Surprise at Government’s actions on Three Waters
Like most of you, I was astounded on Wednesday last week, to hear the advice from central government that they had decided to mandate their Three Waters programme. This effectively removes ownership of water assets from council control. No one will argue that there can be a better job done in managing Three Waters. Personally, I don’t think the mistakes made in relation to the Havelock North disaster a few years ago have been adequately addressed in some quarters, but in general terms it must be recognised that councils throughout New Zealand do a damn good job in managing these assets. All councils are financially constrained, in our case particularly so given the current effects of Covid-19 on our economy. Therefore, while we’d like to spend more money on our water systems, there are constraints. This could be addressed by a better funding model and recognition that these are critical assets. In looking at the proposal for the management of Three Waters by the four entities throughout New Zealand, I see some parallels with the health sector. A few years ago, it was decided that DHB’s around New Zealand could manage health assets better than they had been in the past. Of recent times it’s been decided that the new system didn’t work particularly well, and we’re going back to a centralised model. I fear that the same thing might happen with waters management in the future. Currently, assets are owned by councils on behalf of their communities. I am surprised that some at central government think they can be handled effectively under the new proposal. Another factor that doesn’t seem to have been taken into account to date, is the many privately-owned water supplies around New Zealand - particularly in our district. Many of the current owners of those supplies are keen for council to pick them up, recognising the cost of maintaining them, and in the liability issues surrounding potable water. As I understand it, close to 20% of New Zealanders still get their water from private supplies. What is to happen to those in the future? Will they be centralised as well? There is also a lot of controversy around the governance of the four water controlling entities in the future. These will be very large businesses. It is massively important that these businesses attract New Zealand’s top directors (if they are to be created) and those boards attract top management. Will that happen? Government entities sometimes struggle to get quality directors (mainly because they don’t pay them particularly well and don’t treat them all that well either) and for this reason again, I’m concerned for the future operation of these businesses. All in all, I’m disappointed that government didn’t further engage with councils and look for a better solution than simply acquiring these assets by force.

Fury over water mandate by Paul Taylor
Queenstown leaders are up in arms about the Government’s plans to force through its three waters reform. Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta announced last Wednesday that councils will have no choice over the transfer of the management of their billions of dollars’ worth of freshwater, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure to four regional bodies. Queenstown National MP Joseph Mooney said it was a “sad day for democracy” in New Zealand. “It is extraordinary to see the Labour Government push through legislation to allow the establishment of four entities which will strip councils of their ownership and control of local water assets,” Mooney says. “This is an asset grab and a clear case of the Government again doing whatever it wants regardless of how strongly New Zealanders object to their overwhelming desire for centralisation.
“Councils throughout Aotearoa New Zealand have invested significant time, effort and resources engaging with integrity and good intent, including staff and elected members at QLDC. “That’s despite a questionable TV and press advertising campaign, deep uncertainty and a lack of information, and the inevitable and understandable public reaction to the proposed new model that almost completely removes local government from having any role or voice in the management of wastewater, water supply and stormwater.” Boult said the council expected more discussion, with the opportunity for local public consultation. “That opportunity has been taken away and a completely different pathway is now before us all.” Councillors approved QLDC’s position statement on 28 September, confirming it would “actively oppose” any mandatory reform. Mahuta has said a working group of local government, iwi and water industry experts will be set up to work through design of how the new entities will operate. The original plan was for each to be managed by a board, which would in turn be elected by a separate group set up by councils and Māori. The aim is to provide better, more resilient services at a lower cost. “These changes might not be popular but they are necessary,” the Minister said. “The easiest thing is to do nothing, but I am not taking that option.” Mayors and council bosses from across Southland and Otago collectively wrote to Mahuta to formally request more time to engage with their communities, during the submissions process, calling it “the biggest decision of our lifetimes”. But that was rejected and Mahuta has now U-turned on the promise councils could opt out if they chose. Queenstown Lakes mayor Jim Boult said Mahuta’s announcement felt like a “knee jerk reaction”.

Queenstown council boss Mike Theelen has been given a $20k a year pay rise. The chief executive, who’s been in the role since 2016, will see his pay packet rise from $356,619 per annum to a whopping $376,289. That’s $1,447 a day, not including weekends. Councillors approved the 5.5% pay increase on Thursday, following the standard annual performance review. Mayor Jim Boult said the raise reflected Theelen’s commitment, performance and leadership through Covid-19.

Major new downhill bike track for resort by Paul Taylor
Queenstown will boast the longest single-track mountain bike descent in New Zealand by the time the summer season gets underway. Construction of Upper Rude Rock Trail at Coronet Peak, which was approved by the Department of Conservation in 2005, is expected to be finished by December 11. As part of Queenstown Mountain Bike Club’s long term strategic plan, the new Grade 4 track will connect with world-renowned Rude Rock Trail, before joining onto Hot Rod which takes riders to the valley floor. The 1200m ride from top-to-bottom is understood to be the longest vertical metres of single-track descent in New Zealand. Ski Area Manager Nigel Kerr has tucked his skis away and is fizzing for an epic summer season ahead. “One of the things that draws people back to Coronet Peak is the vibe,” Kerr says. “The facilities and the amphitheatre at the base all contribute to an exceptional experience. A mountain bike shuttle will be offered from the base of Hot Rod to the Coronet Peak base building, as part of Coronet Peak’s operations.
The peak has a mix of events lined up for summer, from the Craft Beer & BBQ Summit, several running events and some full-noise mountain biking staples.
The shuttle will operate on the hour from 11am till 4pm. Rides start from $8 with multiride options available
The Coronet Express Gondola and Café 1200 will be operating throughout summer, including until 8pm on Thursdays.

The filter acts as a drip reactor, sieving through the socially correct reply to the mouth. Providing the words in saliva to speak coherently. Not everybody’s filter system is perfect. Some are dirty, some have holes in it. I’ve lost mine all together! It sounds like your dumb questions are slipping through the filter system without the brain properly solving the task. The unknown things has your brain startled. It’s reactively pinging the mouth to default to the easy option of; ‘ask for help’ before you test the brain’s ability to figure it out. Ahem, before we continue, I’m not saying asking for help is wrong but it does fatigue the person when their co-work bleats for ‘heeellllp’ on the daily. Especially when the task is of a pre-school standard. The reality is, our advanced species has far too much information to navigate and problem solve getting thrown at us by the second. We’re progressing, yes. But the bar level of smart has just skyrocketed up. I mean, quantum flipping out. Robots, technology, genetic advancements, cures, new galactic discoveries. Not everyone in society is keeping up with the nerds of today. Brain fit and physically poor (more often than not). Keeping up with the intellegible Jones’s has us all emotionally unhinged. No doubt about it. Thankfully these smart weedy brains have provided us with a tool to uplift this generation of homosapiens. ‘GOOGLE’. Yes, google. Don’t know it? Google it. Our interweb has the unlimited capacity to update and process new information and the staggering ability to hold it too. It’s the machincial mind. Humans have been feeding and utilising this interweb to help store information and access it when we are wifi connected. This incredible, publicly accessed machine will help you with most of your dumb questions. Promise! I was given this piece of advance as a bona fide nonfiltered human and it changed my life, particularly in the office. I can’t assure that all answers will be right, it is up to the invdividual to determine but it may provide a better foundation to solving the problem or providing an answer to your question. Now that I’ve given you a solution, I will say this truth. Dumb questions are only human. We are, who we are. We’re not a robot... yet. Dumb questions need to be asked sometimes to help get us back down to ground level. It’s okay to let the odd one slip one through just for fun every once and awhile.

Queenstown tops vax tables by Paul Taylor
Queenstown Lakes is the most vaccinated place in the country. Latest figures from the Ministry of Health, published on Friday, show the district tops the table for both the percentage of the population who are fully vaccinated and who’ve had one dose. Some 83.13% of the 35,862 eligible population are now fully vaccinated. And a further 14.17% have had only their first jab, which means there are just 2.7% of the population 12-and-over who remain unvaccinated. Dunedin takes second place in the fully vaccinated table, followed by Wellington, Marlborough, Central Otago and Auckland. There were 303 new community cases over the weekend, the majority in Auckland, but none in Christchurch following four cases late last week. A Christchurch case reported on Saturday was reclassified as a historical case following serology results. Some 90% of the Christchurch eligible population have had their first dose and 9000 doses were given on Saturday alone. In Queenstown, mayor Jim Boult has put out a challenge to get 95% of the eligible population in the district fully immunised against Covid-19 with two doses by Christmas. And with cases in Blenheim and Christchurch last week, Southern Medical Officer of Health Dr Michael Butchard is urging the public to get tested if they are sick, get vaccinated and follow level 2 rules. “It is not if, but when we get a case in the Southern district and I cannot emphasise enough the importance of staying home and getting tested if people have any COVID-19 symptoms, however mild.” On Sunday, NZ reached two milestones with more than 75% of eligible people now fully vaccinated and 84% in Auckland District Health Board (DHB) area. DHB areas need to reach 90% fully vaccinated to move to the Government’s traffic light system. Southern DHB area is fourth in the table, with 77.18%, a further 12.54% on one dose, and 10.28% unvaccinated. Auckland leads, by DHB, with Waitemata second, and Capital and Coast third.

Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
So at last our timid government has taken some tiny, tentative steps - MIQ will only last 7 days plus 3 days of self isolation. It’s not nearly bold enough. They should have 3 weeks MIQ for unvaccinated NZers, and offer early release if they have vaccination while in there. Vaccinated non residents (visitors - remember them?) with negative tests could choose from a selection of hotels happy to host new arrivals for a week, and make sure they aren’t out and about too much. Vaccinated New Zealanders should just be able to self isolate at home, especially given that people WITH covid are allowed to do just that. A couple of years ago, I had breast cancer - it was 5 months of chemo, 5 days for surgery, 5 weeks of radiotherapy. I didn’t mind any of it as I knew it was all essential. Any time I queried the treatment, the responses were rapid and rational. MIQ is the opposite - even when vaccines were unavailable, only 1% of returnees in MIQ tested positive. Dunedin’s brilliant Sir Ian Taylor, the greatest innovator in NZ business despairs of the government’s inability to consider livelihoods as well as lives. They go together. The terrible death rates overseas happened when there weren’t vaccines, and even though this govt and many before it, haven’t done nearly enough to upgrade our health system, New Zealand will be much more lightly affected given that most people are vaccinated now. I’m so excited about getting back to the wonderful Wakatipu and out of this lunatic asylum where the lunatics are running it. Actually the staff are all good people, but they have stupid jobs. People in the “wellbeing” team (I’m not making this up) ring us constantly to see how we’re feeling. I think they choose people with high, saccharine voices so they sound like children, and so we won’t reply to their inane questioning with “I’ve got a really sore hand from trying to stab my husband to death with the blunt knife provided”. There’s one particularly annoying one who replied to each one of my long list of complaints with, a piping little “I hear you”. I felt like asking her if she was testing her hearing aids. Mrs Crotchety of Queenstown is probably not the most popular prisoner here. There are good things about being here - one is having good (not as good as Queenstown) cappucinos delivered to our room (we do have to pay, but it’s still a thrill) and the other is... now I’ve forgotten. I’ve been listening to deliciously naughty Miriam Margolyes being interviewed by my favourites - our own Kim Hill and Louis Theroux. It’s quite hard to laugh with a mask on and I’m getting some strange looks as I stomp round the highly fenced and patrolled outside area chortling away. I can’t wait to read MM’s memoir - what a wicked old bird! And Kim Hill also interviewed Joanna Lumley about the book “A Queen for All Seasons” that has just been published to celebrate HM’s 70 years of the weirdest life in the world. I had to download it immediately, and I’m totally hooked - all sorts of different people telling stories about their experience of meeting HM. I won’t have time for any listening to podcasts or reading once I’m home - I’m desperate to see my garden and eat fresh asparagus and have REAL cappucinos and Patagonia ice cream, but best of all, and which I’d never appreciated so much before, our beautiful, fresh air and freedom.

Russian Hackers Return A group of Russia-backed hackers responsible for last year’s widespread SolarWinds attack has reportedly been targeting hundreds of companies and organizations in recent months, despite the threat of sanctions. Microsoft announced last Monday the group, known as Nobelium, has been stepping up cyberattacks against tech companies resulting in more than 140 attacks since May, including at least 14 breaches where data was stolen. The latest hacking campaign has been targeting cloud computing and managed service providers in the US and Europe to obtain sensitive information and disrupt the global IT supply chain. The attacks come even after the Biden administration imposed several financial sanctions on Russia and expelled near a dozen diplomats. The moves have done little to slow the attacks–Microsoft reported more than 600 companies attacked since July 1.

Fully Vaccinated Australians given green light to travel internationally again The federal government has removed the need for fully vaccinated Australians to ask for permission to leave the country from Monday, but those who are unvaccinated will still have to seek an exemption if they want to leave. When the government closed the international border in March last year it also barred Australians from leaving the country unless they had an exemption. Health Minister Greg Hunt announced that from November 1, anyone who was fully vaccinated could leave as they pleased. “Australian citizens and permanent residents who want to travel overseas will need to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated with a [Therapeutic Goods Administration]-approved or recognised vaccine, with the second dose occurring at least seven days prior to travel,” he said. Australian telecommunications giant Telstra is to buy Pacific arm of Digicel with Canberra’s support amid China’s rising influence Telstra and the Australian government have finalised a deal to buy and operate the largest telecommunications company in the Pacific, in a move largely seen as an effort to counter China’s influence in the region. The $2.1 billion deal to acquire and run Digicel Pacific is being funded largely by the government, which will provide $1.9 billion toward the acquisition. Telstra said it would contribute $360 million and own 100 per cent of the company’s ordinary equity. Digicel, founded by Irish billionaire Denis O’Brien, is the largest mobile phone carrier in the Pacific with operations in Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu, Tonga and Nauru. The company makes more than $300 million a year in profit. ABC

Green light for Ladies Mile masterplan by Paul Taylor
High density development along picturesque Ladies Mile is a step closer, despite overwhelming opposition from nearby residents. On Thursday, Queenstown Lakes councillors voted to adopt their $1.4 million masterplan, which seeks to control what can be built on privatelyowned land between Shotover Bridge and Lake Hayes. It envisages up to 2,400 apartments and houses, along with schools, shops, offices and community facilities. Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult, the public and some councillors had raised major concerns about the impact that would have on already congested roads, along with other issues, when the masterplan was tabled in July. Instead of adopting it then, councillors instead ordered a report which investigated a ‘staged zoning approach’, which restricts development until certain triggers are met, such as workable transport solutions. That report was before the council on Thursday. Anita Golden, chair of the Lake Hayes and Shotover Country Community Association, speaking in the public forum said it was disappointing to see all of the key issues had still not been addressed. They include transport, the suitability of a greenfield site for high density, the cost of infrastructure, the environment and the council’s ability to ensure developers stick to the masterplan. “There does not appear to be any discernible difference to what was proposed in July and what is in your information today,” she said. The report, while rejecting approaches such as Future Urban Zoning, does set out some transport infrastructure required, including a roundabout at the Howards Drive turnoff to Lake Hayes Estate. Golden called for more specific measures, such as queue-length measurement and public transport usage numbers. And she asked: “Where is the review of the density and if this is the right place for the proposed level of density, reviewing on a people first basis, live, play and work?” Despite that, there was a reluctant acceptance from councillors who had previously questioned the masterplan that it was, in effect, better than doing
nothing and allowing developer carte blanche. Wanaka councillor Quentin Smith, highly critical in July, said one landowner had already gone on their own and started developing. Groundworks have begun on the high-end, lifestyle-block Koko Ridge subdivision, on land between Shotover Country and Shotover River. A previous application for a medium density ‘Laurel Hills’ development there was rejected last year, due to traffic concerns. “The risk of not doing this will be to continue to achieve those things that are undesirable... and that is equally unpalatable,” Smith said. Boult, who’s lived in that area for 40 years, said he’d prefer the area not to be developed, but appreciated that was a “naïve desire”. “I have come to the conclusion, as many of you have, that we are better to be holding the steering wheel on this through this masterplan than we are than to simply let development ad-hoc, with no uniformity,” Boult said. He was disappointed no progress has been made on addressing traffic and called for NZTA to step up its efforts. The report highlighted the development will naturally occur over a 12-15 year timeframe, which Boult said will come around “in the blink of an eye”. Both Cr Val Miller and Cr Penny Clark, who were on the working group, spoke in favour of the masterplan, as did Cr Glyn Lewers, on behalf of renters unable to get on the property ladder. But Cr Craig Ferguson said the community had made their feelings clear and he couldn’t see a solution. He was the only councillor who voted against the masterplan being adopted, with the other seven councillors and the mayor voting in favour. Deputy Mayor Calum MacLeod was absent. There is still work to do for council staff, though. They have to report back in March on planning provisions surrounding the masterplan and some other matters to be resolved, including a potential bird study and ways to limit residential visitor accommodation in the new developments.

Running can work wonders for Mental Health
How does exercise help mental health? Despite all of these findings connecting exercise to improved mental health, most researchers continue to offer a “we’re not quite sure why” understanding about what connects the dots. If you’re reading this you probably already have a sense that running and exercise are key components of your physical and mental well-being, but if asked how your regular run aids in your mental health, what would you say? For the regular runners the improvement in how we feel when we exercise is self-evident, and trying to figure out why, isn’t important.
Movement can positively shift perception Exercise fundamentally shifts our perception. Movement can help sort through concerns and see things from a new perspective. And it’s this impact that may serve as one of the key ingredients that improve our mental health. Mental health requires a healthy repetition of believing we are capable.
Clinical psychologists specialising in athletes mental health and performance see firsthand how powerful movement is for our individual and collective well-being. They often hear statements along the lines of “running is my therapy” and “movement is medicine” that anecdotally attest to just how powerful exercise is for managing stress and working through hardships individuals face. While running and exercise on a more general level are not direct replacements for professional counseling or therapy, there are many therapeutic components inherent to a regular exercise or running program. Those that maintain a regular rhythm of movement in their lives verify the powerful impact on mood, emotional well-being, and overall mental health. Researchers continue to look closely at links between exercise and mental health, including the possible protective mechanisms for concerns such as anxiety and depression, helping them move from anecdotal to more fact based conclusions.
Running provides a means in which this is regularly attainable, and allows a shift in self-talk from a narration of “I can’t” to “I can.” Empowerment and discipline are key factors in our mental health, and exercise builds upon both of these every time we lace up our running shoes.
Self-determination is the key Self-determination is likely another important psychological ingredient. The willingness to persevere in the face of hardship uplifts the spirit, in turn teaching us that we can do hard things. If depression is a paucity of hope, running requires you to muster both courage and determination to succeed. The beauty of this is that difficulty is relative to each of us, yet the pursuit of purposefully working through a challenge is simultaneously understood by all runners who face the same obstacles, albeit at different paces or distances. The social understanding, connection, and camaraderie we forge with others who understand the power of running adds another layer in that feeling. It can provide a sense of connection to something much larger than ourselves.
What do studies suggest about running and Commitment to goals Finally, pursuing and ultimately achieving goals on a regular basis reinforces mental health? meaning and purpose which are fundamentally central to psychological wellOne study, A Scoping Review of the Relationship between Running and Mental Health, was published in November 2020 and used data from 116 studies. When they drilled through the results, they found a total of 16 studies that looked at mental health factors for runners compared to non-runners, finding that “runners had lower depression and anxiety, lower stress, higher psychological well-being, and better mood compared to non-runners.” 11 studies indicated a single bout of running, even on a treadmill leads to positive differences in mental health outcomes, including reductions in anxiety and total mood disturbance. And longer-term programs implementing walking and/or jogging ranging from 2-20 weeks showed consistent support in improved mood and lowered stress reactivity, with particular findings supporting longer-term exercise interventions for those known to struggle with depression.

Exercise as not the panacea for mental health treatment, while at the same time strongly endorsing it as a necessary treatment arm for those struggling with just about any mental health condition. There’s plenty of anecdotal and scientific evidence to support beginning, continuing, or maintaining an exercise plan in your daily life. The data is pretty clear that even a single bout of movement will likely have an immediate, short-term positive impact on your mental health. It’s important to permit yourself to start wherever you are, with whatever capacity makes sense. A 5-minute walk is a great place to start.

What is Food Rescue Ride?
Every local knows the great work Happiness House does around Queenstown.
We all know that our wee town has an abundance of super high quality cafes and bakeries. These guys all value great quality and only want to serve the freshest goodies daily. This often means there are some items which are leftover at the end of the day. We’ve teamed up with some of our most loved local eateries to rescue any surplus food from going to waste. This food will then be distributed to local charities and organisiations who are helping feed our most vulnerable communities. Groups we work with include: Happiness House, Baskets of Blessing, Wakatipu Youth Trust and Mana Tahuna Charitible Trust.
Why is it needed? Every year in New Zealand, tonnes of perfectly edible food ends up in landfill, while many Kiwis are living with inadequate access to good and nutritious food. We’re aiming to tackle both of these issues and help make sure that Queenstowns’ food gets eaten - not binned!
How does it work? We’ve been lucky enough to grab a shiny new E-Bike - complete with built-in storage containers to help power this new project. Our riders will pedal to our partner cafes 3 times per week to collect the surplus food from the previous day. Then we’ll divide it up between our recipient charities depending on their needs.

The bike will be stored securely in the Queenstown CBD area and you will have access to it and our saftey gear (own helmets are fine) You’ll be given a run-sheet which tells you which cafes to visit. The bike will have built-in storage for the food and when you return the bike you’ll just need to leave the food at the clearly marked collection point ready for our truck driver to collect later that day - Simple! It’s an E-bike so any small hills will be a breeze and it’s a fun way to get outdoors and be involved in a worthwhile community cause. We estimate the ride should take around one hour to complete so wether it’s your break or your day off, you’ll have plenty of time left to get on with the rest of your day, feeling good after your good deed!

Arts+Culture Book highlight: After the Tampa by Bethany Rogers Twenty years ago, the Taliban were at the height of their power in Afghanistan. Seven-year-old Abbas Nazari and his Hazaras Afghan family were concerned. War was coming. The Taliban had been persecuting and sometimes killing people of ethnic minorities, including Hazaras. So the family made the difficult decision to sell their belongings and flee the county. He and his family crossed mountains and borders and eventually made it to the boat his parents had paid so much money to get on. The small, dilapidated fishing boat was overloaded with more than 400 others seeking asylum on board. Despite their reservations about the state of the boat, the family had no other choice. When the boat started to sink, a cargo ship called the Tampa answered the emergency call. What followed was one of the largest maritime rescues in modern history – and an international standoff with the Australian government, who refused to take in the ship and the asylum seekers. Many of those rescued by the Tampa became inmates of Nauru Island, under Australia’s hard-line offshore detention policy. Abbas Nazari’s family, however, were some of the lucky few to be resettled in New Zealand. Now a Fulbright Scholar with a Master’s in Security Studies, Abbas Nazari has written a memoir about his family’s experiences, called After the Tampa. “It’s a personal memoir of my family’s journey. From fleeing Afghanistan to eventually building a new life in New Zealand. Sometimes it reads like a political thriller, other times it reads like the diary of an angsty teenager,” explains Abbas. The 20-year anniversary of the rescue and misunderstandings about the refugee experience prompted Abbas to write down his and his family’s experience.
“People have heard of refugees or they’re vaguely aware of them but they don’t know the full refugee experience or their story. Here was a chance for me to tell it from my perspective. I wanted to inform people about the refugee experience. “The main message of the book has to be: we often read and see so much about refugees, but you hardly ever meet one or hear their perspective. This was a chance for me to tell my story of what it was like to be a little kid and as a family on the Tampa. People can piece that together with the media and the commentary surrounding the events at the time. “[…] I also wanted to highlight the different approaches taken to refugees. That New Zealand was willing to offer a hand to 150 of us, whereas Australia shut the door on us.” After the Tampa was released in August this year and Abbas has been touring New Zealand and talking about his book and the issues it brings up. He attended events in Queenstown and Cromwell last week. “The response has been incredibly humbling and overwhelming in many ways. Many people recall the Tampa affair, but hearing it from my perspective, they’ve said ‘wow, I had no idea’. And not just about this particular incident, but more generally the situation facing Afghans and why Afghanistan is in the state that it is in… why people leave in the first place. “[…] People also often say they had no idea how refugees are treated or talked about in Australia. I think it holds a mirror up to Australians and their approach to refugees and that’s one of the commentaries I always receive from Australians who say: ‘I always knew that our refugee policies are horrendous but here it is in full.’ “Conversely, New Zealanders learn that we could probably do a bit more… our refugee numbers are tiny, but at the same time, we do pretty damn well with regards to the few people who are lucky enough to get resettled to New Zealand.” Abbas continues to tour the South Island. On 12th November, Helen Clark, NZ Prime Minister at the time of the Tampa affair, will appear via video link with Abbas Nazari at Christchurch WORD Festival. The event will go ahead under Level 2. After the Tampa is available in most bookshops and is published by Allen & Urwin.

Microsoft starts pestering customers who haven’t installed Windows 11 yet In a very Microsoft-like move, the company recently started pushing the PC Health Check app onto all Windows 10 users through regular software updates. This once optional app said whether or not devices can run the new Windows 11 release, but now it looks like Microsoft is being more aggressive with the rollout, aiming to nudge owners to upgrade. The controversial app was originally one of the main ways Microsoft released TMP requirements for Windows 11. Now it looks like another way for the company to remind and nag users to install its latest software.

So, what is iCloud+? What do you get, and why should you use it? What is iCloud+? iCloud+ is a suite of additional services designed to supplement the existing features of Apple’s online iCloud service. Despite its name, it doesn’t cost any more than before but is only available to those on paid plans. The free 5GB tier doesn’t get these additional features. The upgraded service adds useful security enhancements, including iCloud Private Relay (still in beta), Hide My email, and improved support for HomeKit Secure Video. Why should you use iCloud+? These new features are designed to help keep users secure. That security extends from protecting Safari browsing sessions all the way to ensuring marketers can’t easily gather information about you. If you care about your privacy, these features should be helpful. They may also have implications for enterprises, while the iCloud Custom domain tool should come in handy for small business users. With iCloud, you automatically get 5GB of free iCloud storage for your photos, videos, files, and more. If you want more storage and premium features, you can upgrade to iCloud+ from any of your devices.
Apple Polishing Cloth - Seriously, what the heck? Apple has started selling a glorified microfiber cloth dubbed the “Polishing Cloth.” Why, no one seems to know. Let’s be honest here, you probably already have microfiber cloths in your home. Every third gadget you buy, your glasses, and even some toys come with one for free. But none of them are like the Apple Polishing cloth. For one, it has the Apple Logo! It might be made of better materials? According to the company, the Polishing Cloth is “made with soft, nonabrasive material, the Polishing Cloth cleans any Apple display, including nano-texture glass, safely and effectively.” According to the reviews however, it doesn’t even do the job of cleaning your screen very well, so don’t rush out and buy one, just stick with the perfectly acceptable unbranded cloths you already have at home.

Why Jacinda Ardern’s ‘clumsy’ leadership response to Delta could still be the right approach Authors: Suze Wilson, Senior Lecturer, Executive Development, Massey University
Leading people through the pandemic is clearly no easy task. But does the criticism currently directed at New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern reveal a major misstep on her part, or something deeper about the nature of leadership itself? Ardern has previously won widespread praise for her COVID-19 response and crisis communication, topping Fortune magazine’s “world’s greatest leaders” list in 2021. Focused on minimising harm to both lives and livelihoods, her pandemic leadership has comprised three main strands: reliance on expert advice, mobilising collective effort and cushioning the pandemic’s disruptive effects. These built the trust needed to secure high levels of voluntary compliance for measures designed to limit the spread of the virus. Then came the Delta outbreak in mid-August, which sees Auckland still under lockdown measures nearly eight weeks later. Despite the efforts of many, elimination proved elusive – a daunting reality that Ardern and her cabinet colleagues appear to have accepted.
A strategic shift This shift by Ardern, who engages deeply with the scientific evidence, has confused and angered many, even those who normally support her. With vaccination rates climbing, in early October, Ardern announced the beginning of a “gradual transition” away from the established “zero COVID” strategy in favour of suppression of inevitable outbreaks.
“Clumsy” leadership To make matters worse, there simply aren’t tried and trusted solutions that can resolve or dissolve such problems. Instead, they require leaders to accustom people to uncomfortable and disruptive changes to established ways of thinking and acting. Unsurprisingly, many leaders avoid facing up to such difficulties, requiring as it does the cobbling together of a range of imperfect responses to everchanging circumstances. It requires constant engagement, mobilising people to help craft a way forward. Leaders can’t and don’t have all the answers to such problems. Whatever answers they do have likely need to keep changing as things unfold. The best possible scenario is what Grint calls a “clumsy” solution – a patchwork of adaptive initiatives that blunt the problem’s worst effects. Only genuinely transformative change can truly overcome these wicked or adaptive problems in the long run.
Conflict and criticism are inevitable In the meantime, “clumsy” leadership will typically trigger conflict between leaders and citizens (or employees in a work setting), and among those people too. There will be blame, recrimination, avoidance, denial, grief, “what ifs” and “if onlys”, as people struggle to deal with the changes needed. Indeed, all these very normal responses have characterised much of the commentary about the Ardern government’s decision to change tack.
This included a three-step “roadmap” to guide Auckland “carefully” towards reduced restrictions. What criteria will be used to trigger movement through those steps, however, have not been specified.
That criticism, however, doesn’t mean she has failed in her leadership responsibilities. Instead, she has required the population to face up to an adaptive challenge. It’s unavoidably contentious and painful.
Both the strategic shift and the roadmap’s ambiguity have become the source of heated debate. But beyond merely choosing sides, how can we make sense of Ardern’s leadership at this point?
For all that we can debate whether different decisions could or should have been made, the difficulties involved in facing the new reality are unavoidable.
Wicked and adaptive problems The pandemic presents a particular type of problem for political leaders, described as “wicked” or “adaptive” by leadership experts Keith Grint and Ronald Heifetz, respectively. Basically, wicked or adaptive problems have complex and contentious causes, generating equally complex and contentious responses. Their “wickedness” isn’t fundamentally a question of morality, although they do typically entail making values-based choices. Rather, it refers to how difficult they are to contend with. Poverty, the housing crisis and climate change are other good examples of these kinds of problems. Wicked/adaptive problems don’t have clear boundaries, nor are they static. They have multiple dynamic dimensions. Their effects typically spill out into many parts of our lives and organisations, creating confusion, harmful consequences and disruption to established routines.
To help people navigate this, Ardern is seeking to “regulate distress”, as Heifetz recommends. She has repeatedly assured people a cautious approach remains in place and has appeared not to have been distracted by the criticism. Instead, she has stayed focused on mobilising the individual and collective effort to follow the rules and get vaccinated.
Least-worst options Wicked/adaptive problems are not amenable to resolution by way of quick, easy or elegant answers. They aren’t fixed by recourse to command and control, although some top-down decisions are needed. They entail ambiguity and uncertainty, a constant piecing together of efforts to outflank, mitigate or adapt, giving rise to inevitably imperfect or “clumsy” solutions. Asking people to adjust to efforts to achieve the least-worst outcome possible from a range of unpalatable options may not be the easiest path to political popularity. But it is arguably what responsible leaders do.

Hiring rebounds in October. Hiring difficulties continue and business expantion along with start ups are adding to the pressure employers are enduring when looking for staff. As a result the number of jobs advertised in October returned to numbers that were seen in the three months prior to the August lockdown announcement. This is only half of what the market would tradionally have expected in 2019 and 2018, but it does attest to the anecdotal feedback from employers that Queenstown is returning to a market where candidates have plenty of options. Maintenance Person - Full time, $24 p/h You will be responsible for the effective organization of day to day maintenance operations within the property. This is a very hands on role, and requires a diverse range of basic trade skills. This position is Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm.
