Water abundance but not abundant to use While December and last week presented Queenstown with some heavy rain fall events including high lake levels and flooding in parts of the district, the summer finally arrived in January and with that the first water restriction. Questions have been raised: why restrict water usage when there seems to be plenty of it? This is how the water supply scheme works: Measured in 2015 the average water use per household in the district was around 1,150 litre per day which is significantly higher than other councils benchmarked in Aotearoa New Zealand at 688 litres/household/day. To provide this water to the households, water is pumped from lakes or bore supplies, treated and piped into reservoirs on a hill or other elevated site. From there the water is distributed via gravity through pipes to us users. So far so good, but why can’t we use as much water as we like? The reason is that water supply schemes are designed for a calculated demand for each household, commercial and industrial site. Pumps, pipes and reservoirs are built to service that calculated demand. If the demand exceeds the supply that is when water shortage occurs. This can happen for example because of a pump failure, a major leak, someone is filling a pool or many people irrigating their garden at the same time…. Why restrict water use and not increase the supply scheme? The reason is at peak times some of our supply schemes are operating at their maximum capacity. Increasing the capacity would mean upgrading reservoirs, pipes and pump stations. This would have to be funded by the ratepayer which raises the question of affordability, necessity and environmental responsibility. Now how can we conserve water? Conserving water starts with using water wisely. This can mean at the time of high demand, mainly throughout the summer months, irrigate with a hand-held device, use a timer and irrigate at night between midnight and 6.00am, use dishwashers and washing machines only when having a full load, thinking about shower habits (could five minutes be enough?), fixing leaks on your private supply, reporting leaks if you see water is pouring out of the ground on roads or other public places…. All opportunities to care for our water supply. Another question that arises is: how do I even know how much water I use? An answer to that is water metering. This shows users exactly how much water they consume and how well their water consumption management works. On a final note, water is one of the life-giving elements on this planet. Water is precious. Caring for our water sources and how we make use of it, is caring for life which, I feel is a privilege. GIG Review

Rating: That was a waste of time. I talked during the performance.

Who: Elton John Where: Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin When: Tuesday 4th February Reviewer: Ch’i Bangs “I will miss you very, very much,” Elton John told the audience. But not as much we will miss Elton. Elton John began saying goodbye to New Zealand on a wet, (very wet) Tuesday night in Dunedin. It was his first NZ concert as part of a three-year Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour. The show lasted over twoand-a-half hours and didn’t cover nearly all the hits, such is the incredible talent of the man. Elton is now 71 and has been visiting New Zealand on tour since 1972, many in the audience had been to many shows, but for some (like me) this was the first and he had me on my feet from the very first chord. The crowd was mixed – everyone from 20 through to 80+ was there and everyone knew most of the words and were on their feet throughout much of the concert. Many had the flashing glasses and had dressed for the occasion. He doesn’t have the energy to run around the stage or jump on the piano anymore, but the costumes, all three of them, spoke of the flamboyance that Elton was known for. Perhaps ‘I’m still Standing’ said it all with all the images of his incredible journey appearing on the screen. Elton also spent time on key issues for him, reminding everyone in trouble to ask for help, a call that was met with rapturous approval from the crowd and of course his incredible work with AIDs. The first song was ‘Bennie and the Jets’ and the hits kept coming and perhaps my favourite of the night

It was mmmk. Totally worth it. Must See! was ‘Rocket Man’. He included the crowd in “la, la, la, la, la, laaa” in ‘Crocodile Rock’ and there was instant buy-in. Most of the favourites were there (minus anything from Lion King) and there were plenty of the songs written with special poignancy and most with Bernie Taupin, ‘Funeral for a Friend’, ‘Daniel’ with amazing imagery of a farewell to a soldier lost in battle and of course ‘Candle in the Wind’, in its tribute to Marilyn Monroe, rather than its sister version to Diana, Princess of Wales. There was some material that wasn’t as well-known, but clearly was sending a message; including ‘Indian Sunset’, a song about Indian genocide. The special relationship with Harry, (Princess Diana’s son) was evident on the screen. There were so many themes and stories. Time just flew, but no show was going to be truly over until ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ released us from our seats and with our sadness emerge back into the pouring rain and the gridlock to head home with a show that will certainly stay with me for years. The staging, screens, effects and technology deserve a whole piece on their own. Wow. As were the band members – all have been with Elton for years and the music they produced was incredible. Once the tour is over he will continue writing but his travelling days are ending as his family needs him and he needs his family. Fair enough, Elton, and thank you for memories.

Art News Star of Spartacus Movie Dies Hollywood movie star Kirk Douglas has died, aged 103. The man who claimed he’d “made a career playing sons of bitches,” starred in classic Hollywood films such as Spartacus, Paths of Glory and Lust For Life. His son, actor Michael Douglas, announced the news on Instagram last week, stating that his father was “a legend, an actor from the golden age who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in set a standard for all of us to aspire to.”

“I started out singing at the Gold Guitars, but stepped away from singing my own music before moving to Queenstown as it wasn’t really encouraged back then. So, I’d sing covers. Queenstown had such a nice music scene – I’d play a set, then head to another venue to listen to a friend. It was thriving.” She’s visited the region on multiple occasions since moving overseas more than a decade ago. She returned to song writing and honed her craft in Sydney, then moved to the USA (“the music and arts scene in Sydney has changed a lot too – it’s unaffordable now, so many of us moved to the USA,” she adds). In America, Jackie lived and worked in Austin, Texas – the ‘live music capital’, and LA before moving to Nashville in 2017. The three cities are renowned for their music scenes – particularly the Americana genre that has inspired much of Jackie’s song writing. “All have thriving music scenes and that has impacted my music quite a lot. I’ve noticed the changes through my different albums. I think you get affected by what you hear around you, absorbing the influences without realising.” She adds that though she’s “really Americana”, her sound can be as freeroaming as she is: folk, roots, traditional RnB and Country music influences can be heard throughout Jackie’s four albums. A fifth album is currently in the works and will include a single (due to be released 14th February) that’s got a Queenstown connection: “I wrote it for fun. My Mum is an artist and I was introduced to Lonely Dog artist Ivan Clarke through a friend [Ivan’s gallery is in central Queenstown]. It inspired the song; [sings] cats and dogs and bitches howlin’ at the moon… “In Germany, my promoter wanted a bluesy and upbeat song for the festivals and I played that tune and it went down really well. So back in Nashville, we recorded it and added the Memphis Horns.” Collaborating with and incorporating other musicians into her music is something Jackie loves about the music scene in the USA, “you to work with world-class players (like Eric, drummer for Billy Idol). Nashville is a music hub and there’s so many amazing players – too many to choose from!” For her 5th March gig at Sherwood (554 Frankton Road), she’ll be joined by another brilliant singer – her sister Katrina, who lives in Wanaka. Jackie will play a mix of songs from her old albums and forthcoming one, at a chilled session in the Workshop space. Tickets and further information available via jackiebristow.com and Eventfinda.com.

Wondering how to safely dispose of batteries? Our first tip…never put them in your rubbish or recycling wheelie bin! Batteries can be damaged during the collection process which can cause them to combust. This is particularly the case for Lithium ion batteries such as those in cell phones, laptops, power tools, e-bike batteries and other rechargeable items. You can tell if it’s a lithium ion battery because it’s normally marked Li-ion. Many types of batteries can be dropped off for recycling at the Wakatipu Recycling Centre and Wastebusters. For more details on how to responsibly dispose of your used batteries, head to www.qldc.govt.nz/hazardous-waste

Warning, this whinge will only be of interest to parents

As a new mum I’ve realised there is a serious lack of access to parent rooms and changing facilities in the region. To my knowledge there are no parent rooms in the area except for Remarkables Park shopping centre, which leaves me feeling like someone on the planning committee has had a brain explosion. I mean surely in this day and age that would be a logical, if not mandatory inclusion in new developments like Queenstown Central shopping centre? Looking around during the working week I can see the majority of shoppers are parents with their kids in tow. Instead since having a baby I’ve found myself awkwardly breastfeeding in the Kmart carpark. I’m also a pro at changing nappies in the boot of my car on the main street of Arrowtown. Queenstown Central shopping

centre has one nappy change table in a handicap bathroom, but nowhere to feed, heat up food or a safe place to take a breath when your baby is upset and I’m yet to locate a change table in 5 Mile?! And Queenstown, I mean I struggle to locate a public toilet that I can use for myself, let alone somewhere that I would take my baby (I think we’re all happy to see back of the O’Connells toilets!). Having recently been to Melbourne I was overwhelmed at the number of easily accessible parent rooms that mums and dads could access in the city. Any other parents feeling this way? Shout out to Remarkables Park who had the good sense to put in a parents room, much appreciated! Flustered mum.

RE: Neighbours at bnb war We feel your frustration. We are constantly dealing with noise late into the night from “guests” as we are surrounded by over 30 pop up motels in our neighbourhood! 95% of these holiday home owners don’t live in our town and are not interested in dealing with any problems arising from their guests (we’ve tried) adding weight to the argument they’re in it for the huge money they’re making. And just to finish on, over half of these holiday

homes have not registered with QLDC to run as a short term rental accommodation and have no intentions to do so as they don’t wish to pay the extra that would be added to their rates. About time all these holiday homes got looked into properly by the local authorities. Hotels and motels can’t operate without regulations, why are holiday homes with no compliance allowed?

As an Air B&Bs Super Host I think there is a simpler better solution. Airbnb does not want to be known for parties and last year offered three different types of party monitors to hosts (free to super hosts) to install in their property so that hosts can monitor their properties at a distance. I would ask these hosts to install one ASAP as surely they want to protect their property from party damage. I presume these hosts are registered with the QLDC? I have an on site Air B&Bs and

live beside three others. They have all been in existence for several years. I have never experienced this party issue (only ocasional oos and ahs when guests come onto the balcony of the house above). All my neighbouring Air B&Bs and I provide onsite parking as is required when we register with the QLDC and no parties and no parking problems have occur around me.

Check on the QLDC website to see if they are being charged for extra rates that they should be paying. If not notify the council they will react eventually. Keep calling noise control. The council will take action if they get called regularly. Write to the owner they have the power to give their tenants bad reviews. If there is an agent keep telling the agents.

Write to Air B&B every time it happens. Will they be paying the extra tax they should pay for running a business? Keep lobbying the council to put some caps on Air B&B as they have in other cities around the world. Start building something at 7am in the mornings!

We stand united.

Lucky you.

Facebook / Website comments RE: Editorial no. 735 This is so important and I completely agree. Hate Speech has no place in NZ, neither in 2020. I’m Kiwi born and raised in the North and I’ve been so disgusted at the racist posts and blatant whinging. If they don’t like tourists and they don’t want their cash then they should move. Love thy tourist. A stern remark at Remarks I sincerely doubt the access road to Remarks would have been sealed were it not in the best interest of the parties involved. If a tenant does whole lot of work to your property can they then claim the costs back from the landlord? Surely this the same? Many locals will recall having paid a road toll at the construction of the road and to our minds it is paid for, then and ongoing every winter with eyewateringly expensive coffees. YEAH NAH. I feel this year, a seasons pass to Cardies might be the go. Or a few road trips to Ohau.

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN

CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

I hope you’ve all got more romantic plans for Valentine’s Day than I have - my darling rushes out the door every Friday morning to play breakfast golf and VD is no exception. Usually I spend it wandering lonely as a cloud, but this year I’ve got an appointment with the dental hygienist so at least one person will be gazing at me intently, if not lovingly. According to my lovely Chinese friend, Carina, the divorce rate in Wuhan is going to fall dramatically. All these couples who are now shut up in their tiny apartments are finding that sex is one of the few activities available, so they’ve all been very busy at it. AND thehusbands are so bored being shut in all day, that they are even being helpful round the house. Sounds to me like a fairly drastic and unlikely way to improve a marriage... The lack of Chinese package tours is definitely causing shockwaves around town but there are some upsides - I decided to book dinner at the Skyline restaurant since it’s so impossible to get a reservation normally. I’m not a great fan of smorgasbords but the one up there really is excellent and it’s such a terrific place to take visitors. To my annoyance, it was totally booked out - seems as if lots of canny locals have realised as well. Now’s the perfect time to go and do all the brilliant tourist trips that are on offer here - I often think I might book into a hotel in Queenstown and pretend to be a tourist for a week as it would be so much easier to relax if I wasn’t seeing all the million jobs that need doing around home. As well as coronavirus, the other disaster was the storm that’s closed the Milford track for 3 weeks and the Routeburn for the whole season. Did you see that photo of the container wrapped around the tree near Mataura (below)? It was getting nerve wracking hearing about all the roads closing one after the other so quickly and wondering how much worse it could possibly get. Luckily, unlike the virus, the rain stopped and there are ways of fixing the damage. My trees are positively singing with joy at the massive shower they got, and I’ve got another week or so of avoiding watering anything.

Wasn’t it lovely having an incident free Waitangi Day? So nice to think of it as a happy holiday and not just a nonstop series of sniping and snarking by politicians and protestors. I loved the concert in the Memorial Hall - the pipe band coming inside was deafening and thrilling and the Arrowtown School Kapa Haka group gave a terrific performance. I was sorry we had to leave early as all the different nationalities that make up this vibrant, generous community put on marvellous shows as well.

Opinion - Policing the Roads by Peter McKay

Driving in this town is a shocker. No one can dispute that. And yes, I too have seen drivers texting and talking into cell phones whilst driving, completely oblivious of traffic around them. I personally was almost run over at the pedestrian crossing outside the old post office about three years ago as I was halfway across and a young driver came at me whilst staring down into a cell phone. I was lucky to escape with my life. I have seen drivers going the wrong way; I have seen drivers blasting up and down side roads and on Fernhill Road, ignoring the 50kph limit to the point where Michael Schumacher would be shocked. I have witnessed this town deteriorate, in all sorts of ways – the friendliness, for example, is wearing thin. More and more hotels get built, more and more cars are on the road, more and more angry horns get blasted, fists waving out of car windows, people jaywalking against red lights whilst staring down into the everpresent cell phones. Finding a car park takes more patience and skill than climbing an erupting volcano. Round and round you go -- damn it, missed again! -- biting your lips, seething, boiling, hoping to Saint Whoever that you’ll encounter a free car park before the moon rises over the Remarkables.

However, and it’s a big however, no matter how ‘obvious’ these people are who jeopardize our safety on the roads, no matter how dangerous, the police cannot be everywhere. They don’t march around town wearing tall hats and carrying truncheons. “Evening, all.” They don’t all wear uniforms. Many are undercover and do some great work without trumpets and fanfares. In fact, just a few days ago I watched what I thought was an ordinary driver in an unmarked car overtake me and slow the car in front of me down to a halt. A young girl was driving and talking with a cell phone wedged in her neck. She must know it’s illegal. There’s no excuse. Everyone knows that sort of behaviour endangers other people. But there will always be those who think they are above the law. They’ll chance their arm no matter how many police officers there are. Of all the jobs and professions, being a police officer is the one I would consider last. Why? Because the job involves constant, grinding, relentless stress.

The public come to you with their nightmares – dreadful and painful scenarios that would keep the devil awake at night. Every day, on and on it goes: I’ve just been assaulted; that driver cut me off; this person stole my wallet; he stole goods from my store; that man looks suspicious; I’ve just seen a car go through a red light; somebody punched my son on the way to school; she looked at me the wrong way; I’ve lost my purse, etc. The public don’t approach the police to offer flowers or appreciation or gratitude. No. The public bring their various and manifold nightmares to the police and, if you are in the least bit sensitive, you’ll soak it all in. It will affect you in the long term. Give the police a break, man. Like I said, they can’t be ‘right there’ as a crime is happening. They can only do what they can do within the constraints they have and the manpower available at any given time.

How to use the language of flowers

in your Valentine’s day bouquet

Flowers are ubiquitous on Valentine’s day, but few people realize that the various blooms in their bouquets are imbued with symbolic meaning. This year, consider using the language of flowers to let your sweetheart know you care.

ROSES A classic choice for Valentine’s Day, roses can express different things depending on their colour. • Red symbolizes a deep, passionate love, which is why they’re ideal for a romantic partner. • Pink roses symbolize appreciation and make for a milder gesture than red ones. They’re a nice choice if you don’t want to overwhelm a new love interest. • White roses stand for purity and innocence, making them a great choice for a friend, daughter or other relative.

TULIPS Beautiful but understated, tulips are a wonderful alternative to roses and also hold various meanings depending on their colour. In particular, red tulips are a symbol of passion and love. And because they last longer than other cut flowers, tulips also represent the longevity of your relationship.

LILIES These flowers, specifically the white ones, are associated with royalty and will express to your loved one that they’re a king or queen in your eyes.

These are just a few of the many flowers that you can include in your Valentine’s Day bouquet. If you’re still not sure what blooms to choose, your local florist will be happy to help.

Valentine’s Day wasn’t always such a day about love. Valentines Day, currently a cuddly, kissy and commercialized day but if you unwrap the 21-century packaging and dig deeper into it's past, you'll find that Phwooah! It has a dark past. No one has pinpointed the exact origin of the festival, but a good place to start is ancient Rome. Roman Romantics celebrated the feast of Lupercalia from February 13 to 15. This is a time where men hit on women, by hitting them. They'd slaughter and skin an animal then whipped the women with the bloody hides. Ladies willingly lined up for this gruesome spanking. They believed this would make them fertile. The festival included a match making lottery. Couples were drawn out of the jar and would spend the majority of the festival together, if not longer - if all went well. Ancient Romans also tied Valentine’s day to Emperor Claudius II executions of two men, both who were named Valentine. This was held on the 14 of Feb, but in different years of the 3rd century A.D. The Catholic Church honoured their martyrdom by calling for the celebration of St Valentine.

Roll forward a few centuries… Late in the 5th century Pope Gelasius I meddled with the day by combining the feast of Lupercalia with the execution Valentine. He wanted the day to be less raucous, to cover up the wife whipping and animal skinning rituals, and for Christians to focus on celebrating fertility and love. Shakespeare created the romantic version we know today Shakespeare the grand wordsmith came along and romantized the day in his works. Shakespeare mentions Saint Valentine's Day in A Midsummer Night's Dream and in Hamlet, where he alludes to the superstition that if two single people meet on the morning of Saint Valentine's Day they will likely get married. February 14th is the day because in the fourteenth-century Europe believed that on February 14, birds begin to mate. It gained popularity through Britain, then Europe. People made paper cards especially on the day. This little running tradition got amplified in the 19th century, thanks to the Industrial Revolution. 1913, Hallmark Cards of Kansas City, Mo., began mass producing valentines. February has not been the same since.

No Friend But the Mountains Behrouz Boochani

Naomi Klein

(325.210 BOO – QTN, ALEX, WKA, FTN)

This autobiographical book follows the real life experiences of Kurdish-Iranian journalist, Behrouz Boochani. From his escape from Iran into further dangers, the reader is immersed in Boochani’s harrowing journey over land and water – encapsulated by the violence, torture, and injustice he faced on Manus Island; one of Australia’s infamous detention centres. Written on a mobile phone, over the years he spent confined on Manus Island, Boochani gives the reader a raw, personal account of the reality of offshore processing; one which has often been neglected by the political gaze. Boochani’s account is brutally honest, heart-breaking, and confronting. It tells of the darkest inhumanity through a lens of outstanding courage and fortitude. While it may not be suited to the faint of heart, everyone should read it and learn from it.

Naomi Klein’s latest book is a very timely collection of long form essays; written between 2009 and 2019. In these essays she puts forth the argument that a New Green Deal is necessary to save our planet from certain environmental catastrophe within the next decade. This Green Deal would impose specific drastic solutions to climate change; and would bring about major changes in the way the world economy operates - thereby delivering a fairer, more just society for all. A visionary book in search of a stable path forward into the future!

The Convert

‘Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant’ is Joel Golby’s first book - for now. It is a humorous and irreverent collection of theories, essays and over-exaggerations. Joel first became known to the world through his writing for Vice and The Guardian which has bought him a wide and devoted following. Witty and intriguing, there are a few things you should know about Joel Golby; he likes cats, is very tall, is always up for a game of Monopoly and will absolutely cheat. Oh, and his parents are dead. In this book he writes about these things and other important stuff - all with copious doses of dark humour and honesty. Who is this book for? It’s for those that are confused and really bad at living modern life and just want to have a big laugh about it.

Ananda Devi (F DEV - QTN)

This is the story of two unlikely, connected people living in London. Mary is alone at 75 years of age; poor, empty and unable to work as a sculptor due to her bad arthritis. Mary has had a loveless life since her partner went away to fight in the war and never came back. Then she meets Cub, a British-Jamaican 13 year old boy who comes to Mary’s house to do odd jobs for her. Like Mary, Cub is also impoverished and lonely; and comes to see Mary as a way to a better life - an escape from his chaotic home. In turn, Mary becomes obsessed with Cub who ends up moving into Mary’s home – and into her bed. The story deals with sexual abuse, ageing and racism in a shocking, confronting and captivating way. Mary’s macabre relationship with Cub comes to a horrific end as white supremacy, class conflict and poverty take over on the streets of London. Not for the faint hearted, Devi weaves a believable and brutal depiction of London and the lives of those who live within the city. .

Joss Whelon (GNOV BUF)

WELCOME BACK TO THE HELLMOUTH in this modern, Buffy resurgence! Jordie Ballaire, Dan Mora, Raul Angulo and original creator, Joss Wheldon, have teamed up to produce this new Buffy the Vampire Slayer graphic novel. High school can be trouble – what with new friends, homework, parties… and your inescapable destiny to rid the world of vampires. Join Buffy, Willow, Xander and some new characters in this masterfully crafted adventure series. You’ll love every twist and turn as the Scooby Gang reunite to take on a new era of Big Bads.

Stefan Hertmans (F HER – QTN)

Stefan Hertmans is an internationally acclaimed Flemish author. He was a professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Ghent for many years. Based on manuscripts found in the Cairo Genizah; a synagogue in Cairo, – The Convert is an historical novel and tells the story of Vigdis, a young woman in 11th century France from a prosperous Christian family. She meets and falls in love with a Rabbi’s son; risking everything to be with him. Blending fact and fiction, the author cleverly reconstructs the globetrotting travels of the young couple as Vigdis leaves her life and family in France, and together they flee the country to travel through the Middle East pursued by knights. Hertmans has managed to combine imagination and passion with historical fact in this story of star crossed lovers facing many challenges in 11th century France.

LEGEND OF THE WEEK What’s your role? I’m a massage therapist, when I was younger it was my dream to work on a cruise liner... I did that and here I am... still massaging :) How long in QT and why did you choose to live here? Over 2 years now, wow!!! My friend in Byron Bay said it was the best place in NZ to live sooo I gave it a go and I’m still here... Recommended must-do activity in and around QT? The Nevis Bungee Jump, if you are an adrenaline junky definitely give it a go... How would someone get your special attention? Make me reallllyyyy laugh ... :) laughter is the BEST medicine. What has been your best/ worst date? Ohh BEST date has to be... Prosecco, strawberry’s and music on a beach .. (All my fav things) ... WORST date... probably being taken for dinner and he “forgot his wallet” I mean I’m more than happy to pay my way but how cheeky haha! Who is your inspiration? My Dad, he’s a legend and my hero! What’s the most interesting thing you’ve read in the past week? Well I actually can’t believe this, but Gwyneth Paltrow is now selling a vagina-scented Goop candle ‘cause why not. What’s on your bucket list? Rio de Janeiro Carnival in Brazil... Feathers, Tassels, sun and Samba is right up my street.

Name: If you were an animal, what would you be and why? Definitely a dolphin... they always look like they are living the dream. What is something you do that other people would probably consider ‘’weird’’ if they knew? Eating peanut butter and carrots... It’s actually a pretty good combo you should try it :) Describe yourself in 5 words Caring, friendly, affectionate, chatty, silly. What did you always wanted to try but never found the courage to do? I really want to try and do a head stand on a paddle board :) although this could end in tears, lol. If you won a million dollars what would you spend it on? A roof top cocktail pool bar that’s heated in the winter :) What is your most valuable skill? And your most valuable? Most useless: I can balance a pint of beer on my bum (not sure how I discovered that one). Most valuable: I can teach Dancing (Adult classes every Wednesday with ‘DanceWorks’ if you fancied some mid week fun and fitness). What slang or trend makes you feel old? Scrunchies and chokers. What’s your best piece of advice? You get out of life what you put into it (My Grandad told me that once and it always stuck with me) :)

Trends in Sport in Central Otago by Bill Godsall, Sports Otago Kids are a big focus of sport and what I do in my role, so let’s start with the biggest myth about them: “kids are always on their devices!” While this might be the case for some, it’s certainly not the case for all. What I see more often is parents and couples walking about, at coffee shops, wherever, or whilst watching kids’ sport all staring intently at their screens! I wonder where the kids learn it from? A lot of kids, like my grandkids, when on their devices are often playing e-sports. Basketball and football are their favourites; they are learning tactics, rules and positioning – we then see them put these skills into real game time, their cognitive skills leave most adults well behind, so it’s not all bad. If your kids play too long on their devices, give them a set time slot to use them – it’s often that easy! Whilst we are being directed to focus on kids between 11 and 18 years old, already the main trend I see from kids sport is, most of them are out there doing it already. Whether it’s play, sport or active recreation at primary school, secondary school or most clubs, our kids are pretty active, secondary school sport is the big improver, mainly because the sports available are now so diverse, there is something for everyone. Another myth I hear but struggle with is that: “girls aren’t playing sport”. What I see,

especially in gyms and running events, is girls are well-represented. In the past two Queenstown Marathons, approximately 60% of the field are females, that’s the norm for most local events, where are the males? Well, 60% of mountain biking events are made up of 40+ males, the declining group appear to be the 18-35 year old males. This group appear to be some of the reason club sport is in decline – a lot of them are hunting, or doing more extreme pursuits like downhill mountain biking or down at the local jump park, but the majority appear to be lost to sport as we know it at the moment. So what do we take from all this? My advice is we all need to spend less time on devices, regardless of gender, we all need to get the recommended seven hours’ exercise per week, we all need sport/play/active recreation for our own well-being… just do it!

COMMUNITY NOTES What’s on? safeTALK Suicide Prevention Workshop safeTALK is a half-day alertness training that prepares anyone 15 or older, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicidealert helper. Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Presentations and guidance from Corinda Taylor who is a registered trainer. Time for thinking in Wanaka – the Aspiring Conversations festival of ideas Aspiring Conversations is a unique ideas festival set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Wanaka. This year’s festival takes place in Wanaka from Friday 3 to Sunday 5 April and features 11 events with high-calibre speakers, writers and thinkers discussing and debating the issues of today. The Aspiring Conversations will cover everything from fake news, to the climate revolution, to map-making, to how we can learn to love tax! Speakers include Marilyn Waring and Chlöe Swarbrick (New Zealand’s youngest MPs of the last 100 years), University of London journalism researcher Mel Bunce, scientist Shaun Hendy, novelist Fiona Farrell, Sir Tipene O’Regan discussing Ngai Tahu’s South Island cultural mapping project, and Jon Toogood, who will talk about being a Kiwi Muslim as well as the frontman for the rock band Shihad. For music fans, Radio NZ journalist Nick Bollinger will be joined by four Blues musicians who will talk about the history of, and their experiences with, The Blues, and perform some of their favourite blue songs. Festival director Philip Tremewan says the programme reflects the issues which are most pressing today and promises to be entertaining and inspiring. “We have a range of speakers this year who have real expertise in their fields – from politics to history, taxation to music, and fake news to the climate crisis.” And new for 2020, the ‘Streetside Soapbox – Big Issues, Short Talks’ will be Wanaka’s version of the Hyde Park Speakers’ Corner, featuring a line-up of quickfire soapbox talks and slam poetry on the pavement in central Wanaka. Aspiring Conversations is presented by the Southern Lakes Arts Festival Trust and is sponsored by Milford Asset Management, as well as is presented in association with Knowledge Partner McKinsey & Company.
