One hundred and fifty-one million bucks for an upgrade!! One hundred and fifty-one million bucks. Did I read that right? $151 million? Queenstown’s council is considering spending $7.55m a year for the next 20 years to upgrade Queenstown Events Centre. Hopefully some of that will be offset by Central Government shovel-ready funding and the initial commitment would be $69m over 10 years, but jeez, that is a lot of money for an upgrade, isn’t it? Wanaka won’t miss out either. The new Wanaka Recreation Centre is inline for $72m of upgrades over the next two decades. It’s a little unclear from the initial council report what the $151 million will pay for overall. Does it include the cost of relocating the Frankton Golf Course, ie. building another course down on the Shotover Delta? Does it include the proposed Emergency Precinct? More detail will be provided when the plans go out to public consultation. But the report says in the first three years, there’ll be new artificial turf pitches, wastewater heat recovery system, new indoor multi-use courts, squash courts, indoor cricket pitches, three new sports field developments, public roads and carparking, new health and wellbeing facility, clubrooms, new outdoor netball and tennis courts, and maintenance yard works. Presumably, the swimming pool extension, which will hopefully correct the mistake of building a 25-metre lap pool rather than a competition / training-sized 50m, will follow soon after.

You can bet much of the debate during the public consultation will be around whether there are enough car parks, but shouldn’t the main focus be on the costs and whether we’re getting value for money. Are we paying too much for projects, too much to consultants, to specialists and to builders? When did everything get so expensive and can we actually afford this? The original Queenstown Events Centre, with the John Davies Oval, opened in 1997 and can’t have cost much more than $5 million, at a guess. The Alpine Aqualand extension in 2008 cost $18 million. Ok, so last year it cost an extra $2.6 million to repair the ceiling and install one that wouldn’t drop down on swimmers’ heads, and the cricket oval needed a $640,000 turf upgrade in 2017, but generally the total seems value for money for what they provides the community. I understand the need to think big when Central Government is loosening the purse strings. I also welcome the $85m Jacinda cash splash on the bypass and downtown, the $90m for roading projects on Ladies Mile and around Frankton announced in January, too. But it just seems Covid-19 has made us immune to the value of money. You could blame the international banks bailout post GFC too. Every day, there’s another announcement about tens of millions of dollars of taxpayer and / or ratepayer money. Maybe a million bucks just isn’t what it used to be, but it does seem there are no strings on the purse anymore. There’s not even a purse, just a credit card we’re prepared to max out forever. Page 7 Random community testing for Covid-19 returns as visitor to Queenstown returns positive test Random community testing for Covid-19 returns to Queenstown this week - more than 10 weeks since the last active case in the Southern District. The Ministry of Health announced on Sunday there will be a popup testing centre at Pak’nSave in Frankton on Tuesday, August 4, from 9am.

It follows the positive test of a 22-year-old man on arrival in South Korea on July 22, who had visited Queenstown from July 1-4. “We are especially asking Queenstown locals to come forward, and in particular those who are working in public-facing roles and may have had symptoms during July,” a statement from the Ministry says.

“However, people don’t need to have experienced symptoms to be tested in the pop-up centre and they won’t need to selfisolate while they await the result of the test.” The man visited Queenstown Holiday Park, Fergburger, Four Square, AJ Hackett’s Kawarau Bridge Bungy Zip Line, Hikari Teppanyaki restaurant, Strike Bowl – Swiss-Belresort, Farelli Italian Restaurant, Ferg Gelato, Skyline, and went on a Jucy Tours bus to Milford Sound for a cruise. Southern District Health Board (SDHB) will open the centre, assisted by Council staff and contractors, and the store’s management. Queenstown Lakes District mayor Jim Boult has welcomed the Ministry’s decision saying it is a responsible precautionary measure. “We can all be proud of the actions we have taken to date, but the recent case of the person travelling to South Korea is an important reminder that we must remain vigilant. In that sense, the temporary testing centre is a good insurance policy and we are very happy to support our health officials with this latest initiative,” Boult said. “There are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand outside managed isolation facilities but one only has to look at the situation across the Tasman to realise how quickly the virus can spread if allowed to do so.” “I would encourage as many people as possible to get a test so the Ministry can build a broad picture across the whole community. In particular, I would ask employers to give their staff the opportunity to visit during working hours if they so wish.” The temporary testing facility will be very similar to the one established in the same location in April this year, which was the first drive-through ‘sentinel’ testing in New Zealand. Testing at Queenstown Medical Centre has been ongoing over the weekend, with people responding to the call to be tested if they have developed symptoms since 1 July. However, numbers tested have been lower than expected. Southern DHB medical officer of health Dr Susan Jack says the case reinforces the need for people to keep track of their movements. It has now been 93 days since the last case of Covid-19 reported from an unknown source in New Zealand. There are now 25 active cases, all in quarantine.

Southland National candidate named At a meeting in Alexandra Friday night, National party delegates from Southland branches voted Joseph Mooney in as their candidate for the upcoming general election. Joseph Mooney, a Queenstown based lawyer, was voted in as the candidate to represent National at this year’s General Election at a closed-door meeting at the Cellar Door in Alexandra. Present and former MPs were in attendance to accept Joseph as candidate to contest Southland. He will attempt to fill the boots of Hamish Walker, who resigned earlier in the month following his leaking of confidential COVID-19 patient information.

Christchurch Airport [CIAL] ‘starts conversation’ with Tarras community More than a hundred Tarras residents and supporters crammed into the Tarras Community Hall on Wednesday evening (July 29) to hear from the man leading Christchurch International Airport’s (CIAL) plans to develop an international airport in the area. “It’s certainly the biggest thing that Tarras has ever confronted, and let’s hope we do it in a civil way and let the facts speak for themselves,” long term resident Robbie Gibson told the meeting, which was organised by a working party of Maori Point Road residents and chaired by retired Environment Court judge Shonagh Kenderdine. CIAL project manager Michael Singleton responded to questions from the floor and listened to representatives from a range of Tarras interest groups.

He fielded accusations that the airport should have had a conversation with the Tarras community before purchasing $45M of farm land; that property owners now faced years of uncertainty about what would happen with their land; that an airport would destroy biodiversity in the area as well as the community’s way of life; and that CIAL had acted without consulting stakeholders. Michael’s statement that the airport had “a no surprises policy” was met with laughter, before he clarified that policy applied to the CIAL’s shareholders. Michael apologised to the Central Otago District Council (mayor Tim Cadogan was present) for the council not hearing about the airport’s plans until last week. “We’ve made some commitments to be very, very open with them,” he added. However Michael was unapologetic about the undercover way CIAL had purchased land, saying “it was not nefarious”. He said CIAL was “here to start a conversation”, and that if the project did not stack up, the airport would be left with 750ha of farmland in the Tarras region. “When we say long term… we’re thinking 50 years,” Michael said. “We don’t want to get things in the wrong place or lose the licence to operate. This is part of a long term strategy around the aviation future of the South Island.” In answer to a question about timelines, he indicated that within 12 months the CIAL would hope to have identified “some packages of work, and some ideas of layout”. “When you do big infrastructure projects sometimes those closest to it don’t always share the benefits, and feel they carry the burden,” he said. Residents let him know how opposed they were to a potential airport. Peter Jolly quoted from the Australian movie The Castle: “If you think this is going to be a walk in the park, it ain’t.” Maori Point Road resident Dr Marilyn Duxson said: “I don’t think there’s anything, Michael, that you could say that would make me accept that this is the right thing to do for our valley.” Michael indicated that consultation would continue, and would include landowners, local communities, national and regional bodies, and iwi.

Homicide rate spiked in 2018

Queenstown buses will remain free until mid-September when a new prepay travel smart card is introduced.

New Zealand’s homicide rate - which includes murder, manslaughter and infanticide - is on the rise again after years of decline.

Gone w ill be the inconvenient GoCard, replaced by tag-on tag-off Bee Card, which can be topped up online.

Police today released the official homicide victim stats for 2007-2017, and the provisional figures for 2018. Homicide statistics are not released monthly like other official police statistics because investigations typically take many months and data on homicides can take up to two years to stabilise. The 2007-17 report details the homicide of 737 people over that 11-year period across New Zealand - including 519 murders. From 2007 to 2011, there were an average of 74 homicides per year (50 murders on average), but this dropped to an average of 61 per year over the six years from 2012-17 (45). The lowest annual figure of 50 homicides was in 2017 (35 murders), while there were 58 in 2016 (50 murders). However, the provisional stats for 2018, show there were 73 homicides that year - comprises 54 murders and 19 manslaughters. That’s the second highest number of murders in a single year over the combined 12-year period and the third highest for total number of homicides. The highest was in 2009, when there were 68 murders and 26 manslaughters, for a total of 94. “The report gives insights that are important and of public interest,” says Detective Superintendent Tom Fitzgerald, National Manager: Criminal Investigations.

“However, we must not lose sight of the fact that every one of these numbers represents a person whose life has ended prematurely at the hands of another, in often tragic and horrific circumstances.”

The cards are free but when you order one online you’ll need to top it up with a minimum of $5.

The stats do not provide a regional breakdown, but according to the policedata.nz stats, there were two ‘homicide or related offences’ in Otago in 2018.

ORC Manager Transport Garry Maloney said that Bee Cards can be registered online to access a range of additional benefits.

Over the 11-year period, 62 percent of homicide victims were male and 38 percent were female.

“Registering your Bee Card online will help you get the most benefit from the new system. It will mean you’re able to top up online, set an auto top-up, load child concessions, view your travel history, and more.” Customers can transfer existing balances from a GoCard to a new Bee Card.

Those of European descent appear most frequently in the homicide data, but Maori account for approximately a third of all victims, despite making up only one seventh of New Zealand’s population. “The data also enables us to link victims to the offender with respect to the type of relationship they had,” Fitzgerald says.

“GoCard holders will be able to transfer their leftover balance to a new Bee Card up until the end of October, but they should aim to get it done before we go live.”

“Women continue to be over-represented in victimisation of those killed by partners or ex-partners – about 75 percent were female and 25 percent were male.

The transition to the Bee Card will bring a range of benefits to the public transport network across Otago.

“Family harm is a serious issue that affects people of all walks of life, with victims of all ages from infants through to the elderly.

“The Bee Card is a simple tag on tag off system that makes it easier for passengers to get on and off the bus, ideal during peak bus usage,” Maloney said. “As well as benefits to customers, it will give us useful information about when, where and how people are travelling, which will help us improve the network according to how passengers are using it.” GoCards could only be topped up in person, where they were sold.

“Disturbingly, children under the age of five made up 12 percent of homicide victims, and around one in five were under 18. “These victims include the most vulnerable members of society, who too often are killed by those whose job it is to keep them safe.” They also do not include road fatalities. Growing Vegetables from Seeds Spring is around the corner. Cue smiling emojis and fairy dust everywhere!!! It is time for us gardeners to get excited!! Once spring hits time seems to fly and many jobs clamour for your attention. Some August’s arrive with spring like conditions and we even start grabbing a few seedlings from the garden centre and chucking them in. Any plantings from late autumn that are under frost cloth or in tunnel/ glass houses will start growing again as the daylight hours get longer and the temperatures rise. Growing plants from seeds is so satisfying and costs very little, compared to buying a punnet of veggies. There are so many exciting heritage seeds available out there from seed companies like Kings, and Mr Fothergills. Heritage seeds are old varieties that generally have better flavour, nutrition and are better disease resistance. Then there are the seed saving warriors like Koanga and up and coming Setha seeds who really are trying to preserve New Zealand’s heritage seeds saved by generations of gardeners.

Be aware, just because you buy a pack of seeds and grow them does not guarantee success. Many of the varieties struggle to grow in our unusual climate because seeds are a product of the environment they were grown in. We aren’t the east coast or the wet North Island, so when seeds grown in very different regions, climatic environments and different soils are planted here, we often get disappointing results. Start saving your own seed. Have a quick look on the internet and you will find seed saving 101 for whichever seeds you want to save. Remember don’t save seeds from hybrids. This is where the seed has two different parents and the seed saved will often revert to one of the parents but not grow true to the original seed bought.

3 easy plants to save seed from 1. Tomatoes. Tapping the plant through its growing season will encourage better pollination and a sturdier stem. Tomatoes don’t easily cross with other neighbouring varieties of tomatoes. Save 2 or 3 good looking specimens that are blemish free. Select the tomato from mid plant and mid truss and allow to fully ripen on the truss. Pop the pulp in a jar of water and allow to sit for a week. Place in a sieve and clean off, then pop on a paper towel for a week to fully dry. Place the seeds in an envelope and label very clearly including the variety, the year collected and the original seed source. 2. Lettuce is another easy plant to save seeds from. If you have 10 lettuce, you’re not going to save seed from the first 3 that go or ‘bolt’ to seed at the first sign of unseasonably hot or cold weather. When saving seed, we’re trying to save future traits from our plants. We don’t want to save a bolting trait into future generations of our seed. Allow 3 good looking, tasty, non-bolting, awesome sized lettuces to go to seed. You will know when it’s time to collect the seed when you see a dry fluffy stem covered in thousands of seeds. Pop in an envelope and label clearly as per tomatoes [above]. 3. Beans and Peas, these grow true to type. Allow the bean or pea to mature and dry out on the vine. Look to save from the middle of the vine rather than the bottom or the top. Collect a few from different vines to allow for some genetic diversity.

There are local seed saving groups you can join. ‘Southern Seed Exchange’ is Christchurch based and ‘Southland Seed Savers’ is out of Riverton. These are cheap to join and a great way to access quality saved seeds. Remember though you will need to adapt seed over 3 years to get quality locally adapted seeds for our environment. Check out Facebook NZ Seed Savers and NZ Seed Swop. They both have seed bank members who are growing and sharing within their FB community. When buying seed, purchase open pollinated and ideally organically grown seeds. Organically grown seeds will have more resilience to pests and diseases as the plants are less pampered and the seeds are more adept at fighting off pest and disease. You can improve these key elements with regularly composted and mineralised soils. Remember your seed is only as good as the medium you grow it in. Often the Pauper, Prince King analogy is used. The pauper potting mix to grow your seedlings in has very few nutrients and good drainage. The Prince potting mix that you pop your young seedling into, once it has 2 to 4 leaves. This mix can be as simple as a potting mix blended with a quality compost, supplying the young plant much needed nutrients and biological interactions. The Kingly soil is where your plant does most of its growing. A few side dressings of compost through its life cycle, mulching, rock minerals, lime etc. Happy gardening!

RE - JUST DOING MY JOB Dear Finz, You did indeed try to rip them off -- although in this case it seems unwittingly because you don’t know your job! Rule #1: If you have a trip with multiple drop-offs, you do not stop the meter until you reach the final destination. Rule #2: From pick-up to destination you must choose the shortest route - this applies also to ‘accumulated shortest distance’ for multiple drop-offs. The shortest route usually means you drop-off the closest address first and the furthest place last; this is where your meter gets stopped and you return to base. You cannot drive to the most distanced destination and then charge for your return back, because

you still have passengers. (to illustrate, imagine your customer would’ve lived at Gibbston - or even Cromwell - instead of Lower Shotover, would you have driven to Cromwell first and then charge for your way back to Kawarau Falls !?) In other words, you should have gone to Kawarau Falls first, then carry-on to Lower Shotover. The side trip to Kawerau Falls would’ve added around $15 - to the fare: End result at Lower Shotover would be a fare of approximately $68. Then there’s something even more disturbing in your letter: If your meter showed a $53 - fare from town to Lower Shotover, how comes the trip from there to Kawerau

He was loudly slagging of over-developed Queenstown and the people who were letting the airport expand to allow for more International movements... When I pointed out to him that he should live his Green credentials by riding his pushbike to Christchurch to catch a flight to wherever his international destination was. I further suggested that the last time I looked on the Internet at Mt Everest there were heaps of rubbish and dead bodies lying around, for which he and his mates were in part responsible for, but have done little if anything to address. I think the worst thing about the Airport debate is that it been hijacked by a bunch on NIMBYS and Wanaka Whoosers who want all the benefits and convenience that tourism and its related facilities bring , but don’t want to share any of the inconveniences, however minor. Last week at the Winehouse with cosy fires roaring and absolutely delicious food was the Three Lakes Cultural Trust’s evening to make some wonderful announcements -there is a very promising chance of a cultural facility in Frankton where our local artists and cultural groups of all persuasions can do their arty things and over 100 of them have applied to be part of RENEWAL - a project which will happen at the Events Centre on October 8 and 9 here, and in Wanaka the following week. The trust has raised over $100,000 to reward the artists and $80,000 to stage the event. Hugest congratulations to the three Lakes team and to all the generous locals who have supported this initiative. If you want to donate to them, look at the Three Lakes Cultural Trust website for the DONATE page - this is such a terrific chance to ramp up the creative juices of our community - it won’t be just the artists who benefit from it, but every single one of us. It was exciting to hear Max Rashbrooke speaking as well - he was describing different ways of making democracy work better. Instead of just every few years hearing politicians say what they’re going to do, and then voting for them so that they can spend the next few years doing none of those things and a whole lot you certainly didn’t want, there are countries around the world using software that lets citizens be a bigger part of decision making processes on a more regular basis. I have never heard of any of the candidates (or even some of the parties) standing for our electorate, which now seems to be called Southland, and National still hasn’t even got a candidate. I’m going to try and listen to all of them if, and when they hit the campaign trail. David Seymour spoke this week and had some good ideas but the very male audience whose main concern was their right to own whatever guns they want rather put me off. I notice that in my column last week, the question “Can only men be PM?” had the “only” added by the editorial team - the whole point of that comment by the 10 year old boy was that he had not lived long enough to have known that sometimes men are Prime Minister - Helen Clark had been in power his whole life. And as we all know, women are MUCH better at everything. Oh, all right - sometimes men are great too, but they definitely aren’t very good at listening. It’s a wonder women are so good at listening, as we seem to be very good at talking! I love the buzz of a whole group of women excited about everything. The VERY aptly named Buzz Stop in Hansen Road, Frankton was the venue for a group of us this week and we would have outdone any amount of buzzing the resident honey bees could have made. If you haven’t been there already, go and have a look - they have a great cafe (check out the fab tables owner Nick has made out of old doors) and a flower shop and you can watch bees doing what they are so good at. In summer, they are going to have musicians playing in the lovely garden and the Ride to the Sky will be happening. It’s E bike tours up to the top of Grant Peak - all private land with amazing views most of us will never have seen. There’s also a brilliant interiors/gift shop on site and I had no idea all of this was happening. That’s what I love about the Wakatipu - you think you know it well, but always some clever local has dreamt up another way of making our loveliness even lovelier.

Queenstown Lakes' burger champs 2020 have been crowned - with three winners basking in the burger glory Chefs from 30 of the district's restaurants and bars put forward their best creations for judging in the annual Battle of the Burgers, which ran from June 26 to July 25. A dedicated panel of judges smashed their way through all 30 burgers, while the public also voted for their favourite. The Judges Award this year was a tie - with Ballarat's The B B Kang and Albert Town chicken joint Henrietta's Flying Pig Burger both scoring equally with the judges' combined scores. They share the award. The Hayes' Kiwi Lamb Burger took the People's Choice Award. Organiser Chris Smith, of Smiths Craft Beer House, says: "I think the judges nailed it. "Henrietta's was one of the best chicken burgers I've ever had and Ballarat was without a doubt one of the best burgers I've ever had - just a classic bacon cheese burger with that cheese sauce on the side, which was the difference for a lot of people. Outstanding.

"The Hayes was a take on the classic Kiwi burger but better. The idea of taking beetroot and mixing it in with the lamb mince gave it a real freshness, and it had a sustainability-side to it. "It was all f**king awesome." All three winners will likely be serving up their winners at Burgers, Beers, Beats n Bungy at the AJ Hackett Kawarau Bridge Bungy Centre on August 15, accompanied by craft beers and DJs. Smith says there were probably twice as many entries as previous years, likely as a result of bars and restaurants looking for promotion opportunities post-Covid. "I don't think any of us knew what was about to happen, so for the price of entry, the marketing would have been worth it."

How to get what you want in life rather than worry about what you don’t want in one easy step. Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland Recently I spoke at the Chamber of Commerce, about how to ‘Lead out of a Crisis’, one of the mindsets I spoke about was focusing on what you want, rather than worrying about what you don’t want. It sounds easy right? Yet, the fact is that we have around 64,800 thoughts a day and it is estimated that on average 80% of those are negative. This means that most of the time we are focusing on what we don’t want, this has a huge impact on the reality that shows up in our life. Please know this is not about faking it till you make it, or just thinking positively, this is a simple tool that communicates with your brain to allow it to focus on what you want your future to be like.

Imagine what that smells like, and what it might taste like if a little of that lemony cloud just happens to touch your tongue. Look at the cut lemon halves and notice how some of the segments have been broken open. One of the segments is still absolutely full of rich lemon juice. And now, I’d like you to cut off a slice of that lemon. A mouth-sized slice, the kind you might pop in a cool drink. Look at that slice closely, noticing all the little sacks and segments bursting with juice just waiting to be released. And imagine you’re going to pop that slice of lemon into your mouth, biting down and releasing all that juice over your tongue. Now I’d like you to take a moment to check around the inside of your mouth with your tongue. You’ll almost certainly notice that there’s extra saliva. I know that even sitting here writing this article, my own mouth is watering in response to the image created in my mind. But why should that be? We know there’s no lemon.

The truth is that now more than ever people are experiencing anxiety, clients we are working with right now have never had this before, it’s been Covid induced anxiety and it’s getting worse. If anyone has anxiety they are actually focusing on the future and seeing it go wrong, anxiety is an emotion of the future. When a person runs anxiety they created a movie, they see if through their own eyes and hear a soundtrack, plus an internal dialogue (which is generally there own voice) and this then drives the feeling of anxiety, you see what is interesting is the brain doesn’t know what is imagined or what is real, it always feels real on the body. Let me give you an example of this, just play along with me. I’m fortunate enough to spend 3 or 4 months of every year in beautiful Portugal. As you’d expect, we get plenty of wonderful sunny days, and I like to take my road bike out early in the mornings and cycle through the lovely countryside before the temperature climbs too high. This often takes me through the lemon groves, where at the right time of year, the aroma from all those lemons ripening on the trees is just amazing. And in this exercise, we’re going to be imagining one of those lemons. So, wherever you happen to be, I want you to imagine that you’ve got a perfect lemon right there in front of you. Picture it there, the perfect colour, the perfect shape. You know that it’s the perfect lemon. Enjoy knowing that this is your perfect lemon, with its perfectly formed skin, plump with juice and reminiscent of the sun-soaked groves it grew in. Imagine taking a knife, and cleanly cutting that perfect lemon in half, recognising that distinctive swishing sound of the knife slicing through the stiff peel and the soft, juice filled centre of the fruit. The lemon fragrance and the juices are instantly released to float up into the air in a cloud of lemon aroma. You can almost see all those tiny particles of lemon juice and lemon oil as they fill the air.

You imagined what it looked like; you imagined what it smelled like; you imagined what it tasted like. The interesting thing is that to your body, that lemon was real. To your body, that lemon slice was about to come into your mouth, and your mouth prepared for it with extra saliva just as it would have for the real thing. There are two things to take from this exercise. One is the realisation that your thoughts, be they good, bad or neutral, really do have a direct impact on your body. The second is that your neurlogy can’t tell the difference between a real experience and a vividly imagined one – they react to both just the same. So our mind can have unwitting power over our automatic functions, simply because of what and how we think. So it’s time to take control. In fact this is pretty much what makes one person different from another. We’re all fundamentally the same, aren’t we? Human beings, made to the same basic design. The only real difference is the way we think, create a movie of what you do want, see it, hear it, what will your internal dialogue be? Then you will feel it, your future how you want it to be. This is powerful and very empowering.
