Mactodd Community Charitable Trust encouraging positive change with its grants fund
It is exciting to be at the helm of the Mactodd Community Charitable Trust as it enters a new era – its formal grants funding application process. We recently launched it to the community, and it’s been a surreal and somewhat nerve-wracking step, as over the years, we have made relatively anonymous ad hoc donations to worthwhile and impactful initiatives. These donations have amounted over $2 million so far.
I’m writing in this column to draw attention to our Trust and to let people know that applications are currently open for grants between $50,000$150,000, as well as $5,000-$50,000. Our goal is to donate between $200,000-$300,000 within this application round. And for those who miss out, we intend to do it all over again next year, and the year after that.
I’ve been involved in charitable endeavours for many years. You could say it’s in my DNA. I’ve sat on charitable boards, chaired meetings of community leaders, and held the bucket at fundraising events. When you’re involved in charities, you’re involved in the community, and one of the benefits of this is the great people you meet along the way and the connections you make. You also truly get a feel for what is unique and special about the community. This applies to myself and my fellow trustees of the Trust – we have all been involved in charities throughout our careers and have seen firsthand the needs of our community, faced funding gaps and made decisions we would have preferred not to make.
With the Trust, we have an opportunity to help community groups and charities or those with a fantastic idea that they need financial assistance to implement. At Mactodd, our firm values are Accessible, Collaborative, Innovative and Diverse, and they shape how we work and who we are. They also apply to this Trust – we want it to be accessible for our diverse community, and for the funds to help support and uplift innovative and collaborative work and ideas.
Over recent years, the Trust has grown to a size that enables simultaneous growth alongside regular gifting. Sitting at $17 million, the long-term goal of the Trust is growth. A fitting goal, in times of unprecedented growth across our district. We have this goal because with growth we can gift more, be relevant for longer, and effectively address the needs of the Southern Lakes District for generations to come.
If you have an initiative or project that will help create a stronger, healthier, and more connected community, we want to hear from you. Get your application in by 31 December: www.mactodd.co.nz/communitycharitabletrust.

Course Records Tumble as Jack Moody and Bara Styblova Win 2025 Queenstown Marathon Titles
First time champions have claimed the 2025 New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Queenstown Marathon Presented by ASICS titles, with both runners making their decisive move late in the race.
More than 13,000 registered participants tackled the world’s most beautiful marathon across four distances, the New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Marathon, La Roche Posay Half Marathon, United Airlines 10km and Kids Run.
Auckland-based professional triathlete Jack Moody broke the tape in 2:25:02, posting a new men’s course record by more than a minute. Timothy Jorgensen finished second over four minutes behind, with Blair Mcwhirter rounding out the podium in 2:32:10.
“I’m relived there wasn’t a bike or swim beforehand,” said Moody. “I haven’t run a pure marathon since I was about 21 years old so to just get out there and enjoy running is awesome. It’s been a tough year, so it’s really cool. What a course to go and do it on, great atmosphere, it’s a pretty special event.”
In the women’s marathon Czech runner Bara Styblova upset the prerace favourite and six-time winner Hannah Oldroyd to win this year’s Queenstown Marathon on her debut over the distance. Styblova crossed the finish line in 2:48:31 – a new women’s course record – less than a minute ahead of Oldroyd in second. Mindy Kaufman completed the podium in 2:54:24.
“I’m exhausted, but very happy because it was my first ever marathon and I was trying to just finish it – it went really well,” said Styblova. “I think I took the lead with 3km to the finish line. I tried to speed up toward the end but there was a strong wind.”
In the La Roche Posay Half Marathon, Tom Moulai returned to the race with success, this time taking out the win in 1:10:04. Four minutes behind Moulai was Jye Spriggs in 1:14:11, with Nick Roberts a further minute behind in third.
The women’s half marathon Becky Aitkenhead took the win in 1:17:14 more than three minutes clear of Maia Flint in second. Saskia Cosgrove-Drayton completed the podium in 1:22:43.
In the United Airlines 10km, Switzerland’s Ers Schöneberger – who only flew into Queenstown from Thailand last night and signed up for the race on arrival – ran 33:37 to win the men’s race by nearly a minute. Sascha Mitchell claimed the women’s title in 38:27.

15 dealt with for drink driving – Very disappointing
Police are ‘very disappointed’ to have netted 15 alleged drink drivers at various levels in just six days around the district this past week, also attending a number of crashes, involving young, inexperienced drivers – Kiwis and from overseas. Otago Lakes Road Policing Sergeant Bruce Martin says a 22-year-old old visiting overseas driver allegedly failed to give way to an oncoming vehicle on State Highway 6 at the Crown Range turnoff at 9.45am yesterday, 12 November, resulting in a three-vehicle crash. She allegedly failed to give way to an oncoming vehicle off the State Highway when turning right onto the Crown Range Rd, Martin says. Her rental vehicle then allegedly collided with the oncoming vehicle and a second vehicle waiting at the ‘Stop’ sign at the intersection. The young woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to Lakes District Hospital. There were no other injuries, and the matter was still being investigated.
Martin says 15 alleged drink drivers - nine of whom have been charged and will appear in court, was “unacceptable” and those numbers “won’t be tolerated” moving into the busy Christmas summer period.
A 29-year-old Alexandra man allegedly clocked 137km/hr, allegedly blew 733mcg and was in breach of a zero-alcohol licence after being stopped in a tricky part of the narrow Kawarau Gorge near Roaring Meg at10.40pm on Saturday, 8 November, Martin says. He will appear in the Alexandra District Court.
A 42-year-old Queenstown man was arrested for refusing to accompany Police and refusing an officer’s request for blood on Stalker Road at 4am last Wednesday, 5 December.
He had his licence suspended for 28 days and will appear in the Queenstown District Court tomorrow (14 November).
A 29-year-old local man allegedly blew 855mcg and allegedly admitted to Police that he was disqualified from driving when stopped on Ladies Mile, Frankton, just after 5.15am on Saturday, 8 November. His vehicle was impounded for 28 days, and he appeared in Queenstown District Court, remanded to reappear on 12 December.
21-year-old local, allegedly blew 473mcg after allegedly being observed speeding and driving erratically, Suburb Street, 3.24am, 9 November. Maritn says the other six drivers stopped were dealt with by infringement notice.
Young inexperienced drivers crash
A 19-year-old local man was charged with driving dangerously causing injury after a single vehicle crash on Gorge Road just before 2pm last Thursday, 6 November. Constable Amanda Shute says the driver was allegedly travelling more than the posted 60km/hr speed limit when the left side of the vehicle crossed the left-hand fog line and hit loose gravel. He allegedly lost control, and it left the road, rolling multiple times. He will appear in the Queenstown District Court on 1 December.
Martin says there were also several non-injury crashes in the region, all involving young, inexperienced drivers – two overseas drivers on the Lindis Pass and a young, local driver, who appeared to have taken a speed signed corner on the Glenorchy Road too fast and lost control.
Martin urges drivers to concentrate on what they, and others, are doing. “It only takes a moment of inattention. Drive cautiously, don’t speed and be prepared for the unexpected.
“If you’re travelling at 100km/hr the average person takes 2.5 seconds to react. You travel at 27.7m in one second when driving at that speed so you’ll have travelled 69.25m – half the length of a football field, by the time you react to whatever has happened.”

Bungs in?
Surprisingly often forgotten with disastrous consequences. Before you put your boat in the water this season take your bung out and give it and the hole a good clean with an old toothbrush. You need to clean out sand and grit that accumulate in the threads as the bilge water spills out. Pay attention to the bung’s seal. If it has perished or has indentations, then replace it. It is a tiny expense compared to dealing with a slow leak...
Be safe out there.
Santa’s snowy return to Minus 5° ICE BAR COMMUNITY NOTES
Warm hugs, smiling faces and plenty of sparkle will make for the jolliest of times with Santa Claus’s magical appearance at Queenstown’s Minus 5° ICE BAR next month.
Thanks to a special festive request from the team at Future Hospitality Group to North Pole HQ, the Ice Bar will once again transform into Santa’s Grotto – a winter wonderland with a purpose - to raise much-needed funds for Wakatipu Plunket.
Minus 5° ICE BAR has been welcoming children and their parents to its twinkling festive wonderland for the past 14 years. Families love to visit Santa and his elves in his natural frozen home-away-from-home, just like the North Pole. Families can visit Santa on Saturday and Sunday, 6 and 7 December, from 10am to 2pm to take photos with the jolly man in red and create heartwarming memories.
For a $10 donation per family, each will have a personal and magical moment with Santa, and face painting is available for a gold coin donation. There is no need to book, as a ticketed system on site each day means families don’t have to stand in line while they wait.
Queenstown Plunket representative Krista Baker says money raised helps keep the doors open, lights on, and milk in the fridge, bringing young families together in a safe space where children can play, and parents can connect.
“Minus 5° ICE BAR has done so much over the years in raising over $30,000 for families, money that stays here in the Wakatipu,” she says.
“Santa’s Grotto is a beautiful thing for families to have, a tradition that so many of our families love.”
The heartwarming tradition is also a favourite with Ice Bar staff and owners Future Hospitality Group.
“Bring your loved ones along and help us spread some holiday cheer in the build up to Christmas,” says Future Hospitality Group co-owner Bert
Haines. “We’re proud to have donated 100% of proceeds to Plunket over the past 13 years and we can’t wait to do it all over again.”
Santa’s Grotto is made possible thanks to generous sponsors Print Central Queenstown, Lakes Weekly Bulletin, Steamer Wharf Queenstown, The Warehouse Queenstown and MediaWorks.
Lakes Weekly gives community organisations in Queenstown Lakes the chance to address our readers directly though our Community Notes page. If you’d like to take part, email Jess at info@qmg.co.nz
Hobby goldminer and American tramper rescued
by Sue Fea
A local hobby goldminer in his 30s was airlifted to hospital by the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter late on Sunday afternoon (9 November), after suffering a seizure late morning while panning up Twelve Mile Creek on the Mount Crichton Loop Track.
The Wakatipu Alpine Cliff Rescue Team was called in to help after St John Ambulance staff and Wakatipu Search and Rescue volunteers needed assistance to winch the man out and into the waiting helicopter, Alpine Cliff Rescue team leader Karl Johnson says.
Another SAR spokesman says a St John Ambulance crew arrived around midday, Sub-Alpine SAR an hour later, followed by the Alpine Cliff Rescue volunteers in the Rescue Helicopter.
Johnson says a number of passers by ran out to cellphone coverage to raise the alarm. “They were great. They also ran out to get more gear from the ambulance.”
The man, who’d been injured when he fell, was with several friends and had been mining in a gorge area.
The crews all worked together to get him onto a stretcher and Johnson says they then used ropes to winch him from the riverbed up a steep 15m bank to the waiting helicopter. “The Search and Rescue guys and paramedics spent time packaging him ready to be winched out by helicopter,” he says. “We all had to cross the river to get to him and it was at higher levels due to all the recent rain.”
A St John spokesperson says the man was flown to Lakes District Hospital with moderate injuries.
A young American woman in her 20s had to be rescued when she became trapped beneath the road to Macetown while tramping late on Saturday afternoon (8 November).
A Wakatipu Search and Rescue spokesperson says the woman was well prepared and was tramping the Big Hill-Hayes Creek Macetown Road Track Loop. “The Arrow River was quite high, but she’d crossed it safely then couldn’t find the track above the steep bank to get up onto the Macetown Road,” he says. “She didn’t feel safe to cross back over the river so alerted emergency services via her iPhone, which had a built-in satellite service,” he says. Police called the SAR crew who made the 40-minute drive in then made their way down from the road to rescue the woman. “It was quite a tricky trip with several river crossings and the river in quite full flow, he says. “She’d done all the right things, researched her route and was really well equipped, knowing how to cross a river safely,” he says. “She was just a little inexperienced in terms of New Zealand and that part of the track is quite tricky.”

Ivy Box celebrates ten years
The Ivy Box is celebrating a big milestone this month — ten years in business! They’re hosting an event on Friday to commemorate, showcasing new art by past and present artists, music, and nibbles. All art lovers are encouraged to come along and join in.
Founder and artist Lynda Hensman opened the doors in 2015 after wanting to create a space for herself and other contemporary artists to create and display their work.
“There was nowhere at the time for passionate, contemporary New Zealand artists to share their work,” says Hensman.
"I’m proud to say that the Ivy Box has been a venue for authentic contemporary art."
“Creating art for me is a form of true expression. Usually, there’s a lot of emotion in painted into what I create, hence the expression: be true to yourself and ‘create outside of the square’.
“All of the artwork shared at the Ivy Box is created by artists who are true to their unique selves.”
Gallery manager Gemma McCabe explains that they display art from artists around New Zealand and a few Queenstown-based ones, too.
“We’ve asked some of our past artists to bring in new work, so we have a gallery full of some beautiful pieces, more than we normally would,”
McCabe says. “What’s distinctive about the Ivy Box is just creating outside the square and being unique.”
Artist Peter Atkin will come from Te Awamutu, while locals Rachel Harper-Dibley and fashion and jewellery designer Jane Sutherland will be in attendance, too. ‘Veteran’ Ivy Box exhibitors Robin Brisker and Antoinette Beck will also be there, while Jen Heads will showcase her work at the Queenstown gallery for the first time. Other artists that are showcasing and will be in attendance include Christine Maynard, Karl Daniela, and of course, Lynda Hensman.
Art will range from sculptural art using woven venetian blinds to painted canvases to oxidised copper wall hangs, ranging from contemporary to abstract – all pieces will be available to purchase.
“We’re really excited to bring everyone together – people who love art, as well as our past artists and any supporters of the Ivy Box along the way. We really just want to raise a glass and say a massive thank you to everyone that has supported us.”
Tucked away just around from Queenstown Gardens, the gallery is housed in the town’s original butcher’s shop and had a 1970’s-style bungalow on top. In 2021 it was restored and extended to include a modern gallery and artists’ residence. Lynda worked closely with architects to ensure the old stonework was preserved and that the climbing plants, which give the Ivy Box its name, were able to grow back.
“We’ve had ten truly inspiring years here,” says Hensman.
“I’m proud to say that the Ivy Box has been a
venue for authentic contemporary art that’s created by New Zealand artists who have a particular dedication to their creative soul.
“I’ve been an artist all my life, and ‘outside of the square’ creativity that comes from the heart has always been really important to me. I’m thrilled that the Ivy Box has become a home and community hub for this kind of art in Queenstown – and to reach ten years is a special privilege which I’m looking forward to celebrating.”
You can join in on the celebrations at their event on Friday, 21 November, from 4.30pm – 7.30pm. Otherwise, the works will continue to be on display from 10am – 2pm, Sunday to Thursday at The Ivy Box, 134 Park Street, Queenstown.

Possessing more than 50grams of a Class A drug in China – at that time the world’s leading meth producer, can earn the death penalty, Phil says. “It was all exported as the locals didn’t use it, so there was a lot of trying to convince Chinese Police to work with us, US and Australian Police, to see the benefit of stopping this,” he says. “We had to tread carefully if we had information regarding New Zealanders as we didn’t want them getting shot.”
Phil’s come close to that a few times himself, like the time a famous Kiwi drug dealer greeted him and other detectives at the top of his stairs with a sawn-off shotgun.
The transition to Queenstown as Otago Rural Area Commander in 1997 was quite a contrast –his first job investigating the illegal importation and release of the deadly Calicivirus used to kill rabbits in rural areas.
However, it was human population growth that presented the biggest challenge in Phil’s patch, and alcohol-fuelled offending.
That and the cold: “I got our officers all possumskin hats and got told off by headquarters and the uniform committee, but they went down a treat,” he grins. “The breath-testing devices wouldn’t always work as it was too cold.”
All a far cry from his happy Mt Albert upbringing, Phil and his teenage mates regulars at the Western Springs Speedway, where they enjoyed Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones.
Trentham training was like the military then. “We were all underage, but people sneaked a few beers into our very old barracks, empty bottles thrown into the ceiling which gave out under the weight of previous decades,” he grins.
“We had to form lines to suddenly protect the protestors from the crowd who’d come in from the bush areas for the game and weren’t happy.”
Bars were rough back then and 18-year-old Constable Phil would be sent in ahead, hustled and jostled by aggressive patrons. “Then I’d walk back through with the whole team policing unit behind me and point out ‘him’, ‘him’. It was poetic justice.”
Then there were the huge burly guys in the renowned K’ Road dance hall with no liquor licence. “My colleague was collecting up the bottles, and they were looking increasingly unhappy.” Team policing to the rescue again.
That year Phil spent three and a half months in hospital after his motorbike crashed over a 24m drop near Warkworth, lying seriously injured for 19 hours. “A Ministry of Works guy was having a pee above and I heard him whistling.”
He and wife of 46 years, Christine, took a year off to work in London pubs in 1980, again in 1987 running a backpackers’ hostel in Earl’s Court. Phil’s squad had the unusual task of defending the protestors not the players at the NZ Māori v Springboks game in Napier during the 1981 Springbok Tour. “We had to form lines to suddenly protect the protestors from the crowd who’d come in from the bush areas for the game and weren’t happy,” Phil says.
From 1983 until 1997 Phil worked for the Auckland CIB, working his way up to Detective Inspector, spending a year on the massive inquiry into the 1985 Rainbow Warrior bombing – the Greenpeace nuclear protest ship sunk by French Secret Service agents. Phil and another detective made the arrests after a call from a rental car company saying they thought the pair were in their office.
“He (Alain Mafart) was very cool when we said, ‘Come back to the station’,” Phil recalls. “He said, ‘What is it? Maybe a parking ticket?’ She (Domenique Prieur) was clearly nervous.” The pair were charged with manslaughter and sentenced to 10 years prison, mostly served on Hao Atoll.
Alcohol-fuelled crime was the biggest problem in Queenstown when Phil took over as area commander based here in 1997 - 24-hour licensing introduced during his watch. Working on two extremely sad inquiries after tragedies involving Police families was a most difficult time, so many staff impacted.
During happier times with the Diplomatic and Witness Protection Group in Wellington, Phil played minder to the likes of then US Vice President Joe Biden, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Prince William and Princess Kate.
The Jones’ arrived to their then home in China’s Guangzhou in 2020, after meeting their sons in Europe, to the shock of full Covid shutdowns. “We hunkered down before being repatriated home, all our belongings had to be left behind. It was fairly scary. We got back here and nobody was wearing masks. It was all really laid back.”
Now retired in Queenstown, Phil shares his experience sitting on the National Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority and is a Happiness House trustee.

QLDC Libraries Librarian Profile
Kia Ora!
Lakes Weekly Bulletin and Queenstown Lakes Libraries are profiling our librarians. This month we are profiling Lizzy, who is a Library Assistant at Arrowtown Library.
Tēnā koutou! I’m Lizzy, and I’ve been part of the Arrowtown Library team for the past year. Originally from the UK, I came to Queenstown in 2002 after studying English, music and education. I fell in love with the mountains and the lifestyle, and what was meant to be a short stop on my OE became home. What I love most about libraries is the sense of community; they’re places where everyone belongs. Books, to me, are a balm for the soul: they comfort, challenge, and connect us.
Book recommendations / recent reads:
The Guncle – Steven Rowley
A washed-up TV star unexpectedly becomes guardian to his niece and nephew. Equal parts hilarious and tender, it’s about grief, family, and learning to love life again.
Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine – Gail Honeyman
Funny and quietly heartbreaking, this novel follows Eleanor, a slightly awkward office worker whose world opens up through an unexpected friendship. Gail Honeyman writes with warmth and dry humour, exploring loneliness, resilience, and the small kindnesses that can change everything.
Brooklyn – Colm Tóibín
A quiet, beautiful story about love, home, and the pull between two worlds. Eilis Lacey leaves 1950s Ireland for a new life in New York, finding work, friendship, and a gentle kind of love — until news from home forces a painful choice. Honest, understated, and deeply moving.
A sweeping classic that follows Anna, a woman trapped in a loveless marriage whose affair with Count Vronsky sets off a chain of heartbreak across Russian high society. More than a love story, it’s about duty, desire, and the ways people try to live honestly. Despite its size, it feels alive and surprisingly modern.
@qldclibraries
Queenstown Lakes District Libraries
Outside of work, I love spending time with my family, playing the piano, and exploring this beautiful region. Music and reading are my favourite ways to unwind and recharge.
Cloud Atlas – David Mitchell
Six stories in one, each told in a different style — from a 19th-century sea voyage to a futuristic dystopia. Some connect, others stand alone, but all are bold, funny, and beautifully written. Even when it gets a bit too clever, it’s impossible to put down.
Exercised: The Science of Physical Activity, Rest and Health – Daniel Lieberman
A book that makes you rethink what you know about fitness. Lieberman, an evolutionary biologist with a great sense of humour, busts myths like “running wrecks your knees” or “exercise doesn’t help you lose weight.” He shows how our bodies were built to move naturally — and why the trick is finding movement you actually enjoy.
Anna Karenina – Leo Tolstoy
