Be Proud Queenstown It was with great trepidation that we asked local businesses to tell us how they were traveling in a recent JobFix Survey. Local business is what drives our town. How the local business community feels affects us all. At the time the survey was due to be conducted, Auckland had just been locked back down unexpectedly, severely impacting local business. If the results were ugly, we were all looking at a tough few months. So, we gulped and asked local business people how confident they were feeling. The survey was a week in length and finished on the 25th August. The results confirmed the tenacity and sheer will to succeed this district is renowned for. Instead of whining, our business community is digging deep and getting on with life as it is. Understandably, 80% of the 199 businesses that responded had accessed the Government Wage Subsidy scheme. It has enabled more people more people to remain employed than would have otherwise been possible and also allowed businesses breathing space to adjust to our current environment. Many have adapted and innovated in that time creating new businesses and new opportunities. Pivoting is the buzz word of this brave new world we live in. Nearly 70% of respondents believe their Queenstown business will survive purely on a domestic market and while having the Aussies here would be ideal, 80% do not want the bubble to open until the Aussies have sorted out their community transition issues.

In terms of how the business community is feeling about the current trading environment there is a fair dose of optimism. Of course, that is balanced with anxiety and uncertainty especially if the situation changes again. Businesspeople on the whole do not expect Queenstown to return to ‘normal’ anytime soon with most saying they do not expect a full recovery for 2-3 years, even longer. Buying local in the meantime is a huge theme that has come through in the results. Those on the front line appreciate that locals are actively supporting local business and they are seeing it in their figures. That is a real key to keeping the local economy alive. Two thirds report seeing the impact of local custom in their stores. It is obvious that our businesspeople are supporting each other, particularly our local cafes, restaurants, and bars with three out of four respondents having eaten out in the last week. Perhaps the most heartwarming statistic to come out of our Jobfix Survey was that 60% of respondents had more concern for how others were being impacted and the wider Queenstown community than their individual business. Simply amazing. Clearly, Queenstown is a glass half full sort of town. We support each other in business as in life and prefer to roll up our sleeves than wallow in the mire. WELCOME TO SPRING! There’s been a noticeable increase of people out on the trails in the last couple of weeks, and it’s at this time of year when I reckon we really need to recognise how lucky we are – being able to ski with the family in the morning, and head out for a ride on the trails later in the day! We know how much the trails mean to our community year round, so we’re on a mission to build more and make sure every community in our district is well connected with a safe, off-road trail network, whether it’s for training, commuting or simply a recreational apres-ski amble to the nearest coffee shop. Our Resource Consent application is progressing well, and we are hopefully not far away from being able to put the Tucker Beach-Arthurs Point-Arrowtown project out to tender. This will coincide with stage 1 of the Active Transport network, with design well underway to make those same important community connections on the south side of the Kawarau River. With the spring thaw on its way - comes a re-start of some exciting projects on and around Coronet Peak, working with the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club and Elevate Trail Building to bring you some mouth-watering tracks soon to be revealed. The Coronet Loop Trail is close to halfway and the Bush Creek trail will get a spring freshen up just in time for this summer of riding – fingers crossed it will be another good one! Queenstown Trails Trust would also like to acknowledge the awesome work of the Workforce Alliance for carrying out a whole lot of upgrades and maintenance to the expanding trail network post COVID-19. News Round Up A summary of major local news stories by Paul Taylor Social distancing on aircraft should be removed in time for the school holidays That was the big call from Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult and Tourism Industry Aotearoa chief executive Chris Roberts last week. They are urging the Government to review the “excessive” rules to help the struggling tourism industry. Under level two rules, Air New Zealand can sell only around 50% of seats on their turboprop aircraft and 65% on their domestic jets. Jetstar has temporarily withdrawn from the New Zealand market entirely due to the restrictions. Physical distancing is also increasing the price of flying because the cost is spread between fewer people. Cabinet was due to meet on Monday, September 14, to decide whether the country will remain under level two, after the Lakes Weekly Bulletin went to press. There are 97 active cases as of Sunday, with 58 of them community cases and 39 imported. However, with a positive test for a quarantine worker at Auckland’s Jet Park Hotel over the weekend, and continuing single figure new cases most days, it’s likely to be a difficult call for Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s Government. Boult said he understands the need to protect Kiwis from Covid-19. “However, given the requirement for masks I think the social distancing rules on aircraft are excessive. “We’re in an economically desperate situation and the district needs the additional travellers that a relaxing of distancing requirements would bring. “We are aware of current unsatisfied demand by would-be visitors to the district, which is frustrating given the position local businesses find themselves in. “I strongly urge the government to reconsider its opinion on airline distancing requirements.” The holidays begin on 26 September. TIA boss Chris Roberts says there’s “strong enthusiasm” from Kiwis to travel domestically, providing a “vital lifeline for struggling tourism operators”, but they need time to make bookings and capacity. “If social distancing remains in place, there just won’t be enough seats to meet demand during the school holidays,” Roberts says. He said the Government “needs to listen to epidemiologists like Professor Michael Baker and Associate Professor Nick Wilson, who have both been reported in the media as saying mask use is sufficient for safe flying.” News that New Zealand had missed out on hosting the Rugby Championship 2020 has come as a big disappointment for Queenstown, Boult said. Several organisations had put together a proposal for Queenstown to become a quarantine and host destination for visiting Australian, South African and Argentine rugby teams. However, competition body SANZAAR has awarded the competition’s hosting rights to Australia. Staging events is seen a crucial way to drive domestic tourism. On Thursday, tourism minister Kelvin Davis announced that a ‘Southern Lakes alliance’, including Queenstown, has scored a $8.5M grant from the central government’s regional events fund, to bolster the hard-hit events sector.

Immigration changes: Landscape shifts for workers, visitors and employers Gill Bonnett, Immigration Reporter, gillian.bonnett@rnz.co.nz Analysis - No fewer than five announcements in the last week have changed the immigration landscape for some workers, visitors and employers.

In what may or may not have been an explanation of the distinction made between those nationalities and our non-visa waiver countries, the immigration minister explained in a media release: "Partners from 61 visa waiver countries would need a visa to live here but could visit without having to hold a visa. "But under Covid border restrictions, partners of New Zealand citizens and residents wanting to enter this country need to have either a relationship-based visa, or be travelling with their New Zealand citizen or resident family member, or be ordinarily resident in New Zealand. "As more New Zealanders return from overseas, we want to enable them to be reunited with their loved ones here in New Zealand while also ensuring that only genuine partnerships are given that right." The next category off the block was arguably more straightforward - a 12-month visa extension for new residents, who had not been allowed in since March because they had not been resident here before - those who were packing up to come. In some cases with their house sold, kids out of school and belongings on a container ship. The extension means once the border restrictions are eased, their visa will still be valid. "These changes will provide around 5600 resident visa holders, who have invested a lot of time and money to be granted a resident visa, with more certainty about their ability to come and settle in New Zealand in the future," Faafoi said, in a media release.

Some partners of New Zealanders and temporary visa holders stuck overseas were given respite, and Labour announced it wants to give 10 percent of managed isolation facilities over to skilled foreign workers and investors, if it is re-elected. Other government changes included extensions to some visa categories and a loosening of the criteria that companies have to meet in order to recruit a new skilled worker from overseas. Immigration reporter Gill Bonnett takes a look at the flurry of announcements and what they all mean. Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi has been busy. First, a looming deadline of expiring visas was the catalyst for some visa extensions. He extended onshore visitor visas due to expire before the end of October for five months. He also introduced a new two-month Covid-19 short-term visitor visa for temporary migrants unable to leave New Zealand due to international travel restrictions when their visa expires. "The government is making short-term, practical changes to visa settings to help visitors and other temporary migrants remain in New Zealand lawfully," Faafoi said in a media release. Then this week, came the announcement that immigrant workers trapped outside the country when the border closed would be able to apply for a new border exception category. There may be fishhooks for some temporary work visa holders and their families, not least that they must have kept their job in New Zealand since March while living overseas. Their visa must not expire before the end of 2020, or if not, they must have applied for another visa a month ago - at a time when they did not know they would be allowed back in and offshore visas were not being processed. Other criteria include having lived in New Zealand for at least two years, or - if it had been one year - to be an entrepreneur operating a business, have had their children with them here or have submitted a residence application. "Many of these visa holders and their families have lived in New Zealand for years and have built lives here with the hope and expectation that they would be able to stay longer-term in New Zealand," said Faafoi in a media release. "It is only fair to let these visa holders return given their long-standing and ongoing connections to this country. "We are keen to give them certainty and welcome them back to New Zealand." The number of temporary workers overseas when the border was closed was estimated at 62,000. It may be testament to how the criteria have been drawn and the length of time that has elapsed before this announcement, that the government is now expecting up to 850 visa holders may be eligible for this category. Partners can come - depending where they come from The same day came news on partners of New Zealanders. The criteria that stood out were around nationality - only partners who come from Australia and visa-waiver countries would be eligible.

New workers and investors can apply for border places On Friday, the much-anticipated tweaking of the 'critical worker' border exemption arrived. This allows New Zealand employers to recruit highly skilled or technical staff from overseas if those skills are not readily obtainable here, compared to 'not obtainable' until now. "That wording change reflects that, in some fields, there is a very limited pool of experts and significant training would have to be undertaken before the skills were obtainable in New Zealand," said Faafoi, in a media release. Alan McDonald of the Employers and Manufacturers Association said executives, engineers and IT staff would be among those who may now qualify. Some businesses would feel the changes did not go far enough, he said, but the government was constrained by capacity in border management facilities. Hot on the heels of that final government announcement, the Labour Party said it wanted to offer one in 10 places at managed isolation facilities to those critical overseas workers and investors, if it is reelected. Labour leader Jacinda Ardern said a new investment attraction strategy would be created to bring in those new global investors. Labour would review immigration criteria to enable a broader range of workers to enter New Zealand, she said. For others, it's time to go home At the same time, a scheme called the INZ Repatriation Initiative emerged on Friday. The scheme will pay for flights for visitors and work visa holders who cannot afford to buy tickets home and cannot get their embassy to help. Immigration industry group NZAMI said estimates of people in that predicament numbered about 7000. Immigration New Zealand (INZ) indicated the help would be more limited as it is using money from its deportations budget - underspent because of Covid flight restrictions - to buy tickets once a means assessment was conducted. The applicant would have to repay the money before they could return to New Zealand. "We believe this is a humane and proper response for people who find themselves in extreme circumstances and who wish to go home but are unable to do so due to lack of funds," said Geoff Scott, INZ's general manager of verification and compliance. Some of those immigrants leaving the country or still stuck overseas have been in mental anguish, left destitute after they lost their jobs or with broken dreams of their futures in New Zealand. Others still struggle with what to do because they do not fit into an exemption category or cannot get a visa extension. But there was gratitude from those wanting to leave New Zealand that there would be help to get them home. "All of a sudden life has changed," said one man. "No more depression, no more fearâ€Ś God is good."

Bus fares and Bee Cards from Tuesday Queenstowner’s will start paying to use the bus again from this Tuesday, September 15. But the return to $2 fares, for the first time since April, does come with some benefits. Orbus is launching its new Bee Card and an improved timetable - which sees the Lake Hayes Direct become a permanent service 7 days a week, with new stops (see below).

Queenstown needed business from missed Rugby Championship, mayor says If the games had remained in New Zealand, the sides would have stayed in Queenstown. Nik Kiddle from the Lakes District accommodation sector says his members are desperate for business, such as the 200 rooms teams would have stayed in for two months. "Let's face it, New Zealanders have contributed their bit, they've been here, they've done that and we would welcome more. "But there's only so much that the domestic travel industry can fulfil and we really do need to have access again to international travel, even if it's managed and it's available to us in a limited way."

The Bee Card replaces the inconvenient GoCard, which could only be topped up in person, where they were sold. The tag-on tag-off Bee Card, which has already launched in Dunedin, can be topped up online. Masks are currently mandatory on public transport throughout New Zealand. People not wearing a mask could be hit with a $300 instant fine or a fine of up to a $1000 imposed by the courts. The main changes to the timetable are: • Route #1 will start and end in Sunshine Bay • Route #2 has additional trips for Arthurs Point and Arrowtown during the morning and afternoon peak • Route #3 now includes Shearer Road • Route #5 Lake Hayes Direct becomes permanent and will be 7 days a week. There are new stops at Hanley’s Farm, Akarua Wines on Arrowtown-Lake Hayes Rd and near Millbrook at the intersection of Malaghans Road. You can view the bus map here for new times on the online timetable. The new timetable is also on the Queenstown App’s Getting Around section. The on street timetables and printed maps will start to updated from Monday, 14 September. The Bee Card is available to order online or from bus drivers. It is also available from the Otago Regional Council (ORC) office at 1092 Frankton Road (Terrace Junction). The cards are free but when you order one online you'll need to top it up with a minimum of $5. Customers can transfer existing balances from a GoCard to a new Bee Card, until the end of October. The bus trips across the Queenstown network will cost $2 again. That includes a free 30 min transfer - so if you're catching a bus from town to Frankton and then another out to Shotover Country, for example, it's still only $2 in total. Youths (5-15, or under 20 with school ID) pay $1.50, under fives are free. Cash fares under the GoCard system were $5 (except $10 to the airport). ORC is proposing they be $3 in Dunedin for passengers without a Bee Card, but there is no word yet whether a similar fare will be introduced for Queenstown. The options for transferring credit or donating GoCard funds are available now at ORC’s website, from www.orc.govt.nz/bee-card.

The mayor of Queenstown Jim Boult said money offered by the Australian government to Sanzaar and a degree of procrastination are to blame for New Zealand losing hosting rights for the Rugby Championship. Boult said the loss of this much needed business is a bitter pill to swallow. He said this country took too long to cut a deal, and the Australians swooped in. "Horribly disappointed really, we being the council, along with the DHB, the hoteliers etc put a lot of effort into this to get it across the line." Boult said he offered to put up some of the council's money, but it was not enough. New Zealand Rugby Union chief executive Mark Robinson has said that New Zealand's quarantine protocols were a factor "meaning we couldn't win the bid".

Paradise to be further restored The category one listed heritage 'barn' at Paradise will be looking all that more idyllic with the contribution of $173,280 for its restoration. Central Lakes Trust trustees approved the grant at a board meeting in August. It was one of 11 grants approved by the Trust, totalling almost $500,000. "Paradise, as it is so aptly named, is a beautiful, remote spot in the world, next to a native beech forest on the edge of wilderness," says Paradise Trust chair, Tom Pryde. "The 'barn' on the Paradise Trust's 300 acres of land, past Glenorchy, is one of a number of heritage listed buildings on the property. "It also has a five bedroom guest house restored and available to the general public with a variety of accommodation options for a 'close to nature / wilderness / off-the-grid' style holiday." The barn's restoration is to provide a year-round all weather venue with practical usable space for events such as weddings. Central Lakes Trust supported Paradise Trust with $400,000 back in 2007 to repair and refurbish the historic homestead. Remotely located around 16kms north of Glenorchy, at the head of Lake Wakatipu near Diamond Lake, and close to the braided river valleys of Rees and Dart River, it offers a unique experience. The property was originally owned and built in1863 by William Mason, New Zealand Government's first architect. The Miller family bought the property in 1949, and Paradise Trust was formed when it was gifted by David Miller in 1998 to protect and preserve it.

Sunshine Bay's fight against 200-home development

Access and traffic considerations were also a major bone of contention for residents speaking yesterday, while several extolled the beauty of the land and its value to the community as a natural place. Kaari Schlebach said: "It will have massive impact on us in Sunshine Bay, and Queenstown, the environment and culture. "Once it's done, we can't take it back. This is precious land, a pristine area." Former mayor Vanessa van Uden also spoke in the public forum, telling councillors that she believed such a development shouldn't be enabled through the district plan review process. Once the review process is complete, Xin can instead apply for a private plan change, allowing for greater discussion and scrutiny. And, as with many development decisions, it can all be challenged through the Environment Court process.

Sunshine Bay residents have won the first battle against a housing development which they say threatens their way of life. Landowner Steve Xin wants to build 200 homes on his 6.5 hectares of sloping rural land, on the Glenorchy-side boundary of the leafy neighbourhood off the Glenorchy-Queenstown Road. He asked Queenstown's council to rezone the land from rural to urban and extend Queenstown's urban growth boundary, as part of the district plan review. But nine people spoke up against the proposal yesterday, when it came before the planning and strategy committee. And all six councillors on the committee agreed with them, rejecting the proposal.

Sunshine Bay homeowner Andrew Murray highlighted the ecological impact of the planned development. "I moved to Queenstown in 2007 and one of the defining reason to make the decision to move to Sunshine Bay was the abundance of native birds and wildlife," Murray said. "It is very unique in that respect, even compared to upper Sunshine Bay, it's a very different ecosystem there, and it's probably the only stand of any substance of native bush in the whole Queenstown region I'm aware of. " Tuis, bellbirds, kaka, wood pigeons and other birds all visit the area he said. Murray pointed to the ecological report, which concludes "urban development at Sunshine Bay will result in the permanent loss of a sizeable area of indigenous broadleaved forest." Much of the land was protected as 'outstanding natural landscape' until that classification was removed last September when an appeal over stage one of the district plan was settled, removing a barrier to urban development.

Indicative masterplan Planning consultant Blair Devlin spoke at the committee meeting on behalf of Xin's company Sunshine Bay Ltd. He said reports had been completed by traffic, geotechnical, ecological, landscape, planners and infrastructure experts. "Together these reports have confirmed there are no significant barriers to redevelopment of the site," he said. Devlin said the "proposal would add a meaningful contribution to the housing supply consistent with the new national policy", as well as a 5% contribution to Queenstown's housing trust. The indicative masterplan envisages some terrace-style housing, similar to Pounamu Apartments or Alpine Village, both on Frankton Road. But councillors were unanimous in their rejection of the rezoning bid, and the council staff's recommendation it be progressed. Wanaka councillor Quentin Smith said the council had done a lot of work to protect areas of the district which aren't classed as ONL. "... it doesn't follow that because it's not ONL it should be developed. The report seems to make that assumption."

He drew other councillors' attention to the fact that birdsong was one of the key considerations of the council's Vision 2050 plan. "If we're to be honest to that vision we can't compromise on the loss of significant habitat which has been identified in the reports of being present on the site," Smith said. Deputy Mayor Calum MacLeod questioned whether progressing the rezoning could lead to urban creep, with the next area of land along Glenorchy-Queenstown Road seen as "the next cab off the rank".

Local architects among NZ's best in 2020 Two Queenstown architecture firms have been shortlisted for the prestigious 2020 New Zealand Architecture Awards. Team Green Architects, established by Sian Taylor and Mark Read in 2013, was given the nod in the 'Housing' category for the Oliver's Ridge project in Dalefield, Queenstown. Anna-Marie Chin Architects is shortlisted in the 'Housing - Alterations and Additions' category for its Lake Hayes Cottage project. Ruby Ridge House and Wanaka Crib, both in Wanaka, are also finalists in the housing category, designed by Condon Scott Architects and Pac Studio respectively. And Assembly Architects' Abodo Showcase Cardrona is a finalist in the 'Small Project Architecture' category. They are among 45 projects from Whangarei to Wanaka shortlisted in the country’s leading architecture awards programme The winners will be announced on 4 November.

The shortlisted buildings in the peer-reviewed programme run by Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) range from an opera house, a bowling club and an airport terminal to an ecosanctuary, an astronomy centre and a chapel. The awards jury, led by Auckland architect Michael Thomson and including fellow architects Lynda Simmons, Fiona Short and Anthony Hoete, will also visit universities, a new secondary school, a cultural centre, a fale, a warehouse and a cricket pavilion. Twenty-two residential projects are on the shortlist, and jury convenor Michael Thomson said it was particularly pleasing that five of them are in the multi-unit category.

Councillor Val Miller said there "are so many areas within the Wakatipu Basin that are far more suitable for development that to change that zoning to me would seem ridiculous", whether ONL or not.

"There has been a shortage of good-quality multi-unit housing in New Zealand, and it’s good to see this type of building getting the attention it needs from architects and their clients.”

And councillor Niamh Shaw said from all the information she'd seen "there are no outstanding benefits, specifically in terms of affordable housing and the accessibility of the site is obviously problematic as well". "While I'm happy to support responsible and appropriate development I do not see that this is such an example."

"As you’d expect, there are multiple shortlisted projects from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, but the jury will also be going to see buildings in Whangarei, Gisborne, Tauranga, Hastings, Whanganui, Nelson, Tekapō and Queenstown. "Some of these buildings are by younger architects, and it’s great to see new practices taking their place alongside established firms in the New Zealand Architecture Awards programme."

She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

Then this quick 3 minute read will help you make the right choice. The easiest way to explain this is with a recent example, my friends daughter had a decision to make, should she stay at the private school in Lisbon or come back to the state school in the Algarve? Her parents had paid for the education yet she felt she could learn as much from being in her old school, she was in a dilemma. I listened as she weighed up the pros and cons, she’d written down her list and still not sure what to do. She talked in circles for around an hour, becoming more and more confused. I pulled out of my pocket a coin (I had popped it there to use for this purpose). “OK, let’s toss for it, heads you stay in Lisbon and tales you come back to the Algarve! Best of 3, here we go, are you ready?” Now, firstly, she was a little shocked, everyone is familiar with the toss of a coin, yet the way I was about to use this is not to rely on the toss of the coin but to see what it is that she really wants, deep in her heart. I tossed the coin and it landed heads up. I tossed it again and did not let her see the coin, tales I said, OK so down to the last one. Just before I tossed it, I said “What are you hoping it is this time?” “Heads” she said, not missing a beat, I tossed the coin and exclaimed, ”Heads it is, you know all along what it is that you wanted, you just didn’t know that you knew.” She told me that she could feel her reactions with the coin, heads she was excited, tales she was disappointed. We always know what is best for us, if we can just get out of the way of ourselves, this little exercise does just that. I call it the Truth Test and it works every time, try it, toss the coin to help others, make sure you have both outcomes, then ask what they want it to be next. For yourself, just let the coin do what it does and ask yourself, how do I feel, is this right? You will find your truth, trust me.

The quiet life I expected with our borders closed just is not happening. Huge numbers of our friends from all over New Zealand, plus the very many foreigners with houses here who have spent their first winter downunder, are making things a lot of fun. Add to that the normal Wakatipu love of partying, and it’s making for a very full calendar. Dorothy Browns’ 19th birthday party last Friday was absolutely brilliant and the whole cinema and den had been turned into a bar and dance hall. The dancing was to silent disco - you all wear headphones and choose one of three playlists to dance to - you can see from the colour of the glowing light if someone’s on the same list as you and you can dance and sing together. Watching it is as much fun as doing it- you can’t hear the music - just the shouting and often offkey singing. Poor Dorothy having to choose only a hundred of her closest friends to attend - everyone wanted to be there. They’ve been showing the singalong version of “The Sound of Music” to packed houses and I’m desperate to go to it. I’m very excited to go to Auckland as someone naughty up there is doing wonderful things to their road signs. “Merging Lanes” has been turned into “Emerging Planets”, and I’ve heard a delicious rumour that someone very creative has been designing their own important road signs. I haven’t seen any, but one that read “WARNING - FUTURE AHEAD” was near Arthur’s Point and some annoying council official (or with luck, some clever art collector) has taken it down. Everyone is worried about wilding pines, but this terrible plague of wilding signs is much more worrying. I’m delighted about the deliberately ridiculous ones, but the council’s aren’t even funny - just ridiculous and ugly. I did love the sign I saw among the election billboards in Te Anau - poor Jesus looks quite manic - perhaps he’s a bit cross about the large Auckland cluster praising him and spreading the virus. He’s not alone with that feeling. That didn’t come out quite right. I would be terribly surprised if anyone was spreading the virus with their praise of me. Fiordland was brilliant - a brand new magazine called “Scout” is launching in November and I’ve been commissioned to do some travel stories. In case you are thinking that this column is so badly written, how could anyone want to commission me for anything?I am not paid for this CBD nonsense, and you get what you pay for, as they say. My brother Ferg owns LWB and when COVID happened, he kindly said I could keep my job, but lose my tiny paypacket. Luckily, the “Scout” management are not related to me and I will try and give them something wonderful in exchange for some lovely $$$. Four girlfriends came with me, and we spent 36 hours boating, biking, hiking, kayaking, cackling like mad birds (possibly we are), and eating till we nearly burst. Huge thanks to Fiordland Discovery, Fiordland Jet, Trips and Tramps, Wild Rides and Rosco’s Kayaks for putting together an incredible itinerary and recommending such excellent places to eat and stay, and far more activities than we could fit in. We are all going back as soon as we can. It’s hard to fit in all the reading I want to do at the moment, with so much going on, but in my usual organised way, I realised I had gone to two booklaunches for the same book - Jillian Rothwell found an old suitcase full of letters and diaries written by her Jewish family when the Nazis were making life so horrible for everyone in Vienna. So many tiny, essential coincidences meant they ended up in New Zealand in places like Tuatapere and Foxton. It’s an extraordinary story and if anyone needs reminding of how lucky we are here, this book will do the job perfectly. It’s on sale at the Lakes District Museum and I believe there are some signed copies available. And I’m happy and shocked to congratulate my parents on their 61st wedding anniversary. They were careless enough to have five children who have caused them nothing but angst, and none of us have any idea how they and their marriage have managed to survive so long. In case anyone’s wondering, there is a respectable 11 months between their wedding and my birth.

Eating healthy at Habebes popular choice and it’s a filling and healthy lunch, especially when paired with a choice of salads for just a few dollars extra.

From its inception Habebes has been a firm local lunch favorite with workers on the go. Habebes means ‘much loved’ in Arabic and after three decades (and then some) in business, it’s certainly true. This Middle Eastern influenced café has been a Queenstown staple since 1986. Original owner Katrina Khalil opened the café using some of her family’s favourite Lebanese recipes. Many of them are still used today – the chocolate addiction slice, vegan lentil pies and big, hearty kebab wraps are still staples in the diets of many Queenstowners. However, Habebes has been influenced by nearly everyone who has ever worked there broadening out the menu, with Arepas from Colombia, now regularly appearing on a Thursday, one of the latest examples. “However, you can’t change the options too much, or people get irate!” jokes Amanda Mulqueen, who’s owned the café since 2010 (after working at Habebes since 1999). Habebes offers a large selection of fresh mixed salads, from sesame grated carrot to tabbouleh, all made from scratch each morning, along with pies and soups.

The café was one of the first to offer vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options alongside more traditional kebabs. It was also an early leader in rewarding customers who use BYO containers and continues its push into sustainability. One of the things that has changed is the clientele; “We used to get mostly women in the 1990s, back then male ‘Tradies’ were only interested in pie and chips, but we get a lot now – guys are becoming more health-conscious and are realising that healthy doesn’t have to mean tasteless. Locals have always been, and still are, our main customers,” says Amanda. “We’ve seen a lot of trends come and go, but we’ve stuck to what we do. It’s always been about eating natural real food – raw vegies, food prepared with no-fuss or chemistry involved. It’s healthier (and tastier) to eat fresh, whole foods.”

“Some of the salads are seasonal – in summer, we ditch the pumpkin and serve up lots of summer greens – I just don’t see any reason to eat out of season, it’s not nice and it’s expensive.”

Arts+Culture Calling all poets - poetry slam regional series kicks off this month

What’s On

A local poetry group is calling for poets and writers to use their words to represent our region on the national stage. Poets from Otago and the Southern Lakes are invited to come slam it with the best for the chance to represent their region at the NZ Poetry Slam national finals in Christchurch. Poetic Justice Wanaka are delighted to be running this series – three heats and a final – for the Across the Bridge festival 2020. Heats will be held in Queenstown, Cromwell and Wanaka, with the final at the festival in Bannockburn. Entry is free, and all are welcome to come perform and to watch. Slam has a particular format that is replicated all over the world. Poems must be less than three minutes long and no costumes and props are allowed; the poems are judged by five audience representatives chosen by the MC. Poets need to bring along three poems for the heats, which will be run in knock-out rounds. They perform one poem per round, so part of the game is working out whether to use their best poem straight up or save it in the hope of progressing.

The finalists from Cromwell, Wanaka and Queenstown will then be invited to compete for the regional title at the final on October 7 at Coronation Hall in Bannockburn. Event co-organiser Laura Williamson said it’s a great time for both the poets and the audience, calling it a “bar game as much as a poetry event”. “There’s no one style or one way to win, and we’ve loved sending our regional reps to the finals in the past, who have performed everything from high-country ballads, so spoken word pieces about busted ACLs, to love poems. It’s about your voice.” Slam poetry is one of the fastest growing art forms in the world. In New Zealand, the National Poetry Slam has been going since 2011. Signups are at 6.30pm, with the action beginning at 7pm. Get there on time to sign up as places will be limited. Bring your friends and family with you to cheer you on. Past regional winners have included Queenstown’s Dale Grant Stephens and Wanaka’s Paul Martin and they have done our community proud, Laura said. Liz Breslin won the Wanaka heat in 2014, and came in second runner-up nationwide. “Yes, it’s a competition,” Liz said, “but they’ve got this saying that the points aren’t the point, the poems are the point. People are there with a shared purpose, for a good time.” The Across the Bridge festival is a festival of the arts running in Bannockburn from October 6 to October 11, 2020.
