A kiwi BBC? What the Government’s media plan means for deep south. We’ve had the first glimpse of what the Labour Government is planning for the future of New Zealand Broadcasting - and it could be very good. The shutting down of both TVNZ and RNZ is looking like a preferred option - with both being replaced by a new joint entity. RNZ was starved of cash for a decade, mainly by the previous National Government that found public interest journalism difficult to stomach, with the result that the broadcaster was very badly damaged. It was the equivalent of withholding food, oxygen and water from a living person. In the meantime TVNZ lurched from being a public broadcaster, to being a commercial broadcaster and then back to a twilight zone where it was neither. $60 million on refurbishing their Auckland HQ in 2016 seemed to sum up the lack of clear direction and governance. For us here in the Deep South the effect of both broadcasters losing direction, one because of cash and the other because of culture, has been equally negative. RNZ closed its Queenstown office three years ago and TVNZ’s efforts to cover our region have hardly been a glorious success story. So now that Minister Kris Faafoi is close to announcing his plans it looks like both TVNZ and RNZ might get disestablished, to be replaced by a shiny new National Broadcaster - a sort of Kiwi BBC. The immediate benefits are exciting - RNZ’s team will get access to some deep television skills and TVNZ staff will be exposed to some of the traditional news values that have made RNZ such a big hit with audiences that are tired of superficial stories that barely scatch the surface of the real underlying issues. This is all great news for a future Head Office newsroom - but what about the Regions? National broadcasters all over the world struggle with this challenge. Ambitious reporters want to be in the big cities where the money and the big stories are to be found. Serving a brief apprenticeship in the provinces might be good for those up and coming journos - but it is not necessarily good news for the towns that host these itinerant ladderclimbers. The answer can and should sit with an alliance between the current New Zealand On Air model of funding independent production companies with the new national broadcaster providing a willing outlet for this content. The independent production sector can hire local journalists, videographers, editors and producers - all of whom can hopefully afford to make a decent living out of this new structure. The outsourcing of content production also brings a fresh and genuinely local perspective to national storytelling. Continues on page 8

A weekend in Manly Sydney is just a short flight away from Queenstown – and with a few airlines offering direct flights, a weekend out of the bubble is entirely possible. Not content to spend my weekend in the busy city, I headed to the Northern Beaches suburb of Manly. Thanks to great public transport options, Manly is surprisingly easy to get to. I got an Opal travel card on arrival and took the train to Circular Quay, where there’s fantastic views of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge from the ferry terminal. There’s a fast ferry (20 minutes) and a slow ferry (30 minutes), both can be used using the Opal card and run late into the evening. Crashing through the waves between the bridge and the opera house, looking back on the twinkling lights of inner-city Sydney, is a beautiful commute. Manly has a small-town vibe that I can only describe as the Aussie beach version of Queenstown – all the residents are up early to run, do yoga, surf or snorkel. Each evening, friends stay late at The Office, the local name for an esplanade where the sun sets are glorious and anyone who’s feeling energetic and competitive can sign up for a game of SUPball (I think this is a mix of ruby and netball, on stand-up paddle boards).

by Bethany Rogers

There’s also lots of beautiful coastal walks. The Manly Scenic Walkway hugs the coastline, through native bush and past a site with Indigenous art carvings to Spit Bridge. There was plenty of gorgeous coastal viewpoints and best of all, a bus back to Manly wasn’t too far from the end of the trail. Our plan was to get back in time to dine at Pocket Pizza. It’s got a cosy but cosmopolitan vibe, quirkily named dishes and a good balance between modern and traditional Italian cuisine. Manly has plenty of great cafes and restaurants to choose from. Boathouse on Shelly Beach was another favourite. It’s pricey, but the portions are huge, the ingredients divine and the views unparalleled. Shelly beach also proved to be a great place to snorkel for the day, with a melody of multicoloured fish who seemed nonplussed at all the humans peering down at them. Bush turkeys chasing each other across the sand provided entertainment too – at least for this tourist, who had never seen a wild turkey snaffling sandwiches on a beach before. For those who crave a bit of beach time, you can’t go wrong with a weekend trip to Manly. Getting there: Fly from Queenstown to Sydney and then take a ferry or bus to Manly.

What the ship!

I W My heart sank when I heard the news that the

Ferry is stopping at the end of February. You would think that for a town built alongside lakes and rivers, Council(s) supporting public transport that runs on the water would be a no-brainer. But no. It seems that all they want to do is pass the buck and make excuses they’ve been about as useful as a screen door on a submarine. QLDC, ORC and NZTA all need to get onboard - they talk of the need to adopt alternative transport modes, yet here’s existing infrastructure staring them in the face. Without supporting the ferry, they put more pressure on the already over-capacity roading network and further stretch the limited parking in the centre of

Whinge Page Poll Question

town. The ferry needs to be viewed as a public service, not a money-making venture. Bail it out; and then subsidise accordingly to make it buoyant. It might not be plain sailing to begin with but look at the bus network: a 180% increase in patronage in its first two years of being subsidised! $2 bus is a great start, but it will sink in isolation, particularly as traffic gets worse and worse. But if combined with a subsidised ferry it creates a more comprehensive public transport network and actual transport choices - not to mention the most beautiful commute you could ever ask for. And you can take your dog! Take the Lake.

Outages with Aurora. Aurora Energy’s proposal to charge their customers hundreds of millions to repair their transmission infrastructure is amazing. Dunedin CC (the quasi owners ) are passing the buck with a paltry offer of help. The Commerce Commission is still to finalise its findings into their lack of maintenance on their network over many years, which may end with a fine of 2 million dollars. Is this another cost to be added? I was a Powernet customer for 15+years and had 3 unplanned power outages - I have lived in Arrowtown (Aurora) for 13 months now and have had 13 unplanned outages Aurora has 90,000 users,

Dunedin has 130000 citizens, why aren’t they all using Aurora? Queenstown has a pop of 15000 many with Powernet-bet they don’t have outages AND they get a yearly refund of at least $130 every September. The best thing would be to use a a small portion of the proposed price hike to encourage Aurora ((DCC) to sell up to Powernet,as its already in parts of Queenstown and surrounds and I’m sure they would love to increase their coverage if allowed (at present Aurora wont allow them). That would be a win for all!

Vote Now! lwb.co.nz Should ORC chip in to subsidise the Go Orange ferry service operating between Queenstown Bay and Kelvin Heights? Editorial continues here: Helicoptering Auckland and Wellington reporters to the occasional regional story can often produce a never ending cycle of cliches and urban myths that do nothing to inform and educate the rest of New Zealand on what is actually happening in different parts of the country. So - bring on the change. But let’s have more regional NZ On Air funding to feed excellent local content to our new National Broadcaster. The alternative, a “Kiwi BBC” office in Queenstown, Wanaka and Cromwell with everrotating staff is more likely to produce “cookie cutter news” than authentic regional content. I remember it well, Frankton Rd was closed for days as the whole hill side by Marina Heights moved. Homes were evacuated during the night and a number of those homes were pulled down in the end, the hill had moved so much causing Frankton Rd to move. There was concern about the homes on the lake side of the road as well. When Frankton Rd first re opened it was limited to one way traffic and only during day light hours. I was there that moment in time... If it wasn’t for the big hole where the Church St Car Park is today, the flood would have engulfed the whole town. I was out side ole man rock in the mall watching the water rise... While Drinking Sea Breezes all afternoon Yip still remember this and the skyline classic golf tournament still going ahead even though the 5th hole was under water!!! I remember it well. For all the EVENTS happening in Queenstown CHECK OUT the

Awareness for men’s health Our fathers, partners, brothers and friends are facing a health crisis, yet it’s rarely talked about. Men are dying too young and thus in 2003 Movember was born. November is the month that funds are raised for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of NZ, Mental Health Foundation of NZ and host of other men’s health charities. Karl Le Couteur; is a local supporter and works as a Pilot in Queenstown for Milford Sound Flights. He’s always backed Movember; a charity that supports men’s health, prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health and suicide prevention. Karl had some personal struggles with mental health in the past and after making it through the other side decided to do something to raise awareness for mental health and raise money for this awesome charity! Mental health is extremely important in Aviation; as Pilots and operational staff they need to be on top of thier game to operate flights safely. It can be difficult to talk about mental health issues and other problems when you work in safety critical roles; as speaking out can mean losing your privilege to work. Often times this can lead to many people bottling up issues, rather than dealing with them in a healthy way; Karl is a man on a mission and aim’s to do more in the Aviation community to try and implement/ improve proactive support networks. This year he’s committed to run 57km and finish at the Milford Sounds Flights Hangar at Queenstown Airport. Due to safety concerns in regard to running through the Kawarau Gorge: I’ll be running from the Nevis Bluff, through to Arrowtown, around Lake Hayes, through to Frankton, finishing at the Milford Sound Flights Hangar. This combines various Queenstown Lakes Trails to form a 57km track. So I’ll still be completing the same distance and finishing at the Hangar; just avoiding creating a hazard to road users in the Kawarau Gorge. I’ll be completing the run on the 5th of December. He’s aiming to raise $5k, if he hit this goal it would go a long way to raise awareness for men’s health! Please get behind this awesome cause and help raise funds for Movember! Please, head to Movember.com and please make a donation to the Milford Sound Flights team!

Monthly Column We have some amazing people here in the Queenstown District. One lady, in particular, decided to take it upon herself to change the way we recycle through a simple system which will see users better informed. It was a privilege to stand alongside Niamh Peren as she presented her Thumbs Up New Zealand to Parliament recently. Her petition requested the Government to introduce new, simple & compulsory labelling on all food and drink packaging indicating whether the packaging is recyclable in New Zealand and made from recycled material. Her system proposed - two green thumbs up (packaging 100% recyclable in NZ & made from 100% recycled material), one horizontal yellow thumb (100% recyclable in NZ, not made from recycled material), two red thumbs down (not recyclable in NZ).

Niamh’s petition received more than 46,000 signatures in support. It is people like Niamh who make me so proud to be the MP for Clutha-Southland. I’m still lobbying for rezoning in the accommodation supplement space. The population in some of the areas currently deemed as rural has grown by more than 5000% since the last census in 2013. There is a real shortage of housing in Queenstown and people are forced to find housing where it’s available not by where it is zoned. Shotover Country and Lakes Hayes Estate are not in any way rural and need to be rezoned. In Wellington, I’ve lodged a Member’s Bill which will better protect our borders from biosecurity risks. Queenstown sees a high number of international visitors daily and it will work to better protect the district and the country. My bill will work by increasing the immediate fine to those caught sneaking risk items across the border from $400 to $1000, increasing the conviction fee to $2000 and also strengthening biosecurity officers’ ability to refuse entry to nonNew Zealand citizens or residents who knowingly break the law by bringing in risk items. I attended the official opening of the new Emergency Department at the Lakes District Hospital recently. A special mention and thank you must go to the different personnel during construction as they have continued to offer the normal services of the hospital while these developments have been ongoing. As our population continues to grow, there is an increased demand on services, like the hospital. The more that can be offered to the people of Queenstown the better, as the only other option is having to travel elsewhere to Invercargill or Dunedin. Well done to all of those involved in making these expansions happen.

Mishaps of the Lakes A recollection of the 1999 Floods by Lauren Prebble

Wednesday 20th of November marked the 20 year anniversary of the disastrous 1999 floods. For Lakes District Museum Director, David Clarke, the most poignant memory of that time was Williams cottage (fondly known now, as Vesta Design store). “It had just been restored and we had set it up as an annex to the museum here (in Arrowtown)” Before the fall, it was a 15 year graft to save Queenstown oldest cottage. It was owned by merchant and boat builder, John Williams. He purchased this cottage in 1864. On the shore of his lake side property he built one of the first steam ships named after his wife, Jane Williams. A trust had been set up to raise funds to restore it back to it’s former glory. “It was being run as an old-fashioned shop as well interpretation of early Queenstown and shipping on the lake... There was a huge fanfare when it opened. A few years later it was under water...” David describes a painfully ironic photo that was taken of William Cottage after the storm.

"One of the panels in the cottage with was on 'mishaps on the lake' and you can see that panel floating around in the water."

Photo supplied by Lakes District Museum: Williams Cottage (yellow building) submerged by the 1999 flood.

Once the water drained, the combination of schist dust and water formed a cement that was baked on halfway up the walls. David recalled chiselling away at the and scrubbing timber floors with a tooth brush.

“We spent hours cleaning it out but it never opened again as a museum annex - We were over it by then.” The bathhouse, near by, was another historic restoration project that had been swamped. “Those were two pretty traumatic events for people who were interested in trying to protect Queenstown’s influential buildings.”

CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

Everyone who visits Queenstown thinks we are very spoilt with all the great events we have to choose from. I agree but while I’m happy to be spoilt, I don’t want our beautiful basin spoilt with too much development. Everyone should know there is a quick survey on lets.talk.qldc.govt.nz but December 1st is the cutoff to let council know what future Wakatipu should look like. Over the hill in Wanaka on Friday is lunch with Christine Fernyhough - famous for her work with Books in Homes and the Gifted Kids Programme. She’s also an author and raconteur launching her new book Mid-Century Living. I’m a very greedy reader but even greedier about food and the lunch is at Lipsky and Sons - Leungo Lippe’s (the original chef at Botswana Butchery) new restaurant - reading his CV will make you hungry, the menu will have you drooling. Tickets are $25 and can be bought from Paper Plus in Wanaka. You might have to travel far to see Dear Lupin - the play is on this week in Glenorchy, Alexandra and Bannockburn but it’s totally sold out for the Sherwood performance. The book is hysterically funny and I can only imagine how good this show is going to be with a real life father and son playing the lead roles. I’ve got very tired toes today after a busy night at the Cancer Society’s Great Gatsby Ball. Such sexy salsa dancers lured us all onto the dance floor and no one stopped dancing after that. Blair Vining’s brother (he did complain that no one ever remembers his actual name) was the MC and he had loads of great acts to introduce starting with the very talented Sam Mehrtens’ jazz duo to Margaret O’Hanlan’s band Red Entertainment - I took my elderly husband home at 11.30pm but the dancefloor was still packed. Even the octogenarians were out late - the backsides of the salsa dancers certainly got their attention even if their eyesight IS fading. Some octogenarians haven’t heard that old age is a time for slowing down. For Christine Hill’s 80th birthday, they took a gang of friends to walk the Routeburn. It was so windy and snowy and freezing that the track was closed on the last day. When I turn 80, I’m going to invite them to do the Routeburn with me, but they’ll probably still be faster than me. It’s not too late to buy tickets for the Wakatipu Plunket garden tour at Mitre 10 or you modern tech whizzes can get them at Eventfinda. It’s on December 1st and it’s a fabulous way to raise money AND catch up with loads of your friends, oh and see lots of great local gardens so you can learn what does and doesn’t grow here and which plants do not appeal to rabbits. Very important.....!

Arts+Culture Dragons, chocolate and promises “The book is set in the real world. Avis gets a pet-sitting role from an unusual sort of person and everything is not what it seems… she must make some decisions and she doesn’t always make the right decisions. She quickly learns that once you make a promise to a dragon, that can never be broken,” explains Heather. Heather says she started out as a teacher who wrote, but now she’s a writer who teaches. She’s always been interested in writing children’s fiction, but it was a poetry teacher who introduced her to flash fiction. Heather is now well-known locally and internationally for her flash fiction and at the same time as releasing ‘Avis’, her collection ‘Where Oceans Meet’ was published in the UK.

Heather McQuillan is taking youngsters on a trail of secrets and stories at her event for young writers and readers this week. ‘A Promise of Dragons’ promises room to stretch the imagination. There’ll be a lizard quiz and, for those brave enough, a chance to taste some dragonish chocolate. The author and creative writing teacher will also share some stories from her book ‘Avis and the Promise of Dragons’. Heather writes for young people and is the author of award-winning short-stories, flash fiction and poetry. She’s also the director at WRITE ON School for Young Writers in Christchurch. “There’ll be secrets, dragons and chocolate tasting – a very appealing combination,” says Heather. “We’ll do a quiz on whether you know the difference between a skink, a gecko and a dragon, and because I’m currently working on my next book, they can get involved and draw or write ideas for a new character.” The event will be based around Heather’s current book, ‘Avis and the Promise of Dragons’ (available for sale at the event).

“I complained to my teacher all my poems turned into stories; he introduced me to flash fiction and now I love the form. You can spend hours on an intense piece, obsess over it and edit it over and over – you can’t do that with a novel.” While she’s in Queenstown, Heather will also do a talk for older audiences (15+) on the book and will discuss flash fiction as the intersection where poetry and stories meet. She says she’s had good feedback from the book so far – even though it contains te reo and other Aotearoa influences that may be quite foreign for overseas readers. “People love reading about other places – there’s an exoticness to it. One of the stories in the book has been selected for Best Small Fictions [an international flash fiction prize] and I wonder how [people from different cultures] read into that. It shows we CAN write our New Zealand stories and see them enjoyed overseas.” Meet Heather at A Promise of Dragons (and chocolate) on Wednesday 27th November, Sherwood Queenstown. Further information and tickets are available from Eventbrite. For adult writers and readers (15 +), Heather’s ‘Where Oceans Meet’ event on 28th November will also be held at Sherwood and tickets are again available from Eventbrite.

Art News New book documents Branches Camp Local author Sue Fea has written a book about Branches, the iconic Queenstown high school camp. Long Drops and Hard Knocks celebrates fifty years of Wakatipu High School Branches Camp memories. The camp is based in the remote Branches Station, beyond Skippers Canyon Road. It’s a “last hurrah” for Year 10 students (before their senior NCEA exams) – the students must survive with few facilities in the wilderness, learning key skills and developing personal attributes as they do so. Originally a geography camp, Branches started in 1967 and is thought to be one of the longest-running of its kind in New Zealand. From the conservative style of the first ever camp through to the ‘70’s Wild Child’, the ‘Naughty Noughties’ (2000s) and today’s ‘Screenagers’ (2010 onwards), Long Drops and Hard Knocks is full of memories and stories from camp graduates, teachers and Branches Station farming families. The book was arranged by the Branches Trust, which helps to fund the camp’s running costs. Trust chairperson Louise Ward says the camp now costs just over $100,000 annually, up from $88,000 in 2016. The trust contributed $40,000 towards the 2017 camp ensuring that parents only had to pay $350 per student. “We also now have to pay experienced and qualified tramping, rafting and kayaking guides,” says Louise. “We’ve had such an amazing response from graduates who dug deep into their home archives and garages to contribute incredible photos, so this is a very colourful account of Branches Camp history.”

The book was launched at an event at Wakatipu High School on 21st November and copies are available via the Branches Trust website and Facebook page. Proceeds from the book go towards the Branches Trust.

Cnr Stanley & Ballarat St, Queenstown - 03 441 3065 Sponsoring The Entertainment Page

LEGEND OF THE WEEK Name: Lucy Deuble What’s your role and how did you get into your position? Food Rescue Warrior! I was researching ways to be more involved in the community, which is a bit geeky when I say it out loud. But anyways, and I saw Sustainable Queenstown was hiring for this new role (officially its Queenstown Food Coordinator), but Food Rescue Warrior is way more fun! I’ve always been a fan girl of Sustainable Queenstown, and now I get to work with them and KiwiHarvest. Squeal. Dream job. www.kiwiharvest.org.nz How long have you been in QT and why did you choose to live here? 6 years... It has all my favorite parts of nature and all my favorite things to do. Snowboarding, mountains, wakeboarding, waterfalls & nature walks. Except no ocean, but I’ve finally started calling the lakefront the beach now, so I guess that will do. Recommended must-do activity in and around Queenstown? Can I have 2 things? Hike up to Ben Lomond and camp overnight. Attend Green Drinks by Sustainable Queenstown, 3rd Thursday of every month ;). How would someone get your special attention? Run out in front of my KiwiHarvest van screaming they want to help solve the food waste problem in New Zealand. Hopefully I would see them first. Hopefully... What has been your best/worst date? Worst – I’ve been pretty lucky…the dates have been good. Just a few dud guys! But that’s not the dates fault. Best - Hiked up to Ben Lomond and camped overnight on the saddle for NYE and then woke up super early to get to the very top to watch the first sunrise of the New Year. Swoon! Hence now, one of my recommended must do activities. Who is your inspiration? The unsung volunteer heroes of Queenstown!! Through KiwiHarvest I have met so many people who volunteer their time in such a selfless way, and without their generosity and care, this community would not be so special. They are an inspiration! What's the most interesting thing you've read, seen or learned in the past week? My house plant which is a fern, has started growing little ferns on its own leaves. It’s like reproducing with itself! So I read up on it, and the little ferns are called plantlets. TOO CUTE!!! What's on your bucket list? Bungy Jumping (cliché, I know. But all will be revealed below) If you were an animal, what would you be? Obviously, an Albatross. They fly. Tick. They live near the ocean. Tick. They are huge. No one would mess with you. What is the first thing you notice about a person? How they greet you for the first time. Huggers vs. Handshakers. Huggers always intrigue me. What is something you like to do that other people would probably consider ‘’weird’’ if they knew? Getting mani/pedi’s. Eeek cat’s out of the bag! If you had to describe yourself in 5 words, what would they be? A professional walking, talking, oxymoron. What is your most useless/valuable skill? Useless – Belly rolling Valuable – Wolf whistling What did you always wanted to try? Bungy Jumping (still cliché) What is that one joke that you cannot tell without laughing hard? What do you call a prostitute with a runny nose? What’s your best piece of advice? Give back to your community! Honestly, you have no idea the sort of crazy feelings it opens up inside you until you give it a go. Find something that sparks your interest and get involved.
