Community-led water action
Shaping our Future’s Whakatipu Water Taskforce presented their final report this week, which sets out key recommendations towards achieving the community’s freshwater vision for the Whakatipu. Shaping our Future helps to shape the future of our district by advocating to governing bodies such as Queenstown Lakes District Council and Otago Regional Council. Shaping our Future uses a proven process of café-style forums, followed by the creation of a community taskforce to research and discuss a wide range of information, to generate recommendations that reflect community consensus. Forums held in 2018 on the topic of freshwater led to the creation of water taskforces in both Whakatipu and Wānaka. The Wānaka report contained recommendations in three key areas; Leadership and Management, Community Culture and Research and Monitoring. The Whakatipu taskforce’s vision is for freshwater to exist in its natural state, support and sustain life and wellbeing, and demonstrate resilience. The report looks at what is impacting on our waterways today and identifies actions that can be taken to achieve this vision. The challenges identified in the report highlight both the needs of the water and the needs of the community. The challenges for water include contamination from rural and urban runoff, the clearance of land around waterways, drainage of wetland areas, development of areas that were previously farmland, contamination from wastewater, impacts on native species, water extraction and invasive organisms.

The challenges for the community include protecting natural water flows, fostering a community culture where water is valued in its natural state, ensuring infrastructure is fit for purpose, maintaining both recreation and economic benefits, ensuring that land use change is closely managed and developing policies and plans that prioritise the needs of the water. The report identifies an urgent need for the development of an active, community inclusive water management process, supported by appropriate levels of research to better understand the catchments and aquatic ecosystems in the Whakatipu Basin. The critical recommendation is for the formation of a new group comprised of key stakeholders, tasked with developing a Whakatipu Freshwater Management Plan. Both water taskforces are consistent in their recommendations for the Upper Clutha and Whakatipu basins. The Wānaka water taskforce noted that achieving their longterm vision of “Pure Water, Healthy Eco-systems, Engaged Community” would involve regulatory agencies, land owners, national and local organisations, business owners, tourist operators, residents and visitors. Similarly, the Whakatipu water taskforce report suggests that a district wide collaboration and integration approach is needed. It will take all of us working together to safeguard the future of our waterways and protect what we all value. Urgency, expertise, education and effort now will clear the way for a cleaner and more pristine future for our water and its users. Crankworx heads south by Payl Taylor

Major international mountain bike festival Crankworx has confirmed it is coming to Queenstown Lakes.
“I’m super stoked to be heading to these unique riding destinations,” Rotorua professional mountain biker Keegan Wright said.
The adrenalin-fuelled Crankworx World Tour is held each year in Rotorua, Canadian resort Whistler and Innsbruck, Austria, attracting the biggest names in the sport. It also runs races across four other resorts in British Columbia.
“With each spot having totally different terrain to the other it’s gonna make for awesome racing. I’m looking forward to getting to share these times with all of the Crankworx family.”
Now organisers have announced a summer series for Queenstown, Wānaka and Alexandra in late November and early December 2021. International riders will mix it with locals in downhill, Super D, air downhill and pump track races.
There will be race categories for professionals, amateurs and young racers. Details of registration will be released soon via @crankworxrotorua on Instagram or Facebook. The event has received $50,000 from Queenstown Lakes District Council’s annual events fund, and is also backed by the Southern Lakes Regional Events Fund.
The series will run from November 27 to December 12, with racing in Queenstown on December 4 and 5. Crankworx Rotorua event director Ariki Tibble says the mountain bike festival has played a key role in raising the profile of Rotorua as a destination over the past six years. “We know how powerful this has been for the region, and this is the first opportunity we’ve had to unlock some of these benefits for other regions in our country,” Tribble said. “The mountain biking in Central Otago, Queenstown and Wānaka region is out of this world, not to mention its world-renowned scenery and epic summers.. “We can’t wait to bring a grassroots version of our Crankworx Festival to the south.” In Queenstown, there’ll be a downhill at Skyline and a pump-track race at an as-yet unconfirmed venue, potentially at the Kerry Drive site, up Queenstown hill. Other locations include Cardrona Alpine Resort, where there’ll be an ‘air downhill’, and Wanaka’s Bike Glendhu, which will feature dual slalom racing. There’ll also be racing at Matangi Station Mountain Bike Park, Alexandra. Two events (the Queenstown Pump Track and Wānaka Dual Slalom) will be live broadcast on crankworx.com during the series, with photo and video highlights available of the other three events. Queentown emerges blinking into Alert Level 2 by Payl Taylor
Queenstowners returned to the mountains last Wednesday, as the town’s businesses got back up and running under Alert Level 2. NZSki boss Paul Anderson says attempting to give season pass holders value for money was one of the motivation factors to reopening both The Remarkables and Coronet Peak, despite few tourists. Locals paid upwards of $699 (early bird) for season-long access to Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Mt Hutt, and had enjoyed about seven weeks of skiing and snowboarding before lockdown hit. “They commit to us at the start of the season,” Anderson says. “Sometimes we’re not going to be open, but we always make every effort.

There was some concern among locals the ski fields would not be able to open at all at level 2, after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the cap on 100 people in outdoor venues. “That did cause some confusion,” Anderson says. “There was a bit of traffic on social media saying ‘are you only going to be allowed 100 people?’, but that’s for defined areas or events - there’s 400 hectares out [at Coronet] there so plenty of space for people.” NZSki has worked with Cardrona / Treble Cone and Ruapehu Alpine Lifts Limited to interpret the Government’s guidelines for ski fields, he says, developing their own protocols for the industry, including mask-use on chairlifts, which club fields can also use. “That means when patrons come up, they can get a consistent experience, whether it’s masks, lifts, food and beverage. We’re all operating in a very similar way.” Coronet Peak is due to close on September 26, while The Remarks goes until October 17, weather permitting.
“That’s what’s really driven us to get both Coronet Peak and The Remarkables back open, as well as first tracks and night skiing, just get everything going again so those guys get the best opportunity to get good value for the pass.” Snow conditions at The Remarks have been good since reopening, with the weekend’s winter blast adding another 13cms to the slopes. But at the lower-altitude Coronet Peak the rain has drenched the snow and it has been closed several days, including Monday, with only a 10cm base. A few hundred people braved icy conditions for a night ski at Coronet on Alert Level 2 day, but the mountain closed all day Friday as rain drenched the snow. Outstanding is the only way to describe the Queenstown community’s reaction to New Zealand’s recent Delta outbreak. After an incredibly trying 18 months, our town was again asked to make huge sacrifices for the safety of not only our own region, but the whole of New Zealand. In typical Queenstown style, our residents rallied together to do what was needed. Essential workers across many sectors showed their dedication by keeping our region going in trying circumstances. Healthcare workers were among those leading the charge, administering vaccinations at sites across the Lakes District. Your combined efforts have led to the Southern District Health Board (SDHB) catchment being ranked the second best in the country for the percentage of the population to have had their first jab – and we are not far off being the best. That puts our region in good stead with many booked in to get their second injection. As vaccination rates keep increasing the bottom line is simple. The Government must formulate a practical international border reopening strategy that both protects our communities and ends 18 months of suffering for local businesses and the tourism and hospitality sector. Nations around the world are opening their borders and opening up opportunities for tourism and larger-scale events as a direct result of their approach to vaccination. New Zealand has been well behind them, ranked 121st in the world until very recently, but thankfully we are starting to catch up. The first thing we need is an internal border plan with Auckland still in Level 4. Domestic tourism is heavily dependent on visitors from Auckland and the Government needs to outline a plan that addresses the need to restart domestic tourism as we work towards Level 1. News that the Minister for COVID Response Chris Hipkins is signalling that the Government’s plans for an international border reopening, announced last month, are being reconsidered is concerning. The reality is that we need a game plan for how we will eventually reopen, acknowledging that there will inevitably be some surprises along the way that require the plan to be amended. Cafes, bars, restaurants and other businesses reliant on tourism simply cannot continue to sustain fixed costs without visitors, and need a see a strategy from Government that they can work towards. Perhaps they could take their lead from Greens co-leader James Shaw who is flying to Glasgow for climate change talks in November. Mr Shaw has clearly taken the view that business must continue as the pandemic goes on and that is a message his fellow Ministers must also acknowledge. I will certainly be continuing my campaign for the Government to answer the calls of our region to implement a practical pathway for revitalising our most crucial tourism industry, as well as addressing our long-running immigration and workforce concerns. The most pressing issue right now which the Government must address is the need to support our many small and medium sized, family owned and operated businesses. After 18 months of very challenging trading conditions these vital businesses were required to shut down again under Level 3 and 4 and are now operating under very limiting Level 2-D conditions. The Government must address the fact that small and medium sized businesses do not have the resources to keep paying for their fixed costs while shut down or operating well below capacity due to closed borders both internally and internationally. The reality is that tourist regions like ours are built on the hard work of small businesses and their teams who form a crucial part of our community. Thank you to everyone who is doing their very best during a challenging time. If history is any guide, difficult times like these will be followed by boom times. It is important that we take care of each other and ourselves in the meantime while we navigate the challenges in front of us.

A Queenstown Chamber lockdown survey of its members, released last week, shows a quarter are not confident they will survive, and another round of redundancies is on the horizon. “Last year, in lockdown, none of us knew what was coming. We were expecting the economy to tank, people were going to get sick and die, it was pretty bleak for everybody. “This year, a lot of people have done okay, in fact a lot have done quite well, but for those who are doing it hard, they are doing it even harder, because they’re tired, they don’t have any reserves. “It has really crystalized those who are affected and those who aren’t, but unfortunately the Government has continued with a one-size fits all approach. We’ve really gone beyond that now.”

Businesses can also continue to claim wage subsidy while Auckland remains in Alert Level 4 or 3.
A second round of resurgence payments will temporarily keep the wolves from the doors for many struggling Queenstown businesses.
Stokes says the Chamber is campaigning for the resurgence payments and wage subsidy to continue beyond that, for businesses that have experienced a significant loss of revenue, with perhaps a 75% threshold.
But much more needs to be done to help them survive long term, says Queenstown Chamber of Commerce boss Ruth Stokes.
That would protect the jobs of employees the businesses struggled to recruit before lockdown.
On Friday, Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson announced an extension of the Covid-19 Resurgence Support Payment (RSP), which helps businesses pay fixed costs during the revenue slump caused by the Delta outbreak and lockdown.
Other structural support would include tax losses being able to be taken as cash, a mortgage deferral scheme for small businesses, and last year’s small business loan support scheme being converted into a grant, rather than repaid.
The Queenstown Chamber had joined others from around the country in petitioning the Government to extend the RSP, collecting 50,000 signatures.
“And our big-ticket item would be a reduced GST rate for activities, events, accommodation and hospitality in the regions.
“It’s a fantastic outcome but it’s just a start, just a drop in the bucket,” Stokes says. “Our businesses, and those across New Zealand that are hugely affected, need targeted, longer-term, more certain support.”
“That’s about costs, but in terms of supporting revenue we’d be keen to see some form of travel voucher scheme.” Around 122 businesses responded to the survey, about a fifth of the Chamber’s membership. They included 35 businesses employing more than 20 people, 87 sole traders, and up to 19 staff.
Stokes says the latest lockdown has shown again how different sectors have been affected by the impact of Covid 19, with tourism, accommodation, hospitality and smaller retailers suffering the most.
It was canvassed before Robertson’s announcement of the resurgence payment extension.

The payment is $1,500 plus $400 per full-time equivalent (FTE) employee up to a maximum of 50 FTEs, or 4 times the actual revenue decline experienced by the applicant, whichever is less. Businesses need to show a 30% or more drop in revenue in a 7-day period from 8 September until immediately before all of New Zealand returns to Alert Level 1, compared to a typical 7-day period in the 6 weeks before 17 August. Applications will open for the second payment at 8am on Friday 17 September on Inland Revenue’s website, ird.govt.nz Businesses and organisations will be able to apply for the second payment even if they have received the first payment. Applications for both payments will remain open until 1 month after the whole of Aotearoa New Zealand returns to alert level 1.

Everything Else Wage subsidy The wage subsidy is $600 a week for each full-time employee retained (20 hours a week or more), and $359 a week for each parttime employee retained (less than 20 hours a week). Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern clarified the rules around support for businesses as most of the country moved down to Alert Level 2. “All businesses remain eligible to apply for the wage subsidy so long as any part of the country is in level three or four,” she said. “So, that means, for instance, a business in Queenstown, which is in level two, can still apply.” Businesses must meet eligibility criteria, including experiencing or forecasting a 40% decline in revenue due to the effects of the alert levels. “I want to assure businesses that the Covid economic supports stay in place as long as, for instance, Auckland is at those higher alert levels. “That, in part, is recognition of the fact that one part of the country can have a knock-on effect on other parts of the country.”

OPINION
There is no returning to normal

I keep hearing things are getting back to normal! But, if anything, this Covid lockdown has taught me that ‘normal’ is never coming back. It’s outdated and relegated to the rubbish bin. With the latest Delta outbreak, too, much has changed and believing things will go back to normal is a pipedream. This is not meant to sound negative, it’s just the way it is. How we work, how we live and how we travel has changed permanently. Even our language has changed. Eighteen months ago, an essential worker was someone that kept us safe, namely police, ambulance staff and the firies. Now it also includes under-appreciated supermarket and pharmacy workers, while the role of nurses has been elevated even higher. Through both lockdowns, technology stepped in to fill the void while we were forced to isolate in our bubbles, unable to go to work or school in person. School learning happened entirely remotely, technology was upgraded, while ‘office’ employees learnt the art of zooming and collaborating in chat groups, and our commute shrunk to a trip from the kitchen to the dining table. Many industry leaders who have struggled with the idea of remote work, have come around, basically because the structure of work has moved from the hierarchical office model to a democratic, more holistic approach, where the office is wherever employee is based. Employers have accepted that work isn’t measured on time, but on collaboration, output and results which doesn’t have to be in the office or between 9-5. They have seen that productivity hasn’t suffered in the past 18 months, in some cases it has improved, and the need for expensive office space and overheads has decreased.

While 100% remote working for everyone is a long way off, the lockdown has proved that it works and accelerated its acceptance. It won’t work for all companies and all staff, but certainly it’s increased the attractiveness of satellite offices and co-working spaces. I’m fascinated by the growth of shared spaces, which are springing up in Frankton, Cromwell and Wanaka. Fluid and MacOps are two that I’m aware of that have recently utilised this approach. Will that under-used downtown office space get repurposed by landlords as affordable apartment options? Maybe it could be a win-win. The education system will, I suspect, try to go back to business as usual because the majority of children learn better in a classroom with a teacherto-student ration of around 1-35. That is an undeniable fact. What they are missing, however, is that some learning would get far better outcomes if it was done online, being taught by the very, very best teachers to far larger groups of students. For example, math and science. These two fact-based courses are where outcomes might be improved if the best teacher in the region or even nationally taught across a 200- or even 500-1 student-teacher ratio online. This doesn’t have to be from home but we have the technology and, effectively, this could enable many other teachers more time to mentor or coach individual students and teach other subjects that require more classroom interaction with much lower student-to-teacher ratios than we can achieve currently. If the education department and school leaders were able to reflect on how learning might be enhanced by the access to technology and different teaching styles that were undertaken in lockdown, to rebuild a better overall approach, imagine how this might improve our outcomes. Not only has Covid been the biggest challenge to NZer’s health, it’s also going to become the biggest agent of change we are likely to see to the way we live, work, earn and learn in living memory.

Dear Diary, Today I found myself with all this time on my hands and it's leading to my veggie garden getting a makeover/major tidy up. If I see another rabbit, I’m going to catch it and turn it into sushi. The rabbit fence is finished with actual real gates!!! So hopefully no more f#@$#%g Peter Rabbit and his mates eating my crops. I’ve gone for a 20mm mesh which is closer to chicken netting than rabbit netting. No more Peter Rabbit magic shows for me with Peter jumping through the mesh.

Dear Diary, I’ve completely dug out my central tomato growing bed in the tunnel house. Removing all the soil and replacing it with a new mix. I’ve been growing tomatoes in this soil for over 20 years and it was time. I've had a few persistent tomato diseases in the bed that have led to two dismal tomato growing years - even with weather considerations they’ve been terrible. My bed is 20cm high, 80cm wide and 8m long. My back hurts. Traditionally, a lot of gardeners replace their tunnel/glass house soil every year. I reckon that sounds like a lot of hard work. With good compost and mineral applications, you should have healthy soil for years. Except you can bring in diseases unknowingly. After twenty years it was time for a fresh batch for me. This huge amount of space was replaced in layers: 1. Deeply forked the subsoil. 2. A layer of biochar, 1cm thick. 3. A layer of wood chips, 5cm thick 4. A layer of manure, 3-5cm thick 5. A layer of mushroom compost, 10cm thick 6. A layer of home compost, 5cm thick 7. A thick biscuit of lucerne straw, 5-10cm thick. 8. A sprinkle of rock minerals and a lime/dolomite mix. Another option would be 45% topsoil and 50% mushroom compost, 5% biochar and some minerals. I was just using what I had available.

Dear Diary, All my raised beds need the top 5-10cm of soil removed. (what's with all this shoveling!) Years of composting and mulching has led to my raised bed (25cm tall, so not that big) overflowing. Therefore, it’s time to reduce and remove. Again, my trusty wheelbarrow has had some action. This was followed by applying some fresh compost and, where needed, some lucerne mulch. For beds that are going to receive a direct sow of seeds (carrots for example) I’ve kept some beds free of mulch. The mulch has many benefits but warming the soil in spring is not one of them. And I want warm soil to germinate my seeds.

Dear Diary, Oooh I like a tidy pathway. Today I’ve been slowly cleaning up my pathways of any weeds and adding a wood chip top up. Tidy paths, tidy garden and no rogue weeds getting in from the sides into my veggie beds.

Dear Diary, Feeling better today with the sun shining, and I’ve gotten heaps done. I’ve bought myself a wine barrel to start using a non-plastic alternative for my green fertilizer teas. The first one is an experiment with winter nettles and some minced fish carcasses I scored. Lid on is just fine, lid off is scary!! In the berry cage I’ve added manure and wood chips under the boysenberries, logan and raspberries. The blueberries also got this treatment as an experiment. I’ve popped a row of strawberries in and will try and sneak another in if I get the time. Some weedy plants are definitely just in the wrong place. So I have plenty of comfrey that is getting dug up and moved around fruit trees. I also have lemon balm that’s getting transferred underneath fruit trees. You can’t beat living mulches.

Dear Diary, I got into the tunnel house and planted some seedlings and sowed a mix of leafy greens seeds: mizuna, spinach, rocket, radishes, peas. Within a week some have already germinated, not bad for the start of spring.

• Sowing seeds into pots. • Some direct seed sowing into the soil, yes, it's early but it’s a warm beginning to spring so far. • I’m trying some carrots, peas, and radishes outside. • Make a hot compost heap with wood chips and manure. • Make a second compost pile with just cabbage tree leaves and manure. QUEENS GAMBIT This show has been out for a while now but if you haven’t seen it then do yourself a favour and give it a go. The plot is about a young woman, Beth Harmon who discovers the game of chess in an orphanage basement which leads to her becoming a star of the chess world, The show is based on a book of the same name by novelist Walter Tevis, whose other works include The Hustler, The Man Who Fell to Earth and The Color of Money. The Queens Gambit is a seven-part drama, about Beth Harmon who is also a troubled soul becoming addicted to the pills handed out at the orphanage– legally, apparently, in the 1950s when her story begins – Beth, moves quickly to become grand master at a time when women didn’t compete and against the Russians which at the period was a diplomatic power struggle with the west. It a well written, acted, produced and a riveting jaunt.

Six months after the death of his father, 17-year old Norman Bates and his mother, Norma, move from Arizona to the town of White Pine Bay, Oregon, where they purchase a motel with the insurance money from his father’s death.
Pat Jnr’s driven to get his wife, back and in his quest to maintain a healthy lifestyle, which includes running around the neighbourhood wearing a plastic rubbish bag, he meets Tiffany Maxwell. Tiffany is a girl with problems of her own. They embark on a love/hate friendship to help the other achieve their individual goals. Tiffany, convinces Pat she can pass a letter to Nikki. In return, she gets Pat to become her partner in a dance contest. This proves to be a shared goal which naturally turns bad before it all comes together on the night in front of friends and family.
Together, they dispose of the body in a lake. His disappearance soon attracts the attention of the town sheriff Alex Romero and his deputy and Norma and Norman must stop them from finding out the truth.
The show is well worth the 2 hours of escapism.
A few nights later, the former owner breaks in and sexually assaults Norma, before Norman knocks him out and Norma kills him.
Meanwhile, Norman enrols at the local high school, befriending a classmate, Emma Decody, and attracting the attention of teacher Blaire Watson. Elsewhere, Norma’s other son, Dylan Massett (Norman’s half-brother) arrives in town.

COMMUNITY NOTES The Wakatipu Reforestation Trust by Karen O’Donahoo
The Wakatipu Reforestation Trust’s Spring Planting Season is underway with an ambitious plan to plant 5000 native trees and shrubs. Over the next 4 weeks, the Trust is planting natives at their Keystone sites and they would love your support at one or all of this years planting sites. These reforestation sites are located on public land with easy community access. Planting days are drop-in style, and everyone is welcome. Bring your family, friends, whanau and plenty of enthusiasm.
Lake Hayes South Saturday September 25th - 9am – 11am Lake Hayes South (Park at Lake Hayes Pavilion and walk left along the track.) Habitat: Swamp Wetland Thousand years ago Lake Hayes would have been filled with a rich diversity of native trees suited to growing in a swampy environment. The rise and fall of the lake would have provided ideal conditions for wetland plants, ranging in size from small sedges to New Zealand’s native conifers, the towering kahikatea and majestic matai. These trees would have provided a haven for forest birds like kererū/wood pigeon, and the wetlands a source of food and habitat for now rare ground-dwelling species such as rails and fernbirds.
The Trust manages five keystone planting sites that have been strategically chosen to cover different ecosystems and close to local communities. The sites for the planting this year have the capacity to be planted for the next 10 years at current operational levels, massively increasing the levels of native habitat and biodiversity in each area.
The extensive loss of wetlands throughout the country has resulted in a degradation of our waterways and loss of habitat for many native species. The vision is to re-establish an ecosystem that is now rare, with a resulting increase in native species. Trees, such as kahikatea, will grow alongside a mix of other wetland species. As these grow to establish a new forest, the invasive willows will be gradually removed, allowing native wildlife to thrive into the future.

Prior to humans, the Lake Hayes catchment would have been cloaked in a variety of small trees and shrubs well adapted to the site. The colder frosty conditions of the valley floor would have prevented native beech forest from establishing. Right along the stream edge, the riparian zone would have contained a mixture of grasses, sedges, and reeds, providing a source of habitat and food for a mix of waterfowl and insectivorous birds, like the pīwakawaka/fantail. Many of the native species have been lost to farming and invasive weeds. The resulting shift in natural processes has also led to a decline in water quality at Lake Hayes and the loss of native wildlife. The vision is to replant the stream edge with a diversity of natives to improve water quality and provide a source of food and shelter for native waterfowl. Beyond the edges of the riparian zone, grey shrubland species will be planted to help restore a part of the basin to how it once was.

Snow social: The first day of the ‘Level 2 season’ at Coronet Peak Megan’s extra cool birthday “It’s my birthday so it is extra special to be up here. The snow is okay but we’re happy to take what we’re given. Just look at it: it’s beautiful today!” – Megan and Dave.
Spring conditions, smiling faces and slightly sore legs were the order of the morning as Coronet Peak welcomed guests back on Wednesday 8th September. The move to alert level two means ski areas are back open. Coronet Peak was first to open with First Tracks from 8am and the last to close with Night Skiing until 9pm. Entry to the mountain is a little different. There’s a QR code scanning ‘gateway’ which enables guests to scan (or sign) in from their cars before reaching the base building car parks. Level 2 rules mean that skiers and snowboarders are required to wear face masks indoors, while in queues and on the chairlift. A buff or other face covering typically worn while skiing works well.
A few fresh turns before work “After spending many weeks in lockdown, just being outside in the snow is unbelievable. My legs are a bit sore, it feels like the start of the season again, but I’m getting straight back into it with a few runs before work. It’s a little bit windy but it’s an awesome day apart from that and I’m so glad to be back.” – Ben

Coronet Peak Ski Area Manager, Nigel Kerr, said opening the mountain at Level 2 left him feeling “happiness and relief in equal measure.” “It is great to be here and to have something for people to be excited about – and they certainly are excited to be here. “[…] It’s the milestone of getting out on the skis again that is important thing. I think, for the whole district, there’s no point in living here if you don’t ski in the winter.” NZSki boss Paul Anderson said he was also feeling “relieved and thrilled. It’s so good to see people up here on the mountain again.”
Perks of a pretty much private ski field “The snow is good and there’s no one from Auckland here. It’s pretty much typical spring skiing. We’ve got the icy bits and we’ve got the soft bits and as the day wears on it’ll turn into mashed potato. Sorry, Auckland, but this is great. We wish Auckland could be here… we do miss you guys, but we’ll just have to wait to see you next year!” – Natalie and KJ
“I’m a little bit anxious to be honest,” Paul said as he headed up for First Tracks, “It’s like the first day of the season again. But I’ll get going again and see how the legs go. I’ve been doing plenty of walking during lockdown but no skiing obviously!” Conditions were typical of spring, with stunning blue skies, a little bit of wind and a fresh dusting of snow with some icy patches. “We had amazing snow going into lockdown and the whole community was gazing at these mountains, just watching the snow pack down and then recede. But we’ve had another blast and you do often get these spring storms coming through. If anything, I’m always a bit surprised people don’t ski more in spring because it is so good,” said Paul. Coronet Peak’s first morning open was quiet, but those who jumped on the chairlift enjoyed the spacious slopes and fresh air after a tough few weeks in lockdown.

Dear Mr Brightside, I’m going to grow my own produce. I’m giving self-sufficiency a go. Quick question though, when’s the last frost? Outside planting seems to hinge on this but none of the packets state a date?
That God forsaken green thumb rule is wide open for interpretation. But when is the last frost? They say. How can you confidently predict these things? You ask? You can’t. MetService is merely an assumption. Welcome to the woes of a pastoral farmer. There’s a reason why they always grumble about the weather. Mother nature can make or break their yearly income. Now, as a self-proclaimed self-sufficient grower, you too can join in with their frustration on a mediocre backyard level. It’s become gospel in NZ that after labour weekend is a “safe” time to plant outside. That’s why Mitre 10 and Bunnings are flashing, gnashing their spring deals enticing twiddling green fingers to get plants rooted in the great outdoors. But it’s still premature because alas... weather... she’s is so fickle in spring. There is much mystery around this ‘last frost’. Was it last week? Or 2 weeks after Labour weekend? When do I plant? Here’s my grubby glove advice. There needs to be enough sunlight hours so the ground starts to warm up. Warm soil and fresh dewy mornings are optimal conditions for germination. This is why everything grows in spring. Good news. You can achieve the initial beginnings of a plant’s life inside where you have more control over your environment. But fair warning, it requires a bit of round-the-clock nursing. Placing sowed seed punnets in a clear plastic container in a sunny spot of the house can act as a budget greenhouse. Regular misting will achieve the same effect as a cool spring morning. Don’t forget about ventilation either. Airflow is needed every once and awhile to help with the growth process. When seedlings start developing their true leaves there’s a technique called ‘hardening off’. It’s when you place teenage seedlings outside for the day to get them accustomed to their harsh natural reality. This is a good thing to do if you’re coddling them indoors. If you feel ballsy, plant outside but give those non-hardy seedlings some cover for September. Frost cloth or cut plastic bottles can act as a protector for weather, birds and bugs. October. October is your month to sow or plant outside but… then again... There still might be freak frosts. There is no certainty. Try or buy. Good LUCK.

‘Out of something tragic came something beautiful’: Twenty years ago, on Sep. 11, 2001, when the spotlight was at its harshest, Newfoundland, Canada shone its brightest when Gander and surrounding towns took in 7,000 passengers from airplanes rerouted and downed at the nearest airport as the Twin Towers burned in New York. Seven thousand people were suddenly thrust upon a town whose population was only 9,300. And yet those “plane people” were sheltered, fed, clothed, entertained and comforted by a community whose members immediately put their lives on hold to help others in distress. The stories of those five days in September have entered Canadian lore. They’ve been immortalized in documentaries and Broadway musicals — “Come From Away” posters are ubiquitous in Gander. In those five days, Gander showed the world — at a time perhaps when it needed it the most — there were corners of the planet where kindness and compassion are baked into people’s character, where the question of whether to help another in need is not a question at all, merely a concept at which to cock an amused eyebrow before saying, inevitably, “Course b’y.”

Climate explained: is New Zealand losing or gaining native forests? Apart from wetlands, land above the treeline, coastal dunes and a few other exceptions, New Zealand was once covered in forests from Cape Reinga to Bluff. So was Europe, which basically consisted of a single forest from Sicily in southern Italy to the North Cape in Norway, before human intervention. But since people arrived in New Zealand some 850 years ago, about three quarters of the country’s native forest area has been lost. About half of the loss happened before Europeans arrived, mostly through burning to clear large areas of native bush.
So what has the One Billion Trees Programme achieved in comparison to these changes? The project’s aim is to double the current planting rate and plant one billion trees between 2018 and 2028. The latest report shows about a quarter of this goal has been achieved in terms of the number of trees planted. In regards to forest area, 25,557 hectares have been reforested, about half of it with natives. This is a remarkable achievement in light of the losses cited above and the short duration of the programme.
Saving remaining peat bogs In recent decades, the loss of native forest has slowed down. For example, in the first decade of the 21st century, we lost roughly 16,000 hectares of native forest, which translates to a loss of about 0.2% of the remaining total area covered in native forest (about 7.5 million hectares). The error associated with such estimates is considerable, though, because land cover is complex and highly fragmented.
A billion trees According to Global Forest Watch, the drivers behind the more recent losses of native forests include exotic plantation forests, urban developments and wildfires. Indeed, the total land area dedicated to exotic plantation forests increased by about 200,000 hectares per decade between 1990 and 2017.
We think of forests as our guardians of carbon — and indeed, an aged New Zealand forest can hold about 350 tonnes of carbon per hectare. But intact peat bogs, such as the Kopuatai dome in the Waikato region, can hold up to 1,400 tonnes of carbon per hectare. But peat bogs only store carbon if they remain wet. Once drained, they begin to emit carbon dioxide. Almost half of New Zealand’s peatlands are in the Waikato, but of a total of 89,000 hectares only 19,400 hectares remain in a natural state. The Kopuatai bog itself is surrounded by dairy farms operating on drained peat. Collectively, the Waikato’s drained peatlands produce 10-33 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions per hectare each year. The draining of peatlands in the Waikato region did far more damage, in terms of carbon emissions, than a small loss of forest area. But nevertheless, planting trees and increasing our forest area is an important and necessary contribution to climate mitigation, and often comes with a myriad of other benefits, far beyond carbon sequestration. Sometimes it’s as easy as planting your own fruit trees around your house. They will capture carbon for years to come, and keep you from buying fruit that has been transported thousands of kilometres. They might even motivate you to reduce food waste. Globally, about 25-30% of food goes to waste. If we reduced food waste, we could save agricultural land multiple times the size of New Zealand and plant trees there instead.

But as ever, the creative community has been… well, creative! Though things are a little different this Spring, there’s still plenty of arts and cultural events. Here are four workshops and events you can attend or be part of this spring.
2021 Art Awards Artists are invited to take part in the Queenstown Arts Centre’s annual Art Awards. There’s a Supreme Award and a range of award categories for different mediums and styles including traditional, contemporary, mixed media, photography, pottery and jewellery. The annual art award will be held on Friday 12th November, so now’s the time to get your thinking caps on and get creative. Entries are open now and cost $15 for members and $20 for non-members. Advanced acrylic techniques workshop Evan Woodruffe is an international visual artist and a man with a serious penchant for bold colour and complex patterns. You’ll also learn how to counterpoint tone, chroma and hue to maximum effect. All materials will be provided. She started out studying with well-known handmade clay artist Anthony Morris (of Morris and James, Matakana) and continued her studies at Elam School of Fine Arts. Southern Soul present an evening of traditional and contemporary choral music with Lizzie Green on Piano and Katie Bridges on Harp. Originally formed in 2019, Southern Soul are a Queenstown based choir comprised of local musicians and vocalists. Their prior performances have been appearances for local events and fundraisers and this is their first concert where they can showcase their diverse material and the talents. There will be something for everyone, songs from artists such as Queen, Lorde, John Legend as well as some musical theatre and traditional choral pieces. The choir will be joined by special guests; the Japanese Community Choir and The Wakatipu Women’s Choir.
