Wakatipu to do just that, says Whakatipu Youth Trust Clinical Manager and Youth Counsellor Leah Sellwood. “The activities we have planned this week are about raising youth voices in our community and learning more about what is important to them,” says Leah. “We’re excited to celebrate our youth and this theme speaks loudly to the trust’s mission.”

The photo competition is based on photos taken throughout this week by local young people that they believe best represent youth today. Steve says Wakatipu High School has had relatively few attendance issues. Many of his students are quite motivated to get a good education, something possibly inspired by the reasonably high expectations of the Wakatipu community, he believes. Some specific Youth Week events are being held this week at the school to celebrate local youth and hear about what’s important to them.

Local activities kicked off on Saturday (May 7) and run through until this Sunday, May 15. “’Youth’, by definition, has no universally accepted classification,” says Leah. “In essence, those described as youth fit into a fluid category where many significant developmental processes and milestones take place between the ages of 10 and 24 years old.” This week’s Youth Week celebrations at the trust’s Remarkables Park base are centred on creating an upcycled art piece, using magazines and media to highlight what local young people feel, see, and think. “It’s important to voice and talk about all of these things,” says Leah. “The aim of the art piece is to hear what’s important to our young people and we, the trust, can respond by offering different activities and programmes, and advocating for the youth voice to be heard locally.” Part of the daily fun organised throughout this week at the Whakatipu Youth Trust’s drop-in centre includes making Kokedama – a Japanese

FROM BAREFOOT BEACH KID TO ALPINE AMBULANCE The fifth child in a resourceful family of six, Sue Farry, grew up on the idyllic remote southern shores of Lake Taupo where the family lived off the land. “There was no power. We used a windmill for electricity and when there was no wind we just used candles,” says Sue, born in 1948 just after World War II. Her father hunted their food – deer, wild pigs, ducks, and fished, and from a young age Sue went on overnight hunting and fishing trips with him, learning to survive in the bush. “It was an amazing childhood and I learned all sorts of survival skills.” The family moved to Ohope Beach, near Whakatane, where most of Sue’s school years were spent. “We only had 15 pupils and our teacher would take us into the bush to learn, and draw maps of New Zealand on the beach. We’d fill in the Southern Alps, regional cities and towns.” Queenstown musician Nigel Hirst attended the same school. Sue’s family lived in an army tent on the waterfront while her entrepreneurial father developed one of New Zealand’s first oyster farms, also building their house. Growing up in a predominantly Maori population and attending Whakatane High School, a year-long Rotary exchange to an upstate New York technical college in 1966 was quite a culture shock for Sue. “I was hosted in Binghamton where the first mainframe computers – the size of rooms - were being built.” Tragically, her host family had just lost one son to leukaemia and a second was sent to fight in the Vietnam War. “It was a huge awakening for a little barefoot girl from Ohope Beach who had grown up building sandcastles,” says Sue. “It was a difficult time. Young men were being drafted with only time to grab pyjamas and a toothbrush before their departure to a military training camp. Many were escaping to Canada.” These were the days of ‘Love Not War’ and Sue recalls visiting Cornell Campus and hearing a newly-emerging Bob Dylan play - the beginning of the Woodstock era. Back home in 1967, studying physiotherapy at Otago University, Sue was hitchhiking back from an Easter break in Murchison and accepted a ride with a young, final year Otago medical student. That would set off a new trajectory for her life. Just prior to that she’d been picked up by a band in a Morris van. “I remember squashing in between the symbols and drums in the back.” But they were no match for a handsome young Pat Farry in his sister’s Renault. “He made you laugh. He was happy and had a good sense of humour.” Romance began with an eventual two-year long distance relationship while they both pursued careers – Sue in Palmerston North then Whakatane hospitals and Pat finishing his surgical training in Dunedin. There was no rush. “You’ve got to keep them dangling,” she grins.

Sue worked for a while at Queen Mary and Wakari hospitals in rheumatology, general surgery and obstetrics. Quite by chance she’d also ended up in a private practice with leading New Zealand manipulative physiotherapist Ian Searle. Here Sue found her niche. After she and Pat married in 1971 a surgical registrar stint in Dunedin followed with a move to Queenstown where Pat was invited to join GP Phil Airey. “We thought we’d been such goodie goods, let’s free wheel to Queenstown and have some fun,” says Sue, despite the arrival of the first of three sons, Simon. They moved to a tiny bach in Thompson Street in January, 1972, with fiveday-old Simon and two suitcases in tow. Dr Phil’s tiny archaic clinic was next to Wilkinson’s Pharmacy where wellknown Queenstown nurse Sheila Morris awaited patients. There was a plinth in the clinic with a stool stuck in the end to hold the head end up. They’d close the clinic at lunchtimes and head to the lake waterskiing for an hour. Sue continued to practise physiotherapy, while Pat established his Queenstown Medical Centre business. Initially she held antenatal classes in their lounge and the old Sydney Street maternity home, progressing her private practice to a room at the medical centre. Patients needing further treatment were brought home to the Farry’s spa pool. Sue also doubled as the local ambulance driver, driving the Farry’s VW Combi van up Coronet Peak in the mud, with her baby and dog, to collect Pat’s fracture patients. Pat had removed the back seats for easy loading to create a makeshift ambulance. “I remember running a power lead from the skifield kitchen to keep the Combi warm to get them down.” At the beginning of the ski season she’d help Dr Phil clean out the skifield tool shed and convert it into the First Aid room. “Phil would be hitting the rats as they vacated.”

When second son Ben was about to be born, Sue said no way was she giving birth in the old maternity home without a shower. Until then there was only a bath and women waited five days to get one. Pat knew the ‘don’t argue’ and quickly installed one himself. Sue recalls Queenstown’s legendary ‘Doc Anderson’ popping over to see her while at the maternity home.

In 1974, two toddlers in tow, Sue launched the Meals on Wheels service in Queenstown, teaming up with a few other local women to cook the meals themselves and deliver them to local elderly. Eventually they convinced the Southland Hospital Board to take over. “Pat probably did all the convincing,” she says. In those days local GPs ran the hospital. Bush telegraph was Pat’s on-call beeper back then. “We were on a party line and I’d be taking medical call-outs on the phone while cooking dinner if Pat was out on a call. Jack Patey ran the telephone exchange and lived up on Hallenstein Street so he could always see and know exactly where Pat was on a call-out and that’s how we got the message to him.” In the mid-1970s the ANZ Bank built the Queenstown Medical Centre’s original building on the Shotover and Stanley Street corner where Pat also did minor surgeries and Sue had her own physio room. The doctors eventually bought it. Her business, Queenstown Physiotherapy, quickly expanded to a purpose-built clinic and apartment next door. When the family moved out of phone range to a cottage on their land at Bob’s Cove they’d stay in town for the night if Pat was on call. “We only had a CB Radio for communications out here and were powered by a generator.”

A medical innovator, Pat was always keen to travel and learn so Sue and the boys became used to packing up and going to world centres of excellence. He was invited to assist with setting up the Family Medicine Programme at University of Miami in the 1970s, study family medicine and sports injures in Canada, and was with the first New Zealand delegation to look at acupuncture in China in the 1980s. Eventually a new modern home was built at the Cove. Sue and Pat, who passed away unexpectedly in 2009, later developed it into Queenstown’s now renowned, exclusive Punatapu Lodge, named a finalist in the New Zealand Tourism Awards. Punatapu’s luxurious privacy has attracted many well-known names, including Lord Hamlyn, of Hamlyn Press, and Hollywood A-lister Michael Fassbender. Sue’s been flown to Tasman Glacier once with local legendary pilot Don Spary, landing on the ice to treat guest, Kiwi actor Annie Whittle, who injured herself while filming with Billy T. James. She’s also travelled with a team of US women adventurers to Bhutan. The lodge has become something of an international commune for highly-skilled expats now working remotely from its peaceful tranquillity. Sue was delighted to have her own sons, and their families, home during the lockdowns. “I’ve been blessed, and the nicest thing is I’m still surrounded here in my little commune with amazing people.”

Arts+Culture The MILK Bottle People Project by Bethany Rogers

Frankton library’s MILK bottle project is about celebrating diversity within our community. Over a series of craft workshops (or by taking a kit home), Queenstowners are invited to create their own ‘bottle person’ or totem, representing who they are and where they’ve come from. Inspired by Christina Darras’ 2019 Bottle People installation at Craft Victoria (Melbourne, Australia), the project encourages conversations and ideas around our identity, belonging and kinship. Greek artist Christina Darras created more than 700 ‘people’ from recycled plastic bottles and paper-mâché. The idea was inspired by seeing many people – and plastic bottles – swimming and floating in the Mediterranean sea. Her 2019 art installation represents people trying to find a safe place to live and addresses themes of overpopulation and migration. “[Fellow librarian] Kay Turner showed me this video of Christina Darra’s project and we were in awe of it,” explains Library Assistant Natasya Zambri, “I was inspired by the brilliance, simplicity and the colour, as well as the intention behind her work.” Natasya contacted Christina and asked if the Queenstown Lakes community could do a similar project, inspired by Bottle People. Christina agreed. “We’ve tweaked that a little bit and called our project the MILK Bottle People, with MILK standing for Messages of Identity, Life and Kinship. “We want to hear all of the stories of migrants. We’re breaking that stigma around the word ‘migrant’ too – it’s a broad term that applies to anyone who has ever moved, right from one region to another within the borders of their own country, or from one country to another in a different part of the world. “It’s been refreshing to have conversations with New Zealanders who have moved from Auckland or Wellington to Queenstown […] or with people brought up in Queenstown who have a family history of their grandparents arriving here.” Everyone is encouraged to create a bottle totem at workshops held at the Frankton Library and the new Te Atamira arts centre. In the workshops, people will be able to select a recycled bottle and they’ll be shown how to plan and create their design. All materials will be provided. Take-home kits, with step-by-step instructions, are also available. Each artist will then fill in a form, sharing their personal stories of migration, identity and kinship.

The resulting collection of colourful bottles will be exhibited alongside each creator’s story at Te Atamira from 15th to 19th of June. The project aims to celebrate our region’s diversity and individuality through the powers of art, ideas, stories and experiences. Natasya hopes that everyone, regardless of where they’re from or their artistic ability, will join in. “Anyone can do this, regardless of their artistic ability or where you’re from […] really, it’s a community project for the whole Queenstown Lakes District. Come along and create a bottle!”

Auction house Bonhams will put up the dress for sale in Los Angeles on May 24.

Bonhams said the dress is one of only four of the original costume in existence. This particular dress, according to the auction house, has been pinpointed as the one Garland wore in the scene where Dorothy confronts the Wicked Witch of the West in her castle. The dress first came to Catholic University back in the 1970s, as a gift to the former head of the drama department, Father Gilbert Hartke. But after just a year, it was reported to have mysteriously gone missing. It wasn’t until May last year, that, in a moment of chance, the dress was found again. Bonhams estimated the dress’ value at between $800,000 and $1.2 million.

THE TIGHT FIVE: STEPHAN ROMER In the lead up to the First Thursdays Queenstown’s return we’re asking artists five questions about their practice. This week we talk to landscape photographer, Stephan Romer. Thinking though your art practice, when did it all click? For me it all really clicked in 2002 when I shot my first big Porsche campaign. When the head of the agency saw the results he was crazy with enthusiasm. Right there and then I knew that I had done something right. We returned to Germany, repacked our bags, and flew out the same day to the Canary Islands for a Ford ST campaign… it was the beginning of a very busy period in my photography career. What is it about a scene that piques your interest? It’s not so much the scene but what is going on in that particular moment when I am capturing the shot. Quite often the weather is a very important part. For example: a storm coming through, some fresh snow on the mountains, or reflections of a very quiet lake. This is what really enhances the shot. How much forward planning goes into your expeditions? A lot. It’s probably a throwback from my days as a commercial photographer when time was of the essence in getting the perfect shot. I still do a lot of research before heading out on an expedition and I may even do a recce of the area to really know what conditions I may be met with. But even then, you never know what conditions you’re going to be met with on the day and that’s part of the magic. What’s more enjoyable, walking into a location or shooting from a helicopter? These are two completely different ways of getting to a place of interest.

I love both experiences to be honest. Flying through the mountains in a helicopter is very special as adrenalin really does kick in and you have to be more spontaneous. In saying that, reaching the top of a mountain with all the gear on my back is incredibly rewarding. Oh, and good exercise! I hear that you’re working on a series which includes huts and buildings? The idea of huts came from spending time in the Maniototo. I call this collection ‘Lost Treasures’ and it’s one that I’m working on still, it’s constantly growing. I love that these old huts and buildings have so many stories to tell through their weathered surfaces over years and years in the elements. I try to capture these with my photography. Don’t forget the trees! I think I’m still a little in shock and very happy about this autumn we’re having. Hands up if you remember a better autumn. My memory can be sieve-like, I feel these are the kind of autumn we had when I first arrived in Central Otago 25 years ago. Endless hot summers and long long beautiful crisp autumn days. The only downside is the lack of rain Painful if you’re watering everything by hand and stressful to everything in our gardens. I live on a lifestyle block with very little water, generally I’ve tried to focus on lots of mulching and using any spare compost around my plants. As the years go by the love that goes into a freshly dug hole when planting trees is getting majorly amped up. Gone are the days of just planting the tree and good luck to you pat on the branch. I’ve lost too many trees that way through drought or rabbits. I have plenty that have survived but grow in a bonsai manner with the lack of nutrients they were given in their formative years. Many trees go through a multistage growing span just as we do from babies to young adults, if we provide them with water and nutrients. Don’t get me wrong, some trees that I planted with no love are virtually bonsai, others have boomed. The key observations I can make are 1. The better the shelter near the tree from prevailing winds, the better they grow. 2. Shelter can come in the form of other trees and fences. The closer your new tree is to this shelter the better its microclimate. 3. Other trees provide shelter but they also provide carbon in the form of leaf litter and underground root systems. This is not so great if we’re talking about huge mature trees like pines and eucalyptus. They are hungry and your young fruit tree will struggle to compete. The same can be said of being in close proximity to Poplars. 4. I have an amazing big ‘Cox’s Orange’ apple tree that is planted amongst a few natives: a flax, a hebe, a cabbage tree and a Kowhai. It’s never had any love but is doing amazingly well. Maybe the Kohhai is fixing nitrogen, maybe these natives have an abundance of beneficial indigenous microbes. There’s definitely a micro climate with all these shrubs/trees jostling for space. There will be plenty of natural mulching occurring and the flax acts like a living mulch, covering a large area of ground around the base of the apple tree. Now when I plant any trees there’s love going into that hole, mulch on the surface and good rabbit protection. Love depends on the tree. Natives get a blood and bone biochar mix, this seems to work wonders. This spring I intend to up the love with a NZ made mycorrhiza product. In short Mycorrhiza creates relationships with the plant root, facilitating nutrient absorption for the tree among other things. All of this is topped off with a rabbit guard and a deep wood chip mulch as wide as you can and minimum 20cm thick (it will settle down).

With fruit trees there are many ways to try and give them a head start, you could do the same as the natives. If you have access to a good quality compost this would be beneficial. The bigger the hole you dig and disturb soil the easier it will be in those first few years for roots to form and venture outwards easily. You can also throw in the biochar and mycorrhizae. One technique I love if you have a few trees is to mix up in a wheelbarrow or bin a few shovels of compost or vermicast or both, a few large dollops of molasses, a handful of rock minerals, liquid seaweed and some mycorrhizae. Mix it up into a sticky slurry with water. You don’t want this to be too wet, you’re after the slurry to stick to your tree roots. Dip your bare root tree in the mix and plant. If your trees are in bags, up the water content and pour into the growbag with the tree giving it a great soak pre planting. Even with the slurry mix the bigger the hole the more compost you can spare in that hole the better your trees will do. Finish off with rabbit protection if needed (is your property rabbit proofed? There’s plenty of rabbits in plenty of subdivisions in this region.) And a deep mulch. Consider planting comfrey as a ‘living’ mulch. 1m from the tree base on the windiest side. Then the comfrey tends to fall towards the tree. The comfrey can also be planted in a C shape on the low side of the fruit tree if the tree is planted on a slope. Planting 1-2 meter minimum from the base at 30-50cm intervals. This will grow into a mulch trap in a few years stopping your valuable mulch heading down the slope. Now if you’ve got fruit trees already planted doing nothing or needing some love you can apply a lot of the above to them. Old tree love. 1. Compost and mulch around the tree minimum 50cm radius. Remember 20cm thick layer of mulch now is setting you up for a few good years of suppresses grass competition. 2. Comfrey living mulch. Others you can try, lemon balm, fennel, lovage and lavender 3. Liquid seaweed is a great way to encourage a healthy tree and growth if needed. 4. Manure around trees covered with a wood chip mulch. You can repeat every few years. Don’t have any mulch or manure touching the tree itself as this can damage the tree.. 5. Bokashi buckets are fruit trees’ best friends. Bury around fruit trees to create nutrient bombs for the tree to tap into. Not doing Bokashi you could dig holes and chuck in your kitchen scraps and cover with 20cm of soil. 6. Foliar feed your trees with liquid seaweed or diluted bokashi juice (200 to 1) 7. Apple cider vinegar is an amazing natural product you can spray on your trees that don’t look so healthy. Great for fighting curly leaf and other bacterial/fungal diseases. 8. If in doubt, put spare compost around those trees. Even a little is a biological superbooster for your fruit tree.
