Wilding Conifers – Complete elimination or control? As a semi-retired forester I have to disagree with the stance adopted by the national wilding conifer clearance groups. Millions of dollars are sought from various agencies, local authorities and Government to get rid of this pest plant. Wilding conifers have proven commercial value. I side with other foresters that advocate forestry management systems which could use these self-regenerating trees as a resource. Many of these pest trees in our region can be harvested and sold, and the proceeds could be used to prevent outlier spread. The prime invaders in the Wakatipu region are Douglas-fir, Lodgepole pine (Contorta), Corsican Pine (p Nigra), Scots (p Silvestris) and more recently, European Larch. Douglas-fir, known as NZ Oregon when sold as structural timber, currently earns between $130-$150 per tonne (at mill gate). Nearly 300 tonnes were sold this year from work done near the Skyline Gondola, but in the 1970s and early 80s, I milled hundreds of cubic meters on my portable mill across the district. In the past, Corsican Pine have been grown and harvested in Naseby Forest for building timber. Also, the Mackenzie Country has been a source of post timber cut from wilding Contorta. With the current building boom, there is demand for all species and grades of timber. There are many commercial possibilities for by-products, too. Wood chips from these invasive species are a great source for biofuel and can be used as an alternative to fossil fuels. Local entrepreneurs have even processed branchwood from these trees for essential oils. Christchurch-based forestry scientist Owen Springford, revealed that if all wildings were registered in the Canterbury region, it would earn as much as $300,000 for the Department of Conservation to help control outlier spread. Additionally, a 30-year research plan into afforestation of the South Island’s denuded high country in the 1950s showed that the most invasive of these species stemmed erosion and prevented land slips. It also improved soil quality which enabled the re-introduction of native plants in some areas. A 1911 photo of Queenstown shows a planted shelter belt above the township, introduced partly to prevent rock falls. As for the indigenous versus exotic vegetation argument, I still question what constitutes an iconic landscape. For nearly 800 years, since human habitation, landscapes have been modified. Apart from areas in Westland and Fiordland, a few areas in the East and Central Otago, most vegetation is exotic. So are our commercial forests. The Douglas-fir being removed adjacent to the Skyline Gondola are about 80 years old, up to 70 meters in height with diameters of well over a meter – a fantastic resource with commercial viability. Remarkable Theatre Congratulations to local theatre group, Remarkable Theatre for receiving a whopping 8 OSTAs (Otago & Southland Theatre Awards) nominations. OSTA was established to recognise excellence in musical theatre across Otago and Southland. More than 100 nominees have been announced across 21 categories – one of the biggest in OSTA’s history. The nominations have been received for Remarkable Theatre’s 2018 production of Australian classic AWAY by Michael Gow, directed by Kiwi theatre legend Lisa Warrington. The group includes a range of local talent, including Wakatipu High School students. Six nominations are for best supporting female or male actors. Phena Byrne is up for best leading female and Blaise Barham is nominated for best leading male. Results are set to be announced at a black tie event on 16th February 2019.

Auckland-based visual artist Jimmy James Kouratoras is returning to Queenstown for another spectacular exhibition at Artbay Gallery Exclusive Exhibitions (11 Marine Parade).

What’s Happening At Eternity’s Gate A human, tactile and luminous new film about Vincent van Gogh’s final days. 110 minutes, directed by Julian Schnabel.

The exhibition will showcase Jimmy’s latest collection of works under the title Putāhi Wairua: Where Angels and Ancestors Collide, which explores the intersections between the celestial and the earthly. Putāhi Wairua, a shared meeting place of spirits comes into play, and traditional icons meet power figures. Jimmy James Kouratoras’ work is heavily influenced by his Maori and Greek heritage, his paintings and sculptures often tell stories of whakapapa, past, present and future. Rich, bright and colourful, you’ll find Jimmy’s artwork in private and public collections from Wellington to Manhattan. He’s also received critical acclaim internationally; he won the 2016 People’s Choice Award for the Brisbane Contemporary Art Prize and was a finalist for the National Contemporary Art Prize in 2017. Jimmy started his career in the nineties as a film set painter. He began by making interiors, moved to set decorations and then worked with senior artists to paint sets. This taught him to play with texture, colour and composition on a large scale – skills which are evident in his contemporary work, which is big and bold. Balance is another important element in Jimmy’s works and his latest solo exhibition at Artbay will open with a dramatic performance by renowned Lebanese opera singer, Ava-Maria Ghanan. The musical piece has been specially created to match the artworks and has been put together with the help of writer, director and dramaturg Dione Joseph. “It’s about having a sensory experience. Balance is important to me and my artworks, so in collaborating with Ava-Maria Ghanan and Dione Joseph, we balance my energy with their female energies, and uphold universal laws of balance and genuine collaboration,” says Jimmy.

ARTHURS POINT Arthur’s Point enjoys the perfect outdoor environment for mountain bike lovers as well as people who enjoy walking tracks. There is plenty to choose from, from beginners to experienced riders and walkers. Here you will find: Moonlight Track This track is for the mountain bikers and walkers. Walking time one way will take between 4-5 hours. Mountain biking time varies from 3-5hrs. It is a loop track which is 38km. The track starts at Arthur’s Point and follows the route into Moonlight Goldfields and continues down to Moke Lake. The track is for intermediate riders, so you need to be fit. Morning Star Track This is a short trail that leads down to the Shotover River. The track is a gravel trail that leads to the Morningstar Beach, it is approximately 30 minutes’ walk. Once you reach the beach, you can enjoy watching the jet boats that operate in the river, ideal for young families. Oxenbridge Tunnel Track Great track for the family to enjoy. Within a short distance you can reach the tunnel entrance and then the lookout that has the most amazing views of the Shotover River. Easy walk with great views, fun for the whole family.

Drug Testing Technician Queenstown/Central Otago The Drug Detection Agency (TDDA) is the largest provider of workplace drug testing services in New Zealand, performing health and safety focused collection and screening of urine, oral fluid and hair samples from workforce personnel.
