Can you imagine Voting is not until October but the candidate search for QLDC is very much on. We will definitely have a new Mayor in the Queenstown Lakes District with Jim Boult stepping down, and we will definitely have major changes at Councillor level too under the new Ward system introduced in 2021. If you tune out of Facebook and other conspiracy websites and take a look at reality for a moment, you will know Mayor Boult has advocated tirelessly for the betterment of the Queenstown Lakes over the past 6 years. Particularly at Central Government level and at a time of unprecedented disruption. So, it concerns me the first candidate who has put his name forward to replace Mayor Boult, Jon Mitchell, has launched his campaign with a press release littered with hints of corruption and conspiracy. Don’t get sucked in by clickbait Jon. I hope the election campaigns of everyone looking to win our votes this October quickly turn around, jump out of the gutter, and focus on the positive steps forward we can make for this district. The success of the Queenstown Lakes is based on building ourselves up not tearing each other apart. I know the inside workings of QLDC well as an ex-Councillor, and Local Government is far from perfect. In fact, the Local Government Act is a dog’s breakfast of bureaucracy and red tape. The amount of rate payer money that gets wasted going around in circles is mind boggling. Mainly the work of newly elected officials looking to change everything on an ideological whim. Sometimes I wonder how anything gets done. As with all businesses of 250+ employees, there are good ones and bad ones. However, one thing I can say with certainty, and the only saving grace of our political system, is that corruption cannot live within it. So, let’s shut up about that rubbish and get excited about the future. Because we need people leading our district forward into the future who know how to get things done. And to get things done in Local Government you need determination and patience followed by even more determination and even more patience. But always staying focused on the prize - improvement to the lives of your fellow ratepayers. That challenge of character and integrity will also see 7 Councillors contesting 2 new Wards in the Whakatipu after the 2021 representation review. Arrowtown-Kawarau and Queenstown-Whakatipu. Add in 4 Councillors over the hill and it will be a right royal ding dong around the council table as each Ward jockeys for position. That person at the head of the table had better come equipped with some seriously expert chairing skills. This district needs a positive personality leading us into the next 3 years and beyond. With a cohesive approach the little things that matter might actually get done. Shock horror. And with the right vision at the top, the big picture will be crystal clear. Can you imagine that. Action required urgently from Government by Mayor Jim Boult
There’s been some brighter faces around the district in recent days with the opening of the Australian border – well the effective opening given the drop of the requirement for isolation. That will be followed on 1 May with the similar treatment for all those from Visa Waiver countries around the world. Will this lead to a sharp rise in the number of visitors? I see it being more gradual but with the prospect of a really good ski season on the horizon. There are two things however, that could derail good ski season. First is obviously a lack of snow and there ain’t much we can do about that – it will be what it will be. The second is not in our control but in the control of central government. That is the lack of workforce. Practically every business I go into these days, has a sign on the door soliciting workers. Recent data tells us that in the last 12 months the average wage in our district rose 11.3% per annum. The national increase was 7.4% indicating a high demand for those workers who are available in our key industries. We continue to have a high reliance on migrant labour with around 15% of all filled jobs employing those folk. We also have the lowest number of job seekers since the pandemic began and to top it off job ads have almost quadrupled since a year ago. The roles with the biggest lift in job ads include those industries worst affected by the pandemic such as Hospitality and Accommodation. What will spoil a good ski season, is a poor experience for our visitors, because of the lack of workers. Some weeks ago when the Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism visited here, I took the issue up with them and asked them to give it further consideration. There’s been a deafening silence since. I’ve just put the finishing touches to a letter to the Minister for Immigration stressing the need for some action in this regard. There was a very welcome announcement earlier in the week regarding concessions for ski industry workers but they’re only part of the model that makes up a ski season visit to our district. There’s no point in having a great time on the ski field if you can’t get a meal at a restaurant or a clean room to stay in when you get down the mountain. Government need to consider this as a whole not just individual parts of a problem which can be addressed in isolation.
I’m also pushing the message to the minister that we need to address the matter of migrant workers who are here with visas that are soon to expire. Why on earth would we want to export these folk out of our district (or indeed our country) when we are desperate for workers? We need a repeat of the sensible thing the government did some time ago and provide an automatic extension for a further period. It makes no sense to recruit new people when we’ve got perfectly capable staff here already. Employers across all sectors are telling me that their biggest problem has gone from survival to how they attract staff. Rest assured that at my end, I will continue to pester government until we get some action.

Pride returns by Paul Taylor
Queenstown’s Winter Pride is one of the first major events to return to the calendar as the industry recovers from Covid-19.
“Last year, we had to cancel literally at the last minute, which was gutting,” he says.
The huge annual bash had to cancel at the eleventh hour last year due to pandemic restrictions.
“There were two stages. The bubble opened, so we put the tickets up for sale and it went crazy, with record demand from Australia.
It was a canary in a coalmine for the local events industry, with dozens of highprofile festivals, shows and sports events forced to cancel over the following months, including New Year’s Eve celebrations, Queenstown Marathon, the Motatapu, Wanaka A&P Show and the rest.
“Then the bubble closed, so we had to cancel the Australian tickets and focus on the domestic market. Then the alert levels changed and we had to restructure, and then we went back into lockdown, so had to cancel.”
But now organisers Martin King and Mike Hughes hope the return of Winter Pride will be the signal for better times ahead. Tickets are already on sale for the 10-day festival, which runs from August 26 to September 4, 2022. “We’re bringing Winter Pride back, ideally to 2019 pre-Covid levels,” King says. “We’ve got a full 10-day schedule, all our party events, our mountain events and everything in between. “We’re already getting a great response from Australia and right throughout New Zealand, so it’s looking really, really positive.” King says it has been an incredibly difficult few years as the festival responded to ever changing restrictions around Covid-19.
Contingency plans are in place for this year, particularly should the restrictions return around the number of people allowed inside a venue. “There’s still uncertainty, but the show must go on.” Winter Pride, which spans the weeks between the Australian and Kiwi school holidays, attracts thousands of people from the LGBTQIA+ community into town. Half of the attendees traditionally come over from Australia, with the other half domestic and from other nationalities. King says while there’s pent up demand to travel, he still senses some caution in the wake of Covid restrictions and with infections still relatively high. “The numbers are really strong but I think there’s nervousness in terms of potentially getting Covid while you’re travelling, paying for flights, accommodation and tickets. That’s for both Kiwis and Australians, who people quickly forget have been doing it really, really tough. “But, hopefully, by August, this will have eased and we’ll be able to have this huge party to celebrate.” Winter Pride 2022 will have 24 party events and eight onmountain days, at Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Cardrona Alpine Resort and Treble Cone. King also hopes by August Queenstown businesses will have been able to solve their staffing issues, and the festival has been approved for council funding. Southern Lakes Events Fund has been a “lifeline” for Winter Pride, he says. “It would have been very marginal as to whether we could get off the ground without that, but fortunately we’ve had that confirmed.”

Mayoral race opens up by Paul Taylor
Queenstown’s mayoral race finally kicked into life last week, although there’s only one man in the frame so far.
“But after lengthy consideration and discussions with my family, I have decided that I will not be putting myself forward for re-election in October.”
Jon Mitchell, who ran as the Labour candidate for Southland / Queenstown in the last general election, announced on Tuesday he will stand.
Boult said it was time to pass the chains on to someone new, and his only regret was the some of the council’s goals had been derailed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, Mitchell, who has 30 years of experience in local government, economic and community development, and also a background in adventure tourism, says the people of Queenstown deserve a council that is led and governed “transparently, efficiently and effectively”. “They deserve leadership that puts our communities first. As a mayoral candidate, this is what I offer.” The born-and-bred local, who lost out to National’s MP Joseph Mooney in the general election, plans to revamp the council’s committee structure, appoint councillors as spokespeople for issues, and open council workshops to the public and media. His election promises also include promoting economic diversity, ensuring Queenstown and Wanaka Airports are kept in check, governance over the controversial Lakeview project, oversight over the procurement, setting an appropriate council culture, and moving the planned council offices out of the planned Te Manawa on Stanley Street to less expensive land elsewhere.
Candidate Jon Mitchell
Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult
And then a day later, incumbent mayor Jim Boult announced he won’t be seeking a third term. “I have been honoured to have held the office of the Mayor in our wonderful district for two terms and am both proud and humbled by what this council has achieved over those five and a half years,” Boult said.

Cops Pull Over Joyriding Driverless Taxi: ‘Ain’t Nobody in It’ What was supposed to be a routine traffic stop quickly turned bizarre when the car sped away from police. As driverless cars start to take over our deliveries, freight lines, and every other behind-the-wheel human role, it was only a matter of time before they started having awkward run-ins with cops, too. There was a glimpse of what that might look like earlier this month, when a team of San Francisco cops tried pulling over a taxi for driving around at night with its headlights out—only to find there was nobody inside. Then car took part in the time-honored American tradition of the police chase. A video shows a cop standing over a driverless taxi owned by General Motors which was approved to test-launch its driverless taxis down the streets of San Francisco. Stipulations in the “driverless deployment permit” mean that the company can only operate the cars in a driverless capacity between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., which is why the car was seen skulking around at night. But why the car chose to see the sights without its lights on is unclear. The clip starts with one of the cops approaching the robo-taxi, as someone off-camera shouts that there “ain’t nobody in it.” The cop does a quick check to confirm, and start walking back to their own police vehicle. Then the taxi makes a literal run for it, speeding off to the other side of the junction before coming to a stop at the curb. Gizmodo.com
A jump through time – new technique rewinds the age of skin cells by 30 years Research from the Babraham Institute has developed a method to ‘time jump’ human skin cells by 30 years, turning back the ageing clock for cells without losing their specialised function. Work by researchers in the Institute’s Epigenetics research programme has been able to partly restore the function of older cells, as well as rejuvenating the molecular measures of biological age. It could revolutionise regenerative medicine. As we age, our cells’ ability to function declines and the genome accumulates marks of ageing. Regenerative biology aims to repair or replace cells including old ones. One of the most important tools in regenerative biology is the ability to create ‘induced’ stem cells. Barbraham Institute

Airports Clogged with Queues as Travel Rebound Strains Resources Understaffed airports and airlines from Australia to Europe are struggling to cope with a fresh rush of travelers, with long queues and flight disruptions expected to persist. Passengers checking in at Sydney Airport have waited for hours in queues snaking outside terminals. Staff absences are running as high as 50% at Qantas, while the airport’s workforce is little more than half its normal size. The U.K. has also been hit by disruptions and flight cancellations. The aviation industry axed hundreds of thousands of workers to get through the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic. That left airports and airlines short of staff to handle an upswing in travel, while the virus continues to ripple through flight crews and ground workers. Sydney Airport, Australia’s international gateway, has called the combination of factors a “perfect storm.” “We just can’t get staff,” Sydney Airport Chief Executive Officer Geoff Culbert said. “It’s going to be like this for a little while.” Bloomberg

Bus use up with half price fares by Paul Taylor
Passengers in Queenstown and Dunedin have jumped on board since half price bus fares started on April 1. The Government slashed public transport fares and petrol tax to combat spiraling living costs, particularly fuel, which means it costs just $1 to catch an Orbus in Queenstown. In the first week, the number of people using Queenstown’s Orbus increased by 15% both on weekdays and at the weekend. Queenstown ferry is also included in the initiative which ends on June 30, 2022. In Dunedin, the number of passengers on weekday bus trips grew by 8%, but at the weekend it was up 20%. Patronage was measured against the same day the previous week. Transport Manager Doug Rodgers says it is great to see people making the most of the opportunity. “More people used the bus during the first weekend of half price fares on Saturday and Sunday and it’s heartening to see an increase where we do have capacity,“ Rodgers says. Rodgers warned passengers to prepare for higher demand during the morning rush hour. He reiterated that it is unlikely that Otago Regional Council, which runs the services, will be able to provide extra services if buses are full. This will mean that if demand exceeds current capacity, passengers exceeding that capacity will have to wait for a later bus. There will be no extra buses put on. “The ORC has previously highlighted constraints on bus services related to driver illness and isolation due to COVID, a national driver shortage, and in Dunedin, the recent increase in capacity provided for school services. “A key way to alleviate pressure on the network is to spread travel across the day.” The reduced fare will be automatically applied when tagging on with a Bee Card or paying the driver with cash. Cash fares and children’s fares are also reduced by half.

Hope you all had a happy Easter on a perfect Sunday for egg hunting. We always used to have a big hunt in our garden each year and we still like to tease our friend’s son who thought rabbit pooh was some sort of chocolate yumyum. He was perilously close to popping it in his mouth before a bigger child told him only to collect the ones in shiny foil. I wonder if rabbit pooh has any medicinal properties. At least it’s sugar and gluten free. And vegan... and remarkably affordable! If anyone wants some to taste, do contact me. Easter has certainly brought lots of visitors - the Whakatipu Music Festival is proving a massive hit and the Lakes District Museum Autumn Art show is well worth inspecting. There was a great crowd on the opening night and judge Jane Burdon did an excellent job, not just of judging the winners, but also giving short (I do love short!) explanations of why they won. It must have been hard choosing, as there are a lot of very good artists here. All the works are for sale, and the museum gets a cut on each sale, so if you love our lovely museum, show your love with cold, hard cash. Very few small towns have such a brilliant asset and we all need to help keep it alive. Big congratulations to Marie Luise Marris on her 80th birthday. Her daughter Luise had organised a lovely surprise day for her - a trip to Walter Peak on the Earnslaw on a sparkling, still autumn day, with Kate Blomfield doing the singalong on board. If you’ve never been over there for lunch on the singalong cruise, it’s time you did. In the evening, she got another surprise of a cocktail party and I was lucky enough to be invited. Marie Luise had brought the card she and husband David had received for their 60th wedding earlier this year. From the QUEEN!!! I hope my parents don’t find out that she’s now sending these cards - they had their 60th a couple of years ago and didn’t even get so much as a phone call or a text. My father adores QE2. He used to say that if my mother and the monarch were in a building on fire, he would have to save Elizabeth first. Given that we are only going to be celebrating our 20th anniversary this year (as long as we make it to December 31 - I’m often entertaining happy thoughts of murdering my husband) I doubt we’ll survive long enough to get a congratulatory card from Prince Charles - in fact, he prob won’t still be alive in 40 years either, and there’s not nearly as much cachet surrounding Prince Charles, or William, for that matter. For long life, there’s nothing better than yoga. There’s a very special Live Piano yoga class at the events centre on May 1st at 3 pm. Kinga Krupa is playing and if you’ve never been to one, it’s really a beautiful experience. Maria Bradley is the yoga teacher and tickets are $20 including afternoon tea, with all proceeds going to Happiness House. Feel good and do good - everyone’s a winner!!

‘Caring and kind’ tourism leader dies suddenly by Paul Taylor
IN BRIEF
Fatal crash An investigation is underway after a Jacks Point man was killed in a car crash on Good Friday. Tajinder Singh, 27, died in the horrific smash between a ute and a seddan on State Highway 6, Kingston Road, near the turn-off to the upmarket subdivision. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 6pm. A second person was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition.” As part of our enquiries into the circumstances of the crash, we would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the crash, as well as anyone who may have relevant dashcam footage”, a police spokesperson said. Get in touch with Police via 105 and quote event number P050258368.
Queenstown’s total property value soars Queenstown Lakes now has more than $57 billion worth of property. The long-awaited new rating valuations for the district show the total value of property in the district has risen by 50% in the past for years. The valuation, carried out by Quotable Value (QV), show the land value of the 29,895 properties in the district has also increased, up 67% to $35 billion. “It’s primarily been driven by strong demand and low interest rates as well as a greater acceptance for remote workers with a noted increase in demand from Auckland buyers,” QV’s national revaluation manager Tim Gibson said. Property owners will soon receive their updated rating value in the post. They are unlikely to correlate with an equally large increase in rates. If owners don’t agree with their new rating value, they can object before 31 May 2022 on the QV website or council offices.
Queenstown’s community is in mourning after the sudden death of former Destination Queenstown boss Graham Budd. Budd died on Good Friday afternoon while walking in Arrowtown with a friend. The father-of-four was a passionate advocate for the tourism sector and a muchloved figure in the wider Queenstown community too. He was part of the DQ team for 12 years, including eight as chief executive, before leaving in February 2020 to lead Southland development agency, Great South, in Invercargill. DQ Chairman, Richard Thomas, said his contribution to DQ and the industry has been hugely significant. “Graham led the organisation and the DQ team through a period of time when Queenstown underwent many changes. He was always deeply committed to the organisation, the industry and the people he led. “He was a caring and kind leader as well as being very effective in his role.”
Trees for the chop Hazardous trees along Speargrass Flat Road will be felled over the coming weeks. Arborists will remove 29 trees, mostly poplars, following a district-wide survey to identify trees that pose a risk to the public. Issues include decay and cracked stems. QLDC Property and Infrastructure GM Peter Hansby said: “It’s always a difficult decision to remove any tree but when it comes to ensuring the safety of people driving, riding or walking along the road or living in the area, it’s really a no brainer.” Several poplars have come down in high winds in the area in recent years. And back in 2009, Queenstowner Russell Liggett, 57, was killed when a poplar fell on his ute on nearby Lower Shotover Road. Weather dependent, the felling is expected to start on 19 April and take approximately three weeks, with road closures in place.
Water meter trail Queenstown’s council is expanding a smart water meter trial to 270 sites in Luggate this month. But the council is “not currently looking to review how water services are charged” says its infrastructure general manager Peter Hansby. “The purpose of this trial is to collect information around typical water usage in the district, to educate residents about their usage, identify leaks, and better understand the technology on offer.”
Budd represented the district at a national level on the boards of Tourism Industry Aotearoa and Regional Tourism New Zealand, where he was also chair for three years. Southland Mayoral Forum chair and Gore Mayor Tracy Hicks said everyone’s thoughts are with Budd’s family and all the staff of Great South. “We are all shocked at the loss of Graham and it will take some time to come to terms with his death,” Hicks said. “Graham has contributed a huge amount over the relatively short time he was at Great South and he will be sadly missed.” Great South joint stakeholders committee chair and Southland District Mayor Gary Tong said the news “is just awful and we will support Graham’s family and his work team as much as possible. “Graham was so passionate about doing the best by Southland and he and his team have worked so hard over the past two challenging years to support and help our businesses and people across the province. “His death leaves a large hole for us all, both professionally and personally.” Budd was also chairperson of Space Operations NZ and a director of NZ Functional Foods.

Arts+Culture Queenstown’s second-hand bookshop is bigger and brighter by Bethany Rogers
Queenstown’s only second-hand book shop is about to get a lot bigger. Bright Ink mobile bookshop has operated from a converted van for over a year. The brainchild of Annie Buscemi and Natasya Zambri, the pair ran a four-week PledgeMe campaign to raise enough money to buy and convert a Nissan van in late 2020. After launching at the Remarkables Market in mid-February 2021, the Bright Ink book van found another home at Country Lane (26 Hansen Road, Frankton). The Country Lane Collective includes the popular Buzz Stop café and a growing number of quirky shops and services housed in refurbished wooden cabins. It’s here that Natasya and Annie have found a more stable home for the bookshop. “We’ve been operating as a mobile bookshop for the past year and two months, but it’s always been a dream of ours to move into one of the cabins. We’ve been manifesting it!” Explains Natasya.
of LGBTQI+ books, New Zealand literature and non-fiction. Bright Ink has also more than quadrupled its selection of fantasy and sci-fi books, selecting titles based on customer requests and bestsellers at the Bright Ink van. The Bright Ink van houses around 600 books and will continue to rove around Queenstown’s markets. The Bright Ink cabin at Country Lane will open with more than 3,000 books and has room to expand and keep a small storeroom. “I feel almost out of breath because we’ve been running here, there and everywhere in preparation,” laughs Annie, “It’s been really exciting. We got in about 500 new second-hand books last week, and we’ve gone to big books sales in Dunedin and collected more inventory and bookshelves for the shop.
“It’s short notice but we’re here – we’ll be opening our doors for the first time on Tuesday 19th April, 11 am to 4 pm.”
“When we go to book sales we have a list that we’re looking for: categories and specific authors that we get asked about a lot. One of the most fun things about running a bookshop is the mad hunt for books. There’s always something magical that you might find, hidden somewhere that other people didn’t see.”
Bright Ink will share a cabin with their good friends at Treebush Apothecary.
Bright Ink’s new, bigger and brighter shop will be open Tuesdays – Sundays, 11 am – 4 pm.
“We’re looking forward to moving into this space with James [Treebush Apothecary], he’s been a big contributor of brainy ideas to Bright Ink from day one. I know we’re going to grow together […] and he’ll be making his amazing kawakawa balm in-house, which will smell so good!” Natasya adds that Country Lane has expanded over the past few months and though the collective is still quite new, it has huge potential. “Country Lane is growing. It’s in such a good location, in Frankton, close to the airport. We’ve been delighted to see lots of locals discovering us and we’re excited to see tourists come back too.” Natasya and Annie have been preparing for the move by going on a book-buying spree, scouring second-hand book markets across the South Island for gems. They’ve significantly expanded their collection

Whopping $10 million in charitable grants by Paul Taylor
Central Lakes Trust granted over $10 million this past financial year, the largest annual total in its history. Well over 150 groups have received funding in support of services fulfilling the needs of the Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago communities. The latest projects supported include training for air rescue staff, a VHF radio communication network for disaster response, and the inaugural Arrowtown Matariki Lights event. Trust chief executive, Susan Finlay, says: “We grant in a very specific geographical area, [so] $10 million dollars for one year undoubtably has a big impact. “The funding support the Trust offers so many groups goes a long way to enhancing our environment, our people and the opportunities we have within the district.” Just this March funding round, $514,000 was granted, taking the total for the year to $10.18 million.

Some $200,000 of this went to the Lakes District Air Rescue Trust for their Air Rescue Training Programme to ensure mandatory on-going training requirements are met at the Queenstown base. Changes at a Government level in 2018 meant the level of community funding required to keep this service operational increased significantly. Lakes District Air Rescue Trust chair, Jules Tapper, says: “The air rescue helicopter provides a crucial emergency response service in our wider community. “The support of Central Lakes Trust over the years has ensured this can continue uninterrupted.” Ensuring as a district we are adequately equipped to respond and indeed save lives in an emergency response is a focus for the Trust, Finlay says. “A reliable communication network is at the core of an effective emergency response,” says grants manager Mat Begg. Twenty-eight thousand was granted to the whole QLDC and CODC area to assist with the establishment of a reliable VHF radio communication network across our region for use in emergency or disaster events. “These radios will offer substantial benefit to our entire community should an emergency occur.” Coastguard Wanaka Lakes also received $312,000 towards the new Wanaka Marine Rescue Centre Meanwhile Arrowtown is set to light up in June with plans for an event celebrating our country’s new national holiday, Matariki. Arrowtown Charitable Trust‘s, Matthew Quoi, says: “The inaugural Arrowtown Matariki Lights event will weave together visual and auditory storytelling with stunning light displays and performances by local schools, in celebration of Matariki. “We are grateful for the generous support and funding of Central Lakes Trust and other community organisations, without which the event wouldn’t be possible.” Finlay says Trust funding has seen many great other projects get off the ground, some finally come to fruition, and has enabled new services and kept others going. Southern Wellbeing Trust and the Greatest Needs Fund, both supported by the Trust, were set up in response to Covid-19 to help the most vulnerable and most affected. Queenstown Lakes get a new arts and cultural facility; Te Atamira Whakatipu, an initiative developed from Covid response funding and the identified need to relocate many arts and cultural organisations. The Salvation Army’s new community and social wellbeing hub, delayed due to Covid, also received funding. St John received funds towards new ambulances throughout the district. Central Lakes Trust is the largest philanthropic trust per capita in the Southern Hemisphere. Since its inception in 2000 the Trust has grown its asset base from the $155m, bestowed by the Otago Central Electric Power Trust to assets totalling $450m and has distributed more than $118m into a wide range of community projects and services.

Gardening Tips NOW’S A GOOD TIME TO… Autumn is a treasured planting season offering cooler temperatures and more instances of rain. It is a better temperature for gardeners to work in the garden and yet warm enough for plants to get established before winter. Garden Maintenance • Keep weeds out and feed citrus plants. • Prepare your lawn for winter. • Watch out for garden slugs. • Harvest the remaining summer crops. • Prepare garden beds, add compost, potting mix, and some fertiliser. Let’s look into more things to do in the garden in April. Edible Garden Beetroot, silverbeet, brassicas (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, etc) and celery are good to plant at this time of the year. Beetroot is a versatile choice, highly nutritious and also delicious. It can be used in many beautiful dishes or enjoyed on its own. You may also want to try growing peas, generally loved by many and also a good source of nutrients. Many gardeners use the staggered planting technique to ensure that they have a continuous crop throughout winter. Plant vegetable seedlings every 10-14 days so they mature and yield fruits at different times. If you have limited garden bed space, consider planting slower-growing vegetable varieties like Red Cabbage next to fast-growing ones like lettuces. This maximises the valuable garden spaces and allows the gardener to harvest the lettuce leaves as they grow while waiting for the other vegetables to mature. Some gardeners also consider thinning their carrots in autumn. To thin, start removing those that are growing too close to each other. Carrots need to be spaced about 2 cm apart to grow. Pick out the ones that are the size of baby carrots. These are quite sweet and good for roasting or raw snacks. Make sure to firm the soil around the remaining carrot plants. This practice helps reduce carrot flies along with planting carrots next to spring onions and garlic chives. Flower Garden Autumn planting helps improve a garden’s chances of having more colourful blossoms in spring. The soil is still warm for the flower seedlings to get established. It’s a good time to plant pansy, viola, wallflower, stock, alyssum, dianthus and sweet peas. Mix and match perennials and annuals. Ideas for flower tubs, pots: 1. Pots of different sizes with mixed pansies and violas 2. Large pots - place taller plants like stock or carnation in the middle and surround it with shorter plants like pansies
Herb Garden If you have a herb garden, consider moving the basil indoors or inside the greenhouse to protect them from cold snaps. April is the time to plant rocket, thyme and oregano; and, to prune your sage and rosemary. Natives Autumn is natives season. It’s time to plant trees and hedges in order for their roots to settle in and get established before winter kicks in. Akeake and Pittosporum (also Griselinia for warmer regions) are often used to create hedges. In choosing the right plant variety for your hedge, consider the primary purpose of the hedge: shelter, privacy, fencing, decorative border, peace and quiet, etc. Create a map of the area you’d like to cover. Pick a sunny spot as most trees grow best under full sun. If the area you’re considering is partially shaded, choose the right plants that will grow under those conditions. Early autumn is a good time to trim established hedges. Happy gardening! Courtesy,

Council is looking for your feedback on the draft Climate and Biodiversity Plan and the Annual Plan QLDC want to know what you think on two important topics for the district: climate change and its Annual plan. The draft Climate and Biodiversity Plan sets out how the region will respond to climate change and includes a goal to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 44% by 2030. This aligns with international efforts to keep global warming within 1.5 degrees Celsius. One of the ways to achieve this is by aiming for a low-emission and effective transport system, where people have a genuine, affordable alternative to taking the car, be that cycling, on the bus, walking, a scooter, or something else. Ongoing research says the community wants a better public transport service, with only 20% agreeing that public transport met the needs of our community. While Otago Regional Council (ORC) is responsible for operating the public transport system, QLDC provides the infrastructure and influences policy outcomes for residents. The Climate and Biodiversity plan also includes a focus on building and infrastructure. QLDC wants to promote and encourage the transition towards more sustainable building design and construction methods across the district. QLDC can help lead the way through committing to eco-design principles in all new build and refurbishment property projects and focussing on the use of low carbon material selection for our infrastructure projects. Do you agree? Have you say. The draft QLDC Annual Plan for the year which includes priorities and budgets for the next 12 months is also now available for feedback. All the details including a summary consultation document and the submission form can be found at https:// letstalk.qldc.govt.nz. Feedback closes on 25 April 2022.

Applications for the Event Fund are open The event fund aims to support a balanced portfolio of new and returning sporting, community and cultural events both for local residents and to promote the district to visitors. In turn this helps boost the district’s economy and enrich the local experience for its diverse community. QLDC Relationship Manager Arts and Events Jan Maxwell said the grants will go some way to helping the district’s events industry recover from the effects of the pandemic. “Obviously the past couple of years have been extremely tough with many events having to cancel or adapt to meet the necessary restrictions. We’re looking forward to supporting organisers keen to wow audiences and participants as these restrictions ease for Kiwis and our international borders reopen,” she said. Ms Maxwell said there continued to be a focus on sustainability in the application criteria. “We’re particularly keen to see how organisers are addressing issues of waste minimisation and reducing the overall environmental impact of their events.” Applications close at 5.00pm on Friday 29 April with announcements in July. More information is on the Communities page of QLDC’s website.
Speargrass Flat Road trees coming down Council is set to begin removing a number of hazardous trees along Speargrass Flat Road this week. This follows a district-wide risk-based survey to identify trees which pose a high risk to road users due to issues such as decayed and cracked stems. Queenstown Lakes District Council General Manager Property and Infrastructure Peter Hansby said community safety is the highest priority and we all have a part to play in making sure people get home safely. “Trees are a vital part of any community and in this instance offer a stunning backdrop to one of our most picturesque rural roads. It’s always a difficult decision to remove any tree but when it comes to ensuring the safety of people driving, riding or walking along the road or living in the area, it’s really a no brainer,” Mr Hansby said. Most of the 29 trees identified as hazardous along this stretch of road are on Council road reserve and will be removed by Council contractors. The remaining trees are on private property and Council is working directly with landowners to address the issues. Weather dependent, the felling is expected to start on 19 April and take approximately three weeks. Speargrass Flat Road between Domain Road and Lower Shotover Junction will be closed weekdays from 19 April from 8.00am–5.00pm. Resident access will be allowed throughout the closure.

QLDC Libraries Librarian Profile
Lakes Weekly Bulletin and Queenstown Lakes Libraries are profiling our librarians. This month we are profiling George who is a Assistant Librarian at the Frankton Library.
@qldclibraries
Queenstown Lakes District Libraries
Kia Ora! I’m George. I joined Frankton Library in January as a Casual Assistant and have since taken on the position of Assistant Librarian after some gentle encouragement from our awesome team. I don’t know about you, but for me this is called LIVING THE DREAM. I’m from Glasgow in Scotland and came to Queenstown in 2019, B.C. (Before Covid) to spend some time with my sister and her growing family. Most of my time back home was spent wandering around libraries and bookshops and now a good chunk of my working hours is spent sitting at a desk purchasing books online to build our collection. Did I mention LIVING THE DREAM? I also love cake (eating, not making).
undervalued gateway for people of all ages to improve literacy and learning. Also, some of them have explosions. Without a doubt, the best part of my day is engaging with our patrons and improving their library experience as well as hearing all of your suggestions for books we can add to our collection. If you have an idea for a book you want us to buy then I would love to hear from you. Come say hi!
While I’m always looking at expanding our whole collection in all sorts of interesting directions, I am particularly invested in increasing the size and visibility of our LGBTQI+ collections and engaging with the wider needs of that community. I also have a secret agenda (don’t tell anyone) to break down the stigma around comics and graphic novels as being purely for children. I believe graphic novels are a fantastic and If you’re after some reading inspiration, here are some of my top pics of the year so far After Dark by Haruki Murakami
All Murakami is good Murakami but After Dark is particularly accessible for its structure and brevity. A story about two nighthawks who find each other in the wee small hours of a mysterious night in Tokyo. Perfect for David Lynch fans.
Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick
This non-fiction account of ordinary lives in North Korea is my go-to book when I take the freedoms most of us have for granted. A unique body of journalism that reminds us that people living under a terrifying totalitarian regime have the same hopes and dreams we all do.
The Dark Tower series by Stephen King
Long before the multiverse was trendy, Mr. King was already pulling together and crossing over all of his disparate worlds in this massively sprawling sci-fi/fantasy/western epic. I wish you long days and pleasant nights on your road to the tower.
Chernobyl Prayer by Svetlana Alexievich
I read this oral history of the Chernobyl disaster and aftermath during the lockdown in 2020 and was incredibly moved at the adaptability and persistence of the human spirit in the face of huge unprecedented adversity. A great book for some perspective!
Paper Girls by Brian K. Vaughn
A six volume graphic novel series about being a down-on-your-luck misfit in small town America in the 1980s. Also, there is time travel, dinosaurs and aliens!

Parties at the Peak for 75th by Paul Taylor
NZSki has announced a programme of events to celebrate Coronet Peak’s 75th anniversary. From a night ski party and retro straight-ski race through to a gala dinner and alumni après ski function, the programme is jam-packed with nostalgic and ‘good time’ events.

Getting ready to race at Coronet Peak, back in the 1950s
It runs from August 17-21, 2022, at the Queenstown skifield, which is New Zealand’s first commercial ski field. Coronet Peak Ski Area Manager Nigel Kerr says: “It’s a great programme, with a variety of events, which will appeal to all ages who claim Coronet Peak as their home mountain. “Our goal is to bring our community together to celebrate something we all know and love.” The festivities kick off on Wednesday, August 17, with roots reggae band Katchafire, a night ski party and fireworks display. Stories of Queenstown’s mountain will be shared at a ticketed gala and dinner through live interviews, storytelling, photos and footage. For the many staff who have donned Coronet Peak uniform throughout the years, a special alumni après ski event will also be hosted – open to anyone who has worked at the Peak throughout the years. And it wouldn’t be an anniversary celebration without the appearance of a retro day and the chance to dust off straight skis to be used in a race. “The straight ski race is going to be a challenge for all those who have forgotten just how much strength and skill it takes to turn those old planks - a truly retro moment,” Kerr says. The iconic ‘Dash for Cash’ event makes a return, a staple Peak event from the 90s. It was traditionally a ‘no-rules race’ where competitors were able to do anything they wanted, to complete an on-mountain course and win $1000. FAE ROBERTSON
FAE ON THE FRONTLINE She’s been the bright and jovial face of tourism in Queenstown for some 55 years, selling the entire country’s tourism offerings in her heyday, while leading and running a myriad of community organisations on the side. It’s all in a day’s work for long-time Queenstown resident Fae Robertson, now 78 - still a woman who gets things done, all with a great positive attitude and willing smile. Still working two days a week at Queenstown’s i–SITE Visitor Information Centre, she’s affectionately known as ‘Nana Fae’ to the many staff and local tourism operators. Fae’s frontline tourism career began at the tender age of 15, when she was desperate to leave Queenstown District High School – quite a contrast to the Invercargill girl’s convent school that she’d been attending before. “My stepfather was a joiner and got a job with Queenstown Joinery so we moved up from Invercargill in 1957 when I was 14,” recalls Fae. On her first day at her Queenstown school Fae waited politely in the corridor for the teacher to arrive, as was custom at St Catherine’s Convent School, while all the other kids played hijinks in the classroom. “Then this blonde bombshell with black horn rimmed glasses whisked past, opened the wooden desk and slammed it a few times, calling out ‘Shut up, you lot!’” says Fae. “There were 20 boys and five girls in my class and I stood up when I addressed the teacher, which the boys thought was hilarious. I moved out of the doorway to let her past for morning tea break and all the boys rushed through, bowling me over. It was quite a shock.”
and motels, and as a housekeeper. “I did the lunches, baking and cooking while my older brother had a paper run and Hannah’s Shoe Shop run. We were a team.” It was during this time Fae says she learned to be resourceful, resilient, and to give, and help others. “Mum was always baking for neighbours, having kids to stay. She gave us a happy heart.” Fae would help her mother unpick knitted garments donated to them and knit them into new clothing for her and her brothers. Her mum even served the Royal Table during the Queen’s visit to Invercargill, balancing a tray on her disabled hand. It’s Fae’s motto to ‘say yes’ when offered any opportunity and that’s opened a myriad of doors. Instead of lounging at the lake in her Tourist Bureau holidays, at 16 she was paid to grade operators around New Zealand, going on bus tours, sightseeing and inspecting government hotels. “We had posh meals, and I soon knew New Zealand from the inside out. I could sell anything.” That saw her seconded by the government to Australia to sell the country’s tourism offerings. By now 23 and married to long-time local fire chief Bob Robertson with two young kids, Fae stayed for three weeks at the New Zealand High Commission in Melbourne talking to Australians about New Zealand and selling trip vouchers. “I was taken out to dinner every night and picked up and dropped off in a government limousine with the New Zealand flag flying on it.” Fae hit the big city shops, dressing up to the nines.
Her mother wouldn’t let her work full-time at her after school bakery job, so Fae took on an apprenticeship as a travel consultant with the then Government Tourist Bureau. She was 15 when she rocked up for her first day with an office of government workers representing various departments. “We all had a desk each and we were all together in one space in the old Railways office by the Earnslaw Wharf – the Bureau, NZ Railways, Internal Affairs and Fisheries. When you stepped up to the front office you didn’t know what to expect – Farmer Brown wanting to bring sheep up from the Routeburn on the Earnslaw, someone wanting a fishing licence, or a visitor booking a night at THC Hotel in Milford,” she says. “They all smoked like chimneys in the office. I’d be sent out weekly to collect the freight money from businesses.” At 15, Fae politely outsmarted prankster Mr Couling who sent her to buy glass head nails. “My father was a joiner and I told him you don’t use nails on that job.” Former Tourism Minister and mayor of Queenstown Warren Cooper’s dad was the local McBride’s Hotel publican and on Fae’s freight money collection rounds. A rather gruff, tongue in cheek man with a wooden leg, Mr Cooper was initially a bit daunting but Fae says they eventually became good friends.
Fae, during the early 1960s, as winning Queenstown Centennial Princess, aged 19. Sponsored by the local indoor basketball club, she took the other two princesses, Patricia Uren (former mayoress Trish Davies) and Valmai Hansen, on her three night prize to Hermitage Mount Cook.
Her own father left home in Invercargill when she was quite young and in the ensuing five years Fae and her three brothers had to pull together to help her hard working Irish-born mum survive. Despite a disability in her hand, her Mum worked hard, waitressing at the racecourse, cleaning hotels

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN
Cold chain failure under spotlight by Paul Taylor
Southern DHB has been unable to contact 151 people given the Pfizer vaccine stored at the incorrect temperature in Queenstown. That’s 10% of the 1576 people who were administered the doses from a mobile clinic, run by Engage Safety in December and January. Over 62% of people affected have had a replacement dose, while 4% have deferred their replacement dose due to Covid-19 infection or other medical or logistical reasons, like travel. Most of the remaining people (16%) intend to have their vaccination or have yet to decide and 7% have declined the replacement vaccination. “Of the 151 people (10%) whom SDHB has not yet been able to speak with, emails, texts and letters have been sent,” a SDHB spokesperson says. “We are continuing attempts to contact this group by phone. The Southern DHB have become aware that for a small number of people contact details have changed, therefore there will be people who have not received sufficient information regarding this incident and their need for a replacement dose. “ An independent three-person review team from health assessment specialists The DAA Group has been appointed to undertake the investigation into the cold chain failure event , discovered on March 2, 2022. They will use tracer methodology, root cause analysis, review of key documents, interviews, and review of relevant environments. The review report will be provided to the SDHB, at the end of April 2022. There is no risk of harm to individuals that have received a vaccine stored at an incorrect temperature. However, in these circumstances the vaccine is not considered to be potent nor to produce a reliable level of immunity. “We would like to reassure people in the area that this was an isolated incident, and the affected provider has ceased all vaccination activity pending the outcome of a full investigation.”

QUEENSTOWN RSA’S ANZAC SERVICE Dawn Service, 6,30am, Memorial Gates (Marine Parade), Queenstown. The Dawn Service will be followed by a march to the Memorial Hall where wreaths will be laid.
When it came to pay the $400 she owed at duty free a staff member piped up: ‘No, she arrived on the New Zealand limousine. She doesn’t have to pay.’ “So I shot back in and bought perfume and make-up too,” grins Fae. “I was dressed to kill when I got home.” It was just over 30 years ago when the Bureau, by then the New Zealand Tourism Publicity Department, was sold to a Christchurch Guthrie’s Travel family consortium. Throughout her life she’s served on numerous local committees, taught public speaking around the country, studied, and performed and helped at Showbiz productions. Fae’s role leading the Catholic Women’s League, which has a voice on the UN, took her right to the top as international secretary for four years from 2005 during which time she attended a 19-day conference in Washington D.C. “I’ve had some incredible experiences. If I’m asked I always say ‘yes’. Never say you can’t. My mother said, ‘Can’t just means won’t.’” For more than 20 years she’s been the warm, friendly chairperson face of Victim Support – a strong advocate at national level ensuring Queenstown is recognised for its unique status, and driving the annual Peony Drive fundraiser. Her business, Up Front Training, teaching public speaking, body language and brain gym, a skill she’s taught since the mid-70s, has been invaluable. She’s even studied pastoral ministry, assisting the local priest for nine years. All of these skills now ensure she’s well equipped as a local celebrant, officiating at weddings and funerals – unfortunately, some for those far too young. Years volunteering for Victim Support have developed a special sensitivity and intuition, while her public speaking tricks come in handy when things go awry. “I’ve had a condition which makes one eyelid drop down suddenly sometimes,” says Fae. “I try to behave in church,” she grins, “but I was officiating for a Communion Eucharist recently and the bright altar lights affect my eye.” She was offering Communion to a male parishioner in front of her and had picked up the chalice and bread to say reverently, ‘This is the body of Christ’. “Just as I went to say it my bad eyelid dropped down like I was winking at the guy!” she laughs. “I got out and said, ‘Oh, dear Lord! You could’ve left my lid up until I got the line out.” However, just like the public speaking pro that she is, Fae had managed to lower her head just in time. “With public speaking, it’s how you get out of it that’s the main craft. Nobody need ever know.”
