LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN Giving Through The Year As the festive season approaches, many of us are preparing to gather with whānau, share meals, and celebrate together. But for some families in our community, Christmas brings added pressure, with worry about how to put food on the table or afford gifts for their children. It’s a timely reminder that generosity, compassion, and community matter more than ever. Life in Aotearoa is getting harder for many, and here in the Whakatipu we’re seeing it too. Behind the beauty and the buzz of tourism, there are families and individuals quietly struggling to make ends meet. Food insecurity isn’t just an issue for big cities anymore; it’s right here in our community. This is why the Salvation Army will be opening a Social Supermarket in Frankton. We’re moving away from pre-packed food parcels. People will be able to choose their own groceries, just like others do when they shop at the supermarket but without the stress of cost. It’s about dignity, choice, and care, helping families plan meals that work for them. For us, food is often the first step. It opens the door to provide wrap around support for families and individuals including, budgeting support, counselling, and practical help that gives people confidence and hope in managing their lives and decision making. This isn’t just about meeting immediate needs; it’s about creating a space where people feel respected, welcomed, and supported. Queenstown is an amazing place to live, but the reality is that many families are struggling right now. The price of housing, electricity, petrol, groceries, create a real pressure for families. People tell us they’re working two jobs just to make ends meet, and even then, it’s a struggle. Our Social Supermarket is part of a bigger vision. Our “Under One Roof” project, will bring food support and other community services together at our new Frankton site, alongside other social services. Because real change happens when we work together. This model is already making a difference in other parts of the country. It is reducing food waste, improving nutrition, and giving people the power to make choices that suit their lives. Most importantly, it builds connection and reminds us that everyone deserves to be fed with dignity. We’re so grateful for the $100,000 grant from Impact100 Whakatipu (part of 45 South Foundation) that’s helping make this possible. Together, we can make sure no one in the Whakatipu goes hungry or feels forgotten. Food security isn’t just about meals; it’s about giving people the tools and confidence to thrive. This Christmas, the Salvation Army has been providing food hampers and gifts to those in need, which helps create a special Christmas for someone who might otherwise go without.
