Road cone reproduction is on steroids Take a walk around Queenstown CBD and it seems every missing tourist has been replaced by a road cone. There’s so many of them I fear they might be reproducing, like we’re in some budget sci-fi film. You take your eyes off one for a second and another appears, silent, ominous, orange. And I have some bad and good news - the invasion of the road cones is going to continue for at least a decade. Queenstown Lakes District Council, in partnership with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and other organisations, is planning to spend more than $1.4 billion on capital works projects before 2030. That’s billion with a ‘B’. Backed by Government funding, over the next three years alone they’ll spend $60 million improving Brecon Street, Rees Street, Beach Street and Park Street, and $65 million on the first stage of the downtown bypass, and $90 million on the Frankton Road / SH6 Ladies Mile corridor, including a new roundabout at the Lake Hayes Estate turnoff and major upgrade of Frankton’s BP roundabout. Then, there are stages 2 and 3 of the bypass, and the redevelopment of Lakeview, and the Stanley Street bus interchange, and Project Manawa off Ballarat St, etc, etc (all this is detailed inside, page 16). I say ‘bad and good news’ because Jesus are we in for some short-term pain and disruption. Look at the traffic congestion caused by the $6 million project to build a new slip road to Quail Rise. That was mostly out of the way. And the borders will, you’d hope, reopen before even the first of these projects are complete. What are the tourists going to make of our picturesque town when it looks like a congested building site? Not very Instagram-able. The good news? Queenstown’s been playing catch up on its infrastructure for a decade, particularly transport, so at least we’re finally doing something about it, while reviving downtown and providing much-needed jobs. And all this will be incredible when it’s finished. Imagine catching one of the frequent buses to downtown, cutting through any traffic on dedicated bus lanes, alighting at a new interchange, to watch a concert in a purpose-built venue, or dine in one of the new public squares, or wander up to Lakeview for drinks and the, erm, lake view. I suppose it’s about finding the balance between disruption and improvement. Hopefully the short-to-medium term pain will be worth it for the long-term gain. Just watch out for those cones. Cardrona Alpine Resort has announced it is opening up the Soho Ski Area with a new chairlift, which is already under construction. The Willow Quad chair will provide access to 65ha of primary and intermediate level terrain on the southern face of Mt Cardrona, overlooking Queenstown and Arrowtown. Cardrona general manager Bridget Legnavsky says: “Our dream is to create a ski experience unlike anything else in New Zealand, where you go on an adventure through different valleys and basins while soaking in fantastic views . “This move into Soho Ski Area is the first step in unlocking that vision.” Wayfare, the Queenstown-based tourism giant that owns the ski field between the resort and Wanaka, announced in 2018 it had partnered with local businessman John Darby to develop the Soho Basin. It said the development would see Cardrona more than double in size, with Soho’s addition of 500ha of high-altitude skiable terrain. More lifts in Soho are planned for the future, including the main Soho express chairlift which will link the area to the top of Captain’s Basin. But for the 2021 season, the Willow Quad will connect with the Skyline run, down from the top of McDougall’s. The ‘new’ Willows Quad is actually the McDougall’s Quad, which was replaced by the Chondola. It was recommissioned by Doppelmayr to be installed in Pringles, until the discovery of rare lizards stopped that project. Willows is made up of two big bowls, with undulating south-facing terrain and fantastic snow quality. The area is named after the Ron Howard’s cult classic movie Willow, starring Val Kilmer, which was filmed there back in the late ‘80s. Valley View Quad will also be back operational in 2021, so in total the resort’s uphill lift capacity will be 44 per cent greater than it was in 2020. And, any decent skiers or boarder who want to work there, or at NZSki’s The Remarkables and Coronet ski fields, now’s your chance. Ski field operators are urging New Zealanders to fill the gap left behind by international workers as the ski season rapidly approaches. The industry estimates they will be short 1200 seasonal workers for the upcoming season as half the workforce is traditionally from overseas. Legnavsky told RNZ recently, the industry is collaborating so the “domestic workforce becomes our fundamental workforce” in future. NZSki boss Paul Anderson said his ski fields are bringing back an apprenticeship initiative they ran 15 years ago. “The Rookie Programme is a professional pathway to becoming a Snowsports Instructor that allows anyone who is an advanced skier or snowboarder to gain an internationally recognised Level 1 qualification while working and earning.

Arts+Culture Calling all teddy bears: big picnic next month!
If you head down to the Event Centre this weekend, you’re in for a big surprise… Teddy bears and their humans are invited to the Events Centre on 11th April (11am – 2pm) to take part in a grand teddy bears’ picnic. Originally the Teddy Bears picnic was to be held this Sunday (7th of March), it’s been rescheduled as a result of the updated Alert Levels. On the 11th there’ll be music and dancing, popcorn and barbeques, stories and fairies. The QLDC initiative aims to bring our communities together post-Covid; it’s free and suitable for kids of all ages (but aimed at those up to 12 years old). All you need to do is bring your favourite teddy bear along to join in the fun. We gave organiser Janey Rae Labes and her teddy bear a call to find out more. What can we expect at the Teddy Bears’ Picnic? Lots! There’ll be entertainment on the stage, roaming characters, a real life teddy bear, games and prizes, bubbles, hula hooping, sports games to try, a horizontal bungy and bouncy castle, free face painting and a free sausage. What sort of food will be at the picnic? There’ll be Suma’s sushi, Vice cream (delicious dairy-free ice cream), Pop n’ Gales popcorn and even a free BBQ. You can bring along your own picnic, or buy treats from the vendors. Apart from their humans, is there anything the teddy bears should bring? There will be prizes for best dressed and you can interpret what that means, whether it’s a fancy, well-pressed outfit or something crazy that your teddy bear is dressed in. Teddy bears can show us how loved they are and there’s prizes up for that too! Tell me a little bit about the storytellers involved? There’ll be local author Laura Shallcrass with her beautifully illustrated book, Hare and Rere. Musician and author Gemma Carroll will be bringing her new book too, Bongo’s Adventures – the Stowaway Mouse, this is a wonderful book that she completed in lockdown.
There will be a story telling area, our local library will be in the Beautiful Belle Tent with a cozy corner to read stories and discover new books. Can you tell me a little bit about the music? The music is local too. Gemma Carroll, as well as presenting her new book, will be singing with her husband John. Children’s performer Margaret Amor will entertain the children with some of her original kids songs and vibrancy. The Turn up the Music Trust will present a musical piece from their band and a group of ballet performers from the Wakatipu Conservatoire of Ballet will perform a couple of routines, including a dance to the Teddy Bear’s Picnic Song. What else is happening? This event will be inviting for kids up to 12 years old, so not just the young ones! We have the horizontal bungy operated by Bungy and a bouncy castle for the smaller kids. Emma and her team from Sports Coaching will be in the cricket nets with demonstrations and a chance to hit the ball. Big games and colouring in will also feature at this event. There’ll be a police car and fire engine, and Civil Defence and other community groups like Happiness House, Plunket and Big Buddy will feature at the event too. The term “fast fashion” refers to low-price clothes that move from the catwalk to a mass market by replicating current luxury fashion trends...what’s not to love about that? Fast fashion is characterised by a short lead-time, mass production, and quick inventory turnarounds, with up-to-date merchandise produced bi-weekly by the mass market. It basically enables consumers to obtain satisfaction with affordable and ontrend clothing pieces at low prices, thereby fostering hyperconsumption. In our provincial town, it’s not in our face as it is in the big centres but it’s still here. Despite the obvious advantages for consumers, fast fashion has been criticised for its contribution to social and environmental hazards, such as poor working conditions in developing countries, intellectual property concerns, toxic chemical pollution, and carbon dioxide emission. Its rapid cycles encourage disposability which is an issue here as much as anywhere..

Participants limit their wardrobe for a month, with the goal of rethinking their relationship with clothing and fashion. Abbey from Wastebusters said that the first Six Items challenge had been embraced by people from all around Central Otago and this year we’re making it easier. “The feedback from our participants was that they learnt a lot by giving the Six Items Challenge a go. It’s a chance to take a break from buying new clothes, and make the most of what you already have in your wardrobe.” A 2020 report by The Formary found that the majority of New Zealand textile waste (including upholstery) ends up in landfill - an estimated 220,000 tonnes every year. Globally, we continue to make vastly more clothes than we could ever wear (an estimated 150 billion items per year for a population of 7.8 billion). The production of these items creates more climate emissions than aviation and shipping combined, so thinking about clothes differently is an opportunity to effect change. Sustainable Queenstown and Wastebusters hosted the launch to the six items challenge with a clothes swap at the Sherwood last Friday night with speakers promoting different ways to create style...thanks to Walk in Wardrobe and Recycle Boutique for their gift vouchers for participants. How to improve Queenstown’s mental health By Paul Taylor
Queenstowners are struggling to get help for their mental health, according to a new community-led report.
It will be 10 - 15% of our population, some will never be formally diagnosed. It will be a secret for them, they will be using so much energy just to get by that it will be exhausting, every minute of every day. What are we doing about this you might ask? I know I did and then I found out more, take a read if you want to know more too. The Dyslexia Foundation of New Zealand was set up in 2006 by parents who knew people needed help, and they have been on a mission ever since.
Services are under-resourced, difficult to access and mostly reactive rather than proactive. And, even in 2021, stigma remains about seeking support. The report follows the Wakatipu Mental Health Forum held in November last year. The 80 attendees included a cross-section of interested Wakatipu residents and local agency representatives. They were asked what they thought would support the community, what they believed the challenges were, and what strengths could be built on to help people be more resilient and deal with the mental health challenges ahead. Spokesperson Vanessa Van Uden, former Queenstown mayor, said that they were united in their concern over the devastating COVID-19-related impacts on locals and wanted to meaningfully contribute to guiding the wider recovery, resilience and future wellbeing of the Wakatipu community. “We wanted to come together to share our thoughts and find a collective voice to highlight the challenges and potential solutions for the community, by the community.”
In that time it has helped people recognise, understand and take action. It advocates in three areas, education, justice and the workplace. Much progress has been made.
They identified better access and centralised information about mental health and wellbeing providers, more community education, increased resourcing, and stronger connections as the four key areas for improvement.
The last part of the puzzle is a sharp focus on families. Those that have dyslexia need support, so do their supporters and although the first signs of dyslexia show up in learning struggles, it’s their emotional and psychological wellbeing that’s critical and here is why.

When a young person starts to notice they are different from their friends they start to install beliefs that do not serve them such as; I am not good enough. I am not smart. I can’t do this. I am a failure.
But, there were many positives too. There is a strong sense of community spirit, one that is caring and proud, the attendees reported. Queenstown’s environment, with so much nature close by, offers many opportunities to support wellbeing. There are some amazing community groups, services and events, also creating health and wellbeing opportunities. More can be done, though, to build and support them to ensure as many people as possible can benefit from increased connection and participation.
The literacy component is only one aspect of dyslexia, the other that has been invisible is their self-belief. This can last a lifetime and as each year goes by the limiting belief gets stronger, making life hard, reflecting all of the above beliefs even more.
And there are also talented, resourceful, diverse and innovative people in abundance, offering access to new income streams for services and projects. With better connections and more local focus, the community can help cocreate solutions, find new funding and provide the resources to deliver them.
And the truth is this can be changed fast and it lasts.
“We were delighted with the turnout to the forum and are very grateful to the participants for their invaluable insights and ideas,” van Uden says.

“We’d also like to thank Jason Medina and Anna Dow who stepped forward to share their powerful personal experiences to reinforce the need for better mental health support and education, and acknowledge the moving contribution from our Wakatipu schoolchildren. “They provided a beautiful visual demonstration of hope and remembrance through 654 colourful hearts and messages which represent the number of New Zealanders tragically lost to suicide in 2019/2020.”
Along with the DFNZ we launched this initiative on Saturday at Millbrook, Queenstown. Andrew Beecroft the NZ Children’s Commissioner endorsed DFNZ’s Belief Change. The Family Journey.
The forum and report were produced by a local volunteer group comprising Anne Marie Campbell, Daniel Sweeney, Kirsten Dennison, Vanessa van Uden, Anna Dorsey and Doctor Tim Rigg.

Queenstown becomes Cone-town By Paul Taylor
Queenstowners are set for a decade of disruption as more than a billion dollars of improvements are made to the town and its surrounds. Downtown, international tourists have already been replaced by cones, road signs and workers in high-vis vests, as a number of civil and commercial projects reach various stages of completion. The list of what’s on and what’s to come is both impressive and disconcerting. • Building a new Wastewater Pump Station at the Recreation Ground and upgrading the town centre pipeline (May 2020- October 2021) • Queenstown Town Centre Street Upgrades - $60m project to improve Brecon Street, Rees Street, Beach Street and Park Street (Jan 2021-March 2023) • Queenstown arterials stage 1 - a $65m upgrade of Melbourne Street and Henry Street, the first stage of a downtown bypass (July 2021-TBC) • Arterials stages 2 & 3 - upgrades and new roads between the Recreation Ground and Fernhill roundabout (TBC) • Project Manawa - a multi-million block of cultural, civic and commercial buildings stretching from the Memorial Centre to Ballarat St carpark (TBC) • Stanley Street bus interchange - new downtown transport hub (TBC) • Lakeview - a billion-dollar redevelopment of former campground into town centre extension. Seven stages over the next decade. (Construction 2023-2033) And that’s just downtown.
Works begins on the streetscape project on Upper Beach St. Starting this year and due for completion by 2024, is a massive project to upgrade the road stretching from the town centre all the way out to the Howard’s Drive turn-off to Lake Hayes Estate. • The $90m New Zealand Upgrade Programme Package for Queenstown provides bus lanes and bus priority on SH6A, a new bus hub on SH6, a remodelling of Frankton’s BP roundabout, a new roundabout at Howards Drive, and an underpass at Ladies Mile. • The $14m stage one of the Wakatipu Active Travel Network (WATN) will include improve cycling and walking routes from Jack’s Point to Frankton and from Lake Hayes Estate to Frankton Track. • A $2.27m walking and cycling bridge across the Shotover River at Arthur’s Point (2021-June 2022). There are also many other ‘minor’ projects, such as the new artificial multisport turf at Queenstown Events Centre, which is underway now. Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult recognises it will be a hard slog for locals and businesses while the projects are ongoing. “There’s never a good time to do these works, because it does cause disruption, but the inevitable truth is that sooner or later they need to be done.

“It’s just worked out that a lot is coming onstream at this point in time. “You could say the timing is good because clearly things are much quieter around town, but that’s not to say that people won’t experience disruption.” Boult says the plethora of projects, brought forward by Government shovelready funding, will provide jobs and some economic benefit to the town while times are tough for the tourism sector. “We’ve gone out of our way to ensure local contractors get a large percentage of the work. “Aside from whether the contractor is local or otherwise, I’m also confident that a large number of local people will get the jobs.” He’s also confident the council can handle the workload. Further down the pipeline, there are plans for a $20m new road bridge across the Shotover at Arthur’s Point, likely in the early 2030s, and $151m upgrade of the Queenstown Events Centre, including an Emergency Precinct and the relocation of the golf course to Shotover Delta. Funding has to be found for both, however. And, of course, there could also be thousands of new properties, a parkand-ride, a second high school, and commercial buildings on either side of Ladies Mile, not to mention Frankton’s 30-year masterplan. Short term, commercial projects are also continuing apace, despite the economic downturn. Skyline’s $26m revamp of O’Connells Mall by Naylor Love is nearing completion, while it’s also due to spend more than $100 million upgrade the gondola and associated buildings.

Nearby Cook Brothers Construction are progressing with a major new commercial building on Brecon Street, while on Hallenstein Street construction continues on The Carlin Hotel, billed as Queenstown’s first sixstar hotel. Naylor Love is due to complete construction this year of the Clearmont Group’s prominent new hotel at Five Mile, which will be occupied by the Sudima Hotel. And just down the road, the massive Bunnings is also taking shape, as is the $20m new Southern Cross Hospital complex near Shotover Country. That shows businesses have confidence in the district’s recovery, says Boult. “There’s a recognition that we’re going through a tough time but let’s remember that this is one of the most attractive parts of the world to live and to visit, and sooner or later we will see the tourist industry come back.”

Did you make it to the Homeshow last week? If you did, you may have had the chance to chat about what goes in your recycling bin. The good news is that most people are doing a great job of understanding the plastics changes. They also know that paper, cardboard and cans continue to be recycled in their yellow bin.
Everyone at the Homeshow got a gold star for knowing that the only plastics we can now recycle in our yellow kerbside bins are plastic bottles and containers marked 1, 2 and 5. There are just two main exceptions to this rule, both relate to plastics marked 1:

• Meat-trays, punnets for fruit and tomatoes and biscuit trays can’t be recycled. • Coloured soft drink bottles can’t be recycled. The only real confusion was around coloured bottles. The main thing to remember is that coloured soft drink bottles can’t be recycled (or if you want to be technical, coloured bottles marked 1 can’t be recycled). Yes, you can still recycle other coloured bottles:

• Coloured glass bottles can be recycled in the glass recycling bin. • Coloured plastic bottles and containers marked 2 or 5 can be recycled in the yellow mixed recycling bin. The reason for the changes is to align with New Zealand’s commitment to move away from hard-to-recycle plastics and contribute towards better regulation of the international trade in plastic waste. It’s all about being transparent. If you can put it in your recycling bin, you know that an onshore reprocessor can make it into something useful. Think of it as a recipe, you need the right ingredients to make a dish. Throw some random stuff in and you’ll have some random dish - it’s not going to turn out how you wanted. It’s the same for reprocessors, the wrong type of packaging ruins their “dish”.

Take meat-trays, biscuit trays and punnets for example, which can be made of a range of plastic types. Because it’s pretty impossible to tell one seethrough plastic from another while sorting at speed in the Wakatipu recycling facility, there’s a risk that the wrong type of plastic will sneak in, ruining the end product. Our New Zealand reprocessor has imposed a blanket ban on meat-trays, biscuit trays and punnets from any recycling facilities that do not have expensive optical sorting equipment helping to tell plastic types apart, which we don’t have in the district. What about coloured plastics marked 1? It turns a murky brown hue when melted for reprocessing. Our reprocessor makes clear trays, so they’re not keen on murky brown. There is nowhere else we can send them for reprocessing, which is why coloured soft drinks bottles go in the rubbish bin. You probably already know that the blue recycling bin is for glass bottles and jars only. The biggest problems for glass recycling are crockery and the wrong types of glass sneaking into the recycling bin. Think about it, how can a cup or a plate be made into a glass bottle? It can’t - so any crockery goes in the rubbish bin. Other types of glass, like broken Pyrex oven dishes, windows and drinking glasses, also have to go in the rubbish bin. Different types of glass melt at different temperatures and are not interchangeable. The wrong type of glass and crockery cause significant losses in production of new glass bottles and jars if they get into the furnace, so just a small amount can stop a whole load of glass being recycled. By looking after our recycling bins, each of us is contributing to job creation (the recycling industry creates more jobs than the landfill industry), and we’re saving energy and raw materials in the production of new stuff. Recycling isn’t perfect but it is worthwhile if we all do it well. Double check our bin lid stickers to make sure you know what’s in and what’s not - new ones for the yellow bin can be picked up at QLDC offices and libraries. You can always jump on the QLDC Facebook page and send us a photo of any packaging you’re not sure about. And remember - our recycling is all about quality, so if in doubt, leave it out. Wastebusters supports QLDC’s shift in kerbside recycling of plastics and since 1 Dec, accepts only high value plastics which can be recycled onshore.

She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. Ooh my aching bum - haven’t ridden a bike in yonks and when one of my oldest friends (actually only 6 months older than me) said she wanted to ebike in the Wakatipu, I immediately put my hand up to join her gang. I rented a fab new bike from Better by Bike at the Dudley’s Cottage Precinct Arrowtown and off we roared. Mmm, make that wobbled, in my case. The trail down the Arrow River to Gibbston is so much better than last time I used it. Big congrats to the Wakatipu Trails Trust for all the new signs, and the wider paths. It was being enjoyed by riders of all ages from tiny children on the back of their parents’ bikes, to people even older than I am. Artists were painting and dogs were panting and cameras were snapping wherever we went. It’s hard to keep focusing on the trail when the views in all directions are so stunning. A would be bungy jumper chickened out three times while we waited with bated breath on the bungy bridge to see if she would finally take the plunge, and I know if it were me, I’d be very keen NOT to have an audience. So off we rode again. As we arrived at Kinross for lunch, I remembered it was Friday and my deadline for this column is midday. Yikes. I rang the bike company and yes they would come and pick me and the bike up. What a perfect arrangement - I got to have the very excellent lunch AND got back just a little late to write this. Somehow in New Zealand, it is always possible to fit more in than anywhere else in the world. At the last minute, I managed to get a ticket for the SOLEMIO concert in Invercargill. It was brilliant - those guys are so funny and naughty and talented. They insisted one local lady who was returning to her seat from the loos come and help them with a tribute to Christopher Plummer who died just recently. She was such a good sport about it and joined in on singing “Edelweiss” with them - so lucky it wasn’t me - I can’t sing for toffee and the audience would have been very grumpy.After the show, loads of young women were tearing down the Solemio posters to take home and waiting for a glimpse of the singers - one of them is in a TV programme called “The Bachelor” apparently, and they were very keen to get photos of themselves with him. Anderson Rocio did a fabulous warm-up show beforehand - especially as it was her first live performance - and then brought the packed house down when she and Solemio sang her song “Homeland” together as the grand finale. Very tempted to go and see it in Auckland in a huge arena with an 80 piece orchestra. If you haven’t been to Invercargill in a while, do go. Bonnie at BONZ recommended Louie’s tapas bar - they couldn’t have been more obliging about serving our very large table in quicksnap time to get to the concert, and the meals were Southland size (think huge) and utterly delicious. Next morning we ate at The Grille at Transport World. It’s worth driving to Invercargill just for that breakfast - and if there is anything less exciting sounding than a truck museum, I couldn’t think of it. How wrong I was - we spent 2 hours oohing and aahing at all these immaculately restored vintage vehicles and wonderful wearable art - the dresses made of disposable gloves and crushed nespresso pods were so beautiful! Oldies waxed lyrical about the old cars they used to drive, and children shrieked with joy at the huge Lego rooms and everyone wanted to lie down in the inflatable cinema pod. It’s a bit like being born when you clamber out through a tiny slit in the wall of the pod. John Kalb sells his pottery in the market at Earnslaw Park every week. My friend Diane has long admired his work, and he invited her(and tagalong me) to visit his workshop in Invercargill. It’s the ultimate Heath Robinson setup he and his engineer father have invented and built all sorts of machines that mix the different clays John digs up from local farms, then he squishes them in a kind of accordion machine to get the water out, then into a sausage making machine to make long fat ropes of useable clay. After shaping and glazing, they are stacked in precarious piles in the kilns and fiercely roasted to make elegant, useable dishes. Just like magic.
Macpac Motatapu cancelled By Paul Taylor
Queenstown’s iconic Motatapu event has been cancelled due to the change in Covid-19 alert levels. The off-road race through the high country station between Wanaka and Arrowtown was due to take place on Saturday, March 6. It was to be the first run for new local owners and management team Gemma Peskett and Craig Gallagher, after they bought the event from IRONMAN Oceania. But on Saturday, Prime Minister Jacinda Arden announced New Zealand will spend seven days at level 2, while Auckland is locked down at level 3. That means events are limited to 100 people, while Aucklanders can’t travel. Peskett said they’ve made the “incredibly disappointing” decision to cancel the 2021 event. “Our competitors are our top priority, and their health and wellbeing has been the number one factor in this decision.” “We realise that this decision will affect all our athletes who have put in countless hours training and appreciate and share their disappointment.” Earlier in the year, the team investigated running the event with groups of 100 but it is not feasible to ensure the groups would not mix, across the four different converging courses. “We would need to remove all aid stations and this compromises athletes’ safety and thus our safety management system. “We have a responsibility to manage the safety of everyone out on our race course, including our medics, volunteers and staff, as well as competitors.” Postponement to Sunday 7 March or till a later date is not financially viable, with some key operational services unable to be changed as well as weather considerations for later dates and the safety of people out in the backcountry. The policy for Covid cancellation is a 25% refund, however, they will instead offer 60% refunds, or entries can be transferred to next year, March 5, 2022. Transport will be refunded at 90% and any pre-bought photo packages will be refunded in full. “We have incurred costs up to this point around staffing, consents and permits, registration fees, radio repeaters have already been helicopter deployed into the course, medals, accounting and legal fees, marketing, advertising and signage.” Instructions will be sent to athletes in the coming days on how we will process the refunds and transfers. “We would like to thank all our supporters, partners, sponsors, volunteers, staff and most of all our athletes who have sent us such wonderful messages of positivity and support. We are really blown away by you all.” “Although we are incredibly disappointed to have had to cancel we know it is the socially responsible thing to do and the only viable option for the event, but we want to assure you we are already working towards 2022 with passion and we will bring you a fantastic Macpac Motatapu 2022 on 5 March.“

TECHNOLOGY UPGRADE RAGE As time has rolled on, increasingly our older phones can’t be updated anymore. As new phones get released the vendor stops updating the operating system on the more ‘vintage’ phones some of which don’t seem to be that ‘old.’ The Google Pixel2 phones released in 2017 found out at the end of last year that they would no longer be getting system or security updates. Apple is not immune to this either, as Apple watches don’t always work with all Apple phones. If you bought an Apple watch SE or an Apple Watch 3 last year, you’d have to have an Iphone 6 or higher to operate it.
IS IT TIME FOR A SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGY ERA? So, what’s the solution to the more disposable and expiring technology? One suggestion is that manufacturers move to making devices more modular, comprised of several detachable components. These could then be replaced as they expire, just like we are able to do with desktop computers by replacing the video card, sound card or other components. Some manufacturers have tried this approach with a modular phone but with limited success. The idea of modularisation results in a larger, device in a world where thin is everything.
Unfortunately we have the march of technology to blame, it wasn’t that long ago you’d buy a laptop and it would come with software that you could use across multiple devices, not anymore and of course we now have to buy not inexpensive monthly subscriptions to software rather than buying the program that would last happily for decades. Technology has also required more and more apps to have network connections to operate so they can use updated features. Wireless networks are going to be the same soon as 3G gets older and 5G replaces it. Older WiFi devices running on older standards can have trouble even now connecting to new networks. In the world of cellular networking, some parts of the old 3G network, which powered the iPhone 3G released a little more than ten years ago have been shut down in some countries, with the whole service likely to be scrapped in several years. Even if you could power up that old iPhone, it wouldn’t get any phone service.
Perhaps the best we can hope for is for manufacturers to work harder to recycle and upgrade devices. Companies such as Apple already do this, with machines that can disassemble iPhones and remove the precious metals and components for recycling, but more work needs to be done. Some service providers offer trade-in in deals for old phones but you still have to pay for a new phone. Many people aim to use older devices to avoid paying for a new device. One day manufacturers may be willing to do a straight swap, new for old with no or limited money down but until that day we will live with our expiring culture for a while.

COMMUNITY NOTES Queenstown Playcentre Queenstown Playcentre is an Early Childhood Education and community organisation which offers endless opportunities for children to play, explore, create, run, jump, climb and get messy. Parents are actively involved in their children’s play and preschool education as well as being involved in the Playcentre community – making friends with other parents in a supportive and friendly environment. Queenstown Playcentre have an incredible large, sunny outdoor play area with a large sandpit, climbing fort, and mature fruit trees and vege garden. There is a warm spacious indoor area with loads of room for kids to climb, paint and play regardless of the weather. The children enjoy directing their own play in a safe environment where they can play whilst parents have a tea or coffee and enjoy each other’s company. Mother of two, Sarah says “sometimes you just don’t want to deal with your kids at home, especially when its cold and wet outside. Its really lovely to be able to come to Playcentre where there’s tonnes of space for them, they can do what they want, Alex (the educator) finds an amazing game for them and I can drink a coffee while it’s still hot”. Playcentre fosters an environment where parents and children come together to play, have fun and make lasting friendships. Sessions are mixed age and are suitable for children from birth to 6 years. The Playcentre is easily accessible on Stanley Street, with free parking and a bus stop outside. They offer three free sessions for families to trial Playcentre, and term fees start at $30 for one child with additional family members $5 extra per term. Art Therapy Art Therapy is a creative expression that enhances brain function and wellbeing. It is a great opportunity to create something without expectations or pressure. You don’t need specific skills or experience with materials to enjoy Art Therapy. It is a fun way to express yourself non-verbally and something different to try. Art Therapy Sessions are being run by Jenna Welsh-O’Hare for elderly clients and individuals with physical/learning disabilities. Sessions are not lessons. They are more based around the therapeutic benefits of creating something and the positive feelings that come with it. You are activating both sides of the brain during Art Therapy and it releases Endorphins in the process. Within groups it is a great way to bringing people together.

The skills and knowledge that will be covered include understanding health and safety, communicating effectively, measuring and tolerancing, utilising the appropriate tools for each job, working with materials and metals at our disposal, sketching, interpreting drawings, completing trade calculations, and building and repairing a broad range of machinery using a basic knowledge of welding, fitting, mechanics, hydraulics, pneumatics, and assembly. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain the formal qualification of “National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Level 4)” while working in an exciting, fast-paced industry.
