New Year’s resolution
Hands up who expected 2021 to be a much better year than 2020. I know I did and in many ways it was, but it was also another very tough year for nearly everyone I’ve spoken to, regardless of whether they’re a business owner or resident. Every time there was light at the end of the tunnel, it turned out to be a train bearing a Greek letter. There are nine left in the Greek alphabet after Omicron, so to speculate that 2022 is going to better than the last two is not something I’m game to do. I’d much rather say ‘what will be will be’, especially as on Sunday the Ministry of Health named two locations of interest in Queenstown, where a person with Covid-19 visited over New Year. But, I believe we must continue to look for the positives this year, especially with regards to what’s going well in our community. Once again in 2021, it was humbling to see how locals pulled together, whether it was to support struggling friends, family, neighbours and local businesses, or through volunteer work, philanthropy, charity donations, Trust grants and mental health initiatives. Mental health, in particular, continues to be an insidious unseen enemy for so many, but with new programmes and our collective heightened awareness, it’s something we’re beginning to tackle. There’s also been no slowdown in the number of people choosing to make Queenstown Lakes their home. Every community in the region is booming, there are new families everywhere. Next month will see the new school at Jack Point / Hanley’s Farm open its doors, while others look to continue to expand. I worry about the infrastructure and roads keeping apace, but a rapidly expanding population will help underpin businesses, while tourism remains domestic.
Fun in the sun at Glenorchy Races as from left, Jade Pike, Sarah Campbell, Max Davis and Beck Gardner enjoy a tipple.
Even when the borders reopen, it’s obvious tourism won’t be the same. Every new business not linked directly to tourism will help to build a robust, sustainable economy. The massive studio complex approved for Wanaka and the tech centre at Remarkables Park, for example, are going to radically help diversify the region’s economy. The council’s economic development group is pushing hard to attract high paying industries. It will take time but the initial results are encouraging. The controversial streets upgrades also has its positives. Like everyone else, I’ve been very frustrated by the pace and disruption, but we are now getting glimpses of how it will all look, with the reopening of Lower Beach St. The barricades are also coming down at O’Connells and there are new retail options in Brecon St and Five Mile. We even have a new Southern Cross hospital and there has been something of the old buzz about the district since the New Year began, with flights in the skies and people on the streets again. And the forecast is for another three months of sun. While it’s hard to forecast what 2022 will bring, there’s plenty of hope for our community. Happy New Year everyone.

Te Kura Whakatipu o Kawarau nearing the end of construction late last year.
Strong enrolments for new 450-pupil school by Sue Fea
There’s an excited buzz in the air over Hanley’s Farm and Jack’s Point already with the anticipated first students’ opening day of the brand new Te Kura Whakatipu o Kawarau on February 8.
Top quality teachers have been drawn from all over New Zealand too, with one male teacher from Tasmania in Australia working from a distance until the borders open. “He’s desperate to get over here and join us,” says Tania.
Principal Tania McNamara is no newcomer to the top job. She’s been principal of Milton Primary School for the past 10 years and prior to that deputy principal at Lawrence Area School for 10 years. Tania’s been at her new desk getting ready all of last year (2021), working with the Board of Trustees, and more recently her team of enthusiastic staff, in anticipation of next month’s opening.
As the name suggests, Te Kura – place to learn; Whakatipu – gathering and growing; o Kawarau – our kura is under the cloak of the maunga (mountain), the Te Reo for The Remarkables. “Our name was gifted to us by local iwi and we’re very proud of it. We want to respect that, but we expect the school name may be shortened to Te Kura Kawarau,” says Tania.
She’s super excited to welcome students to the flash new 450-pupil school. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” she says, keenly.
teachers are buzzing. We’re all so excited.”
Just prior to C h r i s t m a s , enrolments stood at more than 80 with a steady flow coming in, mostly from other schools in the Wakatipu Basin. Te Kura Whakatipu o Kawarau’s zone only takes in mainly pupils from its own surrounds – the fast-growing Hanley’s Farm and Jack’s Point. “We’re working on an 80 to 100 starting roll,” says Tania. “The
Sustainability is a big focus at the new school with its school gardens and ‘garden to table’ philosophy. An outdoor kitchen is being designed and eventually a hangi oven will be built in. “There’s a good balance with our spaces – a team of three classes at each end joined in the middle with open spaces for art and science and the likes,” says Tania. This opens onto a covered outdoor learning area. “We have some really amazing magical spaces,” she says. The entire staff worked together during the last term of last year (2021) developing the school vision, values and culture. “Our values are all about belonging, unity, and nurturing. We’re in the privileged position of starting with a blank canvas, setting it right from the beginning, that clarity and consistency,” says Tania. “All children are unique individuals and need a sense of belonging, to feel safe and nurtured.” “It’ll be so wonderful for our children and parents to be able to walk or bike to school if they want to with no main roads to cross too,” says Tania. “We hope to be a special gathering place for the local community as our name suggests.” A special dawn blessing will be held at 5.30am on February 8, followed by a Mihi Whakatau at 9.00am to welcome the community to Te Kura Whakatipu o Kawarau and officially open the school.
The next two stages will be built depending on demand, but so far that demand for stage one has been strong. The board has appointed two deputies, who’ve both taught previously at Queenstown Primary School. Lara Kirk, who grew up locally, has recently been working as a professional learning facilitator, while Cameron Beer brings deputy head experience from London to the role. “We’re aware we will have big junior numbers with so many young families at Hanley’s Farm so we’ve appointed a Junior Team Leader, Megan Watson, from Christchurch,” says Tania.

Glenorchy Races ride on by Paul Taylor
It was a day for comebacks at the Glenorchy Races on Saturday. The popular rural horse race meeting returned for its 60th running, after it was forced to cancel last year due to heavy rain. Glenorchy-born rider Nicole O’Boyle was also back in the saddle after a few years off due to motherhood, taking down the Ladies Gallop on quarter horse Cruise.
Nolan’s also been coming to the event “for years and years” and was pleased to see it could go ahead in Covid restrictions. “They’ve done really well, going round checking everyone’s vaccine passes and getting it on.” Arrowtowner Andrew Green and Glenorchy’s national showjumping star Grace Percy dominated the rest of the races on a sweltering afternoon.
And veteran horse Harry won the Open Gallop for the sixth time, after being stood down for the past two race days by owner-rider Calder Houliston to give others a chance in the 2000-metre race - two laps of the track.
Green won the Walk Trot and Gallop, Saddling Race and the Trotting Cup on horse Simmona and the Local Gallop on Jezabel, also winning the Aggregate Cup.
Houliston also won the 1/4 mile Sprint on the 14-year-old horse.
Green and Percy won the Double Banking on Briggy, while Percy also rode Briggy to victory in the hotly-contested Stockmans Race. The $20-entry event, an annual day out for farmers and Queenstowners, is a fundraiser for Lakeside Rugby Club, which also distributes the proceeds, about $10,000 this year, to other local causes. Club president Alastair Wallace, who’s O’Boyle’s dad, said: “It’s just been great to be able to get it on, last year the track was just too wet. “We waited till the last minute, with the changing Covid restrictions, and then we’ve done everything possible to go ahead. It’s been a great day with some neat racing.” Twenty-eight horses competed at the races, also down on previous years due to Covid-19 restrictions, including the need for competitors and attendees to be double-vaxxed.
Glenorchy Races Ladies Gallop winning rider Nicole O’Boyle with horse Cruise and his owner / trainer Annie Nolan, of Haast.
O’Boyle was elated after winning the Ladies Gallop, in front of a crowd of about 2000 people, down on previous years. “It was good, very exciting,” she says. O’Boyle, a teacher in Moa Flat, Roxburgh, has competed for 17 years at Glenorchy Races, winning the Double-Banking six years in a row and the Relay and Saddling once. “But I’ve had three children in between, so haven’t been back on for the last three years. It’s awesome to be back and really cool the event could go ahead.” Cruise’s owner / trainer Annie Nolan, from Haast, was also delighted, with her horse also one of three in the winning relay team Precipice. “He’s having a great day. I take him on the beach and fitten him up. It seems to work.”

Owners James Ace and Bert Haines say they can’t wait to see their new ice lounge taking shape. “It will literally be the coolest job in New Zealand as Victor puts his creative skills to work and we’re sure locals and visitors will be keen to check out the end result,” Ace says. “We recently celebrated our tenth anniversary and a successful first year in business at Margo’s, but we love to keep innovating and growing.” Queenstown Ice Bar will open 12pm until late daily. Guests will keep warm by wearing cosy winter coats provided at the door.
New spot: Upper Village on Brecon St
Ice bar aims for night owls Queenstown Ice Bar is on track to open on January 18, aiming to be more of a drinking spot than family-friendly activity. The bar is the latest hospo venue from the team at Future Hospitality Group which also operates Margo’s Mexican restaurant, Little Blackwood, Minus 5º ICE BAR and Rhino’s Ski Shack. But it will be a more premium and ‘grown up’ offering than Minus 5º, with a carefully-curated cocktail menu catering for pre-dinner tipples, après ski get togethers, or late-night drinks. Catering for 50 guests, in the new Upper Village hub on Brecon Street, just below the Skyline, it will have a Scandinavian-inspired cocktail lounge, built from 25 tonnes of glass-like ice architecture.
Hundreds take up business support offer By Maddy Harker / Wanaka App
Hundreds of Queenstown Lakes businesses have already benefited from two business support funds created after the arrival of Covid-19. The funds, which are being distributed through the Otago Regional Business Partners network, offer businesses support for planning in response to Covid-19 and implementation of those plans. The funds were announced in May 2021 by tourism minister Stuart Nash as part of targeted funding to support five regions hardest hit by the tourism downturn: Fiordland, South Westland, Queenstown Lakes, Mackenzie District and Kaikōura. The first fund, the Business Advisory Support Fund, offers up to $5,000 per business for expert advice on planning and decision-making. More than 200 businesses used the fund during September and October 2021. Figures for November and December are not yet available. The second fund, which provides businesses with another grant of up to $5,000 to help implement the plans and advice, was used by 50 businesses during September and October. QLDC economic development manager Peter Harris said he was pleased to see businesses make use of the support. “We know that this support is tiny compared to the lack of revenue businesses are suffering from, but if it helps them get good advice and act on it then it offers one small way they can move forward,” he said. A third fund - a kick-start fund so eligible tourism businesses can receive funding to help scale up to respond to the return of international visitors – has been put on hold by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment until there is clarity about when the borders will open for visitors. Businesses that have not yet signed up can find more information, including eligibility criteria, at www.otagochamber.co.nz

Queenstown alert over Covid-19 by Paul Taylor
Two places in Queenstown have been named as locations of interest by the Ministry of Health. SkyCity Casino and the Oaks Club Suites are both locations where someone confirmed with Covid-19 visited over the New Year period. They are the first places named as locations of interest in Queenstown Lakes District since the outbreak of the Delta variant began on August 17, 2021. The alert covers SkyCity Casino between 5.50pm and 7.30pm on New Year’s Day, Saturday, January 1. But it covers four days at the Oaks Club Suites, a hotel apartment complex at 171 Frankton Road, from 9.30pm on Thursday, 30 December, to 8.30am on Sunday, 2 January. Anyone who was at those locations should self-monitor for Covid-19 symptoms for 10 days after they were exposed. If symptoms develop, get a test and stay at home until you get a negative test result. There were 85 new cases of Covid-19 in the community on Friday and Saturday, but none in Queenstown or the South Island. They were in Auckland (57), Waikato (7), Taranaki (1), Bay of Plenty (16), Rotorua (2) and Wellington (2). The casino and complex were named on Sunday night, but more may have been added since the Lakes Weekly Bulletin went to press. Check the Ministry of Health website and the Queenstown App for updates.

CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
Goodbye, Johnny Martin - we are all very much richer and poorer in this community because of you. Richer because you had the brains and balls to develop beautiful, appealing buildings, as well as speaking out against the idiocies of letting property developers pillage our lovely part of the world, I’m talking about the Arrowtown Miners’ Cottages saga, the airport fiasco and all the other horrors. We’re poorer because you’re not here, and we need more people like you to keep things honest and transparent. A massive crowd gathered to celebrate this much-loved local - it was not a typical funeral - sun, fun and young are not normal funeral features (even though “funeral” does start with “fun”). Amisfield was the perfect setting, and Johnny’s huge and varied circle of friends meant a lot of excited reconnections. The speeches were short and very funny, all with stories describing the many sides of this mercurial man. All that was missing to make the event truly wonderful, was Johnny himself. He’d have loved it. My lucky daughter just landed in NZ after months and months of trying to get an MIQ slot - all going well, she’ll be out just in time to be a bridesmaid at her friend’s wedding and she’s certainly lucky in that she got a huge room with a big desk, huge sofa, full kitchen - even a coffee machine!! and rarest treat of all, opening windows. She hasn’t been back here for 2 years and I’m really interested to hear what changes she notices most. The biggest change for me right now is NO Lake Hayes Show. Instead, we had the polo tournament. Loads of young families, sexy polo players, picnic rugs all over the place and perfect weather - it’s the dream combination. I do still miss the show, though. Wonderful news is that the the ceilidh is coming back! The Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall Burns Supper and Ceilidh Dance is on January 22. Last time they really struggled to get rid of us - no one wanted to go home. Drag out your tartan trews and motheaten kilts for another chance to get reeling. And Opera in the Garden is happening on Feb 20. Do let me know of other events coming up - it’s NEVER boring living here, but I lose count of the times I only find out about something terrific, and it’s too late. Queenstown has come alive again, especially with these balmy evenings - the streets and waterfront are busy and bustling, with an excellent mix of nationalities. With so many visitors in town, it’s surprising that so few COVID tests have been done - I’m guessing there’ll be a huge spike in cases this week when everyone goes back to work. I can totally understand why people WOULDN’T want to risk getting tested and having to self- isolate. Despite that, my son’s enjoying COVID on the beach - he lives in Sydney but isn’t able to get back to New Zealand, so he went to Mexico instead. After a huge run of New Year celebrations, he got COVID but as he’d already gone for some downtime by the sea, he is happily self-isolating. I see our passport has been named the world’s most powerful for 2021. It really is the best... as long as you’re not trying to return to your own country. Let’s hope 2022 will see us all able to be with the people we love most again.

Queenstown housing NZ’s most expensive by Paul Taylor
Queenstown Lakes remains the most expensive place to buy a house in New Zealand. The latest figures from property data analysts CoreLogic show the average value of a house in the district is $1,568,820. That’s even more expensive than Auckland, which sits at $1,426,882. Prices remain high despite a -1.2% drop in December, taking values back below the $1.6m mark they exceeded at the end of November. CoreLogic NZ Head of Research Nick Goodall believes that could be down to previous optimism from the proposed border opening being scuppered by the arrival of the Omicron variant of Covid-19. Still, the average value is up 30% in a year. That’s a blow to people and families looking to get on the property ladder here, and also those hoping to upsize. Julie Scott, chief executive of Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust, told councillors at the last full meeting on December 16, there are 774 households on the waiting list for affordable housing. She welcomed the council’s Queenstown Lakes Homes Strategy and Action Plan, which aims to improve the availability of housing in the district. “In particularly, inclusionary zoning is a really important aspect of the homes strategy and something we look forward to working with council to develop down the track,” she said. Te Rautaki Kāika o Queenstown Lakes (the strategy and action plan) aims to increase affordable housing options for the community over the next decade. It also aims to ensure a range of housing options exist for everyone, homes in the district are healthy, warm and sustainable, and for the council works in partnership with others, such as the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and Kāinga Ora, to achieve these aims. Inclusionary zoning, which in practice requires a percentage of the units of lots from developments to be sold at an affordable price, is a key part of the strategy. Council will also look at what it can do about vacant land in residential zones and also empty homes, potentially increasing the rates on such properties. Other plans include, potentially, building short-term seasonal worker accommodation, and pushing developers to build higher density.
Nationally, the average value of a New Zealand home now exceeds $1m for the first time, sitting at $1,006,632, according to CoreLogic’s House Price Index figures, released yesterday. That’s due to record 27.6% growth over the full calendar year, exceeding the previous record of 24.4% growth witnessed in 2003. Goodall says heat remains in the market, though the signs of an upcoming cool-down linger. “2021 has truly been a remarkable year in the property market, with low interest rates and the continued ability for most borrowers to secure finance both key contributors to persistently strong demand for residential property,” he says. “It must be acknowledged though that both these factors are changing.” Goodall points to the changes to the Credit Contract and Consumer Finance Act (CCCFA) on 1 December 2021, which brings greater scrutiny of a potential borrower’s expenses and ability to repay their loan. Feedback from mortgage advisors has been very strong that the tightening has gone too far, he says. “While the changes clearly haven’t impacted all borrowers immediately, with values still rising at above average rates, they are likely to be felt more widely throughout 2022 as rising interest rates and diminishing affordability combine to reduce borrowing capacity.”
“The demand is growing an indicates the need for this strategy and the actions outlined in it,” Scott said.
Queenstown’s council fights Three Waters reform by Paul Taylor
Mayor Jim Boult and Queenstown Lakes councillors are urging the Government to reconsider plans to force through Three Waters reform. On Christmas Eve, they published an open letter to the Minister for Local Government Nanaia Mahuta. Mahuta announced in October that councils will have no choice over the transfer of the management of their billions of dollars worth of freshwater, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure to four regional bodies. Boult says he and his fellow elected members felt compelled to express their significant disappointment and to uphold their collective commitment to oppose a Government mandate strongly and actively.
“This council is in no way questioning the need for safe drinking water, to protect our precious environment and ensure effective Māori partnership as expressed through these proposed reforms. “Our own commitment can be seen in the significant investment the council is making in its 2021-2031 Ten Year Plan with more than $750 million allocated to water supply, wastewater and storm water. “But public and stakeholder consultation needs to remain at the heart of such important decisions. “These reforms have the potential to affect generations to come and should be underpinned by meaningful and genuinely open engagement.” The letter asks the Government to “demonstrate leadership and transparency in the delivery of this reform programme and re-establish a full programme of meaningful engagement with New Zealanders before taking any further steps.” The council position also reflects that the programme for reform needs to be re-designed to tackle three waters, resource management and the Future for Local Government review. A copy of the letter is on the QLDC website.

Samsung debuts TV remote that recharges by capturing radio frequency energy from Wi-Fi router Samsung is debuting its newest energy innovation at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas—capturing the energy in radio frequency signals emitted by home Wi-Fi routers to power a TV remote control. The technology is part of Samsung’s stated mission to make consumer products more environmentally friendly. Last year, Samsung officials noted that 99 million AAA batteries are discarded every seven years (the average life expectancy of small devices like TV remote controls). Most of those batteries wind up in landfills where they discharge massive amounts of toxic materials. To address the problem, Samsung began putting rechargeable batteries in their small devices and providing ways for them to be easily recharged, such as using the same charger that is used to charge phones. This year, Samsung’s new remote can be recharged in multiple ways. It can harvest energy from artificial room light, from sunlight, from a USB cable, and now also by capturing the energy in radio frequency signals generated by Wi-Fi routers. Techxplore
David Bowie: Estate sells rights to his entire body of work to WCM David Bowie’s estate has sold the publishing rights to his “entire body of work” to Warner Chappell Music, including hundreds of songs such as Space Oddity, Changes and Let’s Dance. WCM now has global music publishing rights to his song catalogue. Variety suggested the deal was worth “upwards of $250m (£185m)”, but the terms of the agreement were not given. The agreement includes the 26 studio albums released during Bowie’s lifetime and the posthumous studio album release, Toy, plus the two studio albums from Tin Machine - the rock supergroup fronted by Bowie. Bowie released a total of 111 singles, averaging two per year during his career, and 51 music videos. Bowie died of cancer in 2016. This deal follows huge names, including Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, recently selling the rights to their music catalogues. BBC
Opioid Prescriptions Decline in Canada Following Cannabis Legalization It’s been two years since Canada legalized recreational cannabis, and one of the many positive benefits has been a drastic decrease in opioid prescriptions. This year, a study compared prescriptions before and after legalization and found that average doses of opioids per person have fallen to less than 20% of their former levels. “On 17 October 2018 recreational cannabis became legal in Canada, thereby increasing access and reducing the stigma associated with its use for pain management,” the study’s abstract explains in an overview of the findings. “This study assessed total opioid prescribing volumes and expenditures prior to and following cannabis legalization.” High Times
110,000 landmines covering 135 km² were destroyed globally last year The Clearing Cluster Munition Remnants 2021 report, on cluster munitions revealed that more than 110,000 landmines covering 135 km² were destroyed globally last year, a new annual record, and that over a million landmines have been cleared in the last decade. This is an exceptional achievement given the backdrop of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the public health management of which has impacted negatively on operations in several countries. More than 110,000 unexploded submunitions were destroyed globally during clearance, survey, and spot tasks in 2020. Four of the world’s most heavily contaminated States–Lao PDR, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Iraq–again saw the greatest clearance during 2020, together accounting for 95% of recorded global output. This brings the total number of unexploded submunitions cleared globally since the Convention became legally binding in 2010 to more than 1 million, with more than 900km2 of cluster munition-contaminated area cleared. As well as saving countless lives and limbs, an untold number of communities have been freed from the fear of unexploded submunitions through cluster munition clearance, and a significant contribution has been made to development through the handing back of land for safe and productive use. THE
best books
of the last 125 years
Last year The New York Times marked 125 years of publishing book reviews by inviting its global audience to nominate their favorite book over that time. Over 2000 nominations poured in from around the world and below is the top five plus some of the top nominations for books that are more of a specialist nature.
With the summer holiday feel still with us, these would all make great additions to your summer selection.
To Kill a Mockingbird
1
By Harper Lee
When you revisit in adulthood a book that you last read in childhood, you will likely experience two broad categories of observation: “Oh yeah, I remember this part,” and “Whoa, I never noticed that part.” That’s what I expected when I picked up “To Kill a Mockingbird,” as the best book of the past 125 years. Two decades had passed since I’d absorbed Harper Lee’s 1960 novel. And yes, there was a huge amount I’d missed on my first time through, ranging from major themes (the prevalence of child abuse) to minor details (unfamiliar words, like “flivver”). Inexcusable lapses in reading comprehension also surfaced, such as the fact that I hadn’t realized Mrs. Dubose — the cranky neighborhood villain — was a morphine addict. (“Mrs. Dubose is a morphine addict,” Atticus states in the book. As an adult, I can perceive why the novel might hold enduring appeal for many and enduring repulsion to perhaps just as many. I also cannot fathom the complexities of teaching it to elementary school students in 2021.

The Fellowship of the Ring
4
By J.R.R. Tolkien
“The depth of lore for an imagined world and the story of friendship that it accompanies lay the foundation for the rest of the fantasy genre that would follow. Yet few stories live up to the standards set by Tolkien.”
One Hundred Years of Solitude By Gabriel García Márquez
“As a piece of literature, it was an earthquake moment, shattering the expectations of a typical realist novel and spawning influences in authors and works from Japan to India and beyond. Out of all the works to have emerged in the last 125 years, none has created a ripple effect, or changed the landscape of literature, as much as this has.”
Owen Clarke, Provo, Utah
Rizowana Hussaini, Guwahati, India

By George Orwell
Beloved
By Toni Morrison
“It still resonates with us up to this day, around 70 years after it was written. Its warning against the excesses of human pride and hunger for power and its challenge to use our love of freedom to guard against these problems are timeless and universal.”
“It’s not a bump in the night, subtle haunting. It’s loud and sick. There are images and emotions from ‘Beloved’ that are stuck in my mind now permanently. This ghost story has taught me more about the legacy of slavery than history books ever did.”
Kathlynn Rebonquin, Mandaluyong City, Philippines
Brontë Mansfield, Chicago, Ill
Below are some titles that are reader favorites in the more specialist subsections • Science Fiction Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler “A bone-chillingly beautiful and heartbreaking tale of exactly what could happen if we don’t take steps now as a society to address social inequalities and the climate crisis.” Courtney Daron, Anaheim, Calif.
• Nonfiction The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson “A beautifully written, sweeping history of the past century in America. Never heavy-handed, Wilkerson’s storytelling places real people in real places, making it possible for any reader to grasp the various impacts of inequality and inequities that still plague America.”
Patricia Methe, Cincinnati, Ohio
• Self Help
The Road Less Traveled by M. Scott Peck
“His opening sentence, ‘Life is difficult’ affirmed my real-life experience. His wise insights into discipline, grace, love, and sin offered hope when I needed it. I ultimately attended seminary and became a pastor who often gifts this book.” Marcia Bilyk, Knowlton Township, N.J.
• Cookbook The Joy of Cooking by Irma S. Rombauer “It may be thin on plot or character, but it opened new worlds to me and my family.” Cody Clark, Houston, Tex.
• Horror
Dracula by Bram Stoker
“Grabbing the dark corners of one’s imagination for 125 years.”
Eleanor Najjar, San Francisco, Calif.
• Children’s Book Watership Down by Richard Adams “Yeah, yeah, I get it — James Joyce, Toni Morrison, Yasunari Kawabata, Clarice Lispector, Gabriel García Márquez —they’re all great, they changed fiction forever. You’re not wrong. But answer me this: How many of them wrote a book entirely about rabbits that could make you laugh, cry, get angry and question the deeper meaning of life?” Brian Dowd, Edgartown, Mass.

COMMUNITY NOTES The Summer Vineyard Series “Live at Kinross” 21st January 2022 with ImaginaryFreNZ & friends
Community News Last year, the district sent 2,500 tonnes of glass to recycling Glass can be recycled infinitely, so it’s great to see bottles and jars having a whole new life all over again But there’s a wee caveat: glass is highly sensitive to contamination, and recycling can only accept glass bottles and jars which were used to package food and drink. These items go in your blue bin. Drinking glasses or wine glasses cannot go in the blue bin for recycling as these are made from a different type of glass. Put them in your red rubbish bin, along with broken cups and plates.

Millbrook launches new championship course by Paul Taylor
A brand-new championship golf course made its public debut at Queenstown’s Millbrook Resort last week. The Coronet 18 opened to the public on Monday January 3, a combination of the new Coronet 9 which wends its way around a newly-developed area of Millbrook called Mill Farm, and the existing Coronet 9 holes.
Freephone 0800 10 24 24 Phone 027 562 3212 Address 14 Wolter Cr, Cromwell Email scott@excelscaffolding.co.nz
With the Remarkables 18 also in play, Millbrook is now one of only two golf courses in New Zealand to offer two distinctly different 18-hole courses. A golfer’s dream, the two courses will be played on alternate days by members and visitors. The launch coincided with the re-opening of the renovated Pro Shop and new village centre improvements, a $4million-plus infrastructure investment designed to improve the five-star golf and lifestyle resort’s guest experience and boost New Zealand golf tourism. That includes a new 1000sqm practice putting green, new golf cart storage barns and cart wash-down facilities for its expanded fleet, a 25m-wide tree lined boulevard, a redesigned arrival area, and a new porters shed. Millbrook’s Director of Property and Development Ben O’Malley says Millbrook members were given the first opportunity to play the new Coronet 18 and reactions had been fantastic. “They’re loving playing the new holes and we have strong bookings already in place for both 18’s,” he said, before the course opened. “Keen golfers are always enthusiastic for different experiences. They’re enjoying the higher elevations, rock faces, the lake, wetlands and stream area of the new course, which has a distinctly agrarian feel thanks to mobs of sheep wandering alongside the course in interlinking paddocks. “The smiles on the faces of members as they’ve played the course has made it well worth the effort of the last seven years of planning and development.” The new course was designed by former golf pro Greg Turner and Scott Macpherson, and includes what Millbrook believes to be the highest commercial golf tee in the country (the 12th tee on the Coronet 18) at 480 metres above sea level. “Millbrook is coming of age with the new Coronet course which represents a 21st century evolution, a more modern version, of previous courses,” says Turner. He anticipates the new Coronet 18 par-five 11th hole looking towards Coronet Peak will become one of the most photographed holes in New Zealand. Golf pros and amateurs playing in the New Zealand Open from March 31 to April 3 will experience the brand-new championship Coronet 18 when it makes its event debut

Arts+Culture The art – and fitness benefits – of the circus by Bethany Rogers
Once a form of entertainment reserved for a highly-trained few, the art of circus has quickly become a fitness trend. Since it was popularised by the Canadian circus troupe Cirque du Soleil in the 1990s, schools and studios teaching circus and aerial arts have sprung up around the world. In Queenstown, aerial arts teacher and founder of the Silk and Circus studio in Frankton, Lara Laverdure, says circus arts like aerial lyra, trapeze and silks, are a unique form of fitness. “It’s a really great sport for children – and adults – because it requires a lot of different skills to be able to engage with the different apparatus. You need strength, flexibility, you need spatial awareness and body awareness. This all needs to work together to be able to perform tricks and routines in the air. It’s challenging, but once you have your head around it, you can develop these skills and really have a lot of fun doing it. It’s a skill playground, really!” Lara fell in love with aerial arts in 2017. She runs a circus equipment business sourcing apparatus like lyra (a large hoop that is suspended from the ceiling), silks (strong, stretchy material that is also suspended from the ceiling) and trapeze. Lara was looking for a space to train in – aerial arts require a gym with a good ceiling height – when the perfect location sparked an idea for a circus school. “We had a lot of silks and I wanted to put up a few in a gym somewhere, just so that I and a few other aerial artists I knew could train. “Nobody goes into performing arts because they want to make a lot of money. You do it because you’re passionate and you want to share it with others. When we looked at renting our own space, we couldn’t find anything that fitted what we needed and was within our budget. So we started to ask like-minded people to see if we could share a space. “We asked quite a few different people, including the team at F45 gym at Red Oaks Drive who were really supportive but couldn’t accommodate us.
They recommended trying Pat Quaid’s Shukokai Karate next door – and that was the perfect fit. Pat had been looking for someone to share the space for quite a while. It’s a great dojo and a great space. It works really well.” Since 2019, Lara and her small team at Silk and Circus have offered classes for children and a place for adult aerialists to train and develop their skills. Lara, who has played the cello since she was 4 years old, says she came into circus arts “a bit uncoordinated”. “I was an active kid, but I never really did sports or fitness. My coordination skills were very specific to playing the cello! So learning the balance, strength, coordination and fitness that’s required to do aerials was really good for me. It is great to be able to teach that to kids. You use your entire brain and your entire body to perform. “Some people think it’s just an after-school entertainment, a bit of random fun, but it’s not. Focus and discipline are required and that’s what we try to teach the kids. There’s no room to think about an argument you’ve had or what you’re going to have for dinner. You have to be focused. We keep class sizes small and have a well-organised curriculum. We work with all the students to set individual goals and make sure they’re developing their skills and fitness.” Last month, the Silk and Circus students showcased their skills in a Mary Poppins themed show featuring aerial silks, lyra, hammock and trapeze with short theatrical performances before each aerial act. “Our circus and aerial kids put a lot of effort into their weekly class during term 4, learning their 3 to 5-minute routines in 8 weeks and their performances were outstanding! We were so pleased to be able to go ahead with the shows in times where a lot of events and competitions have been cancelled. It was great to see both the parents and the kids really enjoy themselves.” Term 1 classes for youth and adults are just about to start, with more information and bookings available at silkandcircus.co.nz.

Positive Gardening Initiatives I thought in this month’s column we could talk about some of the positive gardening initiatives going on in the district. Around our district there are lots of ‘community’ driven gardens, spaces for growing food, sharing produce and learning new skills. Most have a focus from allotments to food forests to a shared growing space. Below is a breakdown of some of those spaces and what they do or offer. Apologies if I’ve missed yours out. Get in touch and let me know more and we can give them a shout out and let the wider community know more.
Grow Wanaka Grow Wanaka is the new kid on the block. This is a small community garden that just celebrated its first birthday. I was down there the other day, blown away by how lush the garden is looking already. This is a space for learning, volunteering time to grow great food that is shared with gardeners and the local food bank. They also have onsite worm farms that will take food scraps. Run by volunteers with workshops sprinkled through the year. On Facebook.
Queenstown Harvest Community Gardens
Community Produce Stand
The longest running community garden in the region (over 12 years old) is the ‘Queenstown Harvest Community Gardens’. If you haven’t got up to their site on Gorge Road, make the effort, this is a big site that doubled due to growing demand about 5 years ago.
This is a project that has come out of the Local food security group in Wanaka. The first stand went live at the The Wanaka Community Hub a few weeks ago, with plans for these recognisable food stands to be placed at key spots around the community in the coming weeks and months.
The focus of these gardens is allotments in the great British tradition. Each allotment holder secures a garden plot for a small yearly fee, and off you go growing your own goodies. You’re surrounded by a mix of amateur to master gardeners all willing to share knowledge and expertise. The ‘how not too’s’ can never be underestimated in a gardener’s food growing career. Get in touch and see if they have any spare spots. They’re on Facebook.
Hawea Food Forest
How do these work? If you or somebody you know has surplus food growing in their garden they can take it down to one of these produce stands and place it on the stand. Then anybody can come along and take some of that surplus home. No exchange or money needed. This is awesome if you think of your own backyard, you might suddenly have 8 Cauliflowers all ripen at once, or a tree full of apples that can be shared with the wider community.
This has been going since about 2008, it is a mix of developing orchards/ food forest and in recent years has introduced allotments onto the space.
The idea is to keep them all looking similar with the bright orange so that they become recognisable around the district.
Located on the Hawea Domain there is huge potential to expand and plant out more food forest/orchards on this massive community owned space..
1.
Keep motivated. Summers upon us and it’s so easy to give your garden less attention. Book in a time once a week that is ‘veggie garden time.’
2.
Some of those crops you sowed back in September and October are ready to be eaten now and the month ahead. What are you eating next month and February and march. Sow some radishes in the spaces between other crops for quick turnaround. Get some seedlings in and start planting some future goodness.
3.
Great time to be making weed and comfrey teas. In a bin or bucket, load it up with thistles, nettles and comfrey. Fill to the top with water and leave for a few weeks. Then dilute 10 to 1 and feed some of those bigger vegetable plants. Tomatoes, pumpkins, zucchinis corn...
4.
If you have berry plants, now’s a good time to give them a mid season weed and mulch. Chop back any rogue raspberry canes. Lift this year’s Boysenberry/logan/tay/blackberry canes on to support wires. Keep up water to those bog loving blueberries.
5.
Chop and drop that comfrey. Either use as a mulch through the veggie garden or chop around fruit trees. This will encourage a second or third comfrey crop to grow.
6.
Bokashi buckets can be hard to bury at this time of year. A compost bin of some sort is another great place to put the contents of the mature bokashi bucket. Don’t forget to cover with a carbon ingredient. (shredded cardboard/woodchips/prunings etc..)
7.
Grass clippings are in full roar right now. Use as a mulch on any bare beds under shrubs around trees. The soil doesn’t like to be naked so cover it up!!! Remember to not put the clippings right up to the trunk so as not to damage.
Hawea is one of the fastest growing areas in the region, and with sections now in the 200 to 400 sqm range, spaces like the Hawea Food forest are only going to come more in demand. Food resilience for our communities is a top priority. How do we supply our community with locally grown affordable produce? Run by volunteers with monthly working bees and workshops sprinkled through the year. On Facebook
Few gardening tips for the weeks ahead:
Happy gardening!.
