Oh Queenstown, where every night is a Friday, every day is a Saturday and every morning is a Monday… What is to become of this jewel of the south? One of NZ’s ‘most exciting and beautiful destinations’ and the Southern Hemisphere’s premier adventure destination, where the rent and the cost of living is so high that local innovation is being stifled. What kind of future for Queenstown are we creating, when workers can’t afford to live here and local businesses can’t afford to operate? How sustainable is Queenstown when a large percentage of the visitors who come here are buying products that are made in their own country (quite probably with zero environmental concerns, by under-age workers in sweatshop conditions) to take back to their home country. If it has an NZ flag, a silver fern or some other Kiwiana emblem on it, it’s Kiwi, right? Wrong, so wrong, on so many levels. Home-grown innovation is being stifled by an influx of cheap, overseasmade products and suffocated by exorbitant rent and rates increases. We’re not California-based tech start-ups with investor angels who swoop into the local market and flout local laws or persuade the national government to change the laws to suit our operating model (looking at you, Uber) or not pay taxes because our fancy lawyers have us registered in the Bermuda Islands/ Ireland/ Panama. We live locally, we are part of this community, we pay our taxes in this country and we care about the unmitigated growth of Queenstown at all costs. We understand Queenstown and want build a positive, sustainable future for our home town in a way that no big-box, overseas-owned company ever will. But it’s hard and it gets harder each day. Eventually, all the owner-operators and small local businesses will give up and close only to be replaced by overseas-owned chain stores who can afford to have a loss-making store in Queenstown because they have 473 stores around the world selling the same product. Is this the homogenised Queenstown we really want? The mountains may still tower over us and invite us to play in/ on/ around them, the heart of the monster Matua may still cause the lake to rise and fall and the sunsets will still look amazing on the ‘Gram but look around closer and the environmental degradation will be a lot worse, the business innovation will have headed elsewhere and the Queenstown owned and run businesses will be as easy to find as a Moa. I like Steen Jones, but to be honest this mural looks like ANOTHER palm tree repeat for the instgram with no connection to the local feel or vibe.
Wouldn’t it have been way better to have a Kiwiborn graffiti artist (maybe some of the amazing talent emerging out of Dunedin, Chc) come and create a piece that actually talked to the town? Or the general area?

Reply From Creative Cows Thanks for your feedback on the first piece of art in Cow Lane - we are happy to take the good with the bad! Art is totally subjective so we are not surprised some people love it while others aren’t so sold: that’s just the nature of it! Steen was one of 21 artists who submitted to be a part of this project and was chosen by a panel of five people with various backgrounds and vocations in consultation with the buildings owner and tenants. His experience, skill and ability to paint such a large wall - along with his obvious talent - scored him the job!
The aim is to brighten the Lane with art, not necessarily create a “Queenstown” theme... We have plenty of walls left to colour and have some great Kiwi and local artists in mind so watch this space! Each piece will be different and hopefully conjure predominantly positive vibes for the viewers. We sincerely love the first wall and think it is a massive improvement on the ageing brown paint that is has replaced. We would also like to thank everyone for their support and appreciation of Steen’s work - he had a blast here and could not believe the hospitality of our wee town so thanks!! Big love! QLDC Tennis Facilities With the old high school getting destroyed I thought I would check out the facilities out in Frankton. It has come to my attention however that it costs $20 an hour (!) to hire an outdoor tennis court at the events centre. Let’s face it, noone plays there, ever, quite understandably. They’re not exactly state-ofthe-art facilities, nor do they come with ballboys, an umpire or free bananas.
Perhaps if the council was to kindly reconsider the pricing, they could turn an annual revenue upwards of $0 on those tennis courts. Based on the reasoning that something is better than nothing, especially when it comes to money, please think again. Novak NotSoRich
Response From QLDC Thanks for the opportunity to respond. All of the Council’s sport and recreation facilities are available for casual use by the community as well as regular use by groups and clubs. Use does vary through the year in line with the traditional seasons for different sports. For example, the outdoor courts at Queenstown Events Centre (QEC) are available for netball and other sports as well as tennis. The peak rate (weekends and 4.00-9.00pm weekdays) for these courts is $20/hour. Council also offers an off-peak rate outside of these hours at $16/hour.
QLDC is currently working on masterplans for both QEC and Wanaka Recreation Centre. These will consider the development of all current and potential sites over the next 20 years and look to future-proof the district’s sport and recreation facilities beyond this in line with predicted population growth. Community engagement on these masterplans, and also a draft sport and recreation facilities strategy in conjunction with Central Otago District Council and Sport Otago, will launch in autumn so everyone can have their say.

Arguably were are already in crisis it just depends where in the world you live. For those on the left and most in the environmental movement, we have yet to face up to what this problem is asking, rapidly reducing fossil fuels and doing away with the consumer culture that has driven us to the threshold of complete collapse. We are now so far into this that only a transformation of society can give us a chance to hand over a world that might function for the next generation. The looming environmental crisis is not asking for a ‘personal response’. It requires collective action. Consumer culture and neoliberalism has made its way to Queenstown over the last few years, K-mart and house prices illustrate this well enough. This is why you are facing skepticism from the community and finding yourself arguing with certain sections that you probably didn’t expect. Your PR programme won’t work. If we take a step back and look at the wider world, in Dahr Jamails latest book, Dr Philip Stoddardask asks an interesting question about our inability to face what is happening. He remarks as he watches the White House rip apart measures to slow the race toward destruction, ‘what kind of morality allows them to ignore what is going to happen’. I think this extends across the board of mainstream politics. First, there will be people who seek to use this as an opportunity to profit under the guise of ‘sustainability’ and put eco in front of proposals, and second, there will be those on the front putting their bodies on the line trying to get governments to halt what seems like a certain catastrophe, which is why we a seeing tactics that Extinction Rebellion are pursuing. Rating: That’s a part of my life I won’t get back.
Where: Cromwell Racecourse Aerodrome, Cromwell When: Saturday 16th February Reviewer: Ch’i Bangs I’ve always been a repeat offender at this Cromwell based festival. A welcomed excuse to get out of Queenstown and scuff the dust with small-town folk while sipping along to the tunes of sublime regional music. This year there was nothing small about it. Big Fruit, BIG NOISE! River Range came into 2019 with guns and suns blazing. Everything seemed to be scaled up. Bigger stage, more kit, expensive tickets, VIP tents, organised beer lines, more PEOPLE! But you could still spot key Crompton personalities out supporting this day. Last year the race grounds were a plastic cup apocalypse, it was good to see RR splashing out to get the fancy sign written festie cups. Festival regular, Dancing Donald, would traditionally have space to grapevine along the front of the stage, this time, there was only room for wrist flicks! My review window was from 6pm to 12pm and there was talk of a solid Rock section from the organiser. On the stage, Left or Right. The guitarist had long hip length dreds and donned a hi vis singlet which I thought encapsulated the reggae-rock vibe perfectly. All three members sang in harmony about a “greeeyyyyy arrreeeea” to well-oiled crowd. The intermission DJ did well to keep the crowd moving while strums and kickdrums were getting checked one last time for the anticipated Wellington tough rock band – Beastwars.
I talked during the performance. It was mmmk. So good!! A gig to remember!
Deemed to be too heavy for some, they brought out the devil horns and showed that Cromwell may have a healthy satanic scene. The low rumbling dong dong bass and a pterodactyl screech from the frontman, brought me back to West Fest in Auckland. They were gooood – hair was down, wild and getting shaken all about but they probably played one song too many. The last slither of light was creeping away when the festival hype man on the mic announced to ‘get naked’ for Salmonella Dub. They hadn’t been in the central area since Rippon 2012! I was up skanking with a ‘Bride to Be’ to the popular roadie number “haaaaddddeeenouuugh… had eeenough” Brass in the corner, drums on a pedestal, Andrew Penman fiddling with multiple effects and a reggae tracksuit Rasta on the mic. I was whisked away before I had the chance to get funky with K-LAB – Real disappointed about missing that. How was it? Can someone please fill me in! I’m always going to say good things about River Range – I hold it dearly to my heart. It was quite rock driven and probably not everyone’s cuppah. Art News Theatre Masterclasses Local theatre group Remarkables Theatre has arranged two workshops for budding actors, with director, actor, tutor and musician John Gouge. The 2-day and 5-day Actors’ Playbook will include finding your voice, movement styles and thoughtful acting techniques. The 5-day workshop also includes the opportunity for participants to write and stage their own play. John Goudge has more than 20 years’ experience as a drama tutor and directed Remarkable Theatre’s highly successful production of Serial Killers in 2017. His Actors’ Playbook sessions are aimed at actors of all levels and are designed to prepare actors for work on the amateur or professional stage. The course begins on 13th April and spaces are limited. The 3-day workshops costs $175 and the 5-day $325. Discounts are available for Remarkable Theatre members. Christchurch-based songwriter Ben Woods and his group are embarking on a large-scale tour of New Zealand. Starting the tour in Otago, Ben will play at the Sherwood Hotel on 22nd February, supported by Queenstown muso Holly Hoo. That’s a double-first for Ben who says, he’s “always eager to play in new places with new people.” The former Salad Boy drummer branched out on his own last year after realising that he’d never taken the opportunity to work on a solo musical vision. He also played guitar for Christchurch favourites like Fran/Bar Group and Wurld Series, but quit all of his bands to focus on his own sound. He holed himself up with his computer for a few months and in October 2018, released his fuzz-pop debut ‘Lozenge’ with a quirky, DIY-style music video directed by Martin Sagadin, which gained praise throughout the blogosphere. Ben spent the latter part of last year recording an album at Dunedin’s Radio One with Steven John Marr (Doprah, Kane Strang), which is set to be released in 2019. “I like to write emotionally charged songs with hopes of having some sort of pop sensibility attached to them. Then I cover them in layers of strange sounds that I usually squeeze out of guitars or synthesisers. This show might stray from that somewhat and be a little more intimate and downbeat,” says Ben. “You can expect an intimate evening featuring Holly, who you all know well I’m sure. I’ll be there with my disposition for wordy melancholic pop songs and jangling guitars. I’ll be accompanied by my friends. We’re going to play with a more minimal set up than usual, so it’s going to be quite different to our usual. What We’re Into Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma Director and cinematographer Alfonso Cuarón’s reached back into his childhood to gain inspiration for this tear-jerking film. Dynamically shot in a pellucid black and white, its story follows two women: Cleo (played by Yalitza Aparicio), a young, live-in maid of Mixteco Mesoamerican heritage who works for Sofía (Marina De Tavira) and her troubled, upper-middle-class family in Mexico City. Their lives unravel and disaster ensues. Roma received rave reviews and was (a little controversially) funded by Netflix.

“Grow the sport” is the maxim used by New Zealand disc golfers. But what is disc golf? This surreptitious yet magnetic sport that is taking the world by storm? Disc Golf participation across New Zealand - and, in truth, the world over - has been escalating in in an exponential manner over the last few years. If you live in Queenstown, no doubt you know of the notorious disc golf course that lies nestled in the spectacular Queenstown Gardens. What you may not know is that this particular course is, in fact, the oldest fixed course in New Zealand, and is considered by many the parent course to the disc golf movement in New Zealand. But, truly, what is disc golf? Well, as the name implies, the sport’s rules and scoring mechanics are derived from traditional golf. Except that rather than using a traditional club and golf ball, players cast frisbees (or “Discs” as they’re more correctly termed) about a course from “tee pad” to metal chained baskets. But the differences do not end there. For starters, Disc Golf is almost universally free to play. Since 1996, a very privileged and unique event has taken place in the Queenstown Gardens: The Queenstown Classic Disc Golf Tournament. In 2019, on the 2nd - 3rd March, this epic tournament is about to take place for the 24th year running, making it the longest running, fixed location tournament in New Zealand. Originally instituted by the legendary James “The Jaguar” Smithells, the Queenstown Classic is an event not to be missed by proponents of the sport. Competitors from all over New Zealand - occasionally, the world - will descend upon Queenstown to pit themselves against the best in the sport for, not only tour points and prestige, but a chance at winning one of the grand prizes up for grabs - a voucher for a helicopter flight with The Helicopter Line, a company which has been the very generous primary sponsor of the Queenstown Classic for many years.
