Are we on the right road?

I’m not sure I get the whole arterial roads project. Work began in earnest on stage one - linking Frankton Road to Gorge Road via Melbourne St and Henry St - last week, and we can expect years of traffic jams as a result. The original budget was $65.9 million, with $50m coming from Jacinda’s Shovel Ready Funding. But, as you could probably have guessed, that’s already blown out to $86.6m, including $1.46m for a massive retaining wall. And that uplift is all being covered by the council, who quietly approved changes to the Ten-Year Plan back at a full council meeting in October without much public discussion or debate. Now council budgets are a bit of a snore-fest and to be honest the detailed line-by-line financial breakdown may as well be written in Klingon, such is my grasp of numbers. What I do know is the council’s contribution is now $37m-ish. That’s my council rates for the next 12,333 years. For what? I get that the vision is to take the traffic off Stanley St where there will be a huge new public transport interchange. But couldn’t that be incorporated into the Project Manawa, the public / private project on the Ballarat St block? Stanley St is pretty wide, with parking down one side for much of it. Couldn’t we just stick in a bus lane up the hill between Ballarat St and Melbourne St? It just seems to be huge amount of money. You can applaud the council for landing $50m from Government, but at the end of the day that’s public money too. And this is just stage one. How much will it cost when stage two and three are complete? $300m? You could use that money to make public transport free. That would be a statement of intent to tackle climate change, encourage people to leave their car at home, or just not own one at all. No loading Bee Cards, no tagging on, just travel for free. Maybe buses are cheap enough already, though. Usually just $2, trips are now only $1 for the next three months, after the Government halved the price of all public transport in response to spiraling living costs. What can you buy for a dollar these days? You could travel into town and back out again for a working week for the price of a pint of craft beer. Much better would be to use the money to improve the capacity of the service, through partnership with Otago Regional Council. Orbus bosses are already warning there might not be enough space at peak times over the coming months, due to driver shortages and the impact of Omicron. Or what about a fleet of electric buses? They cost $850,000 each, so instead of stage one, we could have bought 100. It’s too late now, but stages two and three need a rethink. Paul Taylor - Queenstown Media Group

Pride and joy by Paul Taylor

A new day facility for people with disabilities is a “big heart” at the centre of the Queenstown Lakes community, says Impact100 Wakatipu founder Kristen Holtzman.

Parent Caroline Hutchinson, whose 20-year-old son Amos Van Asch is in his final year at Wakatipu High School, said there was a huge gap in Queenstown before the centre.

Living Options Charitable Trust received $100,000 from the philanthropic women’s organisation for the Arrowtown centre, which opened late last year.

“The options for us were to leave town, or for Amos to leave town and to leave us, or to travel to Alexandra, which in winter is not the best idea.

Located on Narin Street, behind beautiful ornate wrought iron gates, it provides a hub for people with intellectual disabilities to spend time with their carers. Living Options founder Alison Wildey and her daughter Olivia, who run a similar centre in Alexandra, have been the driving force behind the Tom Pryde Centre, named after the trust’s long-serving former chair. Impact100 Wakatipu members were invited along to the centre last Wednesday, to see what the first major grant they’ve bestowed has helped to build. “Olivia and Alison, you have created a big heart in this community right here at this location,” Holtzman said.

“What you guys have supported, through Alison and Olivia here, is absolutely extraordinary because it does create pathway for our kids and I feel quite emotional about it.” Joan Kiernan, Chair of the Impact100 Grants Committee said the 2022 sign up for members is now open, and they are hopeful to match or even better last year’s $200,000 in grants that were donated to local charities. The full amount available for this year will be announced in May, with the last day for donations on 30 April. She encouraged local charities to start thinking about transformational projects they are planning and to check the grant application timelines which are now on their website at www.impact100wakatipu.org

“You are amazing women and this is what your passion has accomplished. Queenstown needed something like this. There was a gap. And I’m so happy that this was able to happen.” Ten local families are supported by facility, which occupies a former crib leased from Queenstown Lakes District Council for the peppercorn sum of $1 per year. Also funded by the Hugo Charitable Trust and private donations from local families, the centre features a lounge, a kitchen, a room for art and music therapy complete with an array of instruments, and a sleepover space for staff. Funds have also allowed for a psychotherapist to be employed, with swimming and other activities planned once COVID restrictions are lifted. Christchurch-based Lightning Construction completed the fit-out job in four months, with Remarkables Labour donating a labourer for the whole project, and subcontractors donating time and some materials.

The kitchen and lounge

And the Wakatipu Garden Club has a planting plan ready to go to complete the gardens. Even the feature mailbox has been donated, crafted by a local family. Olivia Wildey said she would have been delighted with the $5000 runnerup funding when she submitted the application for the annual grant round. “When we started in the Whakatipu basin, we had no base,” she said. “We knew every park bench suitable for a lunch break, and every single public toilet. Now we have the safety and comfort of the Tom Pryde Centre.” Wildey said the trust, Impact100 and other funders had worked together to turn a “dark and freezing” old crib into a “safe, accessible and calming space for the people in the Whakatipu who have a disability”. “Families are now secure and knowledge that there is a place in the community for their family member.”

Arts+Culture Music festival opens up opportunities for local musicians by Bethany Rogers

The Whakatipu Music Festival returns this Easter weekend (12 – 18 April) with a top-notch range of classic, jazz and taonga pūoro performances. There are free and ticketed events to performances, talks, open workshops and there are opportunities for local musicians to get involved. The festival is a stand-in for the popular Michael Hill Violin Competition, which sees some of the world’s top young violinists compete to win a career-launching prize package valued at over $100,000. With international borders closed, the 2021 violin competition couldn’t go ahead, so the Whakatipu Music Festival was introduced to showcase and foster Aotearoa’s leading musical talent. Brought to life by a local workforce, the festival is designed to stimulate and support Queenstown’s arts, culture and events scene. World-class New Zealand musicians like Madeleine Pierard (soprano), Robin Wilson (violin), Stephen de Pledge (piano), and the Tararua contemporary taonga pūoro quartet will take the stage. They’ll be joined by local musicians and ensembles.

This year, local singing students will be performing pieces from West Side Story. “It’s not been easy, because everybody has been getting sick. We are wrought with the most interesting rehearsal situations […] but we will be going ahead with a small group of beautiful singers.” There’ll be two Community Showcase sessions over the weekend (16th and 17th April). Whakatipu High School students will perform a preview of their production of Footloose alongside a full orchestra.

“The Whakatipu Music Festival isn’t a competition, it’s more of a festival so that we can highlight the fabulous expertise of classical musicians that we have here,” explains Festival Community Music Consultant Margaret O’Hanlon.

Wasabi, Queenstown’s Japanese choir, will also perform traditional Japanese music: “They’re so beautiful,” says Margaret, “and where else are you going to be able to see something like that? This is the advantage of living in this community, it’s so diverse and multi-cultural. We’re lucky to be able to hear traditional music and have musical experts from many different cultures here.”

“At last year’s festival, they decided to open up the floor to community musicians and music that’s wider than just classical to do anything on an acoustic level that highlights musicianship.”

The community is also invited to get involved in a specially-written ensemble piece that will be part of the festival’s grand finale on Easter Monday.

For the community aspect of the festival, Margaret is working alongside local musicians and teachers such as Kinga Krupa, Alison Price and Emma Wilson.

Colour in Twilight is a celebration of Autumn in Central Otago. The piece was commissioned by the festival and written by composer Lucy Mulgan. The music has been specially written with easy, intermediate and advanced parts.

Clarinetist Stefenie Pickston

Musicians of all ages, abilities, instruments and voices are invited to register online, download the music from the festival website (whakatipumusicfestival.co.nz) and join in. A morning dress rehearsal will be followed by a performance in the afternoon – it’ll be the first time the music is performed. “It’s going to be a wonderful long weekend,” says Margaret, “What being able to perform together in this festival does is create a goal for these groups and individuals. It gives them an opportunity to perfect what they’re doing because you have to get together and you have to practice. “It is a beautiful way to actively promote the advancement of music in our community.” More information is available on the festival website. Tickets are on sale via Eventfinda.

RealNZ rings in the changes by Paul Taylor

Queenstown-based tourism giant RealNZ has announced a huge investment from a group of Kiwi investors, including Xero founder Rod Drury. The company, which operates the TSS Earnslaw, Queenstown Jet, Cardrona Alpine Resort, Treble Cone Ski Area, International Antarctic Centre, and Doubtful Sound and Milford Sound cruises, hasn’t put a figure on the deal but describes it as “one of the largest private capital raises for the New Zealand tourism industry”. The move will see Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult step down as chairman and leave the board, a position which has seen people question his impartiality. Milford Asset Management, Rod Drury, Jonty Edgar, Martin Dippie, and Brendan Lindsay have joined RealNZ, which is headed up by former Tourism New Zealand boss Stephen England-Hall. England-Hall says the funds will be used to “organically grow RealNZ’s business, invest in technology, and consider adding other tourism assets to RealNZ’s brand umbrella”. “We are on a mission to accelerate the shift to sustainable tourism and this will help us do that.” The investment coincides with the announcement of New Zealand’s staged border reopening, a much-needed invigoration for the country’s tourism industry.

England-Hall says Drury’s commitment to investment in the south, as well as his expertise in technology, made him a natural fit for a business in the midst of a digital transformation. Dippie’s been brought on board for his extensive retail and property knowledge, including as chair of the Mitre 10 group, Lindsay for his business acumen from investments in a number of areas of the NZ economy, and Edgar for his capital markets expertise, England-Hall adds.

Stephen England-Hall

Founded by Les and Olive, Lady Hutchins, RealNZ has been family-owned since the 1950s. The family, who have also invested in this equity raise, will retain a majority shareholding in the business.

He acknowledged the outgoing board members, particularly Jim Boult and Sue Sheldon, “who have given incredible guidance throughout the capital raise process, and for their generous support through these challenging times”.

Milford Asset Management, which is investing through one of its private equity funds, will be the second largest shareholder.

“This investment signals the start of the next chapter of RealNZ and I know they will all be proud to see where this journey takes our business net.”

John Johnston says: “Milford is delighted to support a business that has iconic assets and great people, and that we believe has a bright future as it navigates out of the Covid pandemic.”

Boult says the past 12 months have been a period of significant change for the company, following England-Hall’s appointment.

Drury, meanwhile, said he is proud to come on board with a business “that is leading the way in sustainable tourism, protecting these intergenerational assets for our children and theirs.”

That’s seen a “fresh strategy, group-wide reorganisation, rebranding and common purpose all implemented”, Boult says, which has helped attract “some of New Zealand’s leading investors and set RealNZ on a path to a stronger future”.

Cybersecurity researchers trace Lapsus$ attacks to a teenager from England A hacking group calling itself Lapsus$ recently made waves by releasing sources codes it claimed to have stolen from Microsoft and Okta. Now, cybersecurity researchers investigating the attacks have traced them to a 16-year-old living with his mother near Oxford, England, according to Bloomberg. While the researchers have identified seven accounts associated with the hacking group — including one traced to another teenager in Brazil — they believe the teenager from England is the mastermind and is behind some of the major Lapsus$ hacks. However, they weren’t able to connect the teen to all the attacks the group carried out. Unlike cyberattacks that install malicious software or lock systems until ransoms are paid, the group has focused on extortion, stealing intellectual property, and threatening public release unless demands are met. Known targets have included Microsoft, Nvidia, Samsung, Vodafone, and others. The group appears to gain initial access via soft targets—actively recruiting employees with inside access, roles which it advertises on its 45,000-personstrong Telegram channel. Engadget

Microplastics found in human blood for first time Microplastic pollution has been detected in human blood for the first time, with scientists finding the tiny particles in almost 80% of the people tested. The discovery shows the particles can travel around the body and may lodge in organs. The impact on health is as yet unknown. But researchers are concerned as microplastics cause damage to human cells in the laboratory and air pollution particles are already known to enter the body and cause millions of early deaths a year. Huge amounts of plastic waste are dumped in the environment and microplastics now contaminate the entire planet, from the summit of Mount Everest to the deepest oceans. People were already known to consume the tiny particles via food and water as well as breathing them in, and they have been found in the faeces of babies and adults. The scientists analysed blood samples from 22 anonymous donors, all healthy adults and found plastic particles in 17. Half the samples contained PET plastic, which is commonly used in drinks bottles, while a third contained polystyrene, used for packaging food and other products. A quarter of the blood samples contained polyethylene, from which plastic carrier bags are made. The Guardian

Black business ownership is higher than pre-pandemic. Women are driving that growth Black business ownership in America is 30% higher than pre-pandemic levels and women are driving most of that growth. After the hugely successful inaugural event in 2019, the biennial awards were due to be presented at a gala dinner in September 2021. But that was postponed until November due to Covid restrictions, and then to May. Now the Foundation has pushed back the date one more time, to 24 September, 2022. “We’re back to our original spot of September – just one year out”, organiser Simon Green says. It is hoped the new date will allow the Foundation to bring the community together and not only celebrate all those who give in the Wakatipu, but also a return to ‘business as usual’ for the region. “We were well underway with our preparations, we’ve got our finalists and we’ve even got our trophies,” Green adds. “But while we know Queenstown is in dire need of a good party, the event climate is still just too uncertain to commit now to running the event in May as planned.” With over half of the 600 tickets already sold and, to date, no one willing to relinquish their tickets, organisers are confident that come 24 September the Queenstown Events Centre will be buzzing once again. The Gala is about shining the light on our community heroes. Mayor Jim Boult will also be making a special acknowledgement of those directly involved in the Covid response effort. “It’s a great opportunity for people to catch up, reflect, celebrate and have a bit of a party – which right now we need as a community.” After this event, the next Gala will be in 2024. “We’re sticking to our ‘slice of heaven’ theme and we’ve got a cracking line up of 100% kiwi music from start to finish,” Green says. “So, there will be plenty of singing along and no doubt the dance floor will be packed once the formalities are over.”

by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

Clocks back means MUCH longer days - it’s blissful not wasting a minute of this glorious autumn. On Saturday morning, I tootled along to Thurlby Domain to see lots of classic and vintage cars (and their vintage owners) all sparkling among the trees and ruins. The Miners’ Band was in full noise cheering up an already cheerful crowd, and as they set off with engines throbbing and smoke pouring out, it was lovely to see a huge Ukrainian flag being used to give the cue to set off. I also heard about the Wonderwall of support for Ukraine at the Dubai Expo - there are three floors of walls absolutely covered in thousands and thousands of post-it notes showing solidarity with Ukraine - they are so brave and it’s great that most of the world know about, and oppose Putin’s war. We were all in tears at an event at Arrowtown’s Living Options earlier this week. This group was the first to be awarded the $100,000 grant from Impact100, and it is so exciting seeing how the money has been used to transform what is politely known as a “doer-upper” (a dump!) into a cosy, warm and happy space for people in the Wakatipu with intellectual disabilities. One of the mothers spoke of the huge relief at having a safe place where her adult son could go and have fun with friends while she can have some much needed time out for herself. Because the big grant got so much publicity, other philanthropic groups became aware of Living Options as well. The Hugo Charitable Trust stepped up with an equivalent amount, and there have been donations of wonderful musical instruments, building supplies, labour and so much more. Philanthropy is a very good sort of virusgenerous people spread generosity and we all benefit from it. The house is named the Tom Pryde Centre, and Tom Pryde is famous for his many years of massive efforts and contributions to this community - from cycle trails and the Motutapu event, surf lifesaving, rugby, wildlife centres and, of course Living Options. No wonder he’s been showered in awards at all levels. Three cheers for this superman. My mother got a standing ovation at golf on Friday - she’s 84 and won the Peregrine tournament. She was very chuffed about it and our whole family is quite shocked - I can’t play any sports and even running or catching a ball are beyond my abilities. Maybe when I’m 84 I’ll take up rugby or something and be a superstar. Actually I am already an international celebrity. Paul Taylor’s mum in England sent a message to the editor saying she likes reading my column. I am always fishing for compliments and that’s been my only catch so far. I won’t be catching flu - you can go and get the free flu vaccine at loads of places locally now. My friend in Sydney was very sick for nearly 3 weeks, and after multiple negative Covid tests, they finally worked out it was the flu. It’s a particularly nasty one, so do trot along for a shot. A propos of nasty things, the rats on our property are in for a very nasty shock. I’ve stocked up on rat poison blocks and am busy ruining their happiness as fast as I can. I imagine that our local rodents see me more as a Putin than a philanthropist. Yikes!

Bookings required for Pigeon Island hut

Local 1: Would it help if we changed the description to “Low miles Funding Vessel”? Local 2: Seems to work... and we advertise in Spanish?

Pigeon Island / Wāwāhi Waka on Lake Whakatipu

Visitors to Pigeon Island / Wāwāhi Waka on Lake Whakatipu who wish to stay in the hut overnight now need to book online in advance with Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC). The Pigeon Island Hut is owned and maintained jointly by the council and the Wakatipu Islands Reforestation Trust (WIRF). It remains unlocked and free to use, and the new booking system does not apply to the outdoor camping area. QLDC Facilities Manager Morgan Govender said the move to bookings provides an opportunity for the council to share important information with visitors that will help them plan their stay, stay safe and protect the flora and fauna of the island. Bookings will be on a first come, first served basis. There’s more info on the council website.

Give, grow, connect Student Volunteer Week 2022 runs from April 4-10, celebrating the impact students make through volunteering. Gillian White, of Volunteer South, says there are thousands of high-school and university students who ‘give, grow, and connect’ through volunteering. “Wakatipu High School is keen to offer volunteering on teacher-only days, alongside their website ‘Give Time’ that was set up in 2020 with the aim of easily connecting students to organisations in the area.” Give.Grow.Connect. is the theme of #SVW2022 and the nationwide campaign is being driven by Volunteering New Zealand.

That’s a wrap! Film Queenstown Lakes has launched a directory to help film, television, and commercial productions minimise and manage their waste in the district. The directory, And, cut…! offers a quick reference to a variety of local businesses and waste-related organisations that provide sustainable waste solutions and services. It is designed specifically for the film industry, which often has unique waste and recycling requirements, such as paint, cars, and old clothes. It was made by council’s in-house film office, Film Queenstown Lakes, its waste minimisation team, and representatives from the local film industry.

Let there be light! by Paul Taylor

LUMA may be cancelled but downtown Queenstown will still light up for Queen’s Birthday weekend.

The charitable trust behind the hugely popular annual lights and arts extravaganza, which drew 60,000 people into Queenstown Gardens last June, has announced its ‘plan b’. It plans to light up the laneways in the CBD, Cow Lane, Searle Lane and Church Lane, and also other areas of the town centre and the waterfront. LUMA Chairman Duncan Forsyth says the aim is to bring people back into town, get them mingling and supporting local businesses while enjoying the illuminations. “We’ve been beavering away in the background to come up with some ideas,” Forsyth says. “We want to bring a festival-like atmosphere to the town centre, but in a safe way. “Entice people to come into town and support our local hospo scene which has had it tough. Stop in at the cafes, pop into the pub for a pint or grab a bite to eat before coming to see our installations.”

LAKES WEEKLY POLL LWB regularly polls locals on issues affecting our region. This weeks responses are below.

Are you going away for Easter this year? Yes 56% | No 22% | Unsure 22% With the weeks ticking down until set up would begin, the trust took the decision to cancel to safeguard the financial future of the event. The Government has since eased the restrictions, but the decision came too late for the LUMA 2022. LUMIFY Laneways and LUMIFY Downtown will instead be held this year, under the LUMIFY umbrella, which was first introduced when LUMA Queenstown 2020 was cancelled due to the first lockdown.

Should some of the infrastructure dollars be diverted to permanently make local buses travel free?

Yes 53% | No 32% | Unsure 15%

“We are lucky to have a wealth of talent within our LUMA community and have artists lined up to contribute,” Forsyth says. “The team will be lighting up facades of buildings, projection mapping, adding festoon lighting and setting up mini pop-up events. And it doesn’t stop at lighting; several street performers and dance troops are also getting involved.’’

Have you or do you know someone with Covid at present?

Yes 83% | No 15% | Unsure 2%

Forsyth says some of the creative installations will hopefully remain after the long weekend. LUMIFY will signal the start of winter and aims to create a positive atmosphere in town, he adds. The LUMA crew have also again been working with schools and the wider community. These School projects will be on display in both Queenstown and Wanaka.

Have you used your mobile while driving (not handsfree) in the last week?

Yes 25% | No 67% | Unsure 8%

“We hope our Queenstown community brings LUMIFY home, as they did in 2020, and light up their houses, their back-yards, their driveways, their cars. “This is about grassroots contribution and we are pretty excited about what our community can do when given the challenge.”

Do you think Will Smith was out of line for slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars this week?

Businesses are also being encouraged to get stuck in and support the initiative. A number are already keen and ideas include coloured mocktails, funky street food, vibrant shop windows and colourful staff outfits.

Yes 63% | No 21% | Unsure 16%

Forsyth took the opportunity to thank funders. “When we cancelled LUMA we looked at a number of options and opportunities as to how we could still do something for our community but LUMIFY is only made possible through the loyal and generous support of our funders and the local community.”

Take a look at what’s coming by Paul Taylor

Waka Kotahi has released the first images of two new Queenstown intersections. The BP Frankton roundabout and the Howards Drive turnoff from State Highway 6 Ladies Mile, near Lake Hayes Estate, are being remodelled as part of $115 million worth of work to improve the SH6 corridor. In Frankton, the roundabout will be replaced with a huge new traffic light intersection, with priority bus lanes and double-lane roads. At Howards Drive, the white-knuckle turnoff and exit will change to a roundabout, similar to the one about 700-metres further along Ladies Mile connecting to Stalker Rd and Lower Shotover Rd.

Queenstown works include new bus lanes on SH6, new priority bus measures on SH6A (between BP roundabout and Queenstown Airport), improved walking and cycling routes, and improvements to Frankton’s bus hub.

The aim is a 15% reduction in emissions by 2048. Work will begin later this year and will take about three years to complete.

Waka Kotahi (NZ Transport Agency), Queenstown Lakes District Council and four design and construction companies, Beca, WSP, Downer New Zealand and Fulton Hogan are working together on the project, through the Kā Huanui a Tāhuna alliance.

Blair and his Queenstown mum, Pauline Vining

Blair out training with his two favourite supporters – daughters, Lily (left) and Della-May

by Sue Fea

NOT GOING DOWN WITHOUT A FIGHT

Ask Blair Vining’s Queenstown family if they’d ever imagined their unassuming Blair - the least likely of them all - would become a national icon and they still can’t believe it. However, this Southland farmer - happiest driving his tractor around the paddocks and avoiding the limelight, Blair used his own heart-breaking cancer diagnosis to help others. Sadly, he passed away in October, 2019, a year later, aged just 39, but the legacy of his high-profile bureaucratic battle lives on in the $6.5 million Southland Charity Hospital, now under construction. Widow Melissa Vining now carries the flag for his fight on behalf of him and their two teenage daughters. In a miraculous outpouring of generosity from around New Zealand and overseas, Melissa, now on the Charity Hospital board, says they’ve already raised more than $4 million through donations and fundraising to pay for it. They’re hoping the hospital, which will initially offer free colonoscopies, other diagnostic procedures and day surgery to patients from anywhere in the Southern District Health Board region, all over Otago and Southland, will open late this year. Selflessly surrendering his final months with his own family, Blair bravely battled through extreme illness to front up on television, radio and for newspaper interviews nationwide to fight for faster cancer diagnosis for patients. Diagnosed in October, 2018, with serious bowel cancer and told he had six to eight weeks to live, Blair’s mum Pauline Vining, of Lower Shotover, says he poured his rapidly depleting energy into the plight of those faced with risking their lives waiting months for colonoscopies. Of all of her three kids, including long-time Queenstown entertainer and comedian Shaun Vining, Blair always held back from the public eye. “The only time he spoke in public was after a rugby game and he would thank the team and ‘the ladies in the kitchen’,” says Pauline. He wanted so much to make things better for those who, unlike him, didn’t have medical insurance, even though for Blair his diagnosis would be too late. He devoted his last days to try and make it better for everyone else in New Zealand.

“He was the most laid back person. Shaun used to say if he was any more laid back he would fall over.” However, what he saw deeply saddened him. Blair instead spent the next 10 months fighting for those coming behind him to have equal access to good cancer care and outcomes, no matter where they lived or what they could afford. “He decided that while he could access a colonoscopy through his insurance, plenty of others couldn’t and the wait times were unacceptable,” says Pauline, who with Blair’s dad, and husband, Barry, is moving to Cambridge this winter. Melissa got busy, posting Blair’s fight on Facebook – ‘Blair’s Epic Journey’, and the movement quickly gained traction. So many people contacted the family saying they knew people going through the same thing. “Once people heard, they were like moths to a flame,” says Pauline. Her quietest son was soon face to face with the Prime Minister, addressing Parliamentarians and doing countless interviews. “He even had Jacinda Ardern look him in the eye and tell him the government was going to do things better,” says Pauline. His proud mum says their son took the bull by the horns and decided, ‘I’m going to make this better’, she says. He also threw his weight behind what is now the new Cancer Control Agency. Blair organised what was understood to be New Zealand’s largest ever petition, attracting 140,000 signatures in just six weeks. “He used to say it’s a post code lottery with Southlanders at the bottom of the pile, when it came to waiting lists,” says Pauline. His fortitude in the end was remarkable. She recalls him being violently ill in the bathroom just before going into a TV studio for an interview. “We were blown away by his bravery, but he didn’t see it that way,” she says. “He knew he was dying in the end, but he decided he wasn’t going out without a fight.” That fight has been taken up by his widow and family. Melissa now works tirelessly to bring his dream to fruition. “We’ve had such amazing support from all over but the Wakatipu community has been amazing,” she says. Several schools have got right behind

Blair on the rugby field, ticking off the Bucket List playing the game he loved

dress-up day fundraisers, and tourism operators like Air Milford donated a portion of tickets on special Queenstown to Invercargill flights last year. Arrowtown Lifestyle Village has also held fundraising events. The latest big fundraiser for the hospital is its Mustang Prize Draw Lottery to win a brand new Ford Mustang, something that Melissa says would’ve made her late husband smile. Only launched on February 26 -the couple’s wedding anniversary, they’d already sold 1426 of the 4000 $100 tickets in the raffle by late March. It will be drawn on Blair’s birthday – May 13. The Invercargill Licensing Trust donated the land and buildings for the Charity Hospital, wiping $1 million off the fundraising target. A retiring Dunedin dentist has also donated his whole clinic fit-out and equipment so that free dental services can be offered at the hospital. “Many people assume if you live in Queenstown you’ve got the financial means to access all health services, but that’s not the case,” says Melissa. “One lovely Wanaka man, Paul Cosgrove, was declined a colonoscopy in time and he passed away,” she says. “Bowel cancer, if detected early, is very curable and colonoscopies will be the first free service we offer.” Specialists, doctors and nurses will all volunteer their services for free. “Our hospital will help people who can’t get help through the public health services, or can’t access private health services- the people who have nowhere else to go,” she says. None of his family, who all miss him dearly, believe Blair would’ve been able to comprehend the enormity of what’s occurred all because one once carefree Kiwi farmer took a mighty stand for the greater good.

Queenstowners driving ‘using phones frequently’ by Paul Taylor

Fifteen drivers were caught using their mobile phones, five speeding, four not wearing seatbelts and two drink driving on a single day in Queenstown. They were all stopped and ticketed by one officer on Wednesday, 23 March. Road Policing officer Constable Brent Rush says using a mobile phone while driving is an offence officers frequently see people committing in Queenstown. “It is really obvious to police who is concentrating on the task at hand and who isn’t,” Rush says. “People who are driving distracted often do not see police, even in marked vehicles, and when we pull those people over, they know they have been caught.” Rush says it’s also common for police to see people committing several driving offences at the same time, such as using thier phone and speeding. “When everyone around them is driving safely they stick out like a sore thumb.” In 2020, distraction was a factor in 23 deaths and 125 serious injuries on New Zealand roads. But it seems that the message “isn’t really sinking in” Rush says. “If you don’t want to be stopped by police, don’t give us a reason to.” Road Policing Manager, Senior Sergeant Sarah Thorn says the problem is not just in Queenstown, high-risk driving happens all over the country. “Using a mobile while driving, places yourself, anyone else in your vehicle and all other road users at risk,” she says. “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility; we all have a role to play in keeping our roads safe.”

COMMUNITY NOTES

Let’s talk Neurodiversity – what exactly is that? Neurodiversity is an umbrella term that encompasses learning differences such as Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, Dyspraxia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism and Tic Disorders, like Tourette’s, plus many others. The term recognises the fact that everyone’s brain is wired differently, but some differ from this “typical” or “neurotypical” wiring more than others. Neurodiversity attempts to emphasise the positives of this different wiring and recognise that “neurodivergent” people have many unrecognised talents. It is also an attempt to move away from the idea that these individuals are not intelligent. Neurodivergent learners simply learn in a different way to neurotypical ones. The various ways in which we learn are not better or worse than each other – they are simply different. However, the challenge for neurodivergent learners is learning within the constraints of our existing education system – one that does not always recognise their needs. Currently, the statistics for neurodivergent learners are not great; • The rate of mental health issues double in people with a learning difference compared to those that don’t. • Their school dropout rate can be as high as 35%, twice as high as the national average. • An estimated 10% of the population is dyslexic – rising as high as 90% within our prison population.

Neurodiverse children in the Whakatipu Basin need your help At least 1 in 5 children in New Zealand is neurodiverse. The rate of mental health problems in people with a learning difference is double that of the general population. The school dropout rates of people with neurodiversity can be as high as 35%, twice as high as the national average of many countries. An estimated 10% of the population is dyslexic, rising as high as 90% within our prison system. It does not have to be this way. Help us empower whanau to access the help required to holistically support all our neurodiverse tamariki in the Whakatipu Basin. We offer a free navigation service guiding whanau to access professional support which can make a significant impact in the lives of neurodiverse children and their families. The ability for these families to access this much-needed support is often limited by financial barriers which is why we need your help.

Your support matters You can make a difference by making a Pivotal Point Pledge to help families overcome the financial barriers to getting critical professional support for their neurodiverse children, at a level that works for you.

Help is available but it’s at great cost, as most support from professionals can only be sourced privately – something that is not an option for many of our families in the Whakatipu. Pivotal Point Charitable Trust was formed last year to provide a navigation service and support groups to help neurodiverse children and their families find their way through the system. The charity will also provide professional development programmes and a screening programme to help with early identification and support of neurodiverse learners. We have been fortunate to receive funding from Impact100 to help with providing these services. However, very few funders provide support for individuals to assist with the targeted professional support needed. The Pivotal Point Pledge was launched last week to enable the community to join together to help these children receive the support that can make a life-changing difference. Any little bit will help. We established the Pledge to help our local children and their families achieve the futures we all dream of. Funding should not be a barrier and in the Whakatipu, we are renowned for looking out for each other and supporting our tamariki. We know that we can make a difference for neurodiverse children and their families – we just need your help to do this. Improving the future for even one child is great, making a difference for all our children would be incredible!

What’s On

Queenstown

Community Quilt Project Queenstown Library is turning 145 and to celebrate they are keen to showcase your artwork with a collaborative quilt around the theme of ‘community’. Therefore they are asking for the community to get creative with a quilt square! Maybe it’s what you love most about the Queenstown Lakes? Is it the people, the mountains, hiking, skiing, the wineries? Your square should measure 20cm x 20cm. This allows a 17cm x 17cm square for your design with an additional 1.5cm seam allowance on all sides. Anything outside of those parameters will not be visible as this is where the quilt will be assembled and the squares will be stitched together. Use any materials that can be washed and stitched. You can sew, knit, crochet, cross-stitch or embroider your square or you can cut a square from an old t-shirt or pillowcase and decorate it. Use fabric markers, fabric paints or iron-on transfers or get crafty with fabric glue, sequins, pompoms and yarn. All ages and abilities are welcome as this is a project for everyone!

Are you or do you know someone who is having trouble conceiving naturally? One of the greatest ways to deal with infertility is to talk about it. This is not always easy or comfortable. You may also feel alone and not have people to talk to who understand the experience of infertility. Due to the private nature of infertility, it is difficult to know who to contact.

For more information please contact the Queenstown Library (03) 441 0600 or email queenstown.library@qldc.govt.nz

MENTAL health

How to think in a way that makes the darkest of days have hidden gifts Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland

Let’s talk a little about mindset. It’s what I am passionate about, depending what mindset you are running will effect your life. Period. The clients we work with that think we do the doing, like we wave a magic wand and change will happen, will go away disappointed, the first thing that we need to look at is talk to the client about an empowerment mindset. This is where you look at your life and at some level accept responsibility for it. Let me give you an example of what I mean. Imagine you’re a cork, you are bobbing around in the ocean and you find yourself washed up on Blackpool beach, now if you’ve never been to Blackpool, don’t bother. It’s full of stag and hen do’s, tattoos and football shirts and that’s just the children. Best to be avoided. So you find yourself on the beach and you say, well that’s OK, I have this dream of living in the Maldives and the ocean will take me there one day. It is just a matter of waiting for the right current to take me there. So you wait and you wait. Each tide takes you back and forth from the beach in Blackpool to the Liffy, the river that runs through Dublin, back and forth, just hoping that one day an external element such as the current will take you to your dream location. It never does, the cork gets old and finds itself where old corks go when they age and the script sounds like this; “ I always dreamt of living in the Maldives, it just never happened for me, the current never took me, I wasn’t one of the lucky ones.” What has happened is a lifetime of waiting for an external factor to change so that their life can be changed.

Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland runs an International Neural Coding® Company. She has 30 Neural Coders working with her around the globe, online to help people identify their problem, delete it and install neural coding that empowers them.

Winning the lottery, a better job, a new relationship, their spouse to be more (fill in the gaps), moving house, more money, better health, you get the picture. And yet it never does, those external elements don’t make our lives better. It is how we take control of our life, once we see that we can take charge, we can change course, we are the navigator then things do start to change. One of our students who came on one of our live courses in New Zealand really loved this concept of being in control and learning from what life deals us. Hayden stayed in touch with us as most of our students do, he came for dinner and shared with us that he applies this empowerment thinking to his life. He’s evolved it and it is much easier to grasp, so I want to share this with you. When we are expecting things to change for us, people to change around us, life to deal us a better card then it is like life is happening to you. You are at the mercy of whatever is dealt, you blame whatever that is, there tends to be a blame mentality. I did this, when I got kidney cancer, I defaulted to why me, how can this happen to me? I am the fittest I have ever been. I had just cycled from Lands End to John O’Groats with two friends, Malcolm and Jonny. For a joke I suggested we threw the National Three Peaks in for good measure so that not only had we cycled the length of the UK but we had also climbed the height of it. They thought it was a great idea, so back in June 2013 that’s what we did, the whole thing, 100 miles a day for 12 days. I was the fittest I had ever been. Then when I returned to NZ I was having a routine health check, my blood pressure was high, I went to see the doctor. She suggested I take blood pressure tables which I declined. She could have just told me to get on my way, refusing to take the prescriptions she has suggested, instead though she recommended we run an ultrasound. The truth is if I’d have taken the prescription, I would not be here today. The truth is, if she hadn’t been vigilant, I would not be here today. I was very fortunate. The scan showed a tumor the size of a golf ball in my left kidney, so surgery is planned immediately. It felt like life was happening to me, how could this be? I was so fit and yet here I was sat opposite the urologist and he was telling me I had cancer. I decided that I needed to think differently and rather than life happening to me I needed to think that life was happening for me. When we think that life is happening for us and it allows us to look for the bigger meaning it allows us to look for the learnings and what this has been sent to teach us. So with this new mindset of life is happening for me I started to look at what this could mean.

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN

With a diagnosis of something like cancer people come to help you they give you books, some things that they found helpful or they tell you stories about people that have overcome the disease and sometimes to share things with you they’re not so helpful, of course it’s not intentional, it’s just I don’t really know what to say. I decided to look upon this as an adventure I hadn’t chosen to go on but I was on it anyway so I may as well look at it through adventurous eyes. With this mindset of ‘ life is happening for me’ I was able to look at what was going to teach me. I became curious about what I might learn and what my experience might be with this diagnosis that I never thought I would experience.

Orange In the Garden

This mindset really served me as somebody that had never been into hospital before. I found it really interesting that when I looked at it as an adventure I hadn’t chosen to go on but I was on it anyway. I may as well be curious about the experience, so rather than being fearful and looking at the experience through fearful eyes, I looked at the experience through childlike eyes.

Orange is the theme of this season. In the garden, we’re growing orange carrots, squashes, pumpkins and my most successful tomato plants this season are orange tomatoes (Kings Seeds, gold). You may even own a few orange gardening tools, thanks to a certain well-known Kiwi brand. I’ve started painting my smaller hand tools’ handles orange because I have a habit of mindlessly putting them down, finding them months later; some are permanently lost to garden elves…

When the anesthetist came to meet me on the morning of surgery she told me she was going to give me a little concoction to make me feel calm before going down to surgery, I asked her if I could remain awake and go and see the operating theatre, as this was something I’ve never seen before only ever on the movies, she did think this was quite a weird suggestion but decided she would honor it anyway.

But, Autumn doesn’t feel very orange. It’s crept up on us and suddenly, all those garden jobs you planned to do in the last couple of months, have caught up on you. High on the list is tidying the garden up after a rampant growing season, especially weeds. Either chuck them in the compost if they’re seed-free or into a bucket with water to make a weedy fertilizer tea.

This became quite good fun, I met with a team that would be operating on me I saw the operating theatre which was super shiny and what alarmed me was how tiny the table was where the operation would take place in fact, I said how on earth am I going to be able to stay on there and she said don’t worry will strap you down, so why don’t you jump on there now and it will make it easier for the team.

Most important is planting some winter veggies. Get along to the garden centre, grab some seedling punnets and start planting your autumn and winter crops. This is pretty much your last chance, assuming the weather gods stay on our side.

This mindset of ‘life is happening for me’ allowed me to be curious every turn as to what I might learn from the experience. Please know that it doesn’t mean to say that you have to live your life from this mindset for the whole time. There will be times when you want to blame other people, blame the environment, blame the situation and that’s okay but just know that whilst ever you’re in a blame mentality and thinking of life is happening to me then you are powerless and you’ll stay stuck where you are. When we work with clients it’s really important that the client appreciates which mindset they are currently operating from because the truth is if they’re coming from a mindset of life is happening to me and it’s everybody else’s fault as to why I am where I am and sadly change will not come for them. Because they are expecting someone else to do the changing for them, or the environment to change, which will then change their situation. It’s an illusion. If somebody would’ve tapped me on the shoulder that day in hospital after I had my kidney out and said that a year tomorrow your beautiful husband Keith will die of the same disease I would’ve told them they got the wrong person and there’s no way that could be true.

Trying to sow seeds at this time of year is difficult – you may get away with a mesclun mix and some miners lettuce in a tunnel or glass house, otherwise it’s seedlings all the way at this stage in the growing season. Sow and plant everything under homemade cloches (plastic fruit drink/water bottles with the bottom cut off and frost cloth, or plant in your tunnel/glass house if you’re lucky enough to have one.) Leafy crops to try to grow in winter: • Miners lettuce will grow all winter long. • Parsley keeps the scurvy away. • Tatsoi is nearly an Asian superfood and it’s super growing in the cold weather. • Silverbeet – it’s not new, it’s not flash it’s not in vogue, but cor blimey it’s a cracker for growing through the winter months. Just keep picking those outer leaves. …and for something orange to sprinkle on your salads from the garden this winter, try marigold petals. In a warm spot or in a tunnel/ glass house they can keep flowering all winter long.

And yet a year and a day later, Keith I’ve been with for 19 years passed away having had stomach cancer. And once again I found myself slipping back into the’ life is happening to me’ mindset, blaming cancer, blaming the medical team, I blamed whoever I could to try and ease the pain. Knowing what I know though, I realised that this is a disempowering mindset and whilst it might be good to curl up in a ball and stay in a safe zone, this would not do me any favours in the long run. I was not coming for an empowerment mindset, I was only going to stay stuck. And probably drink a lot of Pinot Noir. Choose the empowerment mindset as many times as you can, no matter how hard it might be, act as though life is happening for you, it is sending a lesson in the pain, the shock, the hurt. You will be much better for it, you will be much stronger as a result of it. Gifts come with curveballs.

NED WEPIHA (WEBSTER) A MAN WITH MANA

For 40 years Ned Wepiha – known locally as Ned Webster, has been beating out perfect rhythm on Queenstown stages and at 60 he can still rock it with the best of them. A father of four and grandfather of nine, Ned is renowned as a kaumatua in these parts – one of Queenstown’s Maori elders, but he disputes that, laughing. “I’m not an elder, ‘cause I haven’t grown up and I’m never going to grow up. An elder is someone above me – body and mind.” Age isn’t getting in his way anyhow. He’s still playing in local bands most weekends and teaching drums, rhythm, guitar, bass guitar, and “anything the kids want to learn” at Wakatipu High School. His southern life is a far cry from his Kaikohekohe Ned, centre, with daughter Ebony Webster, left, and granddaughter, Reina Webster, fresh from performing locally Northland roots, but Invercargill is where his journey to highly respected Queenstown entertainer began in 1978. Ned was raised in a talented musical family, When he was 15 there was a lot of gang trouble around Kaikohekohe and growing up around the local marae. “My family was involved in the Ratana Ned’s mother was sending him to live with whanau in Invercargill. Ned Church, my grandparents before them, and the family thing was to play in scored a job at Ocean Beach Freezing Works. “You had to be 18 and I was the church brass band,” he says. “That’s what set me off to what I wanted 16, then so I lied and within two weeks they’d sent me a plane ticket south. I – to be a drummer.” Ned’s older cousins had a cool band. “They used to didn’t tell my parents,” he says. “I will never forget my first pay - $175. Wow! practise so I sat behind the drummer, aged 10 or 12, and thought, ‘I could That was the early 1970s.” do that stuff’, and I could,” he says. “Those cousins instilled the music in me. By 17 Ned had joined some of Southland’s best known bands. It was a They were my mentors.” baptism of fire for a very young Ned keeping up with the adult band scene. The marae brought a sense of belonging with the parents as caretakers. “One day Jock (Williamson, of Invercargill band Justice) asked if I’d like to “That’s where everything happened – tangi, church and parties. That’s where play in Queenstown that weekend. I was like ‘Okay. Where’s Queenstown?’” the music was.” he says. What Ned didn’t realise was that Wellington band Nephrite Jade The year Ned turned five was the first year that the local Maori had just finished its contract and they were taking over. children left their special kura and integrated with the state school, So Ned Webster began his new life in Queenstown. Kaikohe West. By the time he reached intermediate school the principal of Northland College had heard about his musical talent At 17 he played six nights a week with the band, Friction, living for free in and asked Ned to join the high school band for its productions. the Skyline staff accommodation, tucking into great free lunches and dinners “I was 14 then with hair down to my shoulders and the principal came from the restaurant buffet every day. He was paid $150 a week. Monday round to ask Mum if I could join them and she said, ‘yes’,” says Ned. The night was their night off and was spent at Eichardt’s pub – ‘Hospitality Night’. only problem was the principal insisted he have a haircut. “Mum dragged That night off eventually became a night on with the boys hired by Chico me down to the barbers and I cried and cried. I went home and sat in the Lanz to play at Chico’s Restaurant on Monday nights. “We’d start playing at bathroom washing my hair for hours thinking if I did it would grow back.” Chico’s after the pub closed at 10pm.” But it was at Skyline that Ned became famous for wowing the tourists with his Elvis Presley impersonations. “As the resident band we had to break it up a bit and have a bit of fun so we would do break-out acts,” says Ned. “We became known as ‘Na Na Sha’, our version of Sha Na Na.” “It started as a bit of a laugh but one of the waitresses offered to make me a white suit with all the frills,” says Ned. A ‘special guest’ was announced to be on the way in his helicopter while Ned was out the back during the break frantically curling and slicking back his hair. “The band played Viva Las Vegas as I ran onto the stage and performed all my Elvis favourites.” It was the fulfilment of a long-held dream. “When I was 10 or 12 I’d sit in front of the mirror practising my tone and moving my upper lip just like Elvis.” Needless to say he’s since been crowned a Wakatipu Entertainer of the Year in 2002.

“I’ve been a lucky man. I’ve been in the right place at the right time and I think my attitude and my presentation, which I’ve learned through the years, has given me that work ethic,” he says. “People appreciated professionalism from entertainers so I would always get a call and as a result I’ve worked with many bands in Queenstown and throughout New Zealand.” A co-founder of the successful Wakatipu Giants in 1988, rugby league is a

For six years he managed and performed in the famous Kiwi Haka at Skyline, opened by ‘Papa Pita Sharples’. These days Ned’s also teaching the ancient Maori art of the Taiaha – Mau Rākau, in the community – an art form that’s used as a vehicle for Te Reo Maori. He also teaches this in Invercargill once a fortnight at Southland Boys High School and Te Kura Arowhenua. Ned’s even toured Australia with Herbs, and New Zealand with Midge Marsden, Billy T James and Patsy Rigger. Teaching music and Maori came about as his kids passed through local schools. “Teaching Te Reo was about relearning it for myself and the high school had a gap it couldn’t fill. I did it more as a Maori father and community man, offering my services.” That progressed to teaching Kapa Haka at local schools and founding The Whanau Group – a community support group for newcomers to town. If the gap’s not filled then Ned puts his hand up. “You see what’s not going on in the community and put yourself in that role, rather than sitting back and talking about people. Get in there and do it yourself,” he says. It’s the motto of a music man with mana who says he’ll never retire, “so long as Elvis lives on in my house”.

Autumn

We are headed into the last months of Autumn and that’s the time where the fresh summer produce is ending. Now is the time to take advantage of some great veggie buying to make scrumptious Autumn dinner veggie meals.

Recipes

Grilled smoky creamed corn

Right now, sweetcorn is at really good prices in the supermarket and this recipe is a good one, though perhaps not the healthiest to have as a side with a BBQ steak or with pork. This is creamed corn taken to the next level. The addition of grilled red pepper and paprika add a smokiness to match the sweetness of the corn. Topped with grated cheese and flashed under the grill to finish, this is a comforting, decadent dish. Prep time: 20 minutes | Cook time: 30 minutes | Serves 4-6 as a side

Ingredients

• 1 red capsicum, stalk and seeds removed, and cut into quarters • Olive oil for brushing • 2 tbsp (30g) butter • ½ red onion, chopped • 2 sweetcorn cobs • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 1 tsp smoked paprika • Pinch of chilli flakes (optional) • Salt and cracked pepper • 1 heaped tbsp flour (can use gluten-free) • ¾ cup (185ml) milk • ½ cup (125ml) cream • 1 cup (100g) grated cheese • Chopped chives or parsley to serve

Instructions

1. Brush the capsicum wedges with olive oil. Chargrill, skin side down in a hot frying pan or on the BBQ until the skin is nicely charred and flesh softened, about 15 minutes.

2. Place in a small bowl and cover with a plate. Set aside for 10 minutes to allow the peppers to sweat and loosen the skin so it is easier to remove. You can use store-bought roasted red capsicums. In the same frying pan melt the butter over a moderate heat. Add the onion and cook for 5 minutes until softened. 3. Meanwhile, remove the husks from the corn and hold a corn cob in a bowl and use a small knife to cut the sweetcorn kernels from the cob. Repeat with the second cob. Add the sweetcorn, along with the garlic, paprika and chilli (if using) to the onions. 4. Season with a generous pinch of salt and twist of cracked pepper. Saute for 2 minutes then add the flour and stir over the heat until combined. 5. Slowly pour in the milk then cream, stirring constantly as the sauce thickens.

6. Peel the skin from the grilled capsicum and finely chop. Add to the corn and stir to combine. Cook for 6-8 minutes until the creamed corn has thickened and the corn kernels are tender. Add half of the grated cheese and stir through until melted. 7. Pour the creamed corn into a 20cm baking dish (or leave in the frying pan if it is oven-proof). Scatter with the remaining cheeses and flash under a searing hot oven grill until the cheese is melted and bubbly. About 5 minutes. Scatter with chopped herbs and serve - on toast with scrambled eggs on the side, or as a side to dinner.

Warm spiced rice salad with fried cauliflower and broccoli Prep time 10mins | Cooking time 25mins | Serves 6

Ingredients

• 1 and 3/4 cups (350g) brown rice • 1/2 head broccoli, cut into florets • 1/2 head cauliflower, cut into florets • 1/4 cup (60ml) olive oil, plus extra to drizzle • 1 onion, finely chopped • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped • 1/2 tsp black mustard seeds • 1/2 bunch each mint, coriander, flat-leaf parsley, leaves picked • 1/2 bunch spring onions, white and light green parts thinly sliced • Juice of 1/2 lemon • 100g thick Greek-style yoghurt • 1 tbs harissa

Instructions

1. Cook rice according to packet instructions or until tender. Bring a saucepan of salted water to the boil and blanch the broccoli and cauliflower for 2 minutes or until tender. Drain and set aside. 2. Heat oil in a large frypan over medium heat. Cook the onion for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add the garlic and mustard seeds, and cook for a further 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Add the cauliflower and broccoli, increase heat to medium-high and cook for 3-4 minutes until browned.

3. Transfer broccoli and cauliflower mixture to a bowl with the rice, herbs and spring onion, then season and toss to combine. Squeeze over the lemon juice and drizzle over extra oil. 4. Combine the yoghurt and harissa, then serve with the warm salad.

Wakatipu Generation Give students at work in the boardroom

…GOTTA GIVE IT TO THEM

- QUEENSTOWN’S BUDDING YOUNG BOARD MEMBERS by Sue Fea A few Generation Give Wakatipu teenagers, some as young as 13, have been giving adult notfor-profit board members a run for their money on local boards after graduating as experts in the fundraising business. Generation Give is a charitable business programme founded by local research analyst Chris Belmont and two fellow ex Wakatipu High School students, Beatrice Onions and Hugh Taylor. Each year students are selected from a pool of applications from across the Wakatipu Basin. Despite Covid lockdowns and financial pressures locally, the students have managed to distribute more than $50,000 for charities of their choice since the programme began in 2019. Chris, who has philanthropy pumping through his veins, says: “I have my mother to thank for this.” Chris’s mother Jennifer Belmont is the chief executive officer of the Wakatipu Community Foundation, a huge supporter of Generation Give. “It’s her passion passed on that inspired me to pursue this.” The 13 to 18-year-old local high school students meet in a local, independent board room. During each session they brainstorm as part of a simulated non-profit board programme where they learn essential skills in the governance process. Each course lasts for 20 weeks and leading professional mentors from the community come in to give advice. “It’s up to the students to learn and find their own resources, but we need to bring qualified people in to talk to them,” says Chris. These have included fundraising legend Kaye Parker, the late Sir Eion Edgar, successful entrepreneur Trevor Gile, District Mayor Jim Boult and politician Joseph Mooney.

These budding young board members follow a rigorous curriculum, learning everything from entrepreneurial skills, marketing and governance to consensus building and accountancy.

The whole concept is designed to train young people to be the most efficient givers, says Chris. “They’re graduating with skills too that will set them up for any future career.”

“Our main goal is to train these kids to become qualified philanthropists, board members and young professionals,” says Chris.

The satisfying part for the kids is getting to choose where the money they’ve raised goes to. “They spend the whole year vetting dozens of charities, so when they make their final decisions and hand over the big cheques on stage, that’s pretty special,” says Chris.

“We already have a few students serving on local non-profit boards because of the programme,” he says. “Some of our graduates are equally, if not more, qualified to sit on non-profit boards than some adult board members,” he says. “We don’t discriminate against age. The Year 9s and 10s are often a lot more receptive than the older kids.” Generation Give operates under the umbrella of Chris’s Youth Philanthropy NZ, which has a group of generous partners, including the foundation, that greatly assist the programme.

The fourth year of the programme’s existence in Queenstown, unhampered with Covid-19 restrictions, starts soon. Applications are now being sought for this year’s programme with information available on the Youth Philanthrophy NZ website (ypnz.org/ apply2022).

Each student brings different gifts and talents to the boardroom table. “We don’t want to build a board of 20 head boys or girls, but one that’s representative of the community around them,” he says. “We look for a few analytical people, some logical ones, creatives and natural leaders, all different talents, but mostly we’re looking for passion – people who take the time to think and speak from the heart.” Chris, Beatrice and Hugh, only 21 themselves, believe young people are the only demographic in the world whose ideas haven’t yet been heard, and so far, those ideas have been pretty cool. It’s been such a popular programme – more than 100 applications since 2019 - that it’s already operating in Auckland and Christchurch, where they’re running the programme in 20 schools. Wellington, where Hugh is based, is next on the radar.
