LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN Giving Through The Year As the festive season approaches, many of us are preparing to gather with whānau, share meals, and celebrate together. But for some families in our community, Christmas brings added pressure, with worry about how to put food on the table or afford gifts for their children. It’s a timely reminder that generosity, compassion, and community matter more than ever. Life in Aotearoa is getting harder for many, and here in the Whakatipu we’re seeing it too. Behind the beauty and the buzz of tourism, there are families and individuals quietly struggling to make ends meet. Food insecurity isn’t just an issue for big cities anymore; it’s right here in our community. This is why the Salvation Army will be opening a Social Supermarket in Frankton. We’re moving away from pre-packed food parcels. People will be able to choose their own groceries, just like others do when they shop at the supermarket but without the stress of cost. It’s about dignity, choice, and care, helping families plan meals that work for them. For us, food is often the first step. It opens the door to provide wrap around support for families and individuals including, budgeting support, counselling, and practical help that gives people confidence and hope in managing their lives and decision making. This isn’t just about meeting immediate needs; it’s about creating a space where people feel respected, welcomed, and supported. Queenstown is an amazing place to live, but the reality is that many families are struggling right now. The price of housing, electricity, petrol, groceries, create a real pressure for families. People tell us they’re working two jobs just to make ends meet, and even then, it’s a struggle. Our Social Supermarket is part of a bigger vision. Our “Under One Roof” project, will bring food support and other community services together at our new Frankton site, alongside other social services. Because real change happens when we work together. This model is already making a difference in other parts of the country. It is reducing food waste, improving nutrition, and giving people the power to make choices that suit their lives. Most importantly, it builds connection and reminds us that everyone deserves to be fed with dignity. We’re so grateful for the $100,000 grant from Impact100 Whakatipu (part of 45 South Foundation) that’s helping make this possible. Together, we can make sure no one in the Whakatipu goes hungry or feels forgotten. Food security isn’t just about meals; it’s about giving people the tools and confidence to thrive. This Christmas, the Salvation Army has been providing food hampers and gifts to those in need, which helps create a special Christmas for someone who might otherwise go without. Thank you for all your donations which have helped us share hope this Christmas. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and all the very best for the year ahead. Concerns for overseas visitors heading into the hills by Sue Fea Alpine and Police search and rescue experts are reiterating warnings, particularly to overseas visitors, to “do your research” before heading into the hills this summer, amid a concerning trend to rely on social media posts for information. Wānaka Police SAR coordinator Senior Constable Dean Harbison says they’re concerned about the number of people, especially overseas visitors unfamiliar with New Zealand’s variable conditions, getting into difficulty. “We’re working with DOC and the Mountain Safety Council to get better messaging out but the platforms to cover are insurmountable,” he says. “Don’t believe everything you see (on social media).” Be prepared for all weathers with good communications and gear. Harbison says NZ is a small, coastal country with mountains in the middle and conditions can change quickly. Visitors from the likes of North America and Europe don’t realise that, he says. They’re concerned that they’re seeing more overseas visitors and travellers who are ill-equipped for New Zealand’s variable conditions, heading out without the right information and gear. “Often they’re going solo. If you’re walking alone, you need a personal locator beacon and inReach, the right equipment, and to have done your research, checking on the conditions and experience level required with DOC,” Harbison says. “Get the local information and research the route you take. DOC has a lot of good information.” (www.doc.govt.nz) Walks like Brewster Track, Siberia, Rabbit Pass-Waterfall Face, near the Matukituki, and Earnslaw Burn at the head of Lake Wakatipu have become increasingly popular, but people need to beware heading into these areas. Wakatipu Alpine Cliff Rescue Team coordinator Russ Tilsley says people heading into the backcountry need to realise the extent of what they’re doing, make sure they’re capable and have the right experience. “Don’t underestimate the difficulty of the terrain you’re heading into, the time it takes and the distance,” he says. “Make sure you’ve researched your route thoroughly, not relying on social media, but reliable sources like DOC.”

Flavor Fiesta Fireworks

“Be sure your skill level matches the tasks you’re undertaking and ensure you’re totally prepared to spend extra time,” Tilsley says. “This is NZ and the Southern Alps where the weather changes in a number of hours,” he says. “A lot of foreign people are not aware of how our weather can change here rapidly so please check the forecast.”

Where Rituals and Results Intertwine: A New Sanctuary for Queenstown Locals In a town known for adrenaline and fast-paced living, true rest can be surprisingly hard to find. That’s exactly why Indulge Skin & Wellness, Frankton’s newest luxury spa, was created - a place where locals can genuinely switch off, feel deeply cared for, and still achieve real results for their skin and body. Founded by long-time spa professional Michelle Troon, Indulge was born from a simple frustration she heard again and again from Queenstown clients. “Facials often fall into two camps,” says Troon. “They’re either very clinical - in and out, ticking boxes but lacking touch - or they feel beautiful in the moment, but don’t actually support long-term skin goals. I wanted to bridge that gap.” At Indulge, treatments are designed to do both. Every facial and massage combines luxurious, hands-on rituals with science-backed techniques and technology, so clients leave not only relaxed, but confident they’re moving closer to their skin and wellness goals. After more than 20 years working in the spa industry around the world, Michelle launched Indulge as a luxury mobile spa in Queenstown eight years ago. While the response from visiting clients was overwhelmingly positive, it was locals who shaped the next chapter. “I realised that for many locals, home isn’t always the best place to truly switch off,” she explains. “Life is busy, noisy and full. I wanted to create a calm, accessible sanctuary where everything is taken care of for you.” That intention is felt the moment you walk through the door. The space is warm, grounding and intentionally quiet - designed to calm the nervous system before a treatment even begins. From there, every detail matters. Indulge therapists are trained in a very specific way. Each movement, pressure point and transition is purposeful, considered and consistent. “I’m extremely particular,” says Troon. “The placement of each touch, the pressure, the flow - it’s all intentional. That’s how we deliver treatments that feel tailored, yet predictably exceptional, every single time.”

deeply hands-on facial known for its extensive massage work paired with powerful, active products and advanced skin technology. It’s a treatment that delivers visible results while allowing the mind to fully let go. For the body, the Muscle Release Massage blends the precision of remedial work with the slow, grounding flow of a luxury spa massage - easing tension while restoring a sense of balance and ease. Clients leave feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and nurtured - as though, for a moment, there was nothing else to think about or manage. More than a one-off indulgence, Indulge encourages regular self-care through tailored skin and massage memberships, making it easier for locals to prioritise their physical and mental wellbeing long-term. “Having a scheduled time where it’s just about you isn’t a luxury - it’s essential,” says Troon. “It’s something to look forward to, and it should be a regular part of life.” For those seeking a place to slow down, reset and be genuinely cared for, Indulge Skin & Wellness offers something rare in Queenstown: a calm, intentional sanctuary designed entirely with locals in mind.

CRIMELINE

CELEBRATE NEW YEAR'S EVE THE WOO WAY

by Sue Fea

More Brewster rescues Rescuers have been called to the Mount Brewster and Brewster Track area twice in the past week. Three climbers had to be rescued near the summit of Mt Brewster on Saturday afternoon, 13 December after they became bluffed – stuck with cliffs above, below and on both sides, a Maritime NZ spokesperson says. They weren’t injured, but a rescue helicopter was sent with Aoraki/Mount Cook Alpine Cliff Rescue team members on board. “Upon arrival, the ACR team stood off as the rotor wash from the helicopter may have put the bluffed group at risk,” he says. Local mountain guides, who were already on the scene, volunteered to camp overnight with the party. “They accompanied them down the mountain the next day.” It was unclear where the trio were from. An Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter also airlifted a person from near Brewster Hut after a fall there just after 9am, Thursday, 11 December. A St John Ambulance spokesperson says the patient was flown to Aspiring Medical Centre in Wānaka. Their condition was unavailable.

Distraction - Multiple vehicle crash A 24-year-old Central Otago man was charged with operating a vehicle carelessly after a multiple vehicle crash on the Gibbston Highway at 11.20am Thursday, 11 December. Constable Amanda Shute says the driver of one of the vehicles became distracted by a noise in his vehicle. “As he has begun looking for the source of the noise a pair of earmuffs he was wearing on his head allegedly pushed his hat down obstructing his vision,” Shute says. “He has allegedly veered into the opposite lane and collided with a wing mirror of one vehicle and then into a second vehicle.” The man will appear in the Queenstown District Court on 30 January.

Singaporean woman crashes The same day a 27-year-old Singaporean woman was issued with an infringement notice after allegedly losing control of her vehicle and crashing through a windy section of the Glenorchy Road, flipping the vehicle on its side, just before 6.30pm, Shute says.

Distractions lead to disaster - Police out in force Police are urging Christmas holiday motorists to keep phones and other distractions in a place where drivers can’t be tempted, like the back seat, to be patient, stick to the speed limit and not take risks. “Distractions can lead to disaster,” Sergeant Dylan Hannah-Jones says. “Use your Bluetooth and wait until you’re parked before checking your messages. Speakerphone is not hands-free. “This holiday season is about enjoying happy times with your family and friends, not lamenting the loss of a loved one, or your driver’s licence,” he says. “The speed limit is a limit not a target.” Police will consistently be out in force with breath testing checkpoints at all hours. “Drivers have a choice. Never drive if you’ve been drinking. If you’re unsure catch an Uber.”

Drink driving: Saturday, 13 December 25-year-old Queenstown man, 734mcg, Camp Street, 4.24am. Appeared in Queenstown District Court Monday, 15 December, pleaded guilty. Fined $750 and disqualified 6 months. 34-year-old Queenstown man, 503mcg, Gorge Road, 10.15pm. Court 27 February 2026. 69-year-old Southland man, 469mcg, Glenorchy-Queenstown Road, 9.28pm. Court 30 January 2026. A 47-year-old Southland man was also charged with driving while disqualified and had his vehicle impounded for 28 days when stopped at 9pm on Friday, 12 December.

COMMUNITY NOTES When Christmas Feels Hard: How to Create a Season That Still Feels Meaningful by Katherine Froggatt, Health & Wellness Coach

Christmas is often painted as the season of joy, but this year many families are carrying a quieter load. Rising unemployment, higher living costs, and tightening household budgets have made the lead-up to Christmas feel heavier than usual. Recent reports show New Zealand’s unemployment rate has climbed to 5.3 percent, with around 160,000 people out of work, and household living costs have risen 2.4 percent over the past year. For families already stretched, the increase is much sharper. One in four New Zealanders now say they are finding it difficult to manage financially, and 70 percent report worrying about money weekly or even daily. These numbers remind us that if you’re feeling under pressure this Christmas, you are far from alone. A simpler Christmas is not a lesser Christmas. With intention and honesty, it can become one of the most connected seasons your whānau shares. Start with Open Communication Talking about money can feel uncomfortable, especially when Christmas carries so many traditions and emotions. But clear communication often brings immediate relief. Have the conversation early and set expectations together. A gentle place to begin might be, “Can we plan a simpler Christmas this year so we can focus on feeling relaxed and connected?” Children cope better with consistency than silent hopes or lastminute surprises. Naming your reality without shame gives your family safety, not scarcity.

Make Experiences the Golden Rule When budgets are tight, shifting from material gifts to shared experiences can be transformative. Memories last far longer than anything unwrapped. Think lake days, board games, bushwalks, or a backyard picnic. Younger children thrive on play and presence. Experiences also support emotional regulation, helping ease stress for everyone.

If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available throughout the holiday period in Aotearoa New Zealand: • Need to talk? Free call or text 1737 any time. • Lifeline: 0800 543 354 or free text 4357. • Depression Helpline: 0800 111 757.

Be Fully Present Presence becomes the real gift when finances are stretched. Slow the pace, create pockets of calm, and give your attention freely. Put phones away for an hour, cook together, or share stories at the table. For children sensing tension at home, emotional presence offers security and belonging. Reframe Traditions Traditions evolve. This year may look different, but different doesn’t mean “less than.” Return to the heart of Christmas: connection, generosity of spirit, and community. Light a candle for loved ones, share handwritten notes, or gather for a gratitude moment before the meal. These rituals cost little yet leave a lasting imprint. If this Christmas feels increasingly difficult and you need someone to walk alongside you, get in touch and let’s have a chat. Book here: katherinefroggatt.co.nz/claritycall

Childhood: Give a Kid Wheels, Not Another Screen by Amanda Robinson at The Lightfoot Initiative

Biking is one of life’s great joys because once you’re confident on two wheels you have opportunities. Biking teaches balance, risk, independence and resilience. All the things we say we want for our kids, then quietly design out of their lives. Fewer children are learning to ride than a generation ago. In New Zealand, car ownership is a rite of passage, and we lead the world in it. Have we considered the consequences? Streets that once belonged to kids now belong to traffic. The slow creep of 4WDs has replaced scraped knees and shouted goodbyes as kids hoon off to school on their bikes. To be fair, in Queenstown traffic often crawls slowly enough that you can sail past it on a bike, which says a lot about both our congestion and our missed opportunities. For decades, the Wakatipu Toy Library has been a quiet backbone of childhood opportunity. For many local kids, their first wheels came not from a shop, but from the Toy Library. Trikes, balance bikes, pedal bikes, scooters and other wonderfully strange two-or-three-wheeled contraptions with no obvious purpose except fun. All of them helped kids build confidence before the moment that really matters, owning a bike that is theirs alone. However, that success has created a problem. The Toy Library bike fleet has grown so large and is so well used that maintaining it has become too much for a volunteer-run organisation.

Rather than letting those bikes slowly stop pedalling, the Toy Library has gifted the fleet of 50 kid’s bikes to OneBike. We see it as 50 chances at freedom. Lightfoot is creating a dedicated space for these bikes at the OneBike Hub in Frankton. We’ll have a kids’ coordinator to match bikes to children and make sure they are safe, fitted and ready to ride. What we need now is help from the community to finish the job. Our Give the Gift of Wheels campaign is partway to its $20,000 goal. If you believe kids should have access to bikes, not just screens and back seats, we’re asking you to donate. Because a childhood without wheels is a missed opportunity. And as a community I know we can do better than that. Donate at: givealittle.co.nz/ cause/give-the-gift-ofwheels-this-christmas-fund

Wakatipu specialist rescuers called in for Sabre Peak tragedy by Sue Fea Wakatipu Alpine Cliff Rescue Team members’ specialist skills were called in at 5.30pm on Saturday, 13 December, to help locate the two Australianbased climbers who died on Sabre Peak in Fiordland National Park. “Initially a Heli Otago rescue helicopter was dispatched after a personal locator beacon was activated by another party in the vicinity,” team coordinator Russ Tilsely says. “They did a search of the area and were able to locate one of the climbers about 2 metres to 3 metres down a small crevasse but couldn’t see the other,” he says. “Due to the nature of the terrain, they ascertained that it would be a job for us so that’s when we were called.” Tilsley says they flew in with Heliworks from Queenstown at 6.30pm but couldn’t get in as the cloud had closed in. “It was impossible to get a visual on the area.” They flew back in on Sunday at 6am and found the first climber then after a short search found the other.

“It was technical and difficult due to the nature of the terrain, steep snow and rock faces, not easy access, weather issues, deep crevasses, with multiple technical rope lowers and raisers,” Tilsley says. He paid tribute to the two local pilots involved. “As on most of these jobs we couldn’t do it without the pilots. Great flying from Craig Lyders at Heliworks backed up by ‘Snow’ Mullally from Southern Lakes Helicopters Te Anau in challenging terrain and weather conditions.” Tilsley says the north buttress of Sabre Peak, near the Homer Tunnel, is “one of the classic alpine routes in NZ. It’s very popular with climbers from NZ and overseas.” Police investigations were continuing and no further comment could be made, but Police named the two climbers, 17 December, as 28-year-old Connor Scott McKenzie, a dual citizen of New Zealand and Canada, and 23-year-old Australian Tanmay Shetankumar Bhati. Their deaths have been referred to the Coroner.

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN

Arts+Culture Angus Watson’s annual exhibition in January by Jessica Allen

Angus Watson has been painting colourful artworks for 35 years now. His annual exhibition will take place in January at his home studio in Dalefield, showcasing his vibrant striking artworks. He loves to welcome people to come see his art and is looking forward to another year. He enjoys playing with colours, putting one beside another to bounce off and make a stronger effect. Often these effects are surprising even to himself, saying that generally his hand is ahead of his brain. There’ll be about 25 works on display of an array of different subjects – from animals and people to landscapes and everything in between.

“I painted all my life really, but one woman in particular wanted me to paint her hens for her, then someone else wanted something else, and now I’ve done all sorts of different things,” Watson says. Before he turned his passion into his fulltime profession, Watson owned an audio-visual museum in Queenstown on the Gold Rush. It included listening to a soundtrack as you wandered through the exhibition. In one of the rooms, you’d walk into a ‘gold mine’ with all the sound effects you’d expect to hear. “I always found them interesting – and I did that for 12 years. People would come in and they would go through the show, and get their photo taken in old-fashioned clothes.” When he was running the museum, he was still painting as often as he could, and now does so daily. The colours he uses are always inspired by the subjects – his biggest advice is that you don’t have to be afraid of colours, just jump in. “I often go to a place and do a quick sketch of what I’ve seen and then I take a photo, and then I come back and make the colours up. When I paint the real colours, they don’t look very good.”

He’s spent a fair bit of time in Fiji and Samoa painting the beauty around him – although he admits sometimes there’d be more holidaying and less painting happening. While he’s always looking for subjects, he explains that the subject is just something to hang a bit of colour on.

“I’m always working towards the Christmas edition — it gives me a sense of purpose” “A colour, just by being a colour, makes you either feel good or something, so you’re halfway there before you even put an image on. I know various colour combinations work.” His paintings are all around the world, sold online or to visitors passing by the gallery and then taking the work back home. He loves being an artist in Queenstown though – people on holiday are in the right frame of mind to buy art, and it’s a lovely reminder of happy times. He paints year round, the exhibition is always on his mind. “When people come in, they generally hone in on the ones that are the favourites, because there’s something about them. You just keep on doing it. I’m always working towards the Christmas edition – it gives me a sense of purpose.” The annual exhibition will run from Saturday, 3 January until Wednesday, 13 January from 10am – 5pm daily at Watson’s home studio, 355 Littles Road. If you’d like to check out more of his work, order a 2026 calendar, or learn more about the exhibition, head to anguswatson.com

My Life story

by Sue Fea

REVEREND CLAY PETERSON Backbone to the Brazilian community Aside from the hustle and bustle of Queenstown’s tourism buzz, a humble South American man – the spiritual backbone of the local Brazilian community, is quietly beavering away, ensuring the wellbeing of our migrant community. Reverend Clay Peterson is a kind of spiritual DIY guy for Queenstown’s South American community. From preaching and leading Global Community Church music and singing, to translating and counselling local South American couples and families through the struggles of setting up a new life with a new language, Clay has it covered. You won’t catch him bragging, but Clay, who just turned 51, has performed before crowds of up to one million in Brazil. He’s performed around the world, as a guitarist and vocalist in Latin America’s largest Christian band, hugely popular in Brazil having sold over 15 million albums. Prior to emigrating to New Zealand in 2011, Clay and his wife, Graziela, travelled the world performing in Europe, Japan, Brazil and Indonesia, where the large worship band packed out a stadium of 30,000 to 40,000 people. Before The Throne’ (Diante do Trono) was very well known, founded in 1997 in his home city, Belo Horizonte. “I was only a small part of it, but had the privilege of all that travel,” he says. The youngest of four boys, Clay’s music career all began after the “simple gift of a guitar from my father, aged 10”. “Music wasn’t in my family, but I’d play air guitar and sing, and my parents saw something different in me.” His dad was his hero – a senior police officer, who became a private bodyguard to the rich and famous, who worked long hours. “I so treasured the times he took me to his workplace for the day as a boy in that beautiful uniform. I saw how respected and valued he was.” Sadly, his dad passed away in November last year, Clay mid-flight home as he passed. “I was leading his funeral less than 28 hours after the call. That was extremely hard being so far away

Clay and Graziela in Israel during their singing travel days - 2007

from family and going back without my wife and kids while I was grieving,” he says. He stayed four weeks to support his widowed mum. “Language is the main challenge for us migrants, but even harder is coping with the distance from close family,” he says. “When you lose someone like that it’s the biggest pain.”

“I wanted to go somewhere and help people and I saw a real need here.” A shy kid, Clay was encouraged into drama – ironically taking on the priest’s role in the school production, shot dead, tomato sauce splashed under his shirt. By his teens, music and drama had become “an instrument for life” and at 15 he was awarded second in his whole school. “I had to raise the flag for my state - a moving moment.” By 1999 he’d met Graziela, who was performing in a Christian band. “From a young age I played and sang at our Baptist church of 50,000 people. They’re big in Brazil.” At 20 Clay went to Bible College to study a Bachelor of Theology: “I wanted to search the truth, the Scriptures, and be sure exactly what I believed in,” he says. Then in 2011 he felt drawn to missions and NZ where his brother and sister in law had settled in Queenstown in 2008. “I wanted to go somewhere and help people and I saw a real need here.”

Multi-tasking minister - Clay sharing his talents

had to cope with the tears. She was doing very well at school in Brazil and came to a school not understanding anyone,” he says. “But Arrowtown School did a fantastic job. We were all extremely well supported and loved.” Clay’s biggest challenge was overcoming the language barrier to deliver up to three weekly church messages with something meaningful, at times needing to lead three local churches on a Sunday, and the music and worship. In April last year he took on major responsibility for the rest of the church becoming interim senior minister, when wonderful mentor, senior minister Reverend Ian Guy left. With the sale of the iconic St Andrew’s site downtown and the new Frankton location, Clay’s kept busy with three Sunday services and music. He’s seen an increase in couples and families seeking counselling support, something he trained in at college. “We dealt with the peak of mental health issues during the pandemic. That was very tough for all ministers in town. “Very small issues can become complicated when you don’t have the tools. I try to help couples find understanding and forgiveness, mediate and listen,” he says. “We love singing carols about the coming of Baby Jesus at Christmas, but I remind people he came and went to the cross to give us forgiveness – that’s the message of Christmas.” Clay welcomes all to the Christmas services at St Margaret’s Church, Frankton – Christmas Eve – 6pm; Christmas Day – 9.30pm

He’d become associate pastor at Wakatipu Presbyterian Church by 2014, working with the local Global Church community, through a partnership with his home church in Brazil. In 2018 he was inducted as a NZ minister. Moving to Queenstown – a whole new language and culture, was extremely hard for his two kids, especially his six-year-old daughter. “We

Ph: 03 409 2800 enquiries@qmg.co.nz Hopefully everyone is safely backjobfi on, x.co.nz and enjoying, the water. Bungs tight, moving at the correct speeds, buttoned up safely in a PFD (personal floatation device), aware of the forecast, and carefully placed on beaches. Remember a Coastguard membership could be useful in some of the unplanned unfortunate unexpected boating events that occur. Knowing your boat and your area is essential, and getting more nautical knowledge and experience is always wise. Boat insurance may cover your boat, but it doesn’t save your lives. Check out the local knowledge and sign up for some courses. Talk to local operators and drop into the coastguard for some advice. Remember to give way to sail/non powered craft and give way to everything on your right for other powered vessels. It promises to be a busy summer on the water, watch out for people and don’t forget the sunscreen.
