Why is Winter Pride Important? On June 28th, a headline article in The Atlantic boldly proclaimed, “The struggle for gay rights is over. For those born into a form of adversity, sometimes the hardest thing to do is admitting that they’ve won.” If that’s the case, why are events like Queenstown’s Winter Pride still relevant and necessary? Setting aside the horse-blinders obliviousness of that statement – is a struggle for “rights” ever really over when they must be constantly defended? Or when queer people who are poor, homeless, HIV positive, or trying to adopt children still face massive discrimination? Or when trans people can still be fired from their jobs simply for being trans, even in wealthy western countries? Events like Winter Pride in Queenstown still serve a necessary, wonderful community function. All people in Queenstown have felt it – this is a tough town to build community in. It’s a transient town where people come and go with the seasons, where those in one socioeconomic bracket rarely mingle with others, where maintaining friendships can be fraught with difficulty due to contrasting hospitality-based rosters. The longer you stay in Queenstown, the more you watch friends and loved ones move away because they’ve had their fun or they just can’t afford to live here anymore. It’s bloody tough for any person to forge close relationships here. Winter Pride and Gay Ski Week before it have done a fantastic job at not only bringing in the tourist crowd, but giving the often-fractured and scattered members of Queenstown’s LGBTI+ community a place to gather ‘round and mingle and be seen, a place to find and connect with people in a safe and accepting environment. And while some may say that “safe” isn’t something people have to worry about in New Zealand, it’s important to remember that many Queenstown residents come from places that aren’t so tolerant. And not only that, but many queer people still face violence and discrimination on our own shores. It can be an isolating experience to be gay or trans in a place where building connections is difficult for everyone. Even as LGBTI+ people receive more legal protections in New Zealand, the social necessity of events like Winter Pride lives on: providing a place where people can be themselves, meet people on a similar wavelength, and experience warmth and community in a place that can sometimes feel a little chilly for reasons other than the snow. Flat Earth. Court Case. Click bait.

Recently a local journalist published an article on the Herald that highlighted two Queenstown locals amidst a ridiculous court case of he said, nah, he said. To save yourself 5 -10 minutes of your life, I will give you my hypothesis because it is truly not worth the time of day to read this. Two male stoners, squabbling about whether the earth is flat or not. One whole-heartedly believes it is and puts $10,000 bid on the line, both shake on it with a vague understanding that neither party obviously have this amount of money on hand. Yet, one of the culprits are stubborn on the bet, the other adamant on their view.

After a couple of taunting encounters it evoked a flippant threat to kill the flat earther... with a crossbow. The threat is taken seriously by the victim and got dragged into the courts where the judge ultimately had to play the role of a school teacher, and made both parties apologize to each other before dismissing the case. LIKE CHILDREN. WHY did this get published? Honestly! It’s not news at all. I read it as a squabble. I s’pose they knew they would get a click- bait reaction. Is this what our news has become? The best headline wins? Only good thing to come of this article is the flat-earth puns Herald plays Flatmate for headline.

RE: Editorial ‘Less growth please’ You would think that the current council and Mayor were elected to solely represent those property owners located within the wider CBD. It’s amazing how they want to spend millions of Mum and Dad ratepayers funds on improving parking and facilities including building themselves a monolith on one of the busiest and congested streets in the area! Yet these same people continually approve consents for new hotel and apartments buildings with little or no off-street parking, thus allowing for the further strain on the areas already deficient infrastructure!!

Perhaps the answers on why can be found in the minutes of the closed-door public excluded meetings and back door land swaps, wheeling and dealing, that this council decision making has revolved around. Hopefully, John when you are elected you will put a stop to this nonsense and name and shame those involved. #gotmyvote

RE: Sitting. and waiting. behind a bumper... daily Yes, time for a change at the police leadership in Queenstown. Its hopeless its all based on reactionary rather than proactive policing be it on the road, foot patrols (when is it the last time you have seen that in the CBD) or idiots both locals and visitors driving around with mobile phones glued to their ear,

parking on footpaths and yellow lines and seen police cars driving past (plenty of times). With the extra police coming to the district maybe its time to through away the car keys and cozy offices and get to some real policing work. 5-0 5-0.

Vote Now! lwb.co.nz Do you agree with the new speed reductions for Queenstown?

Facebook / Website comments RE: Whinge Poll - Is Wanaka better than Queenstown? I don’t see any point in this poll. What’s the purpose, please? Town Pride? So a ‘whinge poll’ helps to restore Town pride? Yeh. RE: Where are all the millionaires? Actually... I’m still with the opinion that tourists are already spending a lot in town so taxes should be raised to hotels/motels/hostels in percentages according to their profits. Sure eventually it might fall back to whoever is booking a room but at least it won’t feel like they are paying extra just to stay in Queenstown. Plus they will still have a choice to book something cheaper - which with the levy it seems to me there’s no choice on their end. Tax the Accom.

Arts+Culture Klezmer Traditions in Arrowtown

What’s Happening

28th – 31st August, 8pm – 11pm Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall (33 Buckingham Street) Tickets $55 plus fees from Eventfinda The Kugels are bringing the traditions of klezmer, Jewish folk music, to Arrowtown this September. The ensemble is comprised of top classical soloists Debbie Rawson (clarinet, saxophone and xaphoon), Robin Perks (violin), Jacqueline Norden (bass) and renowned New Zealand composer Ross Harris, who plays accordion and has composed much of The Kugel’s repertoire. “We play a mix of traditional klezmer music and compositions by Ross, who puts it on a whole new level,” says Debbie Rawson. “He’s a great composer, an Arts Laureate, and he captures the spirit of klezmer but puts a 21st Century spin on it. He turns it into an art form, it’s not academic – it’s very easy to listen too.” The tradition of klezmer music comes from European Jewish traditions. It originated as religious chants and became enchanting dance music for religious and social celebrations like weddings, and bar and bat mitzvahs. It spread across the Mediterranean and Middle East and was hugely popular.

Saturday 31st August, 7:30pm – 9:30pm Wakatipu High School (47-49 Red Oaks Drive) Tickets: $65 plus fees from Eventfinda

“Klezmer nearly died out after WW2 – for obvious reasons. But a resurgence started in New York and now it’s spreading around the world – it’s wonderful to see it everywhere. It’s wild, haunting, it’s very exciting and very infectious! “It’s like World music on acid,” adds Debbie. Careful listeners will hear hints of gypsy music, but klezmer arguably has a more universal appeal. Debbie explains that it is a music form of contrasts, “there’s lots of profound and mournful music, or there’s exciting dance music – there’s nothing in between. It’s a unique experience.” The style is in stark contrast to what the band members of The Kugels have played for many years – they met in school in Christchurch and went on to play together in the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Debbie says that now the quartet have “quit [their] arduous jobs and have time to play with,” they’re taking the time to explore this striking form. “Klezmer is played with a very different mind-set. We really enjoy the freedom of it. It’s all about the heart and the feel of it. There’s lots of glissando and vibrato that you couldn’t get away with in a Mozart concerto – of course, we still love playing classical music, but this is another string to our bow.” The Kugels are taking the klezmer tradition out of dance halls and wedding ceremonies, to venues across New Zealand. Catch them at the Arrowtown Community Centre on 8th September. Tickets are available from the Arrowtown Creative Arts Society ($30 or $25 for ACAS members, includes food).

Saturday 31st August, 5pm – 7pm Sherwood (554 Frankton Road) Tickets $60 from beabellingham.com

Art News New Zealand’s ‘creepiest’ sculpture now in Wellington After terrifying members of the public in Christchurch, ‘Quasi’ will now haunt the streets of Wellington. The five-metre-high sculpture of a hand with a face has certainly achieved what all good art should: it’s got people talking. The sculpture is a ‘partial self-portrait’ by Melbourne-based artist Ronnie van Hout, who created it to cheer up his home town of Christchurch following the devastating 2011 earthquake. It’s lived on top of the Christchurch Art Gallery since 2016 and was transferred to the roof of the Wellington City Gallery via helicopter last week. It will remain there for three years. The artist has insisted that it is not supposed to look like Donald Trump, but some claim they can see a resemblance. Others have described it as “terrifying” and a “Lovecraftian nightmare”. In a statement, the Wellington City Gallery said: “It will haunt City Gallery’s roof this season, presiding over a Civic Square largely abandoned in the wake of our own 2016 quake.” It remains to be seen whether the creepy hand will encourage crowds back to the Civic Square.

Party at Winnies!

Includes party bags, decorations & ice cream Free Winnies t-shirt if it’s your birthday

To book call 03 442 8635 or email info@winnies.co.nz Kids wait all year to celebrate their birthday, so much excitement from birthday cake, yummy food to hanging with their mates and whatever fun activity you have planned. Whether you are looking for party ideas, venues or gift ideas – Queenstown has it covered. Here a few tips to get you started. 1. LOCATION: Where will the party take place? At your home? At the pools? At an attraction? At a restaurant? Many places offer interesting packages for children’s parties. 2. INVITATIONS: Sending out the invitations at least two weeks in advance will make it easier for everyone to get organised, including the parents of your young guests. Tip: Ensure when handing out party invitations you go the right way about it. For example; hand invites out on the weekends, post or email them as not everyone can always be invited - this way avoids children getting upset if they are not invited. 3. THEME: Add a little magic to the party by choosing a theme that appeals to your son or daughter, such as a favourite movie, animals, superheroes or princesses. 4. ACTIVITIES: Take your child’s preferences into consideration when planning some fun activities — think treasure hunts, party games, sports or even inflatable games. You could also hire a professional entertainer. Tip: If playing pass the parcel some kids can get upset if they don’t win the final present – a great way to ensure everyone’s a winner is by placing a little lollipop or gift in each layer. 5. TASTY TREATS: You can have a party catered by a restaurant, grocery store, deli, bakery, cake or chocolate shop. If you feel up to It you can even do it yourself.

Sydney’s City to Surf, one of the world’s great runs, is held the second weekend in August. For Australia, the weather is normally fine, calm and cool – so it’s perfect running weather, which is important for the world’s largest fun run. This August was the 49th event. There were 84,000 participants of which 10,000 were interstate and international entrants, including me. The 14km course starts in Hyde Park in the city and finished at the iconic Bondi Beach, following the coastline through Edgecliff, Double Bay, Rose Bay and Vaucluse. I have run it about ten times now and it’s still an unreal event. It attracts all kinds of runners, from the very, very serious to first timers who are jogging and walking with friends and family. I used to live and work in Sydney so the run is a great excuse to head over for a long weekend – we’re fortunate to have direct connections from Queenstown Airport. This fast-paced city always has interesting additions that have popped up in your absence. The ANZAC Memorial in Hyde Park has been completed to the architect’s original vision with the addition of four levels of cascading water and a new Hall of Service on the southern approach. Sydney also has a diverse and extraordinary food scene covering all price points, but it’s a very, very competitive scene. I visited Lillah’s Kitchen with friends in Lane Cove and highly recommend it. While Sydney is a big metropolis now, it’s still an easy city to get around using public transport and you can’t get far without seeing the massive investment going into more infrastructure. There’s Light Rail, new rail tunnels under the harbour, new motorways and lots of ferries and cycle racks. After the C2Surf, hundreds of free buses efficiently transported the participants out of the area to Bondi Junction to connect with the train network. Likewise, while it’s a large city interacting is easy. Businesses want to fit you in and they want to make it efficient so you have a good experience and hopefully come back. It makes you want to return (and I will!)

Artificial Intelligence The rise of the machines!!! Once upon a time, human access to electricity was limited to occasionally getting hit by lightning. Then some bright sparks worked out a few things with wires, batteries, and generators. Initially it was completely Frankensteinien steampunk - bubbling glass jar batteries and huge, riveted, cast iron generators - with only minor impacts on society. A century later, we had an entire world based on stuff you can plug in. Last year, 20 top lawyers challenged Artificial Intelligence (AI), competing to spot legal flaws in a contracting document. The lawyers did ok, catching 85% of the problems, 15% slipping through, but the AI trounced them, missing only 4%. But that’s not the headline. The lawyers, charging hundreds of dollars an hour in their day jobs, took an average of an hour and a half - if you were one of their clients, you might have paid $500 for a 15% failure rate. The AI work was four times better and took only 26 seconds: Even if the AI charged $1000 an hour, that’d still only be a $7 fee. And yet in AI terms, we’re still at bubbling jars and riveted cast iron. Unlike electricity, it won’t take a century for AI to remake our world. The change will be even more dramatic, but the timeline will be more like smartphones, which took just 10 years from not existing to global ubiquity. AI is already more ubiquitous than many of us realise: When you talk to your phone or Alexa at home and it understands you, that’s speech recognition and natural language processing; when it talks back that’s natural language generation; when your face unlocks your phone that’s facial recognition; and when your car beeps because you’re close to the center line, that’s machine vision. These are all relatively low power examples of AI. Currently we see the high voltage is in machine learning and deep learning. AI of these flavours specialise in tackling complex problems, both capable of making decisions processing vastly more data than humans can handle - and of generating the best possible solutions when only limited data is known. These are the AI’s that would be powerful enough to not only warn you when you’re tailgating, but drive the car; to not only check contracts, but decide court cases; to not only predict an election, but manipulate the outcome. This power will and is revolutionising our world, making the advent of electricity seem like a minor tweak - so how do we make sure we don’t ‘stick our finger in the socket’? AI will need to learn not only to be ‘smart’, but also to be ‘good’. We don’t each need to know how to develop AI, but we do need to understand its power and implications, and know enough to be a part of the conversation over what it must be taught and when it should be used. AJ Mason Erstwhile astrophysicist, geek-in-residence, usual suspect Shaping Our Future will host Neil Jacobstein, a global authority on AI, at a free public presentation on September 4th. Queenstown is a special place for freeskier Margaux Hackett. “I’ve been coming here for as long as I can remember to visit family, explore, and ski,” she says. “I loved it so much that I decided four years ago to base myself out of Wanaka for the southern hemisphere winter. I travel from winter to winter and Cardrona has the best park at this time of the year so it’s perfect for training and competing.”

In 2016, she managed to pull off a 720 over the big air at the first Jossi Wells Invitational at Cardrona. “I was amazed to even be hitting that big of a jump,” she says. “It was definitely one of the best feelings I’ve had.”

Athlete Profile - Margaux Hackett

Currently competing on the World Cup circuit, Hackett started off an alpine ski racer but soon found she craved something different that involved more fun and adrenaline. “I watched my brothers building jumps and having the best time,” she says. She grew up in La Clusaz, home of freestyle legend and filmmaker Candide Thovex. After going to watch his invitational with her family, she decided to join the local freestyle club which included slopestyle, halfpipe, moguls, and backcountry skiing. She was drawn to the creativity of slopestyle and loves the opportunity to push her limits daily, figuring out lines and learning new tricks and incorporating features into her runs.

425

After competing in international events like the SFR tour and European Open in Laax, she acquired points in Winter Games and Europa Cups and got her first World Cup start in March 2016. Since then she’s been following the circuit, and has attained a place as arguably New Zealand’s top female Slopestyle freeskier. Hackett is passionate about encouraging girls into skiing and athletics. “To all the girls out there,” she says. “Keep being you and keep pushing yourself. Remember you’re the only one putting limits on yourself so don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it! You’d be surprised at how amazing it is if you let go and trust that you can be as much of a badass as the boys around you.”

The Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day is on Friday 30th August Daffodil Day is the Cancer Society’s biggest fundraiser, and symbolises hope for the 1 in 3 New Zealanders affected by cancer. With the population boom in Queenstown, unfortunately we are seeing more local people of all ages affected by cancer. As we don’t receive any direct government funding, Daffodil Day is an opportunity to raise much needed funds that enable us to support these people and their families affected by cancer in our community. All money raised helps us work with our community to reduce the risk of cancer through health promotion initiatives, to provide practical support and care for those families who need our support, to fund Daffodil House (a home away from home for patients undergoing treatment in Dunedin), and to help fund ground-breaking cancer research to create a future with less cancer. This year we’re encouraging all local businesses to get behind us and ‘Paint August Yellow for Daffodil Day!’ Whether it be a mufti day, a morning tea or perhaps a head shave – think about how your business could support this great cause. All money raised stays within our region so you will be directly supporting your local area. If you could donate one or two hours of your time on Friday 30th August, we are looking for street collectors to help us out around Frankton and Queenstown – this is great way to get involved and have fun! If you would like to help – please contact Shantelle on 021411713 or Shantelle.cg@cansoc.org.nz The Cancer Society would like to thank all of the businesses and individuals who choose to support us, and a special big thank you goes out to all of the incredible volunteers who selflessly donate their time – we’re constantly blown away by the generosity of our community. We look forward to seeing you all out there with our fresh daffodils on Friday 30th August!

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN

Creativity Always Prevails Author: Margaret O’Hanlon

‘Radio KAOS’ (written by Charlotte Graf), is the story of a local radio station in Queenstown in 1987, in the days when radio stations could afford to base their programming around local content, and local faces. This show is a labour of love from scriptwriter Charlotte Graf, who used to work in radio. Queenstown has changed a lot since the ’80s when I first moved here. In 1989 I launched the first open mic music and comedy night, ‘Showcase’ which lasted 17 years and outlived five of its eight venues. Commercial interests may be reliant on the market swings, but creativity always prevails. ‘Radio KAOS’ is the latest original script and full-scale musical production from Whirlwind Productions, the home of rock-n-roll theatre. I launched Whirlwind in 2010 when we decided to pull together a rock opera based solely on the music of the great David Bowie. We got the attention of Bowie’s management company in New York due to the controversial move of having 17-yearold Max Gunn (‘The Shambles’) shoot up and OD onstage. I have always been more interested in the challenge of an original idea, as opposed to something already written. Last year we presented ‘Crazy’, a very moving look at individuals struggling in the mental health system. ‘Radio Kaos’ is the 8th original script Whirlwind has churned out, and I am always proud that our cast and crew are made up entirely of Queenstowners. As Queenstown expands, our pool of local talent increases as well. I am overjoyed to be working with some very exciting new young talent in ‘Radio KAOS’. Watch out for Alex Littlewood, Danika Leigh Cuillo, Danni Blow, and local lady Kimberley Ramsey, alongside veteran performers Mike Legge (co-writer), Fee Stephenson-Smith and Mark Ferguson. However, finding adequate rehearsal space has been an issue. As Chairman and member of QPACT, I watch our facility struggle to keep up with demand. We are home to 12 different dance groups, various bands, music teachers and theatrical productions like Radio KAOS. While it is very exciting to hear promises of a new facility to accommodate out-of-town performances, I wonder how much consideration will be given to the existing Queenstown based artists and the original work we are doing in continuing to keep the community entertained. Original productions like ‘Radio KAOS’ are truly the heart and soul of Queenstown.

Radio KAOS runs August 28 – 31 at the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall. Tickets from Eventfinda. Proudly sponsored by Shipleys Audiovisual.

JULY JOB ADS REMAIN SUBDURED BUT THERE ARE SIGNS OF LIFE AHEAD July was another slow month for job postings which was good news for employers who were looking for staff. Qualified candidate applications from advertised job postings were well above normal with a number of employers reporting the best candidate results in years. Overall the number of job openings was behind 2018 by 20%. 492 roles were advertised in July this year as against 593 in 2018.

While July was another negative growth month and the seventh in a row, the number of roles available grew 45% from June which was a significant increase when compared to the last couple of years. Traditionally we’d expect to see around 10% growth between June and July as this is the first month when the market starts to build at the back end of the year. The huge growth may in part might be as a result of transient staff who are here for the winter season, who moved on early when the snow failed to materialize in June and early July. Early numbers for August indicate growth is quickly returning now some confidence returning to the market. Within the sectors, the accommodation area posted the same number of roles as last year with all other sectors showing a large decline year to year. Tourism and construction have been particularly reticent to hire staff across the last four months with the result a 5% decline in share being recorded this month for these two sections. F&B and Accommodation areas continue to dominate in jobs advertised with 57% of all roles covering vacancies across these two.

Summary • July was behind the same month last year by 20% making this the 7th month is row of negative growth. • Employers continue to hold off making anything but critical employment calls. • Retaining key staff is becoming problematic as seasonal staff choose to move on from Queenstown. • July numbers jumped 45% compared to June with the early signs for August also looking solid.

Lower job numbers was partly because businesses were holding off on hiring immediately when a role became open, and many were ‘making do’ with their existing workforce headcount and redistributing tasks to gain greater efficiencies while uncertainty existed around how the season was going to unfold.
