Rehome your Pets As a British migrant with a six-year-old daughter who sings God Defend New Zealand from the backseat on the way to school, I feel I should make the case for keeping as many of us in Queenstown as possible. Because the message seems to have changed in recent weeks, from “we’ve got your back” to “rehome your pets before your repatriation flight”. Now, I should explain I have permanent residency, thank God. I’m pretty sure I won’t have to swap Jacinda for Boris and can instead focus on learning te reo and then citizenship. I’m talking about migrants at other stages of the complicated visa process. The maths seems simple. The boffins at Infometrics - in their ‘God I wish we hadn’t asked’ report to Queenstown’s council - reckon we’ll lose 7,900 jobs by March 2021. Unemployment could be 18% and the economy could shrink by 23.3%, or $633 million. Queenstown’s wonderful Covid welfare response has already helped 7,500 people, the majority migrants. So, Queenstown is buggered = go home. But it’s not that simple. Many will want to go home, of course, but for others Queenstown is home, they just don’t have the paperwork to match. I firmly believe visa re-applications should be evaluated from a long-term and humane perspective. Migrants should also be able to access job seekers’ benefit short term, if needed. There were calls for this, but the PM indicated any help will only be in the form of emergency assistance, and now the calls have gone quiet. We all know there were massive staff shortages before Covid. Kiwis from elsewhere in New Zealand weren’t in a rush to move to Queenstown to pay maximum rents for minimum wages. What happens when the dust settles from Covid and the trans-Tasman bubble inflates? Will there be a sudden influx of New Zealanders wanting to work in tourism, hospo and hotels? Queenstown businesses could find themselves unable to efficiently scale up to meet demand again due to a lack of staff, especially if the bubble is extended or a vaccine is found. There’s also a good proportion of those currently on short-term visas who’ll go on to become residents and build their own businesses and create employment, as so many others have done.

I look around and see invaluable contributions to social, economic and civic life from established migrants in Queenstown, from Trent Yeo to Margaret O’Hanlon, Mark Williams, Fabiola Correa, Niamh Shaw, Jamie Whitmarsh, Amit Sethi, Sally Whitewoods, and hundreds of others all the way back to William Rees. Some of them might have had to leave under similar circumstances. All these nationalities in one place, all this beautiful diversity, also makes Queenstown one of the most interesting big little towns in the world, all these cultures coming together attracted by Kiwi values, humour, lifestyle, energy and, in many cases, just attracted to Kiwis. News Round Up A summary of major local news stories by Paul Taylor A bleak week for job seekers and migrants Early modelling by economists at data analytics company Infometrics and commissioned by QLDC suggests almost 8000 jobs could be lost in Queenstown Lakes District due to Covid-19, with tourism, economic activity and employment anticipated to feel the greatest impact. It suggests international tourists could return gradually from 2021 but may take years to reach pre-Covid levels. The district’s economic output (Gross Domestic Product) over the next year is shown to potentially drop by around 23%, with a 25.3% drop in employment between March 2020 and 2021, for a total loss of 7900 jobs. Mayor Jim Boult, in a statement, said while the report paints a bleak picture, the analysis is based on a “do nothing” scenario and we are already making big steps as a district to improve our future. “While Infometrics project a very difficult time ahead, we will meet these challenges head on as a community. “We will continue to support those who need it during this tough time but we are already well underway working with Government, businesses and the community to support initiatives which bring jobs back and steer us towards and help to shape our new normal. “These need to align with our community vision for 2050 and beyond. Boult says QLDC is more hopeful than the research on the return of domestic and international tourism. “The projections show that the timing of a trans-Tasman bubble, or the extent to which Kiwis travel down here, could make the difference of nearly 1,000 jobs. Council is also waiting on a final decision regarding the funding applications to the Crown Infrastructure Partners for our shovel-ready projects. If successful, QLDC estimates they will support in more than 1,600 jobs over the next few years and boost the economy. The report also outlines that without intervention, low-skilled workers are likely to be the most affected by job losses especially in the accommodation and food service industries, as well as food trade workers, cleaners and laundry workers. As part of the response to these issues, QLDC has established community hubs to support ways for the community to connect with welfare support and find information about gaining new employment or diversifying their skill set. Migrants, however attending the first of the booked-out received bleak messages on their future in New Zealand. Representatives of Immigration New Zealand (INZ), along with independent immigration advisors, detailed how the impact of Covid-19 on the labour market will affect their ability to find new jobs and meet visa conditions. Travel agents detailed the scarce options for getting home, while the local Salvation Army lieutenant talked through welfare, social and counselling support options. Immigration NZ told the people attending the first session, that the impact of Covid-19 has been “felt very strongly particularly by our migrant community but not only by our migrant community”. “There has been a significant change in New Zealand’s labour market as a result of Covid-19.” Employers wanting to employ a migrant on an essential skills visa, rather than working holiday visa, will need to undergo a labour market test, demonstrating there are no New Zealanders who can do the job. “I just want to be clear the situation is very different to what it was a while ago, the labour market will tighten up, for migrant workers in New Zealand.” INZ said the Government is working through options for those who have jobs, but have reduced hours or salaries. Independent immigration advisor Katy Marston-Key also pointed out that Queenstown’s exemption list, which removed the labour market test for many employers due to staff shortages pre-Covid, no longer applies. “If you’re looking for a level four or five visa, it’s going to be really hard given the unemployment of New Zealanders,” she said. Travel agent Tori Keating explained the options for getting home are limited, and it was essential to register with their embassies, INZ, and travel agents. “Even if you’re not planning on going home now, things may change for you here, or things may change at home with your family as well, so it’s important to know what repatriation flights are available to you as they become available,” Keating said. “It’s also incredibly important that you plan ahead and be ready to travel. “If you’re thinking about going home, make sure that you have a plan to get everything in order. You will need to get your documents in order, and what you’re going to do with possessions you’re not taking with you and arrange the disconnection of power, gas, phone, if you’re renting a house. Queenstown Salvation Army Lieutenant Andrew Wilson said Welfare support is still available through Queenstown Lakes District Council in terms of food vouchers, food parcels, winter clothing or bedding, and financial support towards accommodation and utilities. Support is also available through Salvation Army and Happiness House. Citizens Advice Bureau can also help with employment and tenancy issues. “If you’re struggling with the feeling of being overwhelmed both now and in the future you can call or free text 1737 to talk to trained counsellor,” Wilson said.

Queenstowners Hit The Trails During Covid-19 Lockdown
Queenstown awoke to snow on the mountains last week, with the ski season now three weeks away.
Queenstown’s trails experienced a surge in users during lockdown, with Queenstown Trails Trust reporting more than 160,000 walkers and cyclists on its network during Alert Level 4 – and some trail sections up 250% on regular usage. Queenstown Trails Trust CEO Mark ‘Willy’ Williams says it was hugely rewarding to see people out in their ‘bubbles’ enjoying the area’s network of cycling and walking trails during what was a difficult time for many. “We’re delighted that our trails provided the ‘essential service’ of fresh air and exercise, contributing to the health and wellbeing of Queenstowners during lockdown. And we’ve seen a huge number of new users discovering our incredible trail network for the first time.” Particularly popular were the Twin Rivers trail with 64,746 users (up 165%), the Kelvin Peninsula trail with 10,628 users (up 39%) and the Jack’s Point trail with 4,061 users (120%).
Both Coronet Peak and The Remarkables had a decent dusting of the white stuff as a weather front moved through. Coronet, which had between 10 to 20cm, will open Friday, June 26 about two weeks later than a regular season. The Remarkables will open for the school holidays from Saturday, July 4 to 19, then on weekends until September 27, with potential for extra days to be added during the season. But the long-term forecast for June, always something of a guesstimate, indicates skiers and snowboarders might not be missing powder days due to the season’s late start. MetService meteorologist Mmathapelo Makgabutlane says “Next week is also fairly dry, however we do expect northwesterly winds to start coming through for the South Island, so the western side of the Southern Alps, they could see a little bit of moisture coming through, the eastern side, probably not too much. “And it’s a very similar story for the last week of June as well.” NZSki’s Coronet boss Nigel Kerr says the ski field is designed to “skip past that small problem, that minor irritation”. It has 211 fixed snow guns, and 7 portable for extensive coverage top to bottom across the ski field’s 280 hectares. The guns need cold temperatures to fire, though. “Dry isn’t really our issue,” Kerr says. “The forecast is that June and July are going to be a little bit colder than normal, which is music to my ears. “It’s looking really good up there now. We got 10 to 20cm overnight so the snow guns are firing, you can probably see that from town. It’ll warm up overnight and then we’ll be back into it with more snow on the ground from about 6am tomorrow morning. “So it’s looking awesome. We’ll just build up the snow, build it up over the month, so it’s great to have a base down. Then we get the staff up for training, looking good.”
Local Karen Hanson says the trails provided a welcome respite for her and her young family during lockdown. “The trails offered us this incredible opportunity to get out into nature and enjoy epic alpine scenery, while still following the Alert Level 4 rules and staying close to home. We realised just how lucky we are to have this ever increasing network of trails here and we’re delighted to be getting on board as a first time supporter of the Trust.” Mr Williams says the Trust has repositioned its annual appeal, underway now, to reflect the pandemic. “We know that people are doing it tough, but we also know people want to support the development of new tracks and trails. So we’re offering families the opportunity to become a friend of the Queenstown Trails Trust for just $5 this year.”
Central Lakes Trust step up funding for schools. Central Lakes Trust stepped into the fund gap in the regions school income to the tune of $235,000. Schools often rely on community funding to supplement the costs of extracurricular activities. In the absence of this funding over the past few months, due to COVID-19, a one-off Central Lakes Trust initiative has been created. “We have put together a package to ensure extracurricular activities can continue to be funded through schools. says Trust Chief Executive, Susan Finlay. The funding initiative aims to assist in the recovery and wellbeing of the young in our region. “Supporting the schools to deliver some form of normal, assists in not only building their resilience but has a positive impact on families within our wider community.” $235,000 is being granted to the schools within the Central Lakes region. Each of the 27 schools will receive an allocation of funding, based on their roll. Mat Begg, Grants Manager for the Trust says, “We have had positive feedback already; some already know where their funds will go.”

Watermain burst in CBD on Thursday Sections of Shotover Street and Camp Street in downtown Queenstown were closed Wednesday evening and into Thursday after a major water leak.

Queenstown fire brigade spent a couple of hours on the clean up, as business owners attempted to protect their premises from the deluge. The water, however, entered several shops. A council spokesperson, said on Thursday. “We have not been able to identify a direct cause for the failure as yet. Our Operations and Maintenance contractor, Veolia Water, worked through the night to restore the service as promptly as possible. “The reinstatement works on Shotover Street and Camp Street are currently being completed Thursday The works included asphalting the road to reseal areas excavated for repairs.

What a pleasure the long weekend waslots of local kiwi’s in town and very few international visitors. As someone who works in retail it was fantastic to see and also how charming and nice everyone was. I really appreciated the kiwis who took the time to come and spend the long weekend enjoying themselves. There were people from all over the country and most taking the time to say that they came because we were in pain and they wanted to help in some way. Yes we need the border opened, especially to Australia but boy it was nice to see so many friendly kiwis.
Parking is a topic I have discussed with staff at some length over the past few weeks. One of the key roles in parking charges is to help keep carparks turning over to enable more people to access them. The proven problem with free downtown parking is they fill quickly with business owners and staff, and the actual available parks for shoppers is reduced. Making it easy to park rather than making it free to park is the approach we’ve adopted. With fewer people working in town we consider that there are an ample range of parking
options for visitors, and in the evening the two large off street carparks at Ballarat and Boundary Streets are free to cope with diners and those enjoying the CBD offering. Parking charges also encourage the use of public transport, and off course the Orbus continues to run free. This is a great time to reinforce the public transport message and encourage mode shift at no cost rather than allowing all that good work to slide back towards car based travel into the town centre.

The lack of interest in visiting in the CBD by Queenstown residents must be attributed directly at the foot of successive councils, including the one you Scott Stevens were a part off, who allowed the major CBD property owners to turn the area into a tourist ghetto. That has been quite obvious with the extended CBD zoning which has resulted in getting rid of any remaining residents in the area to allow the big end of town to further expand their footprint
and riches. The primary object of the rezoning was to allow the council to flog off the Lakeview site so that could horse trade their way into a new office complex, smack bang in the middle of Stanley Street which is one of the busiest streets in the CBD, This, of course, was the result of a complicit council, who did not seem to care too much at the time about the consequences…. Well written Scott - council has used a stick mentality to try & drive vehicle usage down - all it has done is emptied the cbd of locals - when they introduced time restrictions on parking past 6pm in the cbd that would have made life even more difficult for our local restaurants - I’d suggest have central cbd parking sitting at 30 mins from 9am to 6pm & unlimited after that, & then having the big council parks like by the library & Stanley Street as free 24/7 for up to 2 hrs. This will encourage cbd workers to use public transport &
free up parking for visitors & shoppers & diners & will help revitalise the cbd. Public transport should be free & can be done so by adding an amount to our rates - spread across all the ratepayers it will not have to be a huge sum to make it work - & will have a positive community impact. After all our rates cover Forsyth Barr stadium, the events centre & libraries amongst others all of these facilities add to the well-being of the community as a whole.

How to chose to be happy in simple easy to do steps Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland Happiness is all we want in life, it’s the main thing that our clients tell us they want to feel, to be happy and healthy. The great news is that happiness is not something that just happens to you, it is a choice, even better, you can take simple steps to bring happiness into your life. Having more money is not one of them, so at a time when life is a little uncertain it is good to know that you can create happiness for you and those you love. When we feel happy we are really feeling the ‘happiness’ hormones flooding our neurology, there are four of them, today we will look at the first two. It is important to know that without these hormones being present then the opposite happens, we can feel anxious, depressed, stressed and not sleep. Here’s how to create the release of each of them into your system, a little like taking a pain killer if you have a headache, you choose to get rid of it, so you take action. Treat this as the same thing, if you want to feel happy then take action. The first one is Dopamine creates motivation, helps you to learn, gives you pleasure. It gives you a feeling of determination to take action towards your goals.

Check out @drcompost on Facebook or benelms.com You’d be mistaken for thinking this is the time of year when we forget our veggie gardens while heading to the slopes or hibernating till the sun comes back. Only 12 weeks till spring, only a gardener would yell such blasphemous words in a ski town. Yet this is some of my most productive times of year. The more we do now the more productive our spring gardening will be.

I don’t want to be maintaining pathways in the spring and cutting back Berry bushes. I’m just not going to have the time to be pulling weeds out and I don’t want to!! There’s a few things we can be getting on with that’s perfect for this time of year.
So here’s the to do or not to do list for the coming weeks
1. Plant that Garlic. Now is the time, do it this week. Put a handful of quality compost or vermicast in each hole and then one on top for luck with every clove. Size matters, small cloves small bulbs, big cloves equals bigger bulbs. Mulch the bed well with some straw. This will insulate the ground allowing the garlic to get even more growth over the winter months. It will also avoid weeds, soil compaction and your valuable nutrients being flushed away. 2. Give all those crops your harvesting with the ‘cut and grow’ again method (rocket, broccoli, spinach, silverbeet etc) some love with a handful or 2 of compost around them. 3. Berry bushes can be planted now as most are in a dormant state. The love you give them now will pay dividends for years to come. For raspberries: dig a trench and backfill it with manure/compost and then add soil on top, planting the raspberries at 30 cm intervals. Add more manure and mulch on top keeping it away from your plants. You can get Raspberry plants for free off friends as they grow and spread like weeds. Consider using some reclaimed roofing iron to create a root barrier either side to stop them spreading far and wide. The same ideas can be applied to Loganberry, Boysenberry and other berry bushes. Cut to the ground second year canes of established berry bushes. Manure and mulch already established berries too. 4. Apply manure and mulch to veggie gardens. Don’t hit spring with weedy beds. If they’re weedy already, cover them in cardboard, put some compost on top and straw mulch ready for spring. This is a great way to get your soil fertile especially the first few years. Be wary though manure and straw mulch can bring in weed seeds... 5. Fruit tree pruning. Young fruit trees are pruned in winter to encourage growth and shape. Choose a sunny day, the sun solarises your pruning cuts. Older established fruit trees are pruned either in spring or after fruit drop. (Peaches and apricots can be pruned at various times in the growing season ideally not winter though to avoid disease). 6. Pathways. It’s the groundhog day part of the article. But there’s nothing worse than the groundhog day of weeding pathways!!! Woodchips, old carpet, pavers... What are you going to do to stop the headache? 7. Applying compost and mulch in autumn and early winter. There is no better time. 8. Tidy up your compost heap. Give it a turn into the next bay or lift your plastic Dallic off and turn it back into it. This is an opportunity to observe how your compost is going. What are your moisture levels like? Does it need more carbon or nitrogen? 9. New to composting. Dig a hole in your veggie patch or anywhere with access to bare soil. Chuck in your food scraps and cover with 20 to 30 cm of soil. If you like this method, pre dig a trench and start filling from one end covering up the food scraps as you put them in day to day. 10. When was the last time you applied rock minerals and lime to your veggie garden. Gardeners mine the soil of minerals, we need to replace them to grow healthy nutriticous food. 11. It doesn’t have to cost a lot with free resources everywhere. There’s horse manure that owners want taken away, there’s piles of leaves blowing away, free wooden pallets to use for your new compost bays that businesses want taken away (ask first). Cabbage tree leaves, flax flower stalks, wild lupins... don’t forget all that peeing you do!!! Capture it and use it in your gardens. Store in sealed containers. Dilute 5 to 1.

Wasn’t it terrific seeing so many people in town this weekend? - crowds of New Zealanders loving our beautiful Wakatipu. A huge thanks to LUMIFY and all those locals who had the brilliant (in every sense of the word) idea of lighting up their houses and businesses. I had thought it was just people putting up their Christmas lights, but there were some really creative ones Assembly Architects had done fabulous projections on their Arrow Lane office and it looked spectacular. Less thrilling was the ROAD CLOSED sign in the main street on Sunday night - with town so busy, it was sad that, yet again, a burst waterpipe had meant the road had to be dug up. And only a day or two later, the same thing happened in downtown Queenstown with a great river running down the Mall. If anything should prove to council that there should be less hiring of all these consultants writing reports, and more doing the actual work, this would be it. There are so many urgent working parts of our community like water, waste and general council efficiency that need immediate attention, rather than dreaming up expensive, pointless changes. And on the subject of expensive and pointless, Jeff Williams asked me to ask if anyone knows the purpose of those flimsy red and white shiny sticks that are appearing faster than wilding pines along the sides of our normally scenic local roads. It looks suspiciously like another clever business persuading the powers that be that we are all too stupid to work out where the road is and should uglify our country with these bits of nonsense. If anyone knows the answer, or can tell us how much they cost to buy and install, and how much it costs for a man to go and weedspray around them (truly!) do please let me know, so I can sit and fume about the nanny state. There’s way too much nannying going on - good on NZSki.com for giving pensioners cheap ski passes - after all that nonsense telling people over 70 not to go out anywhere over lockdown (I know of rebellious OAPs who donned denim jackets and sunglasses to sneak into the supermarket) - much better for them to go and do something properly dangerous and fabulous fun like skiing. Despite the best efforts of our utterly useless tourism minister (bravo to Tracy Roxburgh for her excellent “Dear Kelvin” letter), it looks as if New Zealanders and Australians are all champing at the bit to get down here and enjoy the Wakatipu. With AirNZ having done such an excellent job of infuriating their customers by not giving refunds, they could maybe make amends by creating new interregional flights - imagine how handy if we could fly direct to New Plymouth or Napier or Nelson or other places not beginning with N, and for them to fly here? Even if it was only for a while - it would be such a boost to regional tourism. Who knows? Maybe a future focused on domestic tourism will work better for all of us? And on that very subject, take note that the Lakes District Museum has a very exciting sounding art exhibition to raise funds for their earthquake strengthening programme (they didn’t get the shovelready approval so do please support - starts on June 12th)

If you are in a face to face customer service/sales role before lockdown, have you thought about doing phone sales or customer service via a phone helpdesk. There may be chances to re-train or up-skill via the assistance that the government and the local council are looking to help out with, i.e short courses to do things such as traffic control, construction foundation based training courses such as Site Safe, Construct Safe, etc so you can work on building sites. Look at completing other short courses around driving endorsements, these are all useful skills that might bump you up a few places in a list of people looking for work. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the town that we all currently call home, jobs will be hard to come by in all sectors. Some people may have to relocate to another region for a period of time, such as Dunedin, which has opportunities coming up in construction due to the new hospital build and other key projects. Bigger centers such as Auckland and Wellington will have more opportunities available. For business owners have you thought about what other skills your team have and how you might be able to subcontract them into other roles for fixed-term contracts, or a certain project so they stay connected to you but they are doing other work for the short term. Then when your business starts to get back online you can take them back!
