Te Putahi Ladies Mile – take the reins Change is the one constant in life and Ladies Mile has seen plenty of it since the early days of being lauded a safe stretch of road for women to ‘take the reins’. Right now, we all have the opportunity to take the reins and guide how this area can grow and change for the benefit of the existing community and future generations. It’s well known that the wider Te Pūtahi Ladies Mile is special to locals. Over the years it’s become an increasingly popular place to live. I have a personal attachment to it myself. That’s why I’m encouraging all of you to take a look at the draft Masterplan and planning rules and have a say. Ladies Mile has been under increasing development pressure since 1998 when Lake Hayes Estate was rezoned into a low density area for housing. Since then, a number of other key planning decisions means the area is now home to around 1,600 sections. That’s larger than Arrowtown. The pressure to build more housing in this area is mounting and is difficult to stop for a number of reasons. The area is flat, hazard free, sunny, serviceable and a convenient location to nearby Frankton. Combined with the recent National Policy Statement on Urban Development 2020, which seeks to enable greater housing supply and more responsive planning, Council’s ability to restrict future development comes under pressure. That’s why the Council initiated the master planning process. So that together, Council and the community could give developers a really clear direction and set planning rules around how the area could change in the future. The proposals we’ve released for comment come after some eight months of conversations with stakeholders and the community. It provides an impression of what the area could look like in the future including a mix of development densities and opportunity for improved bus services, local facilities like a town centre, primary and high school and a community/sports centre. The aim is to provide more localised services meaning people don’t need to travel over the bridge as much. That said, it would be naive to think that further development won’t bring more traffic movements and as I’ve said before, I’ll need to be satisfied that there is a workable, robust plan in place that ensures the traffic snarl up’s we already see are not added to before any development takes place in the future. Anyone can bring their broken treasures along, to receive free advice and repairs. If people know that specific parts are required for their repair they should also bring these along. Crucial to the success of the 2020 events were the sixty volunteers who shared their time and skills. “We were so appreciative of the generosity and enthusiasm of the volunteers,” Wastebusters event organiser Abbey Lewis said. “Their collective experience was invaluable. We’re once again looking for volunteer fixers of all kinds to share their talents at this year’s events” “Whether you’re a pro, or just a handy person, we’d love you to come along and share your repair skills with the community,” Abbey said. “We need volunteers to fix household items such as computers, electronics, small appliances, small furniture, clothes, jewellery, books, bikes and more.” Volunteer repairers can sign up and get more information at www. wastebusters.co.nz The whole idea of the Repair Revolution is to: •

What’s On Free Park and Ride to Luma. It’s less than a month to go until LUMA Southern Light Project and for the first time, the LUMA team is introducing Park & Ride at Queenstown Central Shopping Centre, in collaboration with Orbus and AJ Hackett to help to alleviate the inevitable traffic congestion and parking headache. LUMA Park & Ride will be free for anyone attending the event - and even more incentive to ride is the express entry on arrival to the Gardens. No waiting in line. LUMA Chairman, Duncan Forsyth, says that feedback from previous years has addressed the transport options available to visitors. Whilst Queenstown Gardens is the ideal location for LUMA, SH6 is a notorious bottleneck and the little bay simply can’t sustain the demand. “Addressing the traffic and parking options has been a key priority for our team leading into the event this year. We have been blown away by the support from Queenstown Central to accommodate a space for visitors to park up; fill up on meal deals within the precinct and then jump on the buses ready for LUMA. “As for the buses, AJ Hackett Bungy and Orbus (managed by the Otago Regional Council), are generously supporting this initiative. Shuttles will operate from 5pm – 10pm every evening to and from the Gardens.” The LUMA Pass is the second new addition to LUMA operations this year. The initial ticket purchased online needs to be swapped at one of the
Collection Points for a wristband. That wristband will then grant access to the Gardens throughout the weekend; as well as discount deals with LUMA partners, free Park & Ride, and spot prizes. Wristband Collection Points will be set up at Park & Ride, Glenda Drive and in Queenstown Central at Kmart. Visitors can also collect their wristbands at the Park & Ride or the Gardens, but the operations team is advising ‘the sooner, the better’ to avoid the queues. The 2021 NZ Mountain Film and Book Festival passes are now on sale. $750 per week
Now in its 19th year, the festival runs in Wanaka from June 25 to 29, and in Queenstown from July 1 to 3. Passes cost $49 for Queenstown events or $115 for Wanaka. General tickets go on sale in June. Organisers have received extra funding to encourage people to attend in person, through the Southern Lakes Regional Events Funding. Mark Sedon, founder and festival director, says: “We are in a strong position thanks to fervent support from our patrons and successful funding applications. “Our focus has always been on delivering a quality event to our audience, some of whom have attended the event since the beginning.” The key note speakers for this year’s event include Tara Mulvany and Mark Watson. Tara is well-known for becoming the first woman to circumnavigate New Zealand’s three main islands by sea kayak. Mark Watson is a New Zealand-based photographer and author specialising in landscape, adventure and travel photography who spent almost four years bike-packing the length of the Americas; a 45,500km journey from Alaska to central Patagonia. ‘Don’t vote for me’ says QLDC candidate by Paul Taylor
Queenstown council by-election candidate Emily Rutherford has been told her name will remain on the ballot paper, despite publicly withdrawing from the race last week. The morning after outlining her campaign to Queenstown Grey Power members, Rutherford realised her business interests meant she wouldn’t have time to commit to being a councillor. But Electoral Officer Jane Robertson says a nomination can’t be cancelled unless the candidate becomes ‘incapacitated’. The voting papers for the June by-election will, therefore, still feature three candidates. Sustainability and education advocate Esther Whitehead and retired lawyer Phil Wilson are the other two candidates. 50 calls to police over disappearance of Amber-Lee Cruickshank by RNZ
Police have received more than 50 calls since a $100,000 reward was offered a fortnight ago. Two-year-old Amber-Lee Cruickshank went missing from a Cornwall Street property in Kingston, on the shores of Lake Whakatipu, on 17 October 1992. The toddler and her family planned to stay at the property, where a number of people were socialising at the time of Amber-Lee’s disappearance. Police believed the girl might have been a victim of foul play. Detective Inspector Stu Harvey said officers were looking into the tip-offs. Police will pay up to $100,000 for information which led to the identity and conviction of anyone responsible for Amber-Lee’s disappearance. “The offer of a reward will remain in place until 13 October 2021.”

Arts+Culture Grand adventures in store for stowaway mouse By Bethany Rogers
Well-known Queenstown musician Gemma Healy is about to launch her first book for children.
It was while playing music at a bar that Gemma met illustrator and graphic artist Amanda Hughes.
‘Bongo the Stowaway Mouse’ has been in the works for five years and was inspired by Gemma’s own travels. Aimed at two- to five-year-olds it features a mouse (called Bongo) who travels New Zealand, meeting native animals and learning about the local culture along the way.
“In the staff room there was an amazing caricature of the staff – I asked who had done it and I met Amanda, later finding out that she had a background in children’s book illustration and as a graphic artist, so I got her on board.”
“I’ve always done bits of writing and I’ve done stuff with kids before. Bongo the Stowaway Mouse was an idea that came from all the travel John and I had done and I had the idea of a little mouse that could easily stow away and travel the world. It started with the theme tune about five years ago and then I began writing the book.”
Bongo the mouse re-ignited Amanda’s passion for illustration and she’s since gone on to work on the Netflix TV show DC Super Hero Girls. But having a child of her own meant that Gemma held off completing the book until John encouraged her to work on it during lockdown last year.
Originally from Wales, Gemma met her future husband and fellow musician John Healy in Spain. In 2009, the pair moved to Queenstown and formed Calico Entertainment, quickly establishing a solid reputation for live music performances in the Southern Lakes region.
It’s been ‘tested’ at a local play centre and at QLDC’s recent Teddy Bears Picnic events in Wanaka and Arrowtown. “It was exciting and a wee bit scary sharing it… it’s a bit like showing someone your diary! It’s become a part of me. Kids are pretty honest so it was great to get good feedback. The kids ask questions about the native creatures and because we send Bongo packing at the end […] it’s a nicer way of explaining that he’s not meant to be here without going into the details of trapping with two- to five-year-olds.” Gemma has more adventures in store for Bongo, with further opportunities to learn about culture, geography and native creatures. She jokes that the imminent travel bubble might mean Bongo’s next adventure is in Australia. The book is being self-published and it can be pre-ordered online (bongoadventures.com) – the theme tune is free to listen to on the website too. The official book launch will be held at the Kiwi Birdlife Park this May.

Comedy - Ben Elton Live Ben Elton has been a leader in the comedy scene for more than 30 years, hosting Channel 4’s groundbreaking Saturday Live. Elton has achieved huge success as a stand-up comic, author, playwright, actor and director. He’s written television shows such as The Young Ones, Blackadder, The Thin Blue Line, Mr Bean and many more, as well writing and directing two feature films: 2000’s Maybe Baby and 2017’s Australian-made Three Summers. Also a highly respected author, Elton has published 16 best-selling novels, six of which became number one bestsellers. Elton is also widely known for his writing for the stage which includes three smash hits and the global phenomenon We Will Rock You based on the music of British rock legends Queen.

This is the story of New Zealand singer / songwriter and actor Stan Walker, who has become one of the finest emerging artists from Australia and New Zealand since winning Australian Idol in 2009. He has played parts in a few New Zealand movies and stared with Sam Neill in the hit “Hunt for the Wilder People”. In his book he talks about poverty, and his terrible childhood surrounded by violence and sexual abuse. It is a very frank retelling of his life and especially his very public battle with stomach cancer, the disease which nearly killed him and from which he is now in remission. Walker covers family and the power of love and forgiveness. He tells us about his journey from nothing to fame, a real rag to riches story. It is an honest, deep and very inspirational memoir. It is also a great book to learn and appreciate Maori culture and heritage.

TECHNOLOGY 6 TECH TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS TO FIX YOUR GADGETS How you fix a problem ultimately depends on what that problem is. That said, many of the most common technology problems have simple and easy solutions. Here are six of the most common troubleshooting tricks you need to know.
Check for the Latest Software Updates A persistent problem isn’t always down to failing hardware. Sometimes faulty software can cause a problem that will keep resurfacing until it is patched out. In this case you have to wait to clear up these issues until there is a software update. It’s generally a good idea to update your gadgets as soon as a software update becomes available (with the exception of major operating system upgrades that may cause more problems than they solve). For the most part, smaller ongoing updates should be downloaded as soon as possible.
Gadget Won’t Turn on? Charge It for a While Some devices are put away and left for months, maybe even years. All too often, when you retrieve an old device, it’s dead as a doornail. Even when you connect a charging cable, nothing seems to happen. When batteries are completely run flat, they often need to be charged slowly to avoid damaging the cells. In short, you should leave a “dead” device connected to power for a while before giving up on it completely. Just how long this takes depends on the device, but a few hours should usually do the trick.
Turn It off and on back on again. It might be really basic, but “turning it off and on again” is the solution to many of life’s tech problems. Since a lot of issues are caused by software, turning your computer, smartphone, or other gadgets off and then booting them up again eliminates the problem by “starting over.” Operating systems have lots of processes happening all at the same time. When one or more of these processes encounters a problem, it can cause a chain reaction which ultimately leads to the device not operating as you’d expect. Sometimes its easy to identify and restart the particular process that’s causing the problem, but it’s often just easier to restart the device and wipe the slate clean.
Connections and Cable Woes? Cables are still a big point of failure. The most obvious example is USB cables used to charge your smartphone. These charging cables get so much usage and are constantly being yanked and bent, so it’s no wonder that they fail frequently and need replacing. Replacing a cable can solve your issue or help you diagnose it further. If the problem doesn’t go away with a new cable, there might be a problem with your device it’s plugged into (like the wall socket or computer’s USB port), or the port on the device itself may be faulty. This can aid in diagnosing and ultimately fixing the problem.
Wet Gadget? If your device gets wet, the first thing you should do is turn it off and remove the battery, if possible. This reduces the risk of a short circuit, which might damage components irreparably. The DIY repair aficionados often recommend using isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush.
Software Problem? Try Reinstalling the App If your issue is software-related and you’ve already tried restarting with no success, reinstalling the software in question might be a good idea. If it’s a mobile or desktop application, this is a pretty straight-forward.
If you can’t or don’t want to open your device, the best thing to do is make sure that it’s switched off and that any removable batteries are removed, and then wait! Make sure that you wait long enough for the device to dry out— as a rule of thumb, 48 hours should do—before you try powering it on again. BTW, hold the rice as it turns out that rice doesn’t really help to dry out your gadgets and will often cause more problems by getting into small cracks behind buttons and keys.

Rate payers faced with multi-million dollar bill for asbestos clean-up by Paul Taylor
Queenstown ratepayers will have to stump up $8.6 million to remove historic asbestos from the Lakeview site. The 10 hectare former campground is being redeveloped as an extension to the town centre with residential buildings, hotels, coworking and co-living spaces, hospitality and retail.
They began by stripping down the cabins, used by generations of holiday makers and more recently as accommodation for lowincome workers, and then removing old motel buildings used by QLDC as storage. To date, 89% of waste generated from the site has been diverted from landfill. Some 3,903 tonnes have been recycled and 554 tonnes reused.
But before the developers can begin work, Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is tasked with clearing the site of about 100 cabins and buildings, before installing infrastructure such as roads and sewers. And it’s just had to double its site clearance budget to $12 million. At QLDC’s meeting on Thursday, in a session the public and media were not allowed to attend, councillors approved an additional $6.3m for clearing up historic asbestos containing materials (ACM). The original budget set aside for asbestos clearance was $2.3m. QLDC Property Director Richard Pope said that the amount of asbestos containing materials discovered in the buildings and soil was significantly higher than had been originally expected. The materials discovered appear to be from historic activity prior to 1970.

But its the soil itself that is causing the problem. QLDC has removed 221 truckloads of asbestos contaminated soil from the site so far. The process for identifying and managing ACM included employing contractors experienced in handling ACM, undertaking regular test pits and air monitoring, contained transport, and disposal at a dedicated safe site in Southland. “Stopping work was not an option,” said Pope. “Not only would it have voided our agreements with developer partners but this would be in contradiction to the objectives that Council resolved to pursue in selling the site for development in the first place. “It would have made the site unusable, and deferred the clean-up burden to a point when it could likely be even more costly.” The overall cost of site clearance and infrastructure now tops $21 million.
“The plan had always assumed a certain amount of ACM due to the age of the site and the buildings. It’s very common for building materials such as pipes or roofing from before 2000 to contain asbestos. “Pre-demolition surveys outlined the ACM to be expected in the buildings, but as clearance progresses we are discovering significant unexpected material in the soils underneath and around the buildings. “There appears to be historic treatment of building materials where cabins and other campground buildings have previously been knocked down or altered, which has resulted in levels of ACM far beyond what was planned for.” Having now uncovered the ACM, QLDC is committed to dealing with it responsibly and safely, Pope said, and leaving a site and public space that is safe for future use. “Ultimately the Lakeview site will have people living and working here, there will be public spaces, businesses and homes. “Although it is additional budget, we know it’s the right thing to do for the environment and future generations to treat this contamination properly now.” Ryal Bush workers began work on Lakeview back in July 2020, tasked with demolishing 83 buildings and removing 14 cabins for transport to pastures new.

In October 2019, QLDC signed a development agreement with Melbourne-based developer Ninety Four Feet and Aucklandbased investment company Augusta Capital. They’ll develop the site in seven phases, with three hectares set aside for buildings and the rest become public spaces, reserves and roads.

A new feature was introduced to iPhones and iPads last week which is causing a huge rift between Apple and Facebook. It will allow Apple users to say no to having their data collected by apps. Facebook has been put in a spin by this because user data - and the advertising it can generate - is what makes the company so profitable. This update could deal a severe blow to its business model. The row focuses on a unique device identifier on every iPhone and iPad, called the IDFA (identifier for advertisers). Facebook, use this IDFA to both target ads and estimate their effectiveness. The IDFA can also be paired with other tech, such as Facebook’s tracking pixels or tracking cookies, which follow users around the web, to learn even more about you. But when iOS 14.5 came out last week, the new App Tracking Transparency feature will be on by default. It will force app developers to explicitly ask for permission from users to use this IDFA. Whilst social media has many positive attributes, it can be a very toxic environment at times. Kiwis are increasingly looking to quit social media according to new research. Reboot Online classified and grouped consistently recurring Google searches by individuals on quitting social media and discovered that New Zealand ranks 16th, with an average of 11,900 online searches a month from Kiwis signalling their desire to leave social media. More reasons for optimism on climate change than we’ve seen for decades: It’s unusual for researchers who study our catastrophically changing climate to use the words “optimism” and “climate change” in the same sentence. At US President Biden’s climate summit last week, the US committed to a 50-52% cut in greenhouse gas emissions reduction by 2030. The UK promised a 78% emissions reduction by 2035, while the EU pledged to cut emissions 55% by 2030. And Japan committed to a 46% cut by 2030 on 2013 emissions. Recently, more reasons for optimism have emerged than has been seen for decades. The IPCC’s AR6 reports — the latest assessment of the science and social responses to climate change — will be released in time for the next major climate summit, in November. Policy makers will have stronger directive than ever on the urgency to act. It’s also now also unequivocal that people want action. The largest ever global opinion survey on climate change, found that 64% of people consider the climate crisis a “global emergency”. Policy makers at last seem to be taking both science and public will for action seriously. Some 120 countries have committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. - The Conversation

Driving up the lake on a nearly winter afternoon is just spectacular. I love any excuse to go to Glenorchy, and an invitation to a concert by Holly Arrowsmith and dinner at Camp Glenorchy with loads of old locals and lots of newbies all there to raise funds for the new Glenorchy Trails Trust was a perfect reason. One day, there’s going to be a trail all the way from Glenorchy to Queenstown, but Friday night’s bash means they’ve gathered enough dosh to do the first part. Long time locals have always been great at giving a hand for community events, but it’s been Americans who’ve taught us so much about philanthropy and giving money (I know that’s a very uncomfortable notion for many wealthy people!!) to our community. Debbie and Paul Brainerd have made a massive contribution to Glenorchy and we’ve all learnt from them - not just about generosity, but about living off the grid. If you haven’t visited Camp Glenorchy, DO! - everything from the loos and heating to the building itself is not just friendly to the environment but absolutely in love with it. TIME mag did a story about them and it’s been praised for not just doing the tiny token green things, but doing it completely.They do tours of the whole setup if you’re interested, and it’s fascinating. We are so lucky having people like this moving to the Wakatipu and bringing new ideas. Did we even know what ecofriendly meant? Or salsa dancing? Or a cycle trail? I’ve been learning about mondegreens this week - they are words that are misheard (mostly in songs) and the expression comes from an old Scottish song “The Bonny Earl o’Moray” which had the line “and laid him on the green” but was often repeated as” Lady Mondegreen”. See if you can work out what songs the misheard lines “The girl with colitis goes by” or “I’ll never leave your pizza burning” are really from. The Lakes District Museum’s big autumn art fair is still on - there are some terrific works by local artists for sale and it’s nice buying something you like that will not just please you, but the artist too, AND make money for the museum. My favourite is still Lee van der Geest’s beautiful pig - Akarua Winery donated the wooden barrels and invited artists to decorate them. Lee’s delicious swine barrel had bids of over $3000 last time I looked on the Trade Me site, and some of the other barrels have even more - what a great idea, Akarua!!!
