Wait, what, how much? How many of you have read the Queenstown Lakes District Council Ten Year Plan 2021-31? Sounds super boring, doesn’t it. So boring, I’d imagine some people have already glazed over and stopped reading this editorial. Council language the world over is an impenetrable mess of jargon and legalese, like a test to see whether you’re invested enough in the future of your community to read to the end of another dry paragraph. It’s 2021 and everyone has the attention span of a scrolling finger, so how about we go for a more click-baitey intro. You’ll never believe how Queenstown leaders are going to spend $1.68 BILLION of your money. Public consultation on the $1.68 BILLION plan opened the Friday before last, coincidentally the same day Tourism Minister Stuart Nash was in town laying out his vision for a sustainable tourism industry - basically fewer tourists, paying more. It’s a vision which I’m not sure necessarily supports spending $1.68 BILLION in a district so reliant on the tourist dollar, as has been painfully confirmed over the past 12 months.

When this capital investment programme was first introduced back in 2018, it was $990m, three times larger than any previous plan. Now, in three short years, it’s shot up by almost $700 million. Extra spending includes: $51.3m for a Queenstown Performing Arts Centre, $52.4m for Wanaka Water Treatment, $38.7m for a Resource Recovery Park, $24.2m for the Wanaka Sportsfield development. The average rates rise of 4.3% per year over the 10 years seems reasonable, but that factors in $162.8m from the far-from-certain visitor levy for the final seven years. You can add another 2.3% per annum for those years if it doesn’t get off the ground. Then there’s proposed increases to user charges and the targeted CBD rate. And debt, council debt will rise to $732m by year seven of the plan, although that’s expected to eventually be paid back through development contributions. The whole epic document runs to 435 pages, although there is a 40-page summary document. So, hook yourself up to a caffeine drip and sit down, preferably next to someone with an accounting degree, and work through the sucker. On p10, 11 and 12 of volume two, you’ll find a line-by-line, year-by-year, costed out detail of every project, from transport upgrades to three waters and community facilities. It’s big and ambitious, and we can never again accuse QLDC of failing to address infrastructure issues, but as you read it ask yourself one question, a question that’s unpopular in 2021 when Governments print money, and you can buy a Tesla with Bitcoin. Can we actually afford all this? By Paul Taylor

Pay more for parking, if there are any spaces left... by Paul Taylor

There’s a new way to pay for parking in Queenstown, but it will cost you 50 cents extra a pop. Queenstown’s council has partnered with PayMyPark app so that motorists can pay for parking through their phone and online. The app has already been adopted by various councils around the country. Casual users will pay a 50 cent free on each transaction, while account holders pay when transferring money to their PayMyPark account. Council property and infrastructure general manager Peter Hansby says the app will make it easier for residents and visitors. “PayMyPark will allow people to sort out their parking wherever they are,” he says. The app, which can be downloaded from the iTunes Apple Store and Google Play, notifies users when paid parking is about to expire. It also allows time extensions and, if parking is finished earlier than expected, refunds. The perennially thorny issue of parking in Queenstown, both downtown and elsewhere, is the topic of debate at special Shaping Our Future (SOF) forum next Tuesday. Queenstown App revealed back in November that Queenstown Lakes District Council will no longer be able to force developers to include a minimum number of car parks in their plans for commercial, residential and visitor accommodation. QLDC must remove these minimum standards by February next year as required by the National Policy Statement - Urban Development. Green MP Julie Anne Genter, an expert in planning and parking management, will be at Tuesday’s SOF forum, at Remarkables Primary School, to explain the policy and what can be done to ensure it doesn’t result in public spaces being over-run with cars. “We are offering everyone the opportunity to discuss the implications of removing minimum onsite-parking standards from QLDC’s District Plan,” reads the SOF event blurb. “We want your help in exploring how effective or challenging various ‘solutions’ might be in different parts of the district. Local knowledge will be invaluable at this session. “We’ll finish off by developing a clear plan for the ‘next steps’ so this event leads to positive outcomes for our communities.” The free, two-hour forum, begins at 6.30pm, March 30.

Impact100 making a big Splash by Miranda Spary

There’s been so much talk about Impact100 lately and it’s all very exciting. For those who somehow HAVEN’T heard about it, it’s a very simple concept where one hundred women (sorry, chaps) each donate $1000. Once they have that money collected, they invite groups in the community to apply for the whole amount. The applications are considered, and the finalists present their projects, showing how they will use the money, who will benefit from this new project, and why their idea will make the biggest positive impact in the community. The important part is that it’s not just the group that is given the big prize that benefits. In this community, our Impact100 team has some members who are very qualified to help make decisions about grants - some are on the panels that assess applications to government, councils, charitable trusts and all sorts of other funding sources. They have been helping the community groups applying for the money by showing them about creating the necessary business plans, telling the story about their project clearly, and often suggesting different ways to raise the money they need. It often happens that the groups aren’t ready to use such a large sum of money, and they are given suggestions on how to develop smarter ways to operate.

2020 was the first year of Impact100 here (it’s been going in America for over twenty years and is now in many other countries). Despite our world stopping because of COVID, or perhaps because of COVID? 151 Wakatipu wonderwomen wanted to sign up, and because that meant an extra $51,000 the 151 members voted to give the four runners up a $5000 grant each. The big winner was Living Options which few people had ever heard of, and that is because most of us don’t have a disabled family member who needs fulltime care. Alexandra is, or was, the nearest location for this wonderful facility which means families have a safe and cheerful place to leave someone while they go and do whatever it is they have to do. Thanks to that $100,000 gift, there is now going to be such a house where local families who need some respite can access the help they need. And the other four charities all benefited as well. In fact, Turn Up the Music used their $5000 to make a video which was included in an application to a completely different funding source, and they received a further $50,000 which will be used to bring more music and music education to the Wakatipu. What a brilliant multiplying effect! Now you all know what good Impact100 does in the community, but for me, one of the best bits is that I’ve met so many brilliant, enthusiastic women. I thought I knew most people here (I’m 60 and have lived here for over fifty years) but I had no idea what terrific things are being done here. Men can’t join, but they are VERY welcome to sponsor a woman they know, or Impact100 can choose someone who has been nominated. It’s not meant to be about promoting your own business, but many of the members have been stunned by the support they’ve had from the group. It’s a total win/win for everyone the members, the community groups, the whole community. Come on board - there’s no compulsion to attend any of the events but there are so many fun formal and informal happenings for the group, that you’ll probably find it hard to resist.

COMMUNITY NOTES Wakatipu Reforestation Trust Autumn planting season is getting underway. This autumn, WRT is celebrating having planted 50,000 natives throughout the Wakatipu Basin since 2015. Established in 2013, the Wakatipu Reforestation Trust’s vision is the protection & restoration of the native biodiversity of the Wakatipu Basin through revegetation projects, collaboration, education & advocacy. Having planted 50,000 natives is a celebration of the dedication & commitment of all the volunteers who have and continue to support WRT’s vision by attending their Community Native Plant Nursery on Wednesdays, and attending our bi-annual planting campaigns. This year, WRT is launching the planting season with a celebration at their Whitechapel Reserve Keystone Site on Saturday 10th April. In addition to planting 1,500, natives there will be morning tea (courtesy of the Hilton Hotel), a community BBQ with music by No Trace Events, and a raft of very cool spot prizes including: - A Kereru Tour from Ziptrek Ecotours - Kiwi Birdlife Park - Annual Family pass for 2 adults & 3 children. - T-shirts & Plant snap from Trees that Count - Bee the Change honey from Whitechapel Hives - Whakatipu Wildlife Trust - Predator Trap and DOC Hut passes In total, there is four Saturday morning community volunteer planting days at the Keystone sites (dates/locations below). Locally in 2020, The Salvation Army Queenstown responded to more than 4,000 requests for help.

Nationally Resene paints customers have donated 275,000 cans of food during the Hunger for Colour Appeal. Held every February, the Resene Hunger for Colour Appeal sees cans swapped instore for Resene testpots. The cans bolster The Salvation Army’s Foodbanks at just the right time.

This included:

“Our Foodbanks are often depleted at the start of the year, when many people rely on them to put food on the table after meeting the extra expenses a new school year brings,” Salvation Army Territorial Director of Community Ministries, Jono Bell says.

“We are blessed that Resene ColorShops, like The Salvation Army, are based all around the country and people are generous in donating to their local foodbanks through this appeal.” Resene Queenstown ColorShop team says that they were thrilled by the response of their customers. ‘We’re really impressed by how many Queenstown people who have supported us this year. We’re very proud of being part of this campaign, working with people in the Queenstown area to make a difference for struggling people here and adding colour to customer’s lives.’

Phase 1 of the programme is scheduled to begin around May 2021 and will involve the removal of willow and its replacement with native plantings in the lower part of the Mill Creek and its wetlands at the north end of Lake Hayes. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the future “Vision for Lake Hayes” as well as to contribute ideas and to ask questions.

Investigation continues into Fridays Good Samaritan assault and robbery on Crown Range. by Paul Taylor

Queenstown Police say the investigation into the aggravated robbery of a man on the Crown Range Road is continuing, with a team of officers actively working on the case. The victim, who was seriously assaulted during the Friday night robbery, has undergone surgery for a fractured jaw and is recovering. Police are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen or found a grey backpack, which was stolen from the victim and may have been discarded after the robbery. A police spokesperson said: “The backpack contained a fleece top with the logo ‘Niagara Timber’ on it, and we would like to hear from anyone who may have come across this item in the Crown Range / Queenstown / Wanaka areas.” The victim was assaulted and robbed at about 10:30pm, Friday, March 26, when he stopped to help an unknown man who was signaling for help using a cellphone torch, at the Eastburn Road layby on the Queenstown side of the Crown Range. After stopping and getting out of his car, the victim was asked to look at an issue with the other man’s vehicle. As the victim turned away he was punched several times by the man, who then grabbed the victim’s backpack and drove off in an unknown direction. Detective Sergeant Derek Shaw, Central Otago CIB, described it as a “cowardly attack on a well-meaning person who was trying to help someone he thought was in need”. The victim was able to drive to a family member’s house. The attacker is described as being around 182cm tall (6ft), aged between 25 and 35, of stocky build, brown-skinned, and has a bushy hairstyle. His vehicle was described as a black or dark coloured four-door saloon. “It is possible the offender was with others not seen by the victim, or that he may have tried to flag down other passers-by before or after this incident,” Shaw said. The offender may also have stopped in the Queenstown / Arrowtown area or in Wanaka either before or after the assault. Change is hard, change takes time, change is expensive Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland

Change is hard, change takes time. When you read this what do you think? What do you believe? Depending how you answer this, could be why you haven’t changed things, you know the one thing that you keep thinking, if only I could change that, life would be better. The truth is this is an urban myth, this is untrue, change can be fast and last, all it needs is the willingness to change and believe it is possible for you. I worked with a client recently who believed that change was going to take a long time; perhaps it wouldn’t happen to her. What I asked her to do was to find three people either people who she knew or people in history that had what could be called a difficult start to life, yet achieved great things. What’s different is that these people really achieved great things in their life because of what they believed was possible for them. What she realized was that they had actually created change in their own life to move away from the unresourceful start that hard in life and create the life they wanted. Just by doing this one exercise my client quickly realized the change can happen quickly and for anyone. One thing that she struggled with was what change she wanted in her life. And here’s why. Most clients are able to tell us what it what is that they want to move away from however when we ask them what it is that they would rather have in their life this is why they get stuck. It’s sometimes hard to think about what you would rather have because so much energy is being spent on what it is that you wanting to get rid of and move away from. So here’s something that’s going to help you instantly. Just spend some time really creating a movie of what you would like your future self to be like. Climb into the movie and see it through your own eyes noticing what you notice in this short movie of your future life.

Ensure that you can hear an external soundtrack plus what’s your internal dialogue? And more importantly the last component is how does all this make you feel? What we’re doing here is creating what we call a future memory and giving the powerful part of your neurology the detailed information of what this future memory will look like. This is really powerful because what we’re using is the language of the brain. You’re imagining seeing something, you are imagining hearing something and you are imagining what your internal dialogue will be and all of this drives a certain feeling. Most people do this without realizing. Think about people that create anxiety. What happens is they create a future movie they imagine seeing things, hearing things they’ll have an internal dialogue and all of this will make them feel anxious. Anxiety is an emotion of the future therefore nothing has happened yet nothing is real yet it feels real on the body. Doing the simple exercise and focusing on what it is you do want rather than what you dont want is really powerful and allows your unconscious mind to really grasp what it is that you wanting to attract into your future. Let me share with you an extract from an email that the client sent to me just yesterday. “It has been awhile since I have been in touch with you. A little update on myself, I finished studying at University in 2019 where I graduated with a Bachelor of Teaching. With the skills you enriched me with I was able to complete university and move out of home. I remember you worked with me to play a mind movie of myself walking across the stage and receiving my degree. It was a pretty cool feeling when this played out in real life!” Change can be fast and change can last. All you need to do is believe it to be true. Just doing the simple exercise will allow you to feel different about your future. If you’re really serious about change and you want to create new things in your life then my recommendation would be to reach out to a reputable coach who can help you along this journey. It is so wonderful when people grasp the concept that change is possible and in my experience it’s fast and it lasts.

Arts+Culture NZ Society of Authors selects local writer for 2021 mentorship The NZ Society of Authors mentorship programme is for writers who want professional development, a safe space to discuss their work, intellectual community, role models, accountability and substantive feedback. The programme is designed to give beginning or emerging writers who demonstrate potential and commitment the opportunity to work closely with an experienced writer as their mentor in order to hone their writing skills and, in the process, take a piece of work from the early stages to a polished manuscript with potential for publication. Local writer Bethany Rogers, who also regularly contributes to Queenstown Media Group including Lakes Weekly and Source, was one of thirteen emerging writers and the only one from the South Island, to have been selected for the New Zealand Society of Authors (Te Puni Kaituhi O Aotearoa) Mentorship Programme for 2021, from what the judges described as: ‘an incredible and unprecedented 132 applications. Applications came from across the literary spectrum. Poetry, speculative fiction, creative nonfiction, literary novels, genre fiction and stage plays were all represented in the applications’. Bethany commented on learning of her selection. “I’m beyond excited to have been selected. I don’t know who my mentor will be just yet, but I’m looking forward to working with them on my short story collection. It’s been in progress for a while; this mentorship opportunity feels like a big hurdle has been removed. Part of me keeps expecting a call to say there’s been a mistake! Art News Starkwhite opens Queenstown gallery Contemporary art gallery Starkwhite has opened a new space in the heart of Queenstown. the gallery will present a series of solo exhibitions and also group shows. Starkwhite is known for

working with some of Aotearoa–New Zealand’s most celebrated contemporary artists and representing them overseas at prestigious art fairs including Art Basel, Art Basel Hong Kong, Art Los Angeles Contemporary, and Sydney Contemporary. Following a successful 3-week pop up gallery programme earlier in the year, Starkwhite will be open in their new premises in Beach Street throughout 2021. The gallery hours are Wednesday to Friday 11am–5.30pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am–5pm. Gallery Director Dominic Feuchs says, “We’ve been overwhelmed by the response the gallery has had in the brief time we’ve been open. It’s been a very easy decision to extend our stay. Queenstown allows us to broaden our programme while also engaging with a new audience. I understand that Queenstown is going through a tough time as the borders remain closed, but hopefully some businesses will see opportunities that can support Queenstown until international tourism bounces back.” The gallery will be directed by Starkwhite Associate Director (Curatorial) Kelly Carmichael, an established curator and critic in New Zealand and abroad, who looks forward to engaging with the local creative community and art collectors. Starkwhite has a series of talks and events planned at the gallery over the next few months and the first event kicked off last Friday with Govett-Brewster Art Gallery’s new director Zara Stanhope and Len Lye Curator Paul Brobbel sharing their insights into their programme of contemporary art and the world of Len Lye.

We get announcements from government that they are making an announcement, but the announcement is just announcing a new date for said announcement. I’m busy bothering the Health Department to see what, if any, provision has been made for COVID vaccinations in the South Island - we are obviously of minimal interest to those who rule us from the north, and so far there has been exactly ZERO response.The Environment Court agreed that the trees right by the Christine’s Hill part of the cycle trail were illegally planted and must be removed. QLDC’s response to a query about their inaction so far is the fuzzy mumble below “Our Enforcement team will follow up with the property owner in question to work towards compliance with the Environment Court decision. This will be undertaken in a practical and reasonable timeframe.

There was a lot of miscommunication at the weekend at my old boarding school’s 125th birthday. So many wobbly, blind and deaf old dears hearing quite different things from what was actually said. The organisers had made LARGE SHOUTY PRINT nametags with married names,instead of maiden names. Given that we had no idea what our married names would be when we were at school, and that we’ve long stopped looking youthful , and are now totally unrecognisable, this did not help with the general confusion. But it was very good fun all the same. One of my best friends choked on a falafel (who said vegan food was good for you?) and ended up vomiting in a rubbish bin within five minutes of the cocktail party starting - oh how we laughed until we realised she was actually choking. We went out for dinner at Plato and our own Jan Hunt brought her husband. He was the only male in any of the three large groups of very noisy old schoolgirls, and as we left, the lovely French waiter begged him to stay, and not leave him alone with all these crazy birds. The boarding house was set in Dunedin’s magical green belt - a giant ribbon of native bush full to the brim with birds and berries and lovely walking tracks. We walked up and down the bush track to the school twice a day and were always warned never to walk alone as PERVERTS inhabited the bush and did unspeakable things involving raincoats and bits of themselves. We were so keen to see one, and we often chose one of us go ahead alone to see if the lone girl could lure one out of hiding, then they were to shout so we could all run and see for ourselves. Sad to say, we never ever saw one. We were also told never to get undressed in our dorms with the lights on and the curtains open as PERVERTS might spy on us. Because the boarding house rules meant that even teenagers had to have lights out at 8.30, we discovered a very good way to stay up later was to confess to the matron in a shaky, quivering voice that we had accidentally left the curtains open, and we think we saw a man out there. Immediately the police and dogs would arrive and it would be at least an hour before the lights had to go out again. You had to be very inventive to have fun, when the point of boarding school was to prevent it. These days, S Hilda’s is a million times nicer - the girls tell me they don’t spend all Saturday doing punishment duties (ie cleaning the boarding house and the headmistress’ car) and have beautiful common rooms and luxuries like kind matrons who don’t smoke. These days the boarders are treated with respect and dignity and we were hugely impressed with how respectful and dignified they are - maybe if we had been treated that way, we wouldn’t have been quite so rude and rebellious.

CITY WALKS

WALK AROUND THE GLOBE WITHOUT LEAVING HOME.

Arriving in a new city and walking around as part of the crowd, just taking in the streetscape and mingling with the locals is one of the joys of “arriving’. Sitting outside with a coffee and enjoying the people watching experience immerses me in the local momentum of the city in which I’ve landed. It was always delightful to immediately start to blend into the rhythm of the city. I say, was as it’s now well and truly over a year since the international travel rug was pulled out, which has only made me miss international travel more and I eagerly look forward to the time when it will return. Meantime I’ve discovered I am able to get a sample of that travel feeling when recently I came across City Walks https://citywalks.live/ . Until it’s safe to get back out there, this is a terrific short-term travel fix. The site features filmed walks through metropolitan areas around the world, all without narration that allows me to virtually experience them just as if I was actually there. City Walks was created by Aristomenis Georgiopoulos and Artemis Stiga as a way for everyone to “explore the world from your screen.” They are a couple of programmers that love traveling. During covid-19 traveling is difficult especially international travel, so they created the citywalks.live platform that enables anyone to virtually wander around the world. The platform features videos of walks through cities like Amsterdam, Kuala Lumpur; Rio de Janeiro; Lyon in France; Rome; Chicago; Montevideo; Taipei; Hanoi, Vietnam and of course New York and Sydney. Barcelona and Amsterdam were two cities I visited just prior to lockdown, and it’s a great way to remember that European trip and the city streets we wandered as if it was in another lifetime. It’s a wonderful opportunity to take your time to explore the world from your screen. Each city walk gives you the option to walk the streets in a day or night mode, which in turn plays a corresponding video either filmed during the day or at night. Another option is to watch videos that were filmed during COVID-19, which, depending on which city you select, can make the city feel like a ghost town and is somewhat depressing, after all cities are about people coming together. I do recommend turning on City Walks Sounds, which allows the city to come to life, by hearing the sounds of people talking, cars and motorbikes driving and honking, street buskers, and restaurants with outdoor dining. The team that put City Walks’ videos together does a wonderful job capturing life in these big cities with their colorful and lively streets filled with people, cars and a constant ebb and flow of music, to the peaceful tree- and flower-lined park pathways and back streets—it all goes a long way to keep my wanderlust at bay especially tucked away in Queenstown where it unusually quiet while I hanker for the opportunity to visit a major overseas metropolis again. Of course, it not the real thing but it’s the closest thing I’ve had to a real international holiday in over a year. The sight and sounds are fantastic and hopefully in the next twelve months vaccines will allow travel again farther than even Australia. When that happens, being there in person to smell, taste the food and feel our feet grow tired after walking around exploring all day will be back. After a days exploring is always a great reason to plop down in a neighbourhood bar and enjoy an afternoon cocktail. Can’t wait!! Try City Walks and listen to the sounds of the city. I promise you will love it.

Housekeeper

It is essential that the successful candidate for this position, which will consist of a minimum of 30 hours per week (full time) and 10 -15 hours per weeks casual, will possess the following attributes: • Previous experience in a housekeeping role, with unsurpassed levels of attention to detail • Previous experience working with food, particularly breakfast service • A desire to deliver and exceed expectations in guest service • High motivation and energy levels • Flexibility to work morning and evening shifts, including weekends and public holidays • A pride in their personal grooming

Breakfast Chef /Guest Service Host (Combine role)

It is essential that the successful candidate for this position, which will consist of a minimum of 30 hours per week, will possess the following attributes and the ability to perform both aspects of the role: Breakfast Chef (Part of the role) • Previous experience serving high quality breakfast in a similar environment • A high level of organisation and attention to detail • A desire to deliver and exceed guest expectations • A friendly and approachable attitude • The ability to work independently Duties will include: • Opening and closing the kitchen independently, ensuring a tidy handover between chefs • Prepare and produce a high-quality gourmet buffet & a la carte breakfast menu for in house guests (with only 6 rooms, that is a maximum of 12 guests) • To be creative and flexible to work with guests needs and wants (we prefer our breakfast menu to act as a guideline, and we encourage guests to order what they please) • Ensure guests receive breakfast orders in a timely manner while maintaining the highest of standards • Prepare and produce a nutritious staff lunch for our team while working within the staff meal budget • Use time efficiently during breakfast service; preparing staff lunches, baking for guest’s afternoon tea, & preparing canapes for the evenings hosted canapes & drinks • Be pro-active in controlling food costs whilst ensuring standards are maintained • Assist with orders of supplies and equipment • Comply with nutrition, hygiene, and food safety standards
